Amazing horse trek with Tania, Mike and Lea today. The horses were lovely and well suited to our families’ abilities. Tania and her team made us feel confident and well looked after. Thanks again for a great ride!

Great experience for our eleven year old granddaughter who after the forest trek wanted to do the beach trek and Tania and her team made her feel very welcome and they were very accomodating when she felt nervous on one horse so they changed the horse and she had a very positive experience.

I had a lovely sit down to taste the main set of whiskies and also tried the 30 year - old, one is more easily convinced for another taste after 4 whiskies. I was walking home :)
The lady who was conducting the tastings was a pleasant person to talk with, the tasting room also draws in many foreigners and i met some cool people there. The less potent Oamaruvian was my favourite. Especially with the home-made Christmas cake that was given to me. Must stop in Oamaru if you are a whisky lover.

Superb service, far beyond my expectations!
I asked a question in the website, they replied and called me next day with a solution, and I've just received my parcel right on time.
Thank you Laura and all the team for your great job👌

Finally found the whisky spot where I feel relaxed. Not in Scotland. Not in Ireland. That's New Zealand! And I have to say these drums are beautiful!

Friendly host, great atmosphere in the sampling room. My favourite is The Oamaruvian 16.
Irsan Tedja — Google review
Wife and I enjoyed the tastings. Very unique whiskey.
Mike M — Google review
Great spot for a dram. The only downside is its so limited the cost has climbed quite high. Not their fault! But I'd love it to be a bit more like the good ol days when I first was buying their whiskey.
Tim Newman — Google review
Lovely little whisky tasting bar in picturesque Omaru.
International travellers beware though, whiskey is considerably cheaper at the airport before you leave and there are no perks / discount for buying direct from the cellar door.
Go there for the tasting, but buy at the airport!!!

Beautiful place. Kids like here.
And super friendly staff! The lady at carousel is sooo kind and warm. She looks after everyone well to enjoy the carousel, lovely…

The BEST hands on , interactive museum we've been to in NZ. Superb. Our grandsons couldn't believe they were encouraged to play with items. A very cool place. Allow an hour ...and be generous with your chosen 'per head' fee on exit . The carousel was stunning (& the historic reel, fabulous).. We'll be back

There is so much to do, see, listen to or read about - at this place there’s something to enjoy for literally anyone!

Make this the first place to visit. A good history of the town and why it is what it is! Donations after you leave.

Great collection of classical buildings built here with local limestone now restored and forming the heart of Oamaru with interesting varied shops and eateries.

If you love Victorian era, as much as I do, you're gonna love this museum. The ladies behind the counter are soo kind and helpful. You can even pay lil extra and walk around in the costume! Definitely worth the money!

Love this place! The huge bicycles are so cool.
We had a wonderful time in it. All these old items are interesting and beautiful.

Better than the highly promoted steampunk exhibit. Staff were incredible, and we enjoyed visiting the Victorian past. Loved that we could touch things and even enjoyed a ride on a carousel. Visit it, you won't be disappointed ... and pay what you like at the end. How cool is that?

Super interesting glimpse into old New Zealand, filled with new life. One of the most impressive places during our stay. The entire downtown and harbor areas are beautiful

Cool little place. Activities for the kids are neat. Great way to learn about the area.
Tania McMillan — Google review
It's a small place that used to be a grain and seed storage room but you will fun have here if you enjoy seeing Victorian objects. It's an interactive museum so you can touch absolutely everything. They have a barber shop, a grocery shop, newspaper office, doctor's place, a carousel and the old train tracks so that you can imagine how the train got inside the place to refill it's wagons with seeds. For an extra, you can dress up in Victorian costumes and take some fun memory pics.

Visiting Oamaru? Start at this place first. The two staff members (two ladies) who were working on August 28 were super helpful and very welcoming. You can either pop in and get some local recommendations on what to see/do in the area and leave OR you can stay for the exhibits in the information centre itself. There is a short 10 min film on the history of the area playing on loop, Victorian games to play, lots of historical artifacts and penny farthing carousel behind the front counter which was a pleasant and fun surprise. Everything is by donation (you can pay cash or card). Thank you to the staff who helped our Oamaru vacation start off in the best way.

Such helpful staff at Oamaru iSite. They solved my problem (not enough data left on my phone) and we got safely to our accommodation destination which was a 30 minute drive out from Oamaru. I couldn't have done it without their face to face help. Thanks

Good place to know the local history.
But we could not go out because one of the staff pushing us to donate.

Closest thing brings you back to the Victorian era. Amazing structures, untouched by time. Architecture and design, a first hand experience of the past. And, much much more to offer.
Quinn Cueto — Google review
Fun to see but the real question is - why did this hugely prosperous Victorian port go downhill? Full marks to the local council for reinventing themselves. The stone built buildings (so rare in NZ due to earthquakes) are absolutely amazing and really worth seeing - banks, public buildings, art galleries etc. Shout out to the bookshop Slightly Foxed - nice poetry section and old fashioned ledgers, wrapping etc

Mate, if you've never been to Oamaru then this place will blow your mind. The architecture and "old" historic surroundings have time stamped this place to give it an authentic 1800s feel. So happy I stopped by. The train trip to the penguin colony was great too.

Interesting but, unlike similar quarters in other cities, has yet to be properly repurposed and to take off. Am sure that will do so in due course.

What a beautiful city, so different than your average coastal town. Architects went crazy with limestone back then. Even has an opera house. Now there are great bars, restaurants, a beautiful harbour, and of course quite some wildlife (penguins, fur seals...). Will have to come back to explore further.

Harbour Street, South Hill, Oamaru 9400, New Zealand
Niche museum housed in a grain elevator with multimedia sci-fi exhibits focused around steam power.
A great museum showcasing some truly incredible and out of this world thought processes of talented artists. For $10 for adult entry, you're not going to find much better value entertainment. Good engaging exhibits and stories about the artists.
Kenny W — Google review
This was lots of fun to do with the kids. We took a 3 year old, an 11 year old and two teenagers and they all had lots of fun. So many cool things to look at, but my favourite part was the ‘Portal!’ Beautiful and relaxing. This is a must see attraction if you’re in Oamaru. The best part about taking children here is the sign at the entrance that says you’re allowed to touch everything! Such a cool experience!
Lisa Alderton — Google review
Very interesting. Well worth the entry fee. I loved all the interactive pieces too. Some quality artwork in here and the industrial vibe was good fun. Good for kids and adults with an inner child that likes pretending to be in mad max.

Make sure you have lots of $2 coins to put in the big train outside, absolutely wonderful experience.
Steampunk HQ was the highlight of our trip to Omaru and the train outside was great, we even went back at night to see the flames and lights 🚥 go again.
Inside the exhibition was amazing, such eclectic workmanship, well done and worth a visit

Sandra Lee Lovering — Google review
Steampunk HQ initially caught my attention due to the numerous reviews praising its interactive installations, secret chambers, and cool atmosphere, sparking my imagination. However, my actual experience left much to be desired as I discovered several areas in need of improvement:
1.
The overall lighting was dim, requiring enhanced atmospheric illumination.
2.
The interactivity of the installations was lacking; despite the presence of many buttons, pressing them yielded no response.
3.
There was no clear delineation of which installations could be touched, with inconsistent signage, some handwritten, some printed, and some absent altogether.
4.
Safety concerns in the backyard need to be addressed; I suggest establishing a designated area for miscellaneous items to prevent harm to children.
5.
The lack of quality was evident, such as in the two installations in the yard with audiovisual effects; while the effects were impressive, exposed wires, abrupt endings to sound files, and a lack of clear instructions were disappointing.
6.
The presence of too many miscellaneous items detracted from the overall aesthetic, such as the clutter within the train carriage and poorly maintained handles, giving the impression that the venue lacked attention to detail.
7.
Overly obscure and excessively artistic installations may not be the best choice, considering the significant funds required for maintenance. If funds are insufficient to maintain such a large area of exhibits, it may be wise to reduce the scope and focus on refinement.
I strongly recommend taking inspiration from The Lost Gypsy Gallery in Papatowai, where although the number of exhibits is limited, each one demonstrates exceptional dedication and creativity, serving as a valuable example to emulate. Overall, Steampunk HQ falls short of being a recommended tourist destination in its current state.

I've never heard of the place until we visited Oamaru!
I was absolutely in love with this place! The workmanship and talent to make this happen is insane. I would definitely recommend to go visit. For $10 entry, I was shocked at what we got for that price! It was like a mini amusement exhibition. So so SO good!!
Emma Walker — Google review
Such a cool place, kids had heaps of fun with the interactiveness of the displays. Pricing was great for family outing.
Felt like more things should have functioned in the first half of the displays...maybe a few broken items?🤷♀️
Leisha Bell — Google review
Had went today at this place.i had explored many things but felt that somethings are unnecessarily placed and some things are not worth it.
Had been with my family and fees we paid i felt was overly charged with the experience will have.

We enjoyed our visit to the HQ, very interesting, there are lots to see, some are interactive. We spent over 2 hours there so we got our money's worth. Hubby spotted an old metal working machine from Otley Yorkshire 😁

The coin-operated "steampunk" railway engine outside the building is so cool. There is a gallery that presents a theme of a dark post-apocalyptic vision of a future and it cost $10 adults/$2 child to go in.

Bloody fantastic. The portal room alone is worth the entrance fee. It was quite quiet when I was there and I spent a happy 40 minutes tootling around the odd bizarro carefully curated exhibits. Really fun.

If you visit Oamaru, make this your 'must see'. Some very clever work. Take a slow meander through so as not to miss anything. Lots of interactive participation, nothing you can't touch. Have fun
Daphne Keller — Google review
What a wonderful place to visit. It's just so much fun to see and do. Exhibitions are interactive, and you get to touch and play with the equipment. Well, most of the equipment.
The imagination and work put in to repurpose old industrial items to steam punk sci-fi is fantastic. It's like living in BioShock rather than playing it.
If you want fun and escapism for an hour while travelling to Dunedin, then I can thoroughly recommend Steam Punk HQ in Oamaru.

Nice place . You can easily spend couple of hours . It’s all about metal crafts having all such things from bike to train and baloon.
Kids going to love this place they do have sovereigns as well even you can rent dresses for 10$.
Even entry fee is 10$.
Staff is nice and friendly.

Really cool stuff.
If you do not go in?
At least put a 2 dollar coin in the train ánd the zeppelin!
Camera's ready.
The outdoor activities?
With the canon and the train?
Great!!
The room with all the lights?

Quite impressed, there was a lot more sustenance to this museum than I thought. Plenty on hands on things for the kids.
With kids, easy to spend a couple hours here. As an adult, unless you are really into examining the finer details, a half hour would be plenty
Steve James — Google review
Amazing sights and wondrous items to look at. The best part? You are encouraged to take photos and so much of the pieces are interactive. So much fun!
Opened in 1876, this 34-acre garden features a marble fountain, a playground, an aviary & more.
A truely beautiful public garden. It was a relaxing way to spend a Saturday morning. Highly recommend. I also spotted a number of picnic tables in pockets of trees and flowers.

As not much people visits it in the late afternoon, it was perfect for a quiet stroll and photo-taking of the sceneries, gardens and Japanese bridge.

It was a delightful visit to the charming garden and aviary in Oamaru. The vibrant display of dahlias adds to the beauty, and a leisurely stroll along the creek enhances the experience. I highly recommend exploring this lovely garden during your visit to Oamaru.

One of the best gardens in New Zealand. As a landscape designer, I love how they designed the pathways and accessibilities to connect different parts of the garden from any entrance. Plenty of water tap throughout the garden so you definitely won't be dehydrated exploring here. There is only one toilet at the playground.

Was a bit 'abandoned' during winter.
But it is still worth going to see the aviary, the green house and the park in general.
There are a lot of ducks, the sign asks people not to feed the ducks with bread, but grain/seeds so the ducks don't get sick.
Line S — Google review
Not as good as I expect, maybe it’s because in the winter.
The bird areas are quite good, they are adorable.
There are some parking lots and toilets next to the garden which are so good.

Gardens on all their autumnal glory. Very pleasant to walk around. Has a lovely kids play park with a Humpty Dumpty wall.
The Alps to ocean bike trail goes through the gardens. Very nice atmosphere after a long ride.
Field of massive limestone boulders said to be 25 million years old, popular for walks & picnics.
Absolutely amazing rock formations!!
Easy access and close to the road.
Think site has been used in movies!
Great photo opportunities.

This is an amazing place with a lot of elephant looking rocks.
It is so fun to walk around and you can climb the rocks if wants. It is quite hard to get on to the rocks.
There is a donation box at the entrance you may donate some money and enter.
There is a large car park and parking won’t be an issue here.
It is not hard to find this place is it is located at the side of the road.

Emma Johnson — Google review
Very cool little spot with some pretty large rocks, arrived at 10am and there was no one there. Donation box to enter.
Jessie Nankivell — Google review
Amazing! This is a fantastic area full of easy and fascinating stops within just a few minutes of one another near Duntroon. Like Castle Hill west of Christchurch, Elephant Ricks has dozens of huge wind sculpted limestone formations that seemingly pop out of the surrounding land on their own. The area is not as big as Castle Hill, and it is quite manageable to walk the gentle downhill/uphill sloping path in just a few minutes. It’s just wonderful.
When we were there, almost no one else was, which added to the feeling that we had suddenly landed on some other very green, rocky planet.
A parking area accommodates a few cars. The site is on private land and is pastureland for lots of sheep. Please be respectful of the sheep, the owners, and the land.
We also visited the nearby Anatini Fossil site, Waipata/Earthquakes site, Brewery Hole geosite in Duntroon, and the Takiroa Māori Rock Art site. All were well worth it.
Marsha Russell — Google review
Perfect name for the area. So many differently shaped formations. Spent ages just wandering around taking lots of pics. Stunning views of countryside and snow capped mountains in the distance.
Picnic table up at the carpark and longdrop toilet hidden in an alcove of rocks at top of the rocks area.
If you love unusual rock formations, beautiful scenery, or both and want somewhere to go on a sunny day out, this is a must.
Only downside on day of visit: some who felt the need to talk/screech as loud as possible with little consideration of other groups wandering around trying to enjoy what the location had to offer.
wyldecreations — Google review
Just 1 minute walk to see Some interesting rocks on the green field. Just be careful the sheep poo on the grass. Donation is expected to entry.
Trucy Qin — Google review
Stopped here on a fine day and were not disappointed. The rocks are huge but you need to walk amongst them to appreciate their size rather than viewing from the top alone. Fantastic views of the countryside. There is a long drop toilet secreted between rocks in the far top left corner of the area which can be seen from the entrance point if you look carefully. Definitely worth walking around the rocks if you have time.
Matthew Smyth — Google review
I really enjoyed visiting this area. Key your imagination run wild and you can see all sorts of things e.g. a skull take some gold coins to put in the donation box as it's private land
Elaine Horn — Google review
Such a fun place to visit. It is fun to climb up on the rocks and see the views in the distance. Because it is within pasture there is lots of poo on the ground.
Andrew Larson — Google review
I didn’t see any resemblance to elephants in any of the rocks, but they’re cool to see anyway, as they’re huge, and a good place for bouldering as well, if you like climbing.
Marta Pérez Sánchez — Google review
This was an interesting place a bit like Castle Hill without the long walk. There were large rock formations in the field from long ago when the rocks were underwater. The site was used to film the chronicles of Narnia.

A small museum with a load of fossils of the ancient creatures vanished by the time.
The lady who was on the front desk was amazing. She helped us with information about the area and also explained about the fossils.
You can explore various fossils including sea creatures, birds, mammals sea shells. There is a microscope which you can use to study the texture of many objects.
Kids can have a lot of learning and fun by using the room provided to explore.
Eranga Dissanayaka — Google review
Mike was an amazing guide through their museum and shared some great tips about the surrounding area! We really appreciated his vast knowledge on the fossils and he presented it all in a fun and engaging way. Highly recommend this stop!
Alexandra Dukes — Google review
Wonderful place if you are interested in fossils or geology. Amazing to think that many of the exhibits were found within 50 kms of the museum. While many of the original bones are held at Otago University, the casts on display look very authentic.
Julie L — Google review
Totally worth a visit and an amazing stop that was totally unexpected.
The displays were informative, but the best thing was simply to speak to the passionate staff who were engaging, knowledgeable & friendly.
Amazing place to learn about the history and valuable finds many of which were found in the locality.
It boggles the mind to think about the geological history of the region!
Thank you.

Was expecting more. But it was ok. Thought it had more real fossils than plastic ones and I guess kids would love it. It was good to see something interesting in a town like Dunroon.

Been here a few times now, (I trained as a Geologist) and this is run by a group of lovely and passionate people who are super helpful. Met one lady there today and she remembered my son coming up on his recent field trip.
I'm pretty certain they're all volunteers and I would 100% recommend supporting them.
Steven J — Google review
It is sad that because is run by volunteers, the timings are not necessary accurate. We had driven a Little more than an hour. We knew that we wouldn't have much time to see but when we arrived the person in charge was closing. I asked him if it was possible for the kids to take a fast look around and he said that no body have come all day and he was ready to go go I told him that the time in the website said that it closes at 5pm and he said that he didn't give Care what it said. That he was ready to go home. So we couldn't see the place.
It's a great spot to explore. A 5 minute walk from the carpark. I can't think of a better place to get out to stretch your legs. Well presented information and the art itself was incredible for its age and detail.
Margot Lemm — Google review
Interesting historical site with some early drawings. Plenty of bird chatter from nesting all along the cliff. Good parking area. Will be good when fencing doesn't have to be there, perhaps replaced by perspex, but as rockfall happens not likely for a while. As we left a group had arrived & were being told about the history by a local.
Fiona Hood — Google review
This was a spontaneous stop, but unfortunately did not live up to the hype built up by the delightfully informative content boards. The paintings were underwhelming. Amazing to see what is still there, but so sad to see how disrespectful the public and tourists have been to the paintings over time. Take some time to read the information boards, they are interesting.

Great Place of recognition but too bad a lot of people took it upon themselves to tag the rock with their names. Couldn't really see a lot and some were removed for preservation.
Fences infront of drawings (rightfully so) and to make sure you're safe from any rock fell.
Quick stop on the drive

Certainly a good bit of history, information boards are very informative. Some amazing rock formations and photo opportunities, Lots of nesting birds in the rock face.

Steam boat was good. Got us close to the drawings which were interesting. Disappointing that the biggest one, which was the one you can see in great details, is a modern addition.

A mix of Maori rock art from the 19th century and earlier at a Maori trail shelter. Quite weathered and hard to see and sad that it has needed to be protected from vandalism.
Timothy Mora — Google review
Just a stop on the way to Mt Cook and it's super interesting to see the historic artwork. Bit disappointing at the first one to see so many people vandalised it and a couple of the others have been cut out and put into musuems
Natasha Smith — Google review
I was very excited to see Maori rock drawings, expecting to witness an important cultural heritage. In fact you see some rounded lines and simple patterns which are not older than 200 years, very primitive compared to the heritage of stone age cultures in Europe or Turkey. And according to the explanation boards yet no-one knows why this red colour was used. Caught between funny and weird.

We were on a road trip and heading towards Aomaru on highway 83 and spotted the Brown Tourist Attraction signs for Maori Rock Art. Took us awhile to turn around safely to visit this historical sight. The information regarding when and how these Rock paintings were created is interesting.
Annie Hackett — Google review
We were passing so stopped off in the decent car parking area. However the rock paintings are a little dissapointing. They are in the style of European neolithic cave art but actually painted around 700 years ago - max, some only in the last couple of hundred years. What hasn't been cut out of the rock, like a Banksy graffiti, and been taken to a museum, is not very clear either. But it's free and historical, for a country so young, so if your passing stop off but I wouldn't recommend it as a go to, go out of your way place.

Small trail with good big limestone rocks with historic drawings. The site is being restored or has arrangements in place to keep it from falling. It was a bit difficult to figure out the drawings, we could only see 1 clearly.
3 years ago today, me and my boyfriend were visiting this lovely vineyard. I remember we had wine tasting with lunch. We ordered a set of salmon and a duck, and the salmon was the best salmon we ever had in our life! Not to exaggerate, we still remember how amazing until today! Wish we can get another chance to visit again one day!

We, a party of three adults and two kids visited Tame Wallabies. Gwen the owner is passionate about caring for the wallabies. She gave clear instructions on what to do when feeding and interacting with the animals. There were 40 Wallabies in different paddocks. We spent more than an hour mostly feeding them. Our kids enjoyed feeding the animals and petting them. They are now asking for a pet Wallaby as they are cute and friendly :) There were also other animals such as peacocks, geese, ponies, sheep and chicken. Seeing the peacock so close was a bonus also. A good place for kids to appreciate Wallabies!

Get to hand feed wallabies, animals are well taken care of. Get to see other animals too but the stars here are the wallabies and its friendly, passionate owner, who took time to personally educate us with clear instructions on how to approach, feed and handle them. Learnt a lot here! No time pressure, take all the time you want to explore the paddocks. Read all the signs, follow the arrows and you're good. Feed is provided too. It's a rare experience, and a very memorable one. Very glad we made the stop here.

Enjoyed the close encounter with the Willoughbys. but didn't enjoy what felt like harsh comments towards my brother and nephew. Due to my brother's sore wrist he had trouble cupping his hands properly and my nephew who is 4 being very clingy, this was due to him being in a new environment and around new people. Not every child is going to be the same in a new situation. She began to get upset because my nephew was holding the bag of food, we were watching him the whole time and there were no issues till she made it into one. We both discussed it and decided we would not be taking him back until he's at least 8 or older enough to understand. Due to her lack of patients we feel it is not suitable experience to take young kids who are under 5 at least. Also felt sorry for one of the tourist who was constantly being told off for not drying her hands properly, which I felt was a bit rude.
Katherine Laws — Google review
A unique experience, getting up close to feed and pat the wallabies. We spent nearly 2 hours walking around the different paddocks. $15 per adult and $10 per child, which includes a bag of feed each and a pair of gumboots to use so you don't get your own shoes dirty.
Zavana Pudney — Google review
Amazing place, the owner is a wonderful lady and the wallabies are so unbelievably cute and friendly! They happily come to you for a treat, and hold your palms very gently while eating. You can read their names and few things about each of them on each gate. I absolutely love this place, totally didn't expect the little cuties to be so social!!
Teodora Motateanu — Google review
What a unique experience! Bring cash ($15/ea) if you don't have a NZ debit card since they don't accept credit cards or EFTPOS. There were so many wallabies! Some were hungry and hopped right up to us and others were shy or not hungry. The gate system and notes to get around the enclosures were a bit confusing but we made our way through. We spent a lot longer here than I thought we would, 1.5 hours or so. The owner was quirky and let us know everything we needed to know. She's quite the character and might rub some people the wrong way but just know she is wonderful and friendly! Once everything is explained, you walk through the enclosures on your own which was just wonderful.

We visited the Tame Wallabies reserve in Waimate lastweek and it was the best family thing we could do together in the South Island of NZ. We are originally from Auckland and were amazed how kind and friendly the Wallabies and that we could have an interaction with the wallabies, feed and pat them. You are taught the health and safety of washing your hands and putting on sterilized footwear before you step into the Wallabies area and just overall a surreal experience. 150% recommended place to visit with your family & so much value for your money. There is even a white parrot at the entrance that says I love you

The host here is amazing. She's so funny and really knowledgeable. She loves the wallabies and her passion shows in this. Happy healthy animals well cared for 🦘💕 Was a great experience and well worth the wee ticky tour to the area. Cheap to-do for families travelling thru town.

Absolutely loved visiting the Wallabies here. Super friendly owner, beautiful gardens surrounding the animal park and parking available onsite. Around about 20-25 wallabies to feed by hand and pet, including gorgeous babies. Perfect for families or animal loving adults. Not far off the beaten track if travelling through to Oamaru, definitely worth a stop. Highly recommend

The Wallaby-Sanctuary is absolutely amazing and a "must" if you are in the region. Had a great time feeding the wallabies. They are tame and you can easily pet them. The experience was great and I spent about 2 hours there.
Something about 30 wallabies wait for your visit :)
You will be alone with the wallabies and you will get shoes (as there is a bit poo in the grass 😄).
Since you have to walk on grass the santuary is not accessible with a wheelchair, but other than that it should be fine.

This place is so cool. Wallabies are the cutest, very easygoing and friendly. You are feeding them and walking thru the paddocks. The lady is very happy to see you and is very welcoming. She explains everything about wallabies. You can pay the entrance fee with credit card.

This was an unexpected highlight. Dedicated lady running the place, who is clearly very passionate about the wallabies. There are a number of sections with a few wallabies in each, you can feed them and give them a back scratch. Couple of peacock who were happy to eat from your hand also.

I lingered in the wallaby park for 3 hours and didn't want to leave at all. The wallabies here are very tame and less aggressive compared to their relatives, Kangaroos in Australia, but still wallabies have very sharp claws, so please abide by the owner's rules. Be gentle to these adorable and meek animals.
The owner of the wallaby park is a 76-year old lady who is super humourous and kind. She doesn't know how to use internet, so she asked us to deliver a message to all foreign visitors that her POS machine somehow doesn't accept foreign credit cards, so please prepare enough cash in NZD for admission fee unless you have credit cards issued by local banks.
Ocean — Google review
It was a really good experience. The owner is super friendly and tells you exactly how to behave with the animals. All the wallabies were friendly and tame and just wanted to have a snack out of your hands. Then just have to ask if they want a pat.
A real asset to Timaru. Great for mountain biking, walking, dogs, and picnics.

Famlan Farm Park
Sights & Landmarks
Farms
This animal farm run by its most amiable owner Richard is most educational and hands on. You get to come up close and interact with the animals if you so wish. Richard is on hand to explain whatever you need to know about the farm and the animals. It’s only a 2 hectare or 4 acre farm but you get so much out of it than a regular zoo or wild life park coz of the personalised attention from the owner himself. Visit is by appointment only (go to the website and apply a time and date) and costs very reasonable. But be sure to send a repeat message to Richard a day before arrival so that he can best prepare his animals to welcome you. Great for children and adults alike. 10/10 recommendation!
Eddie Goh — Google review
My husband and I had a fantastic time here! The owner Richard gave us a private tour of his whole farm and it lasted 1.5 hours. We loved that the animals were so well taken care of and that we even got to go into the enclosures to feed them. We also got the opportunity to give the calves milk and it was a ball of fun! Do give a call in advance to book a slot
Alexis Loh — Google review
The owner is so passionate and great with informing us about the animals, he was very friendly. The animals are all so nice and entertaining and love being fed! Great place to spend a couple hours and the price of entry is so good!!

Lovely hosts. Definitely a good place to stop by if you are in Timaru, especially if you have children. Animals are healthy and gentle to be around with. You can buy a big bucket of feed at $6. There were many different animals to see and get close too.
Owners were informative and friendly. We felt very welcome, great place to visit 😉

We had an incredible time at the farm. The owner took such care showing us all the animals and answering all of our questions. He was so easy to chat to and spend time with. We just set up our tour via Facebook. It was simple to find and schedule.
Kailee Caranta — Google review
As the sign suggested, the animals are very well take care of by Richard, who definitely knows what he’s doing & he’s doing a wonderful job while at it. Family ticket of 4 costs NZD25, where other places would charge an arm and a leg in the name & advantage of consumerism.
Edna Luah — Google review
I was very disappointed with our experience. The owner I presume was friendly and welcoming however the farmlet was not upto paying guest standard. The indoor area needed attention, looked dirty and tired. The rabbit and guinea pig enclosures were dirty and smelly, not cleaned before guests arrived. The feeding buckets were also dirty. The walkways were over grown and animal water dirty or low for a very hot day. Some of the sheep were lame and there feet needed treatment. I won't be going back nor will I be recommending anyone to visit.
Odette Perry — Google review
Our family had such a wonderful time, negative reviews definitely do not portray this place at all!
We really enjoyed entering the animals enclosures and getting up close and personal.
All the animals are very kid friendly (some are a little energetic) and they are very gental for farm animals.
The kids enjoyed patting, playing and feeding the animals and they're both 2yo.
The farm isn't massive but we were easily entertained for over 2 hours with the additional food purchased.
There is onsite toilets and kids toys aswell which I found to be super great!
The staff / owners were very friendly and helpful and I'd highly recommend going and seeing the animals for yourself.
Ethan McWilliams — Google review
Great place to visit. Owner is very informative of his animals. Able to roam around freely, but goat cage to be accompanied with owner. Animals are well tamed, fed and FAT!! Spend about 2 hours here.
$8 per adults, $5 bucket of food. 2 of us shared 1 bucket, more than enough.
Shinynova — Google review
This farm is just amazing! The owner Richard was super-friendly, fun and his information about all the animals was very interesting. Every animal has a name and a special character. We got to feed the peacock, the curious sheep, lambs, calfs, pigs, chickens, alpacas and mini-horses (not ponies ;-)). Richard has also guinea pigs and a rabbit. Every single animal was so heart-warming and Richard‘s tour was indeed way better than every zoo or sanctuary we‘ve ever seen before that we can warmly recommend this place to everybody who loves animals. Just make sure you‘re wearing shoes and clothes that can get a little dirty. :)

I enjoyed coming in here, it offers more exploration and wonder than many museums as it’s set up as almost a school activity/ investigation center. It has things they encourage you to touch, drawers you open, places to explore and little info boards that open up. Even has a creative coloring in section for if you have a young one who gets bored.

Quaint museum with very informative panels ; I particularly liked the coverage on the wildlife and introduced animals (like rabbits!) in New Zealand. Turns out the only little blue penguin I saw, was in this museum (albeit it is a taxidermied version 😅)
The museum does not charge an entry fee and has two floors. Great place to get acquainted on the various aspects of history (the early travellers, wildlife, etc).

Interesting books in the shop, rocks to touch, Maori and early settlers items, mounted animals and birds all tell the story of the inhabitants of the area. Tidy and well-lit, laid out in curves to draw the visitor onward. Plenty of visitors wandering through; children were enjoying a competition to find how many poppies were placed around the Museum

Visiting here is well worth it. Tells the history of the area, ship wrecks, port info and most importantly the people that made this area. Plus TOMATO SAUCE, Zoom I to the picture and find out how it started. Today, you are not a kiwi if you don't have tomato sauce (on a pie(
The staffs are very friendly and always have warm smile:) the information I got from here is very useful and helpful, I get to know better about Timaru.

Provides some context to the rock art we visited in Caves earlier. Not a well known aspect of Maori culture
Eileen Basher — Google review
Some interesting tidbits here and there. But a lot of what they offer is based upon assumptions or interpretations af Maori drawings. The lady that showed us through was very knowledgeable and I learnt more from listening to her than looking and reading the exhibits
Michael Lawton — Google review
A very interesting exhibit. We had seen this rock art in various places, but this explained all that is known about it. There was no tour available when we visited, but everything was well organized and clearly presented.
The attendant suggested we should plan to spent 45 minutes to an hour to see it. We were there for an hour and 45 minutes and didn't quite have a chance to view all the videos. I suggest the amount of time depends upon the interests of your group. Younger kids would have enough after a half hour. If you want time to read all the materials and view all the videos, you might allow 2 or 2 1/2 hours, or more.
I consider it worthwhile if you are interested in archeology, Maori History, etc.

Caroline Bay Association, an amusement park located in the South Island of New Zealand, is a beautiful and scenic spot that offers visitors a beach with stunning views, an aviary to explore birds, a playground for kids and various trails to hike. It's situated next to a rollerblade rink that serves as a parking lot and has nearby facilities. However, what makes it particularly special is its penguin nesting site at Caroline Bay beach where penguins migrate ashore every evening for nesting.
I visited Caroline Bay for the Rock n Hop festival. Which was brilliant. It should be noted that if you want to put your children into the fancy dress competition you have to register online the week before.
Anyway Caroline Bay is worth a visit any time with the new adventure playground, aviary, rose garden, fountain pond, then stairs up so that you can view the whole area. Timaru is a place that actually takes advantage of and uses the natural lay of the land to get the best views with amenities.

The Caroline Bay Carnival ran 26 Dec-7th January and this was my first time visiting. We drove down from Christchurch with a car club. The kids lived the rides, there were a heap of carinval activity/game booths that were really reasonably priced cimpared to other fairs/galas and a lot of food choices. We also visited the brand new play ground which was a huge hit with our 10 year old daughter. She loved the ninja course! We also went on the permanent train ride, a bargain at $2pp for 3 loops (although The eldest daughters sensitive ears didn't like the screetchy wheels on the corners) ice cream kiosk was next level amazing, the kids had a Copenhagen cone (2 scoops, whipped cream, sauce and sprinkles or you could have nuts) Next time would like to have longer to enjoy the entertainment stage which we didn't get to. We will be back next year!

Although this place was setting up early when visiting for the New Year for there yearly festivities its a great place, plenty parking & watching out to the beach. And big playground for children. Loved visiting. Weather let us down it was teaming down with rain, but it was a good visit.

Such a beautiful place. A kind lady, who'd pointed out a seal to me first, helped me to get there, while I was out in Timaru, in an attempt to lose myself in nature. She showed me the area of the beach where penguins come at night to have their little beach party. I could see tiny footprints which I hoped belonged to a penguin or two.
A path along the beach led to the cliffs, oh, those beautiful cliffs. A bridge above a railway track and a tiny unused lighthouse were the sights that greeted me there. I do wish the lighthouse was open for the public. It'd give an even greater perspective, I think.
A small path from the cliff led onto another cozy part of the bay. A wide selection of small to large round pebbles could be found there. Another bridge that extended into the sea gave an absolutely graceful view of the sea. The sea changed its colors from light blue to shades of green and dark blue. Altogether, it was a peaceful and beautiful day out there, in the midst of nature.
Hope to see some penguins next time!

Huge museum with many items of interest, from tractors to typewriters, from fencing wires to phones and medical equipment. Lovely old house belonging to a former local with items from the home.

If you have some spare time, this is worth a visit. Some interesting artifacts. The cafe is really worth it and you don't need to go into the museum to eat cake.

Lovely setting inside the cafe! Good coffee.
Good little stop break for the drive.

What a wee gem. Went here after seeing the queue at the bakery. Lovely staff and the best HOT coffee. Blue cod, chips and salad $20!! Highly recommend and will definitely be back.

Nice little place for a coffee and look at vintage wagon wheels. Scones yummy and you can purchase some organic products there to.

Fabulous atmosphere and delicious food. But gutted that it is closing soon due to earthquake issues. Such a shame.

I like the Cafe here. Good coffee & nice healthy food options. They made me a gluten free pancake as an alternative to their hot sandwich, it was delicious 😋, thank you. However, have not actually been through the museum so cannot comment on it.

Brilliant local museum. Motorcars, agricultural equipment, household artifacts and pioneers cottage to look around. There is a great coffee shop there as well; the owners of which are very welcoming.
David Trangmar — Google review
The local historical society have worked so hard here and created a very special museum and cafe. We thoroughly enjoyed 2 hours here. So much to see from the old railway station, old farm machinery, MacKenzie country community history through to 1970s Ford Cortina and Holdens. The cafe was so cosy with log burner and beautiful reasonably priced food n drinks. Thank you to Garry for his time and passion giving us the grand tour. Not to be missed.

Thus was an amazing Museum. We really enjoyed Garry showing us around and sharing his great knowledge of the great many artifacts at the museum. From farm machinery, vintage cars, the first jet boat and many more things, a real aladins cave.

Well. Despite there being a sign with the hours 9.30-5 and the contradictory hours online of 9.00-3.00 it was not open at either of those times. We arrived, waited, and called the numbers available. It was quite frustrating because I was with my two toddlers who were desperately eager to see everything.
I've given it 3 stars because we've been before and it was great. Obviously our second visit was Fairlie disappointing.
Nicole Down — Google review
Saw the signs for the museum when passing by and called in to have a look at the very well restored David Brown outside. Met Gary another gentleman and the lovely ladies who work in there and in the cafe too. I was very kindly offered to be shown around the museum and all the sheds with the collections in. It is an unbelievably brilliant collection of machinery from all periods of time that are all in perfect original condition or nicely restored to original spec. I would highly recommend visiting to anyone passing through. Can only say I wish I had had more time to look around. Will certainly come back if I ever have the chance.

Nice coffee and homemade breakfasts, highly recommend it. Great place to meet locals also.
Jill the owner is very friendly and knowledgeable about every single Alpaca & sheep they own. Peter the sheep and Sophie the Alpaca are my favorite. Very sad to hear this wonderful business is shutting down in March after 20 years due to Covid pandemic. Highly recommended for family with children as this is as close as you can get to be right next to Alpacas. The tour is worth every cents. Our children are so enjoy and can't stop talking about it in the car after the tour. Everything in the gift shop is on sale so make sure you swing by join the tour and grab you self a deal.

Amazing experience and very personal tour. Loved how we were surrounded by cute fluffy Alpacas! (And one gentle Llama)

Amazing, unique & educational experience with star guide Kath! ✨ Many alpacas, some llamas and sheep. Got to feed them and learn more about their routines, habits and personalities. Special love to Faye Faye, Chocolate, Teddy, Boots, and Axel 🦙🐑

Support these lovely people - they are so passionate about caring for the animals and it's worth it as you get to come right up close with the alpacas! Very knowledgeable, friendly and respectful people. They have been hit really hard with the pandemic so swing by after grabbing a pie in Farlie!

We had the best time! Great farm. Lots of alpacas and sheep here, and we had the chance to run around with them and feed them. The owner was very warm and welcoming and explained about the animals. I got spat on by an Alpaca, so I guess I had the "true farm experience".
alpha Baid — Google review
You have to visit here if you are near Fairlie!! We got up close and personal with the alpacas and llamas, feeding them and getting to see their amazing personalities! We were so lucky because there were heaps of babies as well. They are so cute and soft, it was such an unreal experience to interact with these magnificent animals. Also, the host Jill was so lovely and passionate and we learned so much about them. I will definitely come back and I highly recommend this tour!

I had such a fun experience at Gem Alpacas! My husband and I took our 4 year old and 2 year old, and they loved getting close to the animals. We learnt a lot about the nature of the breed as well as the farm itself. Alpacas and Llamas are really interesting animals! Would recommend to anyone who is passing through Burkes Pass/Lake Tekapo.

Really great place to stop and get some farming experience. The owners have got 48 alpacas and a few lamas along with sheep. If your kids like to feed animals - it is a must to destination. Thanks a lot for the farm tour!

An enriching and educational tour by our guide Robin! She introduced us to the alpaca, llamas, sheep, and rams on the farm and gave us the first-hand experience of feeding these gentle grazing animals at the paddocks.
Akmal Nazam — Google review
We didn't know that there are dedicated timeslots to visit the farm. We went at 11am but Trevor showed us around anyway! Do not be like us please. Stick to the dedicated timeslots.
Lucky us to be shown around, got crowded by the Alpacas and 2 Lamas. Also fed Trevor's sheeps Peter and No Name. Excellent visit for all ages, very educational. Thank you Trevor!
The Geraldine Vintage Car & Machinery Club Museum is a must-visit for vintage machinery and history enthusiasts. With over 2,000 vehicles on display, including 101 vintage tractors dating back to 1912, the museum offers a fascinating look at heritage farm equipment and even features a 1929 Spartan Biplane.
Amazing displays of vintage and classic cars, tractors, motorbikes, bicycles, toys, equipment etc etc. All maintained by enthusiastic and very knowledgeable locals, volunteers etc. Well worth a visit

Awesome place. There is so much history here. The volunteers are incredible and know what they’re talking about. There’s something here for everyone. From vintage cars and machinery to models and household stuff. So fun. Love seeing the 80’s mazda too! Just a nice reminder that time doesn’t stop and that vintage will one day be todays ‘modern’ cars..

The team from Bellbird Hearing visited the Museum and had a ride in some classic cars as part of our annual Family Fun Day. The guys were fantastic. The machines on display were truly impressive - the results a real labour of love. We’ll definitely be back. Highly recommended!

Amanda Burston — Google review
This is probably the best car museum I've ever been to, and I've been to a few.
Such an eclectic mix of cars from around the world, plus tractors (over 100) plus crawlers, static engines, a ship's engine (huge), chainsaws (!), models, and lots besides.
And the best thing - they ALL work and can be hired to take out on special occasions. It's a real living museum.
It's so worth a visit.

Full of character and Charm - this theatre is an asset to Geraldine.

The cafe, Mundell's Cafe, lacks a wide range of vegetarian options and appears to have a shortage of staff. This results in rushed service and a decline in quality. The latte served was not hot, but the baked potato was satisfactory. However, the prices for cafe items seemed too high compared to other places. On the positive side, the shift or souvenir shopping offered reasonably priced items. It received five stars for its helpful and friendly female staff.
Friday Night Japanese Menu. WOW!!!! What a delectable meal. A great way to end the week sharing a great variety of food with family....Awesome value for money!
David Bray — Google review
Had a simple meal of granola and yogurt which was very good. The service was excellent and especially so because two of the people working there helped me understand the intricacies of ordering coffee in NZ (I'm for the US). I then had an excellent coffee.
After the food came the gaming cafe where they have an advanced driving simulator. The person working that area explained, in detail, how the simulators work and my choices of tracks/cars (I chose F1/Red Bull). It was incredible!
Chris Chrisman — Google review
Not many vegetarian options. I got baked potato and latte. Seems shortage of staff. The staff member need to rush to attend customers so felt service is suffering. Latte was not hot. Baked potato was good. Felt bit overpriced on cafe items. For shift or souvenir shopping many of the stuffs are priced reasonable compared to other places.

New menu is great but it's a shame there's no options for kids except a bowl of chips, no fish and chips or anything only vegan nuggets.

Super friendly staff, a nice gift shop and attached to the visitor center. Along with a good cup of coffee you get a sense of the local community.
Forget paying $175 for the big observatory nearby, Peter and his equipment gives a much more personal and unique experience for seeing some of the world's darkest skies. Ask him about his discoveries and UFO sightings. He asks for a generous donation of about $25-50.
Benjamin — Google review
Extremely knowledgeable, smart and witty guy. Peter taught me a lot about astronomy, despite me having 4 years of tertiary astrophysics experience! We didn't get an opportunity to view through the telescopes much as the clouds were in the way but check the weather ahead and plan carefully.
Astro Entertainment — Google review
Very small groups, 8 people, that allows lot of time in the telescope, no rush and good knowledge from the host. The telescope is very modern and powerful. The rest if the 'facilities' could use a renovation. Is a very homey setup, tht makes it nice in a way.
elvira llabres — Google review
A great evening of stories scientific and personal, from a life devoted to following a passion for astronomy. Peter is a great teacher, with a northern english sense of humour (that’s a good thing!).
The session is 2-3 hours, with time for questions and answers, in a small group. Highly recommended.
Andrew Parkin — Google review
Peter is an amazing host and it shows how much passion he has for what he’s doing. He answered all of our questions and showed/ told us so much about our amazing universe.
Totally recommend going here!
Lara Heumann — Google review
What a great evening we had! Helped by a totally clear night we were fascinated and had our minds blown by the millions of stars we saw, planets in our solar system, Peter's insights and his incredible photography. Not only is this the best thing to do in Geraldine, but up there with our best experiences in New Zealand.
Simon Bromley — Google review
Unfortunately, we couldn't change the weather. Clouds blocked out view. Not a star visible in the sky. But Peter showed us around and we got to view videos and photos and learn how to take them ourselves. We stayed for two hours and learned heaps. Our 12 year old girls enjoyed it even though it wasn't hands on this time. Definitely ignited more interest. Well worth the visit.
Tracey Hastie — Google review
We got plenty of telescope observation time, and a lovely clear night... Save your Tekapo money and check out Peter and his Observatory, he's going to show you some fantastic highlights... and you can choose what you want to see, Cassini Divison, Great Red Spot, Globular Clusters, nebulae. What a treat!
Darcy Mandeno — Google review
Peter was so knowledgable and so helpful with questions! We had a great time and the kids now have some epic memories that will be with them for life! Getting to see Saturn's rings! Magic

A great walk through a New Zealands High Country Farm. So great to get back to nature. Wildlife to see, farm stock, alpine plants, views, and Musterers Huts to stay in. Great way to get away from it all.

The three day walk was a fantastic experience. Wonderful historic huts, lovely walking, and a unique way to experience a high country station. Open air bathtub at Sutherland's Hut was glorious. So nice to soak in a bubble bath just like the early shepherds must have.

This walk was a fabulous way to get away from the hurly burly of work! The tracks were well marked, the huts were wonderful - basic but with comfy beds and the total luxury of hot showers and flush loos! Also well written history on each place. The beautiful scenery and peace of the whole station makes this an amazing experience coupled with the friendly hosts, Jo and Steve, including the magical appearance of muffins, a flask and coffee and tea on one of the higher points of the track on a longer day.

We did this walk some time ago now and I have meant to write something ever since. We really enjoyed the walk, and the cabins were divine! So cute. The self service bar was a godsend as well. We both had a bath and watched the sunset. Would recommend this walk.

The place is beautiful. It has its own mini farm with pigs, chickens, alpacas, and donkey. There was a museum for old, antique stuffs which I thought was very interesting.
The shed sells all things woolen which are well made and reasonably priced. The staffs were friendly and helpful. Definitely suggesting a visit!

I just had the most outstanding customer service you could ask for from Jill. I needed two balls of wool of a older batch number than currently being sold. I just made my first purchase with the Tin Shed, and I am in love with my beautiful McDonald Ruffle Cape. When the colour I wanted wasn't in stock I had instant communication and support to help make a decision about my order, and the postage to Australia was super quick.
