How long is the drive from Los Alamos to Durango?
The direct drive from Los Alamos to Durango is 200 mi (321 km), and should have a drive time of 4 hrs 45 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Los Alamos to Durango, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with top places to visit like Purple Adobe Lavender Farm and Jemez Hot Springs, or the ever-popular Valles Caldera National Preserve.
The top stops along the way from Los Alamos to Durango (with short detours) are Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Durango Downtown Inn, and Ghost Ranch. Other popular stops include Chaco Culture National Historical Park, Aztec Ruins National Monument, and Valles Caldera National Preserve.
Valles Caldera National Preserve is a vast, scenic area featuring a 13-mile wide meadow that's home to plenty of wildlife and streams ideal for fly fishing. The park can be accessed via highway 4 from either Santa Fe or Albuquerque, each offering stunning views along the way. It's highly recommended to visit during the day when picturesque hiking trails are available, though visiting around sunset or sunrise offers breathtaking scenes - especially in autumn.
Highly recommend visiting during the day where the hiking views are scenic. That said, visit around sunset (or even sunrise) and you’ll be greeted with stunning scenes. Especially in the autumn.

Highly recommend.
Tip One:
If you are planning to hike, just know the estimated times it takes to complete each trail (according to maps as well as the visitor's center staff) are massively exaggerated. I walked slowly and stopped dozens of times to take pictures, and yet a trail that would supposedly take me 59 minutes (oddly specific) took me less than thirty. You will be able to see a lot more than let on by those estimates.
Tip Two:
The caldera is full of prairie dogs, which are adorable and can be heard calling to each other all over park, BUT they sometimes dig their burrows directly on the dirt path, so watch your step.
Tip Three:
Speaking of watching your step, many of the trails have a plethora of animal feces on them. This is obviously gross, but also fascinating, as it demonstrates all the different animals that call the caldera home.
Tip Four:
One of the animals you may cross paths with are coyotes. Coyotes are generally more afraid of us than we are of them, but if you see one with a baby, then they may be more aggressive. A good way to keep a safe distance from them is to hold your arm all the way out, close one eye, and attempt to block the animal from your view with your thumb. If your thumb completely obscures the coyote, then you're safe, but if you can still see any part of the coyote sticking out from your thumb, then you should back off a bit. Honestly, this is a good rule of thumb (heh) for when you encounter ANY potentially dangerous animal in the wild.

SCENIC and HISTORIC VALLE GRANDE!
About one million years ago, this magnificent valley was formed by collapse, after a series of tremendous volcanic eruptions ejected a Volume of material more than 500 times greater than the May 1980 eruptions of Mt. St Helens, This event climaxed more than 13 million years of volcanism in the Jemez Mountains. Minor volumes of magma, leaking to the surface as recently as 50,000 years ago, formed the dome-like hills between you and the skyline to the north, which is the opposite wall of the enormous Valles Caldera. The heat from young volcanism makes this area attractive for geothermal energy.

There's a tranquil beauty here you don't find many places. It's isolated and the only noises you hear are nature and the occasional other visitor.
Roisin Blanks — Google review
It's free and has plenty of trail options. If You're in the area and looking for a hike this is a great place to do it. I would recommend Hidden Valley Trail. It has an old ranch to walk around and a lush, tight valley to walk down.

Lovely place to visit winter and spring and summer and fall.. all season around. I visited during April and still had some patches of snow. Trail might be little muddy buy views are fantastic. Wild animal are pretty easy to spot if you know where to look for. Careful driving during winter and spring.. snow and falling rocks. .

Absolutely beautiful. Lots of scenery along the way on highway 4 whether you're coming from the Santa Fe area or Albuquerque...we traveled to Valles Caldera from both directions on two different days.

Off rt 4, up road 105. Private property so be respectful. Locked FS gate, turn around and park so others can turn around.
FS is was still evaluating site for reclamation and future use when we visited. Stopped and shared discoveries, history with each other.

Valles Caldera is a beautiful place! You must go there to experience God's beautiful creations. There are so many wild animals. I took a long hike to the top of South Peak and saw a beautiful royal bull elk. I was able to take a picture of it. It's a once in a lifetime picture for me. It's so cool and a good memory that will stay with me forever.

Beautiful place! If your a Longmire fan it's a must see for his cabin. Beautiful countryside with hiking, biking and hunting opportunities.

Breathtaking views! Amazing creation. So many prairie dogs along the route. Initially we thought they were gophers. Unfortunately there are no signs in the park, we had to ask for a special permit to get inside, no places to pull over. I still give the 5 stars for the beauty of nature. Land of enchantment it is.

The unique beauty of this place is well worth a visit. Arriving here after driving NM4 on the Jemez Mountains Scenic drive (through all the fire ravaged forests) was a breath of fresh greenery to behold. Sadly, we saw no elk. Perhaps wrong time of day? Wrong time of year? Staff we spoke to outside of visitors center were very knowledgeable and friendly.

Recommend buying tickets in advance for backcountry drive, visit. There is lot more to be explored in the backcountry which we couldn’t visit as the passes were run out. They give only 30 passes per day to minimize visitors. We however visited the pond and saw several prairie dogs near the visitor center

The area is so beautiful with cool Temps and beautiful mountain air. Plenty of pine and hardwood trees with hidden meadows and springs. Got to watch the elk come out at sunset and saw a majestic bull elk with the largest set of antlers I have ever seen. Gorgeous drive!!
The farm was beautiful! The lavender goods in the shop were lovely. My favorite part was the lavender iced tea and lavender gelato we enjoyed in the shade of the pergola out in the lavender field! I highly recommend checking it out! We took home some lavender plants too.

Over promoted. Really nothing great. Bathroom was a nasty portapotty. Zen garden was rocks set up in a small trail.

I bought a hydrosol and their essential oil. Other lavender essential oils I’ve purchased burn my eyes when diffused and I can never diffuse them. Not this one! I finally found a lavender essential oil provider where myself and my clients can enjoy the amazing scent and relaxing properties.
They have so many incredible products for sale and the location was beautiful.

Great place to just bring your lunch and relax. Love the peace and tranquility this aromatic place offers. A very simple farm but great getaway from town. I recommend trying the gifts shops insect spray, a nice alternative from harsh bug sprays and perfect option for the little ones.

Went for the lavender festival. It’s $5 per person, free parking. Great little place. Doesn’t take long to
See. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. Only bad part was the live band. Super loud, almost impossible to talk over.

Great spot to stop and relax if you are between local outdoor activities. The food was delicious and I highly recommened the lavender spritzer.

This farm is only open a few days a week during certain times of year. It’s roughing it— you won’t feel like you’ve landed in a luxurious place, like I had hoped. They are selling the property, not sure if they actually will continue to offer tours or products once it sells. It’s not super obvious where you are supporting to go to get here, and it’s not open in the winter!
Candy Hucklebee — Google review
If you like lavender, you will love this place. The lavender fields where you can pick your own are beautiful. The store that sells products made with their lavender smells like the field itself. Lovely!

Day spa offering several outdoor pools of hot springs mineral water, plus cabanas & a gift shop.
The visit was really nice. The pools were a comfortable temperature, not too hot. The folks operating the place are delightful!
Some amenities were sparse, like the changing room. The outdoor showers were missing fixtures. Perhaps, because it is during the colder months…?
Will visit again (and again)!

Nice little hot springs nestled about 45 minutes north of Albuquerque, new Mexico. They have 4 pools , roughly at different temperatures. We were in the biggest pond. It seemed quite hot, then cooled down. Luckily they only allowed a limited number of people. So we were able to find another pond that was hotter. Then the hot water started pouring in.Now it was a real nice hot spring soak. I didn't smell any sulfur. Plenty of changing rooms. Nice layout. But make reservations before going there. They do have cottages for overnight stays. Overall nice relaxing experience.

We knew this place when it was Giggling Springs and would visit once or twice a year. They've since been purchased by others, and the relaxed, friendly atmosphere has diminished. The pools are still beautiful! The water is still awesome! But in our visit last week we felt rushed by the staff and not terribly welcome. There used to be a sweet, quirky and delightful little shop inside the small welcome cabin, but now guests aren't even allowed inside. The cold plunge used to be the river, but now there are signs everywhere forbidding it. The previous owners always seemed happy to be there, loved their guests and were great company. I miss the sweet friendliness that used to exist here and feel sad that yet another small business has been consumed by something large and a little cold.
Juanita Brigid McCarron — Google review
After hours of searching for a natural hot spring we gave up and decided to give this place a chance. We are so glad we did. We expected to be sore the next day after hiking for long; thanks to the hot, relaxing mineral water we weren’t. I recommend you take breaks and bring your own water. We didn’t take breaks and literally spent an hour in water over 100 degrees. Worth it!
Jetzamani Peña — Google review
Beautiful, smaller mineral hot springs focused on relaxation. $25 for a one hour slot. Several small pools, all seem to be the same temperature roughly with hot waterfalls coming in. Lots of lovely cabanas and options around for relaxing. Visitors can't access the river but it's close by for ambiance and bird life. Beautiful mineral bottom to the pool.
1.5 hrs would reduce feeling any stress from the time restriction. Coed changing room was a little small and I felt a need to rush using them so others could come in.
Jennie Daniels — Google review
Quiet, relaxing place with a small pools near the river. Beautiful views of the canyon walls. Enclosed outdoor showers and ample seating for relaxing if you get too hot. Had a Thai iced tea which really hit the spot.

This place is amazing. We went first thing in the morning. Seemed like we had the place to ourselves. $25 per person per hour. Mary checked us in. She was super friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. The smoothies are fantastic. Showers and changing rooms are available. Small cabanas throughout the property for you to have privacy. Limited to 30 people on the property. Also available for rent are towels and bathing suits. Amazing experience. Thank you!
Daniel Williams — Google review
I went to the hot springs for an hour and it was incredible! It is so relaxing and the owners maintain a quiet and calm atmosphere. The landscaping is lovely and the view of the mountains is to die for. I arrived with achy muscles from a week spent moving into a new place. After an hour of soaking, all my muscle aches disappeared! This is now one of my favorite places!
Karen Holt — Google review
(We stayed at the Laughing Lizard, not at the Springs resort, so this is only a review of the Springs themselves.)
A lovely series of hot springs pools await you at Jemez Springs. The grounds are nice, and there are little cabanas to change in, where you can also leave your belongings. (Not locking) They rent robes and towels, but I suggest bringing your own. They serve smoothies and beverages, but I brought my own. It's a relaxing place to sit in the pools, listening to the river bubbling by behind you. There are also little sitting areas where you can have a chiminea fire and lounge with your group. The peace and quiet rule seems well honored by the guests. However, though it clearly states the grounds are a "no phone zone," I saw several people taking pictures with their phones while in the pools. This is very rude behavior and a violation of people's privacy. Please don't be this person.
Leigh Ann Livingston — Google review
A very beautiful, relaxing and unique experience bathing in hot springs among the mountains. They also sell tea and smoothies, we got mint tea and a coconut pineapple smoothie. It was wonderful being able to relax for 2 hours (2 hours per guest comes with a room) or you can do hourly. Room was great too. My only gripe is the bed in the turquoise room was way too soft. Felt like mattress was old. Not much support for the back after a relaxing soak.
Andy Milz — Google review
We visit often for the locals discount on Wednesdays, but when the winter weather moved in today, we knew we had to come by and take a snow day soak. What a treat! Lots of other patrons seemed to have the same idea. Aaron kept the operation rolling smoothly, professionally, and courteously with the springs at full capacity. Thank you for the wonderful experience, time after time!
lauren ray — Google review
Always a nice place to visit, can be relaxing if you hit the right time with not too many people.
Downside is the one hour or two hour time limit. Makes you really feel rushed. But still a great experience overall especially after a day of ice fishing.

I nearly always bring out of state guests to the Jemez Hot Springs. It's a beautiful drive there from Albuquerque and I've always loved sharing it with friends. This time, however, I was disappointed with how run-down and "tired" it was. The gardens were overgrown, no colorful flowers in the pots, no hummingbird feeders kept filled, broken chaise lounges, faded pillows. There was no tarp over the big pool (I read in another post they plan to put the tarp back up when it's less windy) so my shoulders got too much sun. The water was wonderful as usual, but I do hope there is more care taken soon to keep it worth the drive.
kara skeberdis — Google review
Booking the room in advance is essential for a visit, and it's important to note that the hot springs are not natural. Unfortunately, the staff's behavior was rather rude, which impacted the overall experience. Despite these aspects, planning ahead can still lead to a memorable stay at this establishment.
Durge Kunal — Google review
Lovely, slightly funky hot springs, by the Jemez River (honestly, more of a brook). Easy access into any of the 5 pools, they are all a bit different in temp and size, no Sulphur smell at all, but my skin felt great after. Bring water, and they do make sure that if you pay for an hour, you get that hour {25 per hour.
Nice drive in from the 550, going through the Pueblo then in the national forest.
Cristina Whitely — Google review
Ideal setting in quick access location! The host here was especially helpful with our plans, given we had a pet that couldn't come in with us! We appreciated her help with that situation! 🙏 we only stayed for an hour but it was lovely and was a break from amhiking to hot springs, which is what we usually do! Nice on site, outdoor showers and different settings for tub heat to choose from! We will be back!
Lauryn Spohn — Google review
One of my favorite hot springs I had the pleasure of visiting in New Mexico. The tubs are large, warm, welcoming and of course, relaxing. The decorations and vibe reminds me of a nostalgic, distant memory from childhood. There's just something special about this place.

Just far enough for a day trip from Albuquerque, but not so far that's you get tired of traveling! Surrounded by beautiful landscape, Jemez Hot Springs is a perfect place to relax. It was honestly therapeutically better than a massage!

What an absolute delight spending an hour at these beautiful hot springs. Such a rare treasure to be in an environment that blends so well with nature around us. The ambiance, the facilities, the decor, the luxurious ease of going from one awesome pool to another were all such a treat. Our mango smoothie at the end was delicious and a perfect finale for a wonderful relaxing interlude. Thank you Brian for welcoming us so warmly. I will never forget our visit to Jemez Hot Springs and cannot recommend it enough.

Stopped by for an hour on my way to see more of the woods and hike. Was a week day in September, so it was chill and easy and not crowded. Great views. Hot natural springs. Very relaxing. Worth the $25/hr.

Nice hot pools! There are a few different pools with various temperatures so you can choose what you like. Good views and a healing environment. Clean bathrooms, showers, and changing area. Overall a great experience!
Taylor Gerber — Google review
Love this place. Great spot to ride the motorcycle to for a soak.
However, I would really appreciate it if the staff was more effective at enforcing the no phones rule. The last couple times here I had to ask people to stop their excessive photo shoot and to stop watching a soccer game with sound playing out loud.
Not a huge deal, but I’d rather not have to confront other guests every time I come here
Steven R — Google review
I took my wife to our first hot springs experience for the holidays. After waiting in a long line we were greeted by a very rude woman who told us to wait and stand in the uncovered parking lot. It was very hot and I have health issues and we so waited for a little while. My wife explained that waiting in a hot parking lot is going to be a problem. She said, "REALLY"? Then we left. If you want a better experience there are many other options. DON'T GO TO THIS ONE. I got the feeling that all they were concerned about was money and profit and not customer service.
***UPDATE***. In response to the owner: Yes, we were there - 4th of July weekend. Your response to my review just solidifies why we would never go back.
This place is so sacred, so holy. It was a last minute idea to come see this place and I'm so glad that we did. The ruins are stunning and the info on the path really helped share the story between the Spanish and the Native Americans.

We preferred this site over the Salinas ones.
Got to climb down ladders into a kiva.
The video at the visitor center was interesting.
Vincent Labreche — Google review
I'm giving this place 3 stars because of the way we were treated. This historic site was really neat and I really enjoy ruins. I loved especially how we were able to get up close and personal with the ruins. I've never been somewhere that allows guests to venture out and go into the exhibits.
However, the staff is a different story. We prepaid for our tickets per the instructions on the website. Upon our arrival the receptionist was not friendly or enthusiastic about having customers. The machine didn't work correctly to scan our mobile receipts. When asking if they had a restroom, she thought for a moment and then told us we could use the port-a-potty outside. We didn't. She then told us there was a video we could watch and then finally that there was a paper map/brochure guide that could be PURCHASED for a donation. We paid $7/each to visit. Why not make the tickets $8/each and include the paper guide if it's that big of a deal that you have to charge more for them? The alternate option was to use a QR code and use our phones as the guide. We went with that option.

Beautiful historic site with a kiva that visitors are allowed to enter. The church is awesome in its size and when you think of how much work it took to construct.

This was a gem and a pleasure to visit. We enjoyed the history and the structures. Amazing place.
Aaron Atkinson — Google review
We took a drive in the area while camping near Santa Fe. It was unknown to us but we stopped in. The display in the museum was enlightening about the story of the Jemez people and their interactions with the Spanish. The inlaid floor is a work of art.
The walk through the historic site was smooth and informative. The brochure and plaques had similar information but added a great deal to my understanding. The remaining structures are so old but it's ready to imagine life here in the 1600's.
The entry fee was very reasonable.
Should be a UNESCO site. Under Covit restrictions not allowing out of state visitors right now. Land owned by Dar al Islam Mosque and ther VERY graciously allow access to Plaza Blanca....respect the site and their generosity of access.....

What a beautiful place!! Right now it is closed. Hopefully some day in the future it will reopen. Here are some pics from years past. I didn't see any pics of the real back of the canyon where the pour over is. Most have probably not been all the way to the back.
Kenneth Adams — Google review
This is an eerie place. First off it's on private land of a far eastern temple so you need to request the gate code. Once on the property you park in a small area and then walk down to.... not really a square but *white*. There are a bunch of towering limestone cliffs, completely surreal. Keep walking and you eventually deadend at a wall that has been cut by water flows. Awe inspiring!
david turvene — Google review
We learned about this magical land from our local rafting buddies. Morning is perfect for a walk here as the light is more pleasing for the eyes . Felt privileged having to key in the locked gates.
At the end of slot canyon, you can climb up to a plateau to get a better view. Be gentle and don't force it as it might damage the rock formations. Then you can follow signs and trail to get back down to close the loop.
Brian Teng — Google review
Wow! Amazing, breathtaking views. Definitely one of my favorite excursions so far. Plaza Blanca is privately owned and behind a gate with a code. I just emailed the owner and requested permission to visit and he said yes. He sent me the gate code and instructions on how to enter. I did take photos while I was there but the own asked me not to share them. I would definitely recommend this trip if you’re on the fence 😄 I did take a picture of the gate entrance that I’ll post, so you know you’re going to right way. You can see the gate from the main road so I think it’s fine. My only big advice is bring water!!! And lots of it. This place is kind of a cross between the San Lorenzo Canyon and the Bisti Badlands

I just want to say thank you to the owners of this land for being such welcoming and gracious stewards and for working to protect the earth, which is something we can only accomplish together. Beautiful place. Make sure to remember the sunscreen :) and probably some Kleenex. I had a solid cry in nature here. It's very special.

This place is not well known which is great. We were the only tourists there to enjoy this incredible landscape. It is quite difficult to get through cuz it's owned by a private foundation. You have to go to their website or Facebook and email them, and ask for a code to go through the gate. Without doing this, you won't be able to visit.

Great place to wander for winter hiking. The adventurous can do quite a bit of exploring here, if you're comfortable with rock scrambles. Free access. Worth the 1 hour drive up from Santa Fe.
Cindy Roper — Google review
Easy hike among the white rock landscape of Georgia O'Keefe fame. It is in a canyon, can be devoid of breezes and very hot in the summer. It is beautiful any time but in morning light it is at its most stunning. This is delicate, private land that commands respect and quiet. If there aren't other people around it is silent. Enchanting.
If by chance you are a Georgia O'Keefe fan, this is a must see location. Very well maintained and you can tour virtually the entire place. Not very busy because of whete it is. If you are driving by, stop. Definitely a piece of American history.

This visit was sublime. On my bucket list, the house and gardens exemplify the mental giant that she was. Everything is purposeful and you walk away with a glimpse into her soul. The tours are well done with great respect for preserving her house and grounds. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and thoughtful. Wonderful experience that I highly recommend!

O'Keefe museum is exceptional. Having visited a few times fine art content may vary, this time was exceptional.
KilnGod — Google review
We paid $85 for a 90 minute tour that could have been done in an hour. We learned a lot about O'Keeffe's life and yet, important areas were left out. Her relationship with Juan Hamilton, decades her junior for instance, and to whom she made her primary beneficiary, would have been interesting. Questions about her private life were met with, "read the book". Overall, we enjoyed the tour but would have liked more information.
Barbara Thompson — Google review
I'm sure the house is wonderful, but this listing definitely gets a 1-star review because it lists incorrect hours and also provides a link to a site that lists the hours for the Georgia O'Keefe Museum in Santa Fe.
This means that I confirmed the hours on the Google Maps listing and the website linked from it (the top of the page shows holiday hours for this week!), drove 3 hours, and learned that tours are actually only offered during some seasons and that the house is behind a locked gate the rest of the year.
This was pretty disappointing and hopefully this review will help others avoid the same issue. On the upside, I'd give the drive out there 5-stars - like much of New Mexico, it is absolutely gorgeous.

Amazing history and memories are carved into the walls here. I suggest going with someone who is local, who has grown up here all of their life. The family members that we were with told us what it was like when the original trains and horses and wagons pulled lumber and supplies through. When there were still battles between the native Tribes and the settlers. We could see where one of the other would sit and wait for the other to come around a curve to ambush them from a flat high ground that had a natural rock formation that hid them from below.
It was amazing and awe inspiring. I desperately want to go to where my great grandparents got married in Eastern Europe. My origin story...

Such a cool gem off the side of the road driving through the Jemez. I highly recommend stopping, there is a decent amount of parking on the side of the road so multiple cars can stop. Make sure you go up into the little cave if possible. There is pooled water and sediment structures that are just so interesting. Beautiful spot to quickly stop.

Nice little stop to check out a waterfall next to the road. Wasnt expecting such a cool feature. The entire drive on this road is beautiful and worth driving. Across the street is an embankment that is holding back another spring. A nice spot to jump out of the car, check the scenery and stretch the legs

The beautiful drive was worth it but the dam was so interesting. Lot of really intricate formations and it was gushing due to the high water level. The smell of sulfur was fairly mild but maybe that's also because of the recent rains causing a high water level? My dog liked it too!
Ghost Ranch is a popular tourist attraction located in Abiquiu, New Mexico. It was the site of Georgia O'Keeffe's other house and is known for its breathtaking scenery that served as an inspiration for her work. The ranch offers visitors the opportunity to explore the area on horseback or through landscape tours guided by art experts. In addition to horseback riding, there are also anthropology and paleontology museums, three trails to hike and stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Lovely! We just came here to do the kitchen mesa trail and it was beautiful. The drive here is also very scenic.

I love Ghost Ranch, haven't stayed for a few years and it is so special. I usually stay on the mesa and the rooms are lovely. The food is very satisfying, especially as all you have to do is show up, no prep or clean up. There are lots of trails and beautiful light.

I had an amazing 4 nights at Ghost Ranch in mid March. The scenery and hiking was incredible. Exploring the and facilities on site, getting to know the history of the place from Native Americans, to cattle rustlers, to Georgia OKeefe, the paleontology museum with Graham (shout out!), all fantastic experiences. The welcome centre staff were great - Beth and Eileen, couldn’t have been more helpful. The dining hall was great - getting to know fellow guests over delicious meals, comparing notes on hikes and experiences…I really didn’t want to leave, and will definitely be back with family and friends.

Most beautiful place on earth! Photo opportunities abound, there are tours going daily, but you can see what you are looking for everywhere! Another wonderful horseback riding experience at Ghost Ranch! The wrangler for my trail ride was Colton and he did a great job of making everyone feel welcome on the ride as well as sharing the history of the ranch. The horseback ride is the absolute best way to see the ranch and experience this magnificent landscape. The horses are all well mannered and the wranglers are always professional and friendly!

Visited mainly for the location, the O'Keeffe connection, and the paleontology museum. Going here coupled with the O'Keeffe museum in town was a good combo, getting to be in the location that inspired so much of her art, and learning how Ghost Ranch history is even more than just that connection. The paleontology museum was cool! Small but really neat, and a must stop if you have a dinosaur lover in your group. Honestly even just seeing the location is breathtaking enough. Definitely stop by if you have time.

My friends and I stayed 1 night in the dormitory at ghost ranch and it was the best value I think I’ve ever gotten at a hotel. The ranch definitely isn’t luxury but the rooms and shared bathroom were nice and clean. And in exchange you get to stay in one of the prettiest places in America where you can walk a few minutes to a dozen hikes with hardly anyone else on the trail (in February).
The staff was so kind and obviously cared about us having a great time. Food was included in our stay and the buffet tasted great and included options that accommodated both gluten free and vegetarian guests. The highlight was obviously the hiking and exploring the whole campus, and it’s hard to find anywhere like ghost ranch (especially at that price).

Great place with some interesting history & fun activities. There are a multitude of hiking trails with varying difficulty. Chimney Rock is the most popular & its pretty short too. There’s a few places mentioning Georgia O’Keefe & her time spent there. You can even stay in one of her cabins. The ranch has been featured in many movies & tv shows, documentaries, music videos & even advertisements for Ariat & clothing & products. There’s neat history with the fossils found there as well. The library was the old Johnson&Johnson house so the architecture is pretty cool. There’s also educational programs & retreats during the summer, but not while I was visiting.

My husband and I live in New Mexico and yesterday we took a little day trip to the Ghost Ranch. The scenery is incredibly beautiful and really well worth the trip but the state of Ghost Ranch is unfortunately in bad disrepair. The amount of revenue that must come through Ghost Ranch must be really substantial so one has to wonder where all this money is going. There is visible clutter and detritus everywhere and all the cabins are in terrible shape, it’s hard to believe that anyone would feel comfortable staying there. So many incredible things could be done with this space.. plant some cacti gardens or flowers near the cabins, clear up the scrap metal, move away the garbage truck parked near the trails, it’s almost as if there is no aesthetic vision or care put into any square footage on the grounds.I am sure Georgia O Keefe would be most saddened to see the state of Ghost Ranch as it has fallen into complete disrepair. Come to see the beautiful and incredible scenery, learn about the history and then maybe go home to your clean house and save $150

Amazing views. Worth the trip.
Road in was quite rough watch for pot holes (I was in a car), rooms were meager, but clean, bed was fine. If I go again, I’d take a coffee maker to use in the room.
The bad: Cafeteria dinner was sad, borderline horrible. Very limited selection, meat dumpling was room temp, I was concerned I might get sick. We had to sift though several plates to find ones that appeared clean.
The good: Breakfast on the other hand was great, hot and plenty of choices. Dishes appeared clean.
Staff was great all around.

The landscape and energy of Georgia O’Keeffe here is incredible, but, BE WARNED… make your trip a day visit with a landscape tour! Sketch the Morning with Susan was beautiful, and she was kind and knowledgeable - but Ghost Ranch’s accommodations and facilities are wretched. There was a lot of poop spattered on the bathroom wall and junk (like old broken furniture, broken screens/windows and general garbage) scattered all around the property. I can’t imagine anyone feeling comfortable staying here.
We appreciate minimalism and limited amenities but the website is deceptive in their description of the accommodations. It seems the facilities have not been updated or maintained in decades. The place isn’t rustic, it’s GROSS. My family and I now joke about abandoned-looking places we would RATHER stay at than Ghost Ranch.
The Presbyterian Church, who owns the property but stopped funding it a few years ago, should be ashamed. Georgia O’Keeffe would be heartbroken to see what became of Ghost Ranch.
HIGHLY recommend going a few miles down the road to the beautiful Georgia O’Keeffe Museum next to the Abiquiu Inn and taking her Abiquiu house tour.

I got stuck going to Monastery of Christ in the desert. Luckily a couple brought me to Ghost Ranch. They immediately offered me food and a room at a discounted rate because I couldn't get towed out by anyone in the area. The next morning maintenance drove me to the road and towed me out.
The sheer hospitality oozing out of every crevice of the ranch is amazing both from the staff and the few people I had the pleasure of speaking to at dinner are incredibly friendly. Speaking of dinner, it's served buffet style in a dining hall and the food was amazing! There was also this mango enhanced water that was incredible.
The room was cozy and had a beautiful painting by O'Keefe and there's a ton of facilities and beautiful sights. From my conversations with the front desk they also have concerts - sort of like a mini Woodstock, I think the next in September. Definitely something I will make every attempt to visit!

Wife and I were on a road trip to Oregon and stumbled upon this gem in the middle of nowhere. Not really nowhere because of the natural surrounding beauty. We made a side excursion and were in awe of the massiveness of this amphitheater. Really clean area and very peaceful. I am glad we did not miss this.

Very beautiful from a distance. Unable to enter and enjoy as they have it closed to apparently work on the bathroom. It did not appear as though any work was being done. I was able to snap a few photos from a distance.

Excellent stop if you are driving by, best to get out of your car and explore nature. Someone had a harmonica at the amphitheater and it made some great echos across the canyon, sounded like there was more than one.

Not sure if this place is still closed to the public. This was one of the few places that captured by eyes while doing a random road trip across New Mexico. I stopped by, paid the donation ($2.00 at the time), a sang into the Echo Amphitheater. Importantly, don't forget to observe the surrounding area of Abiquiu from the amphitheater's perspective. Very pretty.

Beautiful, peaceful and unique. A short walk on a very nice, paved, wheelchair friendly trail gets you to the Amphitheater. There are clean restrooms available, picnic tables for a relaxing lunch with a view of the Amphitheater. There's even overnight camping. You will lose cell service on the way there so I'd recommend downloading offline maps just to be safe. Go, you won't be disappointed.

As is typical when motorcycle touring, you are going from one point to another, but then you see something out of no where that attacts your attention and you have to stop. That is what happened to me here. This place was cool! I am glad I stopped and checked it out.

Very incredible. Short walk leading up to the site. The echos are pretty surreal and there’s plenty of space for many folks to soak it up. $2 forest service fee. There are restrooms. This is a little secluded so ice is likely. Parking is easy. We went after visiting ghost ranch for a few hours.

Amazing beauty against the stunning New Mexico blue sky. Fun side trip, easy walk up the paved path to the echo amphitheater. Echo confused our dog a couple of times.
I stayed at this monastery for a few nights and it was an amazing experience- it does take the mind a few days to get silent and exploring and the property can take some time too! ( ITS A HUGE PROPERTY with lots of hiking and exploring to do)
after that I was ready to fully immerse myself into prayer meditation reading and thinking .
I wish I stayed for longer, but I hope to return.
The food provided was delicious! All 3 meals were yummy and the main meal is eaten with the monks in their private dining room ( an experience of in itself)
The rooms were clean, wonderful and comfortable with beautiful views of the mountains!
The farm animals added natural Beauty and I enjoyed hanging out with the horses by the river.
Highly recommend this place!

What a beautiful and serene place. No priests or nuns, just monks, working on the grounds, knitting, and answering questions. Lots of beautiful art, and a wonderful chapel with a majestic mountain background. We were blessed with finding beautiful images in the mountain, like they had been chiseled. Stay awhile and enjoy the peaceful experience.

Although I was only able to spend a couple of nights here, it was one of the most spiritually edifying experiences of my life. Plus, the scenery is unforgettable. Nestled in the heart of a canyon almost 12 miles from the highway, this is one of the quietest places I have ever been. The monks are amazing people, too, and wonderful hosts. At the time (almost 6, years ago), the monastery was completely off the grid, but that has changed in recent years. The adobe architecture is also striking and blends well with the canyon rock. Paintings within the monastery are a very striking iconographic style, with some unique pieces. The painting in the refectory is especially spectacular.

Beautiful monastery in a beautiful setting! We just visited for the day but, my understanding is that you can stay there and participate (or not, if you don't want to) with the monk's activities. The road from hwy 84 is around 13 miles, unpaved and rough in some places, but nothing that a stock vehicle cannot do. Great place to go and visit, while enjoying the scenery!
Peter Hey (RV PLANET) — Google review
A wonderful place in a beautiful canyon. The monks are extremely hospitable and kind and have put a huge amount of thought into how to make their guests comfortable, down to leaving detailed instructions for operating the common room fireplace. (Special shout-out to the kind and welcoming Father Thomas, the guestmaster.)
The canyon has some of the best hiking I’ve ever done, rivaling some national
parks. I’ll be back!

Worth the drive on the one lane dirt road. After driving 13 miles, which took about 45 minutes. I was happy that I didn't give up at mile marker 5 and turn around. There's a peaceful atmosphere that is worth the drive.

The 13 miles of driving narrow dirt roads with loads of curves through the mountains is well worth it. You can not be in a rush for this trip and will take a minimum of 2 hours. But it is well worth it for the beauty and peaceful atmosphere at the monastery and on the drive
I'm glad I came here. Very friendly staff and great place to park. Store was open when I arrived, but was told they're not open all night. However, backing into this place is manageable for someone new, so I'm not going to complain. There are not that many places for truckers to park; finding these local truck stops are worth it.

As a truck driver, I drive 550 twice a day, from Rio Rancho to Farmington 5 days a week, and I refuse to stop at this travel station. The employees lock the trucker side of the door and make us walk all around. Even the trucks that stay overnight already have a long walk to the building, and still, they make them walk all around. So I refuse to spend my money or company money in this place. Respect our truck drivers Apache nugget. They keep u in business in more ways than u know.

Based on previous reviews I guess I should have been happy their bathrooms were out of service!! But would have loved a large sign saying NO BATHROOM available, especially since side entrance near the bathrooms was closed. Lots of walking around and no relief.
Also casino closed and half the lights off, kind of dark and rundown looking.

I'm glad the store is reopened. The restrooms are clean. Subway seems to be non-existent. I'm okay with that Subway is everywhere. My main reason for taking off two stars has to do with pricing. Be careful when you check out because what you see on the shelf is not what your things are going to ring up at. It shouldn't be my job to make sure that your things are placed in the correct categories or areas for that matter. That's why you employ people. My cold coffee drink was clearly sitting on top of a sign that said $3.39. It rang for a whole dollar more than that. Although I brought it to their attention I don't even think they could be bothered to move the product to the correct pricing area. It's very frustrating especially in today's economy where we're trying to save every penny that we can. Believe It or not $1 can be the difference of having dinner or not having dinner. The people that work inside could give two craps about whether it's priced right or not. So for now on this is just a nice place to lay my head or relieve myself but I promise that was my last purchase ever.

Saturday at 7:30 pm. And the place is closed. Hours on the web site says they are open til midnight. Be nice if they updated the web site. I would have stopped sooner in order to get dinner. Chef boy ardee out of the can again. Gotta love being a trucker.

Subway closed Casino closed and it’s 1pm in the afternoon.
They lack customer service.
Pizza and corn dogs & hot coffee not my thing.
No fuel or diesel for Truck Drivers was a waist of my 30 min break.

I would give it a negative 5 but that is not possible. It looks like somebody has been murdered in the bathroom stalls. Would not recommend to anyone. if somebody is brave enough to clean that place up. Bravo on you. I wish you don't get any disease.

It has never been open. When I arrive anytime of day. Even today it is 6pm and nope Closed sign in the window. Porta potties outside for use. It’s just funny to me to have the only store in the middle of nowhere that ya’ll are killing the profits with sales. Get 5 people hired in to run the store keep a security officer. And open this freakin location to regular hours of operation like your website says. SMH 🤦♀️ so over stopping here ever again. Ya’ll disappoint for real!

This little casino gas station was the most random stop I made on my whole trip from Utah to Texas. I was way surprised by this place and when we stopped here I was like why here? But when I went inside I realized that it was a good stop choice.
I wasn’t too impressed with the bathrooms but luckily I only had to pee so it wasn’t to big of a deal. The selection in this place was kind of random, like if you wanted to try a new candy, treat, or drink then This could be your stop.
They had an odd amount of ice cream there, maybe the casino get heated. If you’ve been driving all day and you just need a place to chill or relax then this casino is the place to stop. Just stop, shoot the breeze, and try and win some money. My moneys on you!

I had to use the bathroom so I pulled over here out of desperation. The bathroom was pretty average, nothing special and the store was a little confusing. Overall pretty average and not really worth a special stop. Of course unless you need to use the bathroom. 😉

Chaco Culture National Historical Park comprises a remote network of ancient Puebloan ruins that provide insight into ancestral life. The park offers opportunities for camping and stargazing, as well as hiking and exploring the various sites and petroglyphs. While the rugged dirt roads accessing Chaco Canyon may deter some visitors, a 9-mile loop through downtown passes six major sites, with further options for more secluded exploration.
Not easy to get to....20 +
miles of washboard dirt roads at a speed of maybe 15-20 Mph, but so worth it when you come upon this immense area of ancestral pueblo ruins....amazing architecture. No services at Chaco...no gas, food, lodging other than basic campground facilities....bathrooms.
Excellent visitor center with good selection of books and usual National Park sundries. Arrive early in the morning to see most of the ruins....ruins close at Sunset....no light on the roads out of there when it gets dark......come prepared with water...snacks...good tires....cell service sketchy at best.....If you are a student of ancestral pueblo cultures, don't miss a chance to go there. It's an adventure!

Amazing experience! We went for a day trip and it was plenty of time to explore the main road round trip inside the park as well as the trails that led around the park! Very maintained park and visitor center was very informational! Only problem we had is that we saw number markers at different spots on the trail but none of the paperwork we had identified what the numbers meant! Overall, well worth the drive. Restrooms at each stop as well!

A remote and fascinating location for experiencing ancient cultural sites in New Mexico. A long gravel and unimproved road is used to access the park, but (at least in dry conditions) easily accommodates standard autos (20-30 mph). Once in the park, most sites are easily accessible from pull-off parking areas. Trails are available for those who want a more immersive desert experience with the pueblo ruins. Well organized by NPS.
I did not use the campground but am certain the nights are fantastic for sky viewing in some of the darkest skies in the US.

AMAZING park. One of the best experiences I've had in a national monument. Lots of space, very well kept park and structures. Incredible to see these ancient buildings. The ability to walk through many of them, around them right up to the walls of the structures. The main area even has a whole section where you can walk through the different rooms. Very cool for kids and adults alike.
Don't be turned off by the remoteness or the roads; just drive slow and take your time.
Bring lots of food, water, and a full tank of gas.

Haven't been to Chaco Canyon over 25years, sites are unbelievably unique, hiking up to pueblo alto was a good hike. Seen elk, deer as well, park rangers are nice. Only bad part of this trip was the 14miles of "washboard" dirt road 'to & from' the park.
Ca Sm — Google review
To reach this park you have to drive down a pretty bumpy road, but it’s totally worth it! I highly recommend watching the 30 minute video in the visitors center before exploring the sites because it really gives you a deep appreciation for what you’re seeing. I also encourage some hiking if you can but make sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection! Solid footwear with ankle support recommended.
Jasmin Ford — Google review
Worth the effort to see. Ranger talks were a big help to understanding the history of the site. Only drawback was there were no exhibits on display in the visitor center which was disappointing. County maintained dirt road from 550 was not bad. The last section of roughly 4 miles that is not county maintained was a little rough but passable with no problem.
Mike Gibbs — Google review
Let's talk about the dirt road, to get to this site. Its HORRID. Its not just a typical dirt road, its grooved with lines that make it extra bumpy. The whole time, you feel like your car is going to be shaken apart. I'm not entirely sure my car did make it out unscathed, it rattles now. It was nerve wracking and I did think about turning around. For the love of man, please pave this road.
Now that that's out of the way. The site is huge. There is sooo much to explore and I doubt I even came close to 1/2 of it. Bring tons of extra water, especially if it's hot. I recommend coming during cooler months so that it is more enjoyable. They do have campsites here and if you want to see everything, you could definitely get a site. I imagine you would need a full day to see all of it, but as I said, I only saw about half. Make sure you stop at the visitor center to get a map.

Visited here on May 23, 2023 (after waiting 20 years to do it - thankfully I'm finally retired). Loved seeing this historic park with all the ruins, and envisioning the Native American culture here that taught their children values, including how to survive and how to care for one another - note: I saw the Kivas as more of classrooms and discussion areas (sharing stories and giving advice).

Chaco Canyon was awesome. Went in September. Not too hot and nobody there. We spent 2 days in the park. Hiked to the Supernova Pictograph and ran into 2 other people the entire way. Scambled up to the top of Pueblo Alto and saw nobody else. Love the 1☆ reviews complaining about the roads. That's the reason we had the place to ourselves. I hope they never fix that road. Go. It's well worth it.
M Ryan — Google review
First, stop by the visitor center. They are all super nice and know the area well. We always appreciate staff who are as excited about the area as we are. It’s a very simple place. You can drive the loop and see everything from your car if you want. Lots of hiking areas. If you only have 2-4 hours, stop and walk at Pueblo Bonito. There’s a loop you can walk to the right or if you’re in a hurry walk to the left. It’s the bigger of the two ruins, you can walk through it and see inside. It’s probably one of the bigger ruins sites we seen.

Pretty cool place to check out. $25 per vehicle or 10 per person. A few sites right off the road but a few hikes you can do. You could spend a few days here but 1 day is sufficient. It was fairly empty when we came at 10 AM on a Sunday. Your ticket is good for a week so you can come back. Note there is no gas for 20 miles so make sure to come prepared. Restrooms and water are available at the visitors center. Don’t forget a hat and sun screen!
Chaz Rich — Google review
This was much more amazing than expected. Much more remote to get to as well. You'll definitely want a capable vehicle to come visit. Lots to see and experience. If you want to go for a hike or even 4x4 off roading there are opportunities for that as well. Easily a full days worth of activities and things to see.

Fantastic for the heartland of Anasazi history, archaeoastronomy, International Dark Sky nighttime viewing (was at the autumn equinox event in 2018) and more. I just hope they never pave the entrance roads: I don't want this to become Mesa Verde.

So much to see here. It's more engaging here. There's also a lot of animals. Bathrooms are the cleanest we have seen. Maybe cuz not many people come here. The road to get here is rough. Please drive in a vehicle that can handle terrain or you could get stuck in mud.
Be prepared to spend a whole day or two here if you want to make the most of it. We spent 4 hours there and saw 1/8th of everything. We will definitely come back to see the other sites on top of the mountains.
Also, we were able to renew our park pass there. The ladies were very informative and kind.

This review is for Pueblo Bonito Overlook Trail which was a ~2 miles round trip that took ~1.5 hours to complete.
About ~20 miles of driving through light snow over dirt road on Navajo Service Rte 14 (From Petrified Forest NP).
A little bit of steep incline and rock scrambling behind the Kin Kletso near the beginning of the trail. This will take you through a slot canyon and up to the mesa. Follow the ridges until you reach the "End of trail" sign which is the Pueblo Bonito Overlook. Look for the trail marker for the descent back down. Beautiful views from the top of the mesa!

Amazing North American site. Lots to see. Hiking or no hiking up to you. I don’t think it’s very handicap accessible. From Farmington or Albq the entrance off the highway is 22 miles further. It’s 8 miles paved, 7 miles dirt county maintained road, 5 miles of badly rutted, washboard, dips an dives then your at the entrance to the park which is a 9 mile paved loop. Don’t recommend trailers or rvs on this road. Could do damage. Overnight camping by reservation is available. No fires allowed though. Worth the trip if you’re interested in Anasazi culture. Fall visit early morning before it gets hot.
What a beautiful site to explore in Chaco Canyon. If you love architecture and history this is a place for you. You definitely feel people's soul that built these beautiful buildings. Please respect and enjoy!

The entire Chaco Canyo complex is one of the finest archeaological sites in north America. You could spend several days here exploring Pueblo Bonito, Chetro Ketl, and other related great houses and kivas. The architecture is one of my interests since i enjoy building dry-stack rock walls and found the Chacoan techniques very inspiring.

While there may be a more complete Kiva in the park to see, I like how the floor of this one combined with a more complete set of surrounding pueblo ruins gives a better feel for the overall communal atmosphere. With nearby Pueblo Bonita this part of the park is where I spent the most time and probably took the most photos.
Elijah 'Eagle' Lewis — Google review
I wrote a lengthy review of Chertro Ketl back in Oct 2017 when I visited, but GMaps erased it recently, but somehow kept my photos, then had the nerve to ask me to review it again. I can't remember a lot of the details about the site now.
Site is slightly older than Pueblo Bonita. It was built adjacent to an older, smaller site. There is a very large, lovely Kiva here. Some of the windows on buildings were bricked up for reasons unknown at some point late in its flourishing period (12th century AD). Alignment of northern wall coincides with 18 year lunar maximum progression cycle (possibly the only known ancient culture to have built for this purpose), but you can't see this because sites are closed at night. Phooey! Site is located about a quarter mile from parking area, down an easy dirt path but I wouldn't recommend it for the mobility impaired. That's the best I can recall. My original review was much better. Poo on you GMaps!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and so glad we waited for the cooler fall temps. But for the roads to get here we would be back again but as it is we will sadly never drive those roads again.
This is the best lake in the area bar none. Other lakes in SJC wish they could be as cool. It is THEE lake. I would go with my grandpa on his boat when I was a kid. It's where I caught my first fish. Camping in Francis canyon as a teenager. Having too much fun, diving off the rocks. Now in middle age, paddle boarding up the mouth of the Pine river on a stealth camp. You just can't find a better place nearby.

The drive in was cool. The vistas from the campground are awesome. The sites are made for small RV’S. We have a 40' and it was quite a time finding a site we could work with.
They were severely understaffed. The lady working the office was by herself. The was clearly uneasy with that fact and I don't blame her one bit. We had to speak to someone over the phone to move sites on account of no one being around. The information they had online for the person on the phone to help us was not accurate.
Not to far from town and Aztec Ruins NP.
The marina looks great. Too many boats for such a small body of water IMO.

The most unfriendly, unpleasant, unwelcoming, unhelpful park staff I’ve ever encountered in 50 years of camping. Campsites are messy, littered, full of tall weeds and goatheads. Broken glass everywhere you go. No regard for the park or visitors. Worst maintenance and customer service of all New Mexico State Parks.

Too many fire ants. Got bit a bunch of times on the foot as I was trying to set up my tent. Also hated there was NO PHONE SERVICE. As a FEMALE camping alone, I wanted to be able to use my phone in case of an emergency. Last state park I went to there was phone service. Not to mention at this place, it did NOT feel as secluded. All the camp spots are way too close together. I would just give it one star. But the ONLY reason it is getting 2 stars is because of how beautiful it is. I hate that I drove ALL THE WAY FROM DALLAS, TX to be there and it was a disappointment. Now I am practically broke from the expenses of getting there and having to get a motel cuz I need phone service for safety. I want my money back.

Navajo Lake is huge! It’s a beautiful man-made lake. It look’s like it goes on forever and is endless. I will have to get a boat the next time I come as it looks like a blast to go out on the water. This was a wonderful option for dispersed camping along my journey through the high desert region. I felt like I'd discovered a rare gem full of gorgeous scenery and serenity. The nine sites on the loop offered a variety of settings, and I got there early enough to have a good choice. There are wonderful little rock-lined trails that take you to the best overlooks of Angel Peak. There are vault toilets, though I don't recommend camping near one as the odor is noticeable during the night. Also, you may want to choose a spot not so close to adjoining ones as I made the mistake of being near others, and they partied and played music late into the night, making it difficult to sleep. You'll need to pack out your trash as there are no dumpsters on site. It's a 6-mile drive back from the main road, and at times it's very rough, but it's doable in any car in my opinion. Overall, this is a place well worth the visit, and it is FREE.
Devin Munce — Google review
Amazing views! Free camping! Two pit toilets service approximately eight sites. Most sites are only van or small MH friendly. While two sites at top, best spots, will accommodate larger rigs/trailers.
One star removed for the six miles of washboard, rutted and muddy road to campground. Allow up to 30 minutes of travel time if you are pulling a trailer or driving a larger RV.

Tremendous display of "Badland" topography. The 9 mile gravel access road starts out very washboarded for the 1st mile, then smooths out to an acceptable level. There are 3 main overlooks, picnic areas and restrooms along the access road, as it follows the canyon rim to the Angel Peak overlook. The views of isolated desert scenery are 360 degrees, although the main canyon is to the north. There are some hiking opportunities, although we didn't have time for that during our visit. The campground at the end of the access road consists of primitive tent sites with picnic tables and fire rings. There is a set of pit toilets near the campsites. A quick visit to the Angel Peak overlook from Hwy 550 could be done in as little as 45 minutes, although the scenery easily warrants more time. Hikes off the rim or further excursions along the many desert roads should only be attempted by experienced hikers/climbers or overlanders, with proper equipment, maps and supplies, as the area's terrain and weather can be very unforgiving.

this is simply an amazing and unique place. easy to drive to and just far enough away from everything to make you feel like you’re out in the middle of nowhere. incredible scenery, stunning sunsets, and a 360 degree view that allows you to see the moonrise, sunrise, and sunset. if you’re debating on coming here, do it!

Wonderful hiking experience. Was here in October 2023. As others have noted, trails (if any) are not marked, so a VERY good topo map or GPS is required. If using an app like Gaia or AllTrails, download the maps as there is very minimal cell service. Another hint if you're using an app, make sure you phone is fully charged and turn off your Wi-Fi as this will save battery power (you won't be able to use it within Bisti, anyway).
And, as others have noted, bring plenty of water. Use sunscreen and wear a wide brim hat. Plus a kerchief or Neck Gaiter might be helpful to keep out dust as it does get pretty windy at times.

Loved the place but there are NO signs or path to direct you to the main sights: Bisti rock gardens, Great Flat topped arch, Petrified wood/ log, and Cracked eggs. There is a map when you enter but, after that NO signs. We couldn't find the main sights and neither could another couple. What we did see was out of this world and mesmerizing and worth a visit. Comments to help others: 1 As tou go in there is a row of power/ electrical posts. These can be seen from all high places. Thus, knowing that, it is hard to get lost. 2. There are bathrooms there. 3 7 miles further South from the spot marked by Google maps there is another sign and a road for the Bisti Badlands. Don't go there, we drove 5 miles into it and all we saw was a flat desert.

Beautiful, I would definitely recommend coming here. Make sure to bring a GPS as it is easy to get lost, it does not look like much from the outside when you first park but after a short walk it starts to look like you are on another planet. I recommend bringing some water as well.

2 entrances, choose the "Parking/Access" option!
De-Na-Zin Trailhead - A trail leads from the parking area approximately 3/4 mile to the De-Na-Zin Wash. You are basically dumped in a dry river bed, footprints go in 10 directions, there are lots of petrified trees around here but pretty shy on the formations the area is famous for. I hiked for 2 hours before heading out.
Parking/Access - this is within 2 miles of 371, has Pit toilets, a map, plenty of people and i was seeing hoodoos within 15 minutes of going through the gate, unfortunately I ran out of sunlight. Lots of people camping here.
Bring water and sunscreen for both as there is no shelter.

We just drove here expecting to catch some views, but realised later that we need to catch up on a hike which is around 3mi round-trip. We started hiking for almost a mile and then saw some footprints of an animal(which my friends guessed could of a mountain lion) since they were very fresh on wet sand, so returned back to the lot.

Great drive beautiful quiet weather . After visiting my fiancé and I pulled off to the side to view another section of the land, when we were hit with a sound similar to a distant helicopter (but pulsating) was very interesting and it disappeared just as quick as it arrived . After this we scanned the area we were standing in and notice HUMAN foot prints walking on sand covered in thorns and sharp sticks. These steps walked straight off a 20ft high cliff into desert

Nice, shady respite from the hot summer. We had "Girls Are Meaner" with lunch, and there's nothing mean about this wine. It sips nicely, and went with our lunch, too. The hosts were very friendly, and we rolled out with a couple of extra bottles.
We heard about this place from a Park Ranger at Chimney Rock (outside of Pagosa Springs). Based on his recommendation, we took the long way to Durango. It's a gem off the beaten path. The grounds are beautiful and the service was amazing. There is a great view of the vineyards from their outdoor patio and grass area. We had a flight of wines and none of them were a disappointment. Our favorites were "Brianna" and "Aromella". Everything was reasonably priced. This is a MUST visit if you are in the SW area of Colorado.

There was a food truck which was yummy, typical food truck prices, but you can bring your own picnic if you aren't interested in the food truck. There are tables and chairs, but you can bring your own. There were also lawn games. It was very sunny on the lawn the first hour or so, bringing sunscreen is probably a good idea or be prepared to get make friends by scooting chairs under the few shade trees.

Beautiful cultural center with outstanding displays, very informative and unbiased. It tells our history as a nation which is needed, the good with the bad. We cannot grow unless we understand our impact on others and this museum does a very good job of showing not only the history of the nation but the Ute people. No idea if it’s good, they don’t have any hours posted so I showed up and they were closed. Here’s their hours:

A beautifully arranged cultural museum that really gives visitors a sense of the tribe's history, values, and language while emphasizing the importance of....and the challenges of..... self-preservation in the modern world. I came away with a deep respect for the Southern Ute and was really impressed with the museum.
Admission is free, just make whatever donation you can. It's a great place for kids, too, and they have several children's activities. There is a small gift shop with lots of locally made beaded jewelry and smaller items, as well as a library, though we did not go in it.

Great place to visit to understand the history of the Ute people! The gift shop is also filled with lots of awesome Native American Art work that you would have to travel far to get. Definitively coming back for one of there events!

Very informative exhibition / learning about the Ute people, the culture, suffering, and rebuilding during the colonization history in Colorado area. Also the staff is very friendly! I would highly recommend spend another half day here if you went to Mesa Verde National Park or Pagosa Springs.

Well done museum with informative displays and art work.
Locally inspired resort offering modern rooms & suites, plus a casino, an indoor pool & mini-golf.
We were here for a work related party event and it was a great time! The rooms were beautiful and clean. The bathrooms were spacious and there was a walk in shower and a tub!
The pool was great, but it is only 3.5 feet deep throughout the whole pool. It would have been amazing for our kiddos!
The casino was nice and looked like it had quite a bit of options for playing.
The food we received at our party was great, but we didn't visit the bar afterward to try anything else. I would definitely return.

From the outside looking in you would imagine this Casino to be great, filled with an immense opportunity for a great time. Unfortunately, taking your first step in you are greeted with a very rude group of check in personnel. My partner and I came from 5 hours away and arrived at 2 with the check-in time being at 3. Most places that have 4 floors of rooms will allow you to check in early especially if there is almost no one at the resort. We were told the room would not be ready even though we did not see a single other person walk in to stay at the resort. We also had to ask to put our bags in a secure area so that we may use the facilities at the resort, something that should be offered if you are not able to check in early. You have to pay for drinks at this casino which is a horrible rule being that every other casino in Colorado gives you free drinks if you are at least putting money in their machines. The bartenders at this resort are some of the worst I have experienced in my life. Asking for drinks was addressed by side eye glances, rolled eyes, and smacking of the mouth. The two women who were serving us were incredibly disrespectful and should not be in this profession. When a bartender can't give you even the slightest eye contact they should never expect to receive a tip from a patron. Take a trip to Durango if you need some great bartender service at Gazpacho! The service at Sky Ute is absolutely abysmal, the only reason for the 2 stars is the room and the pool. Although the shower in the room was horribly designed, the pool was very unique. Glad we took some of their money home in winnings from the slots!

I visited the Sky Ute for the Scrapin the Rockies event. Seeing custom vehicles inside was a beautiful touch to the event. The staff was super friendly and the hotel is well kept.
Only 2 personal complaints. My mini fridge in the room definitely needs to be defrosted to help regulate the temp. It was turned up, but barely cold. There is about 2"-3" of ice built up around the freezer part. 2nd one is food. There's quite a few places to eat, but they are only open certain hours of the day. Just a suggestion, and I'm sure it's a lack of staffing. But it would be awesome if willows was open all day during the event. The menu at Rolling thunder is very limited(1 page) compared to Willows(2 pages). Just my observation. Thank you for doing a burger on fry bread.
The pool area is pretty awesome too. I like that it's not easily accessible.

Great resort, lots to do, great food, great rooms, the pool was amazing same for the gym. A bit of a climb away from everything you got to go a few miles to a store if you need anything, but other than that a great experience.

We loved this casino. It was very fun to play here. The employees were all friendly and smiling with wonderful We story. Did not stay in hotel but gambled and ate dinner. The ribeye steak was perfect. All sides were excellent but the spinach was standout delicious. I am in process of booking a stay here in the next month. So excited yo return!

Giving this secret hidden gem a definite five star. Rooms are reasonably priced. The casino offers great options for different types of slot machines. Anytime I had to interact with staff they took care of everything and went above and beyond for some of the best customer service experience I’ve ever experienced and wow it was impressive. Great job guys keep up the good work. My room was excellent very clean easy to navigate to and didn’t hear any anybody else. On the floor I was assigned. I’m definitely going to be back here as being treated like a king! Very impressive.
The rooms were above clean and very well maintained. Impressed with everything they had offered and all around was a great experience recommend for anyone who wants to experience a 5 star hotel restaurant and everything that they offer. Very impressed and recommended for everyone!!

Clean rooms! Great pool and hot tub! I'd give a 5 star if our toilet handle wasn't broken when we got in our room. We dealt with it because you guys were booked out the night we were there and wanted to be close to our friends. We seriously enjoyed ourselves. The staff was good to us too!
Cali VanBuren — Google review
As a casino I would have given them 4 stars.
As a "Hotel-Resort" I'm pushing it with 2 stars.
In brief, it's easy to recognize it was a very nice hotel at one time. But maintenance hasn't kept up.
To many broken, dirty and worn out items to list them all. But they were so abundant we debated on whether to check-out after just an hour in our room.
Some could be blamed on poorly supervised cleaning standards, but much more appears to be the result of unqualified maintenance supervision.
There is no excuse for shower controls falling off in your hand. Toilets rocking because they aren't anchored properly, cockeyed-loose toilet seats and much more. These are not difficult or expensive issues to correct. But there needs to be the desire to keep everything working properly, and that's what we felt was the core problem. When you find so many shortcomings, you have to conclude that those responsible just don't care.
It's my intention to email the the facility CEO with a full list of issues simply because in spite of the short commings, we did encounter many professional, wonderful and helpful employees. Reviews such as this certainly don't help them, but they are not in a position to address them either. These are management issues.

Great place to go and have fun. Great time for the whole family. Bowling, gambling, food, lodging. Had a great time. Service was lacking a bit in certain areas. Although, to be fair, some areas were very busy. That was the only downside of my experience. Otherwise, family very much enjoyed it.

We went in for a spell and we’re planning to eat but all the restaurants are apparently closed on Monday’s. So anyhow we had drinks at the lounge and our server Derick was amazing. He was so polite and friendly and very helpful in giving us recommendations for our vacation. The drinks were spot on and we had fun in the casino!

We love Mel! (From 7 Rivers) Rooms are always impeccable! The pool, the bowling, there's so much activities. Breakfast with Hannah at Willows is always delicious. The casino floor is always a blast, but the machines are kinda tight. And it's a little hard to get the points for the promotions. The only reasons for the missing star.
I highly recommend visiting this casino.

Stand in line for this cafeteria looking restaurant.. 30minutes …. Sat in uncomfortable table and waited for waitress to notice us 34minutes… waitress states with a sarcastic attitude that food will take 1-1.5 hours.. didn’t even offer a drink lol.. straight to the point. So I asked her if that’s the way they tell their customers to leave? Anyway ordered at 6:51 it’s 7:34 and not even a piece of bread or a update on food. This place so far sucks. Just to get food it’s 2 hour this better be the best steak and shrimp ever because obviously they have to fish and kill the cow. As per my experience traveling all over the world. Bread service should be offered especially for waiting. After receiving our super bad meal at 7:58 the lady manager with short short hair , apologized she was so sweet and professional yet embarrassed by the kitchen she did not charge us, that’s why I up it to two stars.

During my recent visit to the Sky Ute Casino and Resort, I was treated to a truly exceptional experience that combined luxurious accommodations, thrilling entertainment, and budget-friendly options. This five-star review is a testament to the remarkable hospitality, exciting gambling opportunities, and affordable amenities that make Sky Ute Casino and Resort a standout destination.
Upon arrival, I was delighted to find that our King bed room with a balcony surpassed our expectations. The spacious and comfortable accommodations provided a serene retreat after a day of excitement. The balcony offered breathtaking views, allowing us to unwind and take in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The attention to detail and commitment to providing a luxurious experience was evident throughout our stay.
Dinner and gambling were the highlights of our visit, and Sky Ute Casino and Resort did not disappoint. The wide range of gaming options, from slots to table games, ensured that there was something for everyone. The thrill of the games combined with the friendly and attentive staff made for an exhilarating atmosphere. What made our experience even more special was our luck at the tables, resulting in significant winnings. The combination of entertainment and the possibility of winning made our time at the casino truly unforgettable.
One of the standout aspects of our visit was the affordability of the entire experience. Despite the luxurious accommodations and thrilling entertainment, Sky Ute Casino and Resort offered reasonably priced options throughout our stay. The meals, in particular, were a standout. The breakfast the next day was delicious and provided a satisfying start to our day. The fact that everything was very affordable, including the meals, added an extra layer of satisfaction to our overall experience.
Beyond the exceptional amenities, what truly sets Sky Ute Casino and Resort apart is the staff's dedication to ensuring a memorable and enjoyable visit. Their friendly and professional demeanor made us feel welcome and cared for throughout our stay. They were readily available to answer any questions, provide recommendations, and ensure that our needs were met. Their commitment to exceptional service added a personal touch that elevated our experience to new heights.
In conclusion, Sky Ute Casino and Resort is a gem that combines luxury, entertainment, and affordability in a truly remarkable way. The King bed room with a balcony provided a serene and comfortable haven, while the dinner and gambling experiences were filled with excitement and enjoyment. The affordability of the entire experience, including meals, further enhanced our visit. With friendly staff and a commitment to providing an unforgettable experience, Sky Ute Casino and Resort deserves every bit of its five-star rating.

Actually, the first stay was fantastic. Room 208 was clean and really nice. A week layer o was on room 413. This was what, on the surface, was a similar room, but this was a used and less than clean room. I gave great reviews for my first stay. Clean. Large space. Clean. Great bathroom. Clean. Comfy beds. Clean... Yes, there is a pattern. Second stay... not so much. Hair in the tub and sink. Aldo, the sink didn't drain. The bathroom and room vanity/desk were damaged and VERY used. There was blood on the comforter of one of the beds and stains on the carpet. The shower had pink mold and was really unstable around the door. Now, to be fair, again, room 208 was nice. No issues. Clean. Almost...new. I'm not sure what the deal is, but. I know I felt cheated. Just be aware of and check before you commit. Tisha, the manager was nice, I do think she would have tried to make things right if I had said, but I just needed a place to stay. ALSO...as a veteran, I received my discount on the first stay, but the hotel would not honor on my second stay. Please take a moment and verify. Again, I loved my first experience!!!! 4 stars. Hoodwinked the second.

This is always a nice place to visit when I get a chance. It's not a far drive from Durango and is full of nice scenery. There are a variety of places to eat or drink. The night life scene is a change of pace and draws a good crowd. The slot machines are nice and give you the opportunity to keep playing. The building is very nice and clean. Plenty of parking. Have fun.

Beautiful location, great place to enjoy entertainment. Bar service sucked. The bartenders (2) located on the casino floor need a lesson in customer service. I observed a bar tender complete several transactions with cutting limes, handling cash then placing a lime in a Corona bottle and serving it to customers without washing her hands. This Casino does not have enough of food options available. They are in much need to hire staffing but they can sure keep liquid fuel going to their customers until they close. The gift shop should have more snack options since there are no vending machines available and no restaurants open late in the evening. In the flip side, the restrooms are well maintained, very clean.

I stayed here for a work trip. The rooms were great although a small kitchenette would be really nice. The pool is big in the fitness area is pretty up-to-date. The laundry takes quarters. The event center is absolutely amazing, their banquet rooms and bingo hall is cool. Their bowling alley is really nice and the restaurants in the building are great.
I won the biggest jackpot of my life here. Cannot wait to come back! Sign up for the players club if you’re going to gamble. You get some cool free stuff.

Ancient ruins, archaeological displays & replicas of native dwellings, plus a research library.
What an amazing place! You’re given a detailed booklet at the entrance to follow as you make your visit. Initially looking over the site as you make your way down it doesn’t look too inspiring… how wrong first impressions are!
The extensive ruins are accessible by following the trail and the booklet brings them alive.
The details of the heritage trail again bringing the artefacts to life.
This is a great place to visit for a very reasonable price.

Wonderful exhibit all the way around. The museum part was excellent, very informative. It is a self guided tour. They give you a book to carry along the trail that gives great detail. There is a park here also. The walk to and from museum to the ruins is very steep. Our older teenage boys really enjoyed this place.

Very nice small museum, with interesting Chacoan culture displays. Walking interpretive trail goes down a steep paved path from the gift shop/museum to an area with a replica Chacoan settlement, the pioneer cabin from the late 1800's and a small display of the original pueblo ruins. A lower parking lot, avoids the steep walk for those that need an easier path. The interpretive trail is level and relatively short, +/- 1/4 mile.
The gift shop has a large deck with chairs that provide wonderful views of the surrounding countryside as well as the museum trails and their large cottonwoods. This area is lovely on the Fall when the cottonwoods turn bright gold.

Beautiful! The site was amazing! The museum was small an had really beautiful large photographs on display. Was well curated. The site itself was amazing. Only downside, no shade. So if you're raking kids of older folk, take an umbrella. Also carry a water bottle with you. The entrance is a path that is kinda steep. You have to go up the same steep path to exit. Theres no shade. So be careful on HOT days!

So I found this on a paper map of New Mexico and thought I’d check it out. It’s pretty small on the map, but in reality it’s actually quite large. The gift shop is a bit pricey, but the stuff in there looks handmade so I think it’s worth the cost. The staff seemed pretty friendly. The walking tour takes kind of a long time if you read the whole guide, but if you skim it it’s pretty quick so to each their own pace. It’s super educational and worth the stop.

The museum is 4 dollars for adults. It is open 9am to 5pm. The museum main building has a group of artifacts that explain the ruins. A trail leads from the gift shops out to the ruins. Make sure you wear good sole shoes due to thrones. Bring water we read most of the booklet and followed the numbers and it took us 2.5 hours to see it all.

Barely noticeable in the shadow of its more famous "cousin" (Chaco Canyon), the Salmon Ruins (and associated Museum), located in Bloomfield, NM, are a "not-to-be-missed" stop for anyone interested in Pueblo Indian archaeology, history, and culture. It's unusual in that it is privately owned by a non-profit foundation, and therefore gets no federal funding. Nevertheless, the site - a partially excavated village, or "Great House," is well-maintained, and is supported by a well-curated museum presenting history, context, artifacts, and other fascinating information. The staff are not only friendly, but *knowledgeable.* A resident archaeologist there gave us an all-day tour of Chaco Canyon, and was able to provide lots of interesting detail about Salmon Ruins as well. Allow at least three hours to absorb everything.
Aztec Ruins National Monument is a prehistoric Puebloan site constructed circa AD 1100, featuring a Great Kiva and interconnected ceremonial structures. The location was connected to Chaco through a southern road. Notably, the Great Kiva has been reconstructed to provide insight into its original appearance. Additionally, several rooms maintain their original roofs intact. Visitors can learn more about the site through the informative museum attached to it.
Fantastic walk through site. Great for kids education and growth. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.
Good parking, and parking for RVs and trailers in the back.
Approximately 30 to 45 walking tour outside through amazing ruins. Great display of unearthed artifacts and information. Recommend watching the free short welcome Film in the theater before the walking tour.
All Free, but try donating a little of that colone cancer McDonald's Burger money you suck down to a good cause and help keep places like this open.
We highly recommend this for a visit.

Definitely a fun place to visit. Free to park and go in. Cute little gift shop, then go outside and have a blast exploring the ruins. Follow the trails and markers. You can even climb inside a few of them and crawl around or bend down to get through the halls. There’s a tall trail up to the top to see the whole view of the ruins. Lots of play areas, great for all ages. It’s a historic site so that’s fun. I had so much fun crawling into dark places to see what’s on the other side. There was lots of people there too but everyone was pretty spread apart and respectful.

This is a must see site. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. The site looks big but actually very easy to navigate. There was a choice of a guidebook or cell phone audio app, or you could use a loaned spiral bound guide. Halfway through, a guide came out to give more information and answer questions. He pointed out little factoids that we would not have known like the numbered plugs found on the wood beams. I came away with a much greater appreciation of the ancient Pueblo and their unique way of life.

Great historical site. I was downplaying this site because of the major national sites that are nearby. However, this easy access national monument offers just as much insight into the region only in a thimble full.

This NPS site does not charge an entry fee. However, I recommend strongly purchasing a guide for the nominal cost of $2, such that you know what the structures are (they are labeled with numbers). The visitor centre also serves as a small but nicely done museum telling the history of the site and the Pueblo people. Although there is no unequivocal evidence, it is speculated that the thriving Aztec community, which took a century from design to completion, was abandoned due to the combination of social instability, drought and exhaustion of resources. We spent the whole morning exploring the site, and the most amazing of which is the reconstructed great kiva (the largest kiva on this site). The Pueblo people are probably the most religious population ever existed.
Museum featuring displays about regional history & culture, plus temporary exhibitions & art shows.
Pretty cool - it's grown a lot since I was last here as a kid. The dinosaur and oil/gas exhibits were great! We got a few cool things from the gift shop and met an artist who was having his art displayed at the museum. What was really neat is that his paintings were of the local area and many recognizable landscapes.

A little loud but that’s to be expected. The waitress was great, and the food was almost better. Did have to ask for a little more dressing, but it was great

Great service and even better food. We had the Green Chile Lasagna and Drunken Sandwich. Both were amazing. You must try the spicy Ghost Pepper Ranch for your fires. The Chicken Fried Steak is also great. Several great brews to try. I was impressed by the sour. You have to try this place at least once, maybe twice.

Bartender was a bit overwhelmed and looking to clock out. The beers I tried were ice cold and very tasty! I grabbed a pool table( all were recently refurbished) which played like brand new! Locals started to filter in for happy hour, and warned me that after 6 pm tables are hard to get or keep when the sharks start swimming,
Overall, I was impressed with the entire 3 Rivers concept, definitely not what I expected to find in a town whose sidewalks role up at 9pm. Give it a go !

Love the servers there, they are always helpful and friendly. Food is always good … especially the fish and chips. Dessert was phenomenal tonight

What a wonderful little place with some great historical significance! We did not have any problems with getting a seat right away! The waiter ( bartender as well) was quick and efficient, friendly and attentive. Our meal didn’t take long despite the fact that they had a house full. Loved the steak sand and Cajun fries and the waiter recommended a good brew. My husband enjoyed his pulled pork sandwich as well.

My husband and I ate here on Sat eve, on our way back home thru Farmington NM. We clearly picked the happening spot in town. The place was packed, with people coming in faster than they were leaving.
The food seemed to take a little while to come out, but that's because they were so busy! - and it was well worth the wait.
I had the Open Faced Bomb, with black beans as my side, which I would definitely have again. It's one of the meals I enjoyed the most during our road trip - and in a little town called Farmington, NM. Quite a surprise!
My husband had the smoked turkey sandwich and fries, which he enjoyed as well. The atmosphere was great and they had a good selection of beers from around the area. (I'm not a beer drinker, but my husband is).
The building was a pharmacy in its earlier life, so it was Cicero to see the preserved , and photos.
We will definitely eat here again next time we're driving thru.

Today’s experience here was unacceptable, my mom and I stopped in for lunch and ordered a burger and a wrap of some sort, we waited over 30 minutes for our food but I saw my burger sitting in their window for about 10 minutes then my moms order came out after, my fries were super cold and my moms tortilla wrap was cold also, which is weird since everything is supposed to be made to order, we sent the food back just to hear the lady in their kitchen saying “thats stupid” and “well obviously it’s cold it has lettuce and tomato in it” which we asked for no tomato btw but that wouldn’t explain why her onion rings/ meat and tortilla were barely warm. When we told the server that if the kitchen was so upset we could just take our ticket for our drinks and appetizer she tried to argue with “I’m sorry I just try to ignore them” (the kitchen). It’s understandable being understaffed but they weren’t even busy. :/

Food was ok...not very flavorful. Nice atmosphere. Husband ordered fish and chips, a bit too much crust which ruined taste of fish. The vegetable side order was swimming in butter and lacked flavor I had grilled cheese - a bit overgrilled. The potato salad had way too much mayo.
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a tourist attraction that offers scenic rides and a museum of railroad machinery. The railroad was built in the late 1990s to honor and share personal memories of how railroads shaped the nation. The tracks run through the San Juan National Forest, offering spectacular views to passengers on board. The locomotive used in this route is from the 1880s and has not been changed.
Last time I took this train ride was in around 1994, still the best historic train, in my opinion. If you're not up for a full day consider taking the bus up in the morning have the town to yourself until the trains arrive, and then ride the train home. The last time I rode the steam engine, this time we took the diesel electric. Both are wonderful, the steam engine now converted to oil would be an option for me again. With the coal it used to burn, there was so much soot we would have preferred it inside car way back when, but now an outside car would be perfect.
Mark Spencer — Google review
Really neat place! Small gift shop. Limited seating in the station, so if you require to sit frequently you may need to arrive early.
The train ride itself is very cool and nostalgic as it is a steam engine. Our particular train ride had light snow, but a heavy snow the night before. So the scenery looked absolutely astounding.
They serve refreshments and food. But also encourage you to bring your own. Masks are required however people wearing them may be hit or miss.

We went way out of our way to add this train trip to our itinerary. I paddled the Upper Animas in 2001 and knew how beautiful this trip is. I slept on tickets so we ended up doing the Cascade Canyon trip in a gondola car (the only way to go, IMO). It turned out great! It was amazingly beautiful and I enjoyed our hour long excursion by the river much more than I would have spending three hours in Silverton. YMMV. Conductors were friendly, knowledgeable and very informative. Allow time to visit the museum on-site in Durango. It is packed with cool stuff. Absolutely buy tickets in advance for weekends in the busy season.

Fun train ride, we did the train both directions, I would say only go one direction! And take the bus back. It's 3 1/2 hours each way, beautiful views of the river gorge and river and mountains

Our family had the opportunity to ride the train on the Cascade Canyon Excursion while we were there for Labor Day! All I can say really is WOW!! We had debated if we thought it would be worth the cost when we were planning the trip out to Durango and it definitely was!
We chose the open air gondola and it was super nice. Being able to take in the fresh air was great! We had read elsewhere to pack layers for warmth and we likely overpacked to make sure we didn’t freeze! Having blankets, hats, jackets, and such was great for the first part of the morning.
We were able to see the view from both sides, because the train turns around, which was super nice. The views were incredible!! The stop in Cascade Canyon was very nice as well!
Best suggestion would be to bring lunch! The snack/food car often had long lines which took away from your ability to sit and enjoy! We were glad we’d packed our lunch! The 5 hour train ride was perfect for our family. We had two babies with us and they did great, but we’re definitely done by the end of the day. I would totally recommend this trip to anyone and especially those with kiddos!!

I can't say anything bad about this trip. We booked a seat in the coach car (enclosed) which was probably for the best because it rained at times and we were sitting pretty inside while others on the open air cars were getting soaked. If you have an entire day to devote to this tour, do it.

We took the train from Durango to Silverton and back. What an amazing experience. A must for anyone traveling to Durango.
If I had any complaints is that the stop at Silverton felt a bit short. The two hours there seem to have flown by.
But the views, during the entire ride were beautiful. The train rides alongside the Animas river the entire way, which makes for some picturesque views.
We already can’t wait to do it again.

Had first class seats and the last car in the train. We were able to go outside to enjoy the scenery and take pictures. Issac was a great attendant. Price for alcoholic drinks were very reasonable. Amazing ride to and from.

The bus ride up to Silverton and Steam Train ride back to Durango was absolutely awesome. We got to see the scenery from the road and the train. Amazing staff working there. I enjoyed the experience. This whole experience was worth every penny. I cannot stress how much fun this was. If you are traveling or you are a local you have to go. The scenery is unreal.

Beautiful scenery, great hosts aboard the train, very informative conversations with the tour guides on the train. The price was more than expected but enjoyed the ride. It was fun to be able to ride on a narrow rail road that was old and pretty much original. We reserved on line and did have to wait.

Great family adventure. Friendly staff and splendid sights. We will be back to take the Durango to Silverton trip. Don't forget to visit the museum at the end of the train ride. The model trains in there were really awesome to say the least. The creator payed attention to detail. We bought our tickets online. No waiting in line. We arrived, parked and walked right over to the train.

We had a blast! The train was perfect, the weather was exactly what we hoped it'd be like, and the staff were awesome, too. Silverton citizens treated us like family and we highly recommend Lone Spur Cafe. Live piano music and delicious food.

This is a super cool way to see some of the best views in colorado. The steam engine was really cool. The trip is long but very fun. We had so much fun. The time in Silverton is short but you can see the town and get lunch. You do have an option to ride the bus back which can save time.

Really enjoyed this. It’s a long day to take the train ride up and back in one day. I would recommend taking the train up and staying the night and coming back the next day or taking a bus back instead of train. If you do take it on the way up, sit on the right side train on the way up and left side on the way down if going one way. But the train ride had some amazing views.

I love everything about the NGR. The employees are wonderful on both ends. I recommend a first class car so you have a train host that can point out all of the points of interest to you along the way including photo ops. This time i rode one way in first class and back on coach. Both fun but glad i had the host for the first leg of the trip. scenery is beautiful no matter where you look! I've done this ride 3 times now. once 45 years ago, once 30 years ago and again this week. Its consistent and always a joy. Recommend buying tickets as far in advance as possible.

Our Group rode the Durango-Silverton Railroad from Silverton to Durango. We were scheduled to board between 1:30 and 2 p.m. for the approximately three-and-a-half-hour ride to Durango. We were in an enclosed car with windows that could be raised depending on the weather. There were other types of car available including open air cars with a roof. I would recommend these if the weather were warm and no chance of rain. However, in cooler temperatures the enclosed cars would be your best option. Our Trip from Silverton to Durango was not sold out so we were free to move about the train and enjoy the scenery from other cars. There are snacks and beverages available for an additional charge. Keep in mind that this is a three-and-a-half-hour journey with no stops, other than one brief stop for water if you are travelling on the steam train. The trains’ top speed on the journey is about 22 miles per hour and only averages about 15 miles per hour for the entire journey. There were several small children on the journey that became bored and somewhat unruly. The length of time on the train should be considered when travelling with small children. The scenery along the route is amazing and the conductors and staff very informative about the sights that you are seeing along the way. The only drawback was the loud and unruly children. Other than that, the train ride itself was very nice and the scenery was magnificent.

What a magical experience with the glittery snow falling. We saw a bald eagle perched atop a dead tree and we're delighted there were no children in our car! The Alamosa cart in the Caboose was the best and we got to step out into the back and watch the train tracks go by. Can't wait to go back in the summer to get a new perspective! I wish I could remember the name of our hostess. She was absolutely incredible and a retired geologist with lots of fun facts to share. She also made us a very special mocha beverage that was delicious. The free museum was so delightful and I really enjoyed the Taxidermy as well. Especially getting to see all of the Taxidermy birds that usually never sit still long enough for you to look at them. There is a haunted cart in the museum and I went inside and felt nauseous for an hour after being in there. Very creepy!

Definitely worth doing. Beautiful scenery. The day I went they were still on the winter schedule which only went to Cascade Canyon, but you have great scenery the whole trip. Don't worry about which side of the train to get your seat, they turn the whole train around at the wye at Cascade Canyon. Pack a lunch, you have about an hour to eat at picnic tables, check the train out up close or do a little hiking. The train sounds 4 long whistle bursts 10 minutes before heading back to Durango.

This is a "bucket list" level activity for me and my family. My kids were happy and enjoyed it thoroughly. We did a polar express and cascade canyon trip week after Christmas (first time for the 2 younger ones). My kids smiles and compliments say all I need to hear. My oldest (son) is almost "to cool" to enjoy things like this, but he was very happy and just enjoying our time. My second oldest (my daughter) was happy and enjoyed things I didn't expect her to. The two younger boys were much easier to please, although the attention span is much shorter. This experience is a super reasonable cost for the return. I like to call this type of experience "organic" because nothing is manufactured it's just the same as when people first experienced a train ride 100 years ago. You can go on your first or 100th train ride and still be mesmerized. If in Durango or anywhere else, it's a sure thing.

I have taken this train 4 times in my life and planned my honeymoon to include a ride. We chose fall to see the amazing fall colors from an absolutely incredible vantage point. I simply love this train, the town and entire area. I can not rave enough about what a magical place and experience this train and area are. The bus ride was enjoyable to due to the friendly, funny and informative driver. We had an amazing lunch in Silverton and made some new friends who also were taking the train back. It’s absolutely amazing!!! Just FYI. After our Honeymoon we brought her kids and Parents back at Thanksgiving to see the Polar Express! Highly Highly recommend this train any and all times of the year.

It's fun for the first few minutes, until you realize you're spending half of the trip traveling through town to get to the mountains and back to the station. Some views were pretty, nothing we can't see at places we camp.
Luckily, our car had a good group of people so it wasn't loud, and people were considerate of others unlike the other cars. The seats were OK, got uncomfortable towards the end. The restrooms were pretty clean.
The concession options weren't bad. Pretty standard menu; sodas, coffee, hot chocolate, cider, options for alcohol (beer and cocktails), buttered popcorn, chips, candy, hot dog. Customer service was awful and unorganized.
The stop in Cascade Canyon was exactly like another reviewer said, a random picnic area by the river. Nothing special.
I'm glad we experienced it, but I would never ride again. I couldn't imagine how long and frankly, boring, especially for children, it would be, going the entire way to Silverton and back, and paying that price 🤷🏻♀️ lots of people napping on the way back.
J. — Google review
We went on this not knowing what to expect and it was spectacular. Going in the depth of winter, we got up close and personal views of the mountains no one except crazy mountain climbers may ever get to see.
As good as the pics on the website look, they really don't do it justice. Have included a few on here to try and give you a sense of the terrain you are looking for. Best part, you do it in old railroading comfort and style, as fancy as you like it with hot drinks and refreshments available. Would def recommend again
This Durango museum teaches visitors about the local wildlife, with exhibits on fish hatcheries and wildlife. It is a great place for adults and children to interact with the animals. The museum is free for everyone to visit.
It is a cool little museum that shows all of the wildlife in the area and it also had a fish hatchery, that you could buy food to feed them. It is free, but they do have a donation box. It is also next to the river and trails.

A wonderful place to see what a fish hatchery is and learn about the wildlife in the area. A nice stroll across the bridge is also a great way to see the river. Definitely worth stopping in. A note to remember is it along the river and you have to look for the driveway into the museum as it is not clearly marked.

The museum is still closed to the public (possibly opening Fall 2021)but the fish hatchery is open and the raceways are full of trout! One of my favorite go-to's for a quick nature activity with the kids. Be sure to bring some quarters and feed the fish.

Lovely little Nature center AND fish hatchery with opportunities to feed the baby trout (hard to explain how cool this was, it was actually a really neat experience if you're into these type of things).
As of July 2022, the museum was open to the public. We had a great time feeding the baby trout at the hatchery and then enjoying the displays at the museum. The museum is quite petite, maybe think more "nature center" than full scale natural history museum? The staff are super friendly, can exchange dollar bills for quarters and also have sandwich bags to help coral the fish food! (You can also bring little baggies or little containers to help collect fish food b/c the machines dispense a LOT at one time... hard for little hands to collect). My kids REALLY liked the museum and their hands on activities!
VERY SUN EXPOSED - bring hats, sunscreen, etc and lots of water. The riverside sites just next door are a great way to cool off and have a picnic!

A small museum with some cool animal mounts (my personal favorite was the golden eagle). The staff was friendly and helpful. The adjacent fish hatchery was a cool experience even though all you get to see are the raceways. When we were there, you could see the fish jumping and trying to swim "upstream."

This place may seem tacky and not as much in a big scale of things to see, but however there's much to learn in Durango in general. Just visiting here makes you feel like you time traveled in the past. There are 15 Acres of land here and there's much to learn.

Very cool place to stop in for a few minutes. They have a bunch of really cool taxidermy animals that are great to look at. They also have a nice little video about the fish hatchery. The staff was super nice and friendly. The museum is free so if you find yourself in the area I’d recommend checking it out.
The Durango Downtown Inn is a hotel located in Durango, Colorado with an indoor swimming pool and business center. Rooms have high-speed internet access and coffeemakers.
Our entire stay was great. Prices were reasonable, and every interaction with staff was exceptional. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the location is perfect. We're local and have stayed here a few times over the years, usually because we just want a night in town, but this time was due to a broken water pump from the last freeze. After explaining the situation (when we called to make a reservation), the manager made every effort to make sure we were taken care of for a couple of days. This was probably our best experience with this hotel, and we'll definitely stay here again-

Very disappointed considering the money you pay for these rooms. They need updating and maintenance badly. Rooms smell very old and musty. Hair dryer sparked and smoked when I tried to use. Plugs were are all old and loose wouldn't hold chargers in the socket. Gross stains on the carpet, no exhaust fan in the bathroom, the light switch for the bathroom had to be held and wiggled to stay on. The AC made a awful mildew smell in the room. We stayed 5 days and had cleaners come in mid week, they didn't changed out sheets and upon getting into bed didn't even make it just threw comforter up. Didn't replenish TP, Coffee, ice bucket liner or soap. When I found one to ask, she was eating her lunch in one of the rooms she was cleaning. This hotel has a great location and nice amenities, it's a shame it could be so nice. The pool could be really nice too, but they have all of the sliders in the room blocked so you can't open them, and the knob for the jets on the spa was broken off. Also, don't be fooled into paying river front view for 70 dollars more, you'll have cars and trees blocking your view. It's not really a river view. Front desk receptionist was very nice.

Stained carpet, bathroom door hits the toilet seat so you have to lift it to open/close the door. When we got back to our room after the Silverton train ride we found the door wasn't closed after the room was serviced. Fortunately nothing was missing. The ice machine on the ground floor wasn't working. We cut our stay short because it was so frustrating. The location is great but not worth staying here again.

The room is basic. It's old, no fridge, no microwave, feels damp, tub didn't drain well. That being said, the room was clean and the AC worked. It's super dog friendly as I saw several grassy areas for dogs to go potty and socialize. It's connected to an Applebee's. There a great walking path behind the hotel with views of the river and more grassy areas. Best part of the hotel is its location. Just a few minutes' walk to downtown restaurants, shops, the sky steps, and the Durango train. It was really awesome being so close to downtown and leaving the car in its parking spot the whole weekend.

The location was not worth the poor quality of the rooms or the terrible service from staff. We we’re told that one of our two rooms booked through Bookings.com could not be found in their system. They checked us in using one room from our reservation and then gave us another without telling us that the price would be different from our reservation. The next day we received a bill from booking.com that included a no-show charge, and a charge almost double the price as our reservation for the second room. When we brought this to the front desks attention they just kept saying it was booking.com mistake and they couldn’t do anything. However, they were able to go into their system and find the reservation for the second room a day later. The staff never took any responsibility for not checking their system throughly and we ended up with a bill significantly higher then what we had reserved. And this doesn’t even include how we had to get our room switched because the first one smelt strongly of animal urine! Incompetent and unprofessional front desk staff who have no concept of customer service, plus dingy and urine smelling rooms.

12/2021 They have a big sign by the highway that says "national forest information". Don't believe it. In my experience most forest service employees are friendly, helpful folks. Not here. The person I spoke with was without a doubt the rudest and most unhelpful person I have spoken with in recent memory. Must have been in a hurry for lunchtime to roll around or maybe she had gas pains, but she clearly didn't have any time or any inclination to help me. This place is not meant for interaction with the public - it seems to be an office for their own business and they obviously don't want to be bothered by pesky citizens and their questions. Don't waste your time, keep your happy disposition, and just drive right on by.

We had better success than some of the other reviewers. Though we had to wait and wait and then wait some more. We we able to get the maps we needed and advice on USFS road conditions. To the lady staff person who helped us: you were so right about the back roads in the Silverton area. I didn't blame the forest service when firewood permits couldn't be issued thanks to Trump and company, but now that they're sending chainsaws into wilderness areas, you wonder what the people in charge here are even for. It's a wilderness area for a reason. We have plenty of trees they can go in and cut down in non-wilderness areas and team up with their BLM buddies east of town to drill for oil, leave the wilderness areas alone. Whoever made this decision should be ashamed and move back to Ohio where they can trash nature all they want.

The Animas River, one of the few free-flowing rivers in Colorado, is named after the Spanish term for "river of lost souls." This name has two origin stories from Spanish exploration in the 16th century. The river offers various recreational activities such as camping (both paid and free), fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. The river's scenic location adds to its appeal. Visitors can experience a range of wildlife throughout all seasons while exploring this constantly changing and enduring body of water.
