The botanical garden in Kandy is really beautiful and rich in flora and fauna. You will see some of the unique plants and trees here. It is very big and you need ample time to take a walk in complete garden. Definitely a recommended place to visit if you in Kandy.

This is a one of the oldest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. If you are interest about trees and plants , this place is very valuable place to see. Can spend complete day for exploring whole garden . Arrangement of places and roads very good, Toilets clean. But can be improve little bit. Cleanliness and attractiveness lower than expected

The place is very beautiful with many sights. Educational at the same time. It is not only for pictures you can actually have a small picnic there. It is big but not misleading. The ticket is 3000 for one person but for local the price is different. There is toilet there so no worries. You can do gulf 🚗 there if you don’t feel like walking.

Brought here by our private driver suggestion and glad we did. Beautiful gardens with lots of old trees. Plenty to walk around and see. Highlight for us were coming across 100s of bats in the trees above, amazing! Plenty of lovely photos to be got here!

Great place to spend a day. We visited in January, not the orchid season, unfortunately. But still there were like 20 different colors. Palm alleys are top spots to take pictures. You can also take a golf cart, but we didn't. Monkeys can be seen there as well eating some fruits and flowers. All the trees have plates, which is very helpful

One of the best botanical gardens worldwide. It's more focused on amazing trees,, you see the long history of these gardens with giant trees, beautiful landscape. You can spend easily 2 to 3 hours walking non stop, but we recommend to take some more time, rest under a nice tree and enjoy the views.

Impressive for its size and details. This Hindu temple is worth visiting. The number of details and figures both inside and outside could get your attention for hours and hours.
Female tourists need to cover their shoulders and legs. You can rent/borrow at the entrance.

By far the best botanical garden I have ever visited. We took the buggy and guide as we had less mobile members in our group, this was a good move as the driver explained a lot as we made our way around the park. Not only did it have a massive array of different plants and some interesting wildlife (birds, monkeys, and bats) but it was just a nice place to relax with may families sitting on the grass enjoying the evening.

This is a wonderful place to visit, so green & lush. You wouldn't feel that you are walking for hours if you are a person who would lose your self in nature. Even if you are not something clueless about the kind of plants there, they will not miss to captivate your eyes & heart. It is an experience we all must have. As a Person from a dry region of the country it was an amazing opportunity for me. It might be a common place for everyone to visit but it's not without reason. We must experience this at least once to understand the wow factor.
Highly recommended you to have this experience.

Absolutely loved this place!
We stopped for a quick visit on our way to Nuwara Eliya but ended up staying for two hours in there because it is so beautiful and enormous. It is very relaxing to walk around or sit for a picnic. Huge collection of plants from all over the world and large trees that are more than 50 years old. Highly recommended if you are staying in Kandy or just passing by!

Excellent botanical garden. ticket price is very fair. very clean. you can buy food inside restaurants and cafes. not too crowded. Very helpful staff. Good security.
Don't use three wheelers near the front gate. they over charge you. always recommend the pick me app three wheelers.

During my stay in Kendy, I was adviced by my host to vist the Botanical Garden. Being a traveller and a photographer, I had my reservation for paying 3000 Sri Lanka Rupees to see what I have seen in almost every Garden I have visited.
I was in for a surprise with the beautiful layout and stunning beauty of the place. An oasis in the busy Kandy area. It makes you feel Parr of a well planned natural jungle. To ease your mind and to give yourself a feeling to be a part of some lovely trees and flowers, do visit this place.

The memorabilia shop is wonderful..

Absolutely beautifully maintained gardens. It's huge, you will need a good 3 to 4 hours to cover the entire area.
We took the golf cart and the driver was very knowledgeable of the garden and it's plants and trees. They have a strict 1hr drive around the park. As soon as you enter it's better to book your time slot for the golf cart for 1000Lkr.
There is a nice restaurant near the large garden, that serves a la carte and buffet while you wait.

Everywhere you visit in Sri Lanka you will have to pay a much higher entry price as a foreigner than a local. July 2023 we paid 3000lkr each for entry to the gardens. You can simply walk at your own pace or choose to pay to ride an electric buggy. The gardens are well sectioned with a number of indoor collections. We enjoyed a couple of hours wandering around. It was Sunday with many locals choosing to spend the day in the gardens. It's worth a visit if you like plants and flowers. There is a toilet block to the right of the Great Circle. The trees surrounding it are filled with hundreds of fruit bats.

One of the best botanical gardens I’ve ever been to. Beats most of the European gardens too. The garden is large and one should ideally take our 4-5 hours to tour it all. They’ve placed benches in multiple places for you to take a seat among the greenery which is beautiful.

Stunning scenery. Must recommend when you are in the area. Pick a day that it's not too hot (if possible). Be careful of the monkeys and baby monkeys. Do not feed them

I was going to skip this but a friend told me this is the only thing worthwhile to see in Kandy especially if one has seen lots of temples in Anuradhapura. This is a huge place so bring water and wear a good pair of shoes. Has washrooms and canteens in the garden and the gift shop is very reasonable
Alnoor — Google review
Little expensive for foreigners. No proper guidance or navigation provided other than a brochure. Felt limited varieties of plants are present in each category such as bananas. Took around 2 to 3 hours for exploring on foot. Interactive experiences are there in between about the national tree of Sri Lanka and all but they are very limited altogether.

Amazing place, should be on the must do list of everyone visiting Kandy. Extremely well taken care of and clean park with a great number of trees, flowers and other plants.

I am a resident of Peradeniya and I visit the Botanical Garden often. It is a beautiful and peaceful place to spend an afternoon, with a huge variety of plants and flowers to see. I especially love the orchid collection. The gardens are well-maintained and there are plenty of places to sit and relax. There are also a few cafes and restaurants on site, which is handy. I would definitely recommend the Peradeniya Botanical Garden to anyone visiting Kandy.

Great place to visit to get a little away from the busy crowds of Kandy.
Make sure to walk all through the park and not just the plant houses in the beginning. You’ll see bat colonies, palm avenues and lots of native and imported plants.

Bahirawakanda Vihara, a prominent Buddhist temple in Kandy, boasts a large white statue of the Buddha towering over the city. The hilltop location provides stunning panoramic views of Kandy and its surroundings, accessible via steep stairs that take approximately an hour to climb. The temple also features a souvenir shop for visitors to purchase mementos.
Beautiful temple with a 360 Aerial view of Kandy. The floor is very hot during afternoon, so better be there during sunset or mornings. Good place to peacefully spend your time.

The statue of the Buddha is visible from the entire city of Kandy, once you reach the top the view of Kndy city and the lake is visible. Very picturesque and beautiful. No wait time, however you might have to wait a little to take the best picture with the Buddha statue from the center position as the best angle is in the center which is also a walkway for entry and exit. Please note there is a nominal entry fee for the foreigners. And the visit is worth it.

Such a an incredible place to see the scenic view of Kandy.
You can go there with Tuk Tuk. Good to go in the evening. Just like other places in Sri Lanka, you can't wear short, if you do, you can cover with a rope they give you. And you do need to pay a little for entering there.
Behind the Buddha, there's stair to go up there to see the view of Kandy city from above.

Fantastic place, very serene and quite. More authentic then most other Buddha’s. Highly recommended to visit via a Tuktuk city tour. Small entry fee of 300rs only and not very strict regarding clothes.

Access road is newly carpeted and easy access you can get a panoramic view of Kandy City from the temple. Avoid morning traffic and afternoon school traffic if you are visiting. Temple is pretty clean and they are maintaining a separate wash room for Foreigners.

At first it looks like it's just a massive Buddha statue, but once you are inside, there is a lot to explore. It wasn't too crowded and the place is really well maintained. There's also a great view if you take the time to climb the various staircases throughout the grounds. Definitely go if you are in Kandy.

I visited Sri Maha Bodhi Maha Viharaya during my trip to Kandy and I was amazed by the giant Buddha statue that overlooks the city. The statue is 26.83 meters high and depicts Buddha in the meditation pose. It is one of the tallest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka and a symbol of peace and harmony.
The temple is located on a hill called Bahirawakanda, which means "Gnome Mountain". According to legend, the hill was once inhabited by an evil gnome that ate humans, but the villagers appeased it by making sacrifices. Thankfully, those days are long gone and now the hill is a serene and sacred place.
The temple is only 2 kilometers from the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which is another must-see attraction in Kandy.
I removed my shoes and hat and entered the temple premises. The statue was impressive from every angle and I felt a sense of awe and reverence. I climbed up the stairs behind the statue and enjoyed the panoramic view of Kandy city. It was especially beautiful at night, when the city lights twinkled like stars.
I highly recommend visiting Sri Maha Bodhi Maha Viharaya if you are in Kandy. It is a spiritual and cultural experience that you will not forget.

In Kandy, Sri Lanka, this temple is home to the largest sitting Buddha statue. You must take off your sandals before entering the temple, and women must cover their knees and elbows. When we went, there was a 300 LKR entrance fee.
On top of the mountain, where the temple is located, there is a lovely view and a serene atmosphere.
ABIN MATHEW — Google review
A bit underwhelming. Feels more like a tourist attraction than a working temple. Impressive enough Buddha statue, nice views but many more spectacular views around Sri Lanka. Like most tourist sites in Sri Lanka there is a two tiered pricing system. 300 rupees entry fee for non Sri Lankans but free to Sri Lankans regardless of how rich you might be! Constantly pestered for more donations while walking around which somewhat spoils the experience

You feel very far from the city chaos once you start to climb the hills. It’s very easy to walk from the city center! And when you get there you feel like you are in a another world. Upon entering the vihara, you are greeted by the soothing atmosphere, inviting contemplation and inner peace. The intricate architecture and meticulous details of the temple showcase the rich cultural and religious heritage it embodies.
The expansive grounds surrounding the vihara provide a peaceful escape from the bustling city, allowing visitors to connect with nature and spirituality simultaneously. The well-maintained gardens and ancient trees add to the overall sense of sacredness.
The resident monks exude warmth and hospitality, offering guidance and insight for those seeking a deeper understanding of Buddhism. The chanting and rituals create a harmonious ambiance, making it an ideal place for meditation and reflection.
The shrine itself is a masterpiece of artistry and devotion, with its ornate decorations and sacred relics. The aura of reverence within the main hall is palpable, making it a truly special place for devotees and visitors alike.
In conclusion, Sri Maha Bodhisattva Maha Vihara is not just a temple; it's a spiritual retreat where the soul finds solace. Whether you are a devout follower or a curious traveler, this sacred site in Kandy is a must-visit, offering a profound and enriching experience.

The Sri Maha Bodhi Temple, nestled in the historic city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, beckons with an aura of profound spirituality and timeless reverence. As one of the holiest sites in Buddhism, this sacred sanctuary boasts the illustrious Bodhi tree, a direct descendant of the fig tree under which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment over 2,500 years ago. While the temple provides a serene setting for contemplation and spiritual reflection, the overall visitor experience may be deemed modest by discerning travelers. Despite this, the temple's enduring significance as a bastion of Buddhist heritage and devotion continues to draw pilgrims and seekers from around the globe, affirming its place as a cornerstone of Sri Lanka's cultural and religious tapestry

If you've visited Kandy you will definitely see this HUGE Buddha on the hill top. We decided to walk. Tutuk drivers said it was a mountain to climb but it's definitely not.
Probably takes about 30 minutes to walk up hear without pushing it too hard. Roads are smooth and not actually the steepest. If you've done Sigiriya or Dambulla Caves up and down steps then this should be no problem.
Think it cost around 200LKR to get into and has wonderful views over Kandy. You can climb up behind the Buddha to have an elevated view. If you don't want to walk back there are various TukTuks around.

Kandy viewpoint (Arthur's seat) is one of the famous tourist place in Kandy. This scenic location is located just 1km southwest of the Sri Dalada Maligawa (The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) . The viewpoint is situated at an elevation of 550M (1804ft) above sea level. It offers panoramic view of kandy lake, The Sri Dalada Maligawa (The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic), and the city center.

Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is a significant pilgrimage site in Sri Lanka. It is home to a revered tooth relic of Buddha, housed within a gold casket shaped like a stupa. During puja, visitors can witness this heavily guarded sacred space. The temple complex also includes smaller temples, shrines, and museums within the royal palace grounds.
Kandy's main attraction is the Church of the Tooth. In the complex of buildings often used by the locals, we can also admire wonderful statues, a shrine and the beautiful ceremony of the flower offering of the believers. It’s worth going there for the morning opening because the COVID situation has gathered a serious crowd in the morning. The doors to the relic open when we were there at 10:30, or even sometime in the afternoon. Seeing the commitment of the believers, it was not by chance that the local rulers fought for the possession of the tooth. What is so enchanting is the way the people of Sri Lanka await their line in front of the altars with quiet reverence, respect and discipline. The picture with the two monks is one of my best photos :))

Many antique buildings, furniture etc. you can see here. There is a big history behind the temple. Tickets for foreigners is Rs.2000. The ticket machines do not give change. The temple's serene atmosphere and the rhythmic chanting of prayers create a peaceful ambiance, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the spiritual experience.
While the actual tooth relic is not visible to the public, the temple's ornate interior and the devotion of the worshippers provide a profound insight into the significance of the relic to Buddhists worldwide.
Overall, a visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a must for anyone interested in exploring Sri Lanka's religious and cultural heritage. It's a place of spiritual significance and historical value, offering a unique and enlightening experience for travelers from all walks of life.

A large temple with history depicted in the main hall. The museum at the first and second floors were informative. They also have app which helped us a bit to understand the temple very well.
One has to prepare to walk a lot. Not wheelchair accessible. If you are a foreigner, then pay a lot money for entry which is worth. You can spend half a day here, but no refreshments available within the premises. Once you come out, can't use the same expensive entry pass even after a few hours. Prepare yourself to stay inside for a while.

The temple itself is really nice and unique, but the way they manage the tourist flows is frustrating. Infinite queues, not a single sign to direct the visitors (we had no idea where to go), ATM for donations in the middle of the temple (I found it inappropriate for a self declared spiritual and “non-materialistic” place).
Also we didn’t have the chance to see the tooth because there were too much people and the line was too long.

‘Dalada Maligawa’, Temple of the Tooth Relic is located in the Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Lord Buddha. It’s a world Heritage site, mainly due to the temple and the relic also the Kandy lake. Faces with a beautiful view and with the lake breeze it’s an amazing place to be. Such a calm place when there’s less crowd. It feels good both mentally and physically to be in that magical place.

Sri Dalada Maligawa also know as the temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is one of the most important religious site in Sri Lanka. This is located in the city of Kandy, this temple is considered sacred by Buddhists as it houses a tooth relic of Lord Buddha.
The main highlight of this place is you have opportunity to view the sacred tooth relic. However, you have to wait and queue up to this because at most of times this place is very crowded. Best time to visit this place is early morning around 5 am.
The temple also houses the museum that provides a deeper understanding history and significance of the tooth relic.
One of most awe-inspiring aspects of the Sri Dalada Maligawa is the annual Esala perahara festival, which take place in July or August. This one of most popular tourist attractions in Sri Lanka. So if you visit Sri Lanka on that period this is one of best recommendation to take part it.
Overall, a visit to Sri Dalada Maligawa is a must for anyone interested in Sri Lankan history, culture and Buddhism. The serene atmosphere, stunning architecture and a chance to witness the sacred tooth relic is a unique and memorable experience

We visited during the perahera days and were lucky to get in before they close the entrance to the public. It's the first time I've seen this place with such calm and less people.
Security checks are present at the entrance. No short dresses or shorts allowed.

The Tooth Temple, situated on the picturesque shores of Kandy Lake, stands as one of the city's most significant attractions. This ancient temple is famous for safeguarding a sacred tooth believed to be that of Gautam Buddha. Its historical and architectural beauty, along with the numerous museums within its campus, make it a compelling destination. While it can get quite crowded, especially during the rainy season, and walking barefoot can be a challenge, the experience of visiting this temple is undeniably worthwhile.

This location is a place of worship and reverence, with its own set of rules, particularly regarding attire, such as wearing white. I believe it's acceptable, considering this place isn't intended for nature observation but holds cultural significance. If you disagree with the rules, it's preferable to avoid it instead of criticizing, given that there are numerous other places in Kandy without strict regulations.

This is a beautiful place. Lots of interesting parts like the orchid room, some open garden that were meticulously created and give you an amazing feeling to be in.
Lots of green everywhere.
Great place for a picnic or if you are a plant lover.
Expect full park in the weekends but still lots of areas you can find to seat and relax.

Good temple where the canine tooth of Budha kept. Usually crowded with visitors especially foreigners as this is one of the holiest places at Kandy. Lot of space around this temple for the visitors to relax. 1500 srilankan rupees is charged for the citizens from SAARC counties and 2000 for those from other countries. Worth visiting the temple if you have been at Kandy.

❤️ I really enjoyed my experience here, I came with my family and it was really special!
😄 The whole grounds are very nice, you can walk around and admire the beauty, both inside the temple and the outside grounds are gorgeous. You will have to remove your shoes and wear clothing to cover your knees and shoulders.
☸️ It is a very sacred site as it is said to contain a tooth relic of the Buddha which is encased in a golden casket (shaped like a stupa). For local people and Buddhist followers from all around the world, it is an incredibly important and special place to come for prayer or offerings, a tradition formed that said whoever possessed the relic had the divine right to rule the land. Me and my mum also saw and heard monks in a hall chanting which was a very beautiful and blessed experience. It started to rain and to watch the raindrop drip from the lower shrine was magical! There is gorgeous artwork and artifacts that make this an even more interesting place!
✌️ If you are not religious in any way, this maybe will be far less interesting to you and maybe not worth the 2000 lkr entry (for non SAARC foreigners.) If you have an interest then it is of course worth a visit! There are also tour guides available which Im sure would provide knowledge to add to the interest of the temple. You can also check out the International Buddhist Museum which lives behind the temple and I found to be very fascinating.
Enjoy your visit here, much love, Ayuobowan ❤

The Tooth Temple in Kandy is a special place with a Buddha relic. You need security checks and modest clothing. The temple has a cool history, nice design, and quiet inside with prayers. Go upstairs for a nice view. Gardens around are calm with playful monkeys. It recognised by UNESCO. It's an old, crowded temple, but it's cool, especially with museums inside.

Kandy Lake is an artificial waterbody that is considered a sacred relic of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth.
The lake was made back in 1807 and is one of the best places to visit for a walk or jog along. The shady area next to the temple offers its guests a view of the whole city.
There are many temples near the waterbody, but the lake was built to beautify the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. The lake is surrounded by lush greenery and a picturesque mountain stands tall right behind the hydric beauty.
There are numerous things that tourists can do in the city. Tourists can go for a calming long walk, a fast-paced jog along the shores or a boat ride on the Kandy Lake in their free time.

Dominating the town is Kandy Lake. A leisurely stroll around it, with a few stops on the lakeside seats, is a pleasant way to spend a few hours, although diesel-spurting buses careening around the southern edge of the lake can mar the peace somewhat. My wife and I are Sri Lankan and a colleague/friend of ours visited Sri Lanka while we were there, so we took him to see Glenloch. He got a tour of the factory and the nice lady showed him the process the tea goes through after it’s plucked to the point it is packaged. He also was able to try tea plucking. This is a very nice place to visit and learn about Ceylon tea. They also allow you to taste many types of tea. They have the largest selection of teas for purchase that I’ve ever seen in one location in Sri Lanka. I really liked their tea shop because in one place we could purchase every type of tea we wanted. I will bring many of our friends who are visiting from the USA to see Glenloch. There's a gentleman called Mr.Perera selling his drawings which starts from Rs.300 upto Rs.5000, and please carry some cash if you want to help an artist. The pathway is well maintained by the hotel and if you like you can use the very scenic open restaurant for your food & beverage needs.

Ramboda Falls is a breathtaking sight, well worth the challenging hike. I recommend closing your eyes just before the last 3-4 steps to the viewpoint and then opening them to a magnificent view that will surely make you say 'wow.' The waterfall itself is stunning, and the cliff is truly gigantic. The path from start to finish is well-built with steps and stairs, mostly through a forest covered with bamboo and lots of greenery, only few steps are open to the sun, making the hike cooler and more enjoyable. The entrance fee is 100 rupees for local adults, and I believe it's 200 rupees for foreign tourists. It should be defenetly more than a 1km climb for the top, however as per the entrance guys it's only 700m from the entrance. Definitely worth the climb!.

What struck me immediately was the sheer beauty of the surroundings. The cascading water, framed by lush greenery, created a mesmerizing scene that felt straight out of a postcard. This is a elegant waterfall height around 100m and created by a tributary of Kotmale oya. Have to climm about 40 minutes to the hill top and then you would be able to access. A magnificent view is around the waterfall. A viewpoint is located to watch around. Staircases are build and can acess easily.

You can see the water from the road, but you have to climb up to see the Waterfall.
Only 50 rupee tickets for locals
You can see the beauty of the waterfall while you are climbing the stairs.
You can either climb up to the top or stop a few more steps below the top and climb down the other side to see the bottom view.
When we visited, the water flow was very good and it's a treat for your heart and soul!😍😇

We had a really wonderful walk up to Ramboda Falls. We passed through Ramboda Tunnel and eventually finished up the viewing point where we could see at least five waterfalls off in the distance. If you are going to the Damro Labookellie Tea Centre and Tea Garden and this is a must stop place especially for the views from the platform.

We loved thos waterfall the most on our travels in Sri Lanka. Not too touristy, beautiful, just a 15 minute hike from the road, and my kids loved the enormous splash padPS: you have to climb over some rocks to get to the water at the fall

I travelled with my husband and family many times whenever we travel to Nuwara Eliya during our vacation.
Ramboda is a beautiful destination with many waterfalls and a beautiful view extending towards Kotmale valley, having Kotmale Reservoir and Mahaweli Maha Seya.
Ramboda Falls is situated in Pussellawa in the Nuwara Eliya district. It is 109 meters high and is the 11th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and is definitely worth seeing.
For those who love nature and wouldn’t mind a trek, there’s a 2 km trail uphill that leads to this amazing site.
If you are a bird watcher, making your way to the waterfall offers so many opportunities to spot a few rare birds in the trees chirping away at their merry song. If you are ready for some adventure, put on your hiking shoes and set off on an awe-inspiring journey.

Fantastic waterfalls and great view. About 700 odd steps to climb to reach the top. Tricky jungle way. Recommend proper climbing shoes and a wind cheater

Ramboda ella falls is an amazing waterfall located in the Pussallawa area.
There are two access paths to the waterfall, one is located to the upper side of the waterfall. There is a wooden attic near the waterfall. You have to climb down to the view point through the tea state. The road is not good and can't get closer look at the waterfall.
The second path is located on the Nuwara Eliya - Gampola road near the Ramboda tunnel. Need to get a ticket and there's a small hike to the waterfall. Can get much better and closer look than the upper view point.
Anyway people say that the water level can get higher instantly. So bathing is a little bit risky. But there are many tourists near the waterfall every time.
If you are going Nuwara Eliya to Gampola through the Kothmale Ramboda Ella falls is an amazing waterfall situated close to the road. Take your time and enjoy. Stay safe.

To access the pathway leading down a steep hill and staircase, you'll need to purchase a ticket at the hotel counter, priced at 100 LKR per adult. Please be aware that this route is not suitable for elderly individuals with knee problems or those using wheelchairs. The hotel takes good care of maintaining the pathway, and if you wish, you can enjoy a meal or drinks at the picturesque open restaurant during your visit.

This park opens around 8:30 am and the ticket price for locals are Rs. 50/- Parking is available outside the park by the road where you have to pay a parking fee to the ticket attendant.
If you are a bird photographer, highly recommend going at 7am or 4pm as there are a lot of migrant and local birds during that time. Since the ticket counter is not open at 7am, you can leave your Identity card with the security guard and go in and pay the ticket counter when you leave and collect your ID card in return.
The park usually gets very crowded during weekends and he day time. If yo love flowers, then the best time to visit is in April when all the flowers are in full bloom.
Average time you can spend inside the park is around 1 hour. They have toilets and and a small canteen (Food shop) inside the park.

This Victoria Park charges 500 rupees, foreigners and locals alike. Decided to go for this one instead of the other bigger one as they overcharge foreigners (2000 rupees) for a public garden.
This park is smaller but still has a good variety of colourful flowers livening up the place. Good for a 30-40 min stroll.

This park is really beautiful one. Full of greenery, a variety of plants could be seen. Of course when I went in Feb, they were planting flowers plants, I am sure after two to three months it would be heaven. Very peaceful, you can relax there. For foreigners they charge 500 rupee (1.5 dollars) not a big amount when we see the beauty. Place is clean and neat, except the river which flows..of course they are not responsible for it.
Thanks for the gardeners those who really take care of the place. Worth visiting.

Just don't feel fair when the ticket for foreigners is 500 Rs, 5 times more than locals (100 Rs). It would be helpful if there was more information or map... or maybe just a bottle of water included in the ticket.

A small green and lush park at the heart of Nuwara Eliya; well maintained to create a serene and relaxing atmosphere.
Since we were tourists, we could manage a brief walk into the park. If I live here for two to three days, I would have loved to devour a book while picnicking.
Not a must for tourists unless you want to unwind and relax without much physical strain.

The environment is really nice. But there was nothing much to worth watching buying a ticket for Rs. 250. There was a huge crowd during our visit as it was a holiday. Only some cows, studs, calves, goats and rabbits could be seen in the farm, none of the production processes were not shown for the public.
Price of a local ticket was Rs. 250 and for foreigners Rs. 500. There was a discounted price for school children.
There is a huge parking where more than 100 vehicles could be parked. There is a long distance to walk to watch all the animals except cows. Better to take a cap.
There are shops inside to buy Ambewela products and some fast food and beverages. These shops also accept credit cards. But the discounted prices of Ambewela products were almost ariund 5-10%

The climatic and economical conditions in Ambewela make it an ideal location for dairy farming, hence the country's only milk powder factory is situated in this area. The two animal husbandries, Ambewela Farm and New Zealand Farm, have Ayrshire cattle and Friesian cows respectively. The drive from Nuwaraeliya is scenic the travellers can drop by to have a cup of hot milk at the Cafe. Unfortunately due to covid the farm doesn't allow public to go inside and check out the cattle and dairy processing.

Mesmerizing nature with beautiful mountains and greenery all around. This is by far one of the best national parks Sri Lanka has to offer. The rich biodiversity makes this an interesting place.
Of course, it is most renowned for the world's end, mini world's end and the bakers fall all of which are must see places. It would take 3-4 hours to cover the entire loop (depends on how fast you walk).
Be prepared for the cold, if you are trekking in the morning but plastics/polythene is not allowed.
The best time to visit would be early morning 6-10am to both avoid the crowd and to see world's end without any obstructions from the mist. As later on (after 11-12 noon) mist would start to settle in).

Absolutely loved this place. I can see in some of the other reviews some negative points about the ticket counter, but we had a really positive experience and the exchange rate used was spot on (we checked on the way to the park to make sure). The ticket man was friendly, so a good start.
As for the price? I truly don’t think it’s expensive but I guess that’s subjective. You pay the same price for two cocktails in London and only gain a headache from that! The park itself was spotlessly clean and breathtaking. I applaud the park keepers for checking bags and removing plastics (apart from water bottles - but even the labels come off!). So many different things to see on the walk/hike. Unfortunately we did not see any animals, and the view from worlds end was completely cloudy, but we did get a good view from mini worlds end. A world class heritage that everyone on the planet must visit and feel the spirited breath in the Horton Plains. Two main entrance, one is from Ohiya road and other entrance from Pattipola. The national park opens at 6.00am till 6.00pm. But entrance to the park limited only till 3.00pm if I'm not wrong.
Three main trains; Thotupalakanda, Kirigalpoththa and World's end trails.
World's end trail about 5km+ and with the speed and the time you spend as a nature lover it varies between 3 hours to 5 hours to complete the trail.
Morning hours and the evening hours are the best to feel the coldness of the nature. The cloud forest will give you amazing experience.
Officers doing there best to protect the nature and no polyethene allowed to the park and which is wise decision.
Just as a tip, follow the left side from the world's end starting point junction which will not give you much tired for your journey.
Make sure to protect the nature and do not bring any thing from Horton plains and make sure to keep only the footstep there.

One of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka, Horton Plain is a very famous tourist spot. From now on, the officers will carry out a very high level of environmental control and dispose of plastic polythene etc. very properly and without giving any space to carry them inside, therefore the environment there will be very clean and minimum pollution. Some days there are very thick fogg so be aware of the weather conditions before visiting.
In this, it is possible to visit places like Baker's Falls, Little World's End, and besides, animals like elks can also be seen in abundance. Be careful not to destroy the environment when you visit this

The most magical looking place to be for nature lovers. cold climate but the sun was shining bright and day we went it was clear with no mist. the pathway to worlds end is somewhat difficult but rewarding once you reach it. There is a canteen at the entrance if you want to eat something. Snacks are allowed but cannot take plastic bottles or food wrapped in polytene. You can see plenty of little birds and Sambar
Deers and If you are lucky enough can get a glimpse of a leopard as well 🐆 Horton plains can be claimed to be one of the most beautiful places to visit in Sri Lanka.

Beautiful landscape, very peaceful and fun! There are deers but we saw all of them before entering the trek which was weird. The big setback is the entrance price. It feels way overpriced in my opinion.
Sidenote, any food with plastic bags such as snacks or nylon bags is not allowed and they check the bags so be aware of that.
Also the path is circular and it seems that going counter-clockwise (starting from the right side) is easier to take.
Lastly, it's better to start the hike when the park opens (6 am) because at noon the place gets really hot. So start early and bring a light jacket for the first hour or so.

This pristine plateau, standing at an elevation of around 2,100 meters above sea level, is renowned for its unique landscape, abundant biodiversity, and stunning natural features.
One of the most iconic and awe-inspiring attractions within Horton Plains is "World's End," a sheer precipice that drops nearly 1,200 meters, offering a vertigo-inducing view of the lush lowlands below. Trekkers and nature enthusiasts flock to this spot early in the morning to witness the mesmerizing sunrise over this sheer drop.
The park's varied terrain includes rolling grasslands, cloud forests, and crystal-clear streams, providing a habitat for numerous species of flora and fauna. It is home to many endemic species, including the elusive Horton Plains slender loris, sambar deer, and a variety of bird species.
Horton Plains is crisscrossed with a network of well-maintained hiking trails that allow visitors to explore its natural wonders. The most popular hike is the approximately 9-kilometer circular route that takes you through key attractions like World's End, Baker's Falls, and Mini World's End. Most people come here to see Worlds End and Bakers Falls. It is a scenic location but as others comment at $36 (you must pay in cash), it's an expensive and busy 3hr hike. If you come at dawn (6am) as recommended to get clear views, you could also hike to Kirigalpotta, Sri Lanka's 2nd highest mountain which will be much quieter... We didn't do it as we arrived later and you have to start this path before 11am! But you need to agree it with your taxi in as they need to wait while you are in the park. Single use plastics are not allowed (other than water).

Horton Plains National Park sits in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, just 32 kilometers away from Nuwara Eliya. Getting there is a treat in itself, as you can take the Boralanda-Ohiya road, known as one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful routes, or the Nuwara Eliya-Ambewela road.
When you arrive, you’ll need to buy a ticket at the counter. It costs 400 rupees for a vehicle and 150 rupees for a local adult, including VAT.
The park’s main attractions include Mini World’s End, Great World’s End, and Baker’s Waterfall. To see them, you’ll have to hike along a 9-kilometer trail, which takes about 3.5 to 4 hours for the average adult. If you’re with older or younger folks, it might take longer.
This isn’t your usual walk in the park. The trail is steep and narrow, which can be tough if you’re not used to exercising. Plus, there’s no mobile signal, adding to the adventure. Personally, I found it challenging and maybe not worth it.
Since it’s a tough journey, make sure to bring water and snacks. At the checkpoint, they’ll check your bag and take away any polythene items, giving you paper covers for your snacks. Also, they don’t allow energy drinks like Redbull or Milo.

After all very good place to visit recommended for everyone but small children may find it difficult and it will even be hard to cary them considering it has about 6km+ and very hard paths (the hardest path is the path from mini worlds end to start) and I had a great time visiting this place and enjoying it so I recommend you guys too.😉🗻

Horton Plains National Park in Sri Lanka is a breathtaking natural wonder that left me in awe. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna, with stunning landscapes ranging from lush forests to expansive grasslands. The highlight of my visit was the iconic World's End viewpoint, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mist-covered mountains.
Exploring the park on foot was a memorable experience, with well-maintained trails leading to picturesque spots like Baker's Falls, where the cascading waterfalls provided a refreshing break during the hike. The park's unique ecosystem, including endemic species like the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, adds to its allure for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.
The cool climate and fresh mountain air made the visit even more enjoyable, and the knowledgeable guides provided valuable insights into the park's ecology and history. Although the trek can be challenging at times, the stunning scenery and opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting make it all worthwhile.

Overall a really enjoyable time and felt like we had the whole place to ourselves for the most part.

Bakers fall all 3 places are very beautiful, the total hike may take about 4 hours, they would not let you take plastic item but if biscuits or other snacks they will provide a paper bag so you can take your food and enjoy.

A great place for nature lovers. You get to see birds, Sambar deer and many other animals. If you are really lucky you could even get to see the Sri Lankan leopard as well. Best you prepare yourself with proper wear for the Walk. Do not bring any sort of plastic and it is prohibited. The best time is to come in the morning.

Overall, Horton Plains National Park is a must-visit destination in Sri Lanka for its natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and immersive wildlife experiences. It's a perfect place for adventurers and nature lovers looking to connect with the pristine beauty of Sri Lanka's highlands.

The park will open 6 AM to 4 PM everyday however the entrance gates will close after 2PM since the trial normally takes more than 3 hours you complete (12 KM). Recommended to start early as much as possible if you are planning to do the nature walk. High biodiversity were there don’t bring plastics or polytine.

Total hike take about 4hrs. Better to start early 6 am or in the evening around 4.(Hike will be difficult during day hours. You will not be allowed to take any plastic items. Plastic water bottle is allowed. If you take biscuit they will give paper bags you can remove the plastic bag put the biscuit to the paper bags.
Enjoy 😉.
The Elephant Transit Home (also known as උඩවලව ඇත් අතුරු සෙවන) in Udawalava is an animal protection organization that provides a halfway house for orphaned elephants. With support from the Born Free Foundation, the center rehabilitates these elephants before releasing them back into the wild, often in the Uda Walawe National Park.
Be ready here to not be a part of feeding action, you will be 20 meters near behind the fence.
It’s pretty crowded all the time.
But in general it’s a nice and positive place, they do good helpful job for elephants 🐘

Nice place, there are a lot of baby elephants. Unique experience and we observe there were many foreign tourists also at this place. They really enjoyed at the feeding time to those baby elephants. A must visit place if you travel around Udawalawa.

his facility is indeed dedicated to rehabilitating orphaned elephant calves and preparing them for release back into the wild. Visitors can observe the baby elephants being fed milk and watch them as they roam around the grounds.
Visiting the Elephant Transit Home can be a meaningful and educational experience. Not only do you get to witness the care and rehabilitation efforts for these orphaned elephants, but you also contribute to their welfare through the entrance fee, which supports the facility's operations.
If you're interested in wildlife conservation and enjoy observing animals in their natural habitat, a visit to the Elephant Transit Home could definitely be worthwhile. Just make sure to check the visiting hours and any specific guidelines before planning your trip.

This home is filled with these little cuties. They play around and you get to see them eat, feed by the caretakers. Baby elephants are so extraordinary and to see them so close is an amazing experience. 🐘🐘

Well worth a visit at feeding time. We went for the 10.30 am session and it was nice to see many locals as it was a public holiday. We chose this place because it really is a transit home (and vet sevice) with the aim being to release elephants back into the wild, sometimes in more distant national parks than nearby Uduwalawe, with tracking devices to check their movements and ensure successful integration. Also the animals are respected as wild animals, so there is no patting etc.

This is a place you should definitely visit in Sri Lanka! I really enjoyed watching the baby elephants drinking milk. They behave like babies, it's very cute how they act together.
It is very hot, I would suggest taking sunscreen.

Amazing place! There is some construction work being done around and the place on its own needs some work. But you don't go to this place to admire the building. You come here to see baby elephants being fed. Baby elephants who lost their mothers. They are being looked after here with no human physical contact so they can be released into thebwild again when they are 6yo. After that they are being monitored for 2 years to make sure they cope in the nature.
Here you can watch them being fed with milk from distance. There are 3 "show" times daily (10.30am, 2.30pm and 6pm).
Looking after these animals is very pricey and by purchasing ticket and watching them you support this beautiful cause.

Place to look after baby elephants who have missed their mother or herd, until they are able to live by them selves. since they are being prepared for the jungle, they are having minimum human exposure and contacts. You can watch they are fed with milk from distance. Evey day that is done in a ground. There is a stage built for this. They make sure every elephant gets milk.
There are 3show times per day where you can see they are fed with milk. You have to target show time to arrive unless you have to wait a long. Place have its own parking and has easy access from main road. There is nothing much to see. There is a information center but is has only poster boards. They could have done a better job. Thats the reason i give 4 star.

Baby elephants who lose their mother's love in the wild are brought here, nurtured and released into the wild. In this stall, you can watch the baby elephants being milked and how happily they spend their days. Located on the border of Udawalawa Reservoir. There is a fee to visit and there is an allotted time to watch the baby elephants being fed. Your donations to this station will be used for animal welfare. You can name it as a must visit place if you are visiting the area.

A must visit place for all lovers of elephants and wild-life. It's a transit home for displaced, injured, orphaned, etc. elephants to be rehabilitated before being released to forest. You can contribute for the expenses. A wealth of knowledge about elephants and how to protect them, can be gained by visiting the museum/information centre on-site.

Ticket for foreigner is 1813 LKR , it's quite expensive. Local is 100 LKR 😁😁 (February 2023) This public feeding is done twice a day and the entrance fee goes towards the upkeep on the home. There is also an interesting little museum explaining about the cycle of elephants and the difference between Sri Lankan and African elephants

The baby elephants, who are predominantly orphaned from the jungle, are super cute! This place is an excellent trip for elephant lovers or families. You get to see feeding time, which is really entertaining. The way the babies run up for the milk is so cute. This is a great cause worth supporting, so please consider visiting. Can get crowded, but you are able to see clearly even if it’s busy!

The elephant sanctuary is easily accessible by vehicle and is a good place to visit before going on a safari. You can watch the elephants being fed from a separate viewing stand. There is also a small museum and information center about elephants on the premises. It's very suitable for children and it's fun to see the baby elephants.

Best place to see elephant in the wild. They seem to treat the elephants very good here compared to other elephant orphanage centers. After the feeding they let the elephants free in the wild, which is very nice to see and know. With your ticket you contribute with 100% to the feeding expenses for the elephants. We payed 5 USD/Person

Saw some of the reviews here on beating elephants with sticks. I feel those are exaggerated reviews because they use a stick to control elephants when feeding them. Those are not whips. And near the observation deck the authority has displayed an explanatory note on why they use sticks on baby elephants. My feeling is it's good to have a place like this to look after orphaned elephants rather than let them die stranded in the wild
As a visitor you can watch them feed elephants for about half an hour and that's the only thing you can do here. Good for kids.

I came back twice, and this says it all!
It’s so heartwarming to see the little elephants running to get milk and trying to sneak back in the queue for a second round.
Beautiful experience in a place that respects the elephts and doesn’t allow people to interact.
They work to reintroduce them in the wild, which is what all conservation efforts should look like!
Go visit, it’s well worth it! (Only 5$!)
As of Jan 2024 the feeding times are 10:30am, 2:30pm, 6pm and it all lasts about 30min
The evening was way less crowded than the morning. Sunday morning was packed.
Arrive 15-30min earlier.

Elephant feeding done thrice at the Transit Home during the day here at 10:30am,2:30pm & 6pm . Tickets bought at the counters with separate queue for locals & foreigners. The feeding lasts for approximately 30-35 mins and is interesting to see baby elephants getting priority for milk feed followed by greens . Ample space at the steps for Sitting under the shade . Plenty of Cafe’s at the entrance of the facility . It was a good stopover !

They take up orphaned elephants and raise them until they are old enough to survive in the wilderness on their own.
Contact between humans and elephants is kept to a minimum, so the elephants don't get to used to people.
Visitors cannot interact with the orphans, which is very good.

Great attractions. Hilarious to see how baby elephant calves complain when refused to give more milk. Sad to see many orphaned and injured. Viewing platform is shaded areana of concrete stepping for seats. Bringing personal cushion will help.Toilet facilities seems new and clean. Entrance and ticket counter need improvement for user friendly operation. One Cafe on premises and few across the road.

Udawalawe National Park Safari is a vast nature reserve spanning 30,821 hectares in Sri Lanka that boasts an array of native wildlife, such as elephants and water birds. The park is home to herds of wild buffalo, sambar and spotted deer, giant squirrel, making it one of the country's finest national parks. With its lightly vegetated terrain, game-watching is made easy for visitors who want to observe the park's natural beauty.
It was the first Safari in my life. We rented a jeep for three hours, which is enough time to enjoy the views and animals. We met about 10 lone elephants and two herds of elephants. Great variety of birds. By the river we saw deer, buffaloes. It is forbidden to get out of the jeep, feed and touch the animals. There is a stop by the river to take photos.

After going on a safari in Udawalawe National Park for myself, I discovered that it wasn’t exactly what all of the rumors and blogs say. In fact, there are a few things you should know about going on a safari in Udawalawe National Park before you go!
So without further ado, here is my honest TRUTH about visiting Udawalawe National Park including what to expect from a safari and more!
On a safari in Udawalawe National Park, you will undoubtedly see elephants. In fact, chances are that you will see many of them – babies, too!
Udawalawe National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s smaller national parks at only 308.2 km². It is estimated that within this space over 500 elephants live. It’s simple really, a smaller space with a higher density of elephants increases your chances of seeing them!
On my safari through Udawalawe National Park, we saw tons of elephants! Within minutes of entering the park, I saw a group of about 7 elephants. Then, throughout the safari, we saw many more including a mother with two babies (one was very small) as well as large male elephants crossing the road only meters from our jeep!
The jeep drivers/guides all want you to tip them, so they work hard to find you as many animals as possible.

If you want to see Elephants, you have to visit Udawalawe! We saw many elephants eating, roaming, bathing and relaxing! The park has a calming atmosphere with a variation in scenery. The number of elephant herds here is incredibly high.
Can recommend the safari tour to everyone.

Way too much expensive for a 3 hours tour and the worst was when the guide (that we didn't ask for but just jumped in the jeep and said it was included with the entrance ticket) kept insisting at the end for getting a big tip as it was something mandatory :( Nope

We had a wonderful few hours adventuring here with Crocodile Safaris.
When we first drove in, I didn’t have high expectations. We immediately encountered a number of elephants and the cynic in me thought they were being coached to hang out there.
But as we headed deeper into the park, getting off the beaten track, we were blown away.
Our driver was so sharp eyed, he spotted elephants, birds, a fox and he even stopped to point out a chameleon! It took a while for us to see it!
But the best of all, seeing the baby elephant feeding from its mama. What a surreal magical moment.

At Ella Rock Trailhead, visitors can enjoy various hiking options such as climbing Mini Adams Peak or Ellas Rock and exploring the tea plantation. The area also offers attractions like Ravana Ella waterfalls and the nine arch bridge. However, it is important to be cautious of local signage as it may lead one astray. A guide is recommended for a better experience. After crossing the bridge, visitors can take a dip in the river to cool off.
A nice nature trail. Fantastic view to the top of the rock. Bit of hard track to walk but really interesting.
A juice stall and Rotti stall on the top of the cliff was a great help to climbers which were functioning by few villagers.

So about this hike. It is quite nice and the landscape and view is amazing.
The thing is it's not so easy to find it by yourself as there are no signs and locals try to get you to choose them as guides. Also it's very steep and can be quite slippery, especially when going down. Wear good shoes!!
But even when it's cloudy (like it was when we were there at 6:30) it's still beautiful. I really recommend to go there at sunrise though so you don't have any clouds. Just start really early so you are up at 5:30/06:00 latest.

Great hike this! Super scenic and not too challenging. The hardest part is probably the last 30 minutes as it starts to get pretty steep. I highly recommend downloading a trails app to show you the routes you can take as it can become very unclear at times where you should be walking. You can find the start to this trail by walking along the track from Ella train station for about an hour or so and you will find the start on your left.
You will then walk over a tiny bridge that is over a small waterfall, which then leads through a tea plantation where you will find the workers picking. Really quite beautiful!
Make sure you bring enough water to last you 3/4 hours total, or bring cash as there are locals selling drinks. There is a fee at the top of 930 rupees to see the view, however we just sat around on the benches up there for around 30 minutes and the guard just let us through for free after trying your best haggle is to come in.
Highly recommend this hike!!

If you love living green, then Ella is obviously a place to visit. Ella Rock is one of the place which proves it.
Trekkers would love the place. It’s bit tiring to do the hiking. But it is definitely worth it. Once you got to the summit you will realize why we said so. The panoramic views it provides with mist and cloud covering the area, especially in the early mornings and the late evenings are something you should witness and that would suffice enough to say that you visited Ella.
Total time for climbing up and down is 4 hours. Yes, sounds like a long journey. But the way up there is with full of diversity. If you are starting form Ella train station, you would enjoy the rail walk, and soon as you started climbing up, you will be passing a waterfall, the rubber tree forest and tea plantations.
On a rainy day, it can be slippery, so better be cautious with what you wear for the journey. Wear something suitable for a hiking and towards the end of the hike, route will get bit harder with the steep, still manageable.
Kind request for all the trekkers,
Ella is popular among many people for its echo-liveliness and the calm-countryside atmosphere. So help us protect the area by being responsible on your visit.
Please make sure you don’t throw all those plastic bottles, food wrappers here and there. Bring trash bags and pack out everything you bring in so it can be disposed in an appropriate place. And don’t just stop with your own trash.
We all can be happy when we visit the place next time, if we can see the place looking better than when we got there.

Download a map before you go, I also posted one on Strava. It’s easy to get lost but you really don’t need a guide to go. Entrance is not free, 900lkr.
Or just follow the train tracks to the entrance and there you can follow dogs to the top :). Get some crackers to thank them and they will make sure you go up and down easily like they did for me. I had a full dog guide service until train station.

Ella Rock stands out as one of Sri Lanka's top tourist destinations, especially during the early morning for a breathtaking sunrise. Be cautious of locals attempting scams by misleading you on paths or overcharging for guides. Optimal access is possible by using trains to reach near the trailhead, getting off at Kithal Ella station. Walk 300-500 meters towards Heel Oya direction, turn sharp left at the narrow bridge, proceed through the tea plantation area, and ascend easily without the need for guides. Leeches are minimal, and watch out for high prices at snack shops along the trail.

A must-walk trail. Diverse views and surroundings. Walking on railway, seeing tea plantations, rice fields, waterfall and finally breathtaking views on valley, hills, village and Rawana waterfall is absolute essence of this area.
Tips. Download a OSM map based app and follow directions to Ella rock. Google maps won’t be helpful (sorry Google!) and will get you lost cause trail in lower parts goes through rice fields and tea plantations. And ways to reach final climb are plenty.
Reaching the Ella Rock is 3-part journey. First, starting from Ella you must walk along railway, then find your path though village with little help of locals, then reach the final climb and you’re done. ☑️
Reaching the top. Ella rock view is good but don’t finish there because on south part of mountain there another second view point- even better in my opinion.
Don’t bother if you forget something to eat or drink - local booths on the way won’t leave you hungry or thirsty.

This is the start but take local signage with pinch salt as it gets you lost, which is supposed to, so you need to pay for local guide, who soon pick up on you. After the bridge If your walking across an open padi field you've gone wrong, go back and take the left fork past several any hills up a clearly walked path. When you come back over the bridge take a dip in the river

The full experience is when you get to the trailhead by train track( from Ella train station)
And also don't forget there are 2 viewpoints on top of the hill ( the one further is much nicer)
Dar — Google review
I give it one star because after doing the whole excursion, they make you pay an entrance fee to do only 40 metres and see the view. It would be understandable if the path was well signposted and well maintained but this is not the case. It seems ridiculous to me that they make you pay just to see the view at the end. It really isn't worth paying the entrance fee. The path can be easily followed with a geolocation app, I used Wikilok, and it is not necessary to hire a guide.
Antoni Galbany — Google review
This is a great sign to turn left towards the trail leading up, i would recommend using a flashlight during the night and search for the turn, you know you got it right when you go over a bridge over a waterfall.
When passing the bridge i recommend using the trail on the left going up towards the fields and not turn right towards the jungle.
Use some apps for trails that can help a lot!

One of the best things to do in Ella.Views are best at the sunrise. Can be managed without a guide.30-40 min hike to the top and better to go prepared. If you go by train from Kandy, get off at kithal ella station and it is not uneasy to find the way from there.
there are little snack shops on the way to the top as well.Should not be missed if you are travelling to Ella and ready to experience a bit of hiking.

This trail is just an absolute gem while staying in Ella. It's a must for all hikers/nature lovers who do enjoy hiking. I'd classify it moderate to challenging trail and definitely not suitable for beginners. It starts off easy while walking on the train tracks from Ella town. Takes you through the tea plantations which are absolutely gorgeous until you start some light ascending through the forest. The most challenging and difficult part is the last push through the forest to the summit as it's very gravely with water flowing down through the narrow path where you definitely need to use a lot of balancing, good footwork and scrambling. It's also quite steep so better watch out for your knees.
Sports shoes/trainers are totally ok!
Just to know, at the top, there's a charge of 900LKR per person (foreigners) to go further to see the view and more walking to the other part of the forest.
Best time to set off is super early so you can catch the sunrise on the top.
Overall, it took us around 5hrs with breaks on the top.

Very cool short hike (but not super easy, steep can get slippery also)
Great view
Move to second view point after sunrise it’s not as crowded and also beautiful

A really great place to watch the sunrise. The hike is a little bit hard but shouldn't take more than 1 hour. We used the Google map to find the route for walking from Ella to the trailhead, but the thing is that you can take a shortcut by walking beside the train track from Ella to kitalElla.

If you’re looking for a breathtaking hiking experience, I highly recommend the Ella Rock trail. This trail offers a stunning landscape, brimming with natural beauty, making it a perfect choice for nature lovers. The difficulty level is low, making it accessible for most hikers. As a tip, remember to bring cash, as there’s a fee of 900 rupees at the top.

Simple hike with amazing views! I took off one star for 2 reasons:
1) there is a 921 Rs ticket charge for the final viewpoint, which is ridiculous and absolutely not worth it, as the best views are on the trail;
2) some locals near the blue house right after the rail track bridge purportedly lead people on the wrong path to scam them into hiring a guide. You do NOT need a guide to do that hike, it is a very simple hike and you cannot get lost!!! Just start the trail at “Ella’s Rock Trailhead” as shown on Google Map!!
Google Map gives the right directions; DO NOT follow the directions given in the Lonely Planet Guide, and DO NOT listen to the locals who will lie to you and tell you that the way to Ella’s Rock starts at the blue house, right after the rail track bridge. It is a scam, they want you to hire a guide because you will have a very hard time finding the way and get lost if you try to use that route, because the path splits into numerous paths and the vegetation is so dense you cannot see where you’re going. Besides, it is a lot more dangerous as it is at the edge of the cliff, you need to climb a lot on that route, and the views are not as beautiful as on the other trail. Some people have fallen to their death on this route, with the latest fatal accident in March 2024.
After the rail track bridge, go past the blue house until you reach Kithal Railway Station, then keep going straight and then take the turn on the left, where Google Map sets the trailhead, where you’ll see a river and rice paddies, then tea plantations. Then all you have to do is keep going straight the whole way (first climb up the tea plantations, then straight ahead). It absolutely does not require a guide, there is only one path and you meet other hikers going up or down every 5 minutes so you can’t get lost. That path is flat for most of the way and super easy, that’s why the locals try to send you to the hard trail instead to force you into getting a guide. Take the Google Map trail, not only it is a lot easier/safer, but the views are also nicer!

Beautiful views (you can see Little Adam's peak and so on) but you have to pay 930rupis to be able to watch it. From the railway station around 2hours up and down
The cooking class Ella Spice Garden Cooking Lessons was a great experience for the family. The host was very knowledgeable and explained everything in detail. They had pictures of spices that were out of season which gave us the chance to smell them. Unfortunately, the cooking class wasn't available, but we still highly recommend it!
My family and I (2 kids, 8 and 9yrs old) participated in the Ella Spice Garden Cooking Lesson and loved it. The lesson was interactive and engaging. The food and ingredients were excellent. Both my children said it was the highlight of their stay in the region! Thank you!

We had an amazing experience! Very interesting, entertaining, engaging and very well organized. At first we had a tour in spice garden, then there was a cooking master class where everyone had a chance to participate and we receive very good explanations and in the end we had dinner all together with the food that we cooked.
I also liked that the recipes were adapted for international audience (not very spicy)

A great cooking course, was really a lot of fun. Starting with the organization and communication, everything went smoothly. Small books with recipes were handed, many and the recipes were sent again afterwards online. Cooking the local food is a completely different experience and tastes even better. You got tips on how to do it at home. The mood during the course was very cheerful and the staff members were absolutely friendly, you even get a guided tour of their own little garden. All in one an absolute and clear recommendation!!

We had a brilliant evening learning authentic Sri Lankan cooking here. The main chef is amazing and clearly so passionate! And his assistants so lovely. It was so well organised and set up, but also you properly get to be involved. Every person is invited to be part of cooking something and the fact you get a full recipe book and other videos / pdf to take home is amazing! We met some lovely people too and sharing our food together at the end was perfect. Delicious and fun night!

It's very well run by Theeka who is clearly a great chef, very friendly and funny guy, and makes sure everyone has opportunity to participate. The guys assisting did a great job too, working hard to ensure the evening ran smoothly and ingredients were prepped properly.
All dishes were super easy to follow and you get a recipe book to take home. I'm looking forward to replicating (especially the 100 bulb garlic curry)!
We met lots of other travelers from all over the world, mingling over some unbelievable food that we'd all helped to cook - what's not to love!

The best (vegan) Sri Lankan cooking class with the friendliest of hosts, Tikka. After walking through his spice garden, learning about how each is grown and harvested, we started cooking our 7 dishes. Every step was explained well, with an interactive book for note taking, as well as plenty of opportunity to get involved in the cooking process. Lots of tips were shared too (like how to easily peel garlic). The food itself was delicious. By far one of the best cooking classes I have been to. Thank you Tikka and team!

Little Adam's Peak is a popular hiking destination in Ella, Sri Lanka. Visitors can climb to higher elevations and explore the tea plantations while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The hike up to the peak is considered easy and recommended for families with children. It takes approximately 30 minutes from the main road to reach it. Additionally, visitors can walk from Adams Peak to the Nine Arch Bridge, which takes around 40 minutes through stunning landscapes.
An easy hike in the darkness took us up 30 min before sunrise. Really recommend it as the effect of the sun reaching over the mountain was surprisingly dramatic.
We went up with two children 9 years old and it was not really a problem. Took us about 30 min from the main road.

I recently visited Little Adam's Peak and was blown away by the breathtaking views. The climb to the top was a challenge, but the views from the top made it all worth it. The mountain stands at a height of 1141 meters and offers plenty of opportunities to capture stunning pictures. I particularly enjoyed visiting the peaceful corner of the mountain where I was able to sit and enjoy the panoramic views. The wind was quite chilly, but the experience was truly exhilarating. I would recommend Little Adam's Peak to anyone looking for an adventure and beautiful scenery.

The best view point in Ella
Little Adams Peak whether considering the word ‘Little’,it is named after the sacred Adams Peak (Sri Pada –where the foot print of Lord Buddha is preserved) regarding the similarity between the two mountains. Therefore the mountain was called as Little Adams Peak.
“Punchi Sri Pada” is another name for this peak. It is 1141 m in height. Little Adam’s Peak attracts many travelers who come to Sri Lanka. Gradually with an easy hike up to the mountain of Little Adams Peak you can consummation a worth panoramic view. You have to walk through lush green tea plantations, waterfalls and paddy fields while enjoying the sceneries.
It will be priceless if you could visit the place in the morning when the clouds roll in. Further places like Little Adams Peak deliberates ‘How far Sri Lanka is worth and rich with beautiful natural destinations of Sri Lankan tourism’. It will feel like a neck exercise for the visitors as you have to rotate your body to seek the views outstanding for 360 degrees.
Ella town is a small town among the up county destinations consisted of waterfalls, caves and geographically significant places. One such place is Adams Peak, figured in Pyramid Shape Mountain which stands opposite of the Ella rock. Be aware not to harm the plants, flowers and animals that will meet on your journey up to the mountain.
You could see the people who are plucking and collecting tea leaves, working in their estates. It will take around 35-45 min to reach to the top of the mountain on a zig- zag path. Thus it is an ideal place to watch sun rise in the morning. With prodigious views of as far as Ella rock and down to the gap will be gorgeous.
It is a must to say that ‘don’t forget to wake up early in the morning and climb the mountain before it gets hot’ otherwise you will feel tired. Although take a bottle of water with you. If you could have a cup of tea or something you may feel better on your way back to the hotel or home.

In Sri Lanka, there is an old Buddhist temple called Buduruwagala. The complex is made up of seven statues that are associated with the Mahayana philosophy. The sculptures are from the tenth century. The massive Buddha statue was formerly vividly painted, as shown by the lengthy orange streak that remains from its original stuccoed garment. It is believed that the central figure among the three to the Buddha's right is the Buddhist mythological character, Avalokitesvara, or the Bodhisattva.

Also if you want to visit the statue from a close distance you have to remove your shoes. Also out of respect. If you look very closely you see on one of the right statues has 6 fingers instead of 5.

We met a local guide who was well aware of the history and is providing the historical background and the importance of the place to all visitors (specially the children).
These creations belong to the Mahayana chapter of Buddhism and apparently were painted originally. Some statues seem unfinished. But well worth a visit due to the aritistic and ancient value as well as the natural beauty of the location.

An ancient Buddhist temple. King Kavantissa built this temple and a large dagoba by treasuring the relics of Lord Buddha. Tissa Lake is located nearby. Therefore, it has been concluded that the village, the temple and the tank were built according to the concept of the Dagaba.

Considered to be one of the largest and most important Buddhist places of worship in the entire island, the Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya is a temple that is hard to miss due to the gargantuan stupa that stands at a height of 156 feet, easily making it the largest temple in the southern region. The temple is believed to date back all the way to the 3rd century BC, during the reign of King Mahanaga of Ruhuna, shortly after Buddhism was established in the island. However, it was King Kavan Tissa that made the temple to its present state in the 2nd century BC.
Why You Should Visit
Ancient scripture also states that the very site the Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya was consecrated by the Lord Buddha himself, during his third visit to the island, making it one of the holiest sites in the Buddhist world. Moreover, this ancient place of worship is surrounded by lush greenery, which makes it stand out from any other building in the area of Hambantota. History has shown that this temple is one of the few temples that was constantly restored by various kings of subsequent kingdoms, even after it was pillaged by invaders from India in the 13th century AD.

It's a sacred place which located in Hambantota District thissamaharama area. It was built by the King kawanthissa around 2nd century B.C. This place was consecrated by Buddha himself with 500 Arhats when the 3rd visit to the Sri lanka. However this place is always crowded with the local and foreign people. We went there during the perahera season. So we were blessed with free refreshments also.

Good and calm ancient sacred place to visit . Had a very pleasent experience .
a historical landmark. Really lovely and serene location. a location that you have to go. Here are specifically two kinds of Buddha statues: one depicts the Buddha later in his life as a monk, and the other shows the Buddha in his younger years as a prince. The fact that a damaged statue was painstakingly restored here is remarkable.

The Maligawila Buddha statue is a standing figure of the Buddha in Sri Lanka, which has been carved out of a large limestone rock during the 7th century by a prince named Aggabodhi. It is the tallest free-standing ancient statue of the Buddha found in the country. It had been broken into several pieces by the time it was found in 1951. The statue was reconstructed and raised again in 1980 under the direction of the then president

A nice tall buddha statue built by king Agghabodhi. With the time the statue had been broken into pieces. In 1991 the statue was reerected. It is said that this is the highest free standing buddha statue in Sri Lanka. (However some say that it should be Awukana statue) Dambegoda bodhisatva statue is also located close to this.
Any vehicle can go upto Maligawila temple parking area. A large parking area is available. You have to walk a few hundred meters through an ancient type garden.

Another marvel of ancient Sri Lanka. This statue is about 12m tall and is similar to the Aukana Buddha statue. It is carved from a single limestone rock. The statue is said to be constructed by a prince named Aggabodhi in the 7th century.
When the statue was found in the 19th century it was fallen and broken to pieces. Restoration attempt took place in 1991. There is also a roof covering in place now for protection.
Within the premises there is also another rock statue of Bodhisattva which can be visited.

Maligawila Buddha’ statue is the tallest free standing statue in the country. It believed to be carved in 7th century by a prince called Aggabhodhi. Opposite to that you will find Dambewela Bhodhisathwa statue. Yet another gigantic caving. Both of these statues are situated in Maligawila temple premises.
Be mindful to use the longest way shown in the google maps, coz the shortest road shown is narrow and bad in shape. The alternative road shown on the map is the main road which is broader and in good in shape.

Temple was peaceful and is located in a huge premises. Buddhist stupa is at a distance.
The strange part however was that Subramanya swamy, Ganapati and all other hindu temples did not have an idol. Instead a curtain containing the image of the god was the deity. Temple authorities said only during prayer times at 0430, 1030, 1830hrs some of the rituals take place.
We visited during the start of summer but it was quite hot so do plan to take your slippers to the stand near the temple.

The jungle shrine of Kataragama located an hours drive away from Yala National Park and has great religious and historical significance that cuts across race and religion that brings together Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians each day to worship at its numerous temples of all faiths located within the sacred city. The town has Ruhunu Maha Kataragama devalaya, a shrine dedicated to the God of Kataragama. Kataragama is situated in the Monaragala District of Uva province, Sri Lanka. It is surrounded by jungle in the South Eastern region of Sri Lanka. The town has a venerable history dating back to the second century B.C, It also was the seat of government of many Sinhalese kings during the days of Rohana kingdom.
At Kataragama Temple Pooja to please God will be held every morning and evening but the best one is the evening pooja commence 7.00 PM every day. You can see everything that is going on at this traditional Pooja. Devotees queuing to make their offerings in the temples with their big trays of fruit to offer to the God. Much noise and clanging whilst a red carpet leads the way for the principal offerings to be made. Usually an ornate procession in itself. Devotees also carrying coconuts which set alight. Devotees stand and make wishes in front of a small area before hurling the coconut inside. If it smashes, and it generally does, so stand back ... it is supposed to be good luck. Similarly, if it doesn't, it represents bad luck. It’s a common sight to experience that how devotees rolling around the floor of the temple complex in a ritual.
Visiting Kataragama, is one of the most exciting and visually splendid places in Sri Lanka.

There are mostly buffaloes, deers, peacocks, and elephants, but you can also find foxes, crocodiles, different types of birds, reindeer, hares, mongoose, wild boar and if you're lucky enough then a leopard too.
However, it's disappointing to know that the bathroom facilities are of poor quality, and there is no proper access to more washrooms within the park, including rest stops but other than that it was a pretty good experience.

Excellent place to visit for tourists who are on to Arugambay. Road network inside the park need to be re constructed as they have badly damaged due to the rains and flood situation. There are great variety of animals to watch including migrated birds. Safari jeep can be taken from the Kumana town. Using the normal vehicle is not advisable and you need a 4 wheel jeep to travel inside the park. There's about 16 km from Kumana town to the park entrance.

If you're seeking a pristine wildlife experience away from crowded safari destinations, look no further than Kumana National Park. I've had the pleasure of visiting this gem countless times, and each visit has been nothing short of extraordinary.
One of the park's most remarkable features is its undisturbed by the constant stream of safari jeeps and crowds found in other popular parks like Yala and Wilpattu. This allows for a truly immersive wildlife encounter, where encounters with majestic creatures unfold in their natural habitat without interruptions.
With the expertise of a skilled safari driver, spotting elusive leopards becomes a thrilling possibility. A sight I've been fortunate enough to witness multiple times. But the wonders of this park extend far beyond leopards. From the sloth bears to the elephants and the wild water buffaloes, every moment here is filled with awe-inspiring encounters with Sri Lanka's diverse wildlife.
Bird enthusiasts will find themselves in paradise within the park's rich avian diversity. During my birding in the park, I was able to see 84 different species in a single safari round including many migratory birds.
The journey to Kumana National Park is an adventure in itself, as you traverse a 20-kilometer buffer zone teeming with wildlife. Along this route, I've been privileged to spot elusive species such as the rusty-spotted cat, crested porcupine, common palm civet, and numerous elephants, adding an extra layer of excitement to the journey.
Adding to its allure, the park houses a historic Hindu temple, adding a cultural dimension to its natural splendor and making it a significant pilgrimage site for Hindu devotees.
In conclusion, the Kumana National Park is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic wildlife experience immersed in the untouched beauty of nature. I highly recommend it to fellow nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers – you won't be disappointed.

Located in the southeast corner of Sri Lanka, the 18,149 hectares Kumana National Park is a well-known eco-tourism attraction and bird sanctuary where a multitude of birds breed and roost. Kumana National Park is the eastern sector of Yala National Park. One of the most significant features of the Kumana National Park is the 'Kumana Villu' - a 200 hectare natural swamp lake, fed by the 'Kumbukkan Oya' through a half mile long narrow channel. It is at this mangrove swamp that many water birds’ nest in May and June. Regular sightings include such species of bird as pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, egrets and little cormorants.
The very rare black-necked stork has also been spotted at the swamp in Kumana National Park. Besides the prolific birdlife, Kumana National Park is also home to some of the mammals found in the larger Yala National Park, such as Elephants and Leopards. The vegetation in Kumana National Park consists mainly of mangrove trees, kumbuk trees and the karan fern, as well as the open marsh area. If you are on a bird watching tour in Sri Lanka, Kumana National Park is an 'absolute must'.

I was incredibly lucky to find out about Amigo Surf School through a friend of mine and was able to get a private surf lesson the same day. All of the staff are trained and are excellent surf instructors, however I found myself incredibly lucky to have Sintharu as my teacher.
Not only was he incredibly skilled and a great teacher, but he was incredibly kind and flexible with the lessons (I had been sick the previous week and was much weaker than I usually was, but he completely catered the whole lessons for how I was feeling on the day). The school tries to keep you with the same teacher which helps with the training too.
We had an abasolutely excellent time and my surfing improved so much in just three lessons, eradicating some bad habits I'd learned from surfing over the years with no training. He went above and beyond and was always encouraging. He went above and beyond and even helped me the next day when all of the ATMs in Aragum Bay decided to crash on check-out day.
The school itself felt like a community and I felt very lucky to have crossed paths with Sintharu who made my surfing experience in Aragum Bay so worthwile. Highly reccomend. :)

Missing you guys and wish you all the best!

I had an amazing time at SAFA surf camp! Favas was an amazing host and surf teacher, super friendly and inclusive, very relaxed and easy going. His team, Nilu, Nowas, Rahim and the Chef were all awesome too, they made the place feel like home. The accommodation is right in the beach in cute little cabanas, minimalistic but having everything you need. Perfect spot to relax, catch some green water, and even go on a 'surf-ari'. Thanks for your hospitality!

What an amazing place!! Fawas the proprietor is so friendly, helpful, kind and knowledgeable! We stayed here for a week as a surf group and had a wonderful time! We even came back a month later (sadly Safa was fully booked so we stayed nearby, but came back as friends to see Fawas, he even did an impromptu cookery class with us one evening and had a fun time playing Carrom).
Right on the beach front so can walk out into the sea, and even surf foamies right in front of the hotel on bigger swells. You can also see main point surf break from here so have an idea if waves are pumping.
Fawas also knows the area and surf breaks so incredibly well you can get the best surf information and lessons from him and his team, it is 100% the best place to stay in Arugam Bay if you want to surf! 🤙

My girlfriend and I are staying here at Safa Surf Camp in Arugambay for two weeks and enjoy surf and yoga lessons. We learn everything about surfing out in the sea, in theory classes or as video feedback. Fawas and his team are giving their best to meet and top our expectations. Eventhough the country is struck by an economic crisis, the Safa crew as well as the other locals here are as friendly as they could be and make you feel so welcome. We are having a great time and a holiday we will never forget.

Loved my time at Safa! The location is great, with beautiful cabins tucked away at the quieter end of the beach while still being close to everything. The communal breakfasts and dinners were delicious and created a nice social vibe. My surfing improved considerably over just a few days, thanks to lots of support and tips from Fawas and Rahim. Everyone was so lovely - a super welcoming, friendly place to be. Thank you! I hope to return one day!

Unique and incredible experience, difficult to explain in a few words, both in Surfhouse and during the surf courses, the instructors are patient, they encourage you and give you the right charge to do better and better, they were not just "simple surf lessons" but a real experience of life.
The house is very nice, clean and cozy with room for everyone, there is a positive energy and you breathe family air, the location is convenient for everything.
Fawas and the other guys are super nice and present, ready to help you with any difficulties.
Grazie ragazzi! 🏄🏼♂️🇮🇹

Booked Safa Surf camp to get a good introduction to surfing as I was a beginner. They really take the time to teach you the right technique so you can improve your skills (which is hard to find competent teachers in Arugam Bay). The hotel is situated just on the beach in cute beach cabanas. The schedule is rightfully designed to maximise surf and yoga classes but you can always do at your own pace. Breakfast and dinners are delicious local food and reasonable prices. I highly recommend booking Safa if your looking for an authentic surf camp to improve your surf skills and meet some really amazing local and international people.

quiet place right on the beach! arrived there just in the beginning of the season = end of april. it was noticeable that after a very long break due to covid not everything was perfect. they work on it! spectacular daily surfaris (we met peacocks, kingfisher, bee-eaters, thousands birds, sometimes the elephant plus monkeys and many more on the way) early in the morning was just the best start to hop into the ocean. its warmth embraced me and got me ready to start to surf. great for beginners :) i met wonderful people at the camp and had a truly great time. thank you very much for everything :)

I just stayed with my boyfriend for 2 weeks at safa surfcamp in Arugam Bay. We had the best time with Favas and his team either in the water or at gatherings in the camp. The camp is situated just in front of the beach which allows you a swim into the sea at anytine you wish.
I learnt more about surfing as expected and improved my surfing skills a lot. I appreciated the way they taught us with their friendly and open nature. We felt absolutely welcome and will for sure come back as soon as possible.

It was an amazing experience through and through. I made great progress at surfing going from a Softboard to shorter Hardboard within the time I spent there and learned to catch my own green waves. Time at the camp was so much fun and everyone was really nice. Big recommendation for Arugam Bay :)

Arugambay is one of the finest beaches known for surfing. These photos were taken off season. During off season fishing is done so the coast and the beach is a bit crowded but if you visit there early morning (before 8) you can enjoy . They allow seabathing only till 6pm and there are certain areas which the life guards don’t want you to be at , so be careful!
