How long is the drive from Two Harbors to Thunder Bay?
The direct drive from Two Harbors to Thunder Bay is 162 mi (260 km), and should have a drive time of 3 hrs 19 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Two Harbors to Thunder Bay, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with top places to visit like Iona's Beach Scientific & Natural Area (SNA) and Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, or the ever-popular Gooseberry Falls State Park.
The top stops along the way from Two Harbors to Thunder Bay (with short detours) are Gooseberry Falls State Park, Kakabeka Falls, and Fort William Historical Park. Other popular stops include Split Rock Lighthouse, Judge C.R. Magney State Park, and Grand Portage National Monument.
Gooseberry Falls State Park is a vast 1,682-acre park boasting stunning waterfalls and various wildlife. Visitors can explore campgrounds, trails, and picnic areas while learning about the area's history at the interpretive center/museum/gift shop. The paved walkway provides an excellent view of the magnificent waterfalls. Nearby restaurants with unique names like Crooked Spoon and Devil Track Resort cater to group dining needs.
Stunning! I’ve been to Gooseberry Falls many times and every time I am just blown away at how beautiful it is. I’ve seen the falls at different times of the year and keep in mind that sometimes there is much more water then other times. But even when the water is low, it’s still pretty. There’s other areas you can walk to and another waterfall too nearby. The best part? It’s just a short walk from the parking lot! This is nice when you’re traveling with someone who can’t walk too much. You do have to walk more to get to other areas but to see the main waterfall is not far. There are stairs as well so keep that in mind. There’s also nice restrooms and a very sweet gift shop inside with a mini museum which is fun for kids and adults. The worst part? I hope you have a lot of phone storage because you won’t be able to stop taking pictures! Now, a side note, the falls when it’s at its max is very loud. This isn’t a problem for me but can be for others who are sensitive to noise. We also try to find times to go when it’s not super busy and full of people.

We had great weather to enjoy the scenery. There are quite a few steps, but the trail around the falls levels out the ascent along the way so it is very hikeable.

Love this place, very peaceful with plenty to take in. 3 waterfalls. Tip, middle, lower. Was there a couple weeks ago, return in a couple days for the weekend again. Need to scoop out some more of the camp grounds we hope to stay at in July 2024. Can't wait

This place is so freaking beautiful. So many waterfalls to enjoy. We only had a couple of hours to spend - So we did the trail that takes you to the Upper and Lower falls. It is very close to the visitor center, so you can actually go back if you don’t want to do the loop. We did the loop and it was fun to see the falls from all sides. Breathtaking views.

My spouse and I were pleasantly surprised to find so many folks visiting Gooseberry Falls on a cold October morning. Just goes to show the lure of this state park!
Excellent trails and an overall fun experience to walk around the river and the surrounding paths and campground. Parking at the visitor center is also free. Great for my dog as well. Highly recommend!
Ronald Dixon — Google review
Fairly short hike to an amazing place!! I can spend hours and enjoy the fall area. We went under the fall , we swam , we hiked all the way down , followed the path, and unlocked more nature's beauty. Bring towels, bug spray, and water shoes for sure.
Sera — Google review
Such a beautiful place. This was my first time here even though I have always lived in Minnesota there is so much to see. This is a state park to spend a lot of time exploring and hiking. And I would highly recommend finding a place to camp to get the full enjoyment of the park and wild life.
Tony Jaroscak — Google review
This is such a great park! The falls are beautiful any time of year. It's a really quick walk to the waterfalls from the parking lot, and most of the main walkways are paved. The visitor center is nice and the restrooms are clean and convenient. I always stop here any time I'm up visiting the North Shore.
Alexandra Hanson — Google review
This was the best state park I visited in Minnesota. We spent the whole week touring state parks along highway 61 from Duluth to Thunderbay and this was by far the best.
The falls were gushing which made for a Kodak moment after every turn. Make sure you have proper footwear because the trail can get steep and muddy at some places.
The whole falls loop was around a mile and pretty easy.
Jack Lansford — Google review
Wow! I love this place so much. The walk is short and they've got a great shop with really some of the nicest shirts and sweatshirts and t-shirts and trinkets I have ever seen. It was my birthday so my husband bought me a beautiful rust color North shore sweatshirt and a burgundy gooseberry Falls sweater that was stunning and I've gotten compliments on it since. We walked all around the falls got in 17,000 steps It is beautiful. You can walk as hard and long as you want but plan on taking a lot of pictures. There was a lot of people there so you have to take your time and be patient to get pictures without a lot of other people in the background. I highly recommend it I would love to come back here once every few years as it is beautiful and different in each time of the year. The last time we were here my son was in UMD and it was winter. Totally different experience this time. I will say the waterfalls are much more beautiful this time of year They get rusty color from the leaves in early winter.
Kim K — Google review
I've been going to Gooseberry for decade's. And I really did love it before all the parking and designed paths. There were way less people. However, I appreciate what has been done to make it more family friendly. And more accessible. It is very clean and very well manicured. And a must visit for first timers. The path up and down to the lake is about 3.5 miles. Easy hiking.
Paul Economon — Google review
Goosebury falls is worth the stop if you want to easily see some falls that are very easy to access. There's only a short walk on a paved path to be able to reach views of the upper and middle falls. We saw people of all ages throughout the park. There is a trail that goes all around the falls to have some views from above, but requires a bit of a hike.
Rachel Menon — Google review
We were there on a Saturday afternoon and it was beautiful. The parking lot was fairly full but despite the number of people it was still a great experience. Everyone was getting a chance to get their pictures and play and climb on what they wanted. The trails were great. We started at the upper falls and them worked our way back down. It was extremely enjoyable for the whole family and we can even bring Grandpa and his cane back with us.
Erin Murray — Google review
Fantastic State Park! So much to do here, for all levels of ability. The falls are in easy walking distance on east paved paths near visitor center. But their are other falls deeper in the park for those that have more time and want to explore further. Beautiful trails follow the water, fairly easy to navigate. But further in you want good hiking shoes and note it is uneven ground with lots of tree roots and stones. But still easy and worth it. This park also links up to the Superior Trail as well. Dogs are welcomed and there were a decent amount when we were there, all leashed of course. Visitor center with bathrooms and plenty of parking. It can get a little crowded by the falls, but becomes nice and quiet as you venture out on trail.
Elizabeth Kirwan — Google review
I love this state park! It has some beautiful trails and gorgeous falls. It’s a great place for kids, as it’s an easy walk to the falls, and they love climbing up the stairs and seeing the water coursing through the creeks and down the slopes. It has a wonderful gift shop as well, with some unique items and fun books. And of course it’s a beautiful drive to get here.
Mardee Sherman — Google review
Beautiful state park. The falls are gorgeous. The walking paths are fun and easily accessible. You can walk on either side of the falls. The views are breathtaking. A definite must-see while in northern Minnesota
Lisa Carmichael — Google review
Gooseberry Falls State Park is definitely place to explore. Quiet large area of hiking, walking, bicycling, dog walking. Lots of trees, plants and flowers. Beautiful waterfalls on different levels. We have been several times in this park. This place is awesome.
Maximus Gladiator — Google review
This is a great place! Easy to get to lots of little hikes that you can do. You can pretty much go wherever you want on these gorgeous falls. I love that there is no restrictions. You can wherever or climb wherever in this gorgeous area. There are about 45 really good waterfalls right around this area within a short hike.
Jared Lesueur — Google review
First time visiting in winter. The paths and especially the stairs are tricky to navigate with snow on them. Highly recommend wearing traction-increasing footwear
A great stop along the north shore! Make sure to follow the trail to the actual beach and not just check out the kayak launch area although that is nice as well. There are some port-a-potties available.
Autumn Mollet — Google review
The pink beach was cool but we did not hear it song as they say. It is also all big rocks, no sand at all. The water was so clear. I was able to walk to it with my walker all the way through the trail until we got to the actually beach. The rocks are not handicap friendly.
Carrie Theisen — Google review
Great beach. Make sure you wear water shoes. The rocks can hurt your bare feet. Great place to relax and have a picnic. Don't forget to make sculptures out if the pink stones.
Michael B. — Google review
The sight of infinite waters of Lake superior, the rustling of pebbles amidst the waves and beautiful red pebbles create a unique experience. I'll definitely recommend a stop here along the north shore drive.
Sendhilkumar Alalasundaram — Google review
Pink beach with a few blue ones. The rocks make a strange sound when walking on them. Beautiful beach to spend the afternoon.
Sarah — Google review
This was a very inspiring place to visit. It is an easy exit to miss as it comes up fast. It is definitely worth the little hike to get back to the beach! It had just rained the day before we arrived and the trail was muddy but we persevered. Wear proper footwear and enjoy the views!
Shane Whalen — Google review
Beautiful beach that is much less busy than others in the area. The pink rocks are interesting and the rocky outcropping is beautiful! The water here often looks turquoise like the ocean! It’s a favorite stop for our family!
Heather Busch — Google review
It's really cool. A great place to enjoy nature, beach, stones/rocks, waves,....
Sara Huynh — Google review
This was such a beautiful and peaceful beach. You need to walk a short way on paved and unpaved trails to get to the beach. It was so quiet when we went in the morning as we were the only people there. The beach is full of medium sized rocks so wear hiking shoes.
Laura Potter — Google review
Rocks as far as the eye can see. We got some great photos. But not great for rock hunting. You can't keep them if you can even find good ones.
Karina Larson — Google review
Also known as "Pink Beach," this place was pretty cool. If you are sun seeking, go here. There is not much for shade. The big rocks on the beach are not easy to walk on but the vast display of large smooth pink stones is worth checking out. The waters are crystal clear. So pristine. We found a Crack in the rock face that had a water pool inside and an access to the other side of the cliff to the lake. It was fun to explore. Waters get deep pretty quick, so bring a life jacket for the Littles.
Tim Schmidt — Google review
Iona Beach offers lovely trails and a beautiful rocky shoreline. Though thick swarms of gnats were present during my visit, the natural beauty of the area made up for it. Visitors should note that it's a research area, and taking rocks is prohibited. A great spot for nature lovers, but be mindful of the rules.
Sarah Mathre — Google review
Beautiful "Pink Beach" as the locals refer to Iona's. Nice parking area with section of the paved Gitchi Gami State Trail connected, walk down this to the dirt path, remember to use the shoe scrubber or wash your shoe soles with your water bottle before heading down to the beach. As you get closer the trail will change to rocks. Take as many photos and videos as you want but leave the rocks alone. Listen to the sounds they make as you walk and as they are washed by the waves. The edge of the beach has Raspberry bushes and many other native berries and wild Hazel nuts, you are in a wilderness area and might see birds, squirrels, bears etc feeding if you are at a low visitor volume time of the day. Deer also come down to drink at the Lake. The color of the rocks and beach scene changes depending on the weather and lighting. I enjoyed watching the bumblebees foraging in the wildflowers on the little bluff and some of the lake birds during my shirt visit this week. Make sure to have good walking shoes as it's a very uneven surface, slippery if wet and as temps drop becomes ice covered pretty easily. There is an old iron bridge further up the paved trail that gives a good view of the beach. The trails would allow a wheel chair to get down to the beach in good weather but the rocks on the beach may be too much unless you have the bigger inflatable style action wheels. Just near the parking area is a marine dock for water access and sightseeing from our on the Lake looking back at the beach. The parking lot has memorial benches by the trail. It can be a nice picnic spot and place to burn off some energy with kids.
MN Kimberley — Google review
This beach is extremely rocky, steep, and a bit hard to walk on but also very pretty. Very few ppl were there the day we were there so it was a nice "pause" on our North Shore trip. The story behind the beach is lovely so stop in and pay tribute to Iona and the beach she loved enough to protect!
Mel K — Google review
We just walked the shoreline. Beautiful views, I added some photos. We had missed this beach on previous visits to the Northshore. Is certainly something to stop and see.
Sheryl H — Google review
Incredible beach! They say the rocks here are musical when the waves wash over them. I don't know about that, but there is a rice krispies sound which is nice. Relaxing. You wouldn't think that a bunch of rock could be comfortable but they aren't bad!

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
State park
Nature & Parks
Known for its historic lighthouse, this park boasts trails, lakefront campsites & a rocky beach.
8$ per person. Got to see the lighthouse up close, and the did the trail down to the beach and took some photos. The views were beautiful. The snow did make the walk up and down a bit hard. The wooden staircase to the historic site was closed for winter. Did not go all the way to Pebble beach, so cant comment on it.
Ajimon Thomas — Google review
Spent the weekend at shipwreck campground at split rock lighthouse. The campground is excellent. We appreciate the sites being spaced apart giving people some space to stretch out. Sites were more than big enough for our small camper and 2 cars. Shower house had plenty of hot water. Vault toilets were well kept and clean.
Scott Greymont — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous site. This is both a State Park and Historical site. You can gain entrance to them both at one location. The lighthouse site has a minimal entrance fee and worth it. The views are spectacular from up top and also from below. You can access shoreline from “old tram” trail which are stairs or walk a gentle slope trail down, which is the part of the State Park. You can access additional trails along the shore from there as well. This is a gorgeous site in any season, but obviously Fall is one of its more colorful times.
Elizabeth Kirwan — Google review
We only got the introductory tour but my sister and I loved it. There was a lot to learn about how the lighthouse was built, when it was built, and who maintained it. There was a movie as well and it was a gem. Overal, the view from the frozen lake was gorgeous and I memorialized every minute of it. I highly recommend a visit to this tourist destination, whenever time allows it.
Eliina Quante — Google review
Such a beautiful site, both the lighthouse and the surroundings. I've visited in all seasons. There is an admission fee most of the year, but it's free for a small window in the winter. The lighthouse is spectacular and I love viewing it from the shoreline below.
London Garry — Google review
Beautiful no matter what angle you are looking from. We had our dog with, so couldn't go on the historical grounds, but we enjoyed scampering over the rocks by the lakeside to get as close as possible for some good pics. Beautiful picnic areas, too!
Dawn Alberts — Google review
This is a pretty park with nice spots to sit next to the lake. The scenery is good. The camp spots were very nice and the facilities some of the best I’ve been i. For a state park. The showers were really nice and the camping spots surrounded by beautiful flowers.
Mitch K — Google review
Very cool place to visit. Loved how blue the water looked in some areas. You pay a small fee to walk and go see the lighthouse.

Great spot. Expensive to go in for a tour. Small in size. Excellent views from Pebble beach and around
Priyojit Ganguly (PG) — Google review
Officially known as the new Shipwreck Creek Campground at Split Rock State Park. , this Campground is about 5 minutes from the lighthouse and is seamlessly integrated into nature. This is one of the first campgrounds I've been to that didn't feel like the land was manipulated and overly stripped in some way, and a campground was set up. Here, it feels like they worked with the land to leave nature intact and it shows with ample green space and forest between each campsite. Shower facility and restrooms at the entrance are some of the nicest I've ever been to. Super clean but careful, no adjustable temperature, it's one button operation and the water was almost a little too hot for me but that's a nice problem to have. Even the many single door outhouses sporadically placed throughout the park are about as clean as can be and well maintained. Newly paved roads throughout the park with an abundance of paved bike trails from the campground leading to 15 additional miles of paved trails along the North Shore. If there is one negative it would be the lack of cell service or the ability to pick up any local TV stations on the antenna. That's not such a bad thing, though, if you really want to get away. I have Verizon and was able to use my phone a little bit but not for streaming too well. My wife has AT&T, and there was no signal. That's about the only negative we can think of. I would definitely go back.

This was a beautiful state park to visit. Even though we visited too late in the season to go to see the inside of the lighthouse, we were able to still hike down a little to see the view of the state park that is often in photographs or paintings. Quite stunning a vantage point! I think it is definitely worth visiting this state park in order to see Split Rock Lighthouse. Worth the drive from the cities! We went on a very windy day which resulted in huge waves.
Anne Towner — Google review
Love this State Park. The light house is awesome and the history and upkeep of the place is great.
Personally I think that it is the most picturesque lighthouse out there.
Visitor center staff are friendly and helpful.
There is much more I could say about it but just know it’s worth your time to visit!
Jared Little — Google review
The historical part of the park, the lighthouse & grounds, has always been a favorite. The tours are wonderful & very educational. There's also a new exhibit that wonderfully put together. I only wish we had spent more time there.
There are also hiking trails for everyone. We were able to take our kids on a few & there were no issues.
The new campground is amazing. There's plenty of space at each site. While they're all set up for electric, some are set up to also accommodate tent camping. Water & vault toilets are easily accessible. There's even an ADA site so everyone can enjoy what the area has to offer. Definitely going to be planning a trip back.
Alicia “Bosman” Erkenbrack — Google review
This place has always ignited my imagination. When we are in the area, we always stop. There are upcharge tours of the Keeper's Quarters, and even inside the tower tours. Many steps up to the light house.
Large grassy area at the bottom of the steps where those who want to rest a bit can also sit.
Easy parking, but then one walks a bit to the Visitors Center, which is where the restrooms are located.
The National Parks Pass works for the basic entrance to the park.

3755 Split Rock Lighthouse Rd, Two Harbors, MN 55616, USA
Guides dressed in period clothing offer tours of the Split Rock Lighthouse and keeper's home, showcasing aspects of 1920s life. The lighthouse was constructed after a devastating gale in 1905 caused numerous shipwrecks, and it has become one of Minnesota's most iconic landmarks since its opening in 1910. Today, the lighthouse has been restored to reflect its original appearance from the 1920s and features a historical museum.
8 dollars per person when I came in 2nd of April. I love this place, it's fascinating how the people lived and built at time. There is a little museum explain the story, a theatre with a movie explaining the origins, trails to walk around and the light house which you can enter but then you need to book in advance and it's a guided tour (cost extra too).
There is also a little shop to buy souvenir which is cute.
I love this place, but one tip, it's super windy up there in the lighthouse so be aware.
Marcia Terazzi Basso — Google review
Probably one of my new favorite places we’ve been! Admissions were very reasonable. Tour guides were well informed and had so many interesting things to talk about. Loved going to the house and touring there. The lighthouse was very neat as well. The whole history around this place was very interesting. Go here if you’re in the area and take the walk down to Pebble Beach to see the lighthouse from below. Definitely worth the view!
Maura L — Google review
Beautiful park, well worth the visit. You can walk up inside the lighthouse, see other historic buildings and exhibits as well as enjoying a spectacular view of Lake Superior. While there, enjoy the museum, nature walks and learn a lot of the history of the area.

Amazing drive on the way to split Rock, so beautiful. The museum part was very cool and informative. The staff was super knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The real magic happens when you walk out by the lighthouse! I can't even describe in words how beautiful the view is! Definitely going back. A must stop on the way is Betty's pies and of course Gooseberry falls. Have an amazing time 😁❤️

We went in January right when Duluth put a mandatory mask mandate in place. The lighthouse was closed but the views were amazing which is why we are giving it four stars. The learning center was informational.
Sean Dawson — Google review
Beautiful lighthouse to see, the lighthouse and state park (surrounding property) are two separate admissions. It cost $12 for adults to see and go inside the lighthouse and then the state park has a $7 day pass if you want to go to Pebble Beach or enjoy the lighthouse viewpoint from down the trail. It is cool to climb to the top of the lighthouse and to go through the lighthouse keepers home.
Brittany Savoie — Google review
If you are a lighthouse fan, a beach fan, a Lake Superior fan, enjoy a nice hike, you must visit Split Rock Lighthouse. We learned about the history of the lighthouse and it's keepers through the short video before our exploration of the property, and while in the keepers' home, the fog horn house, and around the property. There was a decent line to go up into the lighthouse itself, but we passed that up due to time constraints and instead took the leisurely hike down to Lake Superior to get some stunning photos of the light from that vantage point. Well worth a visit.
Sue Martindale — Google review
What a fun little stop along the pretty Minnesota coast!! Seeing the light house was pretty fun, but more so from a distance. The inside is very cool but it’s very cramped (understandably) so when there’s a lot of people it’s kind of hard to enjoy the inside, but there’s a walkway down to the water that has such a nice and fun view of the lighthouse, as well as a little porch with another great view! Me and my girlfriend are both very happy we made this stop and can’t wait to visit other historic lighthouses like this one.

Split Rock Lighthouse is such a fun and beautiful day adventure to take part in when you are up on the north shore of Lake Superior. It is not only beautiful, but it is a historic and educational sight seeing attraction. Taking the tour up into the Lighthouse is a great adventure. The views of the lake shore line from here are amazingly beautiful as well.

An early sunrise on the lighthouse edge.
I hope you enjoy my photo.
I wanted to capture the sun as it was level with the lighthouse top, and I had to be up in early in the darkest of morning to snap this photo.
This place has spectacular 360 degree views, and there is a nice beach spot below it.
Makes a great destination spot for photography and to enjoy oneself.

This place is very well maintained! Employees are super nice. It has an interesting story and it is well documented. They CHARGE for parking ($7) and to enter the lighthouse ($12) separately! View is pretty from up there. Overall it’s worth it.
They also let you in one of the families’ homes who use to take care of the lighthouse and they still have their old appliances!
Blanca MK — Google review
This is such a beautiful lighthouse. You can see it off the highway as you approach from the south. There is so much history here. They have a theater area where you can learn even more. There is a small museum area. The gift shop is nice. The staff is amazing. Bathrooms were very clean. We walked the grounds and went into the lighthouse. You can also go into the light keeper's house. There was a wonderful lady who could give you a lot of history about the house. You need to be able to climb stairs to get up to the lighthouse. We did not see any ramps. If you can't climb stairs, you can go to the inside museum and around the grounds below the lighthouse. It is definitely worth the stop. The cost was reasonable.
Donna Smith — Google review
First time touring the Lighthouse and we are really glad we did. As a family of 5 it was affordable and an experience our kids enjoyed as well. If we did it again we would watch the video before going up to the lighthouse. Not as much walking or steps as we expected there to be. The tour guides were very helpful in answering any questions we had. We enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to everyone thinking of checking it out.
Kelcie Quiel — Google review
Split Rock Lighthouse is a must-visit for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. There is $12 entrance fee to offer self guided tours of the grounds and lighthouse, but don't let that turn you away. Prior to seeing the lighthouse, they offer a short video explaining the history. There are well-informed staff at each part of the attraction to answer questions and offer information about the lighthouse as well. The lighthouse itself is a short walk from the main building, and they allow visitors to walk up to the top and tour the original lighthouse Keeper's home with the pass. The views of Lake Superior are incredible!
Rachel Menon — Google review
What an experience!!! Park is beautifully maintained. There was an entrance fee, but we'll worth it. Park is relatively large. You'll walk through the main building which has a gift shop right behind. There are restrooms inside. Once you pay you can check out the little museum or go straight to the lighthouse. There's a older house beforehand worth a walk through. Climb a few stairs and you'll be inside the lighthouse which requires another 33 flight of stairs to the top. Wonderful experience, if you love lighthouses, make sure you stop

Beautifully kept light house with amazing history and very talented guides to help you to understand the facilities. The story about the light house is very well preserved with great photos and pieces. The views are amazing and the so well kept that you get a great feel for what it might of been like to stay there. This is a definite must see on the North Shore!
Jim Burgraff — Google review
This place is great, especially if you love learning about history. There is an entry fee, but it is affordable and absolutely worth it in my opinion. I also appreciated that they were open until 6PM on a weekday! I would say you can cover everything in about 1 hour, maybe a little longer if you want to spend more time or if you have kids.
The lighthouse and the keeper's house are beautifully restored with lots of informative and interesting reads. Also plenty of staff around that are very nice, helpful and well-informed.
The interior museum was great as well. There's a short movie that runs every 10-20 minutes. The gift shop is about what you'd expect, but I also appreciated they had a collection of artwork from local artists available for purchase.
And I almost forgot to mention the stunning views of Lake Superior!
I'd definitely recommend making a stop here if you're nearby and have an hour to kill. It's right off the highway and very convenient.
Noel Hanson — Google review
Lots of history about the property, original lighthouse keeper, and the lighthouse itself. There are several trails you can hike and get some great distant views of the lighthouse. Walk a little further (.3 miles) and the trails takes you to a beach where you can also view the lighthouse.
Dan Bell — Google review
A worthwhile trip up the North Shore, the site not only has really well maintained grounds but also the actual historic structure itself is really well cared for. They have done a really good job in not only the historic preservation front but also in interpretation of the site itself, moreso the lives of the people that worked there. An extremely professional and relatively "modern" museum in how it presents itself.
A $12 admission price is a steal to go see a place like this.
Vito S. Bortolotti — Google review
A staple of the North Shore, Split Rock is a must see for all those who have never experienced it. The history of the site coupled with the spectacular views and well maintained trails (paved and non-paved) allow for all ages and physical capabilities to experience the park.
Carissa Baumeister — Google review
Really great views and great history throughout. There's a lot of information and visuals to make it fun for all ages. There are guided tours that go on as well if you want a more in depth style of visit, but there's a theater that shows a good overview if that's more your speed.
Jordan A — Google review
100% worth the stop. Small fee to gain access to all the historical grounds. Take the time to watch the short 13 minute video before heading outside. Super informative! You're able to climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse to see the light. The views are astounding everywhere you turn. Definitely take advantage and walk down every path you can. I also recommend the hilly walk down to the shore for amazing pictures. Be adventurous and take the tram stairs back up, it's a work out but there are several resting platforms on the way up!
KJ Goldstein — Google review
Very beautifully bucolic setting with plenty of informed staff. The grounds are kept immaculate and well marked. There is a small museum on-site as well. There are some steps and hill climbing, and you'll have a majestic view of Lake Superior.

An AWESOME experience! Our guide Molly was fantastic. We all felt safe and taken care of under her leadership. We did the 3 day trip, and now that I know what to expect I would do a longer trip next time because it was over before we knew it. The food was great and there was always more than enough to eat. We lucked out with great weather. And the landscapes were absolutely beautiful! I will be back for a longer trip next time!

Just Wow!!! We took a kayaking tour yesterday kit of Washburn with a different outfitter that took us to Red Cliff and Purple cave. We were so disappointed that we decided that we'd try again today with an outfitter that took off out of Meyers beach. Lost Creek was top notch from the start! They made sure we were outfitted correctly, provided a wet suit and a dry bag, and safe keeping for your keys. Mathias and Danny were our guides and they were friendly and knowledgeable - not just about kayaking but about the geological formations as well! We had a great group kayaking with us and water conditions cooperated letting us get in and out of all the cool spots. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. THIS WAS SUPERB!!

I was a solo traveler and they paired me up with another solo adventurer; so we were both able to sign up for the tandem kayak sea caves tour that day. We did the 11am sea caves tour - which went until mid afternoon. Ben was our guide. Wet suits were included with the kayak rental. Good safety protocols were reviewed, along with paddling instruction, prior to even getting in the water. This was the best day trip and highly worth it - the scenery was breathtaking and the experience was amazing. My only suggestion is that it would have been nice if our guide had a camera and took pictures of us in our kayaks on the water. That would have been a nice service to provide/include. I have pics of the scenery, but none of me in my kayak.
Highly recommend this day trip if you are vacationing in the area.

Our original tour to the sea caves had to be changed due to the bad weather and rough waves out on Lake Superior that had passed through the day before. They offered an alternate trip to guests that was through a slough leading up to Lake Superior. Everyone else on the original trip rescheduled to another day, our trip plans didn't allow for this so we went on the alternate trip and my friend and I ended up being the only two choosing this route, so we got a private tour with our guide, Ben. This was awesome being the only two and still a fun trip on peaceful, calm waters and we got to see a lot of ecology and learn more about the area and environment. Ben was a great guide and it was fun getting to know him as well! Would recommend this outfitter to anyone. We will be back some day again soon to experience the caves!

Toured with Megan and Mathias and they were great. Aside from having to pump the water out of the kayak 8 times during our half day trip, it was a great time! Not sure where the water kept entering from but I hope the company can locate the issue. Thank goodness Megan had a pump or it would’ve taken forever with my water bottle. Thankfully the water only hit me and not my other two paddlers. While I typically stay dry when paddling it was an interesting experience and makes for a great story. Beautiful sights and a beautiful day. The leaky kayak didn’t deter me and would go again in the future should I find myself in the area. Definitely recommend!

It was a great trip! We were able to go thru so many caves and the guides were excellent & patient. I was usually the last and River always waited for me. Had to take so many photos!

Our experience with Megan and Matthew as our guides was INCREDIBLE!! We LOVED everything about our kayak adventure! The sights were breathtaking, I took TONS of pictures! We felt safe and our guides were informative and knowledgeable. If you have the opportunity to do this, YOU MUST❤️

Mike was an awesome guide. He took care of us by carrying our kayaks and pushing us off the beach. He was knowledgeable and funny. He took our photo for our 30 year anniversary photo. He ordered perfect weather and a calm lake so we could explore mouse hole cave. The caves were beautiful and just the right distance on the 3 1/2 hour tour.

This has been on my bucket list for awhile. Ben and Cali were amazing guides! Went over guidelines and rules efficiently to get us out on the water but also so first timers knew what they were doing and how to paddle correctly. They pointed out the names of structures and were fun people to talk to. This company had everything and was very organized. The wet suits, life vests, and kayak skirts were all in great condition. The kayaks and paddles were comfortable to use. Was an amazing day. Will definitely come again!

My wife and I had a wonderful time with Danny! It was a small group - us and one other person. They provided wet suits, dry bags, and lunch for Sand Island. We hiked on a boardwalk to the lighthouse and decided to do the quick tour. The winds were fairly consistent, which made paddling back a little easier. The other person on our tour did the Sea Caves the day before with perfect weather and planned to do one more tour tomorrow. We would highly recommend the Sand Island tour, Danny, and Lost Creek. It was a great day of kayaking!

Awesome experience from before we even arrived to the time we got back! We emailed them a few days before with some questions and they answered right away. Arrival and check in were quick and easy. Very professional, you can tell they put a lot of time and attention into what they do and have clearly thought of everything, including a safe spot on land for everyone's car keys!
The actual kayaking trip was incredibly beautiful and a lot of fun! The weather was gorgeous. We had never paddled in a sea kayak before, but learned the basics pretty quickly from our guides, Talia and Haydn who were the BEST! They were friendly, informative, helpful, and genuinely great people to get to spend a few hours on the water with and learn from.
The half day trip felt like it was the perfect amount of time for us and our daughter, we got to see quite a bit without it tiring us out too much. We highly recommend Lost Creek Adventures! We would love to come back someday in the future and do an overnight trip when our daughter is a little older.
Thanks so much to your wonderful team! :) Hope everyone has a safe and fun summer!

Absolutely amazing kayaking day-trip. Our guides were River and Hunter. They were so knowledgeable, kind, and fun! Our group varied in skills but they made sure no one was left behind or excluded. My arms are killing me but I'd go again in a second. I absolutely reccomend.
And if River suggests you stop at a random well for water? Do it! She was right, randomly delicious water.

Had a great family time (w/adult children) kayaking. Ajay and Mark were great tour guides and very friendly. They also had some corny jokes which made it fun when we were about ready to give up! 🤪 They took good care of us and genuinely seemed to care about our comfort and safety! Highly recommend. You also get some good practice and tips before actually getting in the water. Very helpful on the water if you have a moment of struggle. Beautiful scenery and facts/history about the area to learn about on the tour.

Highly recommend! Staff are very friendly. Our initial booking had to be canceled due to wind, but they were able to book us for the next day. Otis was our travel guide, and he was amazing! Super funny and down to earth. He definitely made everyone that was in our group feel safe. The cliffs were an awesome sight and Otis knew many details and the history surrounding them! Another bucket list item check off!
We went out on the sea cave tour with Mike and the tour was awesome!!! We wanted to kayak the sea caves but given our laziness and the coldish weather we decided to take a boat instead given the minimal price difference. Mike was great, a local, and knows a lot about the area and the cave formations! Plus you can bring your own food and beverage on the trip which is a huge plus!!!! (No glass, nothing red, and must close.) Thanks so much Mike for running a boat touring business - a true gem of a local experience, a must!

This was an excellent experience. The reservation process was so easy. There is a cute gift shop to shop while waiting for our boat tour. They had great jewelry options at really good prices; there were T-shirts, candles and all kinds of variety. I would make a trip to this little store even if I weren't going on a boat ride. I plan to do a little gift shopping before leaving the area. I was a little nervous about being on a boat, Captain Mike made us feel totally safe. He shared all kinds of history about the area. He was able to give us a ton of information about rock formations, plants and Lake Superior. It is obvious that he loves his job and loves the area. He was able to get the boat right into the caves. Mike even pointed out some of the best photo opportunities. I am so glad we didn't choose one of the big companies and big tour options. I would recommend this tour and this tour company, specifically, to anyone.
Don't miss this one!

We took the mainland sea cave tour with Captain Mike, and are very glad we did. He exceeded our expectations with his friendly, knowledgeable, and thoughtful guidance. This is definitely the way to see sea caves in the Apostle Islands, especially if you aren't inclined to paddle a sea kayak a few miles. Book online in advance so you won't be disappointed.

Mike was a phenomenal "Captain" of our sea caves tour. He was professional, courteous , knowledgeable and a true local. What we admired about Mike was that he took the time to really show us the sea caves even when it required waiting for 15 minutes for the kayakers to pass by. This was almost like a private tour. Mike was a great company to have.
This tour really made our apostle islands tour a trip to remember.
I would be coming back for another island tour.
I am so glad we did not take the tour with the "big" guys

Excellent tour of the vast amount of sea caves also known as the ice caves in winter. Captain Mike (who grew up in the area)
had a great amount of knowledge of the caves, apostle Islands and Lake Superior.

Super friendly, very caring, awesome group of people. Highly recommended Good Earth!!
Our story....
My boyfriend and myself went to Bayfield to pay for a water taxi from the cruise service there to take us to Devil's Island and they had no captains available to take us to Devil's where we had a booked campsite for that night. One lady for the cruise service didn't even try to find us a captain. One girl finally gave us a list of local places that might work and she said Good Earth might be our best bet.
My boyfriend called them and Mike answered. He was able to take us out to Devil's no problem. He was even nice enough to give us a history lesson of the islands on our way out. And quiz me on which island was which so we wouldn't get lost. Although I memorized the islands we were going to it still helped us a lot.
They are also very caring, he was very concerned with our trip. We were going from Devil's Island to Oak Island to Sand Island then back to the mainland (over 30miles of kayaking total) in a course of three days. He asked us to write down our itinerary and when we were planning on being back and also to call him once our journey was over. If not, he was going to send the coast guard out for us. Which is a very comforting feeling.
I highly recommend Good Earth. They're very concerned about the people they help.
Thank you Mike for taking us out to Devil's islands as quickly as you could. We had a great journey because of you.

Hiked the sea caves overlook trail at Meyers Beach on a beautiful February day. A lot of the trail is solid wood planks. One way is almost 2 miles that includes going up and down inclines. They have strategically placed benches for a break to enjoy the woods.

This is an excellent place to spend a weekend. Kayaking, picnic, hiking, sea caves, and one of the most well groomed trails I've ever got to partake in. Parking is very very limited so get there early or prepare to park far away. Kayak and boat launch here. Safety first.
We not only kayaked but got to hike these trails. Dog friendlyand very people.
When you come to this place it's strictly for the nature. Enjoy it and leave nothing but ripples, and footprints.

Worth the hike!! The views looking from the top down onto the sea caves was amazing. Saw many kayaks entering the caves. Did this hike in the morning and then did the island sunset cruise. I am a photo person and I felt I had many more great photo ops vs. on the boat. $5 parking fee at the park. Great way to relax at the end of the day.

Took the sea caves overlook trail with my 2 greyhounds. This is primarily a forest trail until you get close to the sea caves. The trail consists mainly of 2 plank boardwalks and steps. So waterproofed hiking boots are a must as sometimes you have to step off the trail to let people pass. The forest is lush and in mid-June blue bead lillies and bunchberry are in bloom. Bug repellent is definitely required, and the dampness of the forest raises the humidity. The first mile is easy, but then you need to descend into 6 to 7 steep gullies and this raises the ease of the hike to moderate. Muddy creeks generally meet you at the bottom before you climb back out. Here steps are uneven and eroded with exposed tree roots becoming a hazard. If you are unsure of foot you will definitely need walking poles (or consider giving the trail a miss). Note to multi-dog owners, having 2 leashed large dogs increased the difficulty significantly on this section. On the plus side these gullies are not deep (15-25 feet elevation change). The main sea cave is impressive from above, with gapping holes in the roof that allow you to look down into it. There is a nice bench to sit on to contemplate Lake Superior. Starting out before 6 am on a weekday we saw no-one until we were half way back so a good time to go to avoid crowds. The last group I encountered had just seen a black bear on the trail quite close to the car park. Although I personally did not see it as we finished the hike, I thought I better let the ranger know there was a bear close by. When I mentioned the bear was gone when we walked through, he made my day by replying "bummer". His first thought was that we had missed out on the pleasure of seeing a wild bear. Apparently bears are sighted fairly regularly in the vicinity but run when encountering people.

We were very lucky to kayak on Saturday with fog. This made the Sea Caves adventure incredible. Jurassic Park vibes!!! We did tandem kayaking and went through the Caves.
The next day we hiked the trail above the Sea Caves in a beautiful sunny day. The water was so blue and we stopped at the view points to take pictures and make really good memories!
What a fantastic weekend. Really worth the drive to Bayfield for an extended long weekend.

We went to hike - and we are not super athletic. It’s a US Park service site; parking was $5 per car (fee based on length). Round trip we covered about 5 miles, but it was well worth it. The scenery is beautiful!! Not really suitable for young kids or anyone with unsure footing. There’s a few places where the trail has been washed out, and up and down gullies takes some effort! But the beauty is worth it!

This is truly a hidden gem located in Bayfield, WI. The trail the sea caves is almost 5 miles in and back. The hike is easy to moderate but well worth it when you get to the caves. The trail is well marked. The first half is lined with a boardwalk however many of the wooden planks are loose so please be careful. The other half of the trail is wooded but Make sure you wear shoes with a good some as there are many exposed trees roots. Not a good trail for folks with knee pain. There are some steep inclines. Once you make it to the caves there are some nice flat areas to have a snack. I never made my way down to the beach which is an additional 4 miles making an total of 10 miles in and out. Overall I highly recommend Chick-fil-A out the caves !

We came here for a short visit a few years ago. This time we came back to hike the full Lakeshore Trail (10+ miles) starting at the parking area of Meyers Beach. We did an overnight drive from the Twin Cities and boondocked right in the parking area, because we wanted to have an early start with the hike, and it was perfect to see the northern stars here! We woke up to a beautiful sunrise and the opening view of the lake.
There is a $5 day fee to park there. There are two non-gendered, one-person-use bathrooms in the area, and the only light source is from the single window each provide. There are couple picnic tables, running water, and resources about the islands and surrounding areas. There's park rangers there to answer any questions you have as well (during open hours).
We started hiking at 5am and stopped several times to bask in the views of the caves and horizons of other islands. It's definitely quiet and less crowded. The Lakeshore Trail takes you to the Lakeshore camping sites, and is a medium to hard difficulty in hiking, depending on your hiking endurance. It is not kid or accessible-friendly. There are some fallen trees and natural damages around the trail due to early storms. Also note that there are not a lot of barriers around the trails, so do hike with caution and be conscious of your surrounding and environment at all times. With some stops here and there, we got to the campground in about 4 hours. We hung around the beach area for a quick skinny dipping in the cool, clear water, rest, and refuel; and then made our way back to the starting point. By this time, people are trickling in for kayaking tours. It was nice to see kayakers below the trail and caves. We got back in about 3 hours this time since we didn't make a lot of stops as we did going there.
Once back, we took the boardwalk down to the beach (Meyers Beach) and hung out with other folks for lunch and watch kayakers launch their tour from here. This is now one of our top list to be when visiting Apostle island.
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Mainland Sea Caves in Algoma, Ontario offer a breathtaking winter wonderland experience. The towering waves of Lake Superior create stunning ice ridges and caves that are ideal for photography enthusiasts. However, visitors must bundle up in warm clothes and snowshoes to explore the caves. Due to climate change, these incredible natural formations could disappear within a few decades.
Amazing! Took a self guided kayak rental from nearby Lost Adventures. About a 45 minute paddle there, then an hour to explore the caves. So cool, beautiful weather and unforgettable memories!

Gorgeous! Took the Grand Tour of the Apostle Islands in August 2022. 2 1/2+ hour tour. Arrived early for excellent parking & seats on the boat. (Recommend back row top deck for long legs & excellent views) Was totally worth $45+ a person. The captain was an excellent narrator and guide for the tour. Many fascinating comments and honestly, he was funny, keeping the tour interesting and fresh. Bathroom and snacks on boat. Thrilled to see the crew clean the railings regularly to keep germs low. Some guests opted for masks, most didn't. Great for families with kids. A family with 7 kids under 15 joined the tour and looked like it was a great time!

Great place for avid and experienced campers and kayakers! A lot of fun for inexperienced campers as well. Towns and areas surrounding this area are small, shops close early, and most restaurants close by 8; but a few restaurants are open later. I would bring a cooler already stocked and snacks. Prices are high at the grocery stores so try to come prepared to save money. The views are brilliant views and some great hiking. We came up to kayak the sea caves but did not get a chance due to “weather.” That may have increased the star rating to a 5. Great hiking trail: Meyers Beach Sea Caves trail-solid moderate trail. This was a great time! Young kids or persons with disabilities would need significant assistance completing this trail. Lots of nearby campsites. Can burn wood nearby campsite- if you can find any dry, downed logs. Lots of available kindling but we bought wood at a nearby casino for $5.50 a bundle. On a cool night, one bundle for 30-45 minutes of fire.

The sea caves are fabulous! I took my family on a full day sea kayak trip with Whitecap Kayak. Do not pass this spot up! It’s a quick drive up off the highway to a parking lot and from there you are surrounded by amazing views of the rock cliffs. The pictures just don’t do it justice. It was a little crowded when we went so I recommend going early to possibly get a little more solitude.

This is arguably the best view of Lake Superior in Minnesota.
To get to the parking lot, there is a very narrow and winding road. I would parking in the lot off the highway if you are towing anything.
The cliff is right next to the parking lot, and you can get all of the good views in under a minute walk. It is incredibly dangerous here as there are no guardrails, and falling off means certain death.

Nice area to hike. We didn't explore the entire area, just a short way from the parking lot. It is a little narrow road going up to the top, be considerate when you meet another vehicle.
The parking lot is pretty small, but cleared out while we were there. No defined trails off the lot, so don't bring granny in her wheelchair and expect to wheel her from the parking area.
We got to witness a pair of rock climbers scaling the cliff.
Bri g good walking shoes here.

Very cool and well worth the stop along the north shore. You can drive right up to a small parking lot and walk right to the viewpoint with ease. When we went it was packed and a lot of people parked in places that weren't parking spots making it very nerve-racking driving on a cliff. Just some very inconsiderate people. If you just wait at the entrance to the parking lot, people rotate in and out pretty easily to snag an actual parking spot. Apparently it's a common spot for people to rock climb and repel down the cliffs as well. There many here when we stopped.

Scenic setting for viewing wildlife & waterfalls, plus challenging hike trails & secluded campsites.
A gem of a park off the beaten path! It is inland from Highway 61 and the last 6 miles to the park are gravel. You pass through a nice town, Finland, before arriving. Once you find it, everything is pretty close together, though.
My friend and I hiked the Middle trail up to the falls and then finished the loop on the Humpback trail. It is more of a forest path than a fully cleared trail, but that is by no means a bad thing. It is well maintained and clearly marked.
Technically, it is a moderately difficult trail due to the frequent changes in altitude. Expect many hills and bring your own water. The payoff for those hills, though, is breathtaking views and gorgeous boreal forests. You can't ask for a better example of the beauty of the North Shore!

Very nice backpacking and hiking to be had in this state park, all sites here are backpacking campsites. I was at site 14 and it was very nice and had a fire ring and you could for 3 tents here and access down to the river was very easy there was also a toilet near camp. I believe just about every campsite has their own toilet for use. The manitou river trail is a nice trail lots of up amd down hill, it is quite over grown and lots of fallen trees so be prepared to climb over some logs. Other than that its got some nice scenery.

This park was beautiful! Our campsite was a little walk to the river. We stayed at campsite 12, which was nice and private. Some of the campsites by the river were so close to the trail they didn't seem very secluded. Our site was 3 miles away from the parking lot. There are some closer sites by the lake. We hiked almost all the trails. The Manitou River Trail was my favorite trail.

This hike to the waterfall was AMAZING! A true gem! The waterfall was gorgeous and not too far from parking. The trail is more intermediate on difficulty.
We did the humpback trail loop after the waterfall, it was decently overgrown, but the trail itself was nice! Made for a more natural hiking experience.
The road to the park is gravel/mud,so if you go on a rainy day, your car will be muddy.

Great hidden gem off the busy North Shore. We hiked the Middle Trail to the Cascades (part of SHT), then took Humpback to complete loop to parking lot. Beautiful views and fewer people than most state parks near Hwy 61. This is more rugged than many hiking club hikes, and was quite steep and slippery (we hiked in light rain conditions) in some places. Well worth it if you are an avid hiker and wear proper footwear. Be cautious in steep places where stairs have fallen away and rebar sticks out. There is no visitor center or staff, just pit toilets and beautiful trails.

Loved this hike. The state park is a little ways off of 61 so not as many folks were around hiking (but enough to feel safe). Did the 2 mile hike to the waterfall and back. The hike back up is harder since it’s uphill more. Most the trail is in the shade and some areas have a nice breeze. Very limited cell service so make sure you have a map to get there in back in your car. Trail is marked well and well maintained.

What a stunning park and simple trails that are unpaved. We took the waterfall trail because it was easy and didn't want anything rigorous in the heat. Mosquitoes were bad so use DEET in peak season. We were using natural bug spray which didn't deter them at all and combined with natural essential oils on our skin. Just use DEET and don't put it on your skin. Trails are easy to navigate and signs are posted. The shelter area is broken down or demolished, unsure. We drove up there from Duluth which was only an hour and a half or so and the scenic drive is so pretty. You pass through a couple of small towns, Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls and I think Tettegouche. You'll pass Betty's Pies on the way up and that's definitely a stopping point. Download the AllTrails app for more details and photographs from other hikers. Enjoy!

Rustic park off the beaten path but we'll worth the stop. Great for a day trip this place is quiet and secluded. Excellent hiking trails kept in good shape. It is a rustic park so not much more than trails and hike in campsites. The scenery is awesome but this park get overlooked by everything else outdoors up the north shore.

Very primitive park with narrow somewhat overgrown paths. No visitors center. Vault toilets. Dirt road for miles to get there. Moderately difficult hike out to a beautiful falls. Went on a Monday late morning in August and only saw one other group over a three hour hike.
Virginia VanKeulen — Google review
The park was very minimal for a state park but that meant it wasn't as crowded either. There was a primitive toilet by the gravel parking lot and a well for water a ways down the road. Other than that, it was just hiking trails. We camped at site 6 by the overlook and it was gorgeous. We could see Lake Superior from up there! But it was a strenuous last leg of the hike to get up there. The site had a pit toilet and fire ring with a grate. While we could hear the river it was a solid 1/2 mile hike down the trail to the nearest access. The trails were very narrow and obstructed until we connected to the Superior Hiking Trail. The waterfall was well worth the hike.

This is an absolute rustic, back to nature state park. There's no park office, just a stand with maps, park info, and the passport book stamp.
We arrived to a full parking lot, but saw few people. We took the Middle Trail to the falls. The last half kicked our butts (steepness & minimal maintenance), but we managed & the view of the falls was worth it.

I love this state park. It is a hidden gem that is tucked away off the beaten path. I have camped here twice with the most recent being with my wife and two kids last October. We had a mile or so hike past a small lake to our campsite. It was up on a hill but the climb was worth it. So quiet and peaceful. We didn't hear another person or vehicle the whole time. Beautiful stargazing. We all sleep soundly. This park is so worth the visit.
Vast lakefront park offers scenic river gorge trails & waterfalls, year-round camping & recreation.
Awesome gorges where the river has cut through for thousands and thousands of years. Always one of my favorite stops. If you are adventurous keep going and hit Carlton peak. Long walk but the views are amazing!!!

Nothing short of magnificent. We were expecting just a hidden waterfall between the rocks but from curiosity we decided to climb. It was breathtaking one of those mesmerizing experiences that you never forget. The falls goes through spectacular rock formations and has many many drops. Don't miss this gem it is worth every bit of your time!

This is definitely some thing you have to do if you’re driving by.
What are you listening to You can park on the freeway and it looks like there’s nothing there but you hike down and there’s like six amazing waterfalls in this really gorgeous deep red river.
I’ve never seen water that color before it was so gorgeous! Also the ferns and everything around the foliage was so green and lush. It’s places like this that makes me think northern Minnesota is the prettiest place in America.
Jared Lesueur — Google review
Favorite north shore river. Quick and easy hike to the most gorgeous spots but you can also get down along the river and scramble a little bit if that’s your thing. Other than right along the river, the paths here are easy hiking. Also a great place to take the doggo.

The waterfall/hiking club trail is awesome. The river above the waterfall is full of boulders and looks very cool around dusk. We also as a black bear on the back side of the hiking club trail climbing and tree for food.

This is one of my favorite Minnesota state parks. Especially after a good rain the waterfalls are amazing! I highly recommend hiking to the top. The river is equally beautiful.
Everything in the trail is clean and neat and well marked.
If your going along the Northshore this is definitely worth your time to stop and check it out.

So fun! I loved how you can hike down by the water, and then cross the road and hike what used to be a waterfall 100s of years ago. It was gorgeous and fun for a family of all ages!

Such a beautiful park. We visited on a cold and windy day in October and it was still beautiful. A must see.

First time in this park. Have done Gooseberry and Tettegouche many times - love them. But this might be my new favorite. Definitely did not feel like I was in MN anymore. Colorado anyone? California? Go farther North than the other two and do this one - it is worth it. The rock gorges, the waterfalls, the rapids, the beach. They have it all.

Look…this place has a 4.9 rating. Who gave it a 4? Come on, man? This place rocks…literally. Beautiful rock outcroppings and rocky trails to scuffle over and across to get a glimpse of yet another waterfall or cascade. There are about 6 in a half mile hike. And yes, the gorge is gorgeous. So many vista points. It’s not a long or overly difficult hike but don’t plan to whip through it. Take your time. Enjoy what is now my favorite North Shore park.
Stephen Balza — Google review
This is such a nice park. There are plenty of hiking trails and a couple of waterfalls. We camped in the upper campground so we could walk to most trails and waterfalls. We want to come back here and explore some more.

Temperance River State Park is one of the most underrated and a hidden gem in the North shore. One. Would never get enough of the lake Superiors view from this park. I have camped here twice and the experience was amazing. I recommend camping at the lower campground and sports particularly 42-44 for the best experience. I am glad that I chose this park for my vacation. The amenities are good overall. They have an onsite shower and toilet facilities which are well maintained. Bug spray is a must because the park can get damp .

Beautiful park! Great nature trails for hiking, beautiful views of the river as it flows rapidly toward Lake Superior. During spring/summer definitely need some mosquito and black fly repellent due to the moisture and dense foliage.
Carole Headley — Google review
Wonderful views and well maintained walking path. Some steep parts but still a good hike if you take your time.
Kate Casper — Google review
I have visited many of the state parks and falls along the Lake Superior Lakeshore during my recent vacation. For some reason, my daughter and I liked this park and the falls most. Maybe it's because we took some extra unnecessary steps to raise our adrenaline level🤭. When you drive to south on Route 61. Right after you pass the Temperance Park enterence, you will see the parking lot on both sides of the road. Take the parking lot on the left side. You will only be a city block away from an amazing scenery. It only takes less than a minute walk! If you follow up the trails, you will get to experience better views. But I must say that the path involves uneven steps of rock as you go higher. I hiked in the evening time, so I was attacked by insects even tho I used %100 deet insect repellent. But mine may have been worn off since I applied it around noon and hiked all day.
I captured one of the best photos at this park . As a photographer, I am very happy with all the breathtaking views and the pictures I took.
Sera-y — Google review
This is a really fun state park with a lot to do in it. The hiking trails are very well maintained, and there are also informational signs around.
There are also spots further down some trails to jump off rocks into the river.

Very beautiful spot. It can get busy on weekends, but the park is big enough where usually it's not an issue. Lots of opportunities for hiking with scenic overlooks and spurs to the Superior Hiking Trail.
Logged 2.5 miles on the Oberg Mountain loop. Very glad to have our snowshoes given the recent snow and some decent drifts on the trail. Short and easy hike, moderate inclines totaling a little over 400ft in elevation gain. We didn’t see any other hikers on the trail! Absolutely beautiful views!
Megan Flynn — Google review
The trail is mostly shaded except for the overlook locations. The overlook spots are scenic in the summer but I bet they are tremendous in the fall. The tradeoff is you would miss the berries along the trail fueling you through.
Josh — Google review
Fantastic little trail. Nothing too long, but not so short it felt pointless in checking it out. Loop is 2.3 miles, but if you add the trail getting you too the loop I'd say the whole hike is closer to 3.5.
Some fantastic views as well!
David Poynter — Google review
Beautiful trail with more overlooks than you can count! Moderate hike that was perfect for our 5, 7, and 9 year olds (who are pretty regular hikers). The incline was not bad at all for the elevation you’ll gain over Lake Superior and Oberg Lake! Highly recommend!
Heather Busch — Google review
SPECTACULAR views on this trail! 100% worth it, best views I saw in the North Shore area, especially during fall colors.
Jace Bresina — Google review
Absolutely stunning views of fall colors display. This is an awesome hike, having a loop make it even better. This isn’t too difficult but stay away from taking strollers.
Deepak Sharma — Google review
This was a wonderful trail with a lot of great views.
I went during mid October so some of the leaves were just starting to fall off.
Even though the trail and parking was free, this is one of the better bang for your buck hiking trail. Would definitely come back.
Toua Lee — Google review
Moderate difficulty of a hike. Takes about 1.5 hours for the loop. Beautiful overlooks of Lake Superior and great fall foliage depending on the time of year you are visiting.
Three Points Lodge — Google review
Oberg Mountain offers some excellent views with a minimum of hiking required. If you're walking solo and are a quick walker you can probably do the whole loop in an hour, otherwise plan for two hours to ensure you are able to see the views. The trail is mostly easy trail to walk with only some short inclines throughout and is well traveled due to it's convenience. Compared to Carlton Peak the views aren't as good but the shorter hike makes this a much more approachable destination. Make no mistake, however, the views on a clear day are fantastic and well worth the hike!
Ben Borgert — Google review
Muddy when it has raines but do-able. Great fall colors right now. Moderate hike with a few overlooks. Easy parking with toilet.
Sarah Bergren — Google review
A fantastic hike for the novice and advanced hiker alike! Breathtaking views of the rolling tree covered hills and Lake Superior from several different marked overlooks. The trail is unpaved and has some steeper inclines, but no special equipment is needed to hike the full loop. There are a few benches along the trail loop and all trash is haul your own out. No bathrooms along the trail but there is a primitive at the parking area. Highly recommend this trail!

Great entry point and great outfitter. They do a nice job operating the campground and providing outfitter services for the BWCA. Convenient shop, showers and bathrooms. Large parking lot and easy access to Sawbill lake for trips.

I’ve used this outfitter for several trips in the past and have always had a great experience. This year, in trying to be even more prepared for a busy and limited BWCA trip, I’ve had exceptional service from this team! My trip is 6 months away and I know it’s going to be amazing. Thank you all for all the hard work you do to make adventures safe and memorable. See you soon!

Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Our group traveled a slightly less than recommended route the day after ice out last year and they were sure to ask us the right questions to make sure we were up for the task before sending us on our way. Pricing was very reasonable and they have most or all of the accommodations you’ll would need for a trip. 10/10 will choose Sawbill again.. and again and again.

Great outfitter for our family trip. Got a bear barrel and 3 person canoe for BWCA trip. Good gear and service! Very friendly staff. They adjust rental cost based on number of days in the BW so when we came out early due to weather we only paid for the days we used the gear. Easy walk to the entry site/landing. Great small shop for souvenirs and last minute gear as well!
Chris Thompson — Google review
We've had an awesome experience every time we've outfitted our canoe trips through them. This past weekend, we made a poor decision which caused damage to a canoe. We tied it off on the shoreline overnight, and the waves caused the canoe to rub on a rock and nearly made a hole. They respectfully explained the problem, even offering to pay for half of the repair. We wanted to pay for the entire thing, since it was our issue, but they insisted! I will always refer friends looking to be outfitted in this region of the bwca to use Sawbill! I'm a customer for life.

I called them on my way in to let them know I was about an hour away, by the time I got there Mathew was waiting for us had everything ready to go, went trough all of the equipment, He make a few suggestions for us (which I am glad I took them) had a campsite ready for the night and out we went the next day. The checkout was easy, the only thing was the showers were closed due to COVID 19 but that was understandable. It was a an overall great experience. Thanks Mathew for your knowledge and enthusiasm, greatly appreciated. Thanks Sawbill Outfitters for making this Dady daughter trip an unforgettable experience.

Nestled in Cook County, it offers dramatic mountainous terrain and stunning views of Lake Superior. Visitors can partake in activities such as hiking, biking, sightseeing, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, and snowboarding.

We skied here for two days (Dec 28-29). During the holiday season, they require you to purchase a 2-day pass. We picked up the lift tickets and my rentals the evening before to avoid the morning zoo.
Both days, we didn't arrive until about 10 am and by then cars were being parked directed to the lower lots. The trolleys/shuttle to the gondola/lift ticket/rentals were frequent and didn't linger too long. Also, free parking! There's one EV charger in the Papa Charlie's lot but I'm guessing that gets claimed pretty early in the morning. When we were there in the evening, an "ICE-hole" was parked in the stall by the charger.
I could only figure out how to get to Eagle Mountain and Moose Mountain because maps were sparse and I'm directionally challenged. It was cold weather on Dec 29, so they were filling only every other gondola to Moose Mountain and every two gondolas on the return to Eagle Mountain, so gondola lines were long and slow moving. A helpful employee told me about Moose Access run that takes you to Moose Mountain, which had a return run to Eagle Mountain. Very pretty views (that's what pics are of).
My main complaint is how poorly marked the runs are. I'm used to Vail system and don't get lost on their hills. I'm also used to maps on the lifts, so we can plan out our next run on the ride.

Hands down the best ski resort in the Midwest. The new ultra fast group chairlifts are the best that I have been on. They will get you up the mountain super quick, giving you more time to ski. The runs are always well maintained and quick. The ski up lodges are fantastic, you can literally ski right up to your front door. The views and scenery from a top the mountains is unbeatable in the Midwest.

Definitely one of the best ski resorts in the Midwest! Tons of natural terrain that is fun to ride. Way more mountain than I could explore in one day. Park is nothing special, but I'm not disappointed because that's not what I went for. Also a few flat areas that I had to walk a bit more than what I'm used to. Trails are also a bit confusing to figure out at first when going between mountains. High speed chairlift and gondola are great! Overall I'd definitely recommend going here if you live in the Midwest.

Best ski hill within 500 miles or more. Kind of on the expensive side with limited hours, so no night skiing, but nice lifts, gondola to the far hill, lots of runs. The views are exceptional. If it wasn't for the ever increasing price for lodging and lift tickets, I would give 5 stars.

This was our 1st time skiing there. Took my son for his 16th birthday. It was amazing skiing for the Midwest. We booked a package stay and ski. We had no issues at all checking in at the hotel and the hill. We were blesses on the first day with 5"-6" of fresh snow. And the second day we had amazing groomers. My ski tracker said that we got 36 runs in one day with 27,000 vertical feet.
The only complaint I have is, the lefties need more training. Most held and pulled the chairs excessively. My son got hit in the back and I almost missed the seat because of the hold and pull. I saw one couple fall off on the bridge chair because of the lefties. Our solution was to stand and grab the chair before they could.
Above issues will not stop us from coming back. 👍👍👍

We drove through the 'ski village' area only to access a nearby waterfall trail, but the previous evening's rain made that trek a bit more treacherous then we had prepared for, so we decided to enjoy a gondola ride instead! Very scenic! Great (approx) 10 minute ride!
One negative: Standing in the ticket line with the alpine slide folks...it seemed like very few of them had managed to fill out their safety waivers beforehand, so it really bogged down the ticket-purchasing process. The ability to purchase 'gondola only' tickets elsewhere would have been nice.

Good Midwestern ski area. High speed lifts allow good access to most of the terrain. My only annoyance is the very unclear policy on skiing with your backpack. I have a small USWE 1.6 liter ski backpack. One single lift op did not like my pack and wanted me to take it off each ride up. No other lifties had an issue and the patrol all had larger packs. It won't stop me from returning, but I don't ski without a first aid kit. I even rode bar down the entire day because I have my kid with me. So it was an odd experience. Food prices are average for a large ski area. Parking is at a premium if you are not staying in a hotel on site. I recommend that if you want to be there multiple days. It is a bit of a walk from their main lot, but its no worse than any western resort. The best part is the view.

We arrived in the morning for the hiking club hike. We stopped in the park office, where they had a nice selection. The parking for the hike is a bit tight and we assisted someone who was "stuck" and needed some assistance backing out.
The hike to the falls is fairly short, and we continued to the mountain view. I'm glad I was prepared to wear my 3 year old, as it would have been difficult for her to keep up. As we came off the mountain, the hiking club hike was not well labeled due to a fallen tree so we continued on the SHT in error and had to backtrack, adding a half mile or so to our total hike. That portion of the hiking club trail was clearly well traveled, but not as well maintained. There were many downed trees which the kids loved climbing over but they were a bit tired by then.
After the hike we went over to the picnic side of the park and enjoyed a picnic lunch on Lake Superior, which was amazing!

Saw this park on our way back from Grand Portage State Park. Stopped on the side of the road and made the short hike to see the falls. It was gorgeous. Definitely recommend.

We stayed at Cascade River Lodge, hiked right from there into the state park. Didn't Lookout loop first. Nice to get the harderpart down first. Beautiful views at the stop. Seen a deer drinking in the river. The falls was breathtaking!

This hike is somehow overlooked on most you tube videos, but it is our favorite hike. You can park at hyw marker 100 and enter that way. Beautiful falls!!
Amanda Collins — Google review
It was a beautiful trail, however signage was a bit iffy. We never really found the loop part of the hikers club trail because we didn’t see any sign indicating where the rest of it was after the look out point. We kept heading west, but eventually turned around.
Also not very certain as to where the arrows are pointing, or lack of arrows. There was one point where we followed the hikers club arrows and we ended up out of the state park, and we turned around at that point as well. But other than that it was pretty.

Stopped here just to stretch our legs and found out we made a lucky choice. The trail to the falls was a lot of fun and the falls themselves were impressive. There was no ranger on duty here so we had to check ourselves in. The daily use fee is $7, so be sure to bring some dollars or a check. The daily fee lets you into all of the MN state parks, and there are quite a few between the border and Duluth.

We always park at the Cascade River parking right off 61, not the SP parking. Medium to difficult hike because it has a lot of stairs and is all uphill. Payoff is worth it though, lots of waterfall and river views. You can also go down to the end of the river where it flows into Lake Superior. We always skip rocks there!
Three Points Lodge — Google review
An amazing State Park. You will have to pay for parking. You can pay ahead of time or pay when you get there. Parking is VERY limited. So, expect a packed lot during peak hours/seasons. Still, very well worth coming here.
The trails are not paved but VERY well maintained. Make sure you have a map In case you decide to hike around. The map is extremely useful. Or, use the gps on your phone to pinpoint where your exact location is. The waterfalls are very nice. There are no guardrails at certain parts so be VERY careful. The only rest rooms are at the campground, where the campground parking is located. Park is dog friendly but we never saw any that were unleashed, for obvious reasons.
Overall, a very nice state park. Trails are easy for someone for. If someone has trouble walking, make sure to take breaks, it's not too hard doing the smaller trails. But if you are doing a longer hike, be prepped. Would highly recommend coming here. Pictures does not give this park justice. Definitely check it out yourself.

This is part of my annual North Shore retreat and for good reason. It never fails to make me catch my breath and stay awhile to just stare in awe at the splendor that MN has to offer. Would highly recommend if you're traveling along the North Shore and have limited time for the State Parks.
Carissa Baumeister — Google review
As with all of the MN State Parks along the North Shore, this one is outstanding. Doesn't take long to find a waterfall. The Lookout Mountain hike is a good one and you're rewarded with spectacular views from the top.
Randy Benton — Google review
Park right on state highway sixty one and go on the west side of the river, and about two hundred feet up some steps a beautiful waterfall.
Len Harris — Google review
One of the best Minnesota State Parks! The campsite is beautiful and well kept (new bathrooms/showers!) and just a stones throw from the lake. There are trails right from the campground to the main trails. I would definitely recommend the main Lookout Mountain Loop (SHT) hike. Not too strenuous but a great view at the summit (if it's not too foggy!). I would recommend this park to anyone!
Great place to sit and chill. A little hairy getting out to it, what with the broken guiderails

Beautiful scenery. I think its more enjoyable during summers. During this spring season, its really windy and cold 🥶. I couldn’t feel my hands and ears 👂when we got there. However, I’d still recommend it.
The Igorot Wanderer — Google review
Little walk right next to Grand Marais Artists point. Grab a coffee and take a walk along the cement walkway. Perhaps don't go on too windy of a day as there isn't always a handrail and the waves can crash up.

While it was challenging to get to the lighthouse over Rocks & narrow concrete blocks, it was a great view of Grand Marais. Good shoes & balance required.
Lori Thompson — Google review
From town, getting to the lighthouse appears to be a straightforward and relatively easy path. Once you get out there you realize the trek is longer and more uneven. The path can get narrow at times for two way foot traffic. Once you’re out by the lighthouse, there’s plenty of room for pictures or to go swimming. You can climb the steps, but the trap door is locked shut. The entire property is unsupervised so exercise caution.

A must stop in Grand Marais! Grab some Java Moose coffee and World's Best Donots and go enjoy the morning on the lake! Would recommend going early or late due to popularity on the weekends 👍

The array of artwork in different mediums are incredible. The selection of originals and prints offers a wide range of price points. The jewelry is beautiful too!
Don’t miss this North Shore gem!

This amazing store never fails. I find the most beautiful items. The staff is friendly, upbeat and have great senses of humor. The store is a browsers paradise with so many eye catching delights to look at. I have purchased several prints and items from this establishment and years later still enjoy looking at them. Whether jewelry, art works, or home decor items if you love unique things this is the place to go. If I were asked what is one place not to miss in Grand Marais MN this would be the place. It allows me to take a piece of northern MN home with me.

One of the finest collections of indigenous, local and incredible global talent in one place that I’ve ever seen. I purchased several pieces and probably will each time I come.

Brought in a few pieces to be either reframed, new mats or brand new frame jobs. Niel did an amazing job! The craftsmanship is top notch for all the pieces we had worked. Niel walked through options with us and used his expertise to produce the best possible outcome.

We popped in here while waiting for the pizza shop across the street to open. One of the workers was extremely knowledgeable about the town and the art inside! We brought my toddler inside and felt very welcomed. They have everything from paintings to prints to jewelry to blown glass. We bought a paid of butterfly wings encased in resin and they were sooo beautiful. Will be back next year!
Katlyn Lodermeier — Google review
This gallery offered many different art forms. (From paintings, to jewelry, to clocks) This would be a fantastic place to go to for nice gifts or home decor. Everything was extremely well displayed and was visually pleasing. The only thing stopping me from buying was everything seemed overpriced and there were multiple prints/copies of each art piece.
Julia VanDalen — Google review
This gallery is such a treat to visit in Grand Marais! The art is stunning, largely capturing the beauty of the surrounding area. Different art media are used, so there is plenty of variety of work with photography, paintings, glass work, and ceramics to choose in a range of prices. I am always inspired when I stop at the Sivertson Gallery.
Kali HP — Google review
Gee, where to start? The gallery displays all types of art, including books for children. Staff was happy to answer our many questions and guide us to a good place for food and wine. 4 hour drive for us but we'll go back.
It is a very short hike to a beautiful view. From the North Shore, it is questionable if this is worth the drive, but if you’re relatively close it is a must visit. There is also a dirt road for the last stretch of the drive to get there, so be prepared for that.

Short hike, lollipop shaped, steps up steep but then evens up for the hike around loop, great views from top of beautiful lake

Mid may & still frozen. Natural beauty at the top of this cliff! Along the back side of the loop we found nesting or a path Moose had taken. We had to play hopscotch to dodge their piles of land mines but it was neat to see the path they took. Wish we could’ve gotten to see them, at a great distance of course😊

I'll never travel to Thunder Bay without this trip planner again
Known for the Devil's Kettle waterfall, this park offers opportunities for camping, hiking & more.
4/10/22 - First of all, the signs said you need a permit to enter. The office was closed, so we followed instructions and left cash inside the envelope (7$). You can also enter your card details as well. We only the Devil’s Kettle hike. It was snow everywhere, so it made the hike hard. At some point there was around 175 steps to get through. It is around a 2 mile round trip. It was not possible to see the waterfall disappearing between into the pothole since it was covered in snow. Loved the views though.
Ajimon Thomas — Google review
Smaller park with limited parking, but we visited during the week in fall, so we did not have any issues. There is a nicely maintained trail to the lower falls and Devil's Kettle, but be prepared for stairs! About 200 down to the lower falls, and 60 up to Devil's Kettle, and then you have to hike back up! Worth the trip. We were able to get a great view of lower falls by climbing down on some trees and rocks, but the stairs and lower observation area, to the rock faces of the lower falls, is temporarily closed due to flood damage.
Jeff Schmit — Google review
Up hill all the way but still a very fun hike to Devil's Kettle. I picked a terrible day to make the 5 hour drive since we got 20 below wind chills, but it is a beautiful park and trail. I'm going back in the summer.
David Doren — Google review
Great state park. Devils kettle is an awesome destination. The trail is fairly easy other then about 180 steps towards the end. Total trail is a little under 2 miles round trip.

Beautiful park. The sites are pretty close together, but there is enough foliage to feel comfortably private. Definitely requires precise back in of the trailer. Camp host was super informative and helpful. Loved our stay!

Judge C.R. Magney State Park is a North Shore gem! Its pristine forests, rushing Brule River, and the enigmatic Devil's Kettle waterfall make it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. Hiking trails offer stunning vistas, and the mysterious disappearance of the river into Devil's Kettle captivates all. Whether you're exploring the beauty of Lake Superior's rugged coastline or immersing yourself in the serene wilderness, this park's natural wonders will leave you in awe. It's an adventurer's paradise and a place to connect with the raw, untouched beauty of Minnesota's outdoors. Don't miss it!
Anne Towner — Google review
The Devil's Kettle Falls was absolutely stunning and I imagine would be even better in a non drought year! It was definitely worth the somewhat challenging hike. I would not recommend taking this hike with very young children as the trail has lots of rocks and roots and is a steady incline for most of way to the falls. Also be aware for people who have issues with stairs that there probably close to 200 to get to the Devil's Kettle portion of the falls.

Hiked the campground side, not Devils Kettle. The top loop was across a large creek/small river that we rock hopped across. We did it in spring with snow and snow melt, but there is probably water in that year round. In the picture, it's about 5 feet wider than at the trail. We hiked in the woods about 50yards to a good crossing spot.
Sara Silence — Google review
The park is beautiful, especially the falls (devil’s kettle!). The hiking trails are great. But the camping resources leave a lot to be desired. Bathrooms are closed mid-day and all night. Why?!!?! No running water, no maps, no cell service to access maps and firewood sales, no helpful ranger station to assist campers. If you’re camping bring in everything you might need!
John Karp — Google review
This park is a fair way up the north shore. The main draw is the devil kettle. The water that goes in, no one knows where it comes out. It's not a long hike, but there are about 175 steps involved, just an FYI .
Robert — Google review
This is my favorite hiking spot along the north shore. The falls are beautiful, and it's not quite as busy as some of the other parks. It feels like a hidden gem, and it's super close to Grand Marais so it's an easy trip. There are plenty of stairs though, so come prepared.

Had a great experience camping at Site #22 for 3 nights! Bathrooms had hot showers, and campsites have enough foliage and trees between to make it feel private and cozy. Access to SHT from campground by foot was great, and we walked to the shore of Lake Superior from our campsite multiple times as well. Definitely worth the drive!

This place is great for a few hour stop. Smaller park with limited amenities but the highlight is Devil's Kettle waterfall. A really nice hike and trail and staircase to ger there. Well worthbthe visit. Has a spacious trailhead parking area and daybuse area with the Superior hiking trail going through. Decent campground as well.

For those who love hiking and being close to nature. Hiking trail is moderately difficult to difficult; 192 steps one way, rugged terrain, accessibility to dangerous spots in the river. Really great for those who are physically fit and responsible teenagers. Younger than 10 yo children may get tired out. Hiked in 68 degree weather. I wouldn’t take my younger child here in the winter because it may be very slippery. I went here with my husband and 5 kids-20, 17, 15, 14, and 9. My youngest was quite disappointed due to not getting hot and not being able to swim even though she was able to dip her feet in the water. The older kids loved it but one of mine ran and fell on the trail. Be prepared for injuries just in case but there are some great views and a lot of spots to chill by the waterfall and river.

Beautiful state park. The camp ground is nice and the bathrooms/showers were nice and clean. There is a lot of noise throughout the entire night from traffic on 61. Especially when the big trucks cross the bridge. So I recommend camping in the farther camp sites from road. Especially if you are tent camping. I couldn't sleep at all and unfortunately had to leave a night early. But obviously the park can't do anything about traffic noise. It is what it is. I was in camp #27. Which is a bummer because it's one of the more private camp sites.
Excellent Air BnB! Very clean, very comfortable beds. The flannel sheets were a nice touch. The house rules are straight forward, sensible, and easy to follow. The grounds are beautiful. Interacting with the dogs was an awesome way to start our day of adventuring. I will be visiting again next time I'm in MN.

Linda is a great hostess! We stayed in one of her cabins, (no electric, no running water) it was clean, inviting, and a wonderful experience. We toured here a few years ago, I remember the dogs were beautiful, and the cabin was cute- but the host was rude. I will chalk it up to the array of human personalities and some just seem to clash. Our group will not be back.

Points Unknown is one of the most professional, educational and well-run kennels you will find anywhere in the country. Linda's deep care for the animals' health and happiness are apparent in every step she takes to make the kennel as welcoming and comfortable as possible for people and dogs alike. The sled adventures are spectacularly beautiful and the wilderness around Points Unknown is perfect for summer activities and canoeing as well. Cannot recommend enough!

National parkland featuring a landmark 8.5-mi. trail with waterfalls & an old fur trading post.
Take a step back in time when you visit this place. We had a great time exploring and meeting the historical reenactors. We asked them a lot of questions and learnt so much about the history of this place.
Definitely recommend stopping by the visitors center first and seeing the museum before heading to the historical villages they have set up.

Filled with rich historic items, working (and lit while we were there) fireplaces, and deeply passionate volunteers this surprised me as such a cool stop. Learn all about the fir trade, the Indigenous Americans that made it happen, and the crazy rowers that got canoes here before the winter froze the lake and dogsleds took over. Lots of buildings and Wigwams to walkthrough. Don’t forget to take the Rose Mountain trail on the way back for a spectacular view to wrap the whole experience up.

Really beautiful and informative site. Disappointed that everything outdoors and all of the historical buildings were closed (early October). You could walk around some, but all the signage was tarped up and the other half was gated off for the season. Could still go out on the dock which had some educational pieces. Will go back in summer hopefully soon.
They had a fun Junior Ranger package and patch (no pin, totally ok, just fyi).

One of the coolest National Park sites I have visited. (I have been to 100+) Worth the drive from Duluth. Great rangers there, so informative. Natives are there to help understand the history of the area and the fur trade. Their Junior Ranger program is done really well.

Worth the trip. Beautifully done. Shockingly free. Teenager-approved. Don’t miss the 20-minute film or the historic depot. We loved the freshly baking bread and authentically-built canoes. So cool to be immersed in a different time. The pier is lovely. Don’t walk your dog outside within the depot area - the crabby old DNR guy will judge you real hard for not realizing it wasn’t ok (for shame!). Our one tiny gripe was that we would have liked to learn more about how the portage was used prior to the fur trade period. Plan for 1.5-2 hours to really experience everything.

The visitor’s center had a beautiful view of Lake Superior, looking out towards Isle Royal. Inside the visitor’s center were interesting historical displays of fur trading days and the history of the area. The gift shop offered souvenirs. A short walk from the visitor’s center is the Northwest Trading Co. where you can step back into time and tour the Great Hall, Kitchen, Boathouse, Ojibwe village, and large dock. The docents were happy to share their knowledge of the Trading Co workings, culture, and history dressed in period costumes and acting as characters one might meet in the 1700s. It was truly worth seeing. My only regret is that I had not been to the site earlier. It would be fantastic to share with family and friends.

Loved this place. Excellent visitor center with helpful staff and nice introductory movie. The National Monument and nearby state park are both within the Ojibwa tribal lands and the museum tells the story of the Ojibwa and the world trade that took place here in the late 18th century.

Scenic park featuring an overlook of a 120-foot waterfall, the tallest in the state.
Trip from Chicago. This was on top of our list, and it did not disappoint. This park is located right before the US-Canada border. We did the hike to the waterfalls, it was a short nice hike from the visitor center. It was snow everywhere, so it was a bit slippery but fun. The falls looked chocolatey and amazing.

Minnesota's Highest waterfalls is here. We went on a September and the water flow was decent. It's a short hike for the High falls and the boardwalk is well maintained. The cool thing is that the falls is located right at the US-Canada Border. It acts as a natural border between the two countries. The Visitor center has toilets which were clean.

The impact of the Beaver really moved me here on this monument. Beaver pelts for beaver hats ( and a few other items ) kept this thriving economy booming for a long time her as well as across the northern plain and Missouri. Wars were fought lives were taken rights violated and people's displaced for a beaver hat. But the scenery is absolutely beautiful and the monument is fantastic as the US Parks are all very fantastic. This is a do not miss opportunity well worth the trip.

We drove out to this place because we had heard it had one of the biggest waterfalls in the state. We weren’t disappointed at all. It was gorgeous and took the opportunity to take family photos. The best part? We chose to go during the week and later in the day and there was no one around! The only other people we saw were on the other side of the Canadian border who were enjoying the view from their side. The worst part? It’s a little bit of a walk to get to the waterfall. I personally didn’t have any trouble with it but some might find it difficult or on the longer side.

This was our first stop on our North Shore adventure, and we happened to mention that to the park staff who provided info on area hikes and must see stops, they were very helpful! They have a large heritage center which we enjoyed. The hike to the falls was paved and perfect for the kiddos. Unlike some of the other waterfall hikes on our trip, this was one of the "safest" for our 3 year old. The kiddos also loved the selfie station. Great picnic area as well!

A wonderful state park. Very clean and well maintained. The main paved path is very easy, even for someone that may have difficulty walking. It's rewarding at the falls.
It's early July and in the morning, it was in the high-60s with a slight chilly breeze. During the afternoon, it warmed up. Dress accordingly.
Bug repellent is definitely needed in the summer or at least carry it because there is a good amount of mosquitoes and other bugs.
Overall, a very well maintained state park. Would highly recommend.

Minnesota's highest falls and to me one of the best scenic view one. We first stop by at the visitor center to gather information and use the bathroom. The bathrooms were pretty clean. At the office, Brad informed us well about the hike and gave us lots of good tips. He also suggested other things to see around the area. Thank you for that. We hiked about 1.5 miles easy, paved trail to get to the falls. On our way, we went down a few steps to see the lower part of it. It was mesmerizing. We went early in the morning, so we enjoyed the view alone, and it was peaceful. Also, seeing Canada side up this close was cool. We didn't continue hiking to upper falls since Brad informed us about the condition of the trail. It rained pretty hard the night before, so we didn't wanna take the risk. Maybe next time. Don't forget to use insect repellent ( regular spray won't work, so you would need %100 max deet insect repellent)
Kakabeka Falls, a 40-meter-tall waterfall on the Kaministiquia River in Ontario, is a magnificent sight to see. The waterfall can be viewed from elevated platforms along the gorge and is particularly impressive during spring or heavy rain as the rushing water plunges over the cliffs. The landscape features many fossils dating back 1.6 billion years and was formed by glaciers melting long ago.
Twas a line up but definitely worth it! Water falls is crazy but always amazing to walk around and enjoy the view

They have a walking path from the highway side going at the other side of the falls.

A must visit if you are in the area.
Pictures don't really justify this place, tou have to visit to see. We paid 5$ for two hour parking . Nice washrooms, nice shop area.
Excellent place if you are camping.

Beautiful falls. Most parts of the park are approachable by car which is nice if you want to explore before trekking.
Riverside area was nice. Some swings for children and a small enclosed area in the lake for people to enjoy.

I checked out most of the trails and the falls were amazing. It was a hot day but it was pretty shaded. The visitor center was worth checking out too.

This is really quite a beautiful thing to see.I wish I had seen it in the summer but it still really quite lovely here in the winter

I always love visiting. The super hot days when the mist from the Falls hits you. The best! I wish people would stop littering there and appreciate what we have.

Amazing Kakabeka Falls! It’s really beautiful place and now we have incredible memories about those views. Oh, Canada! You are so wonderful!!! Really would recommend!

Amazing place, loads of parking. Beautiful scenery and a lovely shop. No cafe so stop down the road in the town.

Second highest waterfall in Ontario. Beautiful breathtaking views.

Man o man did we find the perfect place to stretch our legs. This place is so beautiful with nature encompassing the waterway. We were lucky enough to have someone give us their parking pass with over 2hrs left on it. Relaxed for about an hour just taking it all in. Not too many tourists here during our visit so it made it much better to walk around. Definitely recommend this location for pics and relaxation...

Kakabeka Falls and Provincial Park is a favorite place to visit. The spring run off provides enormous volumes of water flow to entertain the nature lover. Groomed hiking trails can lead you up river to a swimming hole of down river to explore the deep forest. There are great camping sites with access to washrooms and potable water. I give 2 thumbs up 👍 👍

Wow. All I can say it WOW!! We had lunch here on our way home to Winnipeg. Spectacular views, lots of platforms to stand on and take pictures.
We were recommended to visit Thunder Oak Cheese Farm by some friends when planning our trip to Thunder Bay, and we're blown away!!
The family owned farm specializes in Gouda. A particular standout is their Gouda cheese curds, which can be tried at several restaurants around the region, or bought in a bag at the store. We got a bag of Garlic curds and snacked on them over a few days. I'm presently trying to find out if I can ship more home to Toronto!
There are a variety of flavors and ages of Gouda for you to choose from in the shop! We were also pleasantly surprised that there was a sampler box to pick up with pre-cut cubes of a variety of their cheeses!
They carry products inside from several other local business including coffee beans, candy, dried meat and more!
Well worth going out of your way for, and a MUST GO for any cheese enthusiast!
Filip Hasson — Google review
It's amazing this kind of farm, you can find all types of cheese there and Mon, Wed and Friday you can take a tour inside and see how they make the cheese. We always try to support local farms and this one is unbelievable, truly recommend is you are coming to thunder bay or if you are living here you have to come and see this wonderful place ps: service is fantastic

Simple shop connected to the cheese storage facility. Gouda in a wide variety of flavors and sizes. Store also has a variety of Dutch treats and local foods like honey, sausages and fudge. While brochure promised tasting availability it is cancelled during COVID-19…
Dale Jeffries — Google review
I had heard that they had good cheese and had checked out their flyer that told of the cheese they make. Gouda is one of my favourites, and I came home with lots of it. It is located in a beautiful area of Ontario and worth the drive to see and enjoy the food they have.
Annie Rudy Gingrich — Google review
Some of the best Gouda made in Canada. We have it all the time. Great shop with viewing of the cheese making process friendly family farm.
Reni Caccamo — Google review
Buy local!!! A huge variety of different flavours of locally made Gouda, all available to sample before you buy! Really different seasonings, some we'd never have thought of for a cheese! Prices are very reasonable. A selection of different types of fresh cheese curds and home made bakery items are available. There's also an assortment of imported Dutch food items including the mighty stroopwaffle - they even have some that are gluten free if that's your thing!
Michelle Massaro — Google review
Great loval gouda. They also sell very good cheese curds. Makes great poutine
Chris H — Google review
Wonderful cheese! Should have bought more. I love cheese curds and happy they sold crackers to go with it so we could snack right away. I wish at least one of the employees would have greeted us and offered to help. It's a small store but from the reviews I expected more from the customer service. The ladies were definitely working hard and friendly at the cash register. Just not outgoing.
Nice visitor center! They have everything you need here: merchandise, stamps, maps, and info from awesome park rangers. They don't accept cash, though, which is pretty annoying. They gave us a "promise to pay" for when we got back to Port and had cell service to pay online.
There is a great restroom building up the road from the visitor center that has showers.
There is a cafe and gift store up from the restrooms that has some additional gifts, pre made sandwiches, drinks, and snacks. All priced well, surprisingly. Super helpful staff as well.
brandon dengler — Google review
Definitely remote! If you're coming for a day trip on the ferry you will want to have a game plan in place as there is a lot to see and not a lot of time!
The rangers do a few talks/walks as free activities to learn about the park and there are a few trails nearby that can get you into the back country quickly. Just be sure to watch the time, if you get too far you might be doing some cross country style running to get back to the boat in time.

This is a great information center for Isle Royale. It's a very pretty building inside and the walls are lined with information on Isle Royale history, animals (like a moose skeleton) and plants. The rangers are really helpful and informative. They sell some souvenirs like post cards, magnets, and maps.
Zachariah Roberts — Google review
The rangers are well organized upon arrival of a boat. The process of checking in and getting a permit moved efficiently and quickly. The visitor center has some neat interpretive exhibits as well. The setting in Windigo is stunning and it is one of the most pleasant places on the island.

Our experience in Windego was awesome! Arriving on the island via the seaplane, we had our orientation here. Our guide (Chad I believe) was great! Hilarious yet extremely informative!
And paying honor to the Chippewa Indians who used to call Isle Royale home by flying their flag next to the American Flag is awesome!

It was essentially closed, just open long enough to check in the new arrivals. Closed for season when we left the next day. The ranger was friendly and helpful.
Fort William Historical Park is a reconstructed fur trading post from the 19th century that served as the headquarters for the North West Company from 1803 to 1821. Spanning across 250 acres on the shores of Kaministiquia River in Thunder Bay, this living-history museum features 57 buildings and actors dressed as French voyageurs, Scottish gentlemen, and Ojibwe people.
A historical site reconstructing the Fort William fur trade post as was in 1816.
Reasonable entry fees. Lots of parking.
Been to many historical sites but this one was exceptional. Very informative with lots of locations and actors providing information.
Learnt so much.
Prepare to spend at least half a day if you are interested in covering all the locations within the premises.
Takes 10 minutes to walk to and back from entrance to site.

We loved this place. Everyone was friendly and helpful. A lot of activities to enjoy in the historical park. Gives you a good vibe of Canada's history as well as you get to see it and feel it. We will definitely be back there for another event. There was fast hot food selling in the park at an affordable amount and it was delicious. I had the fish and chips with my husband.

This was a main reason for our trip to Canada and it was well worth it! The visitor center staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and the fort staff were informative and entertaining. The fort itself was great. We were a little disappointed that a handful of the buildings were closed or off limits, but it didn't really impede our experience. If you find walking too much (the trail from the visitor center to the fort is about a 10 minute walk) you can request a ride to near the gate from the visitor center staff. The admission fee is quite reasonable, and the gift shop prices weren't too bad. An overall great experience, especially for any avid history buff.

Large place with reenactment. I came this summer so there was a discount, but less staff and less activity. No food because of covid I suppose. The actors are great and knowledgable. But don't come in the summer or right now unless you are in it for a good walk.
With summer discount, tickets are $5.65
Bring water as the sun can dehydrate you. Washrooms are clean and modern-- don't let the scenario fool you haha.

Having grown up in Thunder Bay and visiting the fort every year in elementary school the experience was always taken for granted. As an adult and bringing my family to visit the Fort is a whole different experience. The actors and employees were all super knowledgeable and friendly! My only negative is that the Great Hall was closed with no reason as to why.
Can't wait to go again next summer!!

Visited last Friday, in the off season there’s no free roaming only the tour which was very interesting. Our guide was really knowledgeable and kept me engaged the whole time. The only drawback was that we didn’t get to see a whole lot of the site in the time that we were on the tour, but I would recommend anyone visiting the area to go!

My wife and I went there on Monday, Sept 27th. We already knew it would be closed but because we only stayed in Thunder Bay on Monday and Tuesday so we thought we just took a quick peak at the park. While we were wondering around, a gentleman approached us, who introduced himself as Patrick (forgot his last name), the GM of the park. He asked us where we were from, he told us the park was closed but he could show us around, which we were happily accepted. So Patrick indeed took us inside the park and gave us a free VIP-like guided tour! Even though there was no performance or show, we still enjoyed the tour very much! Patrick was very kind and patient, staff we met were all friendly. It was a wonderful experience and we were just so grateful!
Not sure if we would visit it again (since we live in GTA which is pretty far), but if we ever go to Thunder Bay next time, we will definitely pay a visit and pay for the admission!
Thank you again Patrick!

Really very nice Fort. Well done! Kept up beautifully. French or English spoken. Staff stay in time relavent you time period of Fort history. Staff very good at what they do. Would go back. Long walk to Fort Gates down a nicely kept wooded path. Enjoyed.

Beautifully done and very good tour guide - was disappointed that there weren't any postcards available at all, though. The camping was very good for the price, and it will be excellent when the trees grow up! No idea what event was on during June 28, but many of the trucks leaving stopped halfway out the exit to stop and spin their tires and roar out = please put out some speedbumps.

This place was awesome. We were there on a Saturday in July and it was not busy at all. All the staff were in character and we're very knowledgeable and played the part well. The facility was very well kept. Price was reasonable at about 50$for 2 adults and one child. Took us about 3 hours. And the best part is it's dog friendly! We brought our lab in all the buildings and there were a couple other dogs as well. There are live animals on the site so make sure your dogs OK with that.

What an amazing experience to visit and experience Fort Williams. We arrived early, about 0935 and waited to get in. Luckily visiting labor day weekend, all the staff were reenacting, so there were a ton of activities to participate in and observe. We got to canoe up the river. Throw axes and shoot a musket. Highly recommend visiting. Bring comfort shoes and tons of water, as there is a lot of land to cover.

I'm so happy that this is still available for families to attend! It was entertaining and educational, and we got a lot of steps in! Quite easily the best Canada Day that we have had as a family- and it wasn't expensive.
Before I go into details, I want to mention that this is THE PERFECT place to visit for people who get overwhelmed with crowds, noises, or smells.
Our girls learned a lot. The workers did a fantastic job at staying in character and provided a wide variety of facts. They had historically accurate answers for everything that they were asked and were super approachable and patient.
We were surprised at how good and fairly priced the food was.
The views were incredible! The memories are priceless ❤️

This was one of the best attractions we went too. The actors get so into their characters and are very knowledgeable. It really felt like we were going back in time. Their inclusion of indigenous history was fairly well done. The highlights were the cannon firing and seeing the animals.

Best to plan a whole day of 5+ hours to enjoy some of the programming. Dining was nice and unique, and we really appreciated the friendly in-character staff, historical knowledge through interaction, access to farm animals for the kids and signs all in French, English and Anishnaabemowin. Go early so you can self-guide on site for a while before the programmed events!

It was a great pleasure to be part of the 50 years celebration. We did enjoyed a lot by seeing all the historical activities over the very ancient period. The front entrance that was showing on the Google map was not the actual one now. They changed it and made it through the main road earlier than the previous one. Just keep it in your mind when you visit here.

Easily the top attraction in Thunder Bay. We were there for the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Ontario Winter Games and the place was rocking! What a beautiful location. We went back on Family Day between competitions to actually visit the place and had a great time. The guides were great and we got quite a bit of "behind the scenes" history lessons since it wasn't very busy. Would love to come back in the Summer and try one of those voyageur canoe experiences.
While the roads to get here are a little bit rough because thunder Bay hasn't fixed them, this place is a hidden jewel. Very well maintained campground with adjacent fields for events, playground, and two separate beaches. It has a lot of picnic area. For those people who are tent camping or trailer camping, this is an excellent area. It's well mowed and kept up, the bathrooms are in excellent condition, and they have free hot showers with excellent shower facilities. They have washers and dryers, three of each, that go off of $2.50 Canadian for a run each. There are a lot of mosquitoes right now, but that seems to be everywhere. For those people who have traveled more internationally, you will appreciate the shared kitchen commons. There are two stoves and two microwaves and two sinks running hot and cold water. There is plenty of places to prep meals and eat them at sturdy bench tables inside. It's well lit overall. I can't say enough about this place it is truly excellent. From both of the beaches there is an excellent view of the sleeping giant across part of Lake Superior

Beautiful spot to go for a walk or bring your kids to the park.
I love seeing the fishing boats and kayaks out on the water as I get some steps in. There are also swimming areas available for the scorcher summer days.
If you packed up your kids and some snacks, you could spend an entire afternoon out at Chippewa Park.
Excellent walking paths along the water. I'll be going back on the days that I am looking for an easy hiking day with no hills and even ground.

Chippewa Park is a great place to enjoy outdoor activities with young children. There is a nice park and beach as well as several fields that can rented for large group activities. Also it's the only place in town with amusement rides like bumper cars and a merry go round. There are also fun rides for smaller children.

Beautiful and peaceful place to camp. Awesome view of the Sleeping Giant. Off leash dog park next to the campsite with water, trees, grass and lots of room to run. Still close to the city for everything you may need.

Chippewa Park, located at Fort William First Nation's, offers campgrounds, Cabins, fields, beaches and forest trails. Nightly, weekly, monthly rental availability. You can also find day use sites to bring the family out for dinner nestled on the shores of Lake Superior. A children's playground is also on site. Chippewa is a favorite spot for me.

This campground is in a beautiful location along lake Superior. There are pull through and back in RV sites. The sani dump is convenient to use. We were there on opening weekend and the public washrooms and shower houses were filthy from sitting all winter. The coin laundry is $2.50 for washers and driers.

Great little park with a nice little beach and a great view of the sleeping giant. Clean bathrooms and a small amusement park. Bumper cars and a merry go round.
Good spot for a picnic.

An amazing park and a great experience. Not very many people go here so it's kind of like one of those hidden gems to go to if you just want to relax or have a fun family outing. The only reason I didn't give the park 5 stars is because it's not very well maintained but thats the city's fault. In conclusion I would 100% recommend you go here as it was quite an amazing experience!
