Monsaraz Castle is a fortified medieval village with panoramic views of the surrounding valley. It is considered a open sky museum, with three bastions and surrounded by a stone wall of schist and granite.
We came across this castle by chance. What a fantastic find. Recommend for a walk around the town which won't take long (1 hour). Views are unbelievable in every direction. The whole village is beautiful and picturesque.
Robert Watt — Google review
Perry cool place. The entire village within the walls is quite charming. Small shops and excellent little restaurants. You can spend a few hours walking around the shops, taking in the views, then settle in for some food and libations.
Ryan Easterday — Google review
Very high up on the mountain is this nice castle that we went to. A lot of it is sightseeing, but you really get to see all of the old buildings and etc. It seems like they were fixing things up or remodeling things, which is a good thing. Otherwise, there's not much else to do but as always very cool!
Dylan Teixeira (Blue) — Google review
I loved the view. This castle has 4 towers and each of them has a different view. The town and the sea were my favorite. I was a bit scare of the stairs tho so I hope they change them. We were the only visitors there so we managed to take many photos. Actually the whole town was amazing. There are human sized figures everywhere that symbolize the history of this town. It's 2:30 hours away from Lisbon but it's free to visit. You will find restaurants and cafe there but make sure to check their working hours online first.
nora shoieb — Google review
Monsaraz is a tranquil hill top village with astounding views across the extensive plains and reservoir - visit and you'll want to stay all day and drink in its calm and peaceful culture, in September access was no issue with the village glowing in the afternoon sun and idyllic architecture.
peter menter — Google review
A very pleasant morning visit to this beautiful town housed within the Monsaraz Castle. Picturesque photos all over. Not spectacular but such a comfortable vibe to walk around for a good half an hour
CK Cheong — Google review
You are allowed to walk throughout the castle and walls. Stunning views of the lakes. Lot of parking.
Bruce The Vermonter — Google review
Free entry to the castle grounds and walking about the structure is mostly unrestricted, which lets you get a better feel of the castle building and what it would've been like in the past. The actual inside building in the main tower was blocked off although it didn't take away much from the entire experience. Amazing views from all sides of the castle. Small description board at the entrance is all you get in the way of information, although the view is likely what people are most interested in.
John Varwell — Google review
While we went at a quiet time of year, it was really calming to just wander the streets, alleyways, and shops. There were so many beautiful overlooks and we really enjoyed our time!
Elizabeth Jenkins — Google review
An attractive small whitewashed town with an information centre just inside the gates. Plenty of small carparks up at the town level so you don't have to climb the hill in the heat. A free castle at the end of the village where the centre was converted into a bull ring many years ago. You need to take care on some of the walls but not too bad as there are also metal steps.
Ann Wells — Google review
Simple castle with free access with a stunning view on Monsaraz and the surrounding area, dominant the lake. Be careful because some passages and stairs are not secured and very safe.
Federica C — Google review
After seeing Marvao castle just a few days earlier I was a little disappointed. The views from the castle are fantastic, but the castle itself has been transformed into a bull fighting ring and it is not very big, there is not much to see. I enjoyed walking around the town more than visiting the castle.
Olaf Katrynski — Google review
The Castle and the small village inside the walls is definitely worth the visit. Amazing views!

I have only missed a room dedicated to the photographer, and look that in that town there is a photographic tradition, but surely everything will come.

Just for the interior it would be worth it but it is also located under the keep, which can also be visited. An absolutely recommended visit both for those of us who come from outside and for those of Extremadura.

Un museo donde poder conocer cómo se ha habitado la región hasta nuestros días. Los fondos con los que cuenta el museo son impresionantes y las escenas que los organizan están muy bien ambientadas. (Translated by Google) A museum that must be visited, to learn about the jobs and habitations of yesteryear, how they were related to the articles and to be able to imagine a past life. It is highly recommended to go with enough time to visit the museum, taking into account the details that are suggested as well as the temporary exhibitions that are held in the center. You can visit the tower with the price of admission (€2.5 per person). The average visit time exceeds one hour and there are elements to ensure minimum accessibility. The climb to the tower is done using interior ramps. On Mondays the museum remains closed, as usual. This museum is larger in comparison and in number of pieces than the Don Benito ethnographic museum, but it is recommended to visit the latter as well, since it provides us with an approach to ethnography and anthropology in Extremadura.

The Pub Rincón Nazarí in Badajoz has a great atmosphere and good drinks. It's perfect for a relaxing afternoon with friends. The patio is also quite beautiful.

A very lovely and nicely decorated place in a quiet corner of Badajoz. The service is good and there's a wide selection of spirits and teas. The price is certainly on the higher side, considering that we paid € 6 for a regular glass of Martini Vermouth.

The Alcazaba of Badajoz is a historic citadel that served as a crucial control point between the Castilian plateau, Portugal, and Andalusia. Dating back to the Almohad period, it was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931. The fortress features several towers and gateways surrounding an archaeological museum and gardens.
Really fun to explore. Doesn’t feel touristy at all. I think there were only two people exploring this lovely spot the morning f I was there. All the I information about the history of the Alcazaba is in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.
It was particularly nice in the morning with the sun peaking out from behind the hill on which the Alcazaba sits.

Decently preserved Moorish castle with various display placards describing its history and what looked to be a reconstructed Roman fort at the center repurposed as a library but the description said it was a church or temple.. Takes about 45 min. to visit. It was free to visit.

The Castelo de Elvas is a stunning medieval fortress that offers guided tours, a restaurant on-premises and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. This grand historical landmark is an impressive sight to behold and transports visitors back in time with its imposing architecture and rich history. Its location adds to its charm, situated in the picturesque region of Elvas. Guests can explore the castle's well-preserved ramparts and towers while learning about its important role in Portuguese history.

Compared to the other hilltop villages along the Spain-Portugal border, this one lacks sparkle. The castle itself is small and less interesting than others and the old town section was a little run down and lacked the architectural detail of Évora.
sage sweetwood — Google review
It is a small castle, but also very cheap to enter (2 Euro/adult). There's not much to do beyond walking along the walls and take pictures, the view around really is beautiful but that's about it. Would definitely benefit from some additional historical context/informative plaques.
Felipe Cruvinel — Google review
The view here is quite breathtaking. This castle is one of UNESCO’s world heritage and it is situated in a high place where you can view the whole landscape, walk through the streets back to the square, see the Miradouro, get a glimpse of beautiful plants (I actually loved the way the locals use recycled plastics as flower vases) and I saw the biggest sunflower ever. I visited on a Monday and the castle was closed. Hopefully when you visit (don’t make it a Monday morning) you might be able to go up the castle and catch a glimpse of Spain from the viewpoints.

Elvas Castle features sturdy city walls, a moat and the castle are evidence of how this has always been considered a strategic border town. Elvas, in fact, was of great importance for Portugal’s independence especially in the conflicts against Spain during the 17th century. The city also long served as General Wellington’s base during the Napoleonic Wars.(fr:@timecapitales)
Looming high over the arid countryside, approximately 3km north of town, stands a formidable old military fort with a commanding presence. From the castelo, the fort is visible on a distant hillside. In 2015, the fort underwent partial restoration, allowing visitors to explore its thick-walled corridors and gain insight into the past. Guided tours in English are available, providing an immersive experience of the fort's history (call ahead to arrange a tour).
The fort offers stunning views of Elvas and the surrounding countryside. The strategic location of the fort played a crucial role in the wars with Spain, as it was used as an artillery point to attack the besieged city of Elvas in the 1650s and again in the 1760s.
Following the latter conflict, Dom José I ordered the construction of this powerful fortified bastion, which proved to be a masterpiece of military architecture. It successfully withstood subsequent attacks in the early 1800s, thanks in part to its 144 cannons. The fort later served as a political prison until 1974. One of the fort's most striking features is the main entrance, the Porta do Dragão (Dragon Gate), which features a carved stone dragon over the passageway.(fr:@history inmemes)

R. da Parada do Castelo 4, 7350-082 Elvas, Portugal
The Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça is an 18th-century pentagonal fortress situated on a hill, which offers panoramic views of Elvas and even Badajoz in Spain. The fort has been restored, and many parts have been refurbished to welcome visitors into most areas. It contains historical exhibits such as wall paintings and furniture that transport visitors back to the early/mid-20th century and before. Entry is free, making it a worthwhile destination for tourists visiting Elvas.
Beautiful fort, only about a 4-5 minute drive from the aqueduct parking. We arrived early in the afternoon on a Saturday and there was only a few other people there. Interesting history and well worth the time it takes to visit.

We walked up the hill from old Elvas, a 45 minutes scenic walk. It started to rain and became vey cloudy, which ruined the sight on Elvas. So we drove back next morning for the pictures. The fort is impressive, difficult to find the route for visiting.

A huge, well preserved, fortress that will surely entertain you most if you're curious about walking down the whole wall and exploring every bit. The view is nothing but gorgeous specially up at the governor's house.
I didn't see it with a guide, but if they were available I'd choose that since the fortress is just too huge and surely filled with history that you can't grasp by just reading the signs which in my opinion were lacking some information.
The Castle of Vila Viçosa has a rich history that dates back many centuries, with influences from both Roman and Muslim occupation. P. van Ommeren — Google review
Interesting museum with friendly helpful staff. Ancient roman artifacts are very good but sometimes displayed rather dimly. The hunting weapons collection is superb but not to everyone's taste. The trophy displays not only include some mind-numbling examples of the worst form of the art; but also prove the damage that can be caused by over privileged royal families can do when let loose on African wildlife. If you're in the area well worth the entry fee not just for the collections on display, the excellent view from the ramparts but the fact that in 35 degrees it's deliciously cool within its heavy stone walls ;)
The Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa, located in the town of Terreiro do Paco de Vila Vicosa, is a 16th century palace and museum with richly decorated rooms that showcase collections from different eras. The building has an interesting facade covered in marble from the region and contains features typical of civil and residential architecture as well as Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical and Qing Chinese porcelain.
The Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa was for many centuries the seat of the house of Braganza. The construction of the current palace began in 1501 and was expanded together with the rising importance of the family, as they grew closer connected to the Royal family of Portugal. During the invasion by Napoleon, the Royal family fled to Brazil and the palace was closed. The last extentions of the palace were done by the last King of Portugal, Don Carlos I. After the revolution of 1910 the palace was again abandoned, only to be opened to the public again in 1984 after restoration works. The interior of the palace is still with the original decorations and is lavishly decorated with Azulejos, frescos, tapesteries, furniture, paintings and porcelain. Although the guided visit is only possible in Portuguese, it do is a must if you visit the region. No photo of the interior are allowed.

It is also notable the furniture and tapestries, as well as silk covered walls of the certain rooms, where the wealth of the Portug8ese Empire is reflected.
The tour guides in the Palace privide an excellent description of each room, its use, and some stories of its occupats, which were connected to said rooms, or certain furniture pieces!
It is a window into a world of Privilege, but certainly also helps us undrrstand the Portuguese Culture and Traditions of today, and the Spirit of this great People...
(May I add a political comment: unfortunately, the great Portuguese people have been VERY POORLY represented by its greedy politicians...! In those days, our Leaders kept our people and the interests of the country first!).

You can’t tour alone. We arrived at 12:20 am - hours it is open, but couldn’t go in because it is tour only. Next tour in 2 hours. When we asked where we could have lunch and wait, we got a shrug of the shoulders and a”find something yourself “ response.

It was a grate Palace to be seen. Now they close most of the areas. The entrance is 7 euros but if you want to see the carriage extra 3 euros. I think is not good we go to a place is to see all. Before we pay one only ticket. From the 1st visit pass some years but these experience was bad. We cannot take any photos inside the Palace. Is time the foundation take care of the Palace should improve the experience of the visitors.

What a wonderful moment I had to visit Adega Mayor! One of the most appreciated winery in Portugal, known for producing high-quality wines that showcase the region's rich terroir. Their wines produced with love and care reflects a perfect balance of traditional winemaking and modern techniques, creating a unique and memorable experience for wine enthusiasts. I really suggest a visit to taste and feel the wonderful moments that this region and specially Adega Mayor can offer to those who enjoy good moments in their lives!

Interesting building, and had a show about species of the area when we visited. The rooftop has a great view of the surroundings.
The tour itself is rather quick and simple, of a company that still relies heavily on manual labour. The wines are definitely not worth the price.

Stately stone castle constructed in the 8th-century on a rocky hill, offering picturesque views.
Fantastic beautifully preserved castle and "lived in" town all within the castle walls. One of the best preserved I've visited, awesome views as it sits right atop the rocky hilltop. Great cafes, restaurants, a few shops and museum. Well worth a visit.

Sporting a very cheap entrance fee (€1.5) and providing great vantage points to the surrounding sights, it is worth a visit. Do be careful with your footing and head while walking about and be mentally prepared for heights and uphill paths.

Very well conserved castle and the tickets are really cheap (1.5€), so it makes an even more satisfactory visit.
Inside the castle walls you can find free toilets and small souvenir stores and local crafts stores.
From the towers of the castle it is possible to observe a very large portion of the surrounding territory. Beautiful views. Worth a visit.

Well restored Castle with great views and fun to explore. You can walk along top of the entire Castle perimeter walls although it's quite scary as there are no railings on the inner side. Best of all it's so peaceful.
It's the highlight of my Portugal trip.

What a stunning castle to visit!! I was blown away by how intact it still is and the sheer brilliance of the construction. It also has the biggest cistern in any of Portugal's castles. How on earth they built it on top of a mountain is beyond me. A must see if you are in the region.

Amazing, amazing town and castle. Take the trouble to detour there. Park outside the wall or take the drive inside. Be warned, roads are narrow and corners are tight. Not for the feint hearted.
Cheryl Theunissen — Google review
Of all the castles in Portugal, this one has to be one of the highlights for me. The views from walking the castle walls are spectacular, given the height of the castle over the surrounding area. Just imagining what it must have been like to build this castle on such a mountainous height hundreds of years ago really makes you appreciate human ingenuity and engineering.
It was also nice to see the cistern still collects some water today and hasn't been converted into some other use as is common with other castles in the country -- if it weren't for some terrible visitors throwing their junk into the water, you can actually see how clear the water remains. The small garden outside of the entrance to the castle is also quite picturesque and reminded me of the fancy gardens you see in TV shows set in medieval times.

Great castle with fantastic views of the area. Unlike most other castles you can basically access every part of castle, so you can walk along the walls, walk up the towers etc. and the tickets are cheap.

Very well restored castle. The view from here of the village as well as the surrounding area is what to die for. The ticket costs 1.5€ and we could also take our dog with us. Marvao is arguably the most beautiful village I’ve been in Portugal. It’s absolutely picturesque and peaceful.
Roman Roaming Around — Google review
This really is a place worth a visit and explore. Some 260m of elevation afford the most stunning views of the surrounding countryside. A visit to the town cistern, still with water, is fascinating. The village was quiet when we visited mid week so no hustle and bustle. Strongly recommend.

Five stars are not enough! Only just home and already planning the next visit! We had booked one ride, but it was that good that despite only having a four night visit we went twice! Joaquim was lovely, completely puts you at ease, nothing is too much trouble. It's obvious that he adores both his horses and dogs alike. Antonio (our guide) could not have been more attentive and the two different rides were perfectly pitched. The horses are amazing - the one I rode has stolen my heart. Thank you so much guys!

Joaquim and his son Antonio run a very professional and top quality riding centre. The atmosphere is friendly and supportive and the horses are an absolute joy to ride, very well trained and much loved and cared for by all the team. I have just spent 5 day at this centre riding 4 different horses, taking lessons with Joaquim and riding on scenic tracks by the banks of the river with the amazing scent of eucalyptus. Joaquim is an amazing instructor and is totally committed to ensuring his clients receive a top quality service. I highly recommend this centre, you will not regret it . I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you to Joaquim, Antonio and all the team.

Swimming area with a picnic tables & BBQ areas, plus a nearby waterfall & a part-time lifeguard.
A small forest river beach
Dogs are banned from the beach area but ok on the boardwalk. Nice boardwalk though stunning scenery. Plenty of seating en-route. The first waterfall is an easy walk, beyond that requires some easy climbing but not suitable for less mobile walkers. Worth the effort if you can. Also worth arriving early; parking is limited. Cafe is a little loud, nice for a coffee but not worth eating. Unisex toilets by the consession. Road en-route is good but a little mountainous and plenty of evidence of accidents with the numerous crash barrier dents, so drive carefully.

Palace Hotel Bussaco is a lavish former palace with stately rooms and suites, featuring a banquet hall and a bar with a fireplace. It offers an exceptional staff and service, along with thematic decor that reflects its rich history. The hotel's location in the Bussaco National Forest provides guests with the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature, offering stunning views and peaceful hiking trails. While some guests found the food slightly expensive, they praised the attentive staff and romantic atmosphere.
Really nice hotel with beautiful history behind it. The staff were all very nice and helpful. The garden and fountain are fantastic and definitely Instagram worthy. The breakfast was on the basic side and didn’t have much to choose from but if you’re only looking for eggs/ham/granola/fruits/coffee then this is a good place to enjoy your morning.

I always try and give a fair assessment so I will start by saying the beauty of this place is it's history, stunning architecture and amazing natural surroundings.
It was a joy to walk the grounds and spend time in the stunning communal areas but things went downhill the minute we turned the key in the door of our £200 a night suite.
Outdated fixtures and fittings, peeling paintwork, signs of water infiltration and stains on both the carpets and the furniture.
In addition neither the fridge or the air conditioning worked.
The service in the bar and quality of the food from the restaurant were equally disappointing with at least two of the meals being returned and, when we raised our concerns to the front desk staff, one of the bar staff came to remonstrate with us.
I don't understand how this hotel warrants a five star rating.
Tim Hack — Google review
Awesome palace, beautiful architecture and surrounded by lush nature. The interior is equally amazing. Common areas and room are nice and comfortable and retain the original touches of when this was actual home to Kings. The breakfast buffet is something from another world.
Unfortunately the quality and attention to detail of the service and staff is not even close to what is expected for a place at this level. Staff is not attentive and slow: took 30min to get our order during dinner (looked like they forgot about us). For 35 euros per dish, I’d a way better service. Food was also not EOW.
And during breakfast the gardening crew simply turned on an incredibly noisy gas powered lawn mower right next to the breakfast tables on the terrace. Staff only reacted once we and other customers started complaining (and surprisingly, they said this always happens, but still apologized) - was kind of a buzzkill to the whole experience.
Thomas Strakos — Google review
Fabulous historic building, very charming. Suite was large and high-ceilinged. But very old furnishings, worn mattress and pillows. In our suite, the bathroom was like a cellar, with one stainless steel support pillar, oddly tiled with deep green marble tiles. Not very clean
Jac J — Google review
We recommend a 1 night stay. We had a great experience. The lunch was really good and while we wouldn’t rate the breakfast the highest, it was still good. I wasn’t feeling well so we couldn’t hold our dinner reservation. The staff helped us with room service. The grilled ham and cheese and tea was good. My husband had the steak sandwich and he loved it and said while simple it was delicious.
The beds and furniture are all antiques so you have to go in appreciating the castle experience and look past other common luxuries from other hotels. We loved it and thought it was an amazingly cool stay. We did the hike up to the top of the mountain. It’s about 1.5 miles uphill - take some water.
It’s a winding mountain drive to get there and to your next location so keep that in mind.

Exuberant nature. The palace is beautiful and historic, but it is neglected. Artworks and sculptures are dirty! Bathrooms are in need of refurbishment. The breakfast could be better - coffee was cold.

Great place to hike and discover each point of the garden.
You can join the premises with your own car paying 6 euros (fair price), or you can join free by bike or walking.
I didn't stay in the hotel, that's the reason that I didn't rate it.
Bruno Rico — Google review
I have waited to write this review as I wasn't sure how to word our experience. If you want to say you stayed in a beautiful palace in Portugal then I would recommend this unique opportunity. However, if you don't wish to feel shamed or made to feel oppressed and bad about yourself then I don't recommend it. We visited from Canada and had an issue with booking our toddler son. The check-in person was rude, impatient and accusatory for our mistake. He refused to listen to anything we had to say and made us feel like common thieves trying to smuggle a child in who we were holding at check-in. He overcharged us for the child and then proceeded to reprimand us and make me feel demeaned as a mother. We understand occupancy and occupancy charges, and for a "five star" I would expect more tact and customer service vs personal attacks. The rooms are ok. It is outdated but you are paying for authenticity and the experience. At breakfast the one staff person was incredibly hostile and rude. They ran out of all kinds of food and noone dared to mention it or else she would snap at you and ask if you "did not like the food that was there." Overall we did not have a relaxing time as the ambiance and feel of the place is not filled with positive vibes and joy. Perhaps this is ok for a certain generation and style of traveler but to keep this place alive I think some of the backdoor thinking may need to be refurbished instead of the rooms. I took a star off for breakfast and one for service. Everything else is truly beautiful.
Katy Carley — Google review
Very beautiful Palace, also the area surrounding. Classic and antique decoration. I didn’t stay overnight but I went to the bar. They have a strange policy that they tell guests that they are full and sometimes they are not even at 20% of their capacity.

Rooms are simple, old style, but clean. The palace is amazing, really well maintained. It brings you to the 18th century. All details of the architecture amazes you and deco inside is a luxury. All around is pure nature.

Best staff and service I ever had. Amazing people, very kind and thoughtful.
The hotel is very thematic and history is everywhere; beds and bathrooms are very good, some in a Art Deco style, and other more renovated with marble.
If i was to say something not as good, would be only regarding the food itself, probably a bit expensive for what it is. But again, staff was flawless and absolutely amazing at all time.
Garden felt a little dry for spring, but woods around are gorgeous.
This place is amazing!

Our classic double was a bit shabby in parts. Lots of coaches seem to visit, so the hotel can get very busy and the staff then get stretched. That said, we had a very good, refined evening meal there on our 2nd evening. Not the cheapest, but a good standard of cooking, with good service. Sofas in the lounge area look a bit grubby, too.
Sandra Hulme — Google review
Beautiful hotel. The grounds were amazing, the history was really cool and the common spaces were gorgeous. It was a ton of fun exploring the space. However, the rooms themselves were not very comfortable. It was quite out of the way and I’m not sure it was the best use of time to dedicate an entire night to this visit - but it was very cool! Breakfast was also amazing and the staff and service were great.
Megan O'Malley — Google review
First, when we asked about air conditioning in the room when the employee showed us the room we were going to sleep in, she told us that there was no air conditioning, and suggested bringing a fan, and they only brought us one fan for three people in the room.
Second, they suggested that we have dinner at the hotel, or if we wanted to bring suggestions for restaurants in the area. Don't make our mistake and have dinner there!!! The food there is absurdly expensive and is far from worth the price!! We asked for one vegetarian dish, and what they served us, I wouldn't bring my dogs to eat.... We saw another guest who asked for this dish that evening and she didn't eat a bite of it except to taste it. The waiter who saw that the gift had not been touched did not even bother to ask if something was wrong.
The only advantage of the hotel is its location, near the hotel there is beautiful nature where you can walk.
In conclusion, if you choose to sleep there because the location suits you, for us it was a good stopping point on our trip between two places on the trip we did, do not eat there in the evening... the breakfast was fine..

A beautiful place for an interesting visit. Up close and personal with the art works in the museum. A lot of history in the car museum and they also have a collection of motorcycles from the first types to modern times. A good place for a visit on a rainy day

Stunning car collection, although it's not the largest one I've seen and I wouldn't drive 5 hours just to see it.
The cars on display are worth seeing, and there's something for everyone. There is also a small art section with paintings... it's worth taking a look. And there's a room dedicated solely to toy cars and collectibles. Everything is well-maintained and spotless. The short drive (10 minutes) to the second part of the museum is worth it. It's not a massive complex, but it was still very interesting to see how the vintage cars are restored.

A wonderful museum! Spent 2 hours there before going on to the Motor Experience. Suitable for all ages. A large exhibit of Dinky toys and similar, lead soldiers and similar. Rooms of interesting articles, porcelain, tapestries, furniture, some religious artifacts. Several rooms of superb art works. The ethos is quality not quantity and it really shows. Then a second building of vintage cars and bikes. Staff were very friendly, helpful and had some English. Most of the labeling was in both Portuguese and English.

This is a gem of a museum hidden in the heavily forested central region of Portugal. Surrounded by roads from all directions of the country that are a car or bike lovers' dream.
If you are coming from Agueda, the old road is littered with hundreds of corners. Road condition a little degraded in parts but nothing my 35 profile 19inch wheels had any trouble with.
Do the full museum experience that will take you 2-3 hours and then explore the area around Tondela and head to Quinta do Cabriz restaurant for more stunning roads and a great lunch at the restaurant on the Cabriz winefarm.

An unusual museum, combining an excellent art collection (with works from different epochs, including paintings by Vieira da Silva, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali) with the most important collection of cars and motorbikes in Portugal, from different eras and makes. Its current temporary exhibition is dedicated to the Lamborghini sports cars. In the photo, the Ford Model T, the car that marked the invention of assembly lines for car production.

We didn't know that they only do guided tours at certain times.. But luckily we managed to get really nice guided tour just for the two of us with really nice and friendly guide... That was worth of 1.5 h of waiting.. Especially that we got nice lunch recommendations to spend the time.

Why not get the visibly bored girls in your wine shop to do some degustations? Can’t be that difficult to sort out a corkscrew and learn a few lines about each bottle, is it? Win win for everyone - clients happy, wine sold and the name of the region is becoming known to ever more people.
Instead the reception is lukewarm, the girls seem to be the first day in their job and the prevailing sense that Bacalhoa still hasn’t decided what business they are in, can’t escape me. I would like to come back to see the art but somehow I lost interest. Seems also a duplication of what’s I. Buddha Eden.

We had such a lovely tour here, we had a fantastic young guide, who spoke very good English and knew her history. Also about the collection of artifacts that they have there. Its not just a wine Tour. Well worth a visit if you like history. €8 was for a guided tour, taste the sparkling wine and some lovely little bread rolls with the famous pork.

It’s not a museum where you learn and wander to discover: it’s an extravagant accumulation of artifacts, from minerals to fossils to traditional African arts to an edifying exhibit about Gandhi. You are rushed through tunnels and rooms stuffed with all these things with little context and no time to absorb and appreciate, despite the capable tour guide’s best efforts. It’s not a testimony of our planet’s and its peoples’ heritage; it’s rather more evidence of greed and possession, under the disguise and excuse of sharing by showing off. Worth a visit just to understand the scope of the problem.

A great spot to see some cool artifacts from around the world, and taste some great snacks and sparkling wines after the tour finishes. Goncalo Costa was an excellent tour guide, he spoke fluent English and cares about history and sharing it with others. If life allows the opportunity, would love to visit again!

Termas de São Pedro do Sul is the largest spa in the Iberian Peninsula and a popular destination for thermal treatment, physiotherapy, and wellness. Reputable doctors increasingly recommend thermal treatment over medication. The spa offers various treatments including the Aqva Circuito Termal with a relaxing massage, thermal pools with jets, sauna, and steam rooms. The historical baths date back to Roman times and have been frequented by emperors seeking treatment.
Steamy fun in beautiful surroundings
The age old thermal baths in Sâo Pedro dates back to Roman times. Here emperors and those wishing to be treated as emperors have come for centuries without being disappointed. All though of a more recent date than the original baths, the flying faucet adds a humorist twist to the experience

VERY DISAPPOINTING. I called before arriving to get all the information but the receptionist couldn’t speak English. My daughter was really excited about going there so we decided that the 2 hour drive would be worth it. Getting there - again not possible to get information in English. We were asked to get back 2 hours later so we did. (Still hoping it would be worth it) Entrance for 2 is €85 including massage +€10 for swim caps. They refused giving my 12 year old daughter massage (even though it would be together with me and the therapist was female) They also refused lowering the price for her even though she wouldn’t enjoy the whole package.. But at this point after driving for 2 hours and waiting for 2 hours to get assistance in English we couldn’t not go…
I thought it would hopefully be high quality facilities.
The massage treatment was good, but:
- The bathrobes didn’t have belts
- The towels were stained
- The lockers were impossible to open and close
- The water in the (one) pool was luke warm
- There are only 2 showers in the dressing room so you’ll have to wait.
Basically my daughter paid €42 to swim in a luke warm pool for 20 minutes (with 3 points of jet massage)
Facilities not very attractive - absolutely no pampering feeling justifying the price.

Lovely visit to the Thermal Spa. Make sure you book in advance by calling or popping in as they get busy especially on a weekend. We opted for the Aqva Circuito Termal with a deep and relaxing massage. In total it cost €75 per person. We got an hour in the thermal pool with jets, sauna and steam room. The massage was relaxing and the staff were lovely and spoke good English. The place wasn’t crowded we went on a Friday Afternoon there was one other couple in there. Skin felt really soft after. The town was nice to walk around and the walk along the river is lovely. Recommend a visit.

The place is fine but a little bit limited. We expected more sulfuric water given it's everywhere outside in fountains but didn't really see it inside. There are no cold baths either which would be nice after the sauna and all the heat in the pool.

Aveiro Station, also known as Estacao Ferroviaria de Aveiro, is a modern central train station located near the city center. It operates daily with various timetables for Alfa Pendular, Intercity, Regional, Suburban, and Vouga Regional trains. The new design of the station stands in contrast to the old azulejo-decorated building nearby. There are plans to convert the classic structure into a museum or regional information office.
This station is a gem and beautifully preserved. The classic tiles and very clean, fresh paint make this a very attractive sight. The train operations were very good, the directions to the trains easy to follow even if you do not speak Portuguese. It made my visit from Porto easy and pleasant.
Gary Rogers — Google review
The ancient train station is very beautiful, the wall fresco's tells a lot about the town and its history. The small shop that's inside the station got all sorts of souvenirs. From local wines to specialty snakes.
Liban DUALE — Google review
The stations toilets are Pay to Pee. I am not paying 3 euros in Atm fees just to get 50 cents so I can pee. Add the fact that the train is 40 minutes late.
Amazing how Salazar still influences Portugal after so many years

Aveiro railway station is very small. However, while driving around the town we stopped by it, as the beautiful facade caught our eye.
Very nice composition of Portugal's blue-white Azulejos tiles adorn the main building.

Although, there is a modern train station at Aveiro in use, the old more than 100 year old station building still stands and duly preserved. The old station is having beautiful tile paintings on its wall. It is no less than any other historical building. It is worth watching its tile work. Lovely station.

Clean and modern station, there is a cafe and toilets for which you pay, am not sure how much but make sure you have change.Information boards are plentiful plus announcements in Portuguese and English. I hope this helps.
Chester Draws — Google review
I'm not a big fan of this train station at all to be honest. The space is open, so it's always cold, but it still smells very bad there. Hygiene is clearly not a priority at this establishment. The trains are generally on time. Also there is free parking in the back and a bus station.
Alexandre Gala — Google review
The station is quite far from the city center. I walked from University of Aveiro to the station around 45 minutes.
I did not see much sign to go to the station. I opened google maps to make sure that I am in a correct direction.
The station is quite big and clean. You can find information from the worker. The schedule is easy to find for your trip.
They provide hand sanitizer for the customers. Do not for get to wear your mask before entering the station.
Rita — Google review
The station itself was nice especially the original parts. The only problem was the train operation went on strike at noon, stranding people who were heading elsewhere.
Newt Mignott — Google review
If you need to take the train show up at least an hour to find parking after 9am. Completely ridiculous that the city values caravan parking over commuters. It is not fair that students and workers need to waste an excessive amount of time to find parking because the city rather have caravan parking spaces, and even then they still abuse these privileges by taking up two regular spaces. Its basically a shanty town at this point in the parking lot.
Forum Aveiro is a charming retail complex that boasts classic stone architecture and over 70 stores, as well as a food court. What sets it apart is its open shop concept, making it easy to find big brands within the mall. The location is easily accessible via Google Maps, with nearby bars along the river providing a perfect spot for coffee or drinks while enjoying the view.
Very nice airy shopping center. It is good to walk there so much you think you are in the city. Excellent choice of materials to blend in with the decor. The space is very well maintained and it is super clean. On the ground floor you have the shops and upstairs you have the catering. To do without hesitation if you are in town 👍🏼
The ribbons on the roof make it very cozy
Jonathan Cruz Sequeira (Cruzibabe) — Google review
Centrally located shopping mall with a good selection of stores and places to eat. The architecture is carefully thought through so that the place fits in well in the surroundings. You can admire the cityscape from the outside of the top floor, there are trees planted all over and the shopping alleys are partially outside. The mall is nicely decorated during Xmas time.
Kama Winnik — Google review
It's a beautiful and quite big mall in the middle of Aveiro. You find the regular stores here but for me the catch is the buildings, the decoration and the fact that it is an outdoor Mall which you do not find that often.
Being an outdoor Mall there are of course also problems coming along. Since it is quite hot in the summer the stores without air condition, which were the majority, are quite hot inside which makes looking for clothes and trying them on relatives uncomfortable rarely quick.
If you are around, it is definitely worth the stroll!
You can park directly underneath the mall. It took about 15 minutes to get into the parking garage though because of traffic jams inside the garage.
Fabian V — Google review
Average, it looked way bigger on the outside than the actual offering of the stores once we took a walk inside..

Cool place to rest in Aveiro. Quite varied restaurants and good cafes. However, few improvements are required in the babies room, e.g. easier door to open (if you have a stroller)
Motaz Ayiad — Google review
The Forum is a modern mall in an old building. Just by side of the canal, there could not have been a better place for it. Many upscale brands exist on ground floor and a good food court with multi cuisine restaurants exists on the first floor. There is enough activity to pass time and enjoy a walk by the side of canal
Praveen Mehrotra — Google review
The shopping mall is quite unique for their concept to be open shop. You can easily find big brands here in the shopping mall. The location is very easy to find by google maps. There are some bars nearby if you want to have a coffee or drinks. They are located near the river. You can sit around and enjoy the view after doing your things.

5.5 miles of steep wooden walkways along the bank of the Paiva River with scenic views.
A great 8km (5mile) walk that is well maintained and allows you to walk two abreast on a very clear path. There is the option of taking in the Arouca 516m suspension bridge but you will need to book ahead as places are very limited. The walk itself is a great way to see the Paiva valley and gets you close to nstire.
If you are walking in one direction then the majority of people walk downstream. This involves a 1.5 km walk up to the highest point of the trail followed by 0.5km of descent via 600+steps and the remainder of the trail is a meander to the end. Jeeps and taxis are available at both ends and it is a 12km trip back to the start via the road.
If you are doing a return trip then start wherever suits you best just be prepared to go up relentlessly for 0.5km at some stage. There are restaurants at both ends and plenty of river beaches and alike to stop at for a picnic /rest /swim!
We went in late March on a Monday and parking was easy and the route was not busy but in the height of the summer they can get 3,000 people a day which may take some of the enjoyment out of the day. Parking is limited and there are very limited alternative parking locations within 1km. If you are thinking of going in the summer I can imagine a very early start would not only avoid the congestion (road and trails) but also be cooler and more interesting light.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did

5.5 mile hike along the Paiva River. The sheer length of the decking walkway is unbelievable, allowing safe access along the banks. There are stops along the trail for swimming, etc as well. A few snack bars were also located at the trail main points to allow refueling, water, a snack, etc. If you here bells, it's not dehydration, look around and you'll see free range cows and goats. 😉

This is a walkway along the Paiva River with beautiful scenery. My family and I enjoyed walking it together. We have teens and still had to bring lots of snacks and water so be prepared. There is a nice place to stop about midway through with restrooms. These walkways are not stroller friendly.

We only hiked the vertical section from the main road up to the base of the suspension bridge. Be prepared for about 300 metres of vertical gain, all in nice wooden stairs - definitely a knee workout. Beautiful views from the top. The suspension bridge now costs €12 (not €2 as it says on the poster), and you have to wait for an official tour time slot, which would have been an hours wait for us.
Tristam MacDonald — Google review
Beautiful hike with amazing views. The prices are pretty gougy and don't seem to be posted anywhere. Its 12€ to cross the suspension bridge or 2€ to just the paths 1 if you pay online.

Loved this walk. Plenty of steps, but OK if you have a moderate level of fitness. Swimming hole about half way along so bring your swimmers if it's hot. Taxi or Jeep return

The Paiva Walkways are located on the left bank of the Paiva River, in the municipality of Arouca, district of Aveiro. There are 8 km that provide an "untouched" tour, surrounded by landscapes of unparalleled beauty, in an authentic natural sanctuary, next to whitewater descents, quartz crystals and endangered species in Europe. The route extends between the river beaches of Areinho and Espiunca, with Vau beach between the two. The Paiva Walkways are an 8.7 km wooden walkway, built along the cliffs of from Paiva. They are located about 75 km southeast of Porto, within the Arouca Unesco Global Geopark. This incredible attraction, due to its unique beauty, has already been awarded 10 times in the World Travel Awards. The 516 Arouca Bridge is the longest suspended pedestrian bridge in the world, measuring 516 meters in length and 175 meters in height. Suspended on Tibetan-style steel cables, the 516 Arouca Bridge was a great challenge for Engineering. This impressive structure joins the banks of the Paiva River Gorge, over the beautiful Cascata das Aguieiras. Next to us, the Paiva River flows in an almost musical way, rising its flow in the winter period, extending the adrenaline of its wild waters to the adventurers of rafting and kayaking. Along the shore, the journey begins in the bathing areas of Areinho and/or Espiunca, and halfway along the route, the small paradise of the leisure and leisure area of Vau opens up in front of us. It's the eight kilometers of a lifetime. Project co-financed by «ON2 – O Novo Norte», through QREN and the European Regional Development Fund.

That's a wonderful hike along a wooden pathway that runs along the river. Unfortunately we arrived a bit late around 17:20 and we initially wanted to walk back and forth the 8kms.
It would take approximately 2h for us one way but we did not have enough time so we walked back from 3/4 of the route.
The walk is easy on the path but there are quite a lot of stairs and during a warm day it can become moderate difficulty.
There are beautiful sports along the way and if you have enough time it definitely is a relaxing hike! I highly recommend planning your visit here.

Absolutely gorgeous trail to cover. This trail consists of 2 times 9kms making it an 18km trail in total. It features some amazing sights such as the wooden stairs, the natural river flowing through the trail and the 516 meter long hanging bridge. The trail is pretty easy since the path is made of wood. We spend 2 hours hiking. There are taxi’s at each point which take you to your parking spot for around €15-€20

Stone hilltop fort from the 9th century, with a chapel & sweeping views from walls & battlements.
A wonderfully preserved Castle whose foundations go to the 10th century and saw layers upon layers or renovations and new tiers. I recommend visiting museum close to the church on entrance to park surrounding castle, before going to the castle itself!
Students ticket was for 1,50 €
Castle itself lies on top of a hill, solurrounded by big park which makes it naturally hidden and difficult to conquer, it have impressive architecture and well preserved walls as well as towers due to many renovations made in time, biggest restorations and changes made by king Manuel II in years 1907-1909. From which you can see impressive water tank and water collective infrastrucutre, multiple fireplaces inside of the castle.
First military constructions on that part was built by Roman Empire. Castle we see now is mostly from 11th century and was attacked by maurs multiple times and took important part in protecting lands from Libon to Porto, before for Roman Empire as well as later for Portugal.

Easy access with parking immediately outside the entrance. Tickets sold in the souvenir shop, although nobody checking tickets before entering the castle, adult entry is only €3 which goes toward funding renovation, so would recommend doing the right thing and paying. The castle is in good condition, lots of access and little stairwells to climb for tower access etc. Views from the castle offer typically excellent panoramic views. Souvenir shop prices were very reasonable. In the main hall there is an information video showing intermittently in Portuguese language. A worthwhile trip out from Porto.

Visiting the castle was full of rich history. They are doing renovations so it will probably be even better when they are done. I love seeing history taken care of. Alameda Roberto Vaz de Oliveira 4520, 4520-141 Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal
The best medieval fair in Portugal 🇵🇹, if you have the time to go, you will enjoy it
Jose Manuel — Google review
Santa Maria da Feira is a historic city in Portugal known for its rich cultural heritage and festivals. One of the lesser-known but fascinating festivals in Santa Maria da Feira is the "Viagem Medieval em Terra de Santa Maria" or the "Medieval Journey in the Land of Santa Maria de Feira .
The Viagem Medieval is a medieval-themed event that takes place annually in Santa Maria da Feira during the summer. It's one of the largest historical reenactment festivals in Europe. The city transforms into a medieval town, recreating the atmosphere, costumes, and lifestyle of the Middle Ages.
Visitors to the festival are transported back in time to the medieval period, with streets and squares filled with knights, troubadours, artisans, and performers, all dressed in authentic medieval clothing. The festival aims to provide an immersive experience that gives participants a glimpse into the past.
Throughout the city, elaborate scenarios are set up to recreate different aspects of medieval life, including markets, workshops, battles, and court scenes. Visitors can explore these scenarios, interact with characters, and witness various reenactments.
The festival offers a wide range of entertainment and activities for visitors of all ages. There are jousting tournaments, medieval music and dance performances, storytelling sessions, theater plays, and more. Traditional crafts and skills are also showcased, allowing attendees to learn about medieval craftsmanship.
Food is an essential part of the Viagem Medieval experience. Traditional medieval dishes and beverages are served at various stalls and eateries. It's a chance for visitors to indulge in authentic flavors from the past.
The festival is not just about entertainment; it also has educational value. Schools often organize trips to the festival, giving students the opportunity to learn about history in an engaging and interactive way.
The Viagem Medieval em Terra de Santa Maria is an enchanting and lesser-known festival that offers a unique blend of history, entertainment, and cultural immersion. It allows attendees to step into the shoes of medieval inhabitants and experience life as it was centuries ago
