Kaminoko Pond is a picturesque spot located just a short distance from the free car park. The drive to the pond offers scenic views of water sources, although the road has some small holes that require careful driving. Despite encountering a light drizzle during the visit, the turquoise blue water of the pond remained visible. Visitors are encouraged to read the signboard, which shares a special story about how the pond got its name. Additionally, there is a promenade around the pond for easy walking.

From the main road to the Kaminoko pond parking space (free) is a gravel road. There were some small holes here and there on the way and the road was very narrow so, if you are driving there, definitely drive slow and be careful for the oncoming cars.
The parking space was spacious but the parking space was also sand and gravel so get ready to get your car dirty!
At the parking lot, there was a port-a-potty kind of toilet (not clean) but no toilet paper.
When we went there in mid July, there were lots of horse flies attacking our car so we recommend taking some bug sprays with you if are visiting in the summertime.
There was no phone service there so if you are using your phone for the navigation, you need to do that before you drive up the mountain.
The trail and the Kaminoko pond was very beautiful and magical! The pond was so blue and learning how the pond was formed was really cool! Loved it!

After about 1km on the unpaved forest road, you will reach the parking lot.
If the car is lowered, it may be difficult to go a little further, so please be careful.
There is an atmosphere where brown bears are likely to appear because it is in the forest
The parking lot is very close to the pond.
The pond is smaller than I thought
There is a promenade that you can go around the pond, so I think it's easy to walk.
Do not touch the pond water
I was impressed with the beautiful blue color of the pond.
There is Lake Mashu in this area, but there are no other sightseeing spots, and the road to here is not easy, so please be safe when you go.
It's hard to get there, but I think it's worth it

The Kaminoko pond is a short distance from the carpark (free). The drive towards the pond was scenic as you can trace the water sources. Do take note there are small holes in the road leading towards the pond (perhaps it is a measure to keep speed in check), so do drive carefully. We met with a slight drizzle when we visit the pond. The turquoise blue of the water was still visible. Take a read at the signboard as it has a special story of how the pond got it's name. Beautiful nice place. Great for a stop over.

A pond where groundwater from Lake Mashu gushes out.
It is called the ``Child of God'' pond because it is said to be formed from the underground water of Lake Mashu (Kamuito = Lake of the Gods).
Lake Mashu differs greatly from other lakes in that there are no rivers that flow into or out of the lake.
However, the reason why the water level does not change even when a large amount of snowmelt water flows into Lake Mashu is because underground water from Kaminoko Pond and other springs gushes out around the lake.
12,000 tons of underground water gushes out from Kaminoko Pond every day, and the water temperature is as low as 8 degrees Celsius throughout the year, allowing fallen trees to sink like fossils without rotting in the blue water.
A fish with vermilion spots is swimming.
You can enjoy the blue color as shown in the photo.
I would like you to visit it together with Lake Mashu.

Lake Mashu is a stunning freshwater lake located in Japan, known for its crystal-clear waters. The lake fills the crater of an active volcano and is considered to be one of the most beautiful lakes in Japan. It was once recognized for holding the world record for water clarity. The Ainu called the island in the middle, Isle of Gods.
Recommend observation deck 3.
Somehow google recommends deck 1 as the best but for me deck 3 was def better. Video 1 is of deck 3 and you get a beautiful angle of the lake. Didn’t bother taking videos for deck 1 except for the fox that was roaming around 🤣
Recommend trying the Blue ice cream (ramune flavoured) as well as the Yubari melon (1 for 600 yen)

This is a very beautiful lake and makes for incredible hiking. We visited recently and added a day hike around this lake to the short hike past Mt Io. Getting to the lake is a little tricky if you are staying in Kawayu Onsen. There is a bus which operates on a limited schedule from Mashu town but leaves late and returns early leaving very little time for anything more than visiting the observation deck. Definitely not for a long day hike. We didn’t have a car so ended up hitch hiking to and from the lake. Fortunately Japanese people are extremely nice and we easily got rides to and from Kawayu Onsen.
We did the hike around the south portion of the lake to the Mt Kamui lookout point. An amazing hike with zero visibility on the way out but the clouds lifted for the return and we finally got to see how beautiful the lake is. Afterwards, we got to go back to our ryokan and relax away our pain. If you want any specific info on this hike, feel free to reach out to us. You can find our exact route by searching for Career Break Adventures and Lake Mashu, Japanese Hike or something similar. Good luck and enjoy!

10 stars if I could, the first time here it was very foggy and mysterious. It actually has a reputation for being a mysterious place and I can see why. Fog lasted for most of the day and we were there very early. This second trip was absolutely breathtaking!! Not a single cloud in the sky, on the 1300ft drive up we saw plenty of deer and quite a few red foxes ( not the actor lol ). It is what they refer to a caldera lake and is pure in every sense of the word. It is the second clearest/ purest lake on earth behind Lake Baikal in Russia. There are 3 observatories in all 2 of them are on the west side, observatory 1 which is the eldest of the 3 sits 692ft above Lake Mashu and has washrooms and souvenir shops and restaurants the parking here is not free while at observation point 3 sitting at 2198ft has free parking and in my opinion a much more ooooh and awe view. There isn't any amenities like washrooms here though. Observation point 2 is on the east and is another amazing view. You simply have to come and see it in person, the blue water has to be seen. I've never ever seen a color so mystifying and magical. You can also see Lake Kussharo and see Mt Lo. You can't go down near the water hence the purity of the water. The are other places within Aklan National Park like Lake Kuttara, the water is almost as pure but you can go down to the water and ride paddleboats. Add another tick on your bucket list folks...enjoy

Okhotsk Ryūhyō Museum is a unique science museum that offers an impressive display of films and exhibits based on drift ice, as well as fish tanks, a cafe, and rooftop views of the Sea of Okhotsk. Visitors can explore the diverse marine life found in this region of the world, including organisms that inhabit the Okhotsk Sea. Haha honestly to say, in fact this museum looks huge but it's only basement has 3 things to explore, the movie that shows the drift ice for 8 mins, then some explanation for sea creatures plus self experience touching the drift ice and towel spinning at -15 degrees, since the entrance fee is not expensive, Why not stop by for little fun experience, I recommend you to take a 10% discount coupon at hotel or tourist center.

A great museum to learn about the wildlife and drift ice of the area. Many displays have English, including the professionally-produced video. There is a drift ice experience room, where they keep the temperature well below freezing and give you a damp towel which you can swing around and see what funny shape it freezes in. The small aquarium also functions as a 3D video screen that the staff can operate (you can ask them to show you if it's not busy); you can see a diver's science excursion in the sea. The free observation deck upstairs has a nice view, and the ice cream from the cafe is a light salt-caramel flavor.

For those interested in the sea angel (clione) and learning about drift ice, this museum is worth a visit. Although it's not a large museum, the exhibits are informative and engaging.
The museum offers a theatre that shows a documentary about drift ice with subtitles in different languages, including English. You can also explore several small aquariums featuring sea creatures from the Okhotsk Sea and visit an ice room where you can swing a towel and witness it freeze, which is a unique and enjoyable experience.
The observatory deck can be accessed without purchasing a ticket and you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the Okhotsk Sea, with drift ice stretching out for several kilometers. The majestic Shiretoko mountain range serves as a dramatic backdrop, completing the breathtaking scenery.
If you're a fan of salted caramel flavor, you'll love the ice cream sold on the first floor - it's absolutely delicious!
Overall, I recommend this museum to anyone who wants to learn more about drift ice and see some incredible sea creatures, particularly the cute and charming sea angel.

The Abashiri Prison Museum, a former penal institution, showcases life-size dioramas depicting prison life from the Meiji era. The museum is an impressive and solemn reminder of Hokkaido's history, providing insight into the gravity of what occurred there. However, it lacks adequate English translations. Despite this drawback, it remains a popular destination for families on rainy days as narrations are available in English and Japanese.

Very interesting place to visit. If you are in the area, you should definitely stop by (though you probably already on your way).
It is well made, and show the brutal history of this place. You should dedication some time here if you decide to stop by.
Eirik Heen — Google review
The Abashiri Prison Museum is truly a rare gem in the world of museums. Before my visit, I hesitated, questioning whether I should explore a place with a history tied to human rights concerns. However, upon stepping inside, my perspective underwent a profound transformation. The museum provided a profound education on the history of Hokkaido's development and the darker aspects of its past, where prisoners were inhumanely exploited for progress.
As I delved deeper into the museum's exhibits, I was confronted with the harsh realities of prison life and the toll it took on those incarcerated within its walls. Through artifacts, photographs, and poignant displays, I gained insight into the struggles faced by prisoners and the role they unwittingly played in shaping Hokkaido's landscape.
One of the museum's most compelling features was its ability to provoke introspection and foster dialogue about issues of justice and human dignity. By confronting the uncomfortable truths of the past, the museum challenges visitors to reflect on the ethical implications of progress at any cost.
Despite my initial reservations, I left the Abashiri Prison Museum with a newfound appreciation for its educational value and the importance of confronting difficult histories. It is a place where visitors can bear witness to the injustices of the past and pledge to create a more equitable future.
If you're intrigued by the complexities of Hokkaido's history and the resilience of the human spirit, I urge you to set aside any hesitations and experience the Abashiri Prison Museum for yourself. It's a journey that promises to challenge your preconceptions and inspire meaningful reflection.

Must visit, must see. The main purpose of coming to Abashiri. Please read the history below.
History:
In April 1890, the Meiji government sent over a thousand political prisoners to the isolated Abashiri village and forced them to build roads linking it to the more populous south. Initial conditions were extremely harsh, with insufficient food and rest, and over 200 prisoners died of malnutrition, accidents and as punishment for attempting to escape. Abashiri Prison later became known for being a self-sufficient farming prison, and was cited as a model for others throughout Japan.
Most of the prison burned down in a 1909 fire, but it was reconstructed in 1912. Previously known as Abashiri Kangoku (網走監獄), it took on its current name in 1922. In 1984, the prison moved to a modern reinforced concrete complex.
In 1983, older parts of the prison were relocated to the base of Mount Tento and operate as a museum called the Abashiri Prison Museum (博物館網走監獄). It is the only prison museum in the country. As of 2016, eight of the buildings preserved at the museum are designated Important Cultural Property by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, while three are registered Tangible Cultural Property.

Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park is a stunning destination in Hokkaido during the spring and summer seasons. The park boasts blooming pink moss phlox slopes, go-kart paths, a fishing pond, bungalows and many photo spots. Admission fee of 500 yen includes free parking while there is also a bus tour available at an extra cost. Walking is recommended to explore the park's beautiful scenery including stairs and mulch trails.
Went here during May23, peak blossom. It does look like moss from far and like a carpet too. There are plenty of photo spots and some eateries selling ice creams and fast foods.
If you have problems walking, there is a mini bus service going around the park. The driver will drive very slowly so you can take pictures with ease and enjoy the view.
We didn't have enough time to explore every inch of the park because of tight schedule. Maybe next time.
Highly recommend if northern Hokkaido is part of your plan. From Sapporo will take about 4-6h. So it won't be a day trip.

If you are here in Hokkaido during mid-May, you must visit this Park as a bucket list to do. At this time the pink moss flowers are in full bloom like heavenly flowers on earth. Shibazakura, also known as moss phlox, is the representative flower of Spring in Hokkaido. Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park is one of the most well-known places for shibazakura in the whole prefecture! The ten-hectare park is painted with the most glorious pink and white colors from early May to early June. At the top of the hill is an observatory from which to take stunning photographs of the picturesque landscape. The photogenic pink torii shrine gate is also a popular spot to take pictures. Lake Akan is a freshwater body located within the confines of an active volcano, showcasing dense forests and hot springs. The crater lake offers picturesque views, with opportunities to walk along the hot spring street and indulge in activities such as fishing and ice sports during winter. The area around Mount Io boasts stunning scenery but has a distinct smell of sulfur similar to Rotarua in New Zealand. One can also explore the Bokke mud pools by taking the walking trails through the forest.
A pretty lake where you can enjoy the lake view and walking along the hot spring street. Of course, the hot spring is totally worth it! In summer time, the sightseeing boat is available, and in winter time you may want to do fishing and ice activities.

Went in winter while the the whole lake was frozen in early February. Such a great time on the snowmobiles at iceland and fireworks display at night. Ainu no kotan had some really nice reastaurants and handcrafted souvenirs.

We were here in June and the weather was perfect. Not seeing a lot of tourist this time around. We also took the cruise which took approximately an hour and you get to see the famous moss ball. A short trail near the lakeshore took you into the woods and a number of geothermal spots. Relax and enjoyable.

Lake Akan was a really buzzing place with a lot of snowmobiles circling around (looked like locals were competing in some sort of race). It’s pretty interesting place but you’ll have to walk around 5min to get to this sign, worth! Can’t wait to be back in summer where the sign is probably in the middle of the melted lake?

The Kitami Mint Memorial Museum offers a deep dive into the history of mint farming in Kitami, showcasing its role as a global mint producer in the early 20th century. Visitors can explore the museum's thorough explanations of mint history and its impact on shaping the town. The friendly staff and extensive range of mint-related goods at the gift shop add to the charm of this place.
A cute little museum that gives you a very thorough explanation of the history of mint and how it built the town of Kitami.
The staff were super, super friendly and they deserve all the love they can get.
The gift shop has tons of mint and mint-related goods, so be sure to check it out before you leave. Can't recommend this place enough.

A quaint little building that has been carefully conserved. The gentleman manning the place spoke a little English and took the time to show us around which was really helpful as the media depicting its history were all in Japanese. Could tell he loved his job which made our visit all the more memorable. The lady manning the shop next door was wonderfully warm and friendly despite it being closing time when we entered. She too spoke a little English.

Akan International Crane Center is an educational facility dedicated to the Japanese Crane. Visitors can observe several cranes in captivity and learn about their behavior and life cycle. The center features spacious pens for the cranes to roam around, and friendly staff who provide information in English. Additionally, visitors can take advantage of a special pass for reduced prices at other crane centers and observation areas. While some visitors may have seen only a few cranes during their visit, the exhibition offers informative displays about these majestic birds.
Beautiful place but kushiro is really far away, almost the far east end of Japan.
Came here to see the cranes in Dec, unfortunately just got to know the peak season is Jan/Feb.
And there is no more afternoon feeding time.
Anyway there were 4 cranes in the cage, at least I can view the national bird of Japan, if not mistaken.
The information counter clerk was very friendly and helpful.
Recommended but be prepared for freezing cold in jan/feb..

Akan International Crane Center. We came Oct 30, 2021. There’s nothing to see in here. Similar to Kushiro Marsh Observatory, I recommend these places to be skipped. The only good thing about these places are the exercise/play area in here and the hiking trail in Kushiro Marsh.
I recommend going to Kushiro City Red-crowned Crane Natural Park 釧路市丹頂鶴自然公園 instead. Lots of cranes and better photos in autumn.
Lots of tanchos in the wild too, if you are driving you’ll see them in the fields in groups.
Haavan Havina — Google review
I visited the center in early May 2019. I saw only 3 cranes. It may not be the right time to visit. The exhibition was good and informative. There are brief English translation, but more detailed description could be better. The entrance fee is charged at a small rate. There is a kid area where they can read, play games and draw. Overall, it is a good place for a family to visit.
Apipong Lamsam — Google review
An interpretive centre for the Japanese Crane, there are several in captivity so even if you cannot see them in the wild, at least a few are here to see what they are like. The pens are large enough to at least roam around. The interpretive centre has a lot of information about the cranes including its life cycle. Very friendly staff who can speak some English. Take advantage of a unique pass where you can visit different crane centers and observation areas for a reduced price.

Lake Onnetō is a charming body of water situated in Akan Mashu National Park, providing stunning vistas of Mount Meakan and Mt. Akan-Fuji. The lake is surrounded by lush forests with big trees growing close to its shores, making it an ideal spot for hiking along the Eastern trail. The Western shore offers the best views of Mount-Akan and Fuji from a wooden platform specially built for that purpose, particularly during sunset when the light is optimal.
Onnetô-ko is a must see. The pretty lake is nestled within a verdant forest, with big trees often close to the shore. Hiking along the pleasant trail on the Eastern side allows you to fully enjoy the peaceful and lush environment. Best views on Mount Me-Akan and Fuji are from the Western shore, especially at the convenient wooden platform built for that purpose. Light is especially favorable at sunset.

The Northern Daichi Aquarium is a small yet high-quality freshwater fish exhibit situated in the Onneyu Onsen area. Featuring simulated habitats, including a waterfall and frozen river, this aquarium offers an immersive experience for visitors. The tanks are well-maintained with flowing water to simulate the natural habitat of various fish species. Additionally, there is a small touching zone where visitors can feel some fish up close.
Love this wonderful aquarium! It's small, but the creatures and tanks are very well taken care of. a place with a large garden, there is a unique building in front that attracts attention but at first I thought it was the main building. but the main building is on the side with a small bridge made of wood. tickets cost 760¥ for one adult. There isn't a very large aquarium inside, but the collection of fish is arranged in a charming, clean, orderly aquarium with lighting that creates a relaxed atmosphere. What was surprising was that the exit was directly connected to the souvenir shop. many types of wooden crafts, herbal things and snacks. more things can be seen in this shop actually hahaha which I think is really funny. but don't regret going here.

The Taushubetsu River Bridge is an old rail bridge that lies submerged in the lake for most of the year due to the construction of the Nukabira Dam. However, during winters, when the lake's water level drops, it reappears and presents a mysterious object on the lake. The bridge has a rich history and offers beautiful scenery around its disused concrete structure. Sadly, it is falling apart now, and part of it may collapse in a few years.
Walk on the lake to there !

at all, very lucky day I guess. All the lake's serface was iced so I could walk on it. 30-40min to Taushubetsu bridge by walk, which is a mysterious object on the lake. In the winter, because of lake's short water, the bridge seams to be emarged on the lake only in the winter.

Concrete arch bridge on the former National Railways Shihoro Line
1st Hokkaido Heritage, Quasi-Railway Monument
When the bridge is reflected in Lake Nukabira on a clear, windless day, it looks like a pair of glasses.
Also, because it is an arch bridge, it has another name, ``Glasses Bridge,'' and its appearance, reminiscent of the ruins of an ancient Roman aqueduct, is said to harmonize with the surrounding scenery.
It was originally a bridge built over the Taushubetsu River, a tributary of the Otofuke River, when the Japanese National Railway Shihoro Line (discontinued in 1987) opened to Tokachi-Mimata Station in 1939.
In 1955, the Nukabira Dam, an artificial dam lake for hydroelectric power generation, was built, and the area around the bridge sank into the lake, so the Shihoro Line was replaced with a new line built to avoid the lake.
Although the railroad tracks on the bridge were removed at that time, the bridge itself was left in the lake, where it remains to this day.
Lake Nukabira is an artificial lake, and the water level changes dramatically depending on the season and power generation, so there are times when the entire bridge is submerged, and other times when the water level is so low that you can see the entire bridge.
Because of its appearance, it is also called the ``phantom bridge.''
Since being submerged in the dam, it has been left to its own devices and could collapse at any time.
It looks beautiful no matter what season you visit, so if you have the chance, you should definitely go.

Unfortunately, we went there on a cloudy/rainy day and couldn't see the stars at night. But it is known to be one of the best places in Hokkaido for the star watching.
We had a lunch at the restaurant called Lake View in the Fusui (風水) Hotel. Food was good, and it also offered a stunning view of the lake. Visited the lake during the winter festival, it was really an unforgettable experience, especially the onsen in the middle of the lake. For those who are visiting without a car, a free bus is available from Obihiro.
Obihiro Racecourse, located just a short drive away from the city's urban district, is home to the unique Banei Horse Racing, which is exclusive to Japan. The race track offers a variety of food options including local specialties like curry ramen and buta-don. Additionally, there is a mini area for kids to pet and feed the horses. Races are held on Saturdays and Sundays in the afternoon with new races starting every 30 minutes.
It was an amazing experience and something that’s only done in Obihiro! Banei horse racing apparently is only held here in Japan and nowhere else in the world.
The race track also offers a great selection of foods to enjoy while watching the horses like your typical foods: okonomiyaki, ramen but also some local specialties like curry ramen and buta-don.
For kids, the track also has a mini area where you can pet and feed the horses. Even if you dont know anything about horse racing, it was still an enjoyable time for me here.

**American Family Visiting**
This was an interesting visit. While it's a little bit of a trip to get from Sapporo to Obihiro Racecourse, it's likely worth the visit if you want to experience a type of weighted sled racing that can't be found anywhere else. The grounds consist of main building where gambling and seating is found along with a couple of small shops and restaurants both in and on the grounds.
You can either take a taxi to get here (which we did to get there) from the station, or if it's a nice day, the walk is not too bad (but still a walk!).
There is also a small petting area where small farm animals and even the huge horses are out and you can feed them (these horses are HUGE though).
The racing itself was interesting and while I understand this is traditional and that the animals aren't abused, it's tough to watch when whips are used, so if that bothers you, you may not want to go. The horses appear well cared for, the staff was friendly, and it was a lively crowd. You really have to get down at the race course level and walk/run along with them as the race goes.
Matthew Sharpe — Google review
Fun and interesting experience, everything was really well organised. The races are only on Saturday and Sundays starting at the afternoon, every 30 minutes there is a new race. We liked looking at the preparation for the race as well as the race itself which is very short. My husband even guessed the winning horse, unfortunately for non Japanese speakers it’s impossible to understand the gambling machines so we couldn’t do that.
atar lang — Google review
Honestly, exactly what I was expecting. My daughter and I read Silver Spoon and decided to check this place out years ago. It has what you would expect of horse racing, tradition over some more modern practices perhaps. I don't think any animals are straight up abused though and the racing was amazing to see up close. Took about 2 hours of our day, but is a real hike from Sapporo!

Shirahige Waterfall is a stunning sight, with its cobalt blue Biei River cascading down the mountain. It's an important spot for tourists to see during their trip to Japan, and is located in a beautiful park. Please be careful not to enter agricultural fields when taking your photos, as they are private property.
白髭の滝,in winter.
The most gorgeous view in Hokkaido in winter, not easy to travel, suggest car rent or join day tour.
Zyrix Law — Google review
Beautiful waterfall with the same beautiful blue water as the Blue Pond down the road. You view the waterfall from a very high bridge and while the waterfall itself is lovely, I thought the surrounding view of the mountains and forests was even more beautiful. Worth stopping by for the views if you're in the area! Parking area was a little unclear.
Rachel Boatwright — Google review
The waterfalls is a nice scenic item to tick off the list. There not much to do there other than walk along the bridge to see the waterfalls really.
You could go to one of the onsens I guess but the main attraction there is the waterfall.
The river running below the bridge shows the cloudy blue water which is iconic to the area.
Dan H — Google review
Good place to stop by if you are here for the blue pond, etc. 30 mins walk from the blue pond - or less than 5 mins drive by car.
The waterfall was lovely - not too big but strong enough and yet delicate. It also offered a nice view with snowy mountain at the back.
You cannot get close to the waterfall - you can see it from the bridge. Pretty empty in end of April, 2021 (though it was weekend). Wish I could see it from different angle too (not only from above but from the riverside, etc.).

This waterfall is a must-visit during the winter season. The frozen ice and snow covering the waterfall, coupled with its stunning never-frozen blue water, is a sight to behold. The clear sky and the beautiful Daisetsuzan mountain range in the backdrop add to the charm of the place. Although the area was initially quite crowded with several tour buses, we were fortunate enough to have the entire place to ourselves once they left.
Leh Ping — Google review
These waterfalls are rather special as they came out from the cliffs. They made a spectacular sight when you watched them from the iron bridge. Everthough it's already spring, this place was so cold that there were still snow cover found everywhere. Making the place rather picturesque. Furthermore, the setting sun added more colours to the whole place .....it's mesmerising!
c ph (Pink Gardenia) — Google review
This is a nicer alternative no matter the weather. The bridge gives unprecedented access to the falls and it's a soaring beauty. Better yet get a day pass for the onsen right behind it. It's relaxing in the summer rain and perfect for a pass over
Clarence Yeung — Google review
It is not a big waterfall but the scenery is amazing as there were mountain views as well. easy to find a parking lot and if you are feeling fit you can consider climbing up the volalcano evacuation centre, 286 steps to the top. the mountain view there is even greater!

I went during winter n it's quite cold.. need to really wear appropriate clothing when heading over. It's nice seeing everything cover in snow, so magical. Won't wanna say whether it's recommended because it's up to individual.

Absolutely breathtaking.
I visited this in December Winter so it was extremely cold.
I was able to capture quite a few pictures and there was a few tourists. Best shots are on the bridge heading towards Mt.Tokachi.
Parking is available and free. Just a 5 min walk to see this.
I would recommend this place to visit! 5/5

The parking area very near, easy to access. It’s very windy, full protection recommend when you go on the bridge. The air very cold, and refreshing. The view is stunning.

Gorgeous waterfall with a truss bridge against the snowy mountain backdrop. It is an easy walk from the car park. If you have time, check out the stairs and walk up to the Sabo facility. Fun little work out and very interesting information centre

Very blue water and quite nice to view it from the bridge. There is a gallery with very good illustration of the preventive measures of volcanic activities at the top of the hill if you do not mind to 286 step to reach it.

a waterfall with funny name, white beard waterfall. the name was given the shape of water falling down is like grand father white beard. the water is a hot spring water and it changes color after meeting mineral from rock in a water. it's beautiful color and loved to see it.

Breathtaking, majestic, serene view. How can you not visit this place if you came to Hokkaido!
Will come again next year to slowly enjoy the view as too rushing following tour trip this round!!!!

Arrived at 6:00 in the morning. There were no people yet and can park the car at the roadside near the bridge.
The waterfall is worth a visit, if spending a night at Onsen hotels around the spot.

I haven't discovered much of Hokkaido yet, so was excited when I found this place. It's beautiful, with convenient parking across the street. Not too crowded on a weekday either. It was also rainy the day we went though. The bridge is sturdy but it is built upwards, so may feel weird to some while walking across it. There is also a 286 step staircase close by but it doesn't lead to a nicer view, just a parking lot. It was a nice exercise though! Overall, worth the quick stop to see a beautiful waterfall and river.
Vinny F — Google review
The White Beard Waterfall in winter is indeed beautiful. The color of the stream is beautiful, and the small houses nearby have thick cream hats on their heads.

Spectacular! One waterfall with so much going on. Don't forget to take in the view on the other side of the waterfall!

Lots of tourists
Can view the frozen water from the bridge
Beautiful view
Ng Gilbert — Google review
The parking area is foc but it was crowded with other tour buses and tour groups when we visited. There is a short walk after crossing the road down the car/bus park where you will arrive at a metal bridge suspended over the river below. On one side if you look downwards, you will be able to see the majestic waterfall just below with blue water cascading down to join the river as it flows underneath the bridge that you are standing on. Far away in the distance you will be able to see multiple mountains/peaks and even spot one that is smoking continuously! When we visited in 2nd week of oct in mid afternoon, the whole place was teeming with flying lady birds of all colors and sizes. Sadly, due to the sheer number of visitors, many lady birds ended squashed on the bridge. There is a toilet facilities next to the carpark but understandably as this place is heavily visited by tourists, there was a long line of people queueing to use the toilets.

The Blue Pond is a beautiful man-made pond located in the scenic province of Biei. The pond is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful blue color and peaceful atmosphere. After being chosen as the wallpaper for Apple Inc., the Blue Pond has become one of the top sights in Japan.
Rental car driving and the roads are twisty but enjoyable to drive.
Google maps helped. 👍
If you're on a tour bus or in a tour group, you'll have no problem.
Very beautiful thing to see.
It can get busy, but you'll get your opportunity to get some great pictures in.
Fyi if you're driving. You'll have to pay ¥500 (less than $5) for parking, when you're leaving.
Booth is just before you exit the parking to get back to the road.
db2 able — Google review
amazing, it was real in front of my eyes (not just on the Apple wallpaper) !! there were many different angles looking into the blue pond, many different reflections of the sky too. the kind of blue is very special, not the sky blue, not the deep-sea blue, kind of turquoise blue but it glowed a bit. not sure my pictures captured the ambience.
Ernest T — Google review
A lovely place to take a relaxing stroll along the artificially created blue pond and it's tranquil surroundings. The blue water is an effect of the aluminum that has seeped into the water and reflected from the sunlight.
Recommended for a nice quick visit for some photography opportunities. There is also public toilets available a this area.
Ting Ting — Google review
Not a very huge pond but the water in the pond is stunning. I guess depending on the time of the day and whether it is sunny or cloudy, the water will give a slight greenish hue or stunning turquoise colour.
I would recommend going early in the morning to avoid tourists.
The carpark is 500Yen Which you pay when you exist. There is a toilet.
If you have time, you can drive further up the road (about 4mins) to Shirahige Waterfall.
peter liew — Google review
Simply beautiful even though the pond was frozen. It was amazing to catch a glimpse of this lovely blue pond during different season, the beginning of Spring. Worth the effort to pop by.
Sisilyn — Google review
Nice experience. When you first enter, you will not feel that the water is blue. Move more and you'll start to see more blue water.
Taxis cost 4900¥ to reach there. You can take a rental bicycle from the Biei station. If I remember correctly, the distance b/w station and blue pond is more than 21 kms and it will take more than 1 hour to reach there.
Shubham Gupta — Google review
Although the area is small, it is worth the stop. The pond is beautiful to look at with a scenic view of the dams waterfall. Parking is 500¥ per vehicle though there are a few areas prior you can pull to the side and walk to the parks many walking paths. There's a small shop that is a bit pricey but holds some cute trinkets and yummy snacks.
Relik Starr — Google review
Pretty and very blue lake but a very long drive to get there. I don't think it was worth renting a car and driving 3 hours each way from Sapporo just to see this pond. Definitely drop by if you're in the area but don't make this your destination.
They have a cafe and toilets on site. The parking is paid and they charged 500 yen per car. Just prior to the drive up to the pond there's a great rest stop with vending machines, toilets, a phone and some maps.
Also note in the afternoon at 4pm, there were many insects that would sting. Use insect repellent.
Zeal Sheth — Google review
Super crowded and with just a narrow muddy path that goes both ways, one has to walk with caution despite being mesmerised by the view. And that view makes all that worthwhile.
Would highly recommend to come at least once, preferably not on a rainy day, which I guess would be rewarded with clear waters and photos with nice reflection.
Blue ice cream was surprisingly refreshing and tasty. Didn't taste weird at all!
Jeanie T. — Google review
Went on 17 April in the morning. Part of the pond has melted while path to take photo was semi-muddy and the number of visitors was reasonable. The view of the blue pond was beautiful with the surrounding ice melting

Amazing!! It looks even more magical in person. It's a very quick attraction, you can be in and out within 10-20 minutes, but it's worth the stop.

Very pretty blue pond in Biei, Hokkaido. Parking is 500 yen, but otherwise there's no charge. It can get pretty crowded as the day goes on, so I'd recommend going in the morning if possible. Absolutely recommended if you're in the area, but unless you're looking to take lots of photos it's probably not worth coming out of your way.
If you just want to stroll around and enjoy the sights, 15 minutes is probably plenty. I spent an hour here comfortably taking lots of photos from different angles and with different camera lenses. The weather was beautiful and the pond looked lovely in front of the turning colors (early October). Shop nearby has some cute, if a little pricey, themed goods.
Rachel Boatwright — Google review
I found this place 'magical' , as the colour of the pond changed from greyish to stunning blue. The presence of the withered Japanese larch trees in the waters added to its mystical surroundings. Looking great for photography! As I read, the colour of the pond looks different at different times of the day. [ Wheelchair accessible ]
c ph (Pink Gardenia) — Google review
Quick pond to visit. Not much to see here, other than a quick walk along the pond, finding a hole to take a photo in between all the other visitors. I think the exit queue from the parking lot took longer than our walk along the pond.

Beautiful pond with an amazing blue water color hue. There are some trails to explore nature surrounding the pond.
There's a public restroom and big parking lot in the vicinity.
Ilan Kader — Google review
Thought we couldn’t see much of the blueness because it was cloudy with heavy rain (We thought the blue was actually reflection from the sky).
Hence we were pleasantly surprised to see the pond pretty blue! Very nice view. Wonder if tourists can swim inside JKJK
Parking available at 500 yen with many parking slots.
Liau Yuan Wei — Google review
The pond is very pretty but really off from everything. I wish there was more to do and more regular busses. I recommend going by car unless you are also fine with walking for about 45 minutes, then you can also reach the waterfall and Onsen

We come here in late March and pond was frozen. Amazing moment is another experience from pictures in internet ^^. At the end of walk way, small river still flows. Nice scene.

There are two different view and atmosphere when you visit in the daytime and at night. I prefer night time as the view on blue pond was so spectacular. We came at 6pm during end autumn where the night fall after 4.30pm. Have a totally different view and we love it. The ice-cream shop close around 6pm and luckily we got the last order. 😀

It was a cool pond to see, and the color of the water (brightness of the blue) is dependent on the weather more then anything. Not much else in the area, and a 500¥ parking cost. Souvenir shop was there with some unique gifts. I would revisit to see it in winter, but nothing more.
Vinny F — Google review
It was beautiful but a bit dry. Not surr if there was a part were there’s more water and if you can go closer.
Charley Mendoza — Google review
A bit frozen over around the middle of April.
Parking is ¥500 in 2024.
Would recommend holding off visiting until it’s a bit warmer.
Dan H — Google review
Very picturesque pond. The blue colour is the result of minerals present in the water interacting with sunlight.
The pond is surprisingly close to the parking lot. Go up to the left (past the ice cream stand) to reach the best photo spot immediately. Going up the walkway to the right is not worth the effort as the path is narrow and muddy and the view isn't very nice.
Mathew Yee — Google review
We drive up there to combine it with the Ningle Terra’s ( 48 mins from the pond ) . Worth the 500 yen parking to take some nice, pictures. When i was there it was freezing -12 degrees. I can imagine the pond looks nicer during the spring/summer period.

Hoshino Resorts Tomamu The Tower is an upscale lodging with elegant rooms and free breakfast. The resort offers ski rentals, a golf course, and a variety of amenities and restaurants. The location provides beautiful views and a serene ambience, making it feel like a paradise in the middle of nowhere. However, some guests found the rooms to be somewhat outdated. The staff is praised for their professionalism and friendliness.
My family and I had a great time at the hoshino resort. The staff are all incredibly friendly and helpful. My only complaint is that the lounge closes early and so if you wish to read or work or relax outside of your room in an evening, it’s not really possible. Otherwise it was a lovely stay and we would definitely visit again.

We stayed for one night. The rooms are clean and well maintained. Staff are kind with professional attitude. We had breakfast buffet included, the food was correct, made with local ingredients. French toast was excellent. There are many stores around the resort, it is a very large area. So you need to use the shuttle bus to move around (every 15min the bus comes). Tomamu is a very chilly area, recommend to bring some warm clothes if you planning to walk around at night.

Absolutely beautiful location and ambience. It felt like the place was located in the middle of nowhere but at the same time it felt like you were living in your own paradise. The amenities and restaurants were superb and had everything you need. I would have given a perfect score, but the rooms look and feel outdated and somewhat took away from the charm of the place. Gorgeous views from the room though. The hotel staff was very helpful and friendly too!
nix bautista — Google review
The hotel is quite dated, ski resort not very exciting. Key problem was hygiene. There were lots of bugs. Most disgusting experience was lunch in the ski area. Plenty of live bugs in the restaurant. However even more dead bugs on the floor and nobody bothers to clean it up.
Juergen Pulm — Google review
The room was decent but I'm giving the hotel five stars for the overall easy ski in/out easy access to some of the most amazing trails.
I paid around ¥32500 for one night with breakfast but I booked the same day after my flight got cancelled.
The room comes with access to many restaurants around the hotel premises, including a sightseeing lift ticket and a free passport to the Ice Village and Mina Mina Beach.
They also have ski rental equipment which costs around ¥12000 for the full kit per day and the ski lift ticket was around ¥5000 for 4+ hours.
I lived in Colorado for two years and this was the best snowboarding experience I have ever had.
If you like winter sports you must visit Hokkaido and stay at this resort to experience the magical powder.

We stayed here for our honeymoon.
Although neither of us ski I cannot recommend this highly enough. There are many activities for everyone, some on site, some not but bus service is provided.
The rest area with complimentary champagne is, of course, a huge bonus!
Beautiful views, very clean room, helpful staff, and great buffet style dining areas.
There are a handful of other restaurants, a wine bar and a clothes shop, all of which are very high quality.
People might baulk at the price, but you get what you’re paying for.
I look forward to my next visit!

Love the natural beauty of God's creation in this place. So vast the land, so much greenery and up close to the animals, not forgetting Cloud 9 experience. I rate the room 3 stars as i find the room slightly run down and the walls are so thin. We could hear our talking. We happened to stay sandwich in between 2 families. They love to discuss their daily activities at the corridor muvh to my annoyance. Speak so loudly in cantonese, knocking the door so loudly to wake their members. 😏 The service is very good, staffs are polite and cheerful all the time even at 4.30am.

Got 37 floor but only 3 lifts.
Peak time need to wait for more than 15min…
All the restaurants super far away from tower.
And the link way got no heater.
The buffet is quite disappointing.
The whole design of the resort is very poor and unreasonable.
Not worth that price….

Aside from being a bit old and dated , there’s nothing inherently bad about the Tower (my bathroom had a bit of a smell though) . The staff are immensely friendly , professional and helpful - and they truly run a operation as good as can be when you consider the SHEER VOLUME of people that are staying here. There are truly an astronomical number of mainland Chinese (you know there’s a lot of them when the hotel staff actually prefer to speak to me , a 华人, in mandarin because some are more fluent in it than English ) that there’s a lot of them. You will have to queue for a lot of things and the hotel bears the weight of this 人上人海 quantum of people somewhat poorly at times. Aside from that , the food is very good and there’s a plethora of activities around for winter sports .

- Just came back from the trip 29-30 April. The weather was windy and chilly, it was not good to play outdoor for long. Maybe June-September is better season.
- The terrace where u can see the cloud has not open yet, so do check the schedule of activities that u want to do before booking. All activities have specific duration, and not open for all the year round.
- the tower hotel is closer to farm, outdoor center, hotalu restaurants than the Resonair. The big view from bedroom and living room is fantastic. Although room may be a bit smaller than Resonair but it is cheaper and better location, I think.
- they can let u enter the room early as soon as the room available. We could enter the room at 12:30 actually, great!
- There is a shutter bus to minami beach. U will be given a voucher for breakfast and most of guys chose buffet at nippuri located at Resonair hotel. I didnt not know there is a bus to that restaurant so I had to walk a long way.
- Transportation is very convenient. There is rapid train from Sapporo, shinsapporo, minami chitose to tomamu station. A bus waiting there to take u to the hotel, so no worries.
- to conclude, if u intend to go, u should plan early, go to the website the check the duration of activities first, pick up the days with good weather .
- although we went in april, but i think this is good place for skiing.

I would never come back to this place.
The room isn’t very clean and even has multiple damages. (There’s a sesame on our table. And my baby nearly touches it!! They even say the room is a FAMILY suite.)
Too expensive and never possible to even get a reservation at any restaurant!!
Stay here for three nights.
I was so regret to stay in here!!!!
Hokkaido must have other beautiful places to go with.

Attracted by the Hoshino brand and the chapel on water. Felt overpriced after check out. We booked both twin and treble rooms. the treble rooms had better view. But the rooms are definitely outdated and in desperate need of major refitting. Need to walk 10 min to the restaurant area. We waited 40 min for the Italian dinner. At 8.30pm we escorted our elderly members to the chapel on water in which they climb stairs and outdoor corridor to reach. It was quite tiring for them. The onsen also needs a lift by their buses. it is not a walkable distance. Breakfast at Hal was ok. Overall, everywhere is crowded. After checkout our family went for the farm ride. But really i don't think the rental gasoline golf car is ever needed cos it is perfectly walkable from parking lot even for our 90 yo father. Would not recommend staying at the resort again. Did not find the stay justifiable.

Rooms and design is dated but environment is excellent with plenty of facilities, activities and range of dining choices. For summer time, rafting is a must to try, renting a gold cart at the farm and having picnic on the grassland is also enjoyable.

Bro, this place is a racket. We spent $400 per night for a very dingy room, with holes in the wall. The pictures of the room looked completely different online, and when we showed the front desk the pictures of the room we booked vs the room they gave us, they told us that they didn't have any more of that room type available and that they would not give us a partial refund. For full transparency, we booked through Agoda; but I've booked through travel sites before and never been treated quite like this by the hotel. Separately, I don't know if it's always like this or we just picked a bad time but the clientele here is AWFUL. So much screaming through the hallways, unsupervised teenagers being teenagers, the crowds in the hallways give me claustrophobia it's so crowded.
I've been so impressed with the client service all throughout Japan but not here. This is one of the worst hotel experiences I've had (second only to the time I got bed bugs from a hotel in Kyrgyzstan).
Victoria Clatterbuck — Google review
We're not guests of the hotel and did not stay the night but we wanted to leave a review to commend the staff at the hotel. We came for the Ice Village held at the hotel premises but forgot to check the timing of the last bus beforehand. When the gentleman at concierge realised that it was the last train, he immediately called his colleague to ferry us to the train station. Kudos to the two gentleman, we made it!
The resort also have a number of activities like an indoor pool and a ski area where we saw many people snowboarding and skiing. Will likely come back again for the good service and facilities to snowboard.

Hotel service very nice! The staff will wait for you once you alighted at Tomamu JR station, their shuttle bus will send you directly to the tower. I love my tatami Japanese room! Spacious! There is a lot of free activities there too! 3days is never enough! Will definitely go back again!!
Cha Lim — Google review
An absolutely stunning location with what feels like endless Restaurants and Activites. And that's apart from the picturesque skiing facilities located at Tomamu. The Tower is located right at the end of the main slope, so you can pretty much ski straight into the hotel!
Staff were endlessly helpful and always willing to help or even just say good evening around the resort.
My reasoning for the 4 star review is solely based on the elevators in each tower. There's 3 elevators in each tower - but I've never hated elevators more than when we stayed here. We were there for 5 days and the shortest time we had to wait for the elevator was 5 minutes - longest at peak was at least 20 minutes (and we ended up taking the stairs). Not sure how it's all set up but that part was so bad that it's really affected the experience, sadly.
Otherwise, it was an amazing location and I'd love to return at some point in the future.

Farm Tomita is a large lavender farm located in Furano and is visited by millions of tourists every year. The fields are full of beautiful flowers from mid-May to early October, and the greenhouse has some plants that bloom all year round.
Visited mid-May so the fields weren’t fully filled in, but from what we saw the farm is sure to be beautiful in peak season. Free admission. They have several fields of different flowers to enjoy, an ice cream shop, as well as a souvenir shop filled with a variety of lavender goods. Definitely worth stopping and strolling through the nice flowers!

Reminds me of lavender farms back in England, except far more colourful!
If you are lucky with the weather, it’s absolutely gorgeous to visit. The rows of colourful flowers, combined with the open sky and distant mountains make it a necessary visit if you’re in Hokkaido.
There are a lot of buses bringing tourists in the summer, so be aware it can get busy, but it didn’t feel cramped when I was outside the buildings.
The ice-cream was delicious (I recommend melon and lavender), just make sure you eat it quickly. It melts very fast in the heat. The farm shops are very beautiful and well decorated, and sell all sorts, including dried flowers, perfumes, decorations and food items.
The closest all-year train station is a 20-25 minute walk away, and only 5 minutes by train from Furano. The melon farm next door is also a necessary visit!

Farm Tomita is very famouse for Lavender flowers field! the views of field is seem like paintings !
unfortunately , when we got there, the flowers were starting gone!
but, the flowers field is so huge that we take walk clean and peaceful path!
the air was so so clean and fresh and the path along the low mountain was so peaceful!
oh, the center of farm there are convenient complex shop including souvenirs shop and restaurants and so on!
when we dropped by restaurants for lunch, we were so happy because the shop sells cool drafts beer!! wow!
the tourists don't need to buy the tickets for park! especially tourists whois using own car!
but, to the tourists who is using train, i recommend to buy "packages tickets" including JR tickets & experience old train & tour of Farm Tomita
(when we tour Sapporo, JR Train sells it!)
anyway, we had a good time here!

Beautiful place to enjoy some lavender fields and fresh melon (the best I've ever had)! Lavender is in its peak in June but I went in August and there were still some growing, but also a bunch of other gorgeous flowers. Plus, the melon is the best in August. There were a lot of people there, but everyone got a chance to get their perfect instagram photos, so just take your time and don't rush. It's not a place to rush. Also, I highly recommend taking the scenic train that only runs in the summer! One of the train stops is near this farm.

Admission is free, and you can enjoy the lavender fields and various flowers.
I visited during Golden Week and wasn't expecting to see lavender, but there was lavender blooming inside the house.
You can see the cherry blossoms, and the Tokachidake mountain range and scenery are also great.
I think you can enjoy it without getting crowded even outside of the lavender blooming season.

Really touristy with buses after buses dropping off at this place. But this place is made for tourists so it has enough amenities to interest anyone. There's a big variety of shops (from dried flower, lavender to melon products) around the farm and beautiful flowers abound. There's also a lovely photography museum, factory production lines as well as various viewpoints (don't miss out on the viewing spot in the lavender factory).
The entire area is nicely maintained and a well curated space with the path amongst the trees a personal highlight for me.

Was very crowded when I went in the afternoon. On the left of the car park were retail shops mainly focusing on melon and ice cream. That's not part of Farm Tomita.
Farm Tomita is right of the car park. Flowers fields were pretty. There were several F&B and souvenir shops across the farm. So don't join the massive crowd in the first ice cream shop at the entrance, there's plenty more inside without the crowd.

He spread the wonders of Hokkaido's lavender fields throughout the country. The flower gardens at Farm Tomita are simply amazing. It looks beautiful from any angle. In addition, you can see lavender in the greenhouse all year round, regardless of the season. There are some such sad performances. All the food and drinks are very sophisticated and delicious. The customer service is also excellent.

This place has many different plots of flowering plants in all hues and colors and was indeed a warming sight for our tired eyes. We enjoyed ourselves wandering around the different fields, having a great time taking many pics for remembrance. The tractor and motorcycle in this place are all lavender in color! There is a small cafe where we enjoyed the sweet melon (we couldn't enjoy it elsewhere as all the melon farms have already closed up for the remaining months of the year (we visited furano in 2nd week of oct) and also different versions of the lavender ice cream. Multiple shops are located all over the huge estate for you to purchase different types of lavender goods and souvenirs if you wish. Toilet facilities are readily available as well too.

Came during off season so saw very little flowers im bloom
Lavender ice cream was good
Entry was free.
Visit was last week of October

A must visit place in Furano. Visited at the end of June, Lavender is just beginning to bloom. Even at this stage, it's beautiful. Some types of flowers have yet to bloom so if you come in mid July it would be spectacular.
There are many souvenirs related to lavender. There is soap, perfume, dry lavender flowers, essential oil...etc. Tax free is available for foreigners.
Must try the fragrant lavender and melon Ice cream. And also the melon pan and fresh cut melon.
So come early as it gets very crowded as the day progresses.

This place is like magic. So beautiful the Lavender garden. Full of colours. All kind of colours of Lavender. Not a very large garden but good enough to view the famous Hokkaido Lavender.
The surrounding also have lots of stores selling Lavender products and Lavender made food. They also have the famous Hokkaido Melon. Parking is very big and clean. Great place to visit. Will be back

We booked a Klook tour to go here and it was the best decision ever! Even tho it was drizzling that day but we still enjoy ourselves very much.
You do not have to pay to enter, it's free then along the fields there are cafes and shops that sell a wide range of lavender related products.
The scenery is stunning really worth it to make a trip there, we tried the best selling melon bun but it's too sweet for our liking.
Best to rent a car and drive there or go on a tour like us.

Visited Farm Tomita yesterday to see the lavender fields and plants. Pretty nice fields, though be warned many tourists come here with buses so it’s quite crowded.
There’s many shops that sells lavender ice cream, lavender cream puff, mangoes, mango puff. There’s also shops selling lavender perfume and lavender items. Feel free to spend your money there

Unkai Terrace is an alpine observation deck accessible via cable car, offering surreal vistas of mountains and clouds. The view is absolutely stunning, and visitors should check the weather on the website before going to ensure optimal cloud conditions. Wait times for the gondola can be long, so plan accordingly if wanting to see sunrise from the top. Visitors should avoid purchasing macaroons from the cafe as they are overpriced and small in size.
Nice view, not so crowded but can be very windy do mind your belongings!
Teck Wei Chin — Google review
Absolutely worth a visit. Come early to get ahead of crowds, expect long lines of 20-30mins waiting times or more for popular photo spots (e.g. Cloud9) at peak times. Open from 4 to 8 (last gondola up is at 8am, last gondola down is at 9am when it closes). Clouds are there from 6-ish to 7:30-ish before they dissipate and clear up (crowd dies down once clouds clear so quite empty closer to 9). It really depends on the weather. It's free to go up at least once if you're at Hoshino or Club Med (club med is within walking distance to the gondolas, Hoshino needs a bus or you can drive over and park). Soft serve is highly recommended if you have to get something from the pricey menu which is quite limited (limited food options).
Edit: As weather is unpredictable, might take a few morning trips up to Unkai Terrace to be 'above the clouds'. If it's misty at main photo spots, you can try walking up the hike path behind Cloud 9 photo spot to see if you can get above the clouds for a great view.

Well worth a visit, beautiful viewpoint to admire the surrounding countryside.
Nice green ski route is straighter and gentler than the twisting forest route if you don't accidentally choose the intermediate slope on the way down😂

Unkai terrace is the starting point of our <Great Nature Ride> cycling tour in Hokkaido. While it may be very touristy, the natural phenomenon & stunning sea of clouds coming in on a clear day provides an exceptional ecperience for our cyclists on this tour. We will continue to keep this in our cycling itinerary
Shangrila Cycling Tours - SCT — Google review
One of the highlights of our trip to Hokkaido. Should never miss the Unkai. Though during the time when we were there, they said it will only be 30% of clouds, but to our surprise it was really a great view from up there. There was a line going up to the cable car rides, but it was worth it. You can get coffee and some snack too but don't expect too much as the taste is just ordinary. The view is the one that was really breath taking.
Dapple del Mundo — Google review
You can see the sunrise in the morning. Yh3 place is open from 5.30 to 8 am
So plan your travel accordingly..
It really nice to watch..depends upon your luck & climate you can see the view
Renga raj — Google review
We reached 15 minutes before opening time and there was already a queue for the cable car, but we didn't have to wait too long.
There are types of unkai, the one shown in the photos is the Tomamu Unkai, so at least we saw some unkai. If I were to travel back again, I would definitely consider staying a few days at the resorts below to try my luck and hopefully see the Pacific Ocean Unkai which looks much more beautiful.

Much depend on luck if you able to see the cloud. It was really long queue even we arrived 5am at the Gondola. And you need to buy ticket so you will queue longer than the hotel guest. But it quite the services was quite fast.
Personally don't feel worthy to wake up at 4am to catch this 😂

A little over-rated and misleading photos. It is just a ride into the morning mist like going getting in Malaysia. The cable car ride takes more than 10 min and it is quite fun.

We are so lucky able to catch the sea of clouds - 21 July 2023 5.15am. The gondola start operate at 4am, we arrived about 4.15am and wait about 45mins for gondola.
YK Ow — Google review
Absolutely stunning view. Be sure to check the website before you go to make sure the weather is right for the clouds. When we went it was only 30% but was still breathtaking.
Also be prepared to wait a long time to get on the gondola. If you want to see the sunrise from the top you must get there well before the first gondola starts and line up.
Also don't buy the macaroons from the cafe, they are very small and not worth ¥700. The soda and ice cream was nice though.
Ashleigh Dollin — Google review
Talk about a breathtaking experience! One minute the landscape is bathed in sunlight and the next, snowflakes are falling so heavily that you can barely see in front of you. It's a scene straight out of a movie.
And if you're looking for a unique drink experience, the creative drinks downstairs are a must-try. The snow-themed drinks are especially popular with the kids, but don't worry, they have ok quality options for adults too. It would be even better if some snacks were available, though. Just remember to clean up after you've used the area. 😏
If you're not skiing down, the gondola is the only way to get up and down. But the ride is totally worth it - the views from the gondola are breathtaking, and you'll get an unforgettable experience. Enjoy the romantic ride with the love ones. 4 at a time 😜

Ningle Terrace is a shopping area nestled in the woods that boasts picturesque timber cottages and workshops, showcasing and selling traditional handicrafts. While the view is enjoyable, the cost of goods may be considered expensive by some. Access to the location can be limited, with only a few taxis available as transportation options. Entry is free but operating hours are subject to change. The best time to visit would be at night when all of the lights have been lit up.
So dreamy, like those ginger bread houses, Santa’s workshop in books. It looks so nice during the light-up in the evening of winter. However, some shops were already closed at the time (Around 5-6pm).

Around 7pm+
You can access to this place from the hotel.
Walk pass a souvenir zone and get to lower ground from the elevator.
Not so crowded
Definitely a place to take nice photos when it's empty.
Too bad it's working time just until 830pm, so I didn't get to enter most of the shops.
By the time I left, there is no more buses.
The hotel staff helped me to call a taxi.
My suggestion is to visit here earlier,
Probably around 5pm
Chill in some cafe and wait til the closing time to get good photos.

We only had limited time here and I think the view would be better at night when all the lights have been lit up. There are a couple store that sell cute souvenir such a wooden figure. The place is small so a couple hours here should be enough.

A tourist attraction in Furano where local Japanese artists sell their arts and crafts as souvenirs. The shops are in the form of wood cottages and when sunset the lights will be light up to create a more picturesque view. There are also some cafes which sell hot chocolate, milk, cakes, ice creams. If you come in the winter, you will be served a stunning blanket of soft white snow which covers the roads and creates snow hats on the cabins and snow mushrooms on the trees.

Very surprising place in the middle of the forest, next to an hotel. Many cabins (stores) with various crafts and lovely hand-made items.
Worth the trip, especially at night with all the illuminations!

A quaint and beautiful place that feels out of this world. The place looks great in the day and even better in the evening when it transforms through the fairy lights that line the walkways and outline of the huts. Each hut contains a shop filled with hand crafted products which are beautiful and intricate. Worth a visit!

The view was EXCELLENT oh gosh how can this place exist. This is a night place so do go at night for pictures, but note that the place closes at 7:45. Some shops closes before that, and they don’t operate on certain days.
The small cozy wooden huts sells artisanal pieces made by local artisans. They were stunning but prices were on the higher side as expected.

It is good, actually a shopping area but the cost is way too much than the actual.
So just went to enjoy the view, try to visit when it is going to be dark.
But the problem is access you don’t have many buses to get to the location, few Taxies are available.
The entry is free and the operating hours changes depending on the situation

As much as it’s beautiful, there’s nothing much to do here aside from taking nice photos. Do expect huge crowds to be there so you’ll be walking and stopping periodically to wait for people around you to get their photos taken. It's not that great. I have been to many attractions like this before across the world, so maybe I am spoiled a bit. They usually have a really pleasant atmosphere and are crowded. This place was dead, and it just didn't feel as enchanting as how the pictures make it out to be. It closes at 2045, yet half the stores were closed when we got there at 1800. Handmade items mean everything is super overpriced. The village itself is good for some pictures, but other then that, it's not something I would say is worth visiting at all.

Furano Ski Resort is a family-friendly destination in Hokkaido, Japan. It boasts 24 ski runs and opportunities for back-country skiing. Additionally, the resort offers hot springs and English-language activities geared towards children. While the resort can be pricey, visitors can enjoy convenient access to backcountry areas without special equipment. Overall, Furano Ski Resort is an excellent winter getaway for those who love skiing and cold weather.

Take a Lavendar Airport Limousine bus from Asahikawa Bus Terminal to New Prince Furano Resort (2 hours). At the resort they do provide shuttle service to skiing area or might take a 7 minutes walk if you want. They provided skiing equipment for rent (5 hours 8800 yen). Ride the cable car (2300 + 500 refundable deposit) to the top hill to enjoy the beautiful scenery (for those not a skier). There is a restaurant serve quite delicious ramen. Don't forget to drop by Ningle Terrace (4 min) for some beautiful photo as well. Wonderful place worth my visit.

The ski resort areas are lightly crowded on both sides. The terrain and courses are enough for an intermediate to enjoy all day. For advance skiers and snowboarders, look for gated terrains. There are many food options at reasonable prices in the main town area.

It's Spring, the snow is slushy, there's barely anyone here, you could wear a t-shirt and shorts if you wanted. I'd like to have a BBQ later and down a nicely chilled beer while lounging in a deckchair. Also, they play dodgy Japanese music. You love it.

Best powder in Hokkaido, just slightly small unless also taking Kitanomine into account, also has better lunch at 11th floor if you feel like to have one, can get really crowded during peak season, long waiting line at the gondola, try taking the lift at bottom to mid might be faster.
Kevin Wu — Google review
Went in the second Saturday in March. It was really quiet despite the conditions which were really brilliant.
We got a full day ticket and spent a full 5 hours on the resort without going to the same place twice. You can go a little off-piste pretty safely and there are signs about if you want to go all the way off how to do it safely.
There are some good restaurants at the bottom that are pretty cheap. Unfortunately the one at the top of the ropeway has had a fire and is shut down for now.
The only down side was the flat area going from the Furano area to Kitanomine area and the white people who decided to stand in front of the exit from the lifts to have a chat.
Paul Foulkes — Google review
Good ski resort, wide variety of runs available. Very suitable for beginners-intermediate, fewer runs for more advanced skiers and snowboarders. Many wide runs to practice freely. Nice off-piste and backcountry opportunities available.

This is a great ski resort as it is not too busy like Niseko. The signage for the ski runs are very well presented. For beginners like us, we have no issues with the direction of the skin runs. We have been to other ski resorts where we couldn’t even spot which is the green run (beginner) or blue run due to bad signage. The staff here was also very friendly and helpful.
However the only thing we complaint is that the slopes here are little bit uneven so it will be hard for beginners to practice.

It’s the 22th of December and the management doesn’t manage it to open more than two chairlifts. This is the result!
The excuse is not enough snow. Even do we have a snow base of more then a meter… it seems more like they wanna keep the cost low for the operation and squeeze the most money out of it. We will never know but what we know is that it is a fraud on those who want to have a happy day in the snow!!!

The Arte Piazza Bibai museum park showcases 40 sculptures made from white marble and black bronze by Japanese artist Kan Yasuda. The exhibits are situated among rolling hills and natural greenery, adding impact to his geometric and organic style. During winter, the snowed-in environment creates a labyrinth-like experience as visitors discover new paths to explore the stunning sculptures.
Beautiful place to view art and nature, even in the middle of winter.

A great experience in a serene location. This is a slower, more peaceful art experience, not a gallery overflowing with artworks and people.
If you've got a car in Hokkaido and you enjoy sculpture, this is worth a visit.
We visited in autumn and had lovely weather and sunshine. Recent bear activity in the area meant some of the hillside and artworks inside weren't able to be seen, but the experience was enjoyable nonetheless.

Arte Piazza Bibai
The landscape of the remains of a coal-mining town inspired the world-renowned artist. Sculptor, Kan Yasuda, and the outdoor sculpture park where you can enjoy the great outdoors.
Arte Piazza Bibai is an outdoor sculpture park about 60 kilometers northeast of Sapporo, located close to the center of Ishikari plain in Bibai city. “Arte Piazza” is Italian for “Art Square”. In what was once a coal-mining town, an obsolete elementary school building and gymnasium was renovated and left mostly as it was, the 30,000 square-meter area, including the surrounding forest, was redeveloped, and the sculptures from the Bibai-born, world-renowned sculptor Kan Yasuda were placed throughout the building and the surrounding grounds. The park was first opened 1992. Since then, the facilities and works of art continued to increase, becoming the vast 70,000 square-meter outdoor sculpture park it is today. The wooden school building and gymnasium, where numerous art events and hands-on classes are run throughout the year, is also used as a municipal kindergarten. It is a valuable space where you can enjoy the great outdoors and art just by taking a short trip from Sapporo.
Barry Ashworth — Google review
The Arte Piazza Bibai is actually a garden exhibit for Kan Yasuda's sculptures. The Japanese sculptor favours working with white marble and black bronze. His style stretches from geometric shapes to organic curves, all in simple and effortless style. His sculptures are well-placed among the rolling hills and natural greenery, giving more impact to his works.

Yubari Merodo, a rest stop located on a toll road, offers cantaloupes grown by a farming co-op for sale. The best time to consume the melon is in the morning when limited cut melon is available. If sold out, customers can still purchase freshly harvested melons that need at least three days to mature before consumption due to being unmatured. Outside food carts offer ice cream and coffee flavors among other treats.

Also, the stamps for the stamp rally here are orange, which is the color of Yubari melons, which I think is a good idea.

The Historical Village of Hokkaido is an open-air museum that replicates a 19th-century farming village with over 60 traditional wood and stone homes. Spanning a vast area, it was established in 1983 by dismantling and reconstructing or reenacting 52 landmarks. The facility includes notable buildings like the Residence of Temiya Station Master and the Urakawa Subprefectural Government Building.
This is a very large Village with many different historical houses and buildings to explore. The staff are friendly and and whole place is kept neat and tidy. It's very accessible for families with small children however some of the buildings have steps in and out, although ramps are often provided. It takes 2 to 3 hours to enjoy the Village and slightly longer if you intend to eat at the onsite restaurant. This place was incredibly quiet when I visited on a Thursday morning however it is perhaps busier during weekends and holidays.

I came here for the first time around 5 years ago. I'm glad to see that it was more clean and the landscape seemed nicer too. It felt magical the second time around. There was less people(probably because the emergency state was lifted just recently) so we had more time to admire each building and its story at our own pace. there were lots of crows though, too many it was scary to go towards the ponds and other areas where these birds hangout so wouldn't recommend bringing snacks that will require laying your food out in the open(some biscuits or cookies might do) coz they will attack.

entrance is ¥800, Hokkaido museum ¥600 which is nearby maybe less than 1km walk or can take bus too, can get package deal of ¥1200. the museum does not have much unless you really is interested in the Ainu people. the Village is so vast that you must get ready to walk a lot and if its sunny bring all your stuff to protect yourself. bus ride is ¥210

It’s an open museum. More than 50 historical buildings to be explored! Spent 6 hours here just to enter every building and learn about the history! The interior and external architecture are still intact and maintained to reflect the period accurately. Totally worth the visit!

Visited back in 2019 and really enjoyed several hours taking a trip down memory lane. Not only was the village well kept, but the guides were super friendly and more than keen to explain how life worked back then. Certainly worth visiting if you're in Sapporo

Very nice visit ! We walked around the village for more than 1h30 to see everything. We really enjoyed discovering all of these old buildings, we went on a sunny december day, it was really enjoyable. I recommand this visit !

Interesting place. Quite the big area.
You can enter almost all buildings.
I would recommend visiting the museum nearby as well. They offer a combined entry ticket.
Easy to reach by JR and a local bus.

Great place, even 3 hours weren't enough to see everything. We met a couple of volunteers who told us about certain buildings or did an interactive activity. We learned a lot about the history of Hokkaido. 😊

We visited this neat place on a holiday and it was completely free! The old buildings were kept really well and very clean. The most interesting places are the homes that people used to live in. It really feels like you’ve gone back in history more than 100 years ago. The fisherman’s house and warehouse was also very cool to learn about. There’s a cafeteria here too so it was good to get a meal while visiting.

A pretty big village outside of Sapporo. Worth the visit and easily accessible by train and bus. The bus stopps at the Museum as well, where you can see some local animals as well as Ainu stuff.
Suggest to purchase the ticket for 1,200 yen for both locations. You can easily walk the distance between the village and the museum within 15 minutes. The Museum closes at 16:30 and you'll probably need 1-1,5h to see everything. For the village you'll need more if you enter every house.
Be aware that you need to take of your shoes in almost every house. So, don't wear your fancy hiking boots where you need help to get in and out of them.

Its huge, and has a large variety of buildings. I think you can enter all of them. One of my favorites was an old photographers house. The 2nd story roof is genius. We went in snowy season and it was still extremely pleasant despite not everything being accessible. Also there are quite a few species of birds in the area if you have a family member is more into that.

Beautiful place. The historical buildings give you a great idea of how life was back then. It's well explained and fill either charm, even during the winter time, like when we visited. Totally recommended.

Pretty large village with relocated old houses and buildings. Could have been much more interesting if there were interactive activities or maybe since we visited towards the end of the day they were all finished.
Place closes by 5pm and everyone has to leave by then, accordingly last bus from nearest subway is at 3 pm. Its also v short ride from Subway if you take taxi.
There are no eateries inside the complex.

An interesting place to visit if you are into history and specifically Japanese history. I enjoyed my time here, especially as it was winter and everything was covered in snow. Otherwise there are probably more exciting places to visit in the city.
Drifter Travels — Google review
Far away from Sapporo city but it’s definitely worth the trip. Area was a lot bigger than expected and you definitely need a day to explore. I think it’s an underrated place with less tourist, therefore a great place for photo taking. Sunsets and place closes early so it’s best you visit in early morning.

Wow, visiting the Historical Village of Hokkaido on the 25th of February was an adventure straight out of a history book, with a winter twist! 📖❄️ The weather was seriously chilly at -10 degrees Celsius, and the wind had a mind of its own, but that didn't stop me from stepping back in time in this open-air museum.
Dressed in all the layers I could manage, I explored the beautifully preserved buildings that paint a picture of life during the Meiji and Taisho periods of Japan. 🏠 Each structure told its own story, from the quaint farmhouses with their thatched roofs to the old-fashioned post office that looked like it was waiting for a postman from a century ago to walk in any minute. 📬
Walking through the village was like traversing a rustic canvas, complimented by the snow that blanketed everything in a pure, white silence. The cold nipped at my nose, and the wind was a brisk companion, but it added to the authenticity of the experience. Plus, the icicles hanging from the eaves of the buildings were like nature's own crystal decorations! ❄️💎
I stepped inside the old schoolhouse and could almost hear the echo of lessons from long ago. Each classroom was a frozen moment in time, with desks lined up and waiting for students of a bygone era. And then, venturing into the town area with its assortment of historical shops and businesses, I was taken aback by the intricate details that really showcased the craftsmanship of the period. 🏫🛍️
True, the bone-chilling temperatures made me retreat into the warmth whenever I found the chance, especially the charming little tea house serving hot drinks that felt like a warm hug. The steamy cup of traditional tea was the perfect remedy to the frosty weather, and I savored every sip. ☕️
In the end, the Historical Village of Hokkaido was extraordinary. The weather may have been fierce, but so was the beauty and the almost tangible history that surrounded me. It's a must-visit for anyone who loves history and doesn't mind braving a little winter chill for an authentic experience. Just remember to bundle up and you'll have a blast from the past that you won't forget! 🏞️🧣

There is so much to see here you need 4-5 hours if you want to do it all and look inside all the buildings. You have to take your shoes off so make sure you have easy access footwear!
Some of the paths were closed off due to the heavy snowfall but it didn't detract from the experience as you could still see all the buildings.
Teckle Channel — Google review
Great attraction! You can easily spend an entire morning there. It's a very big place. It is very cold in winter and a lot of the places you have to take off your shoes so that makes it less enjoyable (if the places were warmer would be perfect). You can arrive by bus from a metro or train station.

The Historical Village of Hokkaido, or Hokkaido Kaitaku no Mura, is a captivating outdoor museum that vividly brings to life the history of Hokkaido's pioneering era. Stepping into this living museum feels like a journey back in time, as meticulously preserved buildings from the late 19th to early 20th centuries showcase the region's cultural and architectural evolution.
Visitors can explore traditional houses, schools, and workshops, gaining insights into the challenges faced by early settlers. The attention to historical accuracy and immersive exhibits makes it an educational and engaging experience. The open-air setting amidst nature adds authenticity to this nostalgic journey, making the Historical Village of Hokkaido a must-visit for those intrigued by Japan's frontier history.

Wow a great collection of old buildings that have been moved there from late 19th century administrative buildings to a herring processing factory. In one place you can see so many buildings and even get into those buildings.
Amazing place. Needed more than the 60 mins I planned for it. I guess a good 2-3 hours would be fully used in this place.
Getting there was a bit of a hassle. I ended up taking the subway to shin Sapporo and take the taxi from there.

Moerenuma Park, a creation of sculptor Isamu Noguchi, is a sprawling artistic landscape in Sapporo. Once a waste disposal site, the park now showcases various artistic elements amidst lush greenery. Visitors can marvel at the giant Mount Moere, the Hidamari glass pyramid, and the impressive Sea Fountain that shoots ocean water 82 feet into the air.
One of the most beautiful parks in the world, designed by Isamu Noguchi. The access is not very convenient but totally worth to see!
Bus only runs in every one hour, cab costs roughly 4,000 yen from city center.

I visited Moerenuma Park for the first time in over 10 years to take my dog for a walk. I climbed a mountain that can be called the symbol of Moerenuma Park with my dog! !
There are stairs so it's easy to climb, but it's quite high so both my dog and I could barely climb it. The view is amazing ~ It was windy at the top.
There were a lot of tourists, probably because it was a three-day holiday. There are many people with dogs. Rental bicycles are available near the parking lot. There seemed to be something for everyone, from small children to adults, and people with children in particular were renting them. A large river flows through the park, and many spot-billed ducks were swimming around. There are also restaurants and shops inside the park.
Next time I would like to enjoy a meal at the restaurant.

Visited on 1st May. The leaves are grown in on the cherry blossom trees but it's calm to walk around. Can imagine it would have been incredible during full bloom. You can hire bikes for 200 yen for two hours but the seat doesn't adjust very high if you are a tall person.

Very large park designed by famous architect Isamu Noguchi. Although the park itself is great and wonderful, however there is not much food option beside a western restaurant that is not so cheap. Highly recommend to eat before visit the place.

This is a park designed by Isamu Noguchi, who has visited it many times since it first opened!
Admission and parking are free, and the park is vast and has lots of fun to play in. Even when it's crowded, it's a large park that doesn't make you feel crowded.
In the spring, the cherry blossoms are beautiful and there are unique play equipment scattered around, as well as a beach pool and canal that are safe for small children.
You can enjoy day and night fountain shows, and you can climb the lowest mountain in Sapporo in less than 10 minutes.
There are bicycle rentals and various sports facilities, and the stadium is currently being renovated so that it can host official games.
There are large grassy areas throughout, and you can spend the whole day waiting for your rugs and playthings.
The Glass Pyramid has an event space, an art exhibition by Isamu Noguchi, a restaurant, and snacks available for purchase, so you don't have to bring your own lunch.
During the busy season, there are food trucks in the square, making it a very cozy park.

It’s a huge open park. Would be nice if you wanna cycle around for half a day. We mainly visited the glass pyramid which is an art space. Unfortunately there was no current show when we were there. However it was still nice to see the architecture and enjoy the unique space.
Jessy Tsang — Google review
The park features various pyramidal objects, a glass pyramid like at the Louvre, a step pyramid that reminds of pre-columbian America, a small pyramid features at the eastern wooded playground area, a square platform juts out and up triangularly above the soccer fields, a large mound is the largest structure and reminds one of steppe Kurgans or the pagan burial mounds of Scandinavia. There is much to do with the fluidity of structures of interconnected circles and straight lines, as well as the intentional use of glass, wood and stone, and how these create a particular modern ambience and become both practical and aesthetic in what is after all a public park. But you can say this park is also a fabulous work of art. And it's free, and the views are great!

If you do not have small children, then it is better to dedicate this park after five o'clock in the evening. Keep in mind that there are a lot of foxes that come out at this time and there are more of them than people on weekdays. In the evening there are very beautiful landscapes. We love to take photo and video sessions there. I don't know why, but the sky in this park seems to be especially beautiful at sunset.

A vast green park that became the posthumous work of Isamu Noguchi. There are various art installations in the park, including the glass pyramid, and you will want to take lots of pictures. Even the toilet is art.
Round pyramids and square pyramids are challenging even if they are tall. The top of the mountain overlooking the wide site is the best! Because of the size of the park, you will get plenty of exercise. It's amazing that parking and admission are free! If you want to go around various places, we recommend renting a bicycle (paid 400 yen), but if you only want to visit Moere Beach, you can walk. Moere Beach is shallow, so it looks good for small children.
You can bring your own lunch. For the time being, there is a restaurant inside the glass pyramid, but be careful of the business hours. The take-out shop for light meals on the first floor is also sold out, so if you want to use it after 13:00, you should buy it elsewhere.

It’s a museum, if you visit this place at December, the place so beautiful, you cant play with the snow here.
But, dont come here at the afternoon/dark, because it’s so hard find the transportation to the city. We try to find taxi but it’s none.

I took bus No. 61 from a station (I don’t remember what the station name) and I don’t know what went wrong when I alighted at Moerenumakoen nishiguchi (just like instructions in the picture), I felt like I was lost. There’s no park nearby and when I search in google maps, I had to walk 34 minutes to reach the park! The place got nothing much to offer.

Great park, designed by the famous artist Isamu Noguchi. There’s a bus (No 6) at XX:20 and XX:50 every hour. Only the XX:20 go directly into the park while the other will stop nearby and you’ll have to walk to the park.
Wide open space with minimum supervision and cameras. Free of charge. You can rent a bicycle for JPY 200 (2 hours). Bring lots of water, although there are some vending machines inside as well. Don’t miss the fountain show n
