Great place, lots of history. Awesome restored steam engine with a working whistle that you can blow! Kids and wife loved blowing the whistle and ringing the bell on the train.

This place is awesome. The train in the back was much loved my my small children. Best stop along the road trip by far.
We love this place! Very friendly and the park is clean. Great place to swim. We will always come back.

Awesome place for peace & quiet. Well maintained and staff very informative and helpful. Loved all the deer and peacocks roaming the park. They have a spring fed swimming pond which looked awesome, but a bit cold now for swimming.
Mark Plowman — Google review
Very quiet, except when the guineas get loud, and that's not a negative; I like that there's lots of wildlife: deer, peacocks, guineas. The deer are fed every morning at 8am

This is a slice of heaven. I've knocked some stars off because we went on family Day (Wednesday) and I could swear that in family day you paid by car, not by person. Also I went to the source of the water and it's so clear and beautiful, white sand at the bottom. It made me wonder why the water a few feet down was so green you couldn't see a foot below the surface?
Either way, it's a natural spring that feels amazing in a heat wave, that was built by the government and I wonder why it's in private hands. It should be open to the public given the group that built it. Privatization of the natural resources God gave humanity. God love us!
Absolutely no pets allowed because they poop but the dear poop and that's alright. Maybe I'm just crazy but hypocrisy just is rampant.

A blessed place to be.
Safe, beautiful, kind people, quiet, enjoyable..

I had an amazing time at their spring! The water was cold and the sun was hot, it made for an excellent experience. They had deer that were not afraid of people, seemingly unbothered grazing around us. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend!

We stayed for memorial day afternoon and it was really nice. The ladies at the gate were friendly and quick to get everyone in and give the information needed. The gentlemen on the golf carts on the grounds were very friendly and knowledgeable. The grounds were clean. Even though it was a Holiday and there were quite a few people there it was still pleasantly comfortable. I also appreciated them having back up law enforcement present to keep the peace even though there was no problems. After all its better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them.

The place is beautiful. The water is good and cold. The caretakers are strict about the rules. We observed several men on golf carts riding around managing the grounds, which did include speaking aggressively to patrons, mostly over parking💀 as long as you don't mind following the rules, it is a good place.

It was amazing here! The water was blue and so cold but extremely refreshing on a hot Texas summer day! Definitely worth the $10 entry fee for the swimming hole! Well worth the drive and I drove 3 hours 1 way just to go enjoy the day here. Its nice to get away grom the city and go to the country and see all types of wild life and be only feet away from Deer's! Very very relaxing and rejuvenating!

Odell and Frances are the nicest folks managing Camp Tonkawa RVPark and Campground. We were caught in the great Covid19 Virus Pandemic with nowhere to go after Texas State Parks closed their overnight camping (even for self-contained RVers). We had stayed one night at this park in 2019, loved it and came back for a month’s stay to social distance and wait out the lockdown. The park is a former Boy Scout camp, has uniques features such as the flock of Guineas and Peacocks. Also a herd of twenty five or so unusual deer. We really enjoyed our stay despite wild East Texas weather. Torrents of rain, hail, tornado warnings, power outages and some flooding of our original site. I think we had the hundred year storm! Odell helped us clean up our screen house and got us moved to higher ground. Who knew East Texas would be such a drama queen?
All in all, we really did enjoy our stay and would (and will) happily return to this really nice campground.

This is a little spring fed swimming hole. The water is cold, but it's fun. It has several rope swings hanging from trees. Bring your own food snacks and drinks, there are no places to buy food etc. Entrance is $10 cash only.
The Blueberry Place recently opened to the public for berry picking, attracting families to this new location. It offers a pleasant environment for outdoor activities, allowing visitors to enjoy nature while gathering fresh blueberries. The facility provides the necessary equipment such as harnesses, buckets, and bags for a convenient picking experience. Picking over 11 pounds of delicious blueberries has left many looking forward to consuming or preserving them through various methods like freezing or baking.
It's a great place for being outside enjoying nature and picking a wonderful fruit and spending time with family.....the owner is wonderful to talk with and super sweet!!! It's a great time every time we go.

What is there not to love about The Bluberry Place? Going there has been a family tradition for over fourteen years and it wouldn't be summer for us without at least one trip! Besides the luscious blueberries, the landscaping is a feast for the eyes, whether you're a gardener or not. This place is a gift to our community and beyond -- today I visited with some ladies who were from Hawkins!

Had such a great time last year, going back next week,so much fun and didn't care it was hot!

This was the first weekend they were open to the public for picking and this is the first time our family has visited this location. It was wonderful!! We brought our 6 and 4 year old boys and they had a great time too!
We picked over 11 lbs of blueberries this morning (June 2022) and they’re delicious!! 🫐 This location provides harnesses, buckets, and bags for you to use while you’re picking ❤️❤️
At $1.50/pound we’ll be eating, freeze drying, and baking blueberries for the next couple of weeks!! 🫐

This place is so neat! Took the tribe of children from age 17 to 3 and they loved it! They furnished the harness and buckets with bags for easy weighing. We gathered several pounds of blueberries. Just be sure you pick them ripe because they taste much better. Great experience!

Very nice. Price is great. They have seating & table. Could make a picnic. Beautiful/calming garden. Watched hummingbirds (at least 3) interact, dragon fly and several bee species, when I was done and waiting for several friends. I will be back!

It is a well kept, quiet place for young and old to pick berries! Very accommodating hours too. Ty for having us!
Marcia Jantz — Google review
Had a great time picking blueberries the several times that I have visited. It is all honor's system and an inexpensive way to get fresh blueberries and have fun!
There is a port-a-potty restroom available, but no indoors. So go on a cool morning, or bring a hat, sunscreen, and water. It is well worth a visit.
It is a beautiful park and a great getaway. There aren't many amenities, but that also means it's not as crowded as other places. You pay at an unmanned paystation at the entrance after first driving in and selecting your site. The restrooms were a plus, and within easy walking distance of the single camp sites. I'm not sure if there is a restroom near the group sites. There is currently construction blocking a few foot bridges connecting Loop A with the brook and lake area, which kind of sucked, but we just drove over there instead. I'm looking forward to going back once all the construction is done. The hiking trail is awesome too!
The website doesn't have pics of the sites, so I'll post one here. Tent pad, fire pit, bbq pit, picnic table, and food/trash hook. Drinking water spickots are strategically placed at convenient spots. No firewood or anything for sale. You either arrive with what you need, or you forage. The closest corner store for ice is about 10 minutes away, so not too bad. However, the store is on the edge of a dry County, so you'll need to go north another 15 minutes to buy beer.
Stargazerlizzy — Google review
Beautiful little park. Just what I campground should be if you are looking for primitive camping yet nice facilities and trails that are good for all ages. Do take caution that a couple of the wooden bridges are in need of repairs or are missing all together on the sawmill trail. Still very navigable.

It's a beautiful park with a $5 day use fee. We stopped in for just about 10 minutes and took a very short walk. Before we returned to our vehicle they had already put an envelope on the windshield requesting payment. I can understand if you are there for a picnic or whatever but 10 minutes?

Beautiful little place in the National Forest. Self pay when you enter, camping is $10 a night or $5 for day use. Nice natural springs and rock to explore and swim in or you can go out to the little lake. Showers and bathrooms. It's beautiful out here and one of our favorite places.
Nicole Reese — Google review
I came here yesterday for my first time camping, and had a great time. The spring and lake are gorgeous, and the campsites are nice. It sits in Angelina National Forest, which is so beautiful and calming. There is a camp host who drives around and checks to make sure everyone is OK, which made me feel more comfortable.
I do wish they had more hiking trails. There is just one sawmill hike, which isn't marked the best. For only 10$ I think it's a great place to camp. Day entrance is free if you don't want to camp. There are bathrooms that were clean (a little run down, but its the forest, so just happy to have a bathroom). There is also a Dollar General and few Gas Stations about 9 minutes away in case you forget anything.
The little waterfall and bridges are gorgeous. Highly recommend.

For Southeast Texas this is about as pretty as it gets and we've tried a lot of places. We enjoyed the different types of scenery and the trails the spring and the lake along with the Sandy Beach along the creek that feeds the lake. Can't wait to come back in the summer

This is a beautiful off the beaten path area. There is now a campground host on duty and a $5 day use fee. There is a lake for swimming, a spring, picnic tables, restrooms and a covered pavillion with a fireplace. There is also tent camping allowed but Im not sure about the price.

Area is very well developed. Campsites designated in safe areas, grills & bathrooms. White sand beach area in the middle of the woods formed by the clear running spring water and local creeks. Clean rec. site, original cemetery, safe trails and parking. Could visit with young kids or elders.

This is a nice campground. $10 a day for camping five dollars a day if you have the pass for the national Forests. Bathroom and showers, hiking and fishing, my dog loves the place. The camp host is awesome. I found this place last year when I was down here for the winter.

Love coming here with my family. Peaceful place to bring the kiddos and hike the trail and go fishing or swim.
Kenna Tidwell — Google review
Mostly flat trail, but with a few steep inclines, intermittently that could cause some strain to stiff ankles and bad knees. 4 older, but stable small wooden bridges and one sketchy “balance beam” type crossing. Takes about 2 1/2 miles to get out to the old sawmill, but if you’re not looking to do a 5 mile round-trip hike, there is a nice 1&1/2 foot waterfall next to the trail, about a half mile from the start of the trail, which would be a nice goal spot for tiny hikers and young kids. Bring more water than you think you need, and we suggest sunscreen, because it is mildly shaded. The trail is poorly marked at the very beginning. When you leave the parking lot and cross the bridge, go to the left at about 10 o’clock towards the bush line, and you should see a break in the bushes, with a sign for the Sawmill Trail. It leads you across some concrete cobblestones in a creek, and then to the right directly through the middle of a campground with tent-pads. It feels sort of weird walking between people who have their tents set up, their picnic tables laid out, their trucks parked there, but if you keep walking across their campsite, you should eventually start to see a tiny one-person-wide trail. That’s it, no sign, and it’s a while down that trip before you start to see markers nailed to the trees. Keep going until you hit the road crossing and see the trail start sign, and have a good time! There are distance markers about every 3/4 of a mile. When you get to the dead end at about 2&1/4 mile, and the trail splits to the right and left, go to the right, that gets you to the sawmill quicker. Back behind the three main buildings, there is also a section with 20 small pillars/pylons that are fun to climb.
Blaine Byrum — Google review
Great spring along trail to stop and relax, have lunch and let kids play.
The Google maps pin showed the RV park (I am trying to get it fixed, hopefully). The visitor center should be the first one you see on the right after you turn to S Broadway St from Hwy 21. The pretty neat museum is there and you can get a trail map as a guide for the walking trail. There's a swale (old cart track), but it was covered by bushes so I didn't take any photos. You can follow the spray painted arrows once you cross the road following the trail map.

Mission Delores, located in East Texas, was part of the Spanish Mission system. The mission is no longer there but they have artifacts from the mission in the museum.
If you enjoy learning the history of Spanish Texas, add this sight to your list.

A unique historic site with a great story and super friendly and helpful staff! The exhibits are well thought out and offer something for the entire family. Mission Dolores is well worth a visit if you haven't been and worth another one if it's been a minute since your last visit!
Scott McMahon — Google review
I visited Mission Nuestra Senora De Los Dolores De Los Ais in San Augustine. My ancestors visited this mission and likely married into the local Indian Tribes. The ecclesiastical records of Mission Delores have been lost to time. But we know the Ais Indians were free spirited and resisted conversion to Christianity. Thus the purpose of the mission, to bring Christianity to the Indians was a failure in the eyes of the Spanish Crown.
One interesting archaeological find is that 80% of the European pottery found at the site is French, indicating illicit trade with the French at Fort St. Jean Baptiste in Natchitoches. This fits with the long history of illegal smuggling of goods, cattle, and even slaves across the Texas-Louisiana Border along the El Camino Real.
Mission Dolores was a Spanish mission built in 1721 in what is now San Augustine County, just 20 miles west of the Texas-Louisiana border. The site tells an important history about the Native American experience with Texas’ earliest European settlers. Today, there are no historic above-ground remains of the mission. The mission site has been confirmed by archeological investigations and historical records. Mission Dolores is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated State Antiquities Landmark. El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail also passes through the property. Visitors can explore the site’s history at the museum where interpretive displays tell the story of Mission Dolores. The property also has a campground, picnic area, frisbee golf course, and group pavilions.

RV park review
We had a wonderful time here the park was well maintained and you can clearly see the effort to keep the park running.
We were a little concerned with the housing authority next door just not know what to expect, but it was pretty quiet and no issues.
There was distant car noises but a lot quieter than some RV parks we've stayed at and I had some wonderful good nights sleep.
The hookups all worked as it should and we enjoyed the picnic table and grill.
Making the reservation was a little difficult as I called and no answer. I did send an email and got a response right away.
I want to leave instructions for those coming here and you're from out of town and not familiar with the park. When we arrived our GPS took us to the park office/museum. We quickly found ourselves in a bit of a mess as we are a 33ft 5th wheel but glad that we were able to get ourselves out.
The RV park is across the street from the museum there's the housing authority entrance which is houses or townhouse and right next to that is the park entrance. We were able to get help at the office and check in.
After a long drive and wanting to arrive we were a little frustrated with the process and not knowing where to go.
I know Mission Delores just went through a renovation and maybe they can implement a better reservation system online and provide some better directions to those arriving.
Also put a sign for no RV's to enter the museum.
Once you figure it all out it's very easy.
We truly enjoyed our stay the park is well maintained and we enjoyed walking around and learning. We stayed 4 days but wished we had the time for more. Our pup loved it here she spent all her time wanting to be outside and when she was inside she spent her time looking at the window.
Thank you

This was the closest to mother nature I could get without being on private property. Pretty chill walk.l, really relaxing.
We stayed 2 nights at their Lodge Hotel. Nice clean comfortable rooms. Beautiful property with a golf course, pool, and restaurant. The restaurant was really spacious with a pool table and a large bar in the middle. The food and desserts were delicious for both our lunch and our dinners! (We would have eaten breakfast too however they only serve breakfast at this time on Weekends). They had outdoor seating that overlooked the golf course and had nice heaters for cold nights. The staff was really hustling and you could tell that they really enjoyed working there. The locals must eat there because it was packed every night. Supposedly bans play on the weekend. The property is expanding and is about to open an additional restaurant called Sammy Rays and also a coffee shop. A beautiful place that we will be back to enjoy again!

My review is to inform others of wanting to stay here at the lodge.
The lodge was pretty, the ladies at the front counter did a wonderful job making the special request sent via my fiance was fulfilled.
Unfortunately, we ended up not staying here because of misleading information on the website that we verified many times were correct before booking. We were met with understaning at the front desk when we asked to cancel/refund our reservation and were charged only a night.
I urge whoever is over the website to update and include that amenities listed (kayak, canoe, horseback riding) that are offered here are not yet available.
The only things that are all-inclusive about the resort are the pool, golf course, pickleball, and tennis courts.
Just want to save anyone else confusion. Would love to come back when said amenities become available.

They are making some great updates to the property so I’m looking forward to when it’s all finished. Restaurant Review Only.
Very few people(customers) sparsely scattered around when we arrived. Seated but sat for several minutes before anyone noticed we were there, same waitress across the room chatting. Tried putting in our Starter order to be asked if we knew what we wanted so she could "put it all in at once" um well No.. no we are not ready to order. After putting in the order we did enjoy the appetizer, fried ravioli- definitely nothing homemade but was tasty. Ordered a Ribeye and he got Surf & Turf.. with all the sides and a salad. Salad was great. Steak was ok. Sides were really really bad.. we both left our sides on the plate, so salty it burned my tongue (usually you can't salt stuff enough for me).. the Shrimp on his were supposed to be grilled- they were blackened- he doesn't eat blackened season so the Shrimp were left. We basically paid 150$ to eat 2 steaks and 2 house salads. Was really hoping it was better than last time because the Stump is about all we got to go hv a good steak & shrimp.. but we will keep going to the Stump- 3rd times a charm. 3rd time this Summer we paid to much money for pretty much nothing.

My husband tried to talk me out of staying here this weekend because last time he was here the A/C didn’t work well and the room was hot. We have a lot of memories with this resort including our wedding & more so I felt like it was a one off… but we booked this weekend and even though the ac shows 61 degrees it is at least 80
In this room. Sad because I want to keep giving our business but if the rooms are not comfortable ESPECIALLY with the increase in pricing that will not mean we will come back. Hope they resolve the problem.

Those in the area, or passing through, with any interests in space and science should check this museum out. This museum is dedicated in most part to the recovery efforts of the Columbia orbiter (and to its history of missions, starting IIRC from STS-1) as the area around Hemp Hill is where several portions came to rest and where much federal manpower was focused. The museum is not large, but for its mission is probably the right size. Definitely well worth a stop. The staff were very warm and welcomed questions.
Robert Lybarger — Google review
Great experience at the museum. Our tour guide, Belinda, gave us an amazing first hand account of what the history of Columbia was and also everything the town of Hemphill went through to get the crew home where they belonged. This museum is a stepping stone to what they hope will be a bigger and more proper memorial to this great ship and crew, so please consider a donation to help them in that effort. Also, please know that the website that the google maps listing has linked isn't correct. A google search will show the proper website further down the results.
Park on a reservoir with swimming, fishing & boating plus 900 acres for camping, picnics & hiking.
Evacuated at last minute to get away from Barry... decided to give North Toledo Bend State Park a try. This was our first time there. Very clean, showers and bath houses and also the camp sites. The staff was very pleasant to talk to. The walking trail to the pier was a nice little walk. There are cabins to rent as well as a group house that would make for PERFECT family reunions or meeting places. Was nice that there are washer and dryers for use for the campers. We didn't go into the pool but it was staffed with two lifeguards and it was big enough for many people to be in it at the same time. There is also a kiddy pool and storage cubbies to put your belongings. It was nice to know they offer outdoor church service on Sundays. We will be back with our kayaks and bicycles and fishing gear!

For those who are wondering about the upstairs in the cabins:
There is no bathroom upstairs. There is no closet upstairs. There are two twin beds with mattresses that felt like sleeping on logs. The master bedroom has an equally firm mattress. Surprisingly, the most comfortable sleep was on the pull out bed in the sofa. The pillows were also not comfortable. The white comforters were clean and surprisingly warm. The stairs are very dimly lit coming up, but pitch black going down.
The downstairs did not have a dishwasher and the review mentioning the highly scratched nonstick skillet was accurate. The wifi was down during our stay, but the cell phone service was 1-2 bars the whole stay. The steps going to the cabin door are very tall.
Beautiful cabin in a beautiful setting. Gorgeous views!

As of mid February 2023, the following are not disclosed ahead of time online before booking cabins:
- Wifi is unavailable in all cabins.
- Drinking water is hazardous due to a disinfectant byproduct.
- One of two hiking trails are closed.
- Ice is unavailable at the front office.
- Playground and picnic area is closed due to maintenance.
- A $40/pet fee is required on entry paid by credit card only even when specifically booking a pet friendly cabin over the phone.
- Towels are provided for 2 days worth and must be traded out at the front office for new ones
- You are expected to sweep, mop, and take out trash before checking out
This is by far the nicest state park cabin we've stayed at as they have been renovated recently and their maintenance crew is phenomenal. The grounds are exceptionally well maintained and I don't think I saw one piece of trash on the ground the entire time.
That said, there are some annoyances to be aware of. If you bring a boat, you'll be required to unhitch it every night as you're only allowed 2 parking spots per cabin. One for your trailer and one for your truck.
Coffee machines are provided but filters are not. Salt, pepper, sugar, and paper towels are also not provided unlike other parks we've stayed at.
The aluminum pots provided no longer have flat bottoms so they are quite unstable to cook on the glass top stove. The large nonstick skillet was scratched like crazy and should not be in use anymore while the small skillet looked perfect.
I will say, the electric stove is the fastest stove I've ever cooked on. It got water up to a boil very fast. The outdoor grill is not great. There isn't a way to open air vents underneath so there's no way to get your coals ripping hot for searing thinks like steak. I just wouldn't plan on using them unless you bring a grate you can pour the coals on to get proper airflow.
The utensils are adequate but the knives are as sharp as butter knives. We were smart and brought our own chefs knife.
The largest bed is a full sized mattress which is about impossible for 2 people to sleep on. We brought an air mattress and slept in the living area instead as we are much too tall for such tiny beds.
Speaking of being tall...the shower head is installed at a laughably low height. I think it would be too short even for someone 5'5". Taking a bath is not much of an option either as the tub only allows a few inches of water because the overflow drain is installed so low too. Miserable all around.
The ceiling fan in the living area can not be turned off.

A very nice and well maintained Louisiana state park!My family and I were able to hike the shorter trail, Dogwood Nature Trail 1.5m Loop, quite easily. The debris from the previous year's storms were tended to and we enjoyed this trail a lot! Afterward we went to the pool which is well maintained with very nice bathrooms attached. We're looking forward to going back to the beach area and to when the other longer trail opens up, hiking it too!

Fishing, trail walking, grilling. Watching the sun set over the lake.

FABULOUS place to visit!!! Campsites are all perfect with all of the typical amenities: water, tent pad, fire ring, electric etc. Bathrooms and shower areas are clean and very well maintained. Fishing pier and boat ramps are in great shape. Park staff and camp hosts are very friendly and helpful as well! Just too much good to list it all - we are totally going to come here again though!

This park is very beautiful. We were here for 4 days with rain every day, unfortunately. We were able to hike a really nice 1.5 mile nature trail, however it was very wet, but not impassable. There is a laundry here, which we did not use but looked clean. The bathhouse in the campground was clean although there were bugs on the floors and in the sinks. Hey, this is Louisiana, there are bugs everywhere. It appeared they were cleared every day, then more came overnight. There is a very large pool and hot tub here, too. It does not open until May 29, so we did not use it, however it was full and clean, ready to open. Our site was right next to the lake and the views were awesome. We had almost no contact with staff, so I cannot comment other than to say no news is good news.

Beautiful sunrise and sets, pink and purple painted skies. The lake is stunning, calm, huge. Beautiful tall trees, the stars were lit up. Clean showers and in general park. Has piers, fish cleaning stations. Everyone was very friendly. Sandy helped us a lot over the phone before even arriving. Able to rent a canoe or flat-bottom boat was a nice bonus. Fishing we caught 2 turtles and 2 baby cats. Lord bring tarp! Daddy long legs and spiders were everywhere. Didn't take away from the experience at all. They go away during the day. Food, ice, fish bait were all 10 to 20 minutes away.

Immaculately well maintained park. Friendly staff. We stayed in cabin 3 with our two small children. It was spacious. It had two twin beds in the loft, a pull out sofa bed, and a small double bed in the bedroom. Bed is a little tight for two average size adults, so the second night I slept upstairs in the loft, my husband took the room, and the kids slept on the sofa bed. Soap is provided in the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and shower. There is a coffee pot, filters, a toaster, microwave, oven, basic utensils and cookware, cups/plates, and stovetop in the kitchen with a full sized fridge. The cabin was very clean. We were very pleased and will be back! The playground was under construction.
We’ve been wanting to charter a sacalait trip for years and were finally able to. Living the Dream was recommended to us and we couldn’t be more pleased with the whole experience!!! Brandon was all around awesome and “Hammer” was the sweetest, hardworking deck hand!!! Their kindness towards all of our kids was definitely noticed and appreciated. The entire operation is top notch, clean facilities and friendly staff. Great trip, we WILL be coming back!!

My husband and I have been on different guide trips across the U.S. And to limited out on a catch is not easy. Our fishing date was 5/16/24 and it has been raining a lot, so we were concerned we would not hit our limit.
Damon Borel was our guide, and we told him we were concern about the fish not biting. And he told us if we would listen to him and do what he said we would catch fish.
when he showed us the equipment he had and that he worked hard to take care of his beds, we new its was going to be exciting. And it was Fish on. The crappie did not have a chance, we agitated them with the minnow's, every witch way they turned. He keep the us right were we need to be. we have never had so much fun catching fish.
Thank you Damon you made it Exciting and real, we see you again next year.
And what really made us happy We came for 50 fish and we caught 50 fish in 4 1/2 hrs. thats Fish On

Best fishing charter service I have ever experienced. Our guide genuinely wanted us to have the best fishing trip possible. He was prepared and extremely knowledgeable about the lake. Was also very patient with anyone in our group who was not an experienced fisherman. Our guide was great. I wholeheartedly recommend this charter service and we'll definitely be back

I don’t know how to express how thankful we were for choosing Living the Dream Guide Service. We are first time visitors to Toledo Bend and expected the fishing to be challenging. A year of drought and timber on the lake seemed intimidating. Brandon O’Neill made those factors unimportant. His knowledge of the lake and conditions was excellent. His patience with my shortcomings (cancer survivor trying to get back into the swing of things) his quick switch from different rigs led us to enjoyment of the experience. We have used guides before in salt and fresh water and he is as good as any. Recommended without question!

Fished for crappie with Captain Michael Shanley on December 14 with my son and his girlfriend. Captain Michael exceeded our expectations! His knowledge of the lake and use of electronics made our experience one that we will not forget anytime soon! Captain Michael made sure that everyone on the boat was in the correct position to catch fish! We ended up with a box full of better than average crappie, I've been on a lot of trips prior to this one and can't expect to repeat the quality of this trip on future trips but I can guarantee that Captain Michael will give it his best shot! Looking forward to booking our next trip with LTD and Captain Michael! All around top class operation!

We bought this fishing trip from a silent auction for St. Joseph Elementary and High School in Plaucheville, La. It was amazing. Our guide JT was super friendly and cracked jokes with our kiddos the entire fishing trip. The boat and facility were clean and well maintained. We could not have asked for a better experience and enjoyed our time with LTD guide services. We can’t wait to return.

Mrs Gail and JT have a first class operation. Don’t waist your time messing around with low budget guides. LTD set us up with Cooper and he put us on the fish. The following day we rented one of the pontoon boat’s and cruised the lake. Nothing but great memories with the family.

LTD is the best! We have been fishing with JT and Dustin every year the last few years for our company retreat and it’s always a great experience! JT treats the ladies’ boat like Queens and makes sure we’re having fun and catching lots of fish! Dustin and our guys have become friends over the years and they have a great time! The new marina is so nice! We will come back year after year and recommend them to everyone!

Michael Shanley put us on some slabs yesterday despite the tough bite. Thanks also to Cooper for everything he did. We’ve already booked next year and look forward to coming back.
Made the drive up from Lafayette for a day trip. Completely worth it. Spent several hours here. The grounds are great, trail is well maintained, museum is great too! There is also a video to teach you about it.
Nick the interpretative Ranger on shift was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. He gave us a guided tour of the museum and even did a musket demonstration for our kids. This visit well exceeded my expectations and I plan to come back.

Wonder little museum! New to the area and was pleasantly surprised by this place. A small area that is rich in history of the civil war. They have a short walking trail (lacking large markers due to weather wear and tear but they are working on it). There are numbered markers which you’ll follow with a cool informational card. The card tells you what happens at each marker. Very relaxing trail and well kept up. Friendly staff and very helpful! There is a fee for entrance (which helps fund the property). It should be about $4 (cash or card). They do offer military discounts as well. Wonderful little slice of history and a nice trail to engage in and decompress! If it’s rained recently, consider bringing shoes you can get dirty but you should be alright!

Some of our relatives fought at this 1864 battle ground. The short film was informative but they reported that this film is the only copy. I hope they preserve it digitally before it ages beyond repair. The museum was full of artifacts, photos and information. Affordable for a family and worth the visit.

A very nice place to stop and learn about the battle of Mansfield. Really enjoy the 1 mile walking trail with the different stop that told about the battle. Just wish they would invest some time in taking care of the monuments were you can read them.

Off the beaten trail but worth a stop especially if you're a history buff. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Small but impressive museum that presents the battle in excellent detail. There's a pleasant walking trail that covers the battlefield, with markers describing what occurred.

Botanical gardens, wildlife & a 225-acre lake are highlights in a state park that also hosts events.
Gorgeous park!!! Spent a couple of hours viewing with my family and it was great. Sadly, Louisiana is considering cutting funding for state parks and Hodges Garden will close without it. Please consider donating and fighting against the cuts so that we can keep our parks for tourism!!!

I hope that this park will find the funds to reopen. It's such a beautiful and serene Park. I especially enjoyed the herb garden . I stayed in a spacious one-bedroom cabin close to the lake shore. The cabin had a fully equipped kitchen. It was especially nice to have a flock of geese visit me every morning and every evening before their bedtime.

After looking at the pics and other info about Hodges Garden, I wish that I would've had the chance to visit it. It looks very serene and peaceful, the lake is very beautiful too. I'm sure that it had some good fishing but I could just get in a kayak or tube and just float around the lake enjoying the peace of being on the water. I would have loved to have visited the waterfall, I spent a summer in North Carolina and that's where I fell in love with waterfalls and their beauty. Very disappointed that it was a victim of budget cuts.
Geoffrey Rogers — Google review
Walking around the gardens you can see the past beauty of this, kinda like walking through an abandoned utopia, it's pretty neat. The areas that are kept up look amazing! But with limited staff and it's funding being cut they have had to abandon quite a few projects but that doesn't deter from the beauty of this place. Once upon a time this would have been a gorgeous place and it still is beautiful today
Mel (Official Moose Brand) — Google review
I LOVE this park for many reasons! Since it's located away from any major city, you can see lots of stars on a clear night. It's peaceful and quiet. The park rents out canoes and kayaks so you can enjoy being on the lake that's located in the center of the park. They have cabins, tent camping sites, and a primitive campsite (my favorite!) that's on an old airstrip. The gardens are BEAUTIFUL, especially in Spring when all the flowers are blooming. It's a great place to get away for a day or for multiple days. If you need to go to the store, there is a Dollar General within 10 minutes from the park in Hornbeck. If you haven't been here before, you should check it out and see for yourself! :)

I would have thought that the state would have done more to fix the place up.There was not as many flowers as I remembered and Flag Island was completely closed. Also the geyser in the middle of the lake wasn't working anymore. Its still very scenic, but the overall condition has been better. The entrance road is weathered and bumpy. My first trip here was 1966 and I've been back many times.Sadly, I won't be back.

I was at the gardens back in 1981 as a child. At the time it was still run by the Hodges family/foundation. I just brought my husband and daughter July 5-7th, they love!
It is different now. The financial restraints of a state government run program are obvious but it is reassuring to see different features have been adopted by groups, organizations and companies. We saw two different features being worked on while there. Great work being done.
Flag Island is closed do to unsafe conditions. That was very sad. I loved that feature when I was a kid. But until they can find someone willing to finance the repair and cleanup, there isn't any going up there.
It was a great trip, beautiful gardens and the cabins are wonderful! The hard work being done by the limited staff and volunteers is terrific! Everyone we came in contact with were extremely friendly and helpful. Stop by and see the wonderful Kim in the gift shop and she can tell you all about the history of the gardens.

One of the best experiences I’ve had. I drive over the road so I miss a lot of opportunities to see some things off the beaten path. I had looked at Gator Country and saw that the parking lot might fit a semi and if not I had a turnaround at end of road worst case. Well they allowed me and Leo (part owner) told me to park along the edge at the exit while I enjoyed the park. The animals are amazing to watch, hold and feed but it is truly the staff that stands out. You can watch them work and see they enjoy what they do. They are personable, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. Just a pure joy to experience this wonderful place. I’ll be back many times and will be telling all my friends. Thx Leo and all the staff !!

Excellent place to visit. They were so attentive to my family and I. We received the VIP service I feel like. If you want gators you will see plenty here. It's the winter season so no gator feedings but we got to hold various reptiles and fed and brushed the sheep and goats. Staff is wonderful and full of information. I leaned so much.

Stopped here on an 8+ hour road trip. Saw it on Google maps, asked the kids if they wanted to hold an alligator and they screamed yes! We had the BEST time. We live in the desert so we obviously don't have gators. The whole family enjoyed this experience. There was so much to see and do and the very kind and friendly owner said they had plans for more exhibits and things to do, maybe even a splash pad some day. The staff was extremely friendly and kind. They offered to take animals out to let my kids hold with no hesitation. Plan this stop into your travels, you won't be disappointed.

We’ve been to Gator Country twice and both times have been amazing. So much to do and see. My favorite part about this park is how toddler-friendly it is! Nice people. We went bout 30 minutes till close, and the staff was really polite. They let us hold baby gators, snakes, and breaded dragons. Shared a lot of knowledge and tips about the animals they have on grounds. They even spoke about expanding the park and in turtles. We went when it was cooler, and they said the best time to come is in the spring and summer.

Fantastic stop that is worth the detour. A short 1 hr south of Shreveport / Bossier, this is a fantastic place to spend a few hours. Reasonable pricing, great experience seeing the variety of animals.
Alligators, Snakes, lizards, Guinea Pigs, turkeys, Emu, rabbits, tortoise, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, deer, (I’m sure there are a few more I missed).
For a family of 4 expect to spend about $50-$60 and have a good time with the kids.

Loved it! Been to many alligator exhibits and this is one of my favorite. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The admission cost was fairly inexpensive. This is the first alligator park where we were offered to purchase food to put on the end of a line of a bamboo pole and feed to the gators! What a great idea. We had a couple of hours of fun just walking around and feeding the Gators and other animals. Nice variety of exhibits.

My family and I had the best time at Gator Country LA Alligator Park! All of the employees we’re so nice and excited to show us all of the animals! Sam was so knowledgeable and took great care in handling the animals! My favorite part was the swamp tour! Leo was so kind and made us feel so safe! He even offered to take a family photo for us! The tours are private so that you get the best experience possible. This was way better than having to go with a large group of people that we didn’t know! We went on a Wednesday and there was plenty to do for a few hours without having to wait in any long lines! If you are nearby, then I definitely recommending stopping in to this cool attraction!

This was a fun stop on a family vacation. My kids (7 and 9) really enjoyed it. We were there during the winter, so gators were not active. They were still around, just not doing anything and not feeding. Lots of other animals to interact with and see. It wasn’t very busy, so the stop was pretty stress free and interesting. Staff were very helpful and informative. Some of the information posters and the cage glass were hard to see through as there was a lot of hard water build up. Bathrooms were a little run down.

Tours & historical reenactments take place at this replica 1716 fort erected by French colonists.
Great replica of a French fort. All the staff is very welcoming and we've had a very good time learning about the history.
JitkaKac — Google review
You enter through the museum, just off Jefferson St. There is a $4 entry fee, but this includes the guided tour of the fort. The fort itself is a reproduction, built in the '70s from a 1700s map of the original. The reproduction is a few hundred yards from the original site of the fort, which is now private homes and Jefferson Street. You can opt for a scenic stroll down to the fort, or take a ride in the golf cart with the guide. Jeremy, the guide was very informative and congenial. He kept asking if we had any questions, but his presentation answered questions I hadn't thought of! A great historical presentation, with the latest updates from archaeologists and historians. I really enjoyed the short video of the fort's history. This was two hours well spent!

Today was Christmas on the Cane at Fort St Jean Baptiste State Historic Site. It is replica of the original Military and trading Fort. The very knowledgeable staff was demonstrating life in the 18th century. They were dressed in period clothing demonstrating cooking, rifle shooting, blacksmithing and making fire. They also have examples of items that were traded such as furs and beads. It's a must see for all ages so mark your calendar for next year!!

Very cool historic site for being so close to downtown, and the nature around it was beautiful. All of the staff and volunteers were helpful and knowledgeable about the history of the place. Really cool historical site / museum, where you can see an exact replica of the old Fort St. Jean Baptiste which was originally located not far from here. Even being a replica, the attention to detail put into the fort gives you an immersive feeling of what it was like being here over 200 years ago. The museum is small but has a few awesome dioramas as well as artifacts. No question that this is worth the stop and $4 entry.

All I can say is wow! Highly worth the stop. Only $4 per person and worth every penny. The replication gives a wonderful insight into the size and daily life on the fort. The employees there were super kind and informative even though we came in 30mins before closing on a Saturday. We had to get a crash course, but could have spent longer.

Awesome experience ! The museum offers a nice video that gives a better understanding of the life in this area during the French colonialist time. We were really happy to discover the real size fort replica in which the colons where living. They have an original map of the fort and where able to build it like it was in the 18th century. It’s a must seen and a really well thought museum and ground.

Stopped in on our trip home from Natchitoches after the Christmas festival. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and answered all out questions. We saw the house were African artist Clementine Hunter lived. She was a remarkable woman. The third owner of the plantations wife Cammie Harris was a very work orentiented lady. She let writers stay there if the would work on their projects. The story goes that William Faulkner stay there and after his first day she asked him what he did that day and he said nothing. The next day he did the same thing and Cammie sent him on his way.

This was a fantastic preserved plantation. Not one of the bigger ones, however it has a ton of history. It was also home to Clementine Hunter! There’s several of her works that you can only see here as well. The guided tour was excellent and very informative. I highly recommend the tour instead of trying to walk around and read the story boards. It’s well worth the money. It’s also the only way you can gain access to the big house.

Excellent tour of older, historic plantation home. Visited twice. Once during a tour of homes along the Cane River Lake and again for the 44th Art Festival. Lots of fun and loads of good shopping. Many people come and costs ten bucks to park nearby plus 5 to enter.

Wonderful antebellum plantation with plenty of original structures. Didn't have the oak tree lined entrance that most from that time period had but still very impressive. There were a few live oaks on the property that had to have been between 200-300 years old. Well worth a stop if you're in the area.
Some of the best pecans ever! This shop has some of the most unique Christmas presents! Enjoyed our visit!

This place is AMAZING. Definitely worth the trip, just to buy pecans, but there is SO much more. All of the art work is just beautiful and very reasonable priced. I just went yesterday and am already ready to go back! Worth the drive to get there - and the staff is so friendly

Much MUCH MORE than a Pecan Store! So many cute gifts and original pieces of arts and crafts! Jams, jellies and pecan brittle, oh my!! Susan the owner was so very helpful and Christie, her assistant was more than happy to show us around. PLEASE make sure and set some aside to shop here while visiting the area!

First of all let me say that my that wife and I have been driving to Natchitoches fro Gonzales for five years now to pick up pecans and us and family, its a full day but we enjoy the trip. The pecans are good and the people are great. This year we purchased 30 lbs of pecans. Our last 10lbs were put in a plastic container as we do every year. Well this time they went bad within two weeks. I called and explained what happen to the pecans. The lady I spoke to got real offensive and said I should not have put them in a sealed container, she went on to say every time they sell pecans they tell you and give you a Boucher on how to take care of them, that didn't happen. I would really like to tell the people who owns Natchitoches Pecans I will never buy anything from you again, if for no other reason the don't care attitude what happen to my pecans, you were very rude.i going to send these molded pecans back to you.

We had the best time ever! Definitely our new family tradition for all the women in our family to come and stock up on holiday goodies and beautiful decor to capture the memories that we get to hang in our home and to pass down to future generations. AND THE PECAN BRITTLE !!! RUN don’t walk! It’s out of this world delicious!!!

Great PERSONAL service. I live in a suburb of Houston and through conversations they sent my purchase of items to large to ship by one of the owners friends driving to Texas. I couldn't be more happy. If I'm ever in that part of Louisiana I'm definitely stopping in.

What a delightful place to find tucked away in Cloutierville. I didn’t realise fresh pecans could be different flavours. It was a hard choice selecting some goodie’s. It’s also full of cute locally produced artworks. A great little store. Very friendly staff, we are visiting from Australia so they were very happy to make a suggestion for lunch at Josephine’s as well as some unusual places to visit. Yummy lunch, thanks. 😃

Very interesting place. Great tour by the staff! It was very informative to visit Winnfield and the Museum before starting to read "Every man a King," the autobiography of native son Huey P. Long. The book's first edition, from 1933, is available for sale at the Museum.

A fascinating place to stop. It’s not totally the museum you might expect to see in a major city. This is in part due to the fact it is privately owned. The odds are if it were government owned, roaming through all of the faclities would be a lot more restricted.
There are a couple of buildings with excelletnt displays of forestry, the CCC, and a nearby USA camp. There are several older buildings some open and some ‘closed’. The closed buildings were closed because of safety reasons.
IF you want a short walk, there is a trail with some desciptions of the facilities you can take.
There were a couple of locomotives. The best of them is being restored and under cover. IF you time it right, you might catch a ride on the M4, a doodlebug.
They have a collection of older trucks, tractors, small cranes used to cut timber.
I would have to say that with the LA environment, visit the mill sooner than later.
As I understand it the mill is also suppose to be haunted. I walked around in the late evening and never saw or heard anything
Lots to see, lots to do. Lots to walk through and imagine seeing the wood that was cut there was used for WWII landing craft.
IF you have small children, keep an eye on them. There are a lot of places and things they can get into where they can get hurt.

This is a combination of an Army camp and a Mill. General Bradley is noted as the only "leg" to command the 82nd Airborne. He happened to simply be in command. General Ridgeway had the responsibility of planning, training and equipping the former 82nd Inf. Lots of photos bring back nostalgic times growing up in Massachusetts. The white scale used for weighing meat was something my great grandfather used.

Use to think of this as a wonderful place, spent a few days before Christmas there before my daughter passed from cancer. They had a special ride a train with santa.
So when it came to booking our wedding there wasnt a second option. We paid in full and booked almost a year in advance. The morning of while we waiting for the bride to show up, they decided to have a high school band competition in the building next door.
I talked with management who basically said the main office in Alexandria booked the bands. Weddings are booked by local management, nether really communicate.
They offered to stop the bands for a break around the time we estimated the vows would be said. However we still had the start and dancing after drowned out with marching bands. Special day turned more stress and bad....

Kent Plantation is a good place to stop in and get some brief (1.5 hours) history on a family plantation. Has a public restroom and gift shop. Though the gift shop is small, it does have a few items. There are several buildings on the property and not very far off the main drag. Like maybe a block or so. City has just grown up around it. My only complaint and it's not really even a complaint. The guide should brush up on her civil war history that effected the area at that time. There are some prominent battles that took place in the days before Alexandria burned. Would be intriguing to know how the house managed not to be touched but the other buildings burned.

It was a very good experience seeing the set up of the a well preserved home. The tour guide could’ve explained things a little better. Others in the tour helped me understand the history better than the guide. It was cramped and some extra time to take pictures would’ve been awesome but we were in sort of a rush. When I showed up I was unaware yours were at the top of the hour. I sat in my car for an hour but I would have appreciated if someone could tell me what to do in the meantime.

October 2022. Tour of home was detailed. Learned plenty from tour guide. Very informative. Nice to see original parts of home as compared to current condition. Driveway is a little tight for big RV rigs but parking space is open once you get into the back area. Clean restrooms and cold drinks available. Nice and fun souvenirs are also available.
Petting zoo with exotic species in a parklike setting, with general admission & party packages.
This was a fun morning adventure with my granddaughter. Many animals to see, photo and feeding options, gem and fossil mining, and petting area. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Nice lil adventure. She loved it all, especially the drive thru to feed and see all the animals.

So much fun! I recommend buying at least 4 cups. Try to avoid feeding the camels because they will steal the cup and scatter the food into your car while chewing on it. Emus are also a little stupid throwing the food everywhere but they are easier to get rid of 🤣 We loved the sheer variety of animals, from capybaras and ostriches to beautiful antelopes and a giraffe. There are lots of parrots and a couple reptiles in the gift shop. The two cats roaming around are super clingy and sweet!!! If you end up needing a car wash afterwards, Amerishine is a good one and they have free vacuums.

This was better than a regular zoo in my opinion. The animals look well taken care of, they are friendly, seem happy and very curious lol. My kids age 4 and 1 had a blast. I thought my 1 yo would be scared and cry but I think we may have a little veterinarian on our hands lol. She was petting the animals even the big intimidating ones like the camels 🐫. One camels stuck his head in the truck all the way to the middle console where she was sitting and hi/she put his/her head against my daughters n she closed her eyes n made a cute humming noise and the camels closed its eyes too!! I couldn't stop giggling it was so cute.
Make sure u hade some of the feed from the camels because they will take your cups right out your hand or vehicle. Once your round about drive is over u can park and get out and walk around and pet the other animals like the goats, hogs, cows n bunnies. In the gift shop you can buy the kids toys and look at the birds and reptiles. This was a awesome experience and the scenery is so beautiful. I will have to take some screen shots of the videos I took. Sorry I only have one picture. I'll add some later.

I went on 11/05/23 around 2:30 P.M., and it was the most fun and exciting zoo experience ever!
The camels are very aggressive...lol
There was a camel that literally took a cup of feed from the floor of the truck by my feet. Lol
I was a little terrified, but my reaction did not freak it out at all...it had a mission, and it took the cup without spilling any of the feed. Lol!!!
You will enjoy yourself here. I intend to go again.
It is very affordable, too. I believe $8.00 or so per person and $4.00 for the cups of feed.

We had a great time driving through and feeding the big animals. The ostriches and camels are a bit aggressive when it comes to feeding them from the food cups. Be careful not to roll down your window enough for the camel to get it's head inside the car. Two camels and an ostrich had an altercation over the food cup, and the camel busted my passenger window out. You drive through the animal enclosure at your own risk. I was not upset with the animals, of course, I was worried about the glass inside the enclosure. That's not why I rated 4 stars. The concession stand was not open, and they didn't have any big kid or adult sizes in t-shirts. My 13 year old granddaughter was disappointed. Her little sister got a shirt, but there wasn't any in her size. I absolutely loved feeding the giraffe. He allowed me to pet him while I was feeding him. I recommend this place for a fun family outing. I'll go back, but avoid the camels. The staff is friendly.

Immersive drive-thru safari experience for all ages without leaving the country! Beware: you’re liable for possible minor damage sustained during the adventure to your personal vehicle. Also, the camels WILL steal the feed cups and we had it scattered in every crevice from one end of the car to the other 😩 Definitely worth it though. The ticket building had birds and reptiles to see, and there was a few fenced in areas to walk around and see animals. We stayed for about 2 hours, went through it twice. Family of 7, with 3 adults and 4 children spent roughly $80
Destiny Harber — Google review
It’s an adventure. Get up close and personal with the animals. Watch out for the camels. They want the food and they will get it. They will stick there entire head and neck in your vehicle to reach it. If you don’t mind a little camels slobber, not a problem. The giraffes are very friendly.
John Black — Google review
Small but it's a fun place to visit. Love the people who work here and care for the animals. Drive through carefully and hold onto your cups tightly!😂 The camels will try to climb into the car and steal the food pellets🤔😉🤪😄

From feeding the giraffes and enjoying the petting zoo. To laughing our heads off at the greedy, clepto camels, this place was a blast! The concession stand was closed, but the gift shop was nice and houses many birds and reptiles. The playground is small, but the kids enjoyed it all the same. Would definitely go back, and recommend this hidden Louisiana gem.

It's such a fun and diverse zoo. We came here with our daughter and other kids while in town for a graduation. The place was amazing and I couldn't believe the variety of the animals. So beyond what I was expecting!! I thought this place was going to be small but wow! Prices are great and when you get in there and see how much there is, it was really impressive. I love the set up, the animal habitats, and the friendliness of the staff. It was so super hot so some animals either weren't out or were hiding from the heat, which is completely understandable, but we still saw the vast majority of the animals. I LOVED how they had fans and other cooling measures in place to keep the animals as comfortable as possible in this heat. We visited every animal and they all looked happy and healthy to us. We did the story walk and completed the survey and got to pick out free books from the gift shop. The cafe and the gift shop were both adorable with reasonable prices and the train was a cute little trip through the shade and around the zoo. We had 2 adults and 3 teens in our group and absolutely loved it so we highly recommend it!
And I finally got to see a Gator in Louisiana! 😍😁

We arrived 9:30am, on a Sunday, so it would be cool out & the animals would be out. Se only went on a Sunday bc of my daughter's birthday. Otherwise, I would suggest going on a Saturday or weekday bc the buildings, Aviary, & Louisiana exhibit (inside area) were closed; which was disappointing. There were a few empty cages & one enclosure was being weeded. It would be very nice if they would be able to finish the zoo & also to add some new animals/exibits bc parts of the zoo are just empty & unfinished. Other than that, it's always a nice outing in Alexandria where there's not much to do anyway.
Also, the giftshop was sparse & rather pricey.

The kids had a great time! The weather was nice and even the staff we ran into were super friendly as they were cleaning the animals habitats. The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars was because the tigers ALL THREE tigers were deceased and several animal exhibits were closed. Lion, emus. Closed.

I'm so thankful that Alexandria has this zoo. It's such a fun & pleasant place to visit. Nice walkways & plenty of open areas to see the animals. Even a train ride around the zoo for the kids and young at heart. Staffy is friendly & professional with the animals. Place and bathrooms very clean. The only complaint I have is the snack bar. Very little to choose from & very small portions for the price. Great place to visit anytime of year 😀

I have been to zoos all over our nation. This zoo is easily in my top 5! The animals were very well cared for. Truly a lovely zoo! The zoo is lush and green which makes for a beautiful natural environment. It's so clean for the animals & guests. Plus the zoo layout allows you visit all the animals without having to zip-zag or back track. It was a little under a 2 mile walk which was an easy walk, nothing steep to walk up or down.
Also, watching all the Christmas decorations go up for the Lights at Zoo it looks like an event I'd love to go too!

It is a pretty nice zoo and the prices are reasonable . We spent about two hours there and went slow, it's just right for a morning or afternoon adventure. It was not busy at all, which was nice. The only thing I could even complain about would be that the train wasn't running, but it is understandable due to the heat index being overr 100. Other than that the only suggestion I could make is that they should stay open later in the evening so that it is cool enough that the animals will come out. Most of the bigger animals weren't out due to the heat.

A lot of awesome animals. Went during a heat advisory and really glad they had AC restrooms/vending areas to cool off with a baby for a little bit. Had lunch at the cafe and the food was hot/fresh. Going to definitely be back, hoping their train is running next time.

The zoo is small but a lot bigger than expected. Not bad at all for $8,75, they have some exciting animals like lions, bears, jaguars, cougars, and wolfs (and lots more!). You can easily spend 2hours+ here. On a week day, it was very quiet, and you can get really close to the animals.
The only thing I noticed is that almost all the larger mammals were constantly repeating the same walk at the side of the gate. I'm not an animal behavior expert, but it looked like they were bored.

It was a really good day to go to the zoo. Not many people, which is always nice. A few of the enclosures are under renovation, but the ones that had animals in them are so worth it. It's a very large location compared to some. Definitely will be going back when it gets a little more cooler. It wasn't too hot today, and thank goodness for all the shade!

We brought our toddler here today just to get out of the house and when we entered it seemed like a cool little place for kids but when we got to the toddler section there was rat feces all over the chairs, floor, and toys. I needed a place to bring my kids for some summertime fun after sitting at home bored all week. I just knew this place was going to be packed on a Saturday. It was not and I am still in disbelief. It was so much fun. My kids ages 3,6 and 10 played for 3 hours and cried when I said it's time to go. Very relaxed and safe environment to!
Emilly Chandler — Google review
There really isn't very much there. It really isn't worth the time and money. Owners are capitalizing on the lack of things for kids to do in Alexandria. The place is rather dirty and most of the projects for the kids are broken. On this Saturday the place was under the management of three teenagers who obviously didn't want to be there. I would recommend finding something else for the kiddos.
Ken Hulsey — Google review
This place was incredibly dirty and run down. The floors were super sticky and all of the "attractions" just old and need a wipe down or new things. It was way overpriced for the quality of things in the building. We only stayed 15 minutes if that because it was just not what we were expecting. Definitely need to replace most of the things in there.
Amber Matt — Google review
Three stars because it doesn't take a lot to make kids happy. My 5 year old enjoys it there. But it's dirty, the floor is sticky, and a lot of the areas are broken or out of order. We got in free with the blue star museum pass. I'd probably drop to one star if we'd actually paid to go in.
There was also a camp going on while we were there and the employee left in the main room just sat on her phone the entire time.

Place was nice as far as exploring and variety in the play place, but the cleanliness was absolutely TERRIBLE!! Floors looked like they hadn't been swept or mopped since the place opened, and there was three employees just standing at the front counter the ENTIRE two hours we were there. Lots of wear and tear around the building too. Neat place, but has NO cleanliness anywhere. Not even tissue or paper towels in the bathroom! I've been now twice for two birthday parties. One was three years ago (before COVID) and one today. The place has just deteriorated and gotten dirtier in that time! I didn't even want to sit down anywhere, I just felt so filthy! And letting these children touch everything!!! My lord!!!

We spent the night during a busy weekend, and I can't say enough good things! The rooms were lovely and the beds were so comfy! But what impressed us the most was how nice, friendly, and helpful everyone was. We all were so impressed by the consistently positive experiences we had. Thank y'all for a fabulous weekend!

I went for my father's birthday weekend and expected a little more. The rooms were fine but amenities were minimal. I assume because it is a "resort" everything is extra. But I am used to SOME comforts being offered, regardless if I stayed in a hotel, resort, or vacation rental. There was no complimentary coffee machine or coffee, an ice bucket with no disposable cups, no hangers in the closet, and we had to request an iron. There was no microwave or fridge in the room. I inquired about a microwave and was told there might be one in the vending area. Unless all the vendor areas are not the same, the only thing available was the ice machine and a drink machine, which is disappointing if a person was looking for quick snack. I guess guests might not look for a like night snack to tide them over in the morning. As a tip for future visitors, to save costs on eating, go ahead and bring you a bag of snacks and a cooler of drinks to reduce your expenses during your stay. The indoor pool was enjoyable by my son, and it was heated in the area.. but it was still a little chilly in the area. Also, although the temperature did drop during the weekend, you would have hoped the lobby wouldn't have been freezing. The temperature could have definitely been warmer.

Paragon could use some work. I booked directly through the site and paid a higher rate than my sister who booked through a third party booking site ($50.00 more for two nights). Initially, the North tower room seemed to be okay until my son rolled the comforter towards him to cover up. Called the front desk and asked for a replacement and the only option was to switch rooms as they had no one or a comforter available. It was 1 a.m. and we were already in our pajamas. We switched rooms and the one we were given seemed smaller, toilet rocked every time you sat down and there were stains on one of the towels. Definitely not worth the price paid. The rep at check in was super warm and welcoming. The rep at check out needs customer service training. She did not open her mouth to greet me or ask about my stay, but made sure to tell me to place my room keys in the container as if I didn't see it. She also had an attitude when she checked me out without honoring my request of a cash out check out. My son did enjoy the pool and we always enjoy the theater treats, but the hotel rooms, could use some work.

I've been going to Paragon casino for years. I use to go up there sometimes on a weekly basis but now not so much. I've had a casino host for years and she is wonderful. I don't usually pay for my room so that's why it pains me to give the review I'm about to give. Even though my room is usually free I've been going to other casinos lately and paying for my room. Paragon has some great employees who I have even got to know on a personal level, but sadly they have some awful ones as well...yes I'm especially talking about housekeeping. We've been seeing roaches in the rooms, the sheets feel dirty, the floors are filthy...I never go barefoot like I use to. The bathrooms are not cleaned very well either. Over the last few years I've been requesting a certain room because I love the large balcony and because it wasn't as bad as some of the other rooms. But this last stay it wasn't the case. There was no refrigerator in the room (im on insulin so need the fridge),the floors were dirty and half the fixtures were missing. I told the front desk immediately so we wouldn't be accused.
Like I said at the beginning, I feel awful giving this review because the casino hosts are awesome and some of the long time staff that I've gotten to know are amazing; but I have to be honest too. For me to go bring my gambling money elsewhere (and I spend a good amount when I gamble) and pay for my rooms elsewhere....well then you know it's gotten bad. I miss the old days of Paragon, it was such a great time and I use to recommend it to all my friends and family. I pray they will straighten things out, cause honestly I feel like I'm cheating on someone by bringing my gambling trips elsewhere.

I came for a visit back in November. I was there for the Christmas expo. I traveled from Texas so I'm not use to the cigarette smoke smell. But this is a casino so I'm not knocking them for that. The waits to eat at Roxy diner were extremely long. But again I came during a peek weekend. They also had a car show going on. The resort was styled how I expected. The pool area was nice. I walked through but didn't have a swimsuit to enjoy it. Lots of parking and valet. Coffee shop was a bit slow but they were understaffed and as someone who has worked in restaurants I will never fault them for something out of their control. Coffee tasted great through. Our room was easy to get too, and spacious and comfortable. Slept like a log!

Ok where to begin. Hotel is very old. This time around they lost all of our reservations. So didn't get North Tower as requested. Room has no coffee maker!!! Had no fridge but a dented microwave. But I really enjoy my golf tournament and the course is easy enough. Steak house was excellent. Buffet breakfast is not that great. No fresh fruit but banana and apples. Dinner buffet with crab legs pretty good. Alligators in pond in Hotel lobby very cool.

This is for casino only due to that we didn't stay at hotel. The casino was nice and fun. We stayed all day Saturday and most the night. Explored the scenes inside and the gators were a nice little sight. We won and we loss. Played tables and slots. Dealers and staff were nice and helpful and friendly. Overall great time. Will definitely be back many times.

Came here with my Mom and one of her neighbors several years ago. I won a nice little chunk of change on the slot machines. The swimming pool was really nice, and the food was delicious. The room Mom and I shared was really nice. The bed was so comfortable. I slept really good. I would love to come back some time.

We rented an RV spot. The grounds are very clean and well groomed. The dog pooping section was overgrown and dog owners let their dog poop anywhere not by their camper. You can't check in until 3 and the pool closed at 8. Doesn't give time to relax and enjoy yourself. The laundromats was closed the 2 days we were there. There really isn't anything to do with your kids besides going to casino's arcade. We stay at camp grounds to go camping and enjoy that section. Now if you bring your own stuff (like golf cart to ride, volleyball, shuffle board, and horshoes) you can use thegrounds. they have this stuff but the building closes at 8 pm.

Enjoyed my stay once I switched rooms. Thank you Rhonda (I believe that’s managers name). Room classy, tub amazing, and pool beautiful especially for shooting content but it does smell strong of chlorine (didn’t get in for that reason). Waiter at the casino was very nice.

The casino, shops, and restaurants were amazing. The hotel part is currently under construction, but our room was very underwhelming. There were glass pieces on the floor. Was not vacuumed at all. There looked to be blood stain on the floor. No fridge or microwave. I hope after their renovation it will be very different.

As a Motorcoach Driver we bring folks several times a month. The Casino is a casino and sometimes the machines are loose and sometimes not. Nature of the business. But I always look forward to my Breaded Pork Chops from Roxy's. The new Sports Bar has huge TV's everywhere and not a bad seat in the house. Many food choices to select from. I enjoy bringing our customers to this Casino. Have had the pleasure of knowing many of the staff on a somewhat personal basis. Shout out to Dwayne my good friend and fellow brother in BLUE on the Security staff.

We stayed in the RV Park. Nice Park, all sites are concrete, most all Pull Thru, everything worked, grass cut, garbage cans for every lot outside, Cabins to rent looked okay from the outside, plenty of parking for extra cars if needed, playground for the kids, nice looking Pool (closed when we were there), Security driving around. Only issue is no major roadway to take you there, lots of bumpy roads to get there otherwise this would be even more popular. A few Nice Restaurants inside Casino, nice friendly staff so we ate well and enjoyed some gambling too. If I should go that way again it will be on my list.

This casino is a pretty decent casino as far as ambiance and entertainment goes but it's very hard to win here. I live fairly close to this casino and go on a regular basis but I hardly EVER win anything even though I lose a lot. The hotel looks really nice but the older part needs updating and they have been known to have bed bugs!! I know this from my own personal experiences unfortunately!! I think it's been even harder to win here since this pandemic hit. They frequently have nice concerts as well.

Nice big rooms. Comfortable beds. Nothing open during the week. Minimum bets on table games is too high. Why raise your minimum bet to $15 when no one will play? Why not lower it to $5 and get people to play and let them raise their own limits? Only two places to get food. Need to shampoo the carpets in the hallways. Slot machines don't pay very well. Good place to get rid of your money quickly and then just sit back and relax until the bus takes you back home.

Have been coming here for years. Up until 2018 this was my absolute favorite casino to visit. Since then it has been in decline in my opinion. Truthfully, I don't even waste time using my perks card anymore. The buffet is really overpriced for whats offered, the machines are really tight, people were allowed to walk around inside the casino begging for money. Like it isn't bad enough the machines aren't paying out I have people asking for money while I'm playing. I just wish it was like the Paragon of the old days

Stayed in the RV park. It's very well kept and the staff is superior. Smiles and helpful information from the ladies in the RV park office to the maintenance personnel. Loved the short hiking trail to the casino, a boardwalk over a stream through a small wooded area. Lots of dining options in the hotel. Casino, while not Vegas, was great. Was fun watching the alligators in the hotel atrium while having a Starbucks coffee. Beautiful indoor pool with hot tub. Lots of things for kids to do as well. RV park accepts the Passport America discount for 5 days. We will be staying there again.

Overall, had a great time. This casino is out in the middle of no where. Not much around. Only one diner open inside, so food options were limited, however food was good. They did offer some food in sports bar as well, but small menu.

Reserved room way ahead of time and reserved a non-smoking room with king bed. Got a room that smelled like smoke with 2 full size beds. Not a huge deal but I paid more for the other room and the staff refused to let me talk to manager or anyone. Left my name and number multiple times to speak with someone and could never get a response. I even tried to call and cancel my reservation for the next night and couldn’t because no one would help. They went ahead and charged my card the night before checkout before I could talk to anyone so I paid the price of the room I reserved even though I stayed in a cheaper room. Had to request new towels and soap because house keeping did not check or bring more. Shower had black mold in the doorway and the AC didn’t work that well. The smell of marijuana was an awful all throughout the motel halls. We had several people in our group with same issues. Definitely will never go back

Just went to the casino. Staff is friendly, and they explain everything if you have questions. Except if you call you might not get a friendly person. I called before going and the person wasn’t nice. The casino seems huge because you have to walk a distant from entrance to register and you get $10 free to keep playing the games. They have a lot of different modern machines and old machines. The casino in itself is a little outdated like carpet and doesn’t look like casinos in Vegas. You get free soft drinks anything else you have to buy. People smoke inside which was surprising to me. It’s a place to entertain yourself for a bit if you are visiting the area. The parking is tricky but you can find one near entrance if lucky.

First some backstory, the first time I came to Paragon I was roughly 9 or 10... Maybe!!! This particular time I'm touching 40. They had so many fun and exciting bright-light games. I'm more drawn to the basic games b4 the bright lights and they had all the good games. I brought my 4 year with me because they also have an area for children of all ages priced by the hour of course. Yes of course I would return.

Very dark, signage is very lacking, easy to get lost. Not the greatest front service desk. The floors and rooms were clean and the food and drink prices were moderate. If you're looking to get lucky gambling not such a bad place. For the price, not worth the stay.
Robert Bower — Google review
Food was good ate at the Legends steak house inside.
Rooms got two stars because bed was good and it appeared to be clean.
But the shower was awful. No hot water no pressure. Took it to the front service desk and they told me there was nothing they could do for me except call engineering. All the elevators were down not working and there were no signs on the elevators so we stood there waiting walking back-and-forth between the towers, trying to get down into the building on the bottom floor so that we could go to the service desk to let them know of the problems, only to find out that the elevators are out of service.

Nice room, not sure why price was more other than the view. First visit so the scenery was nice. Wish all the food venues were open, Legends steakhouse required reservations( did not know that). No brochures in the room to show attractions. Overall nice weekend getaway spot.

Machine choices were not as good as they used to be period. Also took 1 hr for us to get something to drink. The only nice person I interacted with was the lady at the players club window when I went to get a players card. Will not be going back.
Transporting myself back to the days when the Ancient Mounds Trail Museum in Marksville, Louisiana, was in full swing was a journey through time and culture. The exhibits showcasing the unearthed pottery from the Indian burial mounds, dating back to 100 BC - 400 AD, were a mesmerizing window into the past.
It's disheartening to learn that the site is now closed, especially considering the wealth of historical treasures it once housed. The displays of pottery added an extra layer of connection to the lives of those who lived in that era. I find myself yearning for the days when the museum's doors were open, allowing the public to marvel at the tangible remnants of our heritage.
Reopening the site to the public, perhaps with a walking path integrated around the Marksville Mounds, would not only revive the historical charm but also offer a delightful experience for visitors. Picture strolling through the serene beauty of Louisiana nature, absorbing the history embedded in the mounds, and perhaps even promoting a healthier lifestyle for those who enjoy walking.
In conclusion, the nostalgia of the Ancient Mounds Trail Museum lingers, and the prospect of reopening it to the public, coupled with a walking path, holds the promise of a five-star attraction. Let's bring back this historical gem, allowing both history enthusiasts and nature-loving individuals to relish the unique blend of our past and the beauty of Marksville. 🏺🌳 #MarksvilleHeritage #WalkingPathRevival #HistoricalJourney

This historic landmark should be properly cared for and reopened to the public. The site has so much promise… it just needs a little TLC.

Mr. Jennings, the director, gave us a personal tour of the museum and a personal outdoor description of the site.
This is a very important archeological site for Louisiana and the operation is totally underfunded and needs new AV and print collateral.
We were in Alexandria and drove over for the afternoon. We didn't see a single directional sign for the site and our GPS took us through an urban residential area to get there.
The walking tour was excellent but signs and the stops along the circuit need improvement to tell the important story of the Hopewells in mid America.

I went there today around 12 PM. The gate was closed, even though the hours are listed as being open during that time. Tried calling multiple times, no answer. We came back an hour later to see if they were just on a lunch break or something, but the gate was still closed. We tried calling again and again but no one ever picked up. So we drove 3 hours to see nothing.

I happened upon the Frogmore Plantation quite by accident. I am so glad I stopped to tour. They have guided tours but I opted for the self-guided tour. Carolyn, very helpful staff member in the office gave me all the information I needed and I explored freely the buildings on the property. It is very important to preserve history and I'm glad I had the opportunity.

Unfortunately closed today but a lot of it can be seen from the road. An old plantation and exhibits on agriculture of the 19th century.
The original house burned down a few years ago but another house in the same style and time period was brought to the site to continue the site.

If you have any interest in history or just a decent sense of curiosity, you should stop here. Allow about an hour and a half. This is the only active plantation with historic buildings that are open to the public. Lynn was our guide and did an excellent job telling the story of not only the business of raising cotton (both now and in the early days of America) and how slaves lived and worked. They don't slant history either way, they just tell how it was. It was very interesting to learn about the evolution of cotton farming and life on a plantation.

It was amazing! Even though there were no tours set for when we were there, we were allowed to do a self guided tour through the buildings and learned so much about cotton and what it was like from the time Frogmore became a plantation. It absolutely could not have been easy and we had so much more knowledge than when we arrived. Thank you to Lynette Tanner for a wonderful experience.

What a fantastic history lesson. Showing how cotton was collected both in the 1800s and today. The restored buildings showed how slaves lived and then how sharecroppers lived. This was definitely worth the time and money. Our guide, Lynn, was superb and did a great job educating our group.

I can see why this made it on the list for the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail where other plantations did not. In the gift shop, there are books that are essentially the transcripts of the interviews done in the 1930s and 1940s of the formally enslaved and one of the videos was clips of them speaking and a correlation was made to human trafficking done from those selling their children for drugs. The only intact steam cotton gin in the whole US is located here and is on the Registry for Historic Buildings. This whole thing was amazing. Yes there was still some whitewashing, but it says a lot that a tour of the house was not given, but tours of the slave cabins were. And the detail given to the actual operation of the plantation was amazing.
Very friendly and kind staff. Could have stayed all day, but was on a time schedule. Wonderful displays and loads of musical history.

The museum is in the former US Post office in Ferriday, LA. The arcade side was closed. They have memorabilia from multiple blues singers and they show a program. The largest collections are Jerry Lee Lewis, Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart since they're from the area. The tour guides were nice and knowledgeable. Free entrance - donations welcome. There's a gift shop too.
