Gobustan Mud Volcano
Volcano
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Gobustan Mud Volcano is a bit remote, but accessible by car with caution or by hiring a local taxi. Visitors are encouraged to embrace the mud and its eruptions, which can result in unexpected showers. The area's windy conditions make capturing good audio challenging, but the lunar-like landscape provides ample photo opportunities. Whether driving with high ground clearance or relying on local transportation, this unique destination offers an unforgettable experience for adventurous travelers.
If you have car with high ground clearance car, you can go by yourself. Otherwise you need to hire a taxi from town with local drivers.
Azer Mehdibeyli — Google review
Yeeey! Muuuud! There is no better sightseeing than mud volcanos :) In real there is nothing to see, but you can make a couple of cool pictures
Nikita Nakonechnyi — Google review
Nice place to visit. Little far but worth. Very cold winds.

Must visit place. Take four wheel vehicle to visit larger volcanoes. Adventure trip
Abdul Basheer — Google review
This is very small area but nice place to visit. Just few mints away from city. But you cannot spend more than 30 mints there. U need to change vehicle if you r going there with normal car. They increase their prices as they see tourist. Better book tour from your home country if u r taking tour bcs here it's depend on your tour guide if you get good one which is very rare.
Dr Saima muhammad Nawaz — Google review
Very beautiful and unique experience. Active mud volcanoes. Methane gas pushes out the mud from underneath the earth. There are small ones and then there is a big one (extra taxi charge) nearby, a must see. In the big mud volcano, people take a dive in summer and it is supposed to be good for the skin because of the natural minerals.
Also a large water pond that has methane gas bubbles is at a walking distance from the big mud volcano.
After a visit to the Gobustan museum, we went south on the highway to a nearby roundabout and our tour guide hired a taxi for 15 manat, then paid 10 manat extra for the big volcano.
The old Russian taxi took us off the road thru bumpy dirt road ride for about 20 minutes. Enjoy the beautiful landscape of the mountains and the roller coaster ride.
A very unique experience. Loved it.
Umer Ansari — Google review
These mud volcanoes south from Qobustan town are smaller than the ones to the north, but these are still bubbling. Their temperature is suprisingly cold. Accessible on a 10 km unpaved road from Qobustan, local drivers are waiting for tourists at the bus stops. The road itself is kind of an adventure.
Dániel Kuli — Google review
So this is a bit off the beaten track. You can easily drive here though. Most cars should be able to make it if you go slow. Trucks will have zero issues.
Otherwise park at the closest roundabout and hire a Soviet era taxi.
Once here prepare to get a bit dirty. You are going to want to touch the mud and your kids are definitely going to touch the mud.
If you are like us and you get up close you will end up with a mud shower from an eruption if you aren't careful.
It's very windy so good audio on video is hard to shoot. Pictures are plentiful and the landscape looks lunar in nature.
Enjoy the visit!
Bryan Hanna — Google review
This is place with natural phenomenon, gas pushes clayey soil out giving a feel of a volcano spewing lava. The ones i have visited were small and there were no facilities for tourist of any sorts. Its just like in the middle of a desert. The clay is cool to touch but our guide did mention that it is radioactive although at a small scale. If you are curious of mud volcanoes this is a good place to visit.
Harun — Google review
I went there in May. Dazzling countryside and getting here was an exciting rally. Be sure to visit the location.
Péter Miklós Tar — Google review
It is hard to find because there are no signs, but if you look at Google satellite view, you can see the dirt road of off the Western side of Alat. It is inaccessible when it is rainy, and it's quite a hike up a mountain if a car won't take you. However, you are rewarded with a very unique place!

The Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is an archaeological site in Azerbaijan that contains both natural and manmade caves. More than 6,000 ancient rock engravings can be found here, many of which are still intact today. This site has been recognized as a UNESCO-listed Heritage Site. Additionally, the area features the largest mud volcanoes in the world, created by geo-exuded mud.
This UNESCO heritage site is a quiet, peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. There's a museum with historical information and then the outdoor sites themselves.
Worth a visit!

Beautiful place,
Bring your cap and water, and get ready to walk in the open.
Don’t go into caves be careful as snakes are present in the area.
Other than that it is well preserved and joy-able to see.

A different place as compared to routine tourism. Full of picturesque rocks and well maintained. Come here directly without visiting that museum unless you are a real history seeking nerd. Spend some time here and you will enjoy the serenity of this place.

Historically important place showcasing petroglyphs from possibly 15000 years ago
Worth the hour or so trip from Baku
Do wear appropriate shoes and gear as the trek up and around the site is not completely paved, and you'll be exposed to the elements
The museum nearby can help familiarize you with the history and petrolyphs

Beautiful drawings & well preserved . Under UNESCO heritage. Nice place to understand the earliest inhabitants of the place 1000s of years earlier. Better to hire guide for the Museum and the Rock mountains as they have indept knowledge of the place and show all the different types of drawing and geography of the place which is not possible on our own.

If your into history it's a nice place to see how ppl lived many years ago with few signages depicting humans and animals , the site is well maintained
Taher Kaizer — Google review
Expansive rugged rock area with ancient caves showcasing some 20,000 years of rock art. The museum before the rocks in my opinion can be skipped
Adam Jones — Google review
There are petroglyphs from human civilizations carved into the rock here from over 40,000 years ago BC (or so archeologists conjecture). You can see more recent carvings as well. There is a lot of history between 40,000 years ago and the present, and this park (along with a guide - which I suggest) shows and explains what the carvings mean and how to tell what time period they are from based on what they depict, their size, etc... This was one of the highlights of our trip! We haven't seen carvings even HALF this age anywhere else and we travel often! Been to over 100 countries and counting. This was impressive!
Joey Friedman — Google review

It’s a very important place from a historical perspective, showcasing petroglyphs from possibly 15000 years ago. It’s worth the 1 hour trip from Baku.

Fascinating views of the rocky terrain and the petroglyphs - engravings dating back to 20,000 years ago.
The museum along the way is worth a visit before heading to the site, since it gives a good idea of what the petroglyphs mean.
Not wheelchair accessible. No waits required during early visits, However, crowd starts to build up later in the day.

If you want to see the rich historical heritage, as well as feel the unique atmosphere. This is not only a park, it is the place of strength. Highly recommend!
Nestled into a hillside, this funerary monument was built in 1402 for Sheikh Diri Baba.
Nice quite place, visit and take a look into the life of the saint who used to live there
Muhammad Saad — Google review
Stunning Mausoleum built into a rocky hillside. Short walk from the car park above (where you'll be greeted by stray dogs that will sit down and wait for food)
Beware as you use the staircase leading to the mausoleum as there are no rails
Chi Kit Wong — Google review
An interesting monument which seems to be about all major religions.
There are numerous caves around this building unfortunately not everybody is eager to visit them. Personally I consider those caves to be far more interesting than this main monument although this one has gained the highest amount of attention and fame.
Farid Rezaei — Google review
It is said to be the oldest mosque in Azerbaijan and is located in the city of gobustan on the way to Qabala.
The exaltation is a little high and dangerous for the children and its belong to Sheikh Muhammad was worshiping God in the cave here in ancient times and came after him Sheikh Yahya built the mosque in the place and the place of his grave and worship known.
There is also someone inside explaining about the place in Arabic and English.
Mohamed Alhashmi — Google review
Interesting place to visit to learnt about the ancient time during Silk Road. However, nothing much to see in the caves
Jon Ng — Google review
Very informative place and very clean. Very nice staff. Foreigners pay 9 AZN entrance fee. The place is not very big and not filled with a lot of grandeur, but it's worth a visit!
Bram Bessems — Google review
It is historical sacred shrine located up in the hill. Large number of devotees and tourists visit this shrine every day
Amar Guriro — Google review
A unique monument of burial that is seen erected on the rocky mountainsides. I saw similar burial monuments seen on the mountainside of these areas of Turkey and Jordanian too. This Mausoleum of Diri-Baba is something different in nature because it is well made and strongly built since 15th Century. When you come to visit the Mausoleum it is intact and strongly built from sandstone and the interior of the rooms are still well stored. Since it is also a Mosque so you can pray inside too. Be careful if you climb up to the second story of the Building because the steps are too steep and the roofing are too low. There are no side-railings to support if you climb high to the top. Be sure that you are fit and none vertigo-prone! To come and visit this mausoleum-Mosque that until now still intact, undamaged is a strong evidence to know what happened in the past and keep it as an unforgettable historical memory.
Kharmencita Bridges — Google review
Worth seeing tourists attraction
The way going inside is stiff and narrow.
The only I don’t like is there is no steel hand rails in the stairs esp from ground to the mosque - need safety measure.
Entrance for tourists is 5AZN
From gate to main site maybe 500m
Then upstair, you have to fill-up form
John Paul Tuquib — Google review
Nothing much to see. Don't pay 9AZN entrance. Waste of money.
Leila Bo — Google review

You will have to walk and hike a while to reach the spot. But its totally worth the efforts as its beautiful place to click picture and enjoy the nature. There are few small restaurants too which have their own aura when you sit for coffee listening to the sound of waterfalls.

Beautiful waterfall...nature at it best all around...fresh air, lush green trees and nice water stream...climb top of all steps to see the full view and origin of the water fall...
Rafeeque M. Ali — Google review
A scenic waterfall in the midst of a lush green forest. Don’t expect something HUGE while going to visit this place. Summer is the best time to see the place in green, as it becomes White during winter. The area has been converted into a recreational centre and a restaurant which has tables mounted against the rocks to give a great ambience. There are stairs that lead to the mouth of the waterfall but the ascent is pretty steep. Overall, I would rate it 4/5 but it is a MUST VISIT in Gabala
Tanveer Yusuf — Google review
A lovely place
With 7 types of waterfalls to be climbed in stages.
Not accessible to people with disabilities, too bad.
Cafes and a local bakery on every floor of a waterfall.
We really liked it and it is highly recommended

not really a waterfall. just mini streams trickling down a rock cliff. it was super crowded due to the holiday season. it's too much ado about nothing. perhaps worth a quick visit if you have time but do not expect anything amazing. the climb is steep and needs some effort. those not in great health may find it hard to scale, especially level 2 where there is a small restaurant / coffee shop.

What a great way to start the day early morning. Serenity, pure air and mesmerising birds chirps and water sound . Before the crowd is a completely different experience. Was there at 8;30. Unfortunately better work can be done for a mor eco friendly management. Litter collection, wooden kiosk instead of those ugly plastic chairs.

It's worth visiting this place, it was showing when we reached here which added significant value to this place every where it was white and we were feeling like not to leave this place ......there are seven waterfalls in a series for which you have to climb up a little, if you have kids pls hold their hands tightly as it's slippery while snowing.

Amazing waterfall, its free entry, there is small shops in the begining, you can buy fruits and small things. There are also restaurants. First waterfall comes after 50 to 60 stairs. And then another 50 to 70 stairs for 2nd waterfall. Difficult for older people and with infant kids.

The scenery, Cable Car, Room views , Resort Location everything was beyond expectations. If there were more than 5 Stars i would give them more than that... simply Amazing resort! ❤️

I just can say WOW. A very scenery view of the mountains. When I went there it was after light snow and on the mountains there was a sunlight. It seemed more of a painting rather than the reality. I went with a one-day tour so I assumed all of the costs were covered by the tour due its high price. However there was a very nice swing on the top of the mountain which wasn't covered by the tour.

It was an incredible experience. Location of the resort was at the best place i have ever been, reason to write this is because all the activities, like cable car 🚠 , ski ⛷️, etc starts from this resort only, which will give you more relief. Staff at resort were very helpful. Breakfast 🍳 was soo 😋 yum. I stayed two nights there but I felt that it was not enough. This is the place where one can relax and cut themselves from rest of the world. Hope i will visit again 🤟🤟.

We didn’t stay at the resort but visited for a day to go on the gondola up the mountain. The ticketing process was easy and the cable car ride up was nice. There is not much to do once at the top (in the autumn) but it is a very nice view on a clear day. We hiked back down and enjoyed the scenery and quiet of the area. The Burger Station in the hotel served a tasty meal afterwards.

The place is beautiful but was almost empty when we visited. The architecture is great, place is spacious, and very neat. However no one to guide you there. We visited both tomb, and museum. There is no one at the tomb, free to visit no charges. In museum, it costs 2 manat per person, 2 floors containing details about Nizam Gencevi 12th century poet of Ganja however the employees there don't speak or understand English so you are almost at your own. So its worth while to visit if you are in Ganja, because Nizami Gencevi is most famous person in their history.

Very nice and beautiful lake. Unfortunately very hot on summer time. Water color is wonderful. There is a cafe right near the lake. There is a kids playground, but again right in sun and due to heat it’s not possible to play there. Entrance is paid, 2 manat per person. Kids are free. 2 manat for car parking.

This place is worth visiting. Landscape cant be described in words. Its a national forest and they are taking good care of it.
There is an entry ticket which is mkre or less 10 to 15 manat depending on nunber of people visiting. At one point cars will be parked and then you would have to walk down the track to the lake. I also saw old Russain car providing taxi services to the lake. However, I would recommend to walk down the lake since the track itself is amazing, cool and breathtaking.
Highly recommended for nature lovers. The only problem you might face is language barrier. Hardly anyone speaks english over there.

Goygel is a magnificent lake in the western part of Azerbaijan, located on the territory of Goygel region, on the northern slope of the Murovdag ridge, at the foot of the Kapaz mountain, in the gorge of the Akhsu river. It is one of the largest lakes in Azerbaijan.
The lake area is 0.78 km²; the length from south to north is 2800 m, the maximum width is 800 m. The average depth is 30 m, and the maximum is 96 m.
The lake was formed as a result of a devastating earthquake that occurred near Ganja on September 30, 1139, as a result of which the top of Mount Kapaz collapsed in the gorge of the Akhsu River. The resulting dam is Lake Goygel. However, according to the research of many authors, the lake has a glacial origin.
On the territory of the lake there are 423 species of trees and shrubs, as well as medicinal plants. Of these, 76 species are trees and shrubs, the rest form grass cover. On the shores of the lake are found deer, roe deer, bear, wild boar, mountain goat, wolf, fox, jackal, badger, porcupine, wild cat, lynx. Trout is also found in the lake.
The lake is located on the territory of the Goygel national park. The park was created in 2008 on the territory of Goygel district. The total area of the park is 12.755 hectares (127.55 sq. Km).
The park was created on the basis of the Goygel State Reserve, founded in 1925.

The waterfall is made up of two cascades, the upper cascade is 56 meters high and the lower cascade is 25 meters high. The total height of the waterfall is 81 meters
The best time to visit Jermuk Waterfall is during the spring or summer, when the weather is warm and sunny. The waterfall is also a popular spot for hiking and picnicking. There are several trails that lead to the waterfall, and the hike is relatively easy.

Lake Sevan is a stunning freshwater lake in Armenia, covering 5% of the country. It offers sandy beaches, a medieval monastery, and various outdoor recreational activities. While it can be busy in the summer, it's worth visiting for its beauty. The high altitude means that temperatures are not ideal for swimming, but the picturesque views make up for it. Visitors recommend planning to spend more time there to truly relax and enjoy the surroundings.
This is a magical place. The lake is awesome with very clean water. In the island you find the monasteries which add up the beauty of the place.

Lake Sevan is a serene and enchanting destination that showcases Armenia's natural splendour. Its pristine and azure waters are surrounded by lush greenery and stunning mountain vistas, creating a tranquil and awe-inspiring setting. The lake is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world.
During the summer months, Lake Sevan has become a haven for visitors seeking relaxation and outdoor activities. You can enjoy boating, swimming, and picking along the lakeshore. Sevanavank, an ancient monastic complex perched on a peninsula, offers a glimpse into Armenia's rich history and provides panoramic views of the lake.
The town of Sevan and nearby villages offer a variety of local cuisine, including delicious fish dishes, as the lake is renowned for its diverse fish species.
While Lake Sevan's natural beauty is its primary draw, it's important to note that environmental conservation efforts are crucial to preserving its water quality and ecosystems.
Visiting Lake Sevan provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with Armenia's natural and cultural heritage, making it a must-visit destination for travellers interested in both adventure and history.

It’s a beautiful, old monument situated in mountain. Heard it’s resting place for traders using Silk Road. The drive through vandenyats pass was so beautiful, the best views you will get in Armenia. Feels like you are in the road to nowhere. And views of valley from the monument is magnificent.

Hayravank Monastery, situated on the shores of Lake Sevan, is a lesser-known gem compared to Sevanavank. Constructed between the 9th and 12th centuries, this hidden monastery comprises a main church, a chapel, and a narthex gavit. Unlike its more popular counterpart, Hayravank offers tranquility with very few tourists around. Visitors describe it as calm and beautiful, making it an ideal destination for those seeking peaceful surroundings.
Calme and beautiful!

(Translated by Google) There are 16th century gravestones and khachkars in the small walled yard of Hayravank, and outside the wall are the ruins of cells and economic buildings. Hayravank operated until the 19th century. In the 1980s, the monastery was renovated, the dome of the church was rebuilt.
The name "Mardaghavnyats" of Hayravank is connected with a tradition written by Catholicos Gazar A Jahketsu, according to which, in 1381, during the Lenktemur campaign, the abbot of Hayravank, Hovhan, transformed thousands of Armenians captured by the tyrant into doves and released them with the power of the cross with the relic of Christ Khmetirait.

Great place to enjoy the great nature of Ijevan (Tavush region). Extreme activities are well organized and they give enough adrenaline to the participants. The package of Zip-line activities (includes 5 zip-line, rope park and via ferrata) costs 20000 AMD, which is fair and good price also for locals. I enjoyed the park and will suggest everyone to be there at least once.

Amazing experience! We are a family of 3 with a teenager aged 13, took the adventure package: 5 zip lines, via ferrata and rope park. The via ferrata was very difficult for a child (no climbing experience), but under the wise guidance of the guide Artem she managed and was very happy! For adults with no climbing experience it’s fine unless fear of heights. I recommend visiting on weekdays, because on the weekend there are large groups and the wait is long on each spot.
Elena Ermolina — Google review
Totally amused by zip-lines but was unfortunate to go with a Rope Park and Via Ferrata as they were “under maintenance” and no warning of this was given in advance than I was booking a one day full pass. Zip-lines are accessible exactly on each hour, so had to wait for 55 minutes to catch the line although there was no one else besides us.

Yell Extreme Park was "Extremely" fun. The paintball is very fun in groups, the ball rolling thing was strange but exciting, but my favorite has to be the zip line. Even if you're scared, or have a huge fear of heights, do the zip line. The price is only about 10,000 AMD (≈$20) per person, but its about an hour and a half or so long of nonstop fun. I used to have a huge fear of heights, but then I zip lined and realized how fun it is. Dont hesitate, just go for it!

Sevanavank is a well-known 9th-century monastery located on a peninsula in Sevan Lake, about 12km from the town of Sevan. Originally built on an island, changes in water levels have transformed it into a peninsula with picturesque views. Visitors can climb around 250 paved steps to reach the complex and enjoy panoramic views of the lake. It's advisable to bring warm clothing due to windy conditions and lower temperatures compared to Yerevan.
The Monastery is beautiful and a brilliant architectural masterpiece. The major highlight of this monastery is the scenery from the top. Captivating Lake Sevan, with mountains surrounded. It is well maintained and is totally superb. Loved the vibe over there.

This 9th century monastic complex was built on an island in Lake Sevan, now a peninsula because of changes to the water level
Around 250 paved steps (with hand rails) up a hill, the complex offers panoramic views of the jewel of Armenia
Tips:
- it is often windy and feels a good 10 degrees below temperatures in Yerevan so do bring a windbreaker or warm jacket
- it'll be crowded on most days
- some rocks on the steps are slightly loose so do trek carefully and use the handrail
- bring some food to feed the strays there if you want. There were four at the car park below and a pack of four adults and five puppies above when we visited

The monastery is beautiful and gives you a great view over the Sevan Lake. It is quite crowded here, so if you want to have it for yourself, come early!
The area surrounding the monastery looks outdated and abandoned. There are also many tourist shops here (ofcourse). There is a parking at the bottom, afterwards you’ll have to walk up some stairs to get to the top.

First, an interesting fact: the place where the monastery is, used to be an island, back when the lake was deeper.
The buildings are made of stones much darker than of the other monasteries around the country. There are two buildings on top of the hill. There's a third building which toilets (which can also be found on the way to the top).
The view is great, with water all around. It can get VERY windy, to the point that glasses and hats won't be safe.
There are several souvenir sellers on the way to the top, and you can buy some snacks on the street below.

Sevanavank is located on a peninsula at the northwestern shore of Lake Sevan.
You will need a little more of your reserved energy to get there as its located in a hill about 250 to 300 steps. Its a bit steep, however, you can hold the railing or relax somewhere in between.
The view is really worth it when you reach the top- its relaxing and you can see the almost the whole of Sevan Lake.
Please be mindful to be solemn and respectful when entering the Church.
One of the must-visit place when in Armenia.

Lake Parz is a serene body of water surrounded by trees and a walking trail. It offers recreational activities such as renting row boats for couples at the cost of $10 USD. Although it may not be suitable for swimming due to its dirty water, Lake Parz has numerous fun challenges, treehouses for kids, and people enjoying barbecues on the shore. It is recommended to visit during summer when weather conditions are ideal.
Very nice amazing beautiful nature

Terrible crowd, very little actual thought out infrastructure, a single 2 km path, a bunch of restaurants that are not needed there.
A dumpster fire of a parking space.
A nice strip of land ruined by greed and shortsighted planning.

Lake Parz is a small lake located in the Dilijan National Park in Armenia. It is a popular tourist destination, especially in the summer months. The lake is surrounded by lush forests and mountains. There are a number of activities that you can enjoy at Lake Parz.
There are also a few restaurants and cafes located near the lake, where you can enjoy a meal or a drink with a view.
Lake Parz is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. It is a great place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, it is important to note that the lake can get very crowded in the summer.

. Lake Parz (Parz Lich) is located in Dilijan National Park, Armenia
. Very quiet and serene atmosphere
. There are other activities you can do such as trekking/loop trail boat & raft riding and zip line
. Good place for family and friends

It is still extremely cold in dilijan so the lake wasn’t as nice. Nonetheless it’s really lively with a whole kids treehouse and challenge games, and people barbecuing.
The water is apparently to dirty to swim in so it’s not allowed but you can rent 2 person row boats for $10 USD. Probably better to visit in the summer though.

It's one of the funny thing to do for the tourists. The statues are in a roundabout in Dilijan city. It's from a famous Soviet film. Touching the nose of them supposed to bring good luck. There is a small lake there in the side, which is also very beautiful.

Geghard Monastery is a World Heritage site located in the Azat River Gorge in Armenia. It is named after the holy spear that pierced Jesus' side during his crucifixion and was founded in the 4th century according to legend. The oldest chapel still standing dates back to the 12th century, and its Holy Mother of God Church boasts beautiful carvings from 1215.
Monastery carved into the mountain, not far from the temple of Garni (either a short taxi ride or a nice walk along the road if you're feeling brave and it's not too hot outside). There wasn't much tourists when I visited (July 2019) making it a peaceful escape from all the hustle and bustle back in Garni and Yerevan
Tim Paris — Google review
Beautiful medieval monastery complex, partially carved out in the mountain rocks. Located in the stunning gorge of the Azat river. It is a must see place in Armenia.
Igor Pir?i? — Google review
One of the more different looking monasteries, because it seems to have been carved directly on the mountainside.
It is pretty big and looks pretty nice, which several rooms spread among several levels. If you go through the small door on the wall behind the main building, you will find the toilet, which costs 100 drams and is that weird hole in the ground, not very usual in Europe or America. You will also find a nice small bridge going over a small river.
When coming from the parking lot and into the temple, you will find a small trail going up, into an opening on the mountain side. It's just a very small cave with lots of small rocks on its floor. Beware that there might be snakes there.
You can buy souvenirs and snacks in the parking lot.

What a great place filled with history. The part of the church is carved out of the mountain. Most of the artwork is carved directly into the walls of the mountain.
This is another must see place while visiting.
Outside of the church there are shopping stands with local sweets and goods. Negotiations are recommended before buying.

Geghard Monastery is one of my favorite places in Armenia.
The Location of the Monastery is very beautiful and magical between the green mountains and river.
I recommend this place to everyone who wants to visit Armenia although It's not far from the city center.
No entrance fees at all. But you can buy candles to light inside..

The monastery is located in the mountains, not far from Garni and the Stone Symphony. A very ancient monastery, some of the temples are completely hollowed out inside the rocks. Other church are complex structures, consisting of both walled chambers and chambers carved deep into the cliff.

Listed as a UNESCO heritage site. This historical monastery looks like it’s been carved directly on the Rocky Mountains and it’s situated in a beautiful location surrounded by green mountains and river. It’s too crowded spot, better to come early morning.
Parking fees is 200 amd for toilet 100 amd , toilets are not clean. On the way to monastery there is some souvenir and gata bread shops , better to avoid gata bread shops they were very rude and also you will get much more fresh and tasty gata from outside restaurants.
On the way to geghard monastery from garni temple you can find many steet vendors selling fresh fruits and berries on roadsides for cheap price.

Fascinating 'Rock' Monastery. The rock chambers were well preserved. Beautiful carvings on the rock walls and the ceiling. The designs on Cross Rocks were intricate. Unfortunate that the dome of the church was under restoration.

Incredible monastery - definitely worth the visit! It is partially built into the mountain and has some amazing rooms with incredible acoustics.
The monastery is situated a bit out of the way and there is no direct public transport to it. One option to reach it is by a taxi from Garni - about 4 euros each way.

Wow! Just wow. It kind of feels like Indians Jones, when you enter the monastery. You really can feel the history of this place. But that being said it is very well preserved and looked after.
Be sure to take your time while there as it is full of hidden spots and lookouts.

I decided to join the tour going in Grghard Monastery because in photos it was so beautiful. However, you can only get nice shots when you are using drone. I came here on July and it was too crowded because of tourists. I guess this place is nicer during the off season where tpurists are few and you get the time to take photos without photobombers.
Abigail de Guia — Google review
The church was built in two different time periods and consists of two main parts. At the beginning of the 13th century, this area was considered a private property of the Zakarian family. This family was one of the richest families in Armenia and ordered the construction of the outer church in 1215 AD. Years later, a family named "Prussians" bought this property from Zakarians and ordered the construction of an inner church.
Outside the church, above the south door, there is the coat of arms of Prince Zakarian's family. This symbol of the royal lion is similar to the royal symbols of the eastern nations. On the right side of the corridor, there are two stone entrances. The entrance on the left (built in 1240 AD) contains a pond that is filled with spring water. On the right side, there is a small church that was built in 1263 and contains four columns and the tomb of Prince "Papak Prussian" and his wife "Hrozakan". On this tomb there is a figure of two chained lions and an eagle as a memorial to this family. It is engraved. On the left side of the stone steps on the 10-meter hill, there is a small church carved out of raw stone.
I definitely recommend it

Very very beautiful. There were also vendors and musicians outside the monastery. Large parking but steep hill to walk up to the monastery. Very much worth it! You can buy candles on location to light up in church.

Very unique church partially inside a cave. Being so old it has a very interesting history and so I recommend either to read about it before you visit, or have a tour guide. There are lots of hidden areas you can explore, also have an empty bottle to collect holly water.
It’s also a convenient distance away from Yerevan

Unique and marvellous, it's a popular UNESCO world heritage site. There are a number of places to walk to within the complex but it's easy.
Hilary L. Chow FRAS — Google review
It's a old monastery built in 4th century. It's bit different from others as it is partially curved out from a mountain. This monastery is surrounded by cliffs and river. Despite this monastery is compromised several times throughout the history, its still standing with beautiful grace and history. The complex is well maintained as well.
The Haghpat Monastery Complex is a fine specimen of medieval Armenian architectural style, built in the tenth century. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view and comprises multiple buildings such as a church and bell tower. The Sanahin Monastery nearby is also worth visiting as it shares similarity with Haghpat. Unfortunately, both churches are now empty landmarks rather than functional monasteries.
Without exaggeration one of the most beautiful religious places I have visited. Relatively few tourists, the monastery looks ancient and deserted. I felt like I was in a Tomb Raider or Indiana Jones movie. You can get the best photo of the whole complex if you climb the wall at the back of the grounds.

Beautiful monastry with a large stone-carved christian cross under UNESCO protection
As mentioned by other reviewers, it is recommended if you travel with a knowledgeable local guide who could provide a proper introduction and historical facts. Else this would seem like another monastry (which there are plenty in this region...and on the surface they all look similar).

Monastery complex high on the hill overlooking the gorge of the "Crazy" river. The church has frescoes painted in the colours which are on the Armenian flag that show the last supper and Jesus depicted holding the Bible. Very interesting.

Don't miss the secret door behind the oven in the wall. Used for supplies and harvesting at night via the tunnel and cave complex. Imagine if for hundreds of miles in most directions how many of these heritage sites could be enjoyed if they weren't used as tank practice in ethnic cleansing programs.

Garni Gorge is a stunning natural wonder that features an impressive display of basalt rock formations in the form of hexagonal columns along the cliffs. The Symphony of Stones, located below the town, can be reached by taking a 20-minute walk down from Garni village. The gorge is renowned for its massive rock formations that resemble organ pipes and offers visitors a unique and breathtaking spectacle.
Garni in Armenia was an absolute gem, made even more special by our wonderful guide, Anastasia. Her knowledge of the area's history and culture added depth to our experience. Anastasia's warm personality and attention to detail made every moment memorable. As we soaked in the beauty of Garni, it became evident that Anastasia's passion for her country is truly infectious. And to top it off, Anastasia, your voice is truly mesmerizing. Would you please grace us with a song?

This is for the gorge and not for the temple
The symphony of stones are basalt columns. Absolutely stunning place where you can hike down a well paved path surrounded by basalt columns.
Lots of photo opportunities but do be careful of falling rocks (especially after rain) and loose stones that have recently fallen
You can pay for a golf car that drives you up and down but it shares the road with pedestrians so beware
Chi Kit Wong — Google review
The temple at Garni was good, but the gorge was the highlight for me. Massive rock formations resembling organ pipes.
There is a very steep way down from the temple, but walk into Garni village (leave the temple and turn right for about 200 metres) and follow a track down into the gorge. A helpful 4 WD driver may offer a lift for $20US but it really is not necessary as it is a fairly easy walk. Turn left at the bottom and wander into this amazing gorge.
Simon Proudman — Google review
Garni temple is historic and has been tested by time. It can be seen on each stone block that creates the visual wonder from its foundation, pillars and the stone roof... The view behind is breath taking as well, trekking with the local guide is a must. Freshly baked bread and candied fruits are also available . One of the best tourist spot when visiting Armenia.

The Garni Gorge is situated 23 km east of Yerevan, Armenia, just below the village of the same name. On a promontory above the gorge the first-century AD Temple of Garni may be seen. Along the sides of the gorge are cliff walls of well-preserved basalt columns, carved out by the Goght River. This portion of the Garni Gorge is typically referred to as the "Symphony of the Stones." It is most easily reached via a road that leads left down the gorge just before reaching the temple of Garni. Another road leads to the gorge through the village, down a cobblestone road, and into the valley. Once in the valley, turning right will lead to Garni Gorge, an 11th-century medieval bridge, and the "Symphony of the Stones". Taking a left will lead along the river past a fish hatchery, up to the Khosrov Forest State Reserve, and a little further Havuts Tar Monastery

Can't believe Unesco allows Armenia to screw up a world heritage site like this. Restoration is executed terribly and ugly without respect of the original decoration. On top of this the view is obscured by all kinds of installations. It's flooded with tourists.

Fabulous place or in fact places to walk and get some magnificent views of Garni and its surrounding area. Highly recommended.
Lewis Mindy — Google review
Wonderful place. You have the Roman temple from 2000 years ago here to visit on the plateau up top and then, down in the valley, the basalt columns, known as Symphony of the Stones. Not very far from Yerevan, about 20 km, and a 45 minute taxi ride. The basalt columns are amazing as they are sometimes hanging over your heads, hexagonal crystals of basalt formed by cooling lava.
200 dram to walk down the metalled pathway to the Stone Symphony isn't very expensive.
Highly recommended that you see this while in Armenia. People are very friendly and it is nice even in winter. Visited February 2023, cool weather around 5C but still able to visit.

Garni Temple, located about 30 km from Yerevan, is a well-preserved ancient structure dating back to 77 AD. It stands as the only remaining Greek-Romanian colonnaded building in Armenia and post-Soviet countries. Despite undergoing extensive restoration work, the temple still offers an intriguing glimpse into pre-Christian Armenia's cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the site's historical significance and architectural marvel while enjoying the scenic surroundings.
Visiting Garni Temple in Armenia on December 5th, 2023, was a captivating experience. I had the pleasure of visiting Tsakadsor with my family during our tour of Armenia on August 7th, 2023. Despite it being summer, Tsakadsor offered us a refreshing break from the heat with its cool and pleasant weather.
One of the highlights of our visit was the exhilarating cable car ride that took us to the summit. As we ascended, we were treated to breathtaking views of the lush green forests and vibrant wildflowers below. It felt like a journey into a picturesque wonderland.
While Tsakadsor is renowned for its winter activities, such as skiing, the summer experience was equally enchanting. We spent quality time at the hilltop, basking in the serene beauty that surrounded us. The scenery became even more captivating as we descended back to the bottom station, with every turn revealing new vistas.
I highly recommend Tsakadsor as a must-visit destination, especially if you find yourself in Armenia during the summer. It's an incredible place to escape the heat, enjoy a cable car adventure, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this remarkable region. We'll cherish the memories of our Tsakadsor visit for years to come.

Years ago there was an option to buy one pass for 3k and ski on a hill for beginners with an automated mechanism to bring you back up.
Now there's no such option and it is harder for beginners to learn.
Also one of the BIGGEST drawbacks is that the safety is really poor all around the resort. One could slip off the hill if he/she is unlucky, not careful, etc.
But you definitely can have some fun there and enjoy the ride.

Children enjoyed beginner skiing with an instructor (you must hire one instructor per child for AMD 15,000). We also enjoyed the snow tubing. You will spend a fair amount - you pay the rentals (AMD 10,000 per kid), then the instructor, then the ski lift (AMD 3,000 per person), then the tubes (AMD 3,500 for 30 mins) plus of course food and drinks. Staff everywhere is helpful. The on-site restaurant is actually quite good (but don't go for breakfast as they have no options). If you need to book a taxi you have to walk down to the bottom of the hill.

Excellent place for skiing, but now the snow is less due to climate. Need to climb 2nd or 3rd level for good snow.
Each level lift for one time charge is 3000 AMD.
The weather and staff are great for visitors.

Very beautiful place and the vibes are good .
The rope way ( cable car is beautiful) cost 3000 AMD per time or you can buy unlimited rides for 13000 AMD , the skiing is good and so much fun.
The restaurant is in the 2nd rope way so you have to buy 2 tickets for 2 different cable cars 🚠. The view is amazing from up there.

One of the best things about Armenia is that nature is so close to the main cities, especially the capital of Armenia- Yerevan.
Within an hour from Yerevan, it is possible to find yourself in the middle of gorges, mountains, forests, and lakes.
All of these places present opportunities to witness Armenia’s magical nature, history, and culture — feeling happy at Tsaghkadzor, Armenia.🇦🇲

Small resort... everything is falling apart, nothing special.there is a poor dog over there starving. Very expensive place for the facilities. We ordered 2 hotdogs and fed her. Please give her a bite if you notice her.

Last day of our tour. When we decided to ride the cable car suddenly it rain and we try to tell to the crew that can we delay our ride because it's raining at that time, he didn't listen to us and told us to go on the line and push us to go. We stuck up above and experience the hail storm, we are so wet at that time when we reach above. It's a bad experience to us but i will give 3 star for the beautiful place.

If you come here for sports, they dont rent gloves and goggles anymore just helmet and skis/snowboard. Great place, quite memorable and in January snow can get quite heavy but it's more full of ice so wear boots.

Beautiful church newly built and well crafted.
The art and handcraft in it is astonishing, definitely worth a visit if you are on the way, but do not expect for the visit to last long as it is not that big.

I loved the architecture and for me it worth to drive from Yerevan just to visit this church. But it might not be totally time and money efficient to drive 1 hour to this place just to visit this place as there is not much to see other than this place there

(Translated by Google) Stunningly beautiful temple. You can walk for a long time around the surrounding area and enjoy the results of the work of real masters. There are a lot of paintings inside, which are rarely found in Armenian churches. Beautiful stained glass windows. The temple is new, but it doesn’t seem like a remake at all.

(Translated by Google) St. John's Church is special for me with its sculptures, biblical figures and saints. It is built of red tuff and is quite a magnificent structure if we consider it purely as an architectural monument.
The inside is also gorgeous. Holy Liturgy is offered on Sundays in the morning.
