Best stops along Acapulco to Huatulco drive
The top stops along the way from Acapulco to Huatulco (with short detours) are Playa Zicatela, Barra Vieja Beach, and Punta Cometa. Other popular stops include Bioluminiscencia Laguna Manialtepec, Parque Nacional Lagunas de Chacahua, and Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga.
Icacos Beach is a lively destination that features numerous water activities like scuba diving, jet skiing and banana rides. The beach offers rentable chairs and umbrellas for visitors to relax while enjoying beautiful views of Acapulco. Beautiful area. Stunning sunsets.

Nice beach, calm ocean, nice swimming. Umbrellas and chairs available for a price or as perk if you order food and drink.... depending on the location. Beautiful views of Acapulco. Some of the vendors walking around were a bit aggressive, but didn't diminish our wonderful experience.

I always went there because it was simply beautiful along with sunsets. The water is gorgeous. The high rise hotels give it that international appeal with the mountain backdrop.
Many of the world's best resorts can be found there.
Unfortunately and sadly in the last 15 or so years crime, drugs, etc. has taken its toll on city and it's lost some of its glamour. Acapulco is a stunning place and deserves a second chance

Very clean and nice beach for swimming and water sports. Different kinds of water sports are available like Banana ride, jet ski, scuba diving. The waves are little strong. so needs to be careful always, if you're not a good swimmer.

Barra Vieja Beach, situated about an hour outside of Acapulco, is a serene and secluded beach known for its breathtaking landscape. Visitors can indulge in a range of enjoyable activities such as horseback riding along the coastline or treating themselves to a personal message under the tents available on the beach. The local cuisine, particularly seafood dishes, is also worth exploring while at Barra Vieja Beach.

Sand and sea - the seelevel sinking very gently but the currents can be tough though.

Volveré a ir.

(Translated by Google) Quiet beach, it does not get crowded (at least not like Caleta, Majahua and Pto. Marquez), the waves are not so calm but the sea at a prudent distance is not that deep and many people go swimming and playing.
The sand is soft and it is very comfortable to sit or walk on the beach.
The restaurants are super good, many on the beach and the people are very friendly.
The only bad thing are the horse abusers exploiting their animals (as long as they don't work) but fortunately the people who come to this beach are more educated and do not condone the exploitation so the ATVs are more successful.
It is the beach with less garbage that we visit in Acapulco.

Campamento Tortuguero “Playa Hermosa”
Animal protection organization
Nature & Parks
Campamento Tortuguero "Playa Hermosa" is an animal conservation organization in Acapulco that works tirelessly to protect three different species of turtles. They embark on nightly beach patrols, searching for mother turtles laying their eggs and carefully relocating the nests to their protection camp. Once the eggs hatch, they assist the baby turtles in reaching the ocean safely.
If you consider yourself an eco-tourist, this is a great way to learn about sea turtles and get to see them up close and personal as the newly hatched babies make their way to the sea. The work they are doing is amazing and the staff is passionately knowledgeable. I visited as a surprise for my 50th birthday and it was life changing.
CPT Jay Schulz — Google review
Three turttles especies that come to the coast of Acapulco to laid their eggs. You will learn about the tireless work of walking long hours along the beach at night searching for mother turtles laying their eggs, bring the whole nest to the protection camp and planted the nest at the patio of the house, wait for the eggs to hatch and live the experience of helping a baby turttle reach the ocean. Then, We are going to go to Barra Vieja Lagoon to do a wonderful lagoon tour. We are going to sail through beautiful mangroves, see many different kind of birds go to a lily flower sanctuary and get the clay mask that cleans the impurities of your skin.

Parque Nacional Lagunas de Chacahua is a stunning coastal area with five lagoons and sandy shores perfect for swimming and surfing. The location also offers birdwatching opportunities, among other activities. Accessible via HWY 200 or La Costera towards Rio Grande, the park is just an hour away from Puerto Escondido. Visitors can hire Lancheros to take them to the national park, which costs between 1500 to 2000 MX pesos.
The cellular and internet connections and wifi are not always working properly but you can make connection with the sea, the lagunes, the excellent waves to surf and the cheaper prices...In chacahua, the people are nice , the nature wonderful.

Transportation from Puerto Escondido:
any Collectivo Shared Van service direction Rio Grande- tell the driver you are going to Chacahua National Park and need to exit at El Zapotalito. The stop or "parada" is on the main highway at a dirt road intersection. Cross the highway and wait at the small wooden Collectivo stand. A Collectivo Taxi will cost $25 Mxn for 10 min drive to the lancha /boat docks. Here is the tricky part! Make sure you use the far LEFT docks for the "local" lanchas. Google Maps "Lancha Collectivo" in El Zapotalito.
This is where the lanchas are reasonable in price. The local captains are kind and fair. Direct non stop from El Zapotalito to Chacahua $200mxn per person. Or in Collective lancha to the Collective Camionetta to Chacahua is $50Mxn per person. Find Felipe he owns his own small lancha and is very kind for a Direct ride without Camionetta. WhatsApp +529541479971.
**CAUTION: DO NOT use the Lanchas at the far right side from where the Collectivo Taxi stops- they have a large colour sign with prices showing ..Tour of Mangroves $3,500 total trip and $2,500 direct nonstop to Chacahua total trip. THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND A COMPLETE SCAM!! Walk to the far left and use the "local" lancha Captains. We had no idea and were 3 people to share the cost..$830 per person from these "sharks"!
The beach and cabanas: Beautiful- Spectacular!! Stay on the Ocean side as the Lagoon side is less expensive but is run down and swimming is among the lancha boats going back and forth.
The Centre square has tiendas and restaurants- Chacahua Wings is very good, the Guacamole served at the place to the right of Wings is amazing, the Barbacoa Burritos are so good across the square from Wings! The centre square is where the Collectivo Camionetta drops off and picks up passengers for El Zapotalito.
Go visit Miguel at the restaurant beside Cabanas El Paraiso fir amazing, delicious Enchiladas Verde! We loved our private room with toilet and shower and mosquito nets at Cabanas El Paraiso...right on the ocean beach..with hammocks and bar.

What a gorgeous place to spend the day. You will have to take HWY 200 or also know as La Costera towards Rio Grande. It is 1hr from puerto escondido. You will have to pass Río Grande an take a left on Chacagua. Down the road You will get into the lagoon and there will be different Lancheros that will offer You their service to take You to the nacional park. The amount berries between 1500 to 2000 MX pesos. It is worth going to chacagua. An amazing place to stay or go for One day.
Josue Vargas — Google review
We visited at night for the bioluminescence lagoon, and oh my gosh. It was pure magic.
The ride to the lagoon itself was so much fun, zipping around the mangrove canals in the dark, avoiding fishing nets with all kinds of birds and bats flapping over head.
And the bioluminescence? Bright, magical, and a one of a kind experience. Definitely a must see and well worth the hour drive from Puerto Escondido.

I'd say this place is one of the hidden gems that this part of Mexico has, people are so cool and welcoming, the whole are is a great place to relax and enjoy being there. Recommended 100%

It's a bit if an adventure getting here but well worth it. To get here from Huatulco you need to take at least 2 buses, a taxi, boat and then a truck it's a fun trip but you're looking at about 5-6 hours of travel (at least). Once you are there you have a boatload of restaurants to choose from, plenty of cabanas to rent and access to beach camp grounds. The natives are incredibly sweet and welcoming. The views are breathtaking and the waves are a surfers delight.
Aj Herrera — Google review
Very beautiful place, worth the visit. It's quiet and peaceful. If you want a break from the city this place is perfect. No internet or service. So if you can adapt to this life it's amazing. The locals are one of friendliest people I met in Oaxaca!
Playa Bacocho is a significant turtle-nesting site and boasts of its picturesque beach clubs and stunning sunset panoramas. This beach in Puerto Escondido has minimal infrastructure, making it a tranquil and verdant spot to relax. It is highly recommended to witness the release of baby sea turtles every day at 5pm during hatching season for a fee of $100mxn per person, which supports the volunteer group that rescues these marine creatures.
Playa Bacocho is a beautiful beach located in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Visitors can enjoy the soft sand, clear waters, and breathtaking sunsets. Additionally, the experience of releasing baby turtles into the sea is emotional and unforgettable, making it a must-do activity for anyone visiting the area.
sebastian ferreyra — Google review
Great beach to see the baby turtle release, if you want to release them you need to pay 150 pesos. The sun down on this beach has the best views!!!! You need to be very careful to swim. Go at 18:00 +- to enjoy the above.
jose luis Pulido — Google review
The turtle release is kinda cool I really like that they do as safe guarding the turtles and giving them a future. However, I feel the whole event feels quite unnatural with lots of people crowding on the beach releasing the turtles. My turtle I’m sure got eaten straight away by the seagulls as they know when to come as they see the crowds so was a bit sad to see.
Joe Thomas — Google review
Wow, is all I can say. Such a nice beach. Release the baby turtles, then stay for the sunset! Only downside is that there are no food vendors there and the waves are a bit rough. Must do for all Puerto visitors imo. Bring umbrella as there is no shade. Price for turtle release has increased to 150mx
Errol Lewis — Google review
Great big beach, not easy to swim, huge waves, can get crowded. The properties around here appear to be making it more difficult to access it, hope that doesn’t get any worse than it already is.
Rohit Kumar — Google review
Incredible wild and unspoiled beach! Absolutely stunning sunsets too. I really hope they don’t let this one become gentrified like in Spain or Italy.
Andy McMullin — Google review
The beach itself is lovely and sandy but the highlight by far and away is going at 5pm and releasing baby turtles into the sea. You pay 100 pesos per turtle but this goes toward the conservation and is incredibly worth it. Once you release the turtles be on the look out for crabs and gulls as there is nothing more upsetting than seeing your turtle getting pulled into a crab hole or whisked away by a hungry gull!
Max Hofmann — Google review
The most special beach in Puerto Escondido! Highly recommend releasing a baby sea turtle. 5pm everyday - 100 pesos per person. The money goes toward the volunteer group that helps rescue the turtles.
Ciera Mayes — Google review
Probably the most beautiful beach in Puerto. It’s very quiet and green since there is not much infrastructure, only two beach clubs. At 5pm everyday they release baby turtles ($100mxn) during hatching season. Beautiful sunset too. Bring shadow and drinks!

Playa Coral, located near Playa Bachocho in Puerto Escondido, offers a serene escape from the bustling main beaches. The Pacific waves are relatively calm here, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors can explore an abandoned hotel that was left overgrown after a hurricane hit the seafront several years ago. While there are no vendors on the beach, it is known for its cleanliness and peaceful atmosphere during the week.
This beach is pretty quiet during the week and has many spots in the shade. There are cute dogs running around, playing with the waves. The waves can be strong, don't swim with glasses. To reach the beach directly from the road, you can either pay a $50 fee to go through the hotel or go through a pretty adventurous path on the side. It's fine if you're fit and don't have vertigo
Jadwiga — Google review
This is a beautiful quaint beach. It is not easy to get to if you don’t want to pay at the hotel as you have to walk from playa bacocho and pass many rocks. But it’s worth it for some shade, quiet and a bit of a better swimming area
Leona Liu — Google review
Super nice beach, fairly calm, palms to get some shade, bar with drinks is available. $50 are due for the entry via the Hotel on the hill. The rundown parts (old slides, buildings etc) give this beach a nice and special touch too.
joccolin — Google review
such a nice beach, less crowded, good shade from palm trees. mid-strong waves so people who can swim can easily enter. be careful from the left side of the beach since it stony.
?? ????? — Google review
It’s difficult to access, but worth the effort. Either you walk from Bacocho or pay for access at Hotel Coral, 80 pesos which includes a not so great burger and a drink. The beach is beautiful, quiet, with sugary white sand, snorkeling, and a gorgeous sunset.
Wannabe Worldschoolers — Google review
A hotel has blocked the public access to an extremely beautiful beach, with a locked fence with barbed wire, so that you have to go through the hotel Villa and pay 50 pesos to access the beach. I am fairly certain this is against the law. Also the shut down water park is such a sad waste of opportunity/space.
Kansas Lindsay — Google review
Beautiful beach with rough waves, entrance was through Villa Mexicana. $50/person to enter and $100/per person if you want a hamburger included. The ramp leading down to the beach is pretty steep, so anyone with mobility issues might have a problem going down/getting back up from the beach.
Saba B — Google review
You have to pay to get in here through the hotel (we paid $100 for two at 7am one morning), but it was worth it for sure. The old creepy abandoned water park is amazing and the beach was perfect for swimming. There’s some rocks and bits to walk around on the right too, which was nice.
Trevor Cavell — Google review
A very quiet beach as you need to pay 50 pesos per person to enter. Issue is that it is a steep beach with a strong under-toe so don’t recommend it unless you are a good swimmer. And not for kids. Lots of free shade though. The hotel you walk through looks to be closed but people are staying in it.
Daniel Jones — Google review
Beautiful beach for pictures. Not so good for swimming AND not so comfy since there are a lot of rocks. Not very crowded allthough it was high season.
You can only enter through an hotel (it Charges 50 pesos) or by foot through the next beach.
Mauricio de la Rosa G. — Google review
Went to Playa Coral during our stay in Puerto Escondido for the 2021 Holidays. We really liked the beach, it was very clean, the waves were a bit strong for the kids but it was fun. Near the south part of the beach you could see some coral watching with the sand. We also had to pay to enter through the hotel villa mexicana, because the public side entrance into the beach had a gate and was closed. The hotel charged us $80 pesos, which included access to the near beach pool, a burger and a soda/water, which turned out to be great for the kids because they stayed on the pool almost all day.
Cesar Arevalo — Google review
Came here twice. Not sure how to enter this beach but first time was directed to go thru a hotel's backyard, but after 5 minute walking down from the cliff a foreigner woman living there, turned me back rudely that this is a private area no trespassing and had to walk back up in the heat and make a big circle from Bacocho beach. Second time went through Bacocho beach right away, it is about a 10 minute walk, at the end thru big rocks which might be dangerous at high tide and slippery. Problem is beach is public but the area to approach it looks like is private so you have to take a too long walk to get here and then to get back again. It is nice and very small beach, same waves as in other places, difficult to swim in. There are shades but in the private area, same woman came to us the second time, telling us this is private...so not sure what to say about how this beach works. Before you get to it from Bacocho though there is a big beach with nice restaurant and breathtaking surrounding with beautifully organized palm trees. Maybe it is better to book at one of these hotels on the cliff if you want to come to this beach. Definitely there are not so many people here and from the cliff you have amazing view. Also the hotel on the beach has a nice backyard and a whole little playtown built for kids to play outside.
Oxana — Google review
To access the beach for free you must walk from Bacocho beach which could be a little dangerous due to slippery rocks formation. Or you can pay 80 pesos to enter through Hotel Villas Mexicana which we did. They give you a voucher for a beer and water or a hamburger, not a bad deal and nice scenery. The Hotel is run down and in need of complete repair. The bathrooms facility by the beach is horrendous. The beach itself is nice but rocky and the water cloudy probably due to the recent Hurricane. Also it has strong undertow and big waves only for experience swimmers.

Laguna Manialtepec, a travel agency in Puerto Escondido, offers a peaceful day trip to a beautiful coastal lagoon surrounded by mangroves and wetlands. The area is home to various bird species, including ibises, ospreys, and herons. Visitors can rent kayaks or boats to paddle around the tranquil waters while admiring the stunning scenery.
Chill place to paddle in boat 🚣♀️ around. We came here part of a tour package. After sunset, the mosquitoes 🦟 are brutal out here... it’s happy hour and our block is the mosquitos favorite cocktail.

Very easy walk in this park. You will be pressured to get guild, not necessary. buy Tickets ONLINE. If monkeys or sloth spotted there will enough looking up to know where they are. The guides will have telescope for you to see animals better and find the snakes and small creatures so not a bad idea to hire. They have closed restaurant in park so white faced monkeys not hanging out there. You can bring sandwich and water but NO plastic water bottles.

It’s cool for a few minutes but gets old pretty quick. The light is dimmer than anything you see in pictures - looks like a faint white. Still a cool experience.

Beautiful location. We rented a kayak and paddled around the area for 2 hours. We could have easily spent longer. This is definitely a place for bird watchers to visit. We went early (8am) and by 10am it was getting pretty hot. There was not much wildlife to be seen other than birds, but the trees were gorgeous.

Very impressive almost unreal what goes on the water at night. This time around seen the bioluminescence white 🤍 and was able to swim in the water for about 30 minutes under a floating 🎪 tent... Once in a lifetime experience....

Fake listing. Don’t pay these inflated prices. The laguna/lake is found 20 minutes west of Puerto Escondido, you can see it on the map. Just drive there between sunset and 9:30pm and you’ll only pay 150 pesos to have a tour.

MAGICAL!!!
Tips that I think would be helpful to know:
We booked a lagoon tour via WhatsApp with Restaurant La Rosa de Monterrubia, a lovely chap named Antonio. We spent a little extra on a private tour so we could go later when it was fully dark (very important - light and full moons are no bueno). Antonio gave us a price much lower than the larger group tours we were trying to book from the bigger places. We got a taxi from PE which took about 20 min each way. Arrived 8:15pm, well after sunset.
It was a little spooky pulling up to the restaurant when it was dark, after all the other tourists have left. But Antonio greeted us straight away and walked us down a wooden walkway to the dock.
A 20 min boat ride along the lagoon takes you to the swimming area where the luminescence is indescribable. That would’ve been more than enough value for our money. But we then cruised another 15 min or so to where the river meets the lagoon, and that is where I won’t spoil the magical display that awaits you. You CANNOT swim in this area, which has crocodiles, but if you’re lucky you’ll see their red eyes in the light and get a thrill.
The stars were incredible to gaze during the serene drive back on the calmest waters you’ve ever seen (sit up front).
Highly recommend!

One of the most beautifully places I've been, must to go
Playa Carrizalillo is a stunning beach located in a sheltered cove to the west of the center. It is well-known for swimming and bodyboarding, as well as being an ideal destination for beginner surfers. To access the beach, visitors must descend a lengthy staircase of 157 steps. The beautiful surroundings, including high cliffs that encircle it, make Carrizalillo an awe-inspiring sight.
Loved the beach. We must of gone when there was a storm moving thru the area because the waves everywhere were huge. Here we were able to get into the ocean with some caution and enjoyed a day at the beach. Lots of stairs, but worth the hike.
Ismael Ramirez — Google review
A beautiful beach - great for beginner surfers. But not for those who can’t handle stairs as there is a very long set of stairs to get to the beach and back
Leona Liu — Google review
Lives up to the hype, it's a gorgeous beach. Clear water, medium waves (just enough to have fun) and sand that doesn't stick everywhere. Top3 in Mexico so far.
BD — Google review
The beach is nice enough but I don’t recommend coming here any longer since the palapas are part of a cartel and ask you to consume for 250 pesos if you want to sit on a broken plastic chair. You may be able to haggle but this is not what I want to argue about on a beach day.
Anita Stettler — Google review
Playa Carrizalillo is a popular beach in the region and a must-see when visiting Puerto Escondido. Featuring a secluded cove filled with beach bars, umbrellas, golden sands, medium-sized waves for surfers, and swaying coconut palms along the shoreline. Playa Carrizalillo Oaxaca really is a hard-to-beat destination.
Giovanni Negri — Google review
The beach by itself Is gorgeous. Great for swimming since waves are very small. Completely surrounded by mountains/cliffs with unique views. Not so great for watching the sunset and since it Is very small it Is almost always very crowded.
Avoid visiting it on high season.
Mauricio de la Rosa G. — Google review
Best beach to surf. Not if you want to spend a quiet day at the beach just to swim. The beach is small and crowded with surfers, but gives you a feeling of the vibe! Go there if you want to have nice surf lessons!
Lorenz Schrempf — Google review
A beautiful beach for swimming as the waves are gentle. Also, I swam a bit further out and found turtles swimming beneath me!!
Rachel A — Google review
Nice beach with amazingly looking water. We surfed here and also came for a swim. Quiet and peaceful in the mornings. A short walk from the main street, beware of 157 steps to get to the beach itself!
Anastasia S — Google review
Probably the best beach in Puerto Escondido. The waves were still strong, but not as strong as Zicatela beach - so you could still go in, without the fear of being swept away. If you want very mild waves - Puerto Angelito and and Manzanillo beach are probably the most mild ones as far as waves go. But Playa Carrizalillo has the best views and the most beautiful sand.
Lily Peterson — Google review
This is a very small and extremely popular beach with gorgeous, slightly course sand. If you want a lounge chair you will be sitting right next to someone else. Unlike a lot of beaches, it is protected from a rip current, but there was no bloody way I was going for a much-wanted swim with all those learning to surf a few meters out: seemed like a recipe for disaster. As far as the STAIRS go, it was a four minute descent, tops, many senior locals were handling it, so could you!

It is a beautiful beach but during high season, there are too many people.
Puerto Angelito is a cozy, tree-bordered beach that offers serene waters suitable for snorkeling and paddle boarding. This small bay boasts several restaurants where boats depart to tour the area's attractions. Crowded particularly on weekends, visitors can access the site free of charge but should bring their own shade or make use of the restaurants' accommodations at higher prices. Local vendors sell fruit, snacks, and souvenirs on the beach while private beaches can be reached by boat tours from this location.
Beautiful local beach. Not much room on the sand, due to boats. Crystal clear water and many vendors. Can get busy, but worth checking out. Can book boat tours here very easily.
Errol Lewis — Google review
A good beach, but too many kids in the water!
Luisa Almeida — Google review
Spent a few hours here. Although it is a small beach the water is beautiful! I can see how it can get crowded fast since it’s a hot spot for the locals. There’s not much room for sun bathing but if you dine at the restaurant you’re able to leave your stuff there to swim about in the water.
Carol-Marie — Google review
Little bay with beach. Restaurants around and boats leave from here for tours. It is very crowded during the weekends especially. Free to enter, no shade, if you need shade have to have your own umbrella or sit in the restaurant. Of course restaurants here have higher prices. Locals sell fruits, snacks and souvenirs on the beach. It is right beside Manzanillo beach.
Oxana — Google review
Took a boat tour from here to see private beaches.
Horacio Garcia — Google review
Don't recommend. It's way too small for how much businesses have encroached on the beach. You can barely see the sand. It's a pretty disappointing beach. Go to Playa Manzanillo for calm waters, or Carrizalillo where the waves are a little strong and I only recommend for people who know how to swim well.
Vanessa Arroyo — Google review
Nice and beautiful beaches, but unfortunately the sea was very aggressive and the force of the waves was dangerous especially for children, the same at carrizalillo and Manzanillo, stay away from the rocks because the waves drag you and smash you again the rocks, I learned that on a hard way, very dangerous. We was there at the middle of june
Aracely — Google review
It’s a lovely bay but very very busy at the weekends. At one point there was 5 rows of people in the shallows making almost impossible to enter the water. You can see some fish in the rocks if you are early in the morning and there are many many bars and restaurants to grab food or drink, most are more expensive than the other local beaches. It is nice but go early and on a weekday.
Henry Harry — Google review
Clean beaches, not a lot to do. So it's up to you, if our looking for easy access and pretty beaches, you will like it. If you're interested in activities, move on, these aren't the beaches you're looking for.
Rick Yerby — Google review
Great for snorkeling, I have only been snorkeling twice before and I didn't need a life vest because the water is very buoyant there. There were a lot of locals there but everyone was friendly. No one minded that I put up my beach tent and flew my drone.

Puerto Angelito is an excellent beach for families with kids and older adults. No big waves, lots of floaties for rent and boat rides. Occasionally you will come across ice cream sellers. 20 pesos is what I paid for and it was well worth it. Very good!! Make sure you throw out your garbage.
Puerto Manzanillo is connected to Puerto Angelito via walkway in between and is less crowded. Waves are a little bigger here. Crystal blue waters. There are rocks separating both beaches if you want to explore and collect rocks and shells.

Playa Zicatela is a renowned destination for surfers worldwide, famous for its 3km-long beach and powerful waves commonly known as the Mexican Pipeline. The heart of this action lies at the northern end of Zicatela, but caution is advised as the waters can have strong undertows that make it unsafe for novice surfers or anyone without a board. Lifeguards are frequently called to rescue those who ignore warnings.
Waves, babes, and sunsets. This beach is great for the experienced surfer and there is more than enough room to spread out and find a a place to sunbath in peace.

Hit it 👍🏿! It is obviously a very long beach so you could be anywhere you want. Near people and restaurants and music or just by yourself. Be careful in the waves as they're actually quite powerful and strong. I got really lucky sitting there. A turtle made its way out of the water. Laid some eggs and then made its way back to the ocean.

We had a thrilling and exciting journey to Cascada La Reforma, opting for a scooter instead of other transportation methods. The roads were filled with adventure, featuring numerous donkeys, cows, and horses along the way. The waterfall itself was absolutely stunning and we were fortunate enough to have it all to ourselves. We highly recommend visiting this beautiful spot.
The rating is not only for the waterfall, which is fairly small but still amazing to experience, specially if you get there when no-one else is there. The rating is also for the vistas you see when travelling to the waterfall, which are incredible in the mountains.
Do note, to get there, you can go by taxi, and I would assume some kind of collectivo, or by motorcycle - which I did. It takes 2h from Puerto Escondido, and much of the mountain roads are uneven dirt roads. If you are not a confident biker, I would not recommend driving by yourself, but it can of course be done, it just takes some more time.
If you have the time and want to explore outside of the beaches of Puerto, love nature and the stillness of it, then I recommend this day tour.
Daniel Hofvander — Google review
Look the place itself is beautiful on a non rainy day. Because it had rained the water was so ugly . I couldn’t let my kids get in. You have to cross rushing water to get to steps on other side. I came many year ago and it was great. The roads to get there now are really really bad. It takes a while because of how bad the roads are. There is barely ever a smooth spot. It is bumpy , areas where the road near the edge has broken off, deep deep holes etc. I drove a SUV with all wheel drive, I would never want to put her through that drive again. We had to get some work done afterwards to get her feeling right again. I wouldn’t go on a bike, my husband said he could see why people might try , ha ha I wouldn’t . . If you got a tough ride ( suv / truck ) you could probably make the trip. They have cabins but do close up at night. Basically you would be alone out there. The gentleman taking 20 pesos I believe it was, was very nice .

Amazing experience. One of the most beautiful waterfalls I’ve ever seen. The water is nice and cool. However, be warned, add an extra hour to whatever google maps says and give yourself time to get out before dark. 1.5hrs of riding were on washed out cliff side paths. It also rained on our way back which makes the path very slippery and muddy. We did it on a dirt bike. My partner is a very skilled rider and found this extremely advanced. Not for beginners or even intermediate riders.

Did this with a scooter and we were absolutely fine! Fun, adventurous roads with many donkeys, cows & horses on the way. The waterfall was beautiful and we had it all to ourselves! Would recommend :) We left Puerto at 12.30 and felt a little rushed as we didn't want to return in the dark, so if you want more time at the waterfall, leave a little earlier!

Great experience and an awesome way to help out nature and the locals who have taken on this endeavor. Our guide was informative and explained the release procedures well. Children will enjoy the experience very much (our grandsons had a great time). Time on the beach is around 30 -45 mins.
If you do go, opt for the evening release as it limits the birds preying on the baby turtles (too dark or past the gulls bedtime). Also, if you're coming from the La Cruceita area, expect the trip to take up to 2 hours each way depending on traffic. The road is very windy, and there seems to be a speed bump every few meters at times, even on the 4 lane divided portions. Yup you're gonna have a sore backside.
We left la cruceita around 4:30 getting back a little after 9:00pm.
Definitely worth it.

If you visit Huatulco or Puerto Escondido, add this place to your itinerary. My family loved it, the crocs, the deer, the iguanas it was all wonderful. Just be careful with “Chupis” (monkey) he is a little too friendly he might try to grab your drink. This place is a sanctuary to certain animals and most of the workers are volunteers, the funds you pay to enter the park are used to maintain the animals. So please tip if you can. We were also offered the ability to release the baby sea turtles, the experience was amazing. You pick two turtles and watch them go into the ocean. I highly highly recommend this place. Cash only.

One of my favorite beaches on the Puerto Escondido coast. This beach is great because you can really swim here and it is filtered with lots of sun and rock formations that are easy on the eye. There are lots of places to shop and get food and while the restaurant lounge options are limited they are there if you come early to get a seat. The waves are nice and the sand is lovely. It’s dust Next to Zolita and adjacent beaches so there’s lots to see and do in this area.

Mazunte is the best base to explore the coast of Oaxaca! Despite the high number of foreigners living I and visiting Mazunte, it still maintains the small town feel as a Pueblo Mágico. It's more affordable than the other major touristic beach towns. The beaches are clean and nice. There's a few bays with calmer water for swimming. You can reach the larger beach towns in under 2 hours by car.

Super chill beach. I loved it. It's quiet not to many people. The waves don't pick up until 12 and settle down around 1600. 100% recommend

Lovely beach with a very small town -- just a couple streets with restaurants. Hippie vibe like everyone says (if you do not want that, go to the next beach over San Agustinillo. We spend several days there also). Very relaxing. Bit of a challenge not knowing Spanish. Go to Laguna Ventanilla Reserve -- 10 minutes away -- well worth your time -- guides speak English. We would go back.

Beautiful beach! There are some nearby rocks where can be seen colored fish. The water is pristine and clear. The food and people is very nice. Punta cometa is near also a must if you are around.

The food was good and the beach was rough but it was like that due to the season.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS before visiting Mazunte, please get a toy for this good boy who loves to play fetch at the beach . I unfortunately found him on the last day here and couldn’t find a place that sells toys for dogs. He is so smart and friendly, I keep thinking about him . I wish I could do more for him 💔

No for children. Waves are brave and enormous. Surfers enjoy this place

Waves are too big to swim.
You can do whale/Dophine tour for 200 pesos.

One of the best beaches in the area. Great for walking and running, with good waves to do surfing, and a really nice cove for swimming and snorkeling. The only reason for not 5 stars is that you are competing with the locals that are fishing in the same cove. There can easily be up to 10 people fishing in the small cove (not sure how long they are going to still have fish there). I would not recommend swimming/snorkeling at the same time all the fishing is happening. Also, be careful of the currents where the surfing waves are, 2 people had to be rescued in the 4 days we were there.

Ate lunch at the restaurant on the left at the very end of the street leading to the beach. Good service and great coctel de camaron.

Beautiful town, beautiful beach. I loved this town and the beach, we where there during the week so it wasn’t as busy, not sure how busy it would be on the weekend.
Streets are narrow and there is always a lot of people so I recommend parking in the beginning of the street, if you take the rinconcito street. Three is another street that takes you to the beach and I think that one is less busy.
The waves are not to big so it is nice to go for a swim.
Punta Cometa, a rocky promontory at the southernmost tip of Oaxaca state, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and is a popular spot for locals and tourists to watch sunsets. Visitors can enjoy a challenging hike along steep dirt paths with some stairs to reach the vista point. The park prohibits alcohol and enforces searches at the entrance. The location also provides an opportunity for whale-watching as numerous whales can be seen during sunset without much effort.
Unreal. Worth the hike! You can’t bring alcohol to the park, they search and stop you at the beginning, but it’s worth it for the view. We saw 10+ whales over an hour whilst watching the sunset and weren’t even trying. Place was busy, but not packed. 100% am going to come again

Don’t get me wrong, this is a gorgeous place to watch the sunset. The views are absolutely breathtaking and unbeatable. But the amount of people that show up is pretty crazy. Like you can’t even take a decent photo because it’s really crowded and there’s people everywhere. Other than that, it’s alright

It is a bit of a hike there on a rough trail. Many people just wear flip-flops. I wold recommend better shoes. Our Teva hiking sandles work great.

Such a beautiful location to view a sunrise or sunset. It’s a nice little hike to the point where you have unobstructed views to the west and east. It’s a popular spot everyday, so be prepared for many other people.

Went here on a little day trip from Zicatela and it was breathtaking. You truly feel like you are in a dream walking this hike during sunset; only about a fifteen twenty minute walk and it’s super worth it. If you have the chance definitely make it out here for a sunset walk.

The highlight of our trip to Mazunte! I was blown away with the views both during the day and at sunset. Sharing an experience as simple as the sun setting amongst a group of people on a cliff side was amazing.....worth the trek!

Great spot for sunset watching and some chilling at the beach. Come with enought time to pick a good spot. Dirt paths and quite steep in some parts, with some stairs. Probably good for fit ones only.

As of April 2024, we were charged a small fee of 10 pesos to get into the area. They seem to limit the number of entries also. Arrive a bit in advance as it gets quite crowded for the sunset. Beautiful viewpoint!

It’s a beautiful place for a sunset, you have to do a 20 min hiking but the view is priceless even though it was little cloudy. I recommend be there at 5 in the afternoon and you can find a good place to sit and wait for the sunset, if you can carry a portable chair, I’ll be better. In the middle of the trail you’ll find a point for inspection of belongings and payment area, the payment is a voluntary amount. Alcoholic beverage are not allowed

10$ “entrance” to maintain the place.

So I don't know if it's just in season but I went twice and didn't got checked and no one asked me for a donation. (Just saying as everyone mentioned this) There's several routes to go there. I went the stairs up from the beach and I was literally having the whole area for myself. Definitely check out the beach to the right of Punta cometa and there's several more paths to walk and explore from there on.
Both times I went I didn't get a real sunset as it started to get cloudy therefore no sunset pictures.

Cam. a Playa Mermejita, 70947 Mazunte, Oax., Mexico
Educational center & museum for the study & rehabilitation of sea turtles & their environment.
The lovely little place, with its all size turtles, was a sight to behold. The dedicated team had a beautiful idea to protect these majestic creatures, but unfortunately, they lacked the necessary funds and visitors to keep it going. It was a heart-wrenching reality, for these turtles were in dire need of protection and the place was a sanctuary for them. Despite their best efforts, the lack of resources and support made it impossible to continue with their noble cause. It was a reminder of the harsh truth that sometimes, good intentions alone are not enough.
Nelson Castellanos — Google review
The history of the place is nice. It was built to help change attitudes in the area towards sea turtles and apparently did a lot for that. But for a visit, the place is pretty sad. The land turtles' tanks are really barren and depressing and the sea turtles tanks are way too small. I recommend taking a boat ride instead to see the wild turtles or perhaps finding a release of the baby turtles. This place is in desperate need of rethinking and renovation.

Cute turtles, underwhelming enclosures. Friendly staff but during our visit there lots of enclosures were empty or in a decaying state. I enjoyed seeing the sea turtles, but wondered for how long they remain there....
K B — Google review
Was excited to go after reviews showed good caring for the turtle but turned out to be a very sad visit.
Some turtles had it good, but 80/90% have a rough go.
Some enclosures have walls so steep out of the water the turtles can't get out, so they're stuck in the water 100% of the time. Others have wooden ramps to get up that, again, are obviously far too steep so they're stuck there.
Some info signs say "these certain turtles like low current rivers" but they have a waterfall flowing into their water.
One tank was so unclean the water was thick and dark green full of algae - the turtles in it had a thick layer of algae on their shell.
I understand it's under budgeted and I'm assuming understaffed (only saw 2 gardeners all afternoon) but most of the issues would be a simple, obvious fix.
Beautiful turtles, sad experience.
Billy Evans — Google review
Unsure about the claims of “rehabilitation” centre, there’s seems to be an unnecessary amount of turtles in captivity. The larger sea turtles in the pool were constantly swimming into the walls of the tanks or floating lifelessly in the water. Feeling pretty deflated..

Visit lasted about 1.5 hours. Buy tickets at the window and then walk up the ramp. Turtles were well cared for. Wish they would have opened the area where they keep the baby sea turtles. We could only see them from above. They don’t release baby turtles here, try Playa La Escobilla for that. Enjoyed our visit!
Marianne Milstein — Google review
Feb '24: Avoid at all cost!!
Sneakily, at the entrance they don't tell you that the sea turtle area is under renovation, so all you get to see is a bunch of land turtles and a handful of baby sea turtles in a bucket. Complete waste of time. Come back in a few months.
Miguel Escutia — Google review
They were under construction so we didn't get charged a fee. They had limited exhibits open but there were people explaining and answering questions in both English and Spanish. It was an enjoyable and educational experience! I look forward to seeing them again once they're back up and running at 100%.

Educational. Learned quite a bit, but it could be better. Aquarium does not have AC or fans, so it can get quick warm inside. The rest of the exhibits are outdoors. Entrance fee is $37 pesos. I Probably dedicated 2hrs tops for the entire site. If you want to skip it, you'll be fine.

Great museum that's showcases many variety of American (North, South, Central) turtles. This center was built to remove the focus from consumption and use to preservation of local sea turtles. This is low season and the center is currently remodeling and expanding the exhibit space. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area. One can also volunteer here (see pics for info). Cost 35 MXN. Can't beat it.

I wanted to wait a little after the retreat was over and let the "glow" fade so I cen really see the changes in me...
This was such a profound expiriance!
I only now realize that my heart was shut.
I keep practicing meditation every da. I keep letting my heart open.
Things have changed dramatically for me in almost every aspect.
I found love for myself and a loving partner.
I get much better at generating an income.
I learnt to put boundaries.
I deal with my demons with love and acceptance.
There is so much more that is happening but it would be too long to type here:)
Cloud and Arturo are amazing! They made me feel loved and safe, never judged, always with a smile and an open heart.
The carma yogis too are a blessing.
Thank you all so much!

Attending the 10-day silent retreat at Hridaya’s Meditation Centre in Mazunte was a transformative experience for me.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in such a serene and nurturing environment.
Under the guidance of Sahajananda, I felt so fortunate to have a leader who exuded wisdom, compassion and the best Humor throughout the retreat.
One of the aspects that truly stood out to me was the sense of safety and security I felt throughout my time at the center. The supportive team ensured that every question I had felt welcome, that allows me to fully surrender to the practice without any worries.
The food provided during the retreat was not only nourishing but also absolutely delicious. Each meal was thoughtfully prepared and served with love.
I recommend skipping the salad, since water is an issue in Mazunte and that can provide from belly pain.
Being part of a community of 150 individuals all engaged in meditation created a powerful energy together.
As I continue to integrate the profound impact of my time at Hridaya’s, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and peace.
I highly recommend this retreat center to anyone seeking a deeper connection to themselves and the practice of meditation, yoga and the teachings of Ramana Maharshi.
I will come back to continue, learn more and go deeper.
Much love to all of you

Where do I even start?...
When I arrived, I was warmly welcomed, and even though I was new to Hatha yoga, I felt quite at home. I stayed in the dorm, which was small and cozy but clean and comfortable. I loved being able to wake up and roll out of bed for morning meditation.
The location is beautiful, being on the top of a hill with a breathtaking view of the sunrise. It's a short walk from the towns of Mazunte and San Agustinillo, both with beautiful beaches and array of vegetarian and vegan restaurants, smoothie/juice bars, etc.
Speaking of food, the food was OUTSTANDING! I always felt full and satisfied, and I learned to eat more mindfully while I was there. I lost some weight without even trying -- a result of eating so many vegetables and savoring every bite.
Module 1 was heavy but incredible. I have a background in meditation so I was already familiar with most of the topics, but it was a good consolidation of my knowledge and interesting to hear about spirituality from a Hatha yoga perspective.
The teachers are awesome and the karma yogis are wonderful too. I met people who I deeply connected with. and who I know will be lifelong friends.
Hridaya helped me let go of the bitterness and resentment I'd been holding onto for so long. Now, I feel so much lighter, and I have accepted their challenge of "integrating life into spirituality". My perspective on life continues to evolve, and I am more curious than ever about spirituality, dedicating much of my free time to reading spiritual texts and sitting in meditation.
If you're ready for real growth, and people who actually give a damn about your spiritual development, look no further than Hridaya. It has had a profound impact on my life and even though it's hard for an extraverted, active person like me to slow down, I can't wait to go back for Module 2 and another 10 day silent meditation retreat. It feels more like home than my actual home now!
Like most things in life, you get out of it what you put into it. So go. Do the work. And prepare to have your mind blown and your heart cracked wide open.

I just attended the 5-day "The Art of Awareness" workshop with Sahajananda and it was such a special experience! Hridaya Yoga Center is great for anyone on a spiritual journey who is not afraid of deep introspection and is looking for teachers who are walking their talk, authentic, full of heart, love, and compassion. In addition, you are a 5-min walk from the beach and are fed healthy nutritious meals.
Anya Laeta — Google review
Oftentimes when I visited yoga centers I had the impression of receiving a self initiated, commercial-spiritual package to make me paying lots of money. The Hridaya showed me, how a real yoga studio/ holistic center should be like. I had the feeling of getting an insight of how real yogis act and what is an honest attitude towards people that visit the center. And with yogis I don't mean just people that put their bodies in special postures or meditate all day (what they also do ;) ) but just the fact that I instantly felt accepted by the whole community and that money wasn't playing such a big part for making lots of Profite. The price I paid for the module 1 intensive course was super fair and I've never learned so much in such a short time. I felt like I received more than I paid and this is also one aspect of really trusting the practice of hridaya Yoga. The teachers were so autentical and full of love and compassion. They really felt and lived what they preached. The whole module changed the way I am looking at things and I will definitely come back again !

I have so much gratitude for everything Hridaya school in Mazunte is offering. It is such a special place with teachers and teachings that are deep, authentic, real! With all the noise of the modern world ( external and internal), coming here for a 10 day silent retreat was one of the best gifts I could have given to myself. Here I found experienced caring guides: teachers who "walk the talk", in-depth philosophy, structure and curriculum that have been effective for thousands of others before me, warm-hearted community, affordable tuition, and, most importantly, a glimpse into "Who am I" and "Why am I here?" I can't wait to return!

I attended a 10 day silent retreat. I booked very last minute and had very little understanding of what I was getting myself into.
I had been trying to meditate for years and was getting nowhere with it. I entered the retreat as a novice meditator and unfortunately I left still a complete novice. But now I have the tools to get better.
It has been almost 3 weeks since I left and the effects on my life have so far been incredibly positive.
The experience in itself was rather unpleasant, sitting for 10hrs a day is not something I enjoy. The lack of external stimulation was underwhelming for the first 8 days. I got extremely stomach sick around day 5 (I don't believe food poisoning is to blame, I think the activation of Manipura chakra played a role... Yes I know how crazy that may sound).
The teachings were incredible. The food was absolutely fantastic, I stayed in the male dorms, which is like a hostel dorm except so peacefully quiet since no one talks.
Bring a towel, a notebook and couple of pens (I wrote 70 pages), a reusable bottle of water, I strongly recommend an alarm clock, flip flops, an eye mask for meditation, and grapefruit seed extract if you can (although they make neem tea and white rice). Keep your mind open and your expectations low and be ready to feel a lot of love for everyone and everything to the point it hurts a little bit in the chest!

I just completed a 3 day silent retreat. I found it challenging, but I highly recommend it. The teachers and the staff were kind, human, professional, generous, informative, and patient.
The facilities are simple but thoughtfully designed. I think women felt respected and protected. The food is simple but good. There price was very fair.
I've never done retreats, I'm not a yoga practitioner, and I've practiced meditation on-off for 10 years. I was expecting a lot of mumbo jumbo, which there is some (it's a yoga retreat so expect some "energy" and "chakra" speak), but overall it never felt pushy, preachy or culty. I thought it was heartfelt and sincere, if you open your mind, body and heart to the message of self inquiry.

I had an unfortunate experience here. After already seeing the lack of racial diversity in the teaching team, I decided to give this place a try.
Some background from me:
I am of North Indian descent, grew up with my spiritual and ancestral teachings of yoga and meditation.
Some history that is relevant:
During the British occupation of India, yoga and temple dancing was banned for Indian people- it was seen as barbaric and deviant. The British also stole 45 trillion dollars of resources and commited many atrocities against Indian people including ignorantly drawing a line through the most heterogenous part of the country in 1947. That line caused "Partition" and a genocide of the Indian people.
I have been connected to and learning yoga through my family since I was a child. I have been teaching, sharing, and participating in yoga internationally since 2012.
I have encountered many yoga teachers who are not Indian that teach in a grounded, culturally sensitive, mature, integrated, trauma informed way. I have enjoyed many yoga workshops from a variety of centers and places. Sadly, Hridaya is not a center I would ever return to.
I signed up for a workshop called Flowering of Love. It sounded nice.
The first question we were asked after sharing our name was how we heard about the workshop. Then the teacher proceeded to ask which poster was more effective in marketing the workshop. We werent asked why we wanted to learn or our intention.
At one point during the day, the teacher made a generalization of men in South India and Myanmar - saying that their second chakras were all out of balance and he witnessed bizarre things in the "East" such as desperate men declaring their love for married women by knocking on their door. I know a lot of Indian men who don't do that. This was an example of subconscious racism.
The day was long with 1-2 hour breaks after each session which involved sitting, talking, listening, dyadic work, and group work. None of it was trauma-informed, at no point did the teacher share his educational background, his life experience or his qualifications relating to the content of the workshop, or cite any sources besides Ramana Maharshi's practice of feeling into the right side of your heart- none of it was justice oriented and none of it was very grounded.
I felt ill by the end of the day. I had travelled a long way, I was pre-menstrual and I could sense my female ancestors were yelling at me to leave. Why was I paying $350 to listen to yet another European man dressed in white talk about relationships and diluted spiritual teachings to a group of mostly women? It felt so wrong. I had a huge migraine.
The cherry on top to this ridiculous day was after dinner (we started at 8:15 and I left sometime around 6:30pm) I told the teacher and his assistant I had to leave because I had a bad headache. The teacher's response was "Ooohh that is too bad, I had a great ritual planned for tonight, we were going to talk about love, can't you join on zoom?" And then his assistant tried to tell me that maybe my headache was a symptom of something.
The appropriate answer for any teacher or any person when someone is not feeling well or healthy is: "oh I hope you feel better soon. Is there anything you need? Have a good rest." Instead, this teacher was all about himself and his spiritual pedestal.
Look back and you will see other reviews where Hridaya has been insensitive to people's physical health. Spiritual bypassing, passive aggression and cultural insensitivity was my experience here.
If you are a South Asian woman, I strongly recommend avoiding this place - they have not done the research and work to know that they are continuing the colonial mentality towards our cultural and ancestral teachings. A lack of ethics and sensitivity is clear. I recommend all the teachers read Susana Barkataki's work or better yet hire someone to audit their diversity and inclusion practices regarding yoga.
I feel like I wasted my money. There is a no refund policy, but to pay for this felt so wrong.
