McDowell Dam Recreation Area
Park
Nature & Parks
The park McDowell Dam Recreation Area is a delightful place with an enchanting trail surrounding the lake. It offers a diverse array of bird species and an abundance of trees, plants, and flowers, providing captivating views of the lake from various vantage points. The park is highly regarded in the Bismarck area for over three decades and has been cherished by families who have brought their children and now their grandchildren to enjoy its amenities.
This has been one of our favorite Bismarck area parks to come to for over 30 years! We brought our children here and now are bringing our grand children. Love the beach, the play areas, the walking areas. Great memories are made here.

Always a great day at McDowell! Whether you're BBQn or having fun in the water this place doesn't disappoint. I've been to a birthday party here, celebrated the 4th, and we plan to come back

Nice and easy walking walking trail with birds and other wildlife. There is parking and grills for people to barbecue. You can do water activities.

Spacious, with a couple good fishing docks. There's some designated swimming areas, and kayaking and boating is very common there as well. A pleasant place to take the family.

The trail around the lake is wonderful! I saw dozens of bird species and a great variety of trees, plants and flowers, with excellent views of the lake from different heights and angles. I will certainly be returning. I expect it will be especially glorious in Autumn.

Beautiful little out of the way park. Nice lake and picnic spots. Nice restrooms. Paved walking path around the park. Dogs on leash welcome

The best recreational place around. I love the running trails-- so very well maintained. The dogs love snooping and sniffing along the trails.

This a little gem of a park. We go there to kayak. Some go to swim at a sandy beach. Numerous picnic areas.

It was very nice place to walk my friends dog, while she is in the hospital.
The National Buffalo Museum is a log building showcasing Native American art and artifacts, located within a recreated frontier village. The museum provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the history of bison herds that once roamed the prairies. Additionally, the museum features albino bisons residing in the area. Alongside the museum, the village offers a chance for visitors to explore its pioneer town.
Great experience! Every time I visit this museum I enjoy the fascinating collection of artifacts and displays. It's peaceful, pleasant, and certainly a gem worth visiting! RECOMMEND

I was driving along Interstate 94 and saw a huge buffalo standing on a hill off to the north. I decided to Check it out and discovered it was part of the National Buffalo Museum. This turned out to be a wonderful stop. The National Buffalo Museum is located near a frontier Village and highlights the history of the Buffalo that once roamed the plains and today’s efforts to preserved the remaining herds. The highlight of the museum is a white buffalo named White Cloud who was once part of the Museums small herd. White Cloud died in 2016 and is displayed as part of an exhibit inside the museum. I spent about an hour walking through the museum and thing walked about a quarter mile out to Dakota Thunder, the 25-foot tall 60-ton concrete buffalo that I had seen from the Interstate. It is billed as “the worlds largest buffalo” and just has to be one of North Dakota’s most popular Roadside attractions. This is an excellent museum and a perfect place to break up the drive along I-94.

We stopped here to see the World's Biggest Buffalo (we used to be bison ranchers), and we stayed to take in the old western town and the museum. What an awesome place to explore! It's not too far off the main interstate either.
We really enjoyed the museum and we spent way too much money in the gift shop - worth it! Haha.
There isn't a ton of sparking on site, but enough, and there were adequate handicap parking spots for us for my Mom.
The young ladies running the entry of the museum were absolute sweethearts and super helpful. They packed our breakable items perfectly, and those items made it all the way home to Ontario.
If you're looking for somewhere to explore this summer, this would be a great place to start!

This stop stands out as one of the biggest surprises on an 8000 mile road trip thru the western US. They have the 'worlds largest buffalo'!! The museum and pioneer town are nicely done. Probably some other stuff I missed!

Super friendly staff!! Lots of info and able to see a couple bison heard from the parking lot after taking very informative tour through the museum!!

Great little museum, awesome gift shop, and kind attendants working. Wish I could have seen the live buffalo, not sure where they were at

Really informative! Lots of displays and hands on exhibits. Buffalo roaming the fields. Terrific little recreated town. Great history and of course a giant buffalo statue! So worth the visit!
Julia Lounsberry — Google review
Reasonably priced and very informative, this was a great stop on our route (about halfway) from Fargo to Bismarck North Dakota. Lots of buffalo knowledge and Native American artifacts made the museum very interesting.
The plight of the Buffalo at the hands of European settlers was heartbreaking, and the fact that places like this helped to bring them back is refreshing to say the least.
Zac Clark — Google review
Something fun to do while heading down I-94. Definitely a tourist attraction, but enjoyable. The small museum provides a 17 minute film that covers the progression of their namesake animal. There is enough interesting things in the museum and pioneer village to keep kids or grandkids interested for a bit while the family gets to stretch their legs. Good for a 30-45 minute break.
sj mbring — Google review
Amazing museum on "America's mammal"! Large display of information, artifacts and interactive exhibits for kids and adults alike. The museum just seems refreshed and new, very clean, and well cared for. Check on the herd roaming around too!
Josh VH — Google review
We really enjoyed this museum. Great hands on exhibits for children. Beautiful play room for kids. Educational experience for all of us.
Mike Kobzik — Google review
The advertising for this site indicated that we could observe live buffalo. We were at the park for nearly 2 hours and didn't see any. There are some observation areas adjacent the visitor center which includes some mounted binoculars. The small buffalo museum has some interesting items, photos and artifacts, but not really much there. Large parking area which includes parking for large RV's and trailers. The adjacent "old west" town didn't have much to offer or see. Other than taking a photo of the worlds largest buffalo, and taking a short walk through the town, there is not much here.

Our family just had the most incredible time on a pasture tour with Ilana and Gabby. We have been to Yellowstone and Custer State Park which are famous for their bison. But this tour was something special. The passion for these great animals was evident by our guide’s wealth of information, enthusiasm, and her genuine interest in our experience. After a short drive (about 5 min) to a huge beautiful pasture, the bison came running to us. We got to toss treats to them and watch them interact with each other up close from the safety of the vehicle; (think African safari type vehicle). They even had baby bison in the herd. We watched them wallow in their dirt holes, and the babies nursing. Our guide Ilana even took a family picture of us with the bison in the background. We learned so much and can’t recommend this tour enough. It is a little pricey, about $50 per person but it is an experience you will never forget. It is worth every penny.
Great staff! Multiple floor museum - don't let the exterior fool you; well worth the stop. Full of interesting displays; WW2 memorabilia, antiques galore, coin operated model trains, dinosaur bones - including a full skeleton(!), player piano with a ton of great (and unexpected) music, & a wealth of local historical information.
Jed Brazier — Google review
It's an unbelievably great museum. The atmosphere was just perfect. When entering, someone was playing classic rock on the piano present.
There is this humongous train replica of the town of Valley City that is absolutely a must-see. The model T in the back of the museum was another jaw-dropping piece.
The collections of military outfits and memorabilia were quite interesting. It was inspiring to look through it all.
It was nice having free admission, but I'll be sure to donate next time so this wonderful museum can be maintained. The exhibits are fun and well put together. Everything is very well maintained and looked after. A lot of thought and care was put into this place.

Great local museum. The curator is very knowledgeable on local history.
J T — Google review
Had a great time here today. My kids loved the player piano! Has a little something for everyone.
M Manning — Google review
This is one of my favorite little gems of a smaller town museum. It's mostly staffed when I went by retirees that will talk about local history and other things of note around town. Last time I went it was free and for that price seeing the model train and cars was pretty well worth it!
Bear Oldcastle — Google review
This FREE museum is a must see. Fossils, cars, local and world history, and three floors. The history is PACKED into this place and the staff are very helpful and friendly. There are even a couple interactive exhibits including old crank phones and a pedal piano. Well worth the visit for anyone at any age.
Ian Shattuck — Google review
My family loves this museum, even my girls. It's a free will donation to go through it and the volunteers are so great at showing you around or showing you unique parts, letting you play the really cool automatic piano. There are 3 levels to go through and make sure to spend a bit of time here!
Melissa Brossart — Google review
Excellent! The staff assisted with locating an obituary in a La Crosse, WI newspaper for an ancestor who died in La Crosse but buried at Woodbine Cemetery in Valley City. They scanned the obituary and funeral notices and sent to the sexton at Woodbine who then sent to me via text message. My family and I are happy to have this information! The staff at Barnes County Historical Museum and the sexton at Woodbine provided excellent service! Highly recommended...and thank you!

Stopped here on a whim during the first day of our long trip. What a GREAT find! Very friendly volunteers who love to chat about the history and museum pieces. Proud heritage and fine examples of life in area. City was easy to navigate. Highly recommend a visit.
Tented here over a weekend this summer. Well maintained, nice tenting sites, good facilities and just the right amount of time outside of Fargo. Definitely recommend taking a short drive over to the Sheyenne National Forest and doing the waterfall hike along the North Country Trail, too!

Our stay in Fort Ransom was relaxing and the cabin we stayed in had a comfortable bed, table with two chairs, refrigerator, recliner, cupboard and counter! The heat and air conditioning was an added bonus! Shower house with flush toilets were about a minute away and the outhouse was very near to the cabin! We enjoyed a nice fire in the evening and used the clean picnic table for our meals!

Fantastic camping. Clean showers. All the walking and biking rails you could imagine. Playground was a hit with the kids. Shannon, the Park interpretor was also a joy. I can't say anything bad about fort Ransom. Truly one of the best parks in ND.

Such a nice park. I came out for a hike and ended up doing 11 miles. Decided to come back the next week and tent camp. It was quiet and peaceful. The trails are all pretty well maintained, but some are pretty beat up from horses. I really enjoyed the Pederson trail and also Little Twig. I plan on going back soon to kayak!

We stumbled upon this gem! A lot of culture to learn from this state park. Beautiful views & walking trails. The campground is spacious & clean. They even have a corral campground for horses and livestock which I think is very convenient. Wish the information center was open but we visited in the off season so it’s understandable.

Very nice place to stay and the trails are amazing. The old farm that is original on the park was nice to see. The veiws are just amaing at this park. They have 20.4 miles of trails that can be walked. In the winter they have skiing, cross country skiing, and a big hill to sled, snowboard and ski on with a ski lift to get back up the hill instead of walking. Over all a very very nice place. Id recommend to come here to stay in one of the old houses or yurts.

Fort Ramsom State Park is an absolute gem! We loved every aspect of our stay. The visitor center was clean and newly updated, they offered a wide variety of supplies incase you forget anything at home. We stayed in the cover wagon and the experience was fantastic. The wagon was bigger and better than what I expected. All the rangers and staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, our family really enjpyed a the events and tours. My daughter loved the park playground and we all enjoyed the endless well maintained trails to hike! We even checked out North Dakotas only waterfall. We had the most wonderful time! Thank you for sharing this beautiful park.
Great winery. An excellent stop on our road trip through the Dakota's. Friendly tasting room with excellent fruit wines. Thank you!

(March 2022) I always wanted to try dandelion wine because of the game Genshin Impact. I was skeptical that I had to pay $24.99 for Maple River’s bottle, but I wanted to try it anyway. I wish I had read the reviews before I finalized my purchase because the wine was awful. I did taste dandelion, but the overwhelming, rubber-like grassy scent and flavor made it hard to enjoy.
Celi R — Google review
I bought a bottle of dandelion wine and it both tasted and smelled exactly like burnt rubber. An absolute waste of $16.00. You are better off putting in the effort to make dandelion wine yourself (which is delicious; I recommend adding lemon & orange zest).
Mitchell Krueger — Google review
This needs to be removed from all travel books, maps and websites. It is no longer open. We drove an hour out of our way to check it out.
Dawn Borrow — Google review
Very disappointed. My boyfriend & I were driving through North Dakota on a road trip back to Oklahoma. We wanted to try a winery while in North Dakota and found Maple River was on our route. We detoured making sure we could make it with enough time to taste a little bit before they closed at 5:00 pm. We got to the gift store first at 4:30 pm. The sign said Open but a note on the door said "Go two doors down". We went two doors down to the Distillery/Winery but there was a note on that door that said "Be Back Shortly". We waited around for 30 minutes to see if anyone was coming back but they never showed up. I called the phone number but no one answered. If you are going to detour from your route to go by Maple River Winery I would definitely call to confirm they will be open since their hours don't appear to be set in stone.

When you visit Fargo-Moorhead, make sure to stop by the visitors center where you can see a replica woodchipper outside and the actual official woodchipper from the movie "Fargo" inside. The visitor's center also offers clean restrooms, free coffee, and plenty of brochures about local attractions. Fans of the movie or TV series will find it a must-see with autographs from the Coen Brothers.
North Dakota Welcome Center Walk of Fame
This is a great place to stop and stretch your legs and walk around and see the famous wood chipper from the movie Fargo or at least a replica. My understanding is the real one is located in the building building but was closed when we visited
N M — Google review
There is a replica woodchipper outside but inside the visitors center is the actual official woodchipper from the movie. You'll know it's legit because the one inside has autographs from the Coen Brothers who made the movie Fargo that starred William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi and Frances McDormand.
And once you've gotten those pictures out of the way, the visitor's center has a super clean restroom, free coffee and all the brochures about the area including the museums, the hotels and the attractions.

Definitely the highlight of Fargo was stopping at the visitors center here. We prepared the night before by watching the film Fargo. We spoke to Wynne here and she had a lot of knowledge.
Of course you have to take photos with the wood chippers :) they had some memorabilia from the movie as well.
You can pick up a booklet of where to find the painted Bison 🦬 around the city as well, they’re all painted very uniquely.

This is a beautiful visitors Center. There's not much shade to park in around the big parking lot near The visitor Center there's more shady areas
They have the famous wood shredder from the movie Fargo
It's a cute little miniature.
It also has electric car chargers and a dog area that almost always has bags.
The doggie bags or wait over in the corner of the parking lot right next to the back of Holiday. Another one of my favorites

Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great recommendations for my day trip.
The Red River Zoo, formerly a ranch, houses over 300 animals from similar climates including red pandas and meerkats. It is a small zoo with interactive play areas and farm animal attractions that are kid-friendly. Although visitors should not expect a large facility, the staff is pleasant and accommodating. However, some attractions may be closed during colder months.
Appreciating this zoo is all about proper expectations. It’s cute. Not big. Staff is very nice. Kid friendly with interactive play areas. My 10 and 7 year old loved the farm animals and attractions but I’m not sure a rural/local family would have the same experience. We did everything in about 90 minutes on a cold April day when nobody else was in the park. $40 for a family of four.
Josh Orendi — Google review
This was such a cute little zoo! Had it not been so cold, we would've spent more time there! We were very surprised to see lots of indoor viewing places that were nice and warm and had bathrooms! The animals were very interactive! A wolf came running towards us like a puppy and seemed to want our attention! For as small as it is, it's beautiful and charming, and I recommend this to anyone! Sometimes less is more; and I mean that you can spend so much more time enjoying the scenery and animals! Rare ones at that! We truly enjoyed this zoo more than was anticipated! If we ever end up in Fargo again, we'll be sure to come again! Thanks so much!

It's still cold so many attractions where closed. But this is a great little zoo we have been here several times. Red Panda was not out my daughter was disappointed, but lover the otters digging in the snow.

I love to visit zoos!! I liked this zoo. It's small. When we first walked in the immediate 2 enclosures were missing their animals. The fox's were asleep. Not a good start. Also I was excited to ride the carousel and it was closed for maintenance. What?? We walked into the building and there was just a girl sitting there like a bump on a log. NO workers working on the carousel! On a positive note I really enjoyed seeing the endangered animals and the work that the zoo is doing to protect them. Worth the visit? I guess yes.
Cynthia Liss — Google review
It was really hot the day we visited this zoo. However, they had areas that were well shaded. There were a couple of buildings that were airconditioned. The zoo was pretty well laid out. We paid extra to do the Red Panda experience. Totally worth it! They also have some animals that you don't see in all zoos. You can get through the zoo in about 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Enjoyed walking through this zoo.
Sue Jones — Google review
This is a fantastic zoo. It has an amazing variety of interesting animals I've not seen in much larger zoos. Their curation is phenomenal.
Lisa Gilmer — Google review
The Red River Zoo might not be the largest, but it is very well laid out and has a fun assortment of animals! They also have a petting zoo where you can feed alpaca, goats, and a cow (though she wasn’t feeling very sociable on the day we visited, lol)! They also do a LOT of conservation work that I never would have expected. Definitely a good way to spend an afternoon! I would recommend going in spring or fall, as during summer it’s very hot and most animals seemed content to sleep away the heat, but it was very fun nevertheless.

I had so much fun meeting all the animals at the Red River Zoo. I have never been so close to an otter and the friendliest of deer. The chameleon was so photogenic, it seemed to be smiling. Thank you so much to the staff and caretakers that make such a wonderful experience possible!

Great family zoo.
Small, easily walkable footprint.
Generally well maintained.
Knowledgeable staff.
Paper handouts didn’t list daily educational programs or “feeding” programs.
Several animal habitats didn’t match the paper handout - moved or missing altogether.
Wished the demonstration prairie garden out front and Asian interior garden plants were labeled.
Wished for shade - trees in the parking lot.

Beware of the Merry-go-round. It will ruin your visit.
Would love to praise and give a high rating, because for a zoo in a small city it is really nice.
However, the visit to merry-go-round at the end was not merry at all and ruined our day. The ride is sponsored by I assume is a local family and they either hate kids, or would be appalled with how something with their name on it is being ran.
After spending $3 a kid to ride (which is ridiculous on it's own) the little girl operating it stopped it right away and told us we had to get off because one of our kids was crying. Thou shall not cry on their very important ride apparently. Our other two kids were devastated, which naturally lead to them crying. It tainted what was a great family vacation.
For further context the crying child was actually not crying but screaming with glee because he loved it so much. Even if he was crying, that is no reason to kick a kid off a merry-go-round. Young kids cry... Always! Happy, sad, hurt, excited. They are always crying. Trust me. You can't stop life for a crying child.
Disney has the most strict standards for these kinds of things and they wouldn't stop the carousal for a screaming kid. (We have family that works there, we asked them and they laughed at how stupid the idea is).
Get over yourselves power tripping teenagers running the ride and just let parents parent our children. Believe me, if there was a problem I don't know any parents that wouldn't address it better than you can. I don't need you telling my kid he can't cry.
Brian Hirsche — Google review
It's a cute little zoo and pretty well maintained.
There's not a ton of diversity but it did advertise that it houses animals from similar climates so don't expect to see lions or polar bears. There are some unique animals like the Pallas Cats and the Takin. For the price I feel like we definitely got our money's worth. It was $50 for two adults and two children.
The discovery barn and farmyard animals are always a hit, the kids love feeding the goats and alpacas.
There's a couple different playgrounds to take breaks.
There was only one food vendor that we saw but had easy okay options like tacos in a bag, uncrustables, etc.
Almost everything is outside but there are a few different buildings to get out of the heat.
With two younger kids (5 & 4) I felt like this zoo was the perfect size, we were able to see everything and take our time in 2 hours with a break for food.
Heidi Cook (Heidilynnxx) — Google review
Cute and quaint zoo in Fargo. Price was reasonable and the indoor carousel was an added bonus (only $3/person to ride). Good variety of animals. It had rained the night before so the play area was wet and dirty but otherwise looked good for kids.

Super fun zoo! Had a great experience here. The keepers were so helpful and kind, they clearly love their animals so much. Love to see that in a zoo. Absolutely beautiful grounds, with a fantastic staff, couldn’t ask for anything more. Would definitely recommend bringing your family here. And I got to see my tattoo in person! So fun! 10/10
The Fargo Air Museum is a collection of vintage and modern aircraft, engines, and related exhibits housed in two hangars. The display boasts of a variety of aircraft ranging from crop dusters to training planes, including replicas of the Wright brothers' plane and WWII planes. While there is no specific theme, the museum is well-maintained with friendly staff. Though the full price may seem high for what's on offer, there are various reduced prices that make it more affordable.
We went for the Fargo AirSho and I was so happy with the experience. The staff was so friendly, the drink coolers were constantly stocked, the food for our chalet was really good too! The museum is also really nice inside. So many cool planes and exhibits. Highly recommend.

At first we were skeptical about this museum. It didn't look large enough. Then we learned there is another building full of planes and it made more sense :)
The museum covers local history a lot so it's important for locals.
We were thrilled to see Yuri Gagarin's picture and handwritten letter as well as items he had with him during his missions he gifted to his friend. There was a letter from another Russian cosmonaut in there. Overall we had a good experience there!

This is a rather unique museum. Overall I enjoyed it a lot. I had thought this would be an adventure of several hours. As it turned out, we pretty well seeing the place in about an hour and a half. They have some amazing aircraft as well as very interesting history. I could not get the phone based tour to work. In fact there were only a couple of interactive things that functioned the day I was there. Still, getting to see the aircraft up close is quite fun and informative. I would have liked to have seen the cockpit of many of the planes, but that was not possible and photos of such were not on display.
Myron Jackson — Google review
Nice place to visit. There are two hangars with about a dozen planes with no real theme. They have a Wright brothers replica. A couple of WWII planes. Crop dusters. Training planes. It's a hodgepodge collection, but the place is neat and the folks are friendly. The full price is a bit high for what there is to see, but the various reduced prices are more in line. Plan on one hour.

It’s not huge but it’s a really great aviation museum. Highly recommended. All the planes are in exceptional condition and they do a really nice job of keeping them up. They even have a really cool library on the second floor. If you were interested in aviation, then you got a stop on by.
James Christie — Google review
A smaller air museum with a handful of planes through they are well cared for and on display. There are some interesting aircraft for any aviation buff including an MQ-1 Predator drone, a 1981 L-39 Albatross trainer, a Cessna L-19 Bird Dog, a Grumman TBF Avenger (with folded wings!), and more. They are spread across two large hangars and I happened to catch a kids outing with several children under the care of one of the volunteers.
The museum also includes a large display of memorabilia and mementoes and newspaper cutouts of Fargo history and the service of those from the area. A small gift shop completes the museum.
Tip: Check the local sports schedule. When the Fargodome is in use, they're selling parking in the lot here. You'll be on the street a block or four away.

My experience was very good. It had a lot of great airplane exhibits. Many of them are accompanied with great photos and provide awesome historical context for where and when each airplane was used for. The free coffee and cookies are definitely a bonus as well.

I was only able to spend a very limited amount of time here but I am glad I stopped. There are several planes, memorabilia, and displays which are all interesting and notable. Definitely something worth visiting!
FARGODOME is an indoor stadium located at the North Dakota State University campus, which hosts a variety of events such as games, concerts featuring renowned artists like Elton John on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in 2022, monster truck rallies and theater performances. The venue offers easy access to nearby accommodation options and parking for visitors at affordable rates. The atmosphere during NDSU football games is electrifying and akin to attending both a rock concert and a football match simultaneously.
Best part is that I was able to stay in the hotel just past the parking lot. The weather was DISMAL but Shinedown on 4/6/22 was excellent! Was glad to be able to enter through the closest door because, like I said, it was dismal weather.
Great venue for the show.

Gotta love the dome. So glad they finally started serving beer. Great atmosphere that helps the bison win games. I have some great memories here and will continue to stop up and watch the bison win some for games. The dome is kept clean and I have never had a bad experience at the dome. 100% support anyone looking to head to a bison game and have a good time. Roller herd 🤘🏽

Disney On Ice was amazing and worth the fun. They really have changed the format over the years. The sound staff and piro really added a nice balance to the show. The skating and acrobats rounded out the skating and art/awe factor. Overall a wonderful show we would see again. Yeay Disney!!

Excellent place to watch a football game. The NDSU game day atmosphere is electric, parking is cheap $5.00. Restrooms are clean. It’s like going to a Rock concert and a Football game breaks out.

Had a blast at my first concert! Loved it although parking was horrible had to park blocks away as lot was full. And over charging for parking.tickets already cost so much and then have to pay for parking as well. Why don't they just included it in the ticket so that everyone can just park.

Best night ever here!! 3/19/22

Every review is the same, should have been at the other arena in town. Seating is terrible, sound system is aged, the staff is even worse, hired off the street.
Never been to a more drenched "stadium". Beer everywhere because no one here can hold it straight and they don't give you lids for ANY beverage.
Absolute. Malarkey.
Packed like sardines.
Something could definitely go wrong here.

Clean bathrooms, good food. Although, I would recommend bottled beverages not fountain. All of the soda fountain drinks had an off taste like something was dirty or not mixed correctly, and we have drinks from 2 different places.

Fargo Dome is a fantastic venue place for everything!!! From concerts to Disney on ice to hogh school and college wrestling. It"s located on the NDSU campus. It's located near the airport and Fargo Dome hosts a lot of fun stuff....if you ever get kidnapped and find yourself in Fargo some how....stop by Fargo Dome and see what all the fuss is about!!!

I recently attended an event at the Fargodome, and while the venue itself was impressive and well-maintained, I feel there are a couple of areas that could be improved. As a parent of an athlete who had to weigh in several days before his competition, I found the lack of healthier food options concerning. It would be beneficial if the Fargodome could offer more nutritious choices to accommodate athletes and their specific dietary needs during events.
Additionally, I was disappointed to encounter an issue with one of the staff members. Jason from administration was, unfortunately, quite rude during my interaction with him. As a visitor to the facility, I expect professionalism and respect from the staff, and this experience fell short of those expectations.
Overall, the Fargodome provides a spacious and well-equipped venue, but addressing the concerns related to healthier food options for athletes and improving staff courtesy would enhance the overall experience for visitors and event participants alike.

Scenic museum complex featuring a replica of a Norwegian viking ship & a wooden stave church.
I love this place. Very quick tour but there's so much material available for you to learn beforehand. Amazing photo opportunities. I am fascinated by the mindset with the Viking era converting to Christianity. There is an archway before you enter the stave that cleanses you before you can approach. The outside door entrance is the only way in and, depending on your height, pretty much forces you to bow on the way in. There's a small window for those suffering of leprecy to hear the sermons. The smell inside is just amazing. The wood was sourced from somewhere in Minnesota, I forget. Spend the $10 and go. It's really worth your time.

The Hjemkomst Center has several exhibits including the Viking ship, church, and Clay County exhibits. It also has various artworks displayed and an outdoor park area.
The museum gift shop includes lots of German, Norwegian, and Minnesota related souvenirs. We bought a beautiful handmade ornament!
The museum is very simple and small.

AA made an America Viking ship, duplicative of one found in Norway, launched in 1982 across the great legs and the Atlantic to Bergen and Oslo. It truly awesome site. Very well done, with great exhibits and explanations. Second a superb Stave church Also, a replica of one constructed in 1100 in Vik Norway. Third and outstanding historical museum of Clay County, touching on the original settlers, the Indian conflict, and current issues. Lastly, the clay county archives, which have a treasure trove of information. By far the best museum in Fargo Moorhead. Small fee, discounted for seniors. well worth it.

Interesting exhibits. The ship is cool, but my favorite exhibit is the Native American and Settler history exhibit downstairs. There is also the Stave church out back and a history of Ralph's bar which was not too Interesting unless you're a local or have been there. Nice trails along the river!
Ben Morrison — Google review
The Hjemkomst (homecoming, in Norwegian) started building with a crew guided by Robert Asp, a high school guidance counselor, in 1972. Asp died in 1980, and his family carried his legacy by completing this replica Viking ship in 1982. It said from Minnesota to Norway, where a massive welcoming party welcomed the crew. What a beautiful story.
The crew consisted of professional sailors from Norway, a truck driver, college students and four of Asp’s children.
The Hopperstad Stave Church replica was also incredible. This church is an exact replica of a church built in 1140 in the town of Vik, Norway.
This is why travel is important. Sure you can see this online, or you can visit it in person and awe in real life.
CH3F JAMES — Google review
Enjoyed reading and seeing all that is in the museum. The gentleman that told the small group about the church was very enjoyable and answered all the questions we asked. Thank you for the great informative time.
We went after 5:00 pm, when entrance was free.

A small museum, definitely worth an hour of your time. To see the church you will need to join the tour at the top of the hour. (It’s a quick overview and then you have time to take photos and ask questions.) The Viking ship and its story are pretty incredible. The local history exhibit downstairs is worth checking out too. A very cool little spot.

We loved visiting the Hjemkomst Center! Tuesday nights in the spring are free after 5:00pm, so we decided to go check the Viking Ship and Stave while in town. It's so absolutely worth it! The ship is massive and the history and displays are so interesting. We also did the tour that meets every hour in the hour to go inside the Stave. It was so amazingly intricate - completely breathtaking to think of it being handcarved! Totally worth the visit and the gift shop has a nice variety of wares and souvenirs.

The Viking ship and Stave Church were awesome to see and learn about. They had good local history exhibits as well.
Glenda Landsteiner — Google review
Tuesday the museum the open until 8p and the admission was free. It's a Blue Star museum during the summer months. Otherwise, it's $10 per adult. The guided tour for the Stave Church didn't offer any more information than what was offered in the interpretive panels, but I don't think you can go inside without a guide.
Erin Brown — Google review
Highly recommend stopping here for a quiet little look around. It's neat to read about the story behind the Hjemkomst and take in the massive scale of it (stand beside the oar and you'll know what I mean). There's a nice mix of video, visual, and textural components in this exhibit. You can feel some of the items that were used in the ships creation. There are stairs you can go up to get an aerial view of the ship's deck, but unfortunately no wheelchair access to that portion of it that I could see.
The stave church tour was fairly detailed as well and it was neat to check out the inside of it. There's soooo much detail in the carvings and even in the shingles which took four cuts a piece! There were also two other exhibits downstairs that were included with admission. All in all a decent place to spend an hour or two.
Ryan Kern — Google review
My husband and I visited the Hjemkomst Center in August, and had an amazing time. Being from the Southwest, we weren’t very familiar with the history or heritage of the northern Midwest, much less the greater heritage of Viking and Norse history.
The highlight for us was the church tour with Kevin. He was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of insight into the history and context of the church and time period it is from. We were lucky enough to be the only two on the tour, so we were able to ask a lot of questions and have really good conversation about history in general.
We highly, highly, highly recommend a visit here!

We stayed one night on our way through the area. We had a great end site which was spacious - Site 16E. Still, it was a little tricky getting our 36' fifth wheel in with low tree branches overhead. Nice little campground, well maintained, but a bit pricy for just electric. Water and dump are available on the way in/out. Campground was quiet, but you could hear train and traffic noise in the distance.
Susan Schwaderer — Google review
Peaceful campground in a beautiful setting. The sites are generous in size. Several hiking trails from the campground. The pleasant sound of a train can be heard in the distance. The staff at check-in was pleasant and knowledgeable of the sites in the area. The roads leading to the campground are well maintained and easily allow for trucks and trailers or large rigs to navigate.

Beautiful state park. I wish they would bring back the man made pool though. Lots of nice trails, great scenery, and very nice people at the park. My family and I were there to celebrate a birthday. It was perfect fall weather. I would recommend anyone a visit to Buffalo River state park.

A beautiful little prairie of a state park. If you're looking to complete the whole set, add this park to your "prairie park" list.
It may not be the largest state park or have miles and miles of trails, but the quality far exceeds the quantity. This is a wonderful oasis of protected prairie lands and it pays dividends in the plethora of trees, grasses, plants, wildflowers, insects, and birds that thrive here.
Chuck in the Buffalo River that meanders thru the park as a bonus for all you river aficionados out there and it's hard to beat or pass by without stopping.
Todd Mulvihill — Google review
Come to this small park for the beautiful clear river which can only be described as babbling and meandering. On a hot day toes will definitely want to paddle. Other hiking trails pass through the prairie.

What a cool park! We visited in mid-September after the leaves had started changing colors. The prairie and Buffalo River are gorgeous. We did the hiking club trail, which was an easy hike. The trail was mowed grass or dirt the whole way and pretty flat.
This park has a couple of historic buildings that are worth checking out. It's also connected to a Scientific and Natural Area.

It's an interesting place, but just a few small fences and corner guard towers and one small building, but they did not restore much else. Good plaques around the site showing where the buildings were and explaining the history. There is not much to see here, except the museum. But it's a must visit for anyone who is interested in the 1862 conflict.

We decided to make a quick detour to check out Fort Abercombie, it was well worth the visit! It is free to visit and do the self guided tour. However, please take the time to do the paid guided tour, it was interesting, informative, and our tour guide kept all ages in our group entertained. Well worth the price for adults and children. It was far more than just a few wooden buildings on grassland. The knowlege of all staff was amazing, and they were able to explain things in a relatable way. They even had the children visiting the hisorical site interacting and playing pioneer games that were played during the fort times. The site has been beautifully maintained and the grounds were nice to explore. This ended up being more than a quick trip as there was more to do and learn than we had thought!

From seeing the minimal amount to see when I was a child to what they have done to it in recent years, this has become one of the most fun places to walk around and learn about history. The interpretive center is seasonal, closed in winter months. The rest is open year round. The grass is mowed to show where buildings used to be that are no longer there. I didn't get photos of everything as it started to rain while I was there. Lots of uniques for Ingress and Pogo players.

We love the Chahinkapa Zoo! I take my daycare crew there a few times in the summer months and I always feel impressed by the ample amount of trees for shading. Even on days the line is longer, it takes little to no time to get in, we pack our lunchboxes and eat just outside of the zoo before we go in as there are picnic benches near by. It's always a highlight of our week and the kiddos talk about it for a long time! We prefer it over any surrounding area zoos as there are more animals and lots of greenery. They even have a cute sandbox filled with fun things to do if you need to take a little break. We also go every year for Tal the orangutans birthday party and that's always exciting as they let us decorate his cage and we watch him open gifts and snack on peanut butter! ☺️👍🏼

Beautiful zoo with lots of animals. Lush landscape, lovely, shaded walking paths throughout. You're able to get close to all the animals, which is great for young kid viewing. There's a sandbox under a nice shade tree with benches nearby for a quick rest. The turtle enclosure allows for your little one to ditch the stroller and safely stretch their legs. My husband was there for 3 nights and 4 days working in the area. He ended up getting bedbug bites.. several. First thought it was mosquitoes but got several more bites the next night…nonstop itching. Called the manager a few times and finally got a call back. How rare to see 2 Snow Leopards?!? the others were so fun!!! A Great place top visit and we will be back soon!!!

Great little zoo for all, but particularly the kids.
My grandkids loved the activities even more than the animals. Milking the "cow", driving the stationary truck and tractors and playing with the "welcome to touch" exhibits.

Bramble Park Zoo is an excellent zoo to enjoy lots of animals, local history, and a beautiful landscape. Visitors are welcomed by a small museum that focuses on the area's past.
Inside the zoo, they have a nice variety of animals (e.g. big cats, bear, primates, bison, kangaroo, sloth, etc.). They also have many playareas for kids to get out some extra energy and picnic areas. Not as exciting, they have plenty of shaded seating for the adults.
Pro tip: Take a photo of the map in the gift shop. They no longer provide paper copies.

If you're expecting a big-city zoo, you'll be disappointed. However, when you take into consideration the size of the local community (and the climate here in the winter) then Bramble Park can be considered above average! The parrots were fun and I saw a playful fight between a Kangaroo and an Ostrich. I felt sorry for the Tiger who didn't stop pacing the same area in his pen the whole time I was there- seemed exhausted and stressed. Make sure to check out the indoor history exhibit which gives some more background on northeast South Dakota if you're not from the area. Place was set up for families with a petting zoo but didn't get to experience that on my own.

Very well taken care of zoo, and animals seem well cared for as well. There was a lot to see as well as multiple play areas for kids to stop at and a cute little petting zoo area.
Concessions were okay - our main concern was food dyes which was in 90% of their options, but I'm sure most people wouldn't have an issue with that so I'm not marking it down for it. Just noting for others 😊

A great zoo for such a small town! Definitely worth bringing the kids too!

It was very enjoyable, well laid out, and super fun for kids! They can run and see all the interesting zoo residence. There is a fun park with activities for them to play in, and they can get close to animals they otherwise may never get to. The young girl at the gift center was very kind and polite, and the talking cockatoo was hilarious!

I enjoyed this zoo very much! I saw animals I hadn't ever seen before. I was able to get closer to the animals than in some other zoos. I do wish the big cats had a little more room though. Staff working at the zoo were friendly. Restrooms were clean. We were able to walk the entire zoo in about 1.5 hours.
Sue Jones — Google review
I love the zoo, I really do; but I believe something needs to change. I know they have the mist sprinklers, and that's awesome! But I think a few thing's should change. They should bring back the mining activity. They should definitely have more in the shops, and they should definitely change the animals exhibits. Nothing has changed exhibit wise, as far as improvements should be.
I get they love the animals, and take care of them, but everything is super old and needs to be changed. Welfare should be above and beyond in zoos, and this just doesn't cut it. The animals pace, and lay around, because there's not much else to do. The snapping turtle has little to no room to move, as do most animals, but that one is really sad.
I have loved this zoo for almost two decades, and I know funds are low. I feel like more items in the shops/etc would help that. I've already bought plaques for my family for the zoo, and I hope there's more options, more varieties to gain income to help fix this zoo.
It's still beautiful, still great, but still needs a change starting with more room for the animals.

It's a nice a cute little zoo. Had a great and relaxing time walking around to see the animals.

We took our 4 year old grandson and 10 year old granddaughter. We not only enjoyed seeing the animals but they had fun hauling wood in the wheel barrows and playing in the different play areas. There's a lot to see and do!

The zoo always looks clean when I visit. The staff seems friendly. They have a decent amount of animals for a fairly small town. In rating this a 4-star based on the size and the expectations although you could almost give it a 5-star for that. The reason I didn't give it a 5 is because it's not a zoo you go out of your way for. It is a great place to burn a few hours while in town.

I visited the Redlin Art Center when I drove to Watertown. I was greeted cheerfully and warmly with my numerous questions. The gift shop is a super stop for anyone looking for gifts and nice selections of locally made chocolates and other indulgences including wine! I brought a typewriter into the lobby with permission and was treated to a tour of the area where offices are held. There’s so much to see and enjoy at this fabulous jewel of eastern South Dakota. I greatly encourage a visit, walk all floors and see the displays, get a close look at the many thoughtful touches put into this amazing collection of artwork. There are works for sale, cards, prints, interesting perspectives and well-lit paintings everywhere. There’s benches to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere while you wait for a loved one to take in the art. Terry Redlin is a treasure to our country, and his prolific talent is not to be missed!

There are informative videos to watch, and a short film too. It's neat to hear the back story to some of his work.

A nice small park and campground right on the lake! My wife and I had a great time camping here. Only bad part was annoying neighbor campers, but not something the park has to do with!
The park ranger here was extremely friendly and helped out right away if we needed something.

I really enjoyed my visit to this park. It's small but it has trails with beautiful prairie views. You can see tons of wildflowers at the right time of year.
I had noticed that in some previous reviews they had mentioned a horrible smell, this is not the case anymore.
For those of you that collect pins, patches and/or stickers the main office was fully stocked on all sorts of fun goodies and pamphlets that you could use for the Park and the surrounding area.
I definitely plan on going again before the summer is out!

We are trying to do all the state parks and this one fell a little short. Only because there wasn't much hiking for us to do. They only have like two trails and it's in the open field. They are pretty and the camper grounds look very clean. But for us the trails are important.

Kinda basic for a MN state park. Not much for trails or amenities. It feels like it is forgotten or neglected in the park system. Has a decent day use area and campground along the lake. It has boat access and some decent views and vistas in otherwise bland area of the state. If you want to stay on Big Stone lake go across to the other side. Hartford Beach park on the SD side looks to be a way better option for this lake.
Wyatt W. Penke — Google review
Ok stay. Geared towards fishing. $23 a night for non-electric. Electric sites available too. Nice sites with views of the lake are non-electric. Flush toilets and showers available.

Campsite was beautiful, right on the lake. But the lake smelled like sewage and was bright green. The swimming beach was covered with seaweed and algae. Despite my best judgment my kids and I tried swimming and it was gross - smelly and the water felt. . . thick. There were very few trails and nowhere to bike so we got bored without swimming. as an option. We did enjoy a lovely sunset and stargazing later, which is the only reason this park garnered a 2nd star.
Marie Tierney — Google review
All we did was drive through to look at it for possible future camping. Restrooms were very clean and good condition. They're in easy walking distance to all campsites.. We did notice that some people had dogs and were on a leash.. We didn't notice much for a picnic area at the campgrounds.. All the campsites looked like they were quite close together so each one didn't have much room for themselves.. Some sites were just a matter of feet from the lake so it looked like you could possibly fish from shore at your own site.. The four stars is because of each lot size.. I like a bit more room.

I enjoy going to Wooden Legs when in town, especially on Tuesday nights for trivia. Delicious cracker crusts with some unique flavors and great beers with a selection of both house and others on draft. Here I had the Smoked Little Peach Shoes (fruited wheat) with the Jacked Up Pizza. Both outstanding, though the pizza wasn't as spicy as I expected, which was easily fixed with some red pepper.

Overnight camping at city campground as we are passing through from Black Hills. Friendly local brewery. They were quite busy on this Sunday night. Super friendly and polite. Enjoyed a couple different kinds of beer. Wife and I each had a pizza, the Supreme and the Cuban. Enjoyed both pizzas. Hit the spot. They have a large collection of growlers. I happen to have an empty from my local brewery and we swapped to add to their collection. Went home with a growler of Farmhouse Ale. Very tasty Ale. Definitely would stop again. Thank you!

Short version:
Don’t go here if you value customer service.
Long version:
I’ve always loved Wooden Leg’s beer, trivia nights, board games, and original pizza flavors but was recently super disappointed. As a server/bartender, I always give the benefit of the doubt to service workers but feel this experience calls for my first review, at the risk of sounding like a “Karen”. I stopped 1.5 hours before closing time, ordered a pizza to go and a beer while I waited and read. I was the third customer upon arrival—so they weren’t busy—and quickly became the only customer. The customer service was non-existent (often the norm here, but the food/beer usually excuses it) as they weren’t friendly when ordering, grabbed my glass without asking if I wanted another drink (or anything else, such as my pizza), and resumed closing duties. After about 1.25 hours compounded with a fear of confrontation and the kitchen lights being shut off, I asked the bartender about my pizza. She said they never got the order (although I was charged and saw the cook preparing a pizza), couldn’t give me a refund, and couldn’t get ahold of a manager. She took my info and said someone would “hopefully” contact me. After two days and no word, I emailed and did immediately get a call that they processed the return yesterday along with the reward points I used, but again no reason for the mishap. As a local, repeat customer, I’m disappointed they didn’t go above and beyond with even a coupon or couple extra reward points, which would be the bare minimum where I’ve worked. If you’re able to get your food here, it’s totally worth the trouble; on principle, I’ll try to stay away. If anything, this review appeases the time wasted in a hangry state that Wooden Legs couldn’t with a coupon or explanation.

Would highly recommend the pizza to any non gluten sensitive person. So good! Unfortunately can't recommend it to any person with gluten issues. Seems like they don't take a lot of effort to keep regular flour off the pizza when they make it. I would love to be proven wrong on this.

First time there this afternoon, ordering was a bit awkward, but the food was really good. Got the Italian hoagie, bread was very nice but the onions and peppers could have been sautéed a bit more as they were still raw. It added a nice crunch tho. Got a flight with 2 beers and 2 ciders and really enjoyed it. It was 22 dollars for a flight and the big sandwich with chips, which is not bad at all!

The beer is masterfully crafted, consistent between batches, and truly unique to the brew master(s) design. The patina of the store is very welcoming, and the food is designed and prepared with excellent consideration for the beer they produce. I consider Wooden Legs Brewing Company and absolute must for anyone who wants to truly experience what Brookings has to offer.

Nonprofit museum for children in a 1936 school with indoor & outdoor activities & hands-on exhibits.
This is the best children's museum we've been to! There are a lot of unique stations that have interesting options for play. We don't live here but we make sure to stop in each time we are in Brookings.
But if we did live here, we might be sad that the permanent stations haven't changed in several years. As occasional visitors, this doesn't bother us at all.

Since the weather was not cooperating and my daughter has a membership, the grandkids and I spent almost 4 hours at the museum. What a great place for kids of all ages! I had a one year old and a 7 year old and there were even young teenagers there enjoying themselves. I can't wait to go back and explore outside and take even more time. If you haven't been there yet, grab your kids and go!

The museum itself if a wonderful place! The kids adore it and have such a great time! The only reason I am not leaving a 5 star is because of the cafe. This was our first experience at the cafe and it had pretty good reviews so we wanted to try it. I am not sure if this was an off day or they were training people, but it took almost 2 hours to get our food. The kids got a cheese quesadilla and a salad with only lettuce, ranch and egg. My boyfriend and both got chicken Alfredo. My boyfriend’s was very very cold and mine was slightly warm. I took his back and they put it in the microwave and his was slightly warm. After eating, my boyfriend and I both got very very sick and we believe it is from the food. I will return to the museum itself because I, and the kids love it but not the cafe!

We have been bringing grandchildren here for years, starting about age 1, the exhibits and activities are wonderful, truly wonderful, for YOUNG children; but there isn't much to interest middle-schoolers and teens. I recommend this destination for children under the age of ten.
We were there today with preschool-aged children, after 4 hours they still had not been in half the rooms/exhibits, and had a wonderful time. But twice now I have seen pre-teens in there and they have trouble entertaining themselves there.

Wonderfully created for kids! One unique feature that this museum has is the working phones between businesses. Kids can call each other, in addition to the post office that has letters and packages that can be delivered to each business. Kids can actually take part in a world that was designed for them. Farm to grocery production, veterinary, mechanics, TV broadcasting and a diner. Easy to spend 1/2 to full day here with inside and out activities. Price is very reasonable and a food area is on site. Well done South Dakota!

I would rate this place a 10+ if I could. Its 1.5hr drive with my big family. But the amount of fun the children are able to have there, and their parents to join with them is priceless! There is so many things to do. You definitely need a whole day there! It's a museum but also they get to do activities in every category area! Grocery shopping with real size items (boxes for example, they are empty) .. all produce products are really realistic! Painting, café shop, fixing cars, science related, post mail office, dinosaurs outside! And they can even go splash in the small pond outside! So many things to do, it's to much to list. Staff is extremely friendly. There is also a cafeteria inside the building when you get hungry. Or there is close by near fast food areas or restaurants near by. Yearly membership is also available which is a plus.

Sprawling South Dakota State University gardens & arboretum with a variety of plants & activities.
This is a great place to visit! Plan to spend some time in the garden. It is well worth the admission price. Also check out the adjacent arboretum. It's free. You can see things such as a straw bale house in addition to all of the plants and flowers. It's a very nice leisurely price for a stroll. There is plenty of seating throughout the garden if you want to take some time to reflect or just need to take a break from walking. I am always looking for fun roadside attractions when making my annual trip from Austin to South Dakota, and we finally made it to Porter Sculpture Park this time! It's $10 for adults and free for kids. There are attendants on-site as well. I was impressed—there were way more sculptures than I expected, and they were bigger than they appear in photos. I'd recommend spending 15-20 minutes walking through at a minimum.

Well worth the stop! The creativity and size of some of these pieces is truly breathtaking. If you are fortunate enough to meet the artist you'll be able to ask him about his creations and hear stories about his process and methods. If you struggle with mobility or walking on uneven surfaces, golf carts are available so that you can enjoy each piece up close. You'll definitely come away with lots of great photos!

Perhaps one of the greatest roadside stops on the highways of America! Not only is it a glimpse into the brilliant mind of the creator, it is a fun way to spend the afternoon!
The $10 admission was well worth it to us, some of the things we've paid way more to see can't come close to what we saw along the path in the grassy plains of South Dakota! The massive steel sculptures and creations capture your imagination and take you on a journey. Some are downright creepy, some are extremely bizarre, some are weirdly interesting and some are breathtaking! Many of the poetry boards that compliment the sculptures will leave you scratching your head and a few will leave you with a smile on your face!
The photo opportunities are endless and the grassy path through the sculptures is a nice nature walk. Pets are welcome to come along, our little one had a ball climbing on the colorful creations, he thought they were there for him!
A definite must stop on the Highway 90 in South Dakota, I mean, what else is there to do?!

A perfect spot to enjoy odd creativity. The art is well maintained, as it's outside. Some are large and others small. All are accompanied by poems or explanations. The artist is there for conversation.

Wayne Porter is an amazing artist. It was cool to chat with him about his art. I think between my husband and I we talked his ear off but he seemed like he enjoyed the conversation. Very polite and in all was a great experience. I can’t wait to see more art in the coming years if he gets more done. I told him he needs to add more and we got details on a new piece he’s doing so can’t wait to see it. This is a spot that doesn’t take a lot of time to go through and it’s a nice path to walk on so it’s a stop you must take if going through this area.

Porter Sculpture Park is an easy and fantastic stop on a road trip.
It’s just off the beaten path with east access from I-90. Take the dirt road through a farm, passing by some photo-worthy cows, until you reach a gravel parking area.
We were fortunate to meet the sculptor and learn a little more about him and his art before exploring the park.
In addition to the unique, quirky, and impressive sculptures throughout the park there are short poems / stories posted along the way.
TIP: don’t miss the board in the parking area. We liked that one the most!
We found it well worth the price of admission (and would never expect anyone to provide something like this to the public at their own expense) for a fun and quirky road side stop.

Stopped by this place along the HWY to ✅ it out! Met the artist and found the place to be absolutely amazing!!! Who knew in the middle of nowhere such a place existed! As you can see the sculpture has real artistic talent and we were blessed to have discovered it by random chance on the way to Mitchell, SD!!

Easily spotted from Interstate 90, you will find an eclectic collection of sculptures and poetry created by Wayne Porter. This sculpture garden is well worth the trip and the cost of entry. Wayne was on site when we visited and was very friendly and engaging. Here is an opportunity to support a local artist. While walking through the field, be sure to stop and read the poetry. Some of it explains a piece, some are just a peak into a creative mind. The garden is also a Harvest host site so you weary travelers can stop by for a night and also enjoy the art. Entry is on $10/person.

I enjoyed this stop very much, as did Ava. So much thought and creativity shown in these sculptures and writings. Wayne was so kind and interesting to speak with too. I appreciated being able to bring my dog along as well.

This is a very interesting place to visit. Wayne Porter is a very talented man! Not only is there amazing art to see there is equally amazing poetry! Wayne is usually there to answer any questions you may have. They also have golfcarts for those who cannot walk the grounds. Plenty of parking even for RV. If you are on the area definitely check this place out!

super awesome!!! went with my dad based off a recommendation from a friend. we were busy hauling our own sculptures to DC and i’m so glad we stopped here!! wayne was super nice and let us in for free because we had our own art with us. the sculptures and poems were awesome and i felt like i could connect to them. my favorite was definitely the bull and the red robed guys!! so stunning and awesome. though i will say, if you’re not ready for darker themes, maybe not the place for you LOL !! overall loved it. would definitely visit again. 🫶

Great place to visit with family, friends or alone. Wayne has created very unique sculptures. You cannot miss seeing the big Bull's head from I-90! His last addition to the Park is the horse which took 10 yrs to finish and then has great stories of its long journey to his Sculpture Park! I stop every time I'm in South Dakota!

We stopped in early for some joy before a hard 850 mile/day. What a treat! The artist was on site and prepared us for the Eastern Kingbird nesting in the blue dragon. What a lovely stop. Thank you for sharing your visions 💙

We loved staying here! Very unique and beautiful artwork by Wayne who is also the Harvest Host for this location. Very kind man and it was a nice and peaceful overnight stop just off I90. If you are staying with Harvest host I highly recommend, if you are just traveling through I highly recommend stopping and checking out his amazing sculptures and poems, be sure to give Bambino a pet while you're there.
Down-to-earth casino hotel featuring an indoor pool, entertainment & 2 eateries.
Visited here on New Year's Eve. Great buffet, tons of slot machines, awesome live music. Waiter at the restaurant was super friendly and attentive. Didn't stay in a room, but the hotel appeared nice. Great time!

Okay... So the hotel staff is nice. My bed is hard as a rock... Even that isn't the end of the world. What kinda did it in for me was the shower. The shower tub had a crack in it that the staff just glued shut. The drain plug doesn't drain and the water came back up... Hairy and clogged. It was gross.

Always enjoy coming to this casino, great selection of slots to choose from, we went on a Sunday night so not busy at all. Love that they have drink stations to get yourself a soda or coffee, even iced coffee through the casino floor. We did not stay in the hotel this time so unable to give that a rating or my opinion. Would choose this casino over Grand falls anyday!

The rooms are very comfortable and nice. However, there was something wrong with the shower, barely any water came out. The sinks were really funky too, the water was kind of spraying everywhere. I went down to the pool and the water was extremely cold. It was like ice cold water from Alaska. The spa was great though; the hot tub. The food was delicious, we usually order out from here. Do something about your pool, I couldn’t even get in it; extremely cold.

Front desk evening lady rude on Feb 4th and not helpful, didn't seem interested in guest care at all. Pool and hot tub is down. Sunday buffet was not work $16 at all! And biggest advertisement was ice cream LOL and the machine is broken, just ridiculous... other than that the rooms are nice and housekeeping does a very good job.

One bartender for the whole place, not very polite. Check in was amazing, very fast. Room was decent. The buffet was good. Did not have my salad dressing, 😐 the brisket was good, not enough items for the price. Did not win, or even come close. Maybe got into a feature 2x for every 3rd game. Betting in the middle and maybe received 100.00 on the very first initial feature and that was it. Betting high with my Husband and got the feature maybe 4 times. 120.00 win but already had 600.00 in...not a very good place to win.

The restaurant was ridiculous!! We got seated and told our waitress would be right with us, 25 minutes passed and nobody came to even ask what we wanted to drink. There was plenty of workers there and they all looked at us and didn't bother to come over. There was 4 girls that were doing absolutely nothing but standing there talking. The restaurant was very dirty, there was plenty for the workers to do but helping customers should be #1

The restaurant we visited was truly amazing. The store was also very nice. The employees all over, particularly Jessica, the supervisor of the Gift Shop were exceptionally professional & kind. Jessica's hard work, knowledge, & professionalism were outstanding. Her customer service was exceptional, too.

Unless your used to retirement home food I would stay away from the brunch buffet. I don't think I have seen less appealing food...dry eggs, dry old tater tots, no drip pan in the bacon so it was super greasy...I really could go on...if your looking to find someone who knows how to actually run your food and beverage department give me a shout....after all this, these are not the reasons for the poor review....As stated above we had the buffet and made it through one time...going back up to grab the few edible things on the line(the egg pan had been empty for atleast ten minutes at this point) there was a lady literally eating out of the food with her hands and then disregarding the tongs and scoops going back in to grab her serving if things tasted good...I was blown away by this lady's actions and immediately reported to multiple servers...I was told they were keeping an eye on it...but what concerned me the most is that there was zero effort to switch out the food...I waited 10 min to see if it happened...nothing...we promptly paid and left without an offer of a discounted meal seeing we didn't get to even enjoy your half hearted tainted buffet. All that said I understand you can't control people but to simply disregard health and safety standards you guys should be shut down immediately.

Most casinos are pretty similar, nothing really sets them apart other than their employees. This place has the best employee ever her name is angel. She is an absolute rock star at what she does. Every time I talked to her I'm treated like family.

Went for the steak dinner special and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and taste of the food. The portions were appropriate for the price. I'm not sure how to rate the service because there was NONE. I had to get our own drinks and when we were ready to leave, I had to go to the cashier and get my receipt and to-go box because we never saw a server from the time we got our food until we were leaving.

We go out to Royal River frequently and always have a good time. The rooms are decently priced, the food is good, and we've done well playing the slots. The only real complaints I have are that it can be hard at times to find an open spot at a table, and there isn't much for options to eat after 10 pm. If you do get a spot at a table, you will find the dealers to be friendly and helpful. Remember to gamble responsibly, and if you're drinking, please don't drink and drive. Good luck to all who go out there.

Not too bad of drive out of sioux falls, usually go to Grand Falls but quite liked my time at Royal River. Small casino but not too packed. Bartenders were friendly. however players club was a hassle. Waited in Line 15 minutes waiting for the woman at the counter to get done flirting with all the male customers, even my husband had to awkwardly end the conversation. seems she doesn’t like the females too well. as she glared at me when i tried to hop in conversation as well. Cold and short with my friend, too bad we weren’t men. Angel could use an etiquette course

The Casio has a great location and overall a good experience. Check in was very confusing our front desk person said we have to wait until 4:00 pm. Our relatives who came after us were allowed to checkin at 2:00 pm. The Buffet had gone down in the last year. Our room had a pair of dirty socks on the floor from a prior guest.

Been to this casino about four times on my travel route back home. Completely the worst casino ever for gambling. I’ve lost every single time no matter what machine or what I bet. I suggest if you come here to have fun, save your money and be happy you still have your money. Go to Walmart and have some fun spending your money on things you can keep. Figure if you come here four times, and never win once that says a lot.
Pipestone National Monument is a site of great significance to numerous Native American tribes. It features quarries where pipestone, a sacred material for these communities, is mined. The park also boasts a visitor center and two pleasant walking trails that lead visitors to picturesque waterfalls and quartz walls. At the center, local Native Americans demonstrate their craft of pipe carving and turtle carving, as well as the use of seeds and flowers for medicinal teas.
Very enjoyable National Monument with some rock formations and a beautiful waterfall. The main trail is pretty easy for the most part and it is really only the side trails that get slightly more challenging. Lots of information in the visitor center and the park rangers are friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

This place was totally free to hike the trail and also to go inside and watch native carving and a very well put together museum. There’s quite a bit of parking, with restroom and some stuff for sale inside. It’s a circular trail with a couple off shoots that lead to fascinating things like old mines, rocks with old engravings, and even waterfalls! I enjoyed my adventure and will definitely go back with my kids sometime.. great job to the designers, architects, natives, and all the people that have contributed to the stellar setup! Thank you!

Pipestone is a magical and sacred place. The generosity of the indigenous tribes to have their sacred site open to the public is a gift of love. The visitors center is beautifully curated with big opportunities for learning and growth by all generations. The trail through the quarries is an easy walk with very clearly marked signs guiding visitors to take in the beauty. This site is fully accessible to all abilities. My children had a great time, learned so much, and appreciated the opportunity to speak with the pipe makers and artisans.
A note to white skinned visitors: stay on the trails, do not presume to wander into the quarry sites and touch peoples equipment or the stones, and pick up your dog's poop and dispose of it. Would you do any of these activities when visiting a church? Respect and courtesy go a long way. You are visitor on sacred land. Behave that way.

Very fun and informative. A small hike is available to old stone face and the falls. Don't worry. A majority of the hike is paved. There is a small gift shop at the monument. But, the best part is that there's native art makers there to talk to and show you the wonderful pieces they make.

This was so much more than I anticipated due to the very kind folks explaining and performing their craft of carving and shaping the Pipestone. There were also very informative stations, a great short film and beautiful (paved) trails winding through the area. A great experience that I would recommend to anyone.

Take the guided tour of the quarry area to better understand the pipestone rock / pipe making story, as our guide Park Ranger Natalie rocked it, otherwise you may not understand what you are seeing. Visitor Center had a good mix of displays, artisans, movie, and other items. Favorite was the loop walk through the natural rock outcroppings and waterfall. My daughter had fun earning her Park Ranger Junior badge through all the activities in the booklet you pickup from the desk. Make sure to stop by the three maidens.

Great little stop. 2 nice walking trails (shorter) (maybe 45m or 1mile) to a fun waterfall and quartz walls. The visitors center was also small but very nice … loved the local Native Americans who were there demonstrating or talking about their craft / trade of pipe carving, turtle carving and use of seeds and flowers for teas (medicine man). Was also fun they had a local zoo showing some local animals visiting … appreciate the extra effort by park to create a nice experience and education for guests

Unexpectedly a fantastic place to visit. The walking trails were great, and the visitors center had a lot to offer, including a gift shop and demonstrations. It is clear that this is a sacred site, and it was an honor to be able to visit. The hours are not quite what maps says but it gives time to walk the trails before opening.

I enjoyed hiking here; as many have said and as the pictures here make evident, it's a pretty place. I've put 4/5 however for two reasons. First is that I don't recall there being bathrooms; they might have been located on the side with the campground opposite, but I didn't camp. Secondly is moreso personal, as even seeing the bridge, I faced it anyway despite my fear of heights. It may have been my mind, but why is it jiggly grating? A sign mentioned erosion though, so perhaps they don't want to damage the area making something more formidable. It has to be a strong bridge with all it's use, I'm just... Be wary if you have a fear of heights.

This was one of the best experiences I have ever had at a state park! The employees were super helpful when we tried (and failed) to find the water area to swim in. The rock formations from the river were absolutely astounding and incredibly beautiful. We had so much fun and will definitely be returning again! There were so many hiking trails you could follow that made it still hiking, but also safe enough for just everyone to walk through. There were some tall structures you were able to "rock climb" to the top of and the view was amazing. I have shared multiple pictures of the magnificent landscape!

Just a beautiful park. There is camping, looks like electric hookups only, no water or sewage but attractive sites. There are not long trails but the trails there are pretty with good views of the water and the rock cliffs and Palisades. We have never camped there but would do so. There was a play area for kids and they seemed to be enjoying it.
Phae Drus — Google review
Palisades is open all year round. As you would expect, facilities and camp sites are shut down to pit toilets and a handful of campsites. Water is also shut down. The pads are asphalt and long. No problem getting the longest RV into these sites with room for that tow vehicle. I like the sound of trains; this is a great campgrounds to hear horns and listen to those diesel engines power up. While there (later part of March), we saw deer roaming throughout the park. FULL DISCLOSURE: There are mountain lions in the area; no one has been bothered by them, though. We talked with a couple that lived ½ mile from the campgrounds, and they showed us a picture they took that morning of a paw print. They had placed a dollar bill under the paw print, and the print was as large as the bill. They have walking trails and swimming locations (Rock Creek). They also have shear rock formations where climbers practice technical maneuvers and repelling. They have an exceptionally large day area use location with huge playgrounds and covered picnic areas. They also have a balcony area on one picnic shelter that over looks the creek , swimming hole, and rock climbing area. The town of Garretson is roughly a couple of miles away where you can resupply if necessary. I messed up my reservation (I picked a tent camping location instead of a camper location), and a park employee (John) bent over backward to help us out. He even opened a closed site to accommodate us. WOW, THANK YOU, JOHN!

This park has a smaller quiet campground with some nice trails. Shower house is in excellent condition and kept very clean. Vault toilets are also well maintained. A skylight in the roof would have been appreciated, bring a flashlight when you need to go.
All but 3 sites look great. I got one of the three. Sites 26, 27, 28 should be listed as tent only, or as a road side parking spot. Grassy area was sloped beyond reasonable leveling. Even the pavement was sloped both front to back AND left to right. Our site #28 was the worst. Only level shade was between the camper and tow vehicle. We brought the picnic table up to the camper were some items would roll away from us.
No camp store but easy drive to Devils Gulch, groceries, and Sioux Falls.

I called and reserved a campsite using the online number offered by their website. It was fast and simple. I wanted a cabin but was thrilled with a campsite where I had a nice little fire from the wood I bought at the entrance. 12$ for a good 4 hr fire. Sites were fairly private and it was quiet and serene. They had free hot showers and flush toilets! Everything and everywhere was clean and kept up. I was impressed and for 36$(campsite)+ 8$(car pass). I will go back more often! Famous story of Jesse James and the leap at Devils Gulch… great family place and easy to get to! Great job to the curators and employees..

GORGEOUS trails for hiking with your dog(s)! We, of course, were out here in late fall, so we had the park COMPLETELY to ourselves! It has beautiful rocky trails if you have the ability to climb, and mountain goat dogs, but it also has a mowed grassy path all around the campground if you want an easier trail, and a completely paved, one-way road all around the site that you can also walk if you would want to, since it's a 10 mph speed limit. You basically have no reason to stay in your RV if you camp here! Plus, there's at least one, SUPER GREAT playground for the kiddos! (I have to admit, my "child" is 21, so I wasn't paying much attention, but this one was so awesome it was hard to miss!)

This is a beautiful state park and well worth the $8 admission, regardless if you're staying over night or simply taking a short afternoon stroll on one of the three trails. When I visited it wasn't over crowded, but I also went in the middle of the week on a day that was 100 degrees. And despite these often crowd limiting factors, I still encountered plenty of people. I must admit, the people were not on the trail. They were in the water, at the camp sights, and on the bridge. However, I was never out of earshot of people talking, kids playing, and campsite noise. Nice but not quiet. Pretty but also pretty small. Worth a visit, but I would not go on a weekend or higher traffic time.
The facilities seemed well taken care of.
