The Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, which dates back to 1526, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its minimal environmental impact. Visitors can explore the remnants of this historic mine and see first-hand how it impacted Japan's economy through trade with Europe. The well-preserved roads, tunnels, samurai houses, and artifacts offer a glimpse into the past and allow visitors to appreciate the hard work undertaken by laborers to extract silver in challenging conditions.
We visited this place on 8 october 2023. The day was little bit rainy but didn't interrupt our visit to this UNESCO World heritage site.
We started our journey from Yamaguchi city. The way to Shimane was also nice and enjoyable.
It was a guided tour. First, we visited the art museum. It is recommended to visit before you go to the site. You can know the history thoroughly. Then it will be easy to you to visualize the 500 years old silver mine civilization.
The place is quite thrilling full with history. You can see 500 years ago Barbara shop, the house of Samurai, old house and court building. Here, everything was kept as you can imagine yourself and go back 500 years ago.
Although we can not visit the actual mine area the trip was worthy as well. Strongly recommended.

This was a fun experience. If you come here expecting to go deep under ground in a deep, vast tunnel you will be let down. The tunnel is nice to walk through but it's not the most thrilling thing in the world so its best to keep your expectations low. What really made this experience special was hiring a bicycle and riding through the beautiful traditional buildings in the town which leads up to the mine.
martyn Q — Google review
Iwami Ginza Mines is a great experience. Very peaceful and relaxing. There is only two ways to reach the mine walk or hire a bicycle some of which are electric. Its a 2.5 km easy walk with things to see along the way (temples, shrines and beautiful scenery and toilets). The mine cost is 500 yen and foreigners get a discount. A must see.
Nathan Crookes — Google review
I really enjoy when visiting Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine. This place, become UNESCO heritage site because here you will find the trace of the glory silver mine 400 years ago. Roads, tunnels, Samurai's house, and artifacts as remnants of silver mine still exists until now. This place is conserved well until now. Had trade with Europe, prove this silver mine activity affected Japan's economy at that time. Tour into the tunnel will give you the idea how the labors work to get the silver. It really hard to work under having water problems, and the shortage of light and fresh air in the past. Please visit Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, you will not regret!!

This is a great place to take a walk and it is a important place during Japanese history. It provide funds during 15~16 century.
The Major issue is lack of English resource. It is hard for Foreign visitors to understand the picture by using audio guide. As a UNESCO site, I think it is reasonable to training small number of English guide.
Shih-Hung Hsu — Google review
This isn’t the correct place—go to Ryugenji Mabu Mine Shaft instead—that is the center of Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine.
Ohayō Phil — Google review
Guess I’ll be the lone foreigner voice of dissent. The ONLY mine shaft you can enter without a guide is about 500 meters long, has very few informative signs (Japanese or English), and can be finished in 15 minutes. There are many more on the town map, but those are simply inaccessible former mine shafts.
There is one more you can enter only with a tour; we reserved the tour but it was cancelled because a single tree had fallen on the path between the mine center and the mine. I guess no one in the park had a chainsaw, nor could we have just walked around or over it.
The town IS pretty. Then again, I live in central Japan and have seen just as nice in Takayama, Gujo-Hachiman, and many “Juku” towns. It’s hardly unique. And that map… once again, it listed about 15-20 stores in town. Four were open: a tofu shop, a local snack maker (2 items only, which weren’t bad), a TINY souvenir place, and one (admittedly cool) restaurant and store.
We were done in under 2 hours and had almost no lasting memories. There’s nothing *wrong* with this place, but it does NOT meet my expectations of a “world heritage site”. There simply isn’t enough here to see or do to justify that label. If you go and expect nothing at all, it’s ok. The museum is nice. If you go and expect “world heritage”…. Well, you’ll find why this is one of the lesser visited sites in Japan.

Very interesting to see how people lived in the Edo period. Foreigners get a discount. We got a free tour guide but others seemed not to get one so I think that it is just luck. The mines are very interesting but you should watch out for your head as if you are tall you might hit it on the ceiling. Went in the summer and the mines were a lot colder than it was outside. The nearby village is also very pretty; it is almost like you traveled back in time. Would recommend people who like geology or history.

It is convenient because you can board the bus from the parking lot.
The paid exhibition room at the World Heritage Center explains the various heritage sites that make up the World Heritage Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, so it's a good idea to take a look before going to the silver mine.
Also, the walking map ``Iwami Ginzan Mite Walk Map'' placed at the center entrance is free, so it's fun to get one and take a walk around the area. Also, the distance from the starting point, the ruins of the magistrate's office, to the mine shaft, Ryugenji Mabu, is a long distance, 3.1 km, so you can check your current location on the walking map.
Oh, and parking is free.

For a first time visitor by car, this is the safer and easier place to park your car. You will have to take a public bus from this center to the gateway to the Iwami-Ginzan area, which is basically one narrow street stretching from lower part of the creek to the upper part of the creek. The bus ride would cost yen 240 (US$2 or less), while the car park was free and abundant at this center.
It turned out that getting a rental bicycle (electric powered one at yen 700 for two hours) at a former gas station near the lower bus stop would be ideal lakes you enjoy uphill walk without shades for 2 km or so.

This is the main facility when sightseeing in Iwami Ginzan. You can't drive close to Iwami Ginzan to see the mine shafts, so you'll have to walk or rent a bicycle. It's a good idea to briefly learn about the history by looking at the exhibits, and if you go to the mine shaft, get a map and get a guide.

I've been curious about this place ever since it was registered as a World Heritage Site, and I was finally able to visit it. The exhibits at the center were nice and easy to understand, but the best part is the public tour of Mapo Okubo that is available here. It took about 3 hours in total, and we were in the mine for a few minutes, but it was worth it to listen to the guide's explanation and see the remains of silver ore being dug.

Great center that introduces to the whole history of the mining region in quite an interactive way! Almost all the information is accompanied with English translation which is very nice. It is only 20 min walk from the center of the charming Omori village.
So, if anyone is interested, I had a perfect day taking a 10:15am bus from Hiroshima directly to this center, learned about mining, walked to Omori and browsed it around a bit (it is gorgeous!), and from there took a 15 min ride (google maps knows it all) on a very cute small electric bus to the Ryugenji mine shaft (open to public without guides). And finally hiked from there for three hours through majestic forest to one of the most authentic hot springs in the country in Yunotsu.
Memorable day full of history, nature, hiking, and relaxation!

I didn't have any samples, so I just went with it, and it turned out to be rice with a fried egg and kakiage on top. Kakiage is too hard to cut with chopsticks, so you can't mix it with eggs and have to eat it separately.
I think kakiage is difficult to eat unless you dip it in tempura sauce before placing it on top.
Another thing is that since it's a rice dish, I wish it would come with miso soup or some kind of soup, but to be honest, it's only 850 yen.

北長門海岸国定公園, also known as Kita-Nagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park, is a picturesque observation spot located along National Route 191. The park offers a relaxing break from long drives and features a rocky area where ocean waves create tunnel-like holes. Despite some washed-up trash and crucian bugs, the park's large parking lot, rock cave, and private beach ambiance make it an appealing stopover, especially on sunny evenings.

Tokuyama Zoo is a well-established animal sanctuary that houses a range of exotic wildlife, including elephants, hippos and unique red pandas. In addition to these fascinating creatures, visitors can also observe a diverse collection of birds and majestic big cats in their natural habitats. This long-standing zoo has been operating for many years and continues to offer an enriching experience to those who appreciate the beauty and diversity of our planet's fauna.
Love this place, the last time I was here was three years ago. The monkeys are my favorite, specifically Shudarou and the other monkeys on monkey mountain. You should visit this place if you have the time, great place for families also.

Nice lil zoo. It was the closest I had ever been to a tiger or a lion. The kids loved it. Staff was friendly. It is not very big. Took our time and spent about 1hr 30min. There is a splash pad to cool down. Was not crowded at all no lines and plenty of parking which is in the back.

Animals in smaller cages then the main enclosure and a lot of construction work but not for the animals. That’s the point of the zoo I believe is to see the happy animals.
Christian Felts — Google review
One of the best hanami place. However, the animals were rather ordinary. We were expecting more hands-on experience and a bit disappointed not getting to see the polar bear. The hippo's house was so small and hope that the renovation will make great ease to the lonely hippo.

Small zoo with a few very old animal habitats. It looks like they are in the process of modernizing. The plus side is you get very close to the animals. The downside is the tiny habitats are pretty sad. The price is right though: ¥600 for adults and ¥300 for kids.
Stephen Behnken — Google review
It's a nice zoo for kids I would say. The small size of the zoo makes it hard for me as an adult to look at the animals because some of them look like they're going to go mad all cramped up. Fortunately, it appears the zoo is expanding a bit and renovating.
There's a place to eat, a place for some interactive fun with animals and a photo machine that's zoo themed. Staff were friendly and helpful. Zoo is walkable from the station but there's also a cheap bus service.
Mary H — Google review
Most depressing zoo I’ve ever been to. Almost all the animals need to see a vet. Birds feathers aren’t growing, bears are missing teeth, there’s a cage where you throw food at monkeys, all the cages are to small and the water is dirty

One of the best gardens in Yamaguchi. I’ll take this over Shukkeien in Hiroshima any day. Large sprawling grounds with massive tōrō (stone lanterns) and scenic paths that are great for exploring. Every scene is impressive. Parking is a short distance from the entrance and well marked with vending machines and a bathroom. Don’t park in the gravel next to the first gate as that’s a buss turn-around easement. The entrance to the garden is through the first gate and a short uphill walk on the path to the right.

Hofu Tenmangu Shrine, the first Shinto shrine in Japan, is renowned for its seasonal plum blossoms and traditional festivals. Visitors often come to pray for academic success and good luck in exams. The shrine boasts a beautiful park at the back and during cherry blossom season, it offers stunning views of the blossoms. A popular attraction is the Shunpuro hall which translates to "hall of spring breeze." This hall is believed to offer feelings of spring breeze throughout the year.
A very old and famous shrine at Hofu. We visited at dusk. Recommend to visit before sunset.
The music comes from shrine was awesome. There are a lots of cherry trees around the shrine.

The main reason why we came to Hofu. It is a beautiful shrine overlooking Hofu City. There are parking lots near and above the entrance, so you can easily find a parking spot. The Front entrance of the Shrine is filled with shops and restaurants. The top also has vendors with finger foods.
The view from the front of the torii gate at the foot of the mountain was amazing. I imagine that nighttime would be a beautiful site with lanterns lit up. There were few people and it was quiet and a beautiful shrine.
The scenery from the top of the stairway and the 800-year-old Shinboku is a masterpiece and powerful. Our kids loved it too.

Kanmon Bridge is a significant suspension bridge that links the westernmost part of Honshu, Japan, with the northernmost port of Kyushu. Completed in Showa 33, it has a total length of 780 meters and is exclusively for vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the nearby submarine tunnel to cross.
suspension bridge that spans the Kanmon Strait, connecting the cities of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture and Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The bridge is a prominent landmark in the region and is widely regarded as one of the most impressive bridges in Japan.
The bridge is approximately 1.2 kilometers long and stands at a height of 47 meters above the water. The view from the bridge is stunning, with the sparkling blue waters of the Kanmon Strait stretching out in all directions. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the island of Tsushima in the distance.
One of the best ways to experience the Kanmon Bridge is by taking a leisurely drive across it. The road is smooth and well-maintained, and there are plenty of pull-off areas where you can stop and take in the view. There's also a pedestrian walkway on the bridge, which is a great option if you want to take your time and really soak in the scenery.
Another popular way to experience the Kanmon Bridge is by taking a boat tour that passes underneath it. This is a great way to get a different perspective on the bridge and really appreciate its scale and grandeur.
Overall, I would highly recommend a visit to the Kanmon Bridge if you're in the Fukuoka or Yamaguchi area. It's a beautiful and impressive structure that's definitely worth seeing in person

The Akama Shrine is a Shinto temple that pays tribute to an emperor from the 12th century. The shrine boasts a striking crimson main gate and offers beautiful vistas. Yohann Junique — Google review
This shrine is popular with an ancient Earless Houichi tale, which is based on a little Emperor called Antoku's tragic death in a battle on the local water called dan-no-ura in 1185. The 6year old emperor was supported by the losing side, an unfortunate thing, and on the run. The Minamoto, the winning side caught up, had a battle then the courtiers picked him up before jumping into the sea with the boy. The shrine honors the Taira cran, the lost side. Now Houichi was an excellent Lute (Biwa) player. So good that the Taira ghosts turned up and guided this blind trainee monk to their graves for the own little concert. Houichi was happy enough to be led out every night to play for a seemingly noble crowd but his mentor monk realised Houichi was fading away and one night, caught him playing in front of the graves. What did this mentor do, to save the boy? You can Google it! 😁 Lovely place with a chrysanthemum as the emblem to show a member of Royal family tests here.

The Kanmon Strait, located between the Japanese islands of Honshu and Kyushu, serves as a vital route for both leisure boats and cargo ships. Onta Pottery Village, located about 15 km north of Hita, is a charming vintage village that offers a glimpse into traditional pottery making. The village is deeply connected to its natural surroundings, using river water to grind clay and wood from local shops for kiln fuel. Visitors can witness skilled potters at work in their workshops and explore the handmade pottery studios and shops.
We went on a rainy day so we only went to two shops, but the potteries are so nice, we bought some beautiful tea cups. The shops are unattended and you need to ring the bell if you want to buy. They are professional craftsmen busy working in the workshops, not professional customer service employees, so don't be a jerk going in.
Megan Cao — Google review
Am a potter hence wanted to visit this place to possibly make some ceramics or buy some unique pieces. However, there were probably only 4-5 shops that were opened, with many store owners being quite nonchalant and products were limited. Not as wide of a range as one would’ve expected. Interesting to still see how they pound the yellow clay using the force of the water. Love the cute (and only food store) soba and udon shop!
Wendy — Google review
It is somewhat unfortunate that it was not easy to purchase the pottery because there was no separate explanation about it. The store consists of about 8-9 stores.

When art, tradition, and nature seamlessly fuse, the resulting uniqueness establishes an identity of its own. Originality can't be replicated nor transferred; it exclusively resides within the soul of the creator. This is what it is.

Traditional village full of potters. The museum is a great place to start. You can then wander down the road and visit all the pottery studios and shops. Everything is handmade, without machinery. The clay is even pounded by the power of the stream running through the village. Very narrow roads to and from the village.

A village dedicated to pottery. Serene and tranquil, located in the middle of mountain and forest. Really nice walking in the village and admiring all the pottery items.

This pottery village is a gem! Totally connected with the natural environment, river water is used to grind the clay taken from the river bank, very fine grinding, the potters move their wheel with their feet, the kilns are built using the natural inclination of the terrain and use the small wood pieces that remain from the local wood shops in the surroundings, I met potters with 50 years of expertise. And the local cafe prepares teuchi soba nooddles. This cafe is almost on top of the river, soft refreshing wind enters from the window and refreshes the air and brings the music of a calm stream. The lady in charge of the restaurant was very kind, loved it!

Nabegataki Falls is a popular tourist attraction that can be reached by a short hike. This illuminated waterfall is a beautiful sight, and visitors can take a walk behind the falls for an even more immersive experience. The spot offers free parking, but there is an entrance fee of 300 yen per adult and 150 yen per child. It's important to wear good shoes as some parts of the path leading to the waterfall can be slippery.
Amazing waterfall. When we visited it was during the week so it wasn't too busy and we could get some good photos. The walk down is not difficult but has many stairs. It takes only about 5 mins to reach the falls from the car park.
I would highly recommend visiting!

The most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen in Japan. Viewing the waterfall from the cave behind it is an amazing experience! It was so beautiful and peaceful which cannot be truly experienced unless you feel it in person.
The entry fee is 300 per person. Washroom and parking available.
Dil Ashrafi Anandi — Google review
The waterfall and surrounding forrest is beautiful. You'll get many chances to view it, even from behind!
It's a bit of drive from central Kumamoto, but if you have the time and chance I'd recommend to drive there. The scenery and view from the car ride is also astonishing. There is a shuttle bus (optional, adults 300¥/kids 150¥) to get you from the nearby parking lot to the start of short walk (mostly stairs) before you get to the waterfall.
Went there with my wife and her family during the last weekend of golden week so it was a bit crowded. But it wasn't really any problem to walk around.
Leo Johansson — Google review
Special photos can be taken inside the fall. Remember to being yourself a tripod, and set long-exposure for 2 or more seconds for the great photos of the fall. The car park can easily get full during weekends, and you might have to wait for a while (but not too long).
Alvin Liu — Google review
Wow! This place is so beautiful!!
You can also walk behind the waterfall, which is fantastic.
If you don’t take a lot of photos, like me, then 30 minutes should be enough time here. I spent almost an hour here though. I took my time and took lots of photos with my Nikon.
There’s free parking available, but there is a fee to enter the waterfalls. When I went on 13Nov20, the fee was ¥300 per adult and ¥150 per child.
As someone else mentioned, definitely wear good shoes. I had my hiking shoes on so I didn’t have a problem, but some parts can get slippery. Especially when walking down to go behind the waterfall.
The path leading to the waterfall is good and well maintained.

Well worth the drive here! It's a short flight of stairs and you can see the waterfall! You can walk behind it or go down to the flat ground to take some nice photos!

If no car can very challenging to reach here. And surrounding just this attraction. But it is very nice indeed

One of the best places to cool down the heat in this deadly hot summer in Japan!!! Mostly covered in shadow of trees making the place more relaxing... There’s like a nice and shallow pond under the falls that is very good to make yourself swim (with your kids also!). The scenery is surely beautiful. It is a couple hours driving from the central Kumamoto but is worth visiting!!!

Tosu Premium Outlets is a contemporary shopping center that offers a vast selection of international brand-name items at discounted prices. Unlike other premium outlets, such as Tokyo/Kobe and Gotemba, Tosu Premium Outlets is less crowded and more relaxed, making it an enjoyable shopping experience for anyone. With its spacious layout and numerous brand options, shoppers can easily spend hours browsing through the various stores.
A nice place to take a walk. It has about 170 brands and a huge food court. Bargains for Nike, adidas quite ok. Tosu premium outlet can be reached via JR train from Hakata train station to Tosu station, then take bus 20 across the street, which departs hourly to reach Tosu Premium outlet. There are more public buses operating during Saturdays and Sundays, compared to weekdays.
Wai Peng Chan — Google review
This outlet is large and has many options. They range from shoe brand shops to clothing outlets to confectionery. There is also a food court with restaurants such as Ippudo. However, the food court is very crowded and it is hard to find an area to sit. However, I still think it is a great outlet and I recommend people to come here.

This outlet has many brands and it is easy to walk in one round. All shops are in ground floor. Public transportation to this outlet is a little bit less and need to catch the bus with the right schedule.

Lots of great stores. Great deals. Dog friendly. Dogs must be in a stroller or holder. Some stores might require them to be fully sealed in the stroller or carrier before going in (Nike). There is a trash can for dog poop before going into the outlet

Tosu is worth going to, plenty of shops. Found really good deals on New Balance and Asics shoes here in Tosu. Not every crew member speaks English fluently so get your Google Translate ready. Also there's a nice food hall serving a variety of cuisines when you need a break from shopping.
Francis Mendoza (Chiel) — Google review
Not all stores offered genuinely appealing bargains! Some of them was so obviously out-of-dated as stores only took a fraction of discount out of the original price-tag! The dining choices were almost limited!
007Decky — Google review
Very good parking facilities. Good and big cafeteria. If they have more branded shops, i would give 5 stars
V L — Google review
Very crowded over the weekend. Majority of the shops are the same as other premium outlets, Nike, New Balance etc.

Tosu Premium Outlet is highly recommended to those who enjoy shopping! The easiest way to get to the outlet from Fukuoka city is by bus. The bus departs from Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal and the journey is approximately an hour. The return bus fare is very reasonable but there is only one trip on weekdays.
There are some very good bargains for a few brands like Levis, Coach, Kate-Spade, and Adidas but in general, the discounts from most stores are not great. Some of the items and handbags are rather out of season. There are over 100 stores in this premium outlet and a few good hours are definitely needed just to visit half of the shops.
There is a clean and comfortable food court located within the premium outlets and apart from Japanese food, Korean & fusion cuisine is available. There is also a Baskin-Robbins in the food court. Weekdays are the best to visit and it is never crowded at all!
Ting Ting — Google review
Decent factory outlet, don't expect rock bottom pricing here, but just decent value discounted off season clothes.
Good outlets are: Helly Hansen / North Face, Adidas, New Balance, Nike, Crocs (only the ones on discount). Some others are jokes and have nothing really on discount.
Snap up the stuff fast at Helly Hansen once it opens! Dine at the food court! Great chain japanese food there.
Yang B — Google review
It's just like a premium outlet back in America. It has all the big name brands and then some. We walked to the outlet from the train station, so we didn't buy a lot of stuff. There is so much stuff, it's a shoppers' dream place.

Had a great time in Tosu Premium Outlet,
- there’s bus No.20 to Tosu station,
- and bus No.30 to Yayoigaoka station,
- both about 15-20mins wait,
- there’s taxi there too, but I recommend the bus it’s just 200-280yen dirt cheap,
There’re restaurants and food court too, I recommend the food court because the queue is not that long and the food is cheaper, I ate around 2pm and the crowd is still there, don’t recommend to eat at 12pm you need to queue really long,
- the selection at BAPE is really limited if you’re going Tosu premium outlet for this, all sizes probably S-M, hardly L, the coach pricing wise is slightly more expensive than US premium outlets, but there’s more stocks compared to US, and the quality that they took care of the products is superb, you can drop by FrancFranc too lotsa furnitures and stuff you can buy there, Mr.Tanabe from Coach Men is awesome, there’s GAP and SEIKO, I took a photo of the map and list of shops, do take a look

it's not as crowded nor as busy as the Tokyo/Kobe premium outlets, so made it so relaxing and enjoyable to shop here! lots of brands and big place, could spend hours in here! once arrive, go to the tourist information centre then you can redeem coupons upon presenting your passport.

Very comfortable and relax outlet. It's not as huge as the one in Gotemba. However, it's much closer if you rent a car.
Quite a lot of brands are there and discounted items are attractive.
You can easily spend the whole day in the outlet.

The Kurume City Art Museum is a peaceful museum located in serene gardens, showcasing the works of renowned Western-style artists from the region. Though it may not be very large, its exhibitions are impressive and constantly changing, ensuring visitors always have something new to see. In addition to the art museum itself, there is also a library on site for visitors to peruse.
This is such a lovely garden! It is full of flowers, fountains, ponds, waterfalls, bridges, los of koi and a swan. Japanese really know how to do gardens.

Aso Cuddly Dominion is a charming zoo that houses numerous types of bears in simple enclosures. In addition, it offers an opportunity to pet bear cubs and dogs. Guests can also feed the bears and enjoy other fun activities within the premises. The petting area is particularly delightful with a chance to interact with baby goats and other animals. The zoo also boasts spectacular shows such as races of baby pigs at earlier times during the day.
Came here early in the morning for the helicopter, but stayed for the animals. Most of the animals are kind and you are allowed to pet or feed them. Food could be bought from vending machines in park including bear food. Decent cozy zoo and excellent helicopter ride of course.

We were there in winter, amidst a cold snap. So all the animals looked really cold and miserable. Perhaps summer would be better? But the place is a little rundown though.
Because it was a day trip from Kumamoto for us, not sure if it was worth the trip. The only saving grace was probably when it started to snow.
Shufen Liang — Google review
You can touch the baby goats and other animals. We went there only for the last hour they were open that day so we rushed to see animals. You can see races of baby pigs and other shows if you go at earlier times during the day!:)
Hi w — Google review
Many animals to pet! The only reason is not 5 stars is because when you go to pet the bears you think you will get a little cub. They brought one really large cub, not small cuddly. It was heavy and constantly eating. It was half the size of the adults and it wasn't what you expected 🙃 still it was cool. I just think when you pay to pet the animal you should have a choice if you don't want to pet a big one and prefer a smaller one. My daughter went there excited and then she was terrified. Not ready for that. They will take photos for you but there were tears in every photo. 😢 So there was that. They have a nice selection of animals. And a show where they have birds of flight where they allow part of the audience to participate. That was fun. No photos allowed there, though, so just in memory. Lovely grounds and so nice to feed pet and interact with so many animals. Thank you for the nice experience. I recommend for families and anyone. Enjoy 😉 😘

Typical small zoo. The cage is too tiny for the bear, I really feel sorry for that. I like the pigs, they are funny and super cute when they are doing the running competition. The shows are quite good. The kids will like it especially the monkeys and dogs show (as known as James-kun and Pung-kun). And don't miss the Helicopter tour around mount ASO! Super great experience and the price is reasonable.
MITHUNA27 — Google review
We came here on a day trip to Aso and it is one of the most depressing zoos we have been to. The bears are kept in small concrete areas, and they force the baby bears to dress up and do photo ops with families. Other animals have it a bit better, although the park does not seem to be well-maintained. The small animals are kept in way too small cages (especially the rabbits).
Perhaps the only thing really worth coming to this park for is the helicopter tours of Mt. Aso, but considering the zoo itself and how the animals are treated, I'm not sure it's even worth it. I'd recommend just taking the bus to the volcano itself and walking around like everyone else.
Tyler — Google review
Absolutely heartbreaking.
Many of the animals didn’t have adequate space or even toys. Many of the bears were just in bare, concrete enclosures, with dirty moss floors. Many were just pacing like they were in prison. And hell, with the concrete everywhere they may as well have been in a prison.
Then there’s the cockatoo who didn’t even have a cage he could move in. The parrots tied to post, of which one was shivering and another had started plucking it’s feathers- a sign of unhappiness in birds.
Lastly, you can round out your visit seeing one lone capybara in an enclosure that’s like 90% water despite them being a social and mostly land based animal. Or this sad emaciated pony. Or the sun bear cubs which have been taken from their moms to roam around a tiny little box with just a literal kitchen pot of water and no toys or anything.
I want to believe the employees mean well here but I feel so bad for these animals. Had I seen this pictures I never would’ve come and this place needs serious work… Maybe if they had allocated more money to building animal pens then buying a helicopter or building a pagoda garden the animals would have a better quality of life. If you love animals please don’t go here.
Plain and simple, this is animal abuse. Can you imagine living on hard concrete day and night, your entire life, with nothing to keep you busy? In a tiny area with no room to run?

Fun overall. 2-3 hours are great. Shows were good even I don’t understand Japanese.
Horse riding is cool. My kid asked for the second time. Lots of bears to see and they were quite active.
When we arrived at 230pm the helicopter tickets already sold out. Turn out may be a blessing to save a lot of money because we could actually drive up there and see.
Some animals are indeed sad. Like the chimpanzee- feels lonely. Many animal is a one man bank.
Henry N — Google review
There were quite a few black bears. That was nice. (but it was also sad to see so many bears just locked up, especially 1 bear per cage - they seemed so lonely)
There is an animal show(?). It was very conflicting for me to watch that, considering animal rights.
But the place itself is well kept.
I think it would be good to visit with kids. There were group visitors and couples too.
It was raining a lot, but they had good umbrella there for visitors to borrow. That was good.

Unique volcano viewing experience on a helicopter!
DEFINITELY WOULD RECOMMEND all of you traveling to Aso to take this ride. We chose Plan E for the ride (50000 yen for max 3 pax, 20-min ride) as we have 3 people. 20 mins is enough for you to fly around the whole crater so that you can have a look of the volcano at different angles. Booking in advance is not available as it depends on the weather, but you may call on the morning of the day before you go to check whether there's time slot available (the staff know a little bit English so you don't need to worry much about communication).

I stopped by because I wanted to wear a kappa more and put a warm warmer on it.
I was also hungry, so when I looked for something
It wasn't long after the store opened, but suddenly there was dumplings and meat buns using horse meat from Kumamoto Prefecture!
I bought it immediately and stuffed my cheeks in the information room (rest room) while shrinking my cold body.
It was so delicious!
I suddenly ate dumplings at a famous store, but this one was by far the best! ! ! ! !
Sweet potatoes with thick skin and just the right amount of firmness
There is no doubt about the distribution of the bean paste.
I want to eat it every day!
Suddenly dumplings are not so common in Tokyo...
Delicious food is always local.
There was an old lady who carefully cleaned the information room from the morning, and she was very kind. I passed by on a trip in a faraway place, but in the rain, my cold and lonely heart and body warmed up.
Spacious and full of goods.
There are plenty of chairs and tables, and a roof.

Suizenji Jojuen Garden, also known as Suizenji Garden, is a must-visit in Kumamoto. This tranquil garden showcases traditional Japanese landscaping and historic landmarks in miniature. Built by the famous Hosokawa family in the 17th century, it features a stunning Japanese landscape with a crystal-clear pond fed by mineral-rich underground water from Mt. Aso.
Beautiful traditional Japanese garden where you can walk around and enjoy its serenity dating back to 1632. It costs ¥400 to enter for adults and takes about 2 hours to walk around the garden grounds. There are 20 monuments and exhibits to view inside the garden. It was very peaceful here and I recommend you visit for a Zen experience.

Beautiful garden with very well maintained plants. It’s very calming walking around the park. Was lucky to catch red maple tree leaves still blooming at the end of November. I would imagine if I came earlier and all the trees were red, the view would be even more gorgeous. You can buy some fish food at the entrance if you wanna attract the ducks and fish to you at the pond areas. Tickets are at 400 yen per adult

This garden wasn’t in our original plan but we have a half-day spared and it’s a great weather so we visited here. It’s a pretty nice Japanese garden and it seems to be prettier when during cherry blossom. However, it’s a calm place and can have a nice walk around. The dessert right in front of the entrance is worth a try! You can come visit while you have time!

A convenient tram ride to Suizenji Park stop and a short 5 minutes walk from the tram stop.
It was raining on the day I went and yet it was still so beautiful and calm in its own way. Even locals are taking their stroll in the garden with their umbrellas … I think that says alot about the ambience of the park.
There is also a cafe by the lake that you can have some tea and sweet treat. Great place for personal contemplation too.
There is also a cherry square where people visit every year for cherry blossoms viewing. Similarly, there are lots of maple trees for viewing during autumn. 4 seasons, different blooms, same garden.
If you are a tourist, get a one-day or 24- hour tram pass, show it to the counter to get a discount for the entrance! Instead of 400 Yen per pax, it was 360 Yen.

This garden is a really remarkable place. It has a replica Mount Fuji, built for the lord's entertainment several centuries ago. There are many varieties of plants, animals, and features that make this park a really unique place to visit. Near the garden entrance, there are several shops and cafes. We had sushi and walked the garden, then had an ice cream. It was a wonderful day, even in winter.

Beautiful garden with a variety of plants and trees, all clearly labelled. Information booklet gave me insight into things I might have missed as a non-native and plenty of places to sit and admire the stunning scenery.

Beautiful well kept 17th century old garden. The ¥400 ticket was well worth the experience. So many beautiful trees, birds, and fish. I strongly recommended

Suizenji Jojuen Garden. a traditional Japanese style garden, is probably one of the most famous travel attractions in Kumamoto. The Garden was created from 1636 and took about 80 years to reach the current garden facilities and style. In 1929, it was designated as a national treasure.
Inside the Garden, there are Izumi Shrine and Inari Shrine. There is also a tea house, Kojin-Denju-no-Ma Tea House, which is free for entrance visit, [tea service charge is separate]. The said tea house probably has the best spot for the visitors to enjoy the view of the pine trees and Pond whose water was provided by the under-ground springs of Mount Aso. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, after Kumamoto earthquake in 2016, the underground springs from Mount Aso stopped flowing to the Pond, and the Pond in Suizenji Jojuen is shrinking in size.
Visitors can take Kumamoto city tram from Kumamoto Train Station and get off at Suizenji Park and take a few minutes' walk to the Garden. The entrance fee is $ 400 Yen for the adult, and $200 for the children or students under 18.

although just a small patch of green inside the local residential area, it is a beautiful traditional Japanese garden, even on a cloudy day. we enjoyed a 2-hour slow walk and checked the delicate details from corner to corner. a tea room is by the pond, nice to stop over for afternoon tea too. just 15 minutes from the town (by train, or by car), and good parking is within walking distance. worth putting it as your destination too.

Beautiful gardens. Loved enjoying the view from the teahouse inside the gardens (pay extra to sit inside - it's worth it). Coin lockers, bathrooms, and vending machines available. Doesn't take very long to walk around but well worth a visit.

I enjoyed this park, the entrance is a bit hard to find from Google, quite a walk from the tram station if you don't know your way, locate the car park then you will find it quickly.
very nice afternoon walk, the park is looked after well and we loved the Japanese traditional garden set up.
you can visit the resting area to see paintings of it in the old days. surprised by the nice winter plum flower

It was a very beautiful park and we went on a sunny day. they have the biggest Koi fish I’ve ever seen they really like to eat. The Koi fish were doing sort of little turns. It was cute. It’s actually not very big you can get around it kind of fast, but there are some shrines to go to and it’s a nice place where people wear kimonos to dress up there’s a nice walking path and a restaurant too, like the one where you sit on the ground and have a table in front of you to eat and there’s a souvenir shops and restaurants outside as well.
Mariela Caldera — Google review
This is the star attraction for Kumamoto along with the castle. It’s not too large so it’s a relaxing and scenic walking experience. Landscaping is very similar to the colors of the rolling hills and farm land around kumamoto. You can feed the pigeons and koi if you like. Parking lots are near the garden for about 500 yen. It’s a pretty place and super relaxing to simply sit and take in the beauty.

Very beautiful garden. It imparts a sense of calm as soon as you enter the gate. It is a good place to sit and reflect on your life, meditate, contemplate nature, or just instagram posts in general if you’re into that.

Beautiful garden, well maintained. I have good food and matcha + dessert at the restaurant and teahouse. More touristy than other gardens I went to, but not necessarily more special.

It is one of the famous tourist spots here in Kumamoto, Japan. This garden is pretty tranquil and relaxing that can be enjoyed at any given time. They have a tea ceremony room facing the garden if you wanted to upgrade your trip here, plus they have a temple inside. The place is pretty convenient since it is near the train station. I highly recommend visiting the place if you have spare time.

Kumamoto Castle, located in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, is a reconstructed Japanese-style castle that sits atop a hill. Originally completed in 1607, the castle houses a history museum and covers an area of 5.3km. Despite ongoing construction work, it remains one of the three famous castles in Japan with thirteen structures designated as important cultural assets.
Exceeded all expectations! Really fun castle to explore!
The myths that you can read in the castle museum are so interesting! And you can download the castle app and read all the captions in English. The app also has an audio feature, but the reader is so slow and robotic, it would take ages to actually listen to it drone on and on. They should add a 2x speed option or something. But it is nice to read the captions in English so I recommend it.
Also the shopping area is really cool, and it feels like you are in the alley ways of the old castle town. There was even a samurai dance event that was cute.

Nice weather with cherry blossom session is great for a visit.
The castle is currently still under rebuild due to the earthquake a few years ago, causing major damage for the building and surroundings.
Luckily, the main structure remains, and we still can see a nice castle standing still up there!
We enjoy the surroundings and all the cherry blossom.

The renovation work is pretty much complete and I was able to view the castle from an elevated walkway wrapping around the outside. Inside the castle is a 6 storey museum going through many details about the castle. Definitely one of my favourite castles in Japan. Bring good company and you’ll enjoy it.

This is my second visit to Kumamoto castle. I came back in 2019 while it was still under repair and today the repairs were finished on the main and side keep but some other buildings are still in dire need of work after the 2016 earthquake. It is a reconstruction but it is still a beautiful castle. The unused of course does not have the taste and the character of the originals but there are so few left of the originals anyway.
For the time period the castle is on extended opening time until 9pm versus the usual 4:30pm closing time of winter. This allows amazing night pictures.
Nicolas weng kan — Google review
Even though it is a reconstruction of the original, it's a beautiful statue with rich history entrenched from it's very foundations to the top of the citadel. Despite being damaged by an earthquake back in 2016, the resilience of a people and the structure maintained for the purpose of revitalizing this city's touristic value, can very well be appreciated by all who venture here. This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful standing castles in Japan.
Kingston Obike — Google review
Beautiful castle on par with Hemeji for size and grandeur. The interior is remade as a museum, but there are enough interactive exhibits and holdovers from the original construction that it still feels like a castle.
Displays are in Japanese with limited or no English, but still enjoyable and understandable. The dark interior is refreshing on a hot day.
While much of the castle is still under repair from earthquake damage, you can see some great views from the purpose-built viewing walkway.
Josh Diddams — Google review
Incredible castle. Just a shame that all explanations inside are exclusively in Japanese making it a quick visit inside for foreign tourists not speaking Japanese. Highly recommend a visit however if you are coming to Kumamoto.

wow! this castle is absolutely breathtaking !
halfway destroyed after a big earthquake a couple of years ago, they're about to rebuild the entire area matter of fact stone by stone.
They massively reinforced the entire castle from the ground up with a steel frame inside the masonry. therefore the interior is absolutely modern-style but still classic and original external... super splendid and massive work they've done. however it takes another 30+ years to rebuild the entire place after that huge earthquake.
Ray Rusch — Google review
Beautiful castle but sadly greatly damaged from the recent earthquake. Hopefully they continue to improve the looks as time moves on! Highly recommend checking it out. The view up top is worth it.

The castle is just so elegant and rich in history. I was not expecting it to be very big. They reconstructed it after it was heavily damaged and they made the inside like a modern museum. I just had a challenge understanding the descriptions as there's no written english translation.
Entrance fee for the castle along is ¥800.
At the time I visited, there are many construction on-going around the area.
Kumamoto, a city located on the Japanese island of Kyushu, is known for its historical sites and cultural attractions. The deep-fried chicken has a salty taste that is taken out from the store
seems to go well with beer

This is the area below Kumamoto castle with shops and exhibits. You can get sweet and savory snacks or a full meal. There is a museum dedicated to the effects of the earthquake on the castle and its surroundings. If would like to help out with the reconstruction, there is an office for donations. ¥10,000 or more will get you a card for free entry to the castle and other local sites and museums (check the list.) Reconstruction will take many more years and requires much in funding to get it completed. Anything you can add will help.

For tourist attraction, read food hall. If there are stalls selling anything other than food and drink I didn't find them.
The buildings are designed to look like traditional Japanese houses so are quite pretty. The Japanese have a culture of keeping places clean so there is not the sort of overflowing bins and rubbish you would see in the west.
There is an area where they put on shows, though we didn't see any so can't comment on the quality.
The main attraction of Sakura no baba Josaien is the fact it serves as the way into the castle and you can get a beer on the way.

Nice for the atmosphere, but its a typical tourist trap gift shop/eatery stall. It didnt help it was rainy the day we were there and forced to buy umbrella at the gift shop (although 500 yen for one isn't such a price gouge and about par with a convenience store). But if you are looking for a one stop shop for omiyage, this is the right place.

This place was very nice to visit. At the top of the area is the Kumamoto Castle still in existence since the 17th century. The 2016 Kumamoto earthquake left the castle with outer tiles fallen and structural damage. But the reconstruction is an ongoing process using technological advances of anti-earthquake techniques, so in some places you may see the rebuilding. At the foot of the castle is an area with speciality shops selling local specialties like horsemeat sashimi (basashi), mustard-stuffed deep-fried lotus root (karashi renkon), and sweet-potato dumplings (ikinari dango), I recommend eating them all and don't forget the ice cream too! A very good recommend!

Although I didn't have to wait in line for the washing area or the sauna, I got the impression that there were quite a few people in there.

The thermometer in the sauna says it's 90 degrees Celsius, which feels good, but the smell and smell is... harsh.

The open-air bath was also lukewarm, and there were no chairs for bathing in the open air, so I took a bath in the open air on a chair in the washing area in the open-air area.

I stopped by on my way from Saitoshi to Kumamoto. I didn't go to the hot springs, but I liked the food so much that I ate there both at noon and at night on the same day (lol).
The Nishimaira salmon bowl was delicious with the flavor of ginger, shiso leaves, and small onions added to the fatty salmon.I ordered a large portion for an additional 100 yen.
Morinoko set meal includes bamboo shoots, shiitake mushrooms, and chicken nanban. It was my first time to try Nanban with bamboo shoots and shiitake mushrooms, but it also came with homemade tartar sauce and was delicious!
The cutlets in the cutlet curry and katsudon are also very filling! Not only was it delicious, but the large amount of rice made me feel very full.
For an additional 100 yen, you can add miso soup to your rice bowl, etc., and the piping hot dagojiru (miso soup with dumplings) warmed me to the core.
What really made me happy was that the cold food was delicious. Usually when I eat out, I'm worried about the smell of chlorine, but the water here was delicious♪ I thought that because the water was delicious, the food was also delicious!
The staff were attentive, disinfecting the tables, pouring water, and making us feel at ease.

Nationally recognized as a historic location, Hitoyoshi Castle is a 12th-century fortress in ruins that has undergone restoration of its stone wall. The castle also features informational boards and a museum dedicated to its rich history.
Though the castle itself was destroyed in the early Meiji era, we were so impressed with its great stone wall, which was great enough for us to imagine the old age.

Was expecting more ruins. Or at least more to see.
Large stone stairs claiming to the top of where the castle was. Views were not so good.

Remote place, but so calm and quiet, slow walk and feel the atmosphere of ancient time.

(Translated by Google) Since the stone walls are being repaired, you cannot enter the castle ruins from the tourist parking lot, so I parked my car in the park at the back and headed to the castle tower ruins.
Construction is expected to be completed in February 2020, so if you plan to travel, we recommend planning your trip after that date.
The castle seems to be Hirayama Castle, and it feels like a castle on a small mountain.
The stone wall here has a small eave-like structure attached to the top of the stone wall, and is called Musha Gaeshi.
It's a fairly unusual structure, so let's take a closer look at it.
The way the stone walls are laid is thought to be ``field-style wood'', but most of the stones used are tuff, so the stones are quite beautiful and have the feel of a carved hagi.
The tuff is only found in this area, or rather, it is a tuff that does not originate from Mt. Aso.

Additionally, we are currently undergoing repair work on the stone walls due to the heavy rains that occurred in Kyushu in 2020. It's a little difficult to head to the main enclosure, so be sure to follow the directions.

The neighboring Shimazu clan ruled the same territory for the longest time in the country (about 700 years), but the Sagara clan also ruled for about the second longest period. Although Hitoyoshi is not a very large town, the castle ruins are quite impressive and worth seeing. Part of the stone wall could not be broken down due to the previous river flooding. It is unclear whether it can be accessed from other locations.

The castle is in the form of a Hirayama Castle, and is located at the confluence of the Kuma River and the Sacred River, with the two rivers serving as a moat, and the east and south of the castle effectively utilizing the mountain slopes and cliffs. The Ninomaru and Honmaru were placed on the mountain, and the Tamon Yagura was placed on the Chest River near the confluence, and the area inside of it, where the old Hitoyoshi City Hall and Hitoyoshi Castle History Museum are located, was also inside the castle. be. 2024.1 1204年から1207年に築城され、1871年に廃城となる。

It can be said that it was a rare family because it ruled the same area from the Kamakura period to the Meiji Restoration.
The castle was completely burnt down at the end of the Edo period and during the Satsuma Rebellion, and no buildings remain, but only the Horiai Gate shown in the image remains. The stone walls remain in a form reminiscent of the bygone era, and the scale of the building can be seen.
Inside the castle are the Otate Rui Garden, Sagara Shrine, and Sagara Gokoku Shrine, where the successive heads of the Sagara clan are enshrined as the main deities.
The Hitoyoshi area suffered damage from the floods in 2020, and reconstruction efforts are currently underway around the Hitoyoshi Castle ruins and the Kuma River basin.

The Aoi Aso Shrine is a peaceful and serene complex of Shinto shrines located in Kumamoto Prefecture. With its intricate carvings, sculptures, and thatched roofs, the shrine has a historical significance spanning over 1200 years. Though not large in size, it is definitely worth visiting for its unique architectural beauty and cultural value. However, visitors are not allowed inside the buildings as only priests have access to them.
The only one national treasure in Kumamoto Perfecture, Japan. This building is a Jinja (Shrine).

Designated as a national treasure, it is a very relaxing shrine. Many ducks were resting in the moat in front of the torii gate of the shrine. I went there in early July, and the lotus flowers were in full bloom. I was impressed because it was my first time to go during the lotus flower season. Next time I would like to go during the fall foliage season. I'm looking forward to seeing how beautiful it will be🤗,

It seems that it was hard to soak in water up to the top of the torii due to flood damage. The pond is covered with lotus leaves and has many carp. The red bridge is also beautifully repaired and stunning. You can feel the history at the old shrine. There was also a collaboration video with Natsume's Book of Friends, and Nyanko-sensei was also on sale at the shop.

It's fun just looking at the classics such as takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and archery, as well as charcoal-grilled yakitori, grilled pork, gyoza, seafood, and women's clothing. Many people come by car, but many also use the Kitto Line, and stations have opened temporary counters to accommodate them. Inside the car, men and women of all ages were engrossed in conversation, holding souvenirs.
