It's quite an experience to wake up on a cruise ship in Milford Sound on New Year's morning. The natural beauty is breathtaking - craggy peaks, waterfalls, birds and the occasional dolphin. Breaksea Sound was also impressive with many small islands and narrow passes expertly navigated by the ship's captain and crew. It's wonderful that it is still an untouched National Park and it is a privilege to still be able to travel through it by ship - really the only way to appreciate its beauty.

Absolutely stunning National park. I’ve been to all the top parks in the US and this rivals them. Equally as stunning as the Yosemite valley. This is a must-see for anyone visiting the South Island.

I find New Zealand a beautiful country and even more so at the Fiordland National Park. I hope as many people can see and appreciate this beauty of the place without bringing too much 'progress' that humanity always seems to bring.

With its diverse array of flora and fauna, including endangered species like the kea parrot, it's a haven for wildlife enthusiasts as well. A visit to Fiordland National Park is a journey into the heart of nature's majesty.

A World Heritage Site, Fiordland National Park protects some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Glaciers sculpted this dramatic landscape, carving the famous fjords of Milford, Dusky, and Doubtful Sounds. Visitors here can explore gushing cascades, offshore islands, virgin rain forests, vast lakes, and craggy mountain peaks.
Not surprisingly, the park is a haven for hikers with some of the country's best hiking, including the famous Milford Track. Sea kayaking is a popular way to explore the fjords, and visitors can also enjoy a scenic flight over the park for a bird's-eye view of its staggering beauty.

One of the most beautiful drives in this park. As, marshes, forests and lakes this is Mother Nature at its finest in New Zealand.

So full of scenic views! The place feels like walking into a fairy tale. Watch out for the cheeky keas (and don’t feed them)

Spectacular place to see from the water - cruise ships are frequently coming through the Sounds. If you only see one, make sure that it is Milford Sound

This national park is just full of scenic views! If you plan to do the hikes, do go with some planning and preparations.
The routes are well marked and the government website is quite maintained and updated!
The drives are full of scenic places, viewpoints and valleys! Plus I found the birds are quite welcoming :)

The Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre is a recommended stop for tourists seeking information about the park. It is an ideal location for a break before driving to Milford Sounds. Visitors can enjoy a breathtaking walk along the lake, and marvel at the stunning views. The centre offers a tranquil and peaceful setting that attracts nature enthusiasts from all over the world. Additionally, it provides an excellent opportunity to admire the beautiful scenery while taking in some fresh air.
An absolutely stunning, tranquil and peaceful place to be. I hadn't been to Te Anau since I can't remember when and we loved it.

Great spot with helpful staff.
We did the Routeburn and the Kepler with a night's rest in-between. After getting our first walk booking confirmation stamped, a staff member asked us to come back between walks to get the stamp for the next walk. I thought it was a bit strange to ask us to return again just to get a stamp, so we asked to get it there and then and it was fine. No dramas.
No hut in New Zealand has ever asked to see a stamped booking from us, so it seems a bit silly that we'd have to revisit the DOC centre, especially when the old legs are aching. The addition of getting a stamped booking confirmation while carrying a print out of an online booking confirmation seems a bit silly, especially if you arrived in town after the visitor centre closes. I can imagine some people could get worried in that situation. Perhaps a stamp isn't required and we were told incorrect info from our bus driver - apologies if that's the case.
That said, DOC are amazing and set the global standard for conservation and tramping. What a great set up with amazing people. Thank you for the unforgettable experiences. We are very grateful.

Absolutely stunning National Park. The landscape is spectacular. Get onto some of the walking tracks or take a cruise on one of the fiords to see it at its best.

Great place for a break and stop over before the drive to Milford Sounds. Amazing walk along the lake and wonderful views.
Aman Ram — Google review
Staff were lovely and helpful, and provided good information about our upcoming walk on the Kepler. The facilities/building are starting to look a little run down and could do with a spruce up - cobwebs etc are covering the facade and the whole thing is looking a little tired. Understand resources are tight and expenditure needs to be prioritised, but it's noticeable the lack of upkeep there
Grant Daniels — Google review
I really enjoyed this visitor center, not sure I have many pictures but they have a good display of maps as well as species present in the area and other historical information displays including flora and fauna information.
Helpful staff, a 10 min walk to the nearby bird sanctuary though much easier to drive to the actual sanctuary parking lot down the road past the Lakeview holiday park if that's what your wanting to see. But if you have the time the walk over there is nice, but parking at the visitor center is up to an hour only so it's hard to enjoy the bird sanctuary if you park there.
Also loving the Merino wool thin toques with various national park names on them, super practical and light weight. I've only found them at DOC visitor centers for $27-32, I now have a small collection.

Very unfriendly and bizarre experience.
Went in just after quater to 12 today to get a clean gear licence. Alot of passive aggression about how they were 'about' to close for lunch at 1pm. If I did this in my job I'd be rightfully reprimanded. Frankly, if they were polite about it we would have been inclined to come back at 1pm.
Bit confused as to how they have so many staff yet absolutely have to close and have lunch altogether when in any other work place half the staff could cover the other....anyway.
Multiple people turned away rather rudely after we came in.
We were made to feel like a massive inconvenience and they didn't know where the paperwork was. If the place was more was more organised it would have been less than 5 minutes to get the licence. Except they bumbled around and complaining, so we were there longer than we needed to be in the first place.
Not the best first impression of the area and certainly the least friendly Vistor's Center we have been to.

Beautiful lake and full of summer vibes. Must visit Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre. It provides a lot of useful information before we trek and hike, including exactly where trees have fallen on a certain part of track or which trek is now closed. Merchandise is priced reasonably in the shopping gallery compared to shops in the town.

8th wonder of the world. Well many other places just as beautiful in NZ at least.
Long fantastic drive to get here.
Many many people - a bit too many.
It were very cloudy. Shame but is of course part of nature. Still worth it!

Rained... Still worth the trip! The waterfalls were everywhere en route to Milford Sound and the boat cruise there was spectacular even with the dodgy weather
Greg Whitaker — Google review
Beautiful scenery. Awesome on a sunny day. Spectacular in the rain. Probably the least amazing is a cloudy day with no rain. Recommend insect repellent- sandflys can be really irritating. Take a waterproof jacket for a surprise part of the cruise portion of the tour. Recommend Southern Discoveries.

Great experience, beautiful scenery. We took a scenic cruise with lunch picnic and visit to the underwater observatory. Nice choice of snacks, sandwiches and fruit, even cookies and chocolate. Observatory was educational. Interesting lectures by staff, would not have liked to miss that. Will sure be back with friends and family.

Do visit the tourist centre to find out more information before you go for the hike.
Nice walking pathway to the first shelter. Took me 1.45hrs one way, a lot of sandflies so be prepared. Our target was to reach the first shelter and return after that.

Best stops along Oamaru to Milford Sound drive
The top stops along the way from Oamaru to Milford Sound (with short detours) are Milford Sound / Piopiotahi, Dunedin Railways, and Te Anau Glowworm Caves - RealNZ. Other popular stops include Otago Peninsula, Moeraki Boulders Beach, and Glenorchy-Queenstown Road.
Moeraki Boulders Beach is a stunning destination located in the southern part of New Zealand. The beach boasts an incredible array of spherical boulders that resemble those from prehistoric times when dinosaurs roamed the earth. These mammoth rocks are incredibly heavy, weighing around two tonnes each! The best time to view these wonders is during low tide, allowing for unparalleled views of this picturesque landscape.
On a tour of the South Island, we ran across a sign for the Moeraki Boulders Beach. I had recognized the name from a postcard I had spotted in a shop in Dunedin. Not knowing what to expect, we pulled in for a look. The beach was incredible, and the spherical rock formations look like artifacts from another planet! The beach is spacious and teeming with wildlife. Not too crowded with people, although we visited in winter and summer crowds might be thicker.
There's a small restaurant on the bluff above the beach. A boardwalk and stairs take you down from the restaurant to the beach itself. Moeraki Boulders Beach is pretty incredible; you'd be hard-pressed to find anything else like it in your world travels.
Jack Sweeney — Google review
The most extraordinary beach with large spherical boulders along the beach!
Moeraki Boulders Beach is a must-visit and there is ample parking space for visitors. The beach is just walking distance down the stairs from the car park and there is a restaurant near the entrance of the beach.
This beach is a perfect place for a photo shoot and it was interesting to see the different sizes of boulders lying around the beach. A beautiful place in New Zealand!

Special rocks and beautiful on cloudy or sunny days, nice place to walk the dogs and children, a lot of parking lots.
Juanita Huang — Google review
Crowded, but free and pretty interesting to see. The spherical rocks seem to be lower in the sand than some older pictures. You can see one coming out of the hillside. It's a short walk and the beach sand is firm to walk on.
Trypp Adams — Google review
A different beach with some wierd looking round stones which i found amusing. TBH,I was expecting to see a lot after reading about it and felt a bit disappointed as these rocks are few and don't span a major portion of the beach. Main reason for my 3 stars is the lack of any public bathrooms in the area.
Just need to be a bit careful on the rocks as its slippery😉
I would still recommend this cos its unique.
Abin Moses — Google review
The boulders looked more like regular rocks and we would have not have noticed them if it was not hyped up. That said, managed to see one of the untouched fully round boulders still in a cliff and only then did we appreciate it for what it was. Parking is free if you park at the public park(a slightly longer walk) as opposed to the cafe where there is fee charged as it is privately owned.
Bryan — Google review
Not a bad place to stop while driving past. It’s better to park at the cafe as it’s closer and has a toilet available if you buy something. Your GPS might take you to the beach parking but you’ll see a large sign for the cafe, that’s a better place to park. The rocks are quite interesting
Mark Greene — Google review
Amazing place to visit if, like me, you're a geologist by background and therefore they are one of the unique geological features you need to see before you die! To others they are probably just rocks on a beach. Best time to visit is not after storms as they can half bury the boulders but they are still awesome.
Park in the public carpark to the right (next to the red building) as that's free. It's a five minute stroll along the beach from there. Otherwise the cafe to the left will let you park there but then charge you to take a shortcut to the beach down their steps!
Adrian Walter — Google review
Always a great inexpensive place to visit with friends and family. Enjoy something tasty off the menu before you walk it off with a stroll to see the boulders. You need a low tide to see the boulders and the amount of Boulders visible depends on whether the tide has covered or uncovered them. Gift shop available and you can buy food to feed the deer and alpacas.
Sandyxo07 — Google review
Fun place to visit - large spherical boulders too see, and on a nice sandy beach. There are usually quite a few people there, but it's easy enough to get a picture or two. It's only a very short walk down to the boulders from the cafe, or about a 20 minute walk along the beach from Moeraki Reserve at the north end of Moeraki township.

Moeraki is famous for its boulders. These mysteriously spherical stones scattered across a beach. Each boulder weighs several tonnes and is up to two metres high. Scientists explain the boulders as calcite concretions formed about 65 million years ago. The boulders give the beach a terrific sight!

If you travelled a bit around the world and saw different landscapes and some natural highlights, there are not many reasons to stop here. A handful round stones laying on a long endless beach.

The Moeraki Boulders are a group of large spherical “stones” on Koekohe Beach. These boulders are actually calcite concretions that have been exposed through shoreline erosion from coastal cliffs.
They originally started forming in ancient sea floor sediments around 60 million years ago, and the largest boulders are estimated to have taken about 4 million years to get to their current size. Each boulder weighs several tonnes and is up to two metres high.
Even today, there are still boulders remaining in the mudstone that will, eventually, fall on to the beach as they come lose due to erosion.
According to Maori legend, the boulders are gourds washed ashore from the great voyaging canoe Araiteuru when it was wrecked upon landfall in New Zealand hundreds of years ago.

Sad that some people deface them writing their names on them. Saw some dolphins nearby, it was a nice bonus.

This was our first stop between Dunedin and Lake Tekapo, a short distance off Hwy 1. These round boulders buried in the sand come from calcification of dinosaur mud. Some are nearly perfect round. Others look like petrified tortoise shells with hexagonal patterns of yellower rock. Very interesting walk down the a short beach to see dozens of them. A few stairs to reach the beach, but nothing strenuous.

The Royal Albatross Centre is a wildlife sanctuary located on the mainland of New Zealand that offers visitors an observatory, exhibits, and guided tours of the colony of royal albatrosses. The centre also provides hand-rearing opportunities for chicks or learning about conservation efforts to protect this endangered species.
Lovely to see the birds soar across the ocean.
And the visitor center has an amazing array of information. Interactive fun things. You can also walk down to see the penguin burrows during the day and then take a tour at night once they wake up

Enjoyed the 90-minute tour at the Royal Albatross Centre, which included a visit to the fort. The tour proved to be an intriguing journey, thanks to our knowledgeable guide who added depth to the experience.
As it was early in the season, the Albatross count was a bit limited, with only three making an appearance.
Seppe Neyens — Google review
This is the only place in the Southern Hemisphere that you can see the Northern Royal Albatross nests up close. There's a sign at the entrance to the Centre indicating how many nests are visible on that day so make sure you check the sign. The tour (booked in advance) was very informative and it was a steep but manageable walk up to the observatory to see the nests. Binoculars and raincoats are provided. You spend about 20 minutes in the observatory and the tour guide helps to spot the nests with you. There is a souvenir shop and a cafe. Highly recommend visiting, just be warned that the drive to get there can be quite challenging with many speed limit changes and winding roads.

My friend and I visited the Royal Albatross Centre while we were in Dunedin. I had visited over a decade ago as a kid so I wanted to come back again as an adult.
I had a banana milkshake at the café and it was great value for money. The staff were happy to swap in soy milk so I didn't have to have as much Lacteez to enjoy it.
We chose to do the express tours they were running because of the school holidays, and even though it was intended for the school holidays, we still felt like it was plenty of time. It was really reasonably priced too.
The tour guide was knowledgeable and approachable, and she didn't hurry us around the viewing deck.
We were lucky enough to see four albatross chicks and even saw an adult albatross in flight. The viewing deck had plenty of space for a decent sized group, and plenty of binoculars for getting a good close-up on the chicks.
The centre also had a fantastic gift shop. I was very glad to see plenty of Happy Hens available for purchase.

Love the view of the light house and the small gallery has so lots of history and information to read. I booked for an albatross tour but it was drizzling and too windy and cold, I have decided to cancel and refund. Til we return to Dunedin again, will surely take the tour on a good weather.

Really nice place to visit, very friendly and helpful staff. Depending on the time of year changes how active the birds are. We actually saw albatross flying around from the public viewing area rather than up at the viewing platform, so if you want to save on the tour maybe hang around down there. Bunker was pretty cool to see the only functional disappearing gun in the country.

The little penguin tour was great.
The guides gave a brilliant introductory talk and then we were led down to the beach.
We saw loads of little penguins, maybe around 50 or so in total.
They were easy to see from the viewing platform.
Doing the dusk tour to see the penguins was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Dunedin.

This is the place to view the albatross, if u are lucky. There are many birds outside. Nice to Take a stroll outside to the end of the "cliff". it is not that far.
There is a small gift shop and a cafe inside. U can buy some souvenirs. Pilot beach is just down, around the corner.
Car Park is plenty right outside the center.

Dunno, pretty expensive tour cost. Only four nesting birds at the this time.
Car park full of seagulls and poo.
Lots of thistle.
Great outlook and place to go otherwise.
Bit of a tourist trap to be honest.
It’s not the birds fault or anything - just a bit average
Wish it was a bit more accessible.

Well worth the money. I highly recommend going for the 90 minute tour which includes the fort exploration. Time went by with quickly. April is a great time to visit because the babies are so cute and fluffy plus you get to see majestic big Albatross flying too. The gift shop has excellent penguin and Albatross items .Staff were friendly. It gets windy so bring a coat ,hat and maybe scarf. The drive from the cbd takes 40 minutes but there's often roadworks or bad weather so allow one hour to get there. If you arrive early no worries there's so much to see in the visitor center plus a cafe.I recommend as well get a Peninsula trust membership as you get free entry with a friend or 40% if going alone plus 20% off a gift shop 😀. Looking forward to coming back to watch the chick's development

Went on the blue penguin tour early September. It's only available in the evening. Its a bit of a drive from Dunedin. The road can get very windy. Arrived early so we checked out the gift shop until the tour started. The gift shop was closed when the tour ended, so best buy any gifts before the tour starts.
There was a short and very informative presentation from the guides to kick off the tour. the group was then escorted down to the beach. Quite a few stairs to go down. It was dark but the path was well lit. It was also cold and very windy so warm clothing is a must. We all waited on a deck for the penguins to come out.
We didn't have to wait long until groups of penguins started coming out of the Ocean and up the beach. They were very vocal and didn't seem to mind the large group of people near them. Quite a few came up to deck and you're able to get a good look at them.
We were treated to a free bikkie while watching.
The guides were great and passionate about their work.
It was an amazing experience. Worth it.

I went to the Royal Albatross Centre for the night tour to see the Blue Penguins and had an incredible time. The staff was very knowledgeable about the penguins and the conservation area. It was a very memorable experience!

Quite a lot ($50) to see a few albatross sitting at quite a distance - but would still recommend. Good to support the conservation effort and it's the only place to see them. The guide was very knowledgeable and happy to answer all of our questions.

Beautiful place, doing great work on albatross conservation. Brilliant guided tour and walk up to the albatross observatory with views down to the nesting chick's.

GO HERE!!! this was one of the best experiences and tours we did in New Zealand. The guide was wonderful and answered every question we had. We then saw about 15 albatross. It helped that there were multiple nests (the right season), but overall it was wonderful.

Jessica was absolutely brilliant! It is so fun to listen and learn from someone who passionate and connected to the land. Anyone enjoyed listening to her. Unfortunately there was not a lot of pairs to see and we all waited for them to take off so we can see their magnificent wings but that nature. If you can’t decide between this or the penguins definitely go for the penguins!

Royal Albatross Centre hosted our Blue Penguin Tour and the photos show the elegance of these creatures in flight.
Your visit here supports the needs of Albatross 🪽 and Penguin🐧(blue Penguin in disguise).

Fantastic conservation area with Albatross and Penguins. We didn't have time to do the tour but we spotted lots alof Albatross from the viewing platform not to far from the car park. Highly recommended the scenic drive to get to the Royal Albatross Centre.

Albatross are the world's largest seabirds. They generally breed on remote offshore islands and spend at least 85% of their lives at sea, but, at Dunedin's Taiaroa Head, on the mainland, you can see a Royal Albatross breeding colony. An in credible and educational experience.
We also had lunch at the center's Cafe, it was delicious!

The Otago Peninsula boasts a magnificent landscape, with breathtaking views of both the waterfront and the mountains. Visitors can admire a diverse range of wildlife, including penguins and sea lions, in their natural habitat without the confinement of cages or gates. The area is easily accessible and provides ample opportunities for exploring, such as visiting New Zealand's only castle or taking a leisurely drive to soak in the stunning scenery.
On a good sunny day, a beautiful scenic drive to Portabello township or further.
Respect the locals and support the local businesses.
Neil Taimalie — Google review
There are multiple places on the roadway to sit and view the amazing place. People also love running through the edge of the road and the view is extraordinary on the sunset
Md Ahsanul Kabir — Google review
If you get the chance to come for a drive then you must do so.
The views are incredible and well worth the afternoon (or even full day) you will spend driving, walking looking & photographing.
True New Zealand.
Andrew Gosbell — Google review
I happened to be there early winter . Stayed at Airbnb with one of the house along the coast, if you can call it coast . The sight is so lovely . Walk a little further up and you will see the sea lions without gates and cages . Lovely place . Easy to get around to the only castle in New Zealand or back to town on main land
JO Sze — Google review
The peninsula is a drive out of the city. Once you hit Portabello road you can follow it around the peninsula. There is plenty of things to look at or to do. Larnach Castle is located nearby which gives beautiful views of the peninsula when not cloudy. There is also the penguin and albatross centers. located deep in the peninsula. Portabello seems to be the biggest town in the area with cafes, restaurants, and hotels.
There are quite a few walking trails as well. We went down to Sandfly bay which wasn't too difficult and had quite a few seals basking on the beach.
It might be a good idea to have some sort of a plan to save driving along the same stretch of scenic coast. The upper roads are also quite scenic.

A very beautiful and quiet place in Dunedin. The drive from Dunedin is breathtaking and you already enjoy a lot of scenic views before reaching this place. The road is not paved at the end so it is wise to take a 4x4 ride but still a sedan has no issue. There is no shop or drinking water so you should have drinking water and snacks with you. You are literally at the end of the world here as there is nothing in front of you but Antarctica very far away. I would say it is a must visit place if you are in Dunedin.

Nice drive for the views. Unfortunately due to bollards erected all the way to the end there is absolutely nowhere to stop along the way. Lighthouse at end cannot be accessed as it’s in conservation area. Really disappointing drive..

After the clay cliffs of Omarama this was another geological surprise well worthy of a visit. Easy access and close to the car park. Great views with the alps in the background.

This is an amazing place with a lot of elephant looking rocks.
It is so fun to walk around and you can climb the rocks if wants. It is quite hard to get on to the rocks.
There is a donation box at the entrance you may donate some money and enter.
There is a large car park and parking won’t be an issue here.
It is not hard to find this place is it is located at the side of the road.
Eranga Dissanayaka — Google review
We enjoyed the place, but the rocks are actually bigger than what it shows on the pictures.
It's an interesting thing to go and see if you do have time and a good camera I suppose 😁

Cool rocks in a grass landscape, was real quiet and silent when we got there. Nice to wander around and take a look, short walk from the parking place.

Elephant Rocks is an amazing outer worldly place to see. It is on private land, but open to the public. It sometimes has sheep roaming around and there is a little toilet sitting in the rocks.

Fantastic walk. Big rocks. Big climb. Very good. Elephant rock looks like a skull from different angles . It's also very easy walk so children can take it easily .

Very cool little spot with some pretty large rocks, arrived at 10am and there was no one there. Donation box to enter.
Jessie Nankivell — Google review
Amazing! This is a fantastic area full of easy and fascinating stops within just a few minutes of one another near Duntroon. Like Castle Hill west of Christchurch, Elephant Ricks has dozens of huge wind sculpted limestone formations that seemingly pop out of the surrounding land on their own. The area is not as big as Castle Hill, and it is quite manageable to walk the gentle downhill/uphill sloping path in just a few minutes. It’s just wonderful.
When we were there, almost no one else was, which added to the feeling that we had suddenly landed on some other very green, rocky planet.
A parking area accommodates a few cars. The site is on private land and is pastureland for lots of sheep. Please be respectful of the sheep, the owners, and the land.
We also visited the nearby Anatini Fossil site, Waipata/Earthquakes site, Brewery Hole geosite in Duntroon, and the Takiroa Māori Rock Art site. All were well worth it.
Marsha Russell — Google review
Perfect name for the area. So many differently shaped formations. Spent ages just wandering around taking lots of pics. Stunning views of countryside and snow capped mountains in the distance.
Picnic table up at the carpark and longdrop toilet hidden in an alcove of rocks at top of the rocks area.
If you love unusual rock formations, beautiful scenery, or both and want somewhere to go on a sunny day out, this is a must.
Only downside on day of visit: some who felt the need to talk/screech as loud as possible with little consideration of other groups wandering around trying to enjoy what the location had to offer.
wyldecreations — Google review
Just 1 minute walk to see Some interesting rocks on the green field. Just be careful the sheep poo on the grass. Donation is expected to entry.
Trucy Qin — Google review
Stopped here on a fine day and were not disappointed. The rocks are huge but you need to walk amongst them to appreciate their size rather than viewing from the top alone. Fantastic views of the countryside. There is a long drop toilet secreted between rocks in the far top left corner of the area which can be seen from the entrance point if you look carefully. Definitely worth walking around the rocks if you have time.
Matthew Smyth — Google review
I really enjoyed visiting this area. Key your imagination run wild and you can see all sorts of things e.g. a skull take some gold coins to put in the donation box as it's private land
Elaine Horn — Google review
Such a fun place to visit. It is fun to climb up on the rocks and see the views in the distance. Because it is within pasture there is lots of poo on the ground.
Andrew Larson — Google review
I didn’t see any resemblance to elephants in any of the rocks, but they’re cool to see anyway, as they’re huge, and a good place for bouldering as well, if you like climbing.
Marta Pérez Sánchez — Google review
This was an interesting place a bit like Castle Hill without the long walk. There were large rock formations in the field from long ago when the rocks were underwater. The site was used to film the chronicles of Narnia.

Dunedin's Taieri Gorge Railway is a world-renowned railway that travels through the dramatic landscape of Otago. The trip offers magnificent views of the countryside as well as fun stops at scenic locations.
This really is a lovely city, we were fortunate the weather was perfect, beautiful warm day and we really saw the railway station and surrounding areas at its best.
This is named the " Most Beautiful Railway Station" in the world and it would be hard to disagree.
It's a treasure.
Definitely has to be on the " must see" list when visiting Dunedin.
Highly recommended.

Such a great old building. It is a lovely example of when they put the time and craftsmanship into constructing public buildings. The combination of "subway tile", wooden molding, and tile flooring is stunning. Take your time and enjoy the history.

Build in the beginning of last century, restored building that very well taken care of as well as landscaping surrounding it.
It is a must to be seen sight in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Frame of sport and Art museum inside of it. But too impressive.
But impressive from outside, you can even see old train with conductor, who by the way was not too friendly.
Flowers and landscape was just perfect!
Recommend if visiting Dunedin.

This is a very nice and old train station. The overall vibe is very historic and it does have historical importance too.
The station building is well maintained and open for visitors. Dunedin railway tours start from this place.
We couldn't experience that due to time constraints, but it is a highly recommended activity if one has got time.
The surrounding areas are scenic and clean. There is an art gallery inside the train station building which is worth a visit too.
The gardens outside the premises are nicely maintained and attract a lot of tourists.
A must visit place while one is in the city.

We did the seasider train to Arc brewery, it is a beautiful train trip. The kids enjoyed the train ride, and it was nice to see the coast line from a different view. The train was clean, tidy and comfortable. Purchasing food/drink on board was quite expensive but that would be my only down side. Everything else was very enjoyable. .

It was an great experience on the Victorian trip... a bit too short stay in Omaru though. We hardly had time to walk around, take photos and have a meal in the rush.
I would go again if the time there would be longer so we don't feel like rushing through everything.
We enjoyed the spectacular views that can only be seen from the train.

Leaving from the amazing Dunedin Station, I had the chance to ride both The Inlander (morning) and The Seasider (afternoon) as they were both running on the same day. It’s a great way to enjoy some of Dunedin’s beautiful natural landscapes not easily accessible otherwise.
The Inlander includes a stop at Hinton where passengers can hop off and stretch their legs while the locomotive was re-orientated for the return trip. For The Seasider, it stops at a certain point during the journey before the locomotive is re-set for the journey back to Dunedin.
Refreshments are available on board both services. Darryl, our guide on both trips, provided commentary sharing points of interest along each journey. He, along with the rest of the crew, were friendly and available for assistance at boarding and throughout the journey.
I enjoyed both trips. However, if I had to choose one, I would recommend The Seasider as I found travelling along the coastline was more picturesque.
Even if you don't plan on taking a trip, consider visiting Dunedin Station which is a beautiful historical building. The exterior was being renovated when I was there. However, the interior was open and worth having a look around.

A must visit while passing Dunedin. It is a symbol of colonial style buildings and free for anyone. We visited there on a Tuesday evening and gates were closed by 7.30pm. The railway building is historic and there is an art gallery upstairs. He front yard is full of flowers during summer. So not forget to take a photo on the platform with Dunedin name board on background.
The Toitu Otago Settlers Museum is a museum that tells the history of the local settlement in Otago, including exhibits related to the gold rush period. There are also kid-friendly exhibits and events available at the museum. The cafe on site is a great way to relax after exploring the museum.
Excellent free museum, a must do while in Dunedin. There are so many exhibitions about the history of Dunedin, how and why people came, early settlers, technology and the gold rush, and modern cars, home appliances, music and culture. It is very interesting and there is a lot to see. But everything is quite vague and nothing goes into a lot of detail. It left me wanting more! You can easily spend hours in there. Lots of toilets too as well as a cafe and nice gift shop.

Quite fantastic insights into the history of New Zealand. Arranged in different areas, such as military, vehicles, immigrants, vehicles, technology and so on...
It is great that not only very old things are shown but like a timeline the development from then to the recent past.
Very friendly and helpful staff.
I would write, it is worth the entrance fee in any case, but it is amazingly even free.
Should not actually be missing on the program if you are in the area.

We are definitely coming back. 5 stars 🖐️

During our Port Chalmers stop, we hopped on a shuttle to reach Dunedin. The museum in the vicinity captivated our interest, prompting us to delve into its offerings. Upon entering, the welcoming museum staff provided guidance on how to commence our exploration.
The museum is thoughtfully organized, featuring distinct sections that showcase a diverse array of artifacts from the past. This meticulous arrangement allowed us to embark on a journey through different historical periods, providing a comprehensive and enriching experience.

Great collections of historical value. Staff are very pleasant. Great stop for visitors as you can leave your bags at the reception. 45 minutes may be enough to look around the museum. They also have a nice Cafe and gift shop by the entrance. If you are done enjoying the arts and history here, this museum is literally beside the Railway on one side and the Chinese Gardens on the other.

So much local history packed in one place!
We visited on Anzac day. And place was fairly quiet with great atmosphere. Give it plenty of time, we stayed 3 hrs.
One can try on a wedding dress or buy an old penny for use of polyphon inside the exhibit. Climb aboard of a 100year old tram cart.
Fun for both adults and kids with a coffee shop and plenty of souvenirs, goods or related books to buy.
Place is wheel chair accesible and has toilets in front and in the exhibit area as well.

A really good museum, feels like being brought back to the 19th and 20th century!
Plenty of displays and interactive information.
Parking next to the museum is $2/h.
There is a free parking behind the train station, 400m walk to the museum through the bridge.

Fascinating museum documenting the peoples and cultures which have played a role in the development of the Otago region, with an emphasis on Dunedin, to what it is today. Plenty of interesting exhibits and information panels bring the history and people’s stories to life for visitors. Easily spend a couple of hours here taking full advantage of the interactive displays. Well worth a visit if you are passing through Dunedin.

Theo and the team are fantastic. We used their Auditorium space for a conference this past weekend. Theo was easy to chat with about any issues we had and all the staff were really friendly and helpful. We walked past this building, and another couple told us it was really good, so we went back the following day.
The name is off-putting, with connotations of colonialism, but they have made quite an effort to recognise all New Zealand's people, the common heritage and shared history - often by intermarriage between the groups.
There is a lot to take in here, and as a Scot a lot of the history is one of Scottish Presbyterianism, that I find it easy to recognise.
Above all, there were some very good snippets of personal stories, that helped to humanise the story of Dunedin. There is a power in hearing someone tell their story from the past.
One that appealed to me was of the town planner. It had been agreed that Dunedin would have gas lighting and the town was responsible for providing the lights. They put them out to tender, but he wasn't happy with any of the offers, so decided to design his own. I see that as a very Scottish response: "I can do better than this myself."
One interesting thing is how prosperous they were, particularly around the time of the gold rush, they really were pioneers.
That's only a very brief introduction to the breadth of the museum. Allow 2-3 hours at least, if you like to browse and read the information, as we do, rather than just rushing through.

The Olveston Historic Home is a beautifully preserved former merchant home dating to the early 1900s. It offers guided tours of the house and its art collection, which includes items from Japan, England, and China. The museum is well worth a visit for anyone interested in history or art.
Gorgeous home and garden left to the people of Dunedin.
You have to book a “tour” and unfortunately we felt our guide rushed us through
(We were only a small group of 3 and didn’t have all the answers we were looking for or else wouldn’t answer our questions about the history of the people of house until we were in the correct room). It was a little scripted but worth the trip. A lot of the house was off limits ie tutors room, top floor and bottom floor/basement area.
They need a brochure or leaflet with some history of the house, owners, furnishings and a map of the building and gardens.

A very interesting home of a Dunedin wealthy businessman in the early twentieth century!
The home is currently a historic house museum and it was an enjoyable experience to explore this home. The tour is according to schedule and there was nobody else apart from us joining the last tour of the day. Even so, our tour guide shows utmost professionalism and still brings us around the lovely home.
The tour would not have been interesting without detailed explanations from our guide. We truly appreciate his friendliness, sincerity and passion as Olveston Historic Home guide!

Olverston Historic House in Dunedin is a very interesting attraction to visit. Built in 1906 it still contains most or the original furnishings, so it provides a brilliant snapshot of what home life looked like in Dunedin more than 100 years ago. The tour guide was excellent and full of interesting knowledge. This is definitely a must do for anyone interested in early colonial history. Highly recommend.

A great historic home with a somewhat sad ending. The mansion is top class and I haven't seen anything like it in NZ.
Even the 1919 family car is available for viewing and is in mintcondition, after being fully restored to it original state. The Gardens are also worth a good stroll around, and the flowers are stunning, as per the photos. At $25, in Jan 2023, it's a must do in Christchurch. Thank you.

If you love antique furniture, beautiful dinner-sets, lavishly decorated rooms, Steinway pianos from 1872, Downtown Abbey or Cluedo boardgame vibes - this is the place for you!
Absolutely stunning piece of history from 1904 built by a wealthy Jewish family with many clever features, and donated to the town of Dunedin.
Entry was $25pp. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and could answer all our questions. We saw almost all the rooms in the house: library, dining room, billiards room, bedrooms, drawing rooms, servants quarters, kitchen etc. All original family belongings and many beautiful collections of first edition books. The house still has a live-in caretaker so to respect their privacy the tour doesn't go in those rooms. I was very taken aback when I was permitted to play their beautiful piano and was excited to hear they host concerts. I wish I had known that they also do high tea because I most certainly would have loved this. 😊 Thank you to the staff at Bracken Restaurant for recommending we visit. We LOVED it and I cannot wait to come back. 😊❤️

This is an authentic period correct historic home built in the early 1900s for a wealthy importer. They imported pianos and other musical instruments during a time when entertainment was home made. Apparently a very lucrative trade. The same family lived in the home until 1966. Miraculously, nothing was changed in all that time. So what you see is essentially a time capsule of a particular time in history. Everything is original to the home, so photography inside is frowned upon. If you are interested in social history, furniture and design this place will be endlessly fascinating. My teens were not so enthralled. There is a guided tour. Recommend buying tickets in advance. Don’t miss the lovely gardens and greenhouse and the historic automobile in the garage.

An interesting Victorian /Edwardian house with echoes of Armstrong's Cragside in Northumberland. Tour somewhat odd in that seemed to deliberately underplay the Way that a self made Jewish family used their wealth to make major contributions to the local community. Hiding their roots and ethnicity.

The building itself is steeped in history, with tours of the brewery giving visitors a chance to learn about brewing techniques from years gone by. The Ale House on site also offers dining options, including some hearty fare that can be enjoyed while sipping on some Speight's beer.
We really enjoyed this brewery tour. Our guide was friendly and funny, and the history of the brewery was very interesting. The tasting at the end was good with generous portions. Everyone starts with the gold medal ale, but then you're able to choose the other 2 you want to try.
After the tour we went next door to the Alehouse and had really tasty dinners.

Had a really cool tour led by Tessa and assisted by Luis. It was super interesting learning the history of the brewery as well as about how to make beer. The beer tastings at the end were great too!

Visiting Dunedin for just a few days, and happened to walk by the brewery. Saw the sign for a tour and decided to sign up. So glad I did! First of all - I've never seen a safety video clip made fun anywhere! So the tour was already off to a great start. Our guide Tessa was super knowledgeable but without being overly into boring details. Fun details, yes - the cat on the photo for example! She was approachable and answered all our questions, and overall was a great guide! The tour is definitely among my top favorite moments of the whole NZ trip.
Oh, and the beers are actually really good! Something for every preference :)
Highly recommend, both the tour and beers!

We did the full Speights Brewery tour. Unlike more common (to Victoria) backroom tours, this had a more polished historical/museum like quality. We heard about all of the usual things like hops, water, barley, the malting and milling process, the various tuns, hop bombs, kettles, barrels and so on. But we also saw historical delivery maps and hear about the founders, the business approach, and got to see the old brewery floor as well as the new stainless steel version currently in use. We ended with a stop in the tasting room where all of the current tapes and products could be tested. Well worth doing the tour. The only missing thing was the t-shirts in the store said Speights but not New Zealand, or Dunedin and we like place names to go with the shirts.

The tour provides a good insight into the history of Speights and the beer making process. Great to have a look around the factory. The tasting at the end of the tour was a highlight with the opportunity to try different types of beers and ciders. Large selection of branded merch if you want to take home a souvenir. Thanks to guide Tessa and the Speights team for an informative and fun visit.

The brewery tour priced $22 for adult is totally value for money. Easy explanations and interesting facts with at least 3-4glass tasting section. What else can one want ???? some small bites may be...😁..just kidding. 🍺🍺🍺

Pretty spacious, well set up eating space, good use of tables and well adjusted to accommodate for a large group of people. Speight's catered well to our group of
15's needs, and we were happily seated and set up in no time. Customer service was organized and prompt, and the team delivering our food were courteous.
I ordered the large plate of ribs, and was pleasantly surprised by the arrangement which was well done and very appetizing. Even the medium plate was arranged well
and this was a recurring theme amongst the other dishes my friends decided to order.
I had high expectations for these as I'm always trying to scout the best ribs in town, however am disappointed to say that these did not meet them. The rib meat was overall mediocre, as it did not fall off the
bone and a few pieces were exceptionally dry and difficult to chew, and soon became bland and stringy. I did like the size of these ribs as they were presented in long single
bones, however the quality of the meat prepared was just not up to my standard. There was adequate sauce but it was just a standard bbq, and there seemed to be many
cartilage bone present (or at least in my plate).
The sides were decent-there were some bacon/sausage pieces which made the meal look better, but the taste wasn't anything spectacular, although it was a nice addition. The fries were not made, straight cut and mostly crispy which were a pleasant find especially since they were buried underneath all the ribs and sauce. The salad
was okay, I prefer coleslaw with my ribs, but the pieces of fresh veg on the side were a delight-love me some tomato, capsicum and radish slices!
Overall, it was decent, a good portion for the price theoretically speaking, however for the quality you can definitely find better ribs in Dunedin and at a stellar price! 3/5
As of 6/5 rib ranking in Dunedin: Lone Star (need to visit again for update on consistency in quality) > Ratbags>
50 gorillas (may also need to visit their all you can eat as I hear inconsistency in quality) > Speights

We loved our 5 day cycle tour of the Otago rail trail booked through Cycle Surgery. The ebikes were top notch, comfortable and easy to use. The accommodation was fantastic, including historic buildings, and we even had dinner bookings and transfers to restaurants each night. It was a pleasure to leave our bags each morning, zoom off on our bikes, and find our bags waiting for us at the next stop. The staff were all fun, chatty and interesting. We found the app really useful for our itinerary (including lunch recommendations) and for up to date information about the trail and conditions. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others, and in fact already have.

I can’t say enough about this team. From our initial booking and having a tailor made package for the four of us which suited our needs and budget. We opted for a more expensive package which included the Taieri Railway trip to Middlemarch to start the track and great accomodation for 3 nights from the options offered us. You choose what you want and pay accordingly which suited us fine. Loved the ability of just turning up on day 1 and being able to ride with bikes already sorted and accomodation already prebooked. As we had just come off 3 days on the Routeburn Track we also had the problem of getting all or packs and gear from accommodation to accomodation each night but that was no problem to Cycle Surgery and it arrived at each destination before us each day. From our first contact with them all our queries were answered and promptly- nothing was too hard and if we do the trail again we would use them again. On the completion of the trail and getting transported back to Queenstown we got an excellent commentary from Lonnie about places of interest along the way and showed the value of staff who are engaged with their work as opposed to just turning up each day. I researched service providers on Google before booking and also spoke with friends who had done the Rail Trail and used Cycle Surgery before and went with them. So glad we did and after our experience with them and the comprehensive package and services they offer we highly recommend them.

Every aspect of the service from Cycle Surgery was excellent from start (in 2019 for a March 2020 trip that got called off) to finish (rebooked for Feb 2021 and in the opposite direction - and a marvellous experience). We would unreservedly recommend them - whether you are an experienced cyclist or a newbie. The Rail Trail is wonderful, we will do it again hopefully and if we do we will be on the email to Pip at Cycle Surgery

Unfortunately for us, we didn't book our hire bikes and rail trail tour through Cycle Surgery, otherwise things may have been a bit smoother! We did, however, book a transfer from Dunedin to Middlemarch (with John - what a great guy) to start the rail trail and a jet boat ride out of Alexandra with Lawrence! Lucky we did, as our trip was cut short due to flooding and it was Cycle Surgery to the rescue with a scenic trip with Dave from Middlemarch back to Dunedin.
Cycle Surgery have great facilities and a huge variety of hire bikes for all levels - they cater for day trips on ebikes, adventures on MTBs, or longer trips for those bike packing! They know all there is to know about getting the most out of the time you have and value your holiday time as much as you do! Their business model is all about your happiness and that is very evident in all our dealings with the staff.
When we come back to finish the Roxburgh and Clutha Gold trails, we will definitely be booking through Cycle Surgery!

I had a super easy experience riding the trail after hiring a bike from CCT at Clyde. I returned my bike at middlemarch and took their shuttle back to Dunedin which was convenient and efficient. The bike itself was great, and the spacious dry pannier bags were perfect.

Would highly recommend booking your rail trail adventure with Cycle Surgery. My husband and I booked this last year and did the trail April 2019. Right from the first email, they responded quickly and with a wonderful itinerary, which included transfers to and from Dunedin. The bikes were fantastic, with no issues on the trail. Accommodation was very good, comfy beds and nice and clean and tidy with lovely continental breakfast provided. It was also great to be booked into places for night meals so you didn't have to worry about where to go. If this adventure is on your bucket list, tick it off, it's a must. Contact Cycle Surgery now! You won't be disappointed

The most intriguing place I’ve ever been to in nz - very clever engineered tinkerings with a sense of humour too. If you’re a curious person this place will absolutely delight you 😃 We spent an hour or so in the gallery bus alone pressing every button and winding every handle just to see what happens 😂 I had so much fun here it’s awesome. You can also pay $8 to go into the theatre where the ‘good stuff’ is - and that’s 100% true, the stuff inside the theatre is WAY better than what you see in the bus! I’m not going to spoil it here but I promise you, you are not going to regret it.

Welcome Rock offers an opportunity to explore the highlands and delve into the area's rich gold mining history along the Around the Mountains trail. The region is known for its rural charm and provides a great setting for cycling, allowing visitors to connect with friendly locals. The self-contained setup is ideal for two active individuals, offering opportunities for hiking and biking. The location provides stunning views, although it can get warm inside on clear summer days. However, the lack of light pollution makes for magical night skies.
We had a great trip, Tom kindly let us borrow his jeep as our rental car had a low spoiler and would have had difficulty up the Nevis Road. The track is amazing beautiful views and rock formations. We didn’t see anyone so the sense of seclusion was wonderful. Mud hut is cool a rustic historical hut we had a lovely fire and the outdoor bath we loved it. We didn’t have time to hike the loop but enjoyed what we did. I have recommended to fellow trampers . I really enjoyed having peace and quiet and came back feeling relaxed. Thankyou for sharing your beautiful place.
Alison Slack — Google review
The trail was recommended and we did enjoy it, especially being able to stay in Mud Hut. However, the trail was probably at the upper end of my comfort zone. The grade was fine but the track's original width is now overgrown and for quite a lot of it was only about 200mm wide. I think if I had the confidence on my bike that i had 10 years ago (when i was 50) I would have been fine, but as it was I had to get off a lot on the tricky turns areas around the stream crossings especially, and my foot would disappear into the shrubbery and my bike and I would tip into the ditch. A great ride for the confident, and a good ride if you don't mind getting on and off your bike on a narrow trail. The scenery is great - though we had pretty low cloud for much of the ride. The fire wood supplied in the hut was welcome. Mud Hut is very rustic (so felt the price per night was a bit steep despite gas and fire wood being supplied) but so cool to stay in such an old and sort of original (restored) hut. The water supply to the hut did not work when we were there. the tank was full though and we could get the water from the pipe that ran to the outdoor bath. Fraid we did not try that - didn't feel like fluffing around lighting the fire underneath it.

We stayed at Slate Hut and it was so good!! This rustic back country hut is very private with incredible views. We had no wind so was happy to enjoy a nice soak in the outdoor tub. The bike track was great and felt longer than the 27km it was. Would definitely recommend!

Epic long medium difficulty hike with insane views the whole way. We hiked the almost full loop and stayed at Slate Hut the first day. We did it in late May in early winter conditions--lots of wet slippery and icy sections but doable. It took us 8 hrs and we got to shelter at sunset. Views were epic at the hut. Hut is well furnished with comfy foam beds and gas cookers. The water tap was frozen in the morning even though we closed it at night. The car is less than an hr away though at this point. It was an epic long walk. Cheers.

Welcome Rock 47km bike ride was such an amazing experience! Although tough and challenging, I love the idea of doing this with my partner and also bringing a beer a chop for a nice celebration finish. Great location, very comfortable hut, stunning views and amazing outdoor bath. Would recommend being very wary of the outlet on the bath, as it spits out boiling water erratically & actually burnt my wife badly on the elbow. I bought a voucher for my Husband’s Birthday, it took us almost a year to redeem it, it was however well worth the wait. We added on the platter and breakfast options and bag drop. The tracks were challenging for me as I’m not single track fit, my kids 10 and 12 managed really well this was also terrain they weren’t used to. We loved the experience the history and how Tom had a vision and has through that created a very special experience.

loved our stay at Slate Hut for my fiance's 25th birthday, a bit more rustic than I expected (mostly due to previous guests not tidying like they should've 😕) but otherwise epic! Stayed 2 nights in the snow, couldn't do the trail cos the snow was too deep, so relaxed at the hut and sat in the hot tub to watch the sun set 😁 great compromise as we had to walk up from the bottom of the Nevis road due to too much snow on the road (Tom offered to give us a lift!). It was sooo private and incredible views, we loved it, will be back in summer to try find that Welcome Rock whisky.

As a long-time local, I am totally blown away by having this epic experience on our doorstep. I am torn.... I want to tell everyone, but want to also keep this treasure a secret!
We hiked it as there was too much snow to bike. Having our packs taken in made for an easy walk along the water-race the whole way. This allowed us to cook great meals. We even had snow to cool down our Gin & Tonic's while in a hot bath!
The hut had all the charm you could hope for including evidence of cute furry little visitors. It simply wouldn't be the wilderness without them.
This might just be an experience of a life-time for many experiencing the serenity of simplicity. Next time I will take my kids as the trail can really be walked by anyone who just has the want to put one foot in front of the other. No big hills. Small waterfalls and interests along the trail.... and even one you can swim in. We got epic weather, but make sure you prep for all possibilities. And bring some chocolate for the Welcome Rock lookout :)

My family and I have stayed at nearly all of the Welcome Rock huts and each one has been incredible. They all offer a different unique adventure and a new slice of paradise.
I booked a girlfriend and I in at the “KIT CABIN” for her 40th bday present and it was unreal! We loved it! This gorgeous little cabin tucked up in the hillside- with 360 views of the surrounding mountains and farm was breath taking. We enjoyed having a glass of bubbles while relaxing in the hot tubs watching the sunset. Then witnessing the night sky come alive full of stars.
It was truely magical! The solar power in the cabin was so nice and the fire place- devine!
I can’t wait to come back again and again!
Thanks Tom and Katie for yet another epic experience and stay on your beautiful farm.

We biked in to Slate Hut. The trail isn’t that well maintained. The hut had amazing views. We assumed it would have a fire (no). It would be great if it did! We couldn’t get the outdoor bath up to a warm temp after a few hours of trying. Also the hut could have been cleaner given the price point.

Lovely unique accommodation away from it all in the country. We loved every minute of our stay. Nice and clean. Well presented. Loved everything about it. Would def book again, if we stay in the area in the future. Seeing all the trails listed, makes me wish I did trail riding.

True to description, The Mud Hut at Welcome Rock is rustic and authentic (if you're more into glamping and boujee great walk huts - opt for the Slate Hut). Everything you need and nothing you do not, the restoration of this Hut gives you an experience of yesteryear with the benefit of a fire, water, composting loo and gas to cook on).
A perfect choice for an evening with friends that enjoy getting away from civilisation.
An outdoor bath from which to stargaze rewards the effort of lighting the fire.
Tom, the mastermind behind the operation who hand-built the trails is beyond accommodating and only too happy to help and answer questions (he hand-built the trail) and there's a strong likelihood you may see him running through the tussock.
An easy and accessible drive from throughout Otago and Southland, it's perfect for an overnight mission without having to lug an enormous amount of gear.
Ps: take firelighters + matches etc - thank yourself later!
Note: prepare for the conditions and changeable weather as you are in an alpine environment.

The Red Shed is located near farmhouse and is a cosy and clean renovated woolshed and perfect for a back to basics getaway. It's for all the facilities you need and 2 lovely outdoor bath which were awesome after a long day walking. The walk itself it a beautiful 27km walk through the hills seeing a part of the countryside normally not accessible. The trail though long is easy to walk on so easily do-able in about 7-8 hours. We will definitely go back as we loved it.

Just wonderful - a magnificent place. A safe, great and very accessible proper back country experience. We found ourselves unexpectedly snowed in in March. We needed a bit of a rescue which, while it was no big drama and a real highlight of our whole NZ trip, made us realise that waterproof footwear would've been a good idea. If we'd had that we could have easily walked out. So while it's easy and accessible compared to anything else like it, you're still very much in the high country and it needs due preparation and respect.

Very peaceful location.
A few things I wish was a bit clearer, we stayed at the slate hut, and didn't get the bag transfer as we thought cycling a couple of kms would be fine, the track however I'd say was above grade 3, perhaps a 4 or even a 5 in some parts, going by what the grades are in other places, you definitely need biking experience. The slate hut as well was more like 3 ks to it according to our watch. There was running water, which was great, also they have mugs and wine glasses, lots of pillows (we brought pillow cases), we chopped up some wood for kindling and really enjoyed the outdoor bath, and it was nice they have a couple of stoves for cooking on too. I'd suggest getting the bag transfers if biking as ours was quite heavy and was a bit of a mission, and we had to go in the wrong direction back with them when the track is suggested to go anti clockwise only, as there is no way we were cycling the whole loop with them. The track up to the old ski hut is pretty well maintained we had a 2 wheel drive only. We were lucky with the weather and watched a stunning sunset.
Will def reccommend to friends as I've been living in QT over ten years and it really is such a cute little spot. Just be prepared and you don't need to carry too much water as the water at the hut is safe to drink, and be prepared for the biking if you're not the most confident you may need to hop off at parts.
Thank you. :)

Lovely location and brand new self contained set up, perfect spot for 2 active people. You can hike or bike from here. Tom was super easy to communicate with and very friendly & flexible. On a clear summer day it might get a little warm inside so a gazibo or shade outside is very helpful, but then the clear sky at night is just magic, no light pollution around. Still not a fan of composting toilets, that'd be my only observation but alternatively, long drops or septic tanks have their own issues. Also, one can take the Nevis road from here over to Cromwell (only 4x4), good fun and stunning views. All in all, highly recommended and kinds thanks!

Beautiful tranquil spot up at slate hut. Barely saw a human in our 2 night stay, just great views and a unique accommodation experience. The hut has good gas burners and an awesome terrace for soaking up sun, but is a bit rustic (not the cleanest) as could be expected of a back country hut. Nil rodent sightings though :) The outdoor bath would be great if you could get it hot enough. Might be down to our fear of losing a toe if we tried to cut kindling!
Tom was super helpful and friendly - seems like a very interesting bloke!

The Glenorchy-Queenstown Road is a scenic route that winds through the mountains of New Zealand's South Island. This roadway provides access to some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the region, offering breathtaking views of mountain ranges, clear blue lakes, and unspoiled wilderness. The road is well-maintained and features many pull-off points where visitors can stop and take in the surrounding beauty.
Heli Glenorchy offers an unforgettable experience to explore the stunning natural beauty of the area from above. With a variety of flights and charters available, one popular option includes a snow landing on the Humboldt Mountains. Visitors rave about the breathtaking views during helicopter rides, especially when flying over Earnslaw Burn with its cascading waterfalls. The professionalism and friendliness of the staff contribute to making this aerial adventure a must-do when in New Zealand.
Couldn’t believe the views through the flight and from the top of the mountain! Highlight of our South Island trip. Absolutely worth the $$. Our pilot was a lovely guy. Gave us great commentary and even took some photos for us.

We did the short flight which took us to a landing spot in the snow on the remarkable mountain range where we got out for some photos and then down and around the greater Queenstown area.
It is a bit pricey, but overall worth the money for the experience.
High Country Horses offers a nostalgic and relaxing experience, allowing visitors to explore 150,000 acres of pristine back-country on horseback. With options for half-day or multi-day tours, experienced guides lead the way through stunning countryside. The well-mannered and trained horses cater to both beginner and experienced riders, providing a deeply personal and intimate tour of nature. Located in Glenorchy, it's essential to have a car as the farm is not near any other amenities.
During my stay on the south island, this was one of my favorite highlights!
Me being a horse owner, and my husband not so much. The time they took to go over everything with everyone regardless of experience was very comforting.
They pair you up with the perfect horse for you and your riding level, and give you time to get acquainted with your horse before you head out!
All of the workers were absolutely fabulous, and friendly. The knowledge was impeccable and I learned stuff I never would of known! The ride was about and hour and a half threw amazing scenery, it was breathtaking (also you ride by the Misty Mountains from the LOTR). The horses were awesome the whole ride, the trail was smooth and flawless. I will be coming back the next time I come to NZ!

We were lucky to book on this date! Such amazing weather
Thanks to Amy Anna and Stella for all your hospitality.
We loved it so much!!
The 2.5hour ride was definitely the best for beginners

Amazing scenery! Horses are very obedient so this is a great activity even if you have not ridden a horse ever. Instructors and guides are friendly and patient too. Go for the 2+ hour package and you won't regret it!

An absolute fun with this experience. Our guide Melissa is really experience and we had no worries at all. Highly recommended to go for longer rides if you're a nature person 🥳 Thank you for making our honeymoon an awesome one! Not forgetting Marley and Hotwheels!! Hope to ride them again when I visit!

My dad and I had an incredible time on this 2.5 hr trail ride. Our guide Sean had the best LOTR facts, was patient, and a great instructor. My dad and I were the only ones on this ride which made it even more special. The views were spectacular and the horses were sweet and well behaved. Memories for a lifetime! Would come back again.

We had an incredible 2.5 hrs horse ride here in Rees valley. Quite a unique experience riding horse in the lords of rings scene. Must-try activity around QT.

What a day. We loved our cinematic ride through the stunning countryside of Paradise. It really is Paradise 🤩. Faith was a knowledgeable and calm guide making those less experienced at ease and had loads to tell about LOTR filming sites and facts, also many more that I had no idea were filmed in the area. Exceeded expectations, horses with great temperament but also character and charm. Callum gave us some interesting facts about flora and fauna on the way to the location as well. We had the perfect day. Would love to go back! The drive from QT to Glenorchy is superb also.

Incredible place. I did the full day ride and absolutely loved it. The horses were all forward and great to ride - not for beginners as stated on the ride description. Thank you to Tyla and Patty and the wonderful Lonestar!

I would highly recommend this place for horse back riding experience. The lead was very professional and ensured that all of us felt comfortable and safe during the ride. Though I was quite terrified, I did enjoy the 2.5 hour ride!

Spectacular experience. Highlight of my trip to the area. Guides were welcoming and knowledgeable. Highly recommended. Really magical seeing lotr scenery and learning about the topography of the area.
Leave plenty of time if traveling from Queenstown in Winter months - need to drive slower due to black ice on roads and I was only just on time.

Location was amazing. We had amazing service from our horse riding instructor who I think was Bailey. She’d been very positive and educational on our experience and despite coming from the USA only a little while ago, she was able to teach us, things about our own country. Absolutely appreciate the service. Will be coming again hopefully soon.

Friendly guides, healthy horses, fabulous day. Our guides, Añia and Hattie, did a great job leading us through the riparian forest and across braided glacier-fed river valleys in the shadows of the mountains of ‘Middle-Earth’. We did the 3 hour excursion.
Easy 1 hour drive from Queenstown.

Located out at Glenorchy, it's a short-medium drive away from Queenstown, town centre. However, when you arrive at Glenorchy, it's a very very quiet town. The farm is not located near any other amenities which means that having a car or renting car is essential. Lookout for the signage as you approach, as you'll need to pay close attention to ensure you don't turn down the wrong drive way / farm.
You will arrive at the farm and proceed through the easy check-in process (including signing off the mandatory waivers). You arrive at the farm and the view is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! Soak it up on a nice sunny day.
For the colder days, there are jackets available which help but you will find are usually covered in horse hair. Ensure you bring your own jacket for the wind/cold so you don't have to use the jackets provided. Note: you may need a lint roller after the ride with the horse hair you pick up along the way. They do provide riding boots which helps against the wind and when you cross rivers/water sections.
After a small introduction, you are quickly shown your way through to the horses with instructors teaching you how to mount the horses and how to ride them. The instructors are very friendly and communicate very well.
During the ride, the instructors are helpful in leading and following the riding pack with some that ride along side for riders who are struggling or horses refusing to follow instructions. There were good informative pieces of information about the location and scenery, however it does feel like the instructors speak a bit too much given that it's quiet and you just want to enjoy the breath taking views!
Overall, it's a great day out, enjoyed it thoroughly with a group of friends.

Routeburn Track is a 36 km hike that doesn't involve any sidewalks and takes an average of 20 minutes per kilometer. It typically takes two days to complete, with almost constant rain making it essential to keep moving. Despite the weather, the scenery is diverse and breathtaking, offering a moderately challenging trek suitable for various hikers. It's recommended to take two nights to fully enjoy the experience.
Great hike, our watch shows 36 km and we didn’t take any sidewalks. Average space was 20 minutes per kilometre. Completed it in two days.
It’s almost always raining over there, so you will not have a possibility to stop. Sit relax and eat something while watching the views, prepare to be always on the go because of wind and rain.

Awesome 3 days hike destination !
Located in between Mount Aspiring & Fiordland National Park is the home To Kea Birds ( New Zealand Endemic bird).
Track start with easy 2 - 3 hours trail to the first camp, then hike up [ moderate ] to the first Hut [ Routeburn Flats hut ] where you can rest / stay ( you have to pay for the accommodation)
Then Up through the stoney trails to lake Harris and up to Harris Saddle [ Highest point in the National Park ] , you will also find a shelter here where you can rest and toilet is available.
Another 4 hours track to Beautiful Lake MacKenzie [ easy hike ] where you will find another hut and campsite.
Then 3 hours track heading to Lake Bowen where you will find another campsite and another 1 hour to head to your final destination The Divide.
Overall, this is one of my favorite hikes, totally worth to go !

An amazing trek! The scenery is breathtaking and diverse. The hike is moderately challenging and suitable for a variety of hikers. I recommend taking 2 nights to make the most of your days. Just be aware that it's not a circular trail; we took a shuttle between the two points to avoid backtracking.

I haven’t even been there. Just looked at it in street view. Very impressive.
Awesome experience, we had great weather which allowed us to see the tops of the mountains, but only the permanent waterfalls were going. The staff were friendly and Courtney very informative on so many topics, top marks. Food was excellent and plenty of it. We went canoeing and some even went swimming. Got to go right out to the tasman sea, past heres ears, then saw seals. Over night on ship and some great early morning shots. Must do for everyone coming to NZ

I wasnt a big fan of the cruise, partly the weather was terrible and bucketing down rain. Ship felt like it was about to sink and almost impossible to go on the viewing deck without being thrown overboard by the turbulent waves. The best part of the cruise was the amazing soup they serve on board and the staff were also very friendly too! The soup is definitely a must try!

Great experience!
The staff are nice, there's 3 platforms to watch the surroundings. There's sitting area inside the boat.
Make sure to buy the ticket with the underwater observatory, great experience!
There was super strong wind so bring hat or something to cover your ears and good jacket.

Nice, clean and detailed commentary on board with huge knowledge about mountain 🏔️ and waterfall. No speakers outside was downfall, could not hear anything when you out on deck. Well presented staff, helpful and caring while on board. Under water observatory was nice thing to do actually but due to weather was not able to see much things in marine. Enjoyable, recommended.

4 stars for the experience in the cruise, 2 stars for the toilet. The smell of this place was not good at all, even in the lobby you can smell something fishy there. The cruise was clean, view was amazing
Oppa Kuliner — Google review
The cruise was really good and worth it. If the weather is raining on the day and the days prior to the trip, this will be good as you will experience more waterfalls in Milford
Sound. If you lucky, you can see dolphins and penguins, but the cruise captain will alert you as he would have the best view of the ocean. You won’t go out deep into the ocean especially if there is bad weather or if the sea is tough. There is food (cold and hot) and drinks on the cruise, a bit pricey, but that is expected. PLEASE NOTE. Car park if 10/15 min walk from the cruise/ferry terminal (unless you come in a coach as they will park near the terminal in the coach car park.) parking in very expensive, we paid $30 for 3 hours. But that is not cruise company fault.

Went with Southern Discoveries for our cruise and it was amazing! We went with the lunch option and the food was delicious! The crew on board were lovely to deal with and the captain was extremely skilled. Would definitely recommend this. Make sure you get your food and eat fast because not long after the cruise starts. All in all, amazing experience!

A nice company and the trip was run by friendly staff. We had a good time but sometimes we’re left wondering what was happening next. While the kayak was fun and informative it is for the complete novice only and stays in a nice but hidden bay. It misses going out into the sound and requires virtually no paddling. Not recommended for seasoned kayakers.

It was a cool experience, we had luck that it was a very clear day but because of that there werent many waterfalls - the tour guide was very friendly and liked what he does- very authentic - you could learn a lot in the science center

Hard not to give Milford Sound a 5 star review. Of the 40 countries I have visited, this is the most awe inspiring place I have been in the world. Our trip on the Southern Discoveries ship was fabulous even though it was raining. Fun fact - rain makes waterfalls and even though the weather for our trip was gloomy, waterfalls were everywhere. So don’t despair if the weather is rainy as it rains 250 days per year here. We also did the stop at the underwater viewing and I’d honestly say that’s probably something you could skip if pressed for time. The drive from Te Anau takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes without stops. But why hurry? The drive there is stunning so plan on 2.5 hours and be happy you arrived early. We booked the 10:30am tour and glad we did. The boat was only half full at most. By the time we returned at 1:30pm, the lot was full of tour busses. Book ahead of time in high season.

I think i had a great tour with southern discoveries. They offered a splendid coach with glass ceiling. The guide as well as driver was super nice. He even made a stop to let us see sceneries and take some photos. Their lunch boxes were great but i guess they are a little bit overpriced for what they have
Crystal Kang — Google review
We had a great experience with this company! We did the Milford sound cruise and kayak option which included a stop at the underwater observatory. The cruise was great! Amazing views of Milford sound, great captain who took us up close to many waterfalls and pointed out wildlife (seals and penguins!). Provided lunch was simple but filling. The kayak experience was also great, very well organized, no prior experience needed. The only thing to note about the kayaking though is that you basically just to a big loop in sheltered Harrison cove, where there aren’t many (if any at all) falls. The scenery is beautiful, and we got lucky and saw penguins! The underwater observatory was a cool addition, but not something I would specifically pay extra for had it not already been included.

Really fun and beautiful cruise. We took the one with the buffet meal and my daughter took the vegetarian picnic/ boxed lunch. The buffet was ample, but they only serve it the first 30 minutes of the cruise, so eat fast. There were 2 main meat dishes, 1 main vegetarian dish, 3-4 sides (all vegetarian), garlic bread, 3 types of salad, fruit, and 2 desserts. Plus tea, coffee, and water for everyone. The boxed lunch was a sandwich, apple, orange, chips, protein snack, cheese/ crackers, and 2 pieces of chocolate for dessert. The captain did a good job of showing us some seals and various birds that were nearby. He went up to several waterfalls (if you are outside, you WILL get wet). The audio system in the boat wasn't great, or maybe people were just talking too loudly, so we couldn't hear most of what he was saying but the views were jaw-dropping good! The people working were very friendly.

We had a really great experience with the cruise and kayak tour! We even saw a penguin while on the cruise. Highly recommend both, we would have loved to kayak a bit longer. Jared was a great guide! Make sure to bring a water bottle for a chance to fill it up with glacier water.

The whole experience was amazing. Our driver, Roland, was just perfect with his commentary along the way and provided a number of stops for us to take photos, have toilet breaks and get our morning coffee! Everything was so well organised, from initial pick up, to coach trip, to cruise, to fly back. Everything communicated and co-ordinated to perfection . The lunch on board the cruise is definitely worth doing and worth paying the extra to reserve front seats in the coach (if this is important to you). Our pilot Megan gave us a wonderful experience on the flight back to Queenstown - so professional and great fun.
An all round great experience and would really recommend this as a 'must do'.

Cruise Milford offers a small-group tour at 2:45 pm, with an alternative scenic cruise at 3:15 pm on a larger vessel. The company is praised for its impeccable service and small boat size, ensuring a less crowded experience and perfect views of Milford Sound. The mid-November cruise departed with only about 15 other people, providing an almost private boat feel.
Absolutely incredible! From the time we arrived until we left, we had a blast. The skipper and crew were super friendly, helpful and accommodating. The beds were very comfortable, the food was plentiful and the non-stop coffee services was much appreciated. Add all of this to the stunning scenery, great water activities and a clear night to watch the stars and the star-link pass over - just magic! Without doubt, one of the best value excursions we've done in New Zealand. Don't hesitate, just book it!

I had the pleasure of experiencing this cruise and it was unforgettable. The relaxed ambience on board was very inviting (and not overcrowded!), which made it easier to appreciate the breathtaking scenery of Milford Sounds (nothing short of a fantasy movie, Lord of the Rings anyone?).
The skipper's knowledge of the area was impressive, and he would inform us of what to expect in advance, ensuring that we didn't miss anything. The crew and staff were accommodating and always available, and the tea, coffee, and cookies provided during the cruise were a welcome touch (and a necessity if you were brave enough to accept the waterfall challenge).
Overall, the experience exceeded my expectations, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience. The vessel used for the cruise was well equipped and suitable for families, with both indoor and outdoor seating areas (I took my 2 kids there and they approve this message!, of course it is not a playground so be mindful of safety and others).
In conclusion, if you're looking to enjoy the stunning scenery of Milford Sounds while learning about the area's history and taking great photos, this cruise is the perfect choice.

10/10 BEST boat tour to see Milford Sound!! If you are trying to find the best tour when going to Milford Sound, look no further! Cruise Milford is a family run business and we had an excellent time cruising with them. We saw seals on our tour and also had tea and cookies as well. It was such a pleasant experience and special that we got to see Milford Sound on an unusually sunny day. Highly recommend booking with them for this once in a lifetime cruise through the 8th wonder of the world!

We booked online and everything went smoothly. We called once to move our booking the next day and they were super fast in serving our request.
When we arrived the check in was super easy. No queue at their desk and they were very friendly and polite.
During the cruise, we got lots of informations from our captain.
NOTE: the only thing that they should improve is the sound system / microphone on the boat. The sound was not clear and we couldn’t understand many of the interesting facts the captain was telling us. However, the views were so amazing that I couldn’t resist giving a 5 stars review. Milford Sound is definitely amazing and worth the trip!

Visiting Milford Sound, especially during a heavy rain, is an experience of a lifetime. The rain transforms the landscape into a mystical wonderland, with waterfalls cascading dramatically from the cliffs, creating a breathtaking panorama. The mist and the lush greenery add a surreal quality to the already stunning scenery. The cruise was comfortable and the guides were knowledgeable, enhancing the experience with interesting facts and stories. Despite the rain, or perhaps because of it, the beauty of Milford Sound was magnified, leaving an indelible impression. Truly a five-star, unforgettable adventure!

A great way to explore Milford Sound. We were incredibly lucky with the weather on the day but the smaller boat and restricted numbers made were a big plus. The boat is very spacious and there is plenty of room to roam around upstairs and downstairs, inside and out, without constantly having to push past people to get a photo.

With Cruise Milford only allowing a 50% capacity onboard, to what they are allowed to run, gives a very personal experience. This is the reason we 100% recommend this company. We felt as if our family were the only ones on board, allowing us to roam around the boat freely capturing breathtaking photos whilst being guided by a very experienced team. You’ll be pleased you booked with Cruise Milford as you watch the other boats be filled with 200 + passengers.

The trip was enjoyable. Staff was helpful and kept refilling drinks and snacks. There were biscuits, coffee, and tea supplied. The ship was not too full so there was a lot of space to move around. We were lucky to be there on a sunny day.
Separately, parking is $10 per hour and one typically spends three hours there.
Larry Auyeung — Google review
This smaller size boat is a great way to enjoy Milford Sound from the water. Compared to some of the larger ships, you'll feel closer to the water and nature. And given that you'll see sea life and appreciate getting close to the waterfalls when the captain brings the boat near them, this is the best boat to choose to tour the Sound.
Do bring foul weather gear. We had rain, wind, sunshine, calmness...it was like four seasons in one day. And that's typical on Milford Sound. The crew offers hot beverages as well as cold, and I highly recommend the tea and coffee!
Be sure to bring your camera. This is one of the most beautiful, scenic places you'll ever see.
This boat took us far out in the Sound, almost to the open ocean, and then back to the port. It was a marvelous day on the water.
Being on the water, you won't have to worry about bugs but remember to wear long pants for when you're back on land. Those nasty sand flies go for your ankles~!

Brilliant cruise! I was worried it won’t be fun as the weather was cloudy but it was brilliant! Not too many people compared to other boats it looks like a private tour! Fun info and comments along the way, amazing stops for seals and waterfalls (only me and two other kids were the brave ones) and you have free tea, coffee and biscuits.

Our Cruise Milford tour was great. It was a nice sunny day - which was unusual it's usually rainy. The views and waterfalls were scenic and beautiful. Our guide was very informative and the length of the tour was a good amount of time to be engaged and see the sights without growing tired/seasick.
Avril Saunders — Google review
The cruise was amazing. Did the 2:45pm small boutique cruise with tea/coffee/biscuits and it was great. We stayed outside the whole ride but there was enough space inside to sit if we got cold.
We saw dolphins and seals relaxing on their rocks and the boat stopped to not scare them off and to let us watch them.
The boat took us under a fall so we got a bit wet (they warned us) but what an experience!
Milford Sound is just exceptionally beautiful with all the magnificent mountains (they are so vertical and impressive, it looks more like cliffs and we were right under, which was simply amazing).
The boat guide told us many interesting facts about the fjord, throughout the whole ride.
Expensive but well worth the money in my opinion,it is an amazing way to discover this place (although our cruise started in the clouds before we got some blue sky, so we did feel a bit disappointed as we could imagine the potential of the sound, but not see it all.. lucky for us, the clouds disappeared quite fast.)

There are so many cruises you can choose, but we picked Cruise Milford as a local company and a smaller boat. They truly delivered! A very intimate experience with plenty of space (as we saw the hoards of crowds boarding the other large boats we knew we made the right choice). And a bonus: because their boat is smaller we could get up close to some of the waterfalls and it was such a magical experience all around. Recommend to all!
Becca Potter — Google review
Our 9:45am, mid-November cruise of Milford Sound departed with only about 15 other people, so it almost felt like we had the boat to ourselves. Got to see a few NZ fur seals and fjordland crested penguins. Greatly appreciated the informative and entertaining commentary, which was audible inside, up top, and on the front deck. Milford Sound is beautiful, but the cruise was also fun - getting up close to the waterfalls was a rush. You are given time to get inside if you don't want to participate but if you're on the front deck you will get wet. Another fun thing is to ride the waves on the front deck at the sea mouth - hold on tight. Would have been happy to leave a review on TripAdvisor but took too long to leave a review (!) and the link expired. Small boat, clean & in good condition. Crew were nice and offered to take photos. Complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits. The tour took 2hrs. Definitely recommend this operator.

The views were absolutely stunning and our guide John had some interesting things to say about the history and Maōri origin of the places we saw. After a bus ride to the terminal (interrupted by several short but beautiful walks both on the way there and back!) we boarded a catamaran to take us through the sound and again we were floored by the surrounding vistas. The operator provided a lunch packet which was very nice and we had a fantastic day in and around Milford Sound!

It was a really wonderful day! Really worth it. Service was good and attentive from the moment we bought our tickets until our return. Professional staff, enthusiastic guide, funny driver. He drove very smoothly on the difficult road.
On the way there were three stops for people to take pictures, a little sightseeing and three stops for you to go to the toilet. Food on board is fresh, yummy. You should order food soon because they sell out very quickly.

Lovely Japanese lunch onboard. Freezing cold on the deck during winter but the views were fantastic. A must visit although the trip from any town to Milford sound is really far. We spotted dolphins and seals along the way.Commentary on board was pretty good too.

We took the bus tour of the Milford sound followed by a cruise. Though the bus journey was long, our driver Bruce was excellent, cheerful and had great banter and constantly gave us a running commentary along the journey. The cruise itself was excellent, there was ample room on the boat and the running commentary was very informative, though a little quiet in a few parts of the boat. We decided to upgrade on the return and forgo the bus trip and take a private plan back to Queenstown. This was facilitated by Bruce but provided by True south flights. This was an exceptional experience and made the day. Overall we had a great day, highly recommended

Amazing experience. We took the bus from Te Anau with our driver Brian who was lovely. A few stops along the road to Milford Sound for some photographs and a restroom break. And then the boat trip was just amazing, we had some of the best weather, clear blue skies and no clouds. I really can't say enough about our RealNZ experiences! We did the Doubtful sound, Milford Sound and Glow Worm Caves tours and they were all incredible! Doubtful was by far my fave, so peaceful and beautiful, it's just perfection! I'm so happy I chose RealNZ, the people were outstanding! The bus drivers were so kind and funny and you can really tell they love their jobs and this beautiful country. The boat crews were also incredible, literally the kindest, most knowledgeable staff. Regarding the tours themselves, absolutely stunning scenery and please don't be sad if you see a rainy day for your forecast, it just brings a different kind of beauty! 10/10 I would recommend all of the tours! ❤️
*Please remember the glow worm tour is a cave, so if you are claustrophobic keep that in mind. ❣️

This was my favorite thing in the whole NZ trip. The la escapes are amazing and the guide knew so much about nature and its environment. The food was also really good. Just an unforgettable experience.

Absolutely amazing, we got lucky with the weather. Fantastic tour operations, knowledgeable staff on boat. We saw a lot of dolphins, seals and even penguins. I’ve never seen penguins swim, but that was really cool.
Breathtaking views. Dress warm or bring layers, maybe even bring a small towel to dry the seats for the first ride of the day as the seats on the deck were wet. I would recommend sitting on the upper deck and the starboard side of the boat for the best viewing (that is just my personal opinion). We got the warmth of the sun as we headed out in the morning. Again dress appropriately, bring layers and a wind breaker, you want to be outside not sitting inside.

Wow! My recent boat tour to Milford Sound with RealNZ was absolutely incredible! From the moment I stepped onto the coach bus for the ride to Milford Sound, I knew I was in for a treat. The journey itself felt like a scenic tour through Jurassic Park, with breathtaking waterfalls and stunning landscapes at every turn.
The boat tour itself was the highlight of my trip. The scenery was simply stunning, with majestic mountains rising from the deep blue waters, and the waterfalls were absolutely breathtaking. Our driver was not only friendly and polite but also incredibly knowledgeable about Milford Sound, adding depth to the experience with fascinating insights and stories.
Overall, I can't recommend this tour enough. If you're looking for an unforgettable experience surrounded by natural beauty and accompanied by friendly and knowledgeable staff, look no further than RealNZ's boat tour to Milford Sound. It truly exceeded all my expectations!

This experience was a lot better than I expected. Ticket purchase online, check-in, the bus ride and the boat tour were seamless. It was all very comfortable, not over crowded and very civilized. Our bus driver, Reynald, was excellent, providing interesting commentary along the way. Same for the nature guide on the boat and the sound system was good. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Decided to take the Milford Sound Cruise and Coach from Queenstown. The trip didn't disappoint in any way. Luke was an informative driver which made the coach part enjoyable and the cruise was absolutely amazing. Fortunately for us it was a perfect day weather-wise and the sights were quite breathtaking. Would highly recommend taking this tour

One of best tours I've done. Since not staying in Queenstown CBD, most other tour companies have you pay own expense to get to frankton bus station. However, RealNZ arranges and pays for pickup taxi to bus station included.
The bus was gorgeous with the large windows on side and top, another feature most other tour companies didn't seem to have. There was ample space within the bus with gorgeous views.
On the way to the sound, the bus driver gave commentary on the area which (if not choosing to fall asleep since pickup was early 😆) seemed to be very interesting. The driver also stopped several times for breaks and scenic stops.
Once on the boat, more gorgeous views. Having clear skies probably helped.
But for RealNZ specifically, from online booking with 10% off code, to pickup, to on the trip, to the ride back was fantastic.

We went to Milford Sounds tour from Queenstown with Realnz was very impressive experience. Our driver Dani was very sweet for stopping as many as spots for photo shooting on the way to Mildford Sound as long as the time was allowed for catching the cruise. My 73yo mum easy to get carsick but she was satisfied with Dani’s driving. Sitting was comfortable even it was a long trip from 6:55am to 7:30pm. Cruising in the Mildford Sound was amazing. We got very lucky to have a sunny day, saw dolphins seals and incredible sceneries. Very informative staff on the cruise. Great service driver, bus and will highly recommended!

I could not rate our trip with RealNZ highly enough! We had a terrible experience with an alternate operator the day before but turned out for the better. The day started with a happy friendly greeting at the pickup point and just got better from there. The trip was long but made all the more enjoyable by the very informative commentary by Brandon, our brilliant bus driver. Given RealNZ had four buses heading to Milford that day, he made every effort possible to make every stop uncluttered by other buses and tours. His patience was tested at times but remained professional and courteous under the pressure of time constraints. Once at Milford Sound, the cruise spoke for itself. Again, very informative commentary and plenty of time for us all to take in the majesty of the area. Again, could not rate our experience highly enough! Brandon, mate, you’re a fantastic tour guide.

What a fantastic day trip! The bus tour component was such a great start with our very knowledgeable and friendly driver Luke. He really set the scene for what was such a magical day. We boarded The Mariner and enjoyed the magnificence of Milford Sound from the top deck. We saw dolphins, fur seals and of course the waterfalls with the lovely nature guide commentary teaching us about local maori legends which were greatly received. Luke mentioned the possibility of flying back which we chose, so he organised the bookings during our stop at Te Anau and met us off the boat to direct us to the right counter. 10/10!

We visited Milford Sound on a very windy and rainy day, so we didn't get to see the clear blue waters and experience the peaceful cruise. However we did experience something very different. Both on the cruise and on the coach journey, the rain had created hundreds of stunning waterfalls cascading down the mountains, so there is always something to see on this trip. Johnny the bus driver was very accommodating with commentary and stops along the way.

- Been told to wait at the front of hotel Copthorne at 7:45am and it’s 8:36 still no show for the driver nor the bus
- Called the provider couldn’t call through can’t even leave a VM
- Called Jucy, outside of business hours until 9am
- another 23 mins to 9am and I wonder what you gotta say
- if bus got delayed or you could have emailed same if the trip got cancelled
Very interesting and waiting out in the cold IS NOT FUN
8:47 Jucy cruise bus gone straight pass the hotel pick up point.
9:10 finally call through, staff advised unsure what happened but unable to contact the driver as she is driving and unable to pick us up, will call back once get in touch with the driver (driving and unable to make contacts)
11:04 call back received advising the pickup location had been changed to Stanly St (?), outbound calls had been made and VM had been left on the phones on files advising the new pickup location. The number we left was the one from Aus so didt it.
- A rescheduled tour had been offered. But I doubt anyone would be able to take as the natural of planned holiday is to have most of the days booked.
- normally they wouldn’t do anything if the customers are “no show” but due to our particular scenario a full refund will be processed
A lot of things could have been done to have this situation avoided however none of them happened (eg an email notification, email is left on the book for a reason. A detour at the original pick up location to see if there’s anyone there? Well I must admit the oversea number I had left on the file isn’t helpful but I don’t suppose everyone to have a local number to travel overseas?)
Don’t know what to say at this stage but I guess what I want is to share our story here and hopefully no other guests that wishing to enjoy NZ holiday need to go through this. And I guess our 90mins wait out in the cold is just the way it is.
Thanks to the reception girl that was trying to help, but this is poorly organized we all gotta admit and I disagree the driver is the best.

Spacious and awesome boat. Commentary was good and the coffee machine was complimentary. Staff (particularly Adam) were friendly, and the skipper stopped at marine life he spotted along the way. We seen seals, penguins, dolphins and the falls.
Downsides: not sure why they didn't go out to the lighthouse when the other boat infront of us did and also another big boat our friends were on also did... plus weather conditions that day seemed fine.
The speakers were not clear out the front of the boat, and we were all having trouble understanding the information that we did want to know (but didn't want to have to stand inside to understand).
Other than these 2 things, it was awesome.

We went on the 1.45pm premium cruise and it was worth it! The location was already amazing, then you add a very comfortable catamaran you'll get a five star rating!! We also got buffet food, there were hit and miss so can't really say much about it. Highly recommend getting a close up photo under the waterfall. You will get soaked but it's such an awesome experience! Loved it!

Only paid 39NZD per person for a 2 hour cruise and was worth the price. The ferry was small but surprisingly had comfortable and spacious seating, and at the same time had an open top deck for best views. The cruise also came with bottomless tea and coffee as well, perfect for the cold outside. Overall a great experience. Consider taking a JUCY cruise if on a tight budget, it won't dissapoint.

Bought tickets in Queenstown and drove out to Milford Sound the following day. Thoroughly enjoyed everything here, the scenery is amazing and definitely an experience everyone should have on their bucket list. The Missus and I definitely plan on returning.
The ship itself is good, quite new and the interior is kept clean. Didn't try the toilets so can't comment on that. Food is limited to the basic canteen type stuff, I had a hotdog while Missus had a banana muffin. Decent food but nothing to write home about.
Tour of Milford Sound is great, commentary from the pilot (skipper?) and lots and lots of photo opportunities. You'll feel like a master photographer here, pretty much any photo looks postcard worthy (I'll control myself and only upload 4 here - took around 500 all up!).
Ship takes you to different points of interest around here, one of the final places they visit is the largest waterfall that is fueled by a melting glacier (a lot of the waterfalls around here are only fueled by rainfall so in dry times like when we went a lot of the other waterfalls are small or non-existent). The ship gets really close so those who want to brave getting wet can get wet at the front of the ship.
Definitely recommended.

Excellent cruise interior, staff were friendly and informative, Captain Callum was very welcoming and caring about the customers. He was not only driving the boat, but he also pointed out things we shouldn't miss out. We went on another Doubtful Sound cruise, hubby and I both agreed that Captain Callum was a much better commentator than that cruise captain.
Clean and neat, great complimentary hot drinks, good food options.
On top of all of these luxuries, we got to see seals, a penguin and a pack of dolphins.

Milford Sound or Piopiotahi, located in Fiordland National Park of New Zealand, is a popular tourist attraction that showcases towering cliffs, awe-inspiring glacial valleys, and roaring waterfalls. The natural wonder is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a haven for various wildlife species such as dolphins, seals, and penguins.
Breathtaking sights, so glad we took the trip.
The cruise we took offered by “Pure Milford” was amazing with clear commentary and wonderful friendly crew on board.
Leave 5 hours for the drive from Queenstown with only a maximum two quick stops due to road works and queues at the tunnel.
Recommend doing the stops for the remaining points of interest on the return journey to Te Anau.
A cruise or Kayak would be the best option to get up close to the majestic peaks and waterfalls.
Rainy day cruise will offer more waterfall sights. Dryer weather which we had only enables viewing of the permanent waterfalls and the temporary ones have just the glacial melting water. It’s beautiful either way

Milford Sound / Piopiotahi in South Island, New Zealand
Visited on 3/2/2019
It is really exciting to come to the highlight of the cruise - to cruise in the Milford Sound. The weather is perfect, plenty of sunshine shines onto the hill / cliff side.
Milford Sound was carved by glaciers during the ice ages. Some fjord'scliffs rise vertically up from the dark water. Some pyramidal hills protrude out of the water may have been formed by seismic activities of yesteryears.
The good thing about sailing in a big cruise ship is that whenever I feel like have fresh air, I can just walk out of enclosed room or hall to open air. When I feel like having some food to top up my energy level I can just go to the dining room, or some other "eateries".
Some photos attached appear blue is due my taking them from the meals area throught the tinted plate glass.
It is a sensational experience when the ship sails very slowly from the open sea to the narrow stretch of water. I wonder the colours of the foilage of ifferent plants would have different hue in autumn. I can imagine that will be a real bonus to the eyes.
The ship makes a U-turn after a couple of hours, and off to the open seas. About five hours later, the ships enters the Sound again.

One of the most beautiful place on earth. If it’s sunny that’s great. If it rained, then it’s even better as the entire fjord get waterfalls coming down from everywhere. Highly recommend going either for a kayak or a cruise so you can discover directly from the water.

The drive up was just as incredible.
We stopped off only at a few places on the way there as the time adds up & it’s better going earlier to beat the crowds.
On the way back the next day it was sunny & we got to witness the view in a whole new light and stopped off everywhere we didn’t the day before.

We all know this place is amazing. Here are a few things that we should know while visiting this place...
Plenty of Paid Parking is available at $25 for 5 hours.
Its a 10 minute walk from the car park to the cruise terminal. You can drive down all the way to the terminal if you have kids or elderly people but you can't park there.. only buses are allowed. Drop off others right outside the terminal and drive back to the car park and you do the walk yourself.
We booked with mitre peak cruise and only had complimentary coffee on board. No snacks... your only option for food/ snacks is at the Cafe near the car park/ information center. There are restrooms available both inside and outside the cafe/information center as well as in the cruise terminal.
There is a petrol pump/ servo for petrol and diesel.
This is one of those places where you would want it to rain before you visit... thousands of waterfalls come alive when it does! Get your hat, sunscreen and even a rain coat if you wish to get drenched under the waterfall when the cruise takes your right under one!

This fjord is breath taking. Crowded even at winter as all the tourists ( like me) want to go. The coach journey is long ...5 hours one way from Queenstown, our driver Scott was fantastic and knowledgeable...his last drive or close to that day before venturing on other things. Anyway...we had dolphins with the boat...some food on boat ...the waterfall was the highlight.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Milford Sound in New Zealand and it was an absolutely breathtaking experience! The scenery was stunning and truly awe-inspiring. The towering mountains, crystal clear water, and cascading waterfalls all around were simply incredible.
The boat tour was the perfect way to see everything up close and personal. Our guide was knowledgeable and informative, providing us with plenty of interesting facts and stories about the landscape and wildlife.
The highlight of the tour for me was definitely seeing the seal colony relaxing on the rocks. It was such a treat to get so close to these adorable creatures in their natural habitat.
Overall, I cannot recommend Milford Sound enough. It should be on everyone's bucket list when visiting New Zealand. The natural beauty of this place is simply unmatched and it truly is an unforgettable experience. Thank you for an incredible day!

Very nice scenery when taking the bus to the cruise ship even if it’s raining. Despite being gloomy, the rain allowed waterfalls to be more prominent, whereas if the weather was sunny no waterfalls will be present.
For those visiting for the first time, do prepare for a long bus ride, so I recommend wearing appropriate clothing for the weather. Also don’t forget your camera and snacks!

A must-see place at New Zealand that will just take your breath away.
I recommend to book your boat ride enough of time in advance, so you secure your place and don't stress out at the last minute. The boat ride takes about 2 hours and it's commented ride with a few stops at the waterfalls or the rocks with seals at the place.
Count with a long driving time to get to the place and then to get back. So if you travel from Queenstown, leave early in the morning.
There is a very lovely flower field on the way to the place/back that I recommend to stop at and take a few photos with the flowers. You will see a lot of people around, so you shouldn't miss the place.

If you’re happy to drive for about 1.5 hours from Te Anau and understand the weather may change (like the adult you are) then it’s one of the most beautiful places on the planet. The drive is also amazing so don’t know why you wouldn’t want to do it! We arrived in the morning about 9:30am so there were less people arriving on tour buses.
If you do your research before visiting you’ll know there’s a free car park about a 15 minute walk away from the cafe which is then about another 10 minute walk away from the cruise terminal. So no need to pay the $10/ph parking to be slightly closer.
There is only one café and the cruise terminal, but- as there should be! It’s a nature reserve, so doesn’t need 10 different cafés/shops.
The place itself is unlike anywhere I’ve been before. It’s beautiful, come rain or shine the scale of the landscape is so humbling. We arrived when it was covered in cloud which was burnt off by the midday sun so saw it in the sun too, both are awesome. It hadn’t rained for a while too and there are still massive waterfalls (some people think the rain produces all the waterfalls).
Ignore all the other reviews complaining about the amount of people and the price of parking they just didn’t research enough before going :)
P.S.- Take bug spray for the sandflies!

I'll never travel to Milford Sound without this trip planner again
Lake Te Anau is a stunning destination located south of Queenstown, just a two-hour bus ride away. It's an ideal place for a family getaway, offering opportunities for morning walks or jogs around the lake and plenty of facilities nearby such as supermarkets and restaurants. Visitors can take day trips to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound from here, both known for their spectacular scenery.
A beautiful lake where you can chill out with your family. I would suggest to stay here for 2 days, and make a day trip to Milford sound from here. Nice to have a morning walk or jog around the lake. Nearby are supermarket and restaurants where you can get your necessity and meals. There are cheap & good motels around this place, and you can spend quality time with your friends and family

We used Lake Te Anau as an overnight stop so that we could visit the Sounds. We left Queenstown early in the morning and arrived at Te Anau before lunch. It was a rainy day, so we decided to drive down to Milford Sound - even though it was torrential rain, it was worth the drive as the scenery was spectacular. We didn't get to see much of Milford itself though, as the weather prevented it. The next day was an amazing day trip to Doubtful Sound - well worth the trip.

The Te Anau Glowworm Caves, discovered in 1948, are a popular tourist destination for their unique glow worms. Visitors can take a boat to the caves and should dress warmly as the top deck can be chilly and windy. Inside the cave, visitors can marvel at features such as baby stalagmites and Eddie the eel while floating under the abundant glow worms. This experience is highly recommended for anyone visiting New Zealand as it is one of the most memorable experiences available.
A great excursion from beginning to end!
Wear a warm jacket so you can enjoy the top deck of the boat to the caves. It's windy and chilly up there, but so much fun.
The cave was awesome, and our guide did a great job of pointing out things like baby stalagmites and Eddie the eel.
Floating in darkness under the abundant glow worms was magical almost beyond description, so I won't even try. I'll just say that I've lived in NZ for over two years now, and that was one of the most memorable experiences.
Highly recommend the experience, and will definitely take any friends/family who visit!

We were unsure about this tour due to the weather, but our expectations were definitely exceeded.
The staff were really friendly and informative. The tour starts on a catamaran, then you dock on the other side of the lake (about 30 minute trip) followed by a debrief at a cosy hut (has a little shop and everything). Then you go in to the cave on foot over a walkway followed by a pitch black boat ride where you can only see the glow worms - amazing.
Everything felt very safe and at the end a free hot drink is provided.
If you are on the fence, I would recommend going on this tour, well worth it.

Highly recommend this tour. The boat ride across the lake was very comfortable. I was expecting a rough ride but it was quite smooth and we were warm and dry inside. The tour guides were friendly and informative. There were 72 of us but they take you in smaller groups of 12 so it’s quite intimate and you feel like you have the place to yourselves. The caves were amazing and they have walkways and lighting all the way. A really great setup. You can’t take photos inside but there were plenty of glow worms and the waterfalls were an added bonus.

A must do experience in Te Anau. The glowworm caves experience is far better than the Waitomo Caves, I would have to say. Smaller groups feel and real authentic cave experience, with a bit of back-bending to getting you started. The glowworms feel so close and the sound of the water rushing below your feet is really heart pumping! The guides are informative and funny.

The trip was very enjoyable, the safety presentation was very funny and the guide was very accommodating and answers our questions. No glow worm pictures as taking photos inside the cave was not allowed but it was a good policy so you get to enjoy the view and not to disturb the worms

I think this is a missed marketing opportunity since the focus is only on the glow worms, which are cool, but the cave was AWESOME! I love a good cave tour when traveling and this was a great one. The cave has an amazing underground river and huge waterfall, we even saw a giant eel! I would have loved a longer cave tour, if the option were available. Other than that, the glow worms were pretty cool to see, the guide was friendly, and even though on the boat ride over there is a huge number of people, they break you up into smaller groups which is nice. Don't book this tour if you're claustrophobic or can't bend/squat down very low. Otherwise, highly recommend!

An excellent experience that was well worth the money. Beautiful views across the lake during the short boat ride there. The cave system is really well done with a great walkway and is lit appropriately. The boat ride at the end of the accessible cave was incredible.
Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable which added to the experience.

Really great Tour! Highly recommend! RealNZ does a superb job! The 25 minute boat ride over to the caves was narrated and filled with great information about the area and the lake. The top deck afforded great views and lots of photo opportunities. Once at the caves, they broke the group into smaller groups of 10-12 to head into the caves. Information about the caves and the glow worms was provided before, during and after with plenty of time to ask questions. No photography is allowed inside the caves but I can attest that the inside of the caves looks just like the photos on the website.
Wear close-toed shoes (they are required) and bring a light rain jacket or wind breaker because it’s damp and drippy inside the caves.
Check out the “Specials” area on the RealNZ website to bundle tours together. We combined the Milford Sound cruise with the Glow Worm Tour and saved a bunch. It’s also worth noting that the Customer Service of RealNZ is top notch. We also used them for the Stewart Island Ferry and Kiwi Night Tour on Stewart Island and every aspect of every tour and encounter was exemplary.

Absolutely stunning experience, not to be missed, worth every dollar. I've seen glow worms before in Australia, but these were better 😄 (and I'm Aussie).
Heads up:
You can't take photos inside because the light from phones/cameras/ smart watches will ruin the atmosphere and not allow your eyes to see the glow worms. Don't be that person. 😅

Definitely recommended! The cruise to the glow worm caves are already good and the best part was the guided tour of the caves. Watch your head :) I would have loved to take photos but was advised not to by the guide.

Great experience! We took a smooth and stable boat ride to the cave, and the view from the deck was magnificent. At the cave, the guides were very helpful and knowledgeable. We were able to see the glow worms really upclose and they were magical. Of course don’t expect to see them as bright as the advertised in photographs with the naked eye.

We went in November and the boat ride over was BEAUTIFUL! We loved our tour guide Jess she was the absolute best! She was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and made our tour really fun!

A most enjoyable trip across from Te Anau, skipper Josie and commentator Zane made it interesting and fun. We were then taken into the cave by, I think, Sophie (?) who certainly knew her stuff. I've done a glowworm cave before in North Island but those were quite high up - from the 12-seater boat inside the cave the glowworms seemed very close indeed. Excitingly powerful waterfall, and Emma the Eel was there too. Our guide was very clear about no photos and being silent - it would have been so magical had a three-year-old(?) not kept jabbering. But that's what three-year-olds do, you can't stop them. I therefore think that the company should seriously consider age suitability, maybe a strong word or even edict - no under 5s? I would have been much happier without the very young children. Otherwise a much recommended trip.

It was a nice experience. The comfortable cruise had amazing views. The tour was educational and cool. We appreciated the coffee afterwards and a nice stroll in the area.

Really cool experience to see some glow worms and learn about them! We did the night tour so got great views going out of the sunset on Lake Te Anau and great views of the stars by the caves too

I hate tours, and this one was phenomenal! The boat ride alone is worth the fee. The hike into a spring cave was amazing. There were eels in the water that was well lit in order to see. The guide was perfect as he made the journey smooth and amusing. The glow worms just top the trip off. I never felt I was waiting around to leave or do something else, everything is timed impeccably!

What a wonderful experience! Just everything about it. The cruise over to the caves was beautiful, such lovely sights to see! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and the walk through the caves before hoping on the boat to the worms was magical. There could have been no worms at all (there were) and I wouldn't have even been upset. Seeing the worms in such darkness was so surreal. Definitely worth doing.

Amazing experience. We went for the 8pm tour in early January. The 25 min each way cruise alone would've been worth the admission - spectacular views before we even got to the glow worm caves. After a safety brief at the building on site, we went down into the caves - a short distance with a bit of ducking and crawling due to overhanging boulders. In small groups of 8-10 or so we boarded the boats to see the glow worms. Brilliant in the cool, dark cave. No photography allowed. With the whole group of around 40, it was organised well so minimal delays in and off the boats. Finally a presentation on glow worms with complimentary tea and coffee before boarding the boat back to Te Anau. Would recommend insect repellant for the short walk through foliage to get to the building and cave.
RealNZ - Doubtful Sound Manapouri Visitor Centre is a must-visit destination in Manapouri. The center offers boat tours to the stunning Doubtful Sound, providing an opportunity to witness diverse wildlife such as seals, penguins, and dolphins while crossing Lake Manapouri and Wilmot Pass. Visitors highly recommend the overnight cruise for a non-touristy experience with breathtaking views of Doubtful Sound from different angles of light without feeling rushed.
Absolutely stunning overnight trip in doubtful sound. The food was delicious and very plentiful ( Inc afternoon tea, buffet dinner with salmon, roast meat and mussels). The scenery took your breath away. We were lucky enough to see dolphins. Clean and comfortable room with hot shower and toilet.

Great and memorable day even in the rain! Doubtful Sound was magnificent. Boats were well equipped and comfortable. Friendly and knowledgeable staff - very informative. Coffee and cakes were very good. It can get quite cold out on deck (which is where you'll be to fully appreciate the experience) so wrap up waterproof and warm. Overall highly recommended.

Doubtful Sound is an incredible sculpted landscape. With little to no top soil, the wet conditions have provided a lush environment for moss and fungus, which in turn has allowed trees to take root, creating a delicate symbiotic relationship.
With 200 days of rain per year, we were fortunate enough to have clear skies and calm waters during our visit.
Travelling by bus from queenstown makes for a long and arduous journey. However, the trip is worth the effort.

What a wonderful trip, I'm SO glad we decided to take an extra day to do the overnight. The whole area was stunningly beautiful (I actually liked it better than Milford).
The transition from boat to bus to ship was seamless, and everyone involved was friendly and knowledgeable. The ship was great, our room (a double) was cozy and the bed was really comfortable. The food was excellent and they had a bar for drinks.
It was one of our favorite experiences in a month-long trip and we would definitely recommend it!

Can't speak highly enough of these guys. The whole trip was Awesome!
Ship was clean and comfortable and the crew were fantastic. Food was was delicious. On board bar with beer wine spirits and soft drinks.
At the very least do the day trip. But if time and budget permits do the overnight trip.

We had an incredible experience with Real NZ to doubtful sound! The boat across Lake Manapouri was lovely and scenic and the coach drive to the start of Doubtful Sound was informative and hilarious (Reynold was an absolute star!). The tour of Doubtful Sound itself was stunning and because of the size of the tour group, you never had an obstructed view. Definitely recommend this 100%!

Real NZ have outdone themselves. The Doubtful Sound cruise is the premiere NZ outdoor adventure. It blew my mind the beauty of the country I have lived in my whole life. From the Captain to the Crew on the Fiordland Navigator they showed nothing but class, kindness and a deep understanding of the area. I can not recommend this two day tour highly enough. Thank you so much! You have made a memory that will last a lifetime!

Really beautiful spot and realnz were great to deal with. Special mention must go to Tony the bus driver, he was knowledgeable and funny. His patter was the second best part of the trip, running a close second to the scenery

I don't know how this is not rated 5 stars by everyone. I've done the cruise three times-- two day cruises and one overnight cruise. If you can, do the overnight cruise. It gives you plenty of time to relax and the food is incredible. Very clean rooms and bathrooms too. Worth every penny. Dress extra warm so you can stay outside up on the top deck as much as you can to take in all of the views.
If you are wondering whether to do Milford or Doubtful, do Doubtful. If you can do both, then do Milford first as the Doubtful Sound experience will be hard to beat.

This was a nicely organised trip. Like much of NZ, you wonder how the trip ever got started. There is a hour's boat ride across a lake because that is the last bit of road. Then there is the best part of an hour on a surprisingly smooth gravel track in a hard working bus before you get to the trip on the Sound.
For us, this was an amazing contrast with the day before which had been continuous rain and heavily gusting wind on the Milford Sound which was an experience and a half.
The trip on the Doubtful Sound was blissful unspoilt scenery where every now and again another boat gave you the actual scale when your eyes deceived you.
The extra packed lunch provided was of good quality and filled any spare corners over a long day.
We only had a brief glimpse of dolphins and no other wildlife was in a cooperative mood.
Bonus mark for the boat, stable and although at capacity, there was plenty of room on deck for those who wanted without any jostling or aggravation. A nice touch was a quiet stop where the captain stopped the engines, the passengers were asked to be quiet, and everyone was well-behaved and enjoyed the sound of a waterfall and nothing else.
A great day out.

One of the best cruises we have ever done. Doubtful Sound on the Milford mariner overnight. The staff were friendly and Courtney very informative. Food great. Awesome views on 2 sunny days

We did the Doubtful Sound day trip with RealNZ. It us about an hour across lake manapouri and then another hour on the bus to Doubtful Sound (arrive about 12). Reception is lost pretty much by the time you start the bus trip so ensure you are ready to disconnect and enjoy. Bring lots of snacks as tea, coffee and water are the only things included and the snacks for sale are cash only. Lots of awesome information along the way but all of the guides could do with brushing up on their te reo pronunciation. If the water is still enough the skipper will take the boat out to where Doubtful meets the Tasman and you might get to see some seals!

Incredible. Just absolutely incredible. The whole day was magic, the weather was 10/10, hardly any wind, zero rain and the only boat on the sound! Wider, deeper and longer than Milford without 90% more people

Great overnight boat trip to Doubtful Sound. Check when booking if there are any large student groups travelling on the same day (we had 47) and adjust yr schedule accordingly. You can also ask which day staff are rostered to work til - 7 days on 7 days off - we went on day 7 - the poor staff were totally exhausted and interactions were few… except for the amazing Alaskan Hillary and Div the nature guide and the bus driver over the pass (Keith?Ken?) The 5 minutes Sounds of Silence drifting noiselessly on the morning waters was great except for the students who didn’t get it at all, clunking up and down the stairs, giggling, just being teenagers. Expensive but good experience.

Great experience. Very friendly, clean, and comfortable. Understandable that it costs a lot to run an operation out there, but at the price everyone could be provided a lunch and shouldn't have to pay extra. Again, otherwise amazing.

We did the day trip which was amazing. You start out with a boat ride followed up by a 45 minute bus ride where the bus driver is also a guide so the bus ride is also an experience. After the bus ride you have 3 amazing hours exploring Doubtful Sound. Since real NZ is the only operator here it is very calm and the surroundings feels untouched. We also managed to see some dolphins enjoying themselves! During these 3 hours you are able to move around the boat freely and space will free up during this time. So no need to sit in one spot for the entire trip. Overall an amazing experience which I recommend.

I highly recommend booking this cruise, it was one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand.
While the price can be intimidating, it's worth every penny, Doubtful Sound has A LOT to offer.
It was a fantastic experience - the boat was incredibly clean and cozy and the room was more spacious than I was expecting. The service provided by the entire crew was exceptional and saying the food was delicious would be an understatement.
Our first day was rainy, which was not a problem at all as we got to see so many rainfalls. The next morning it was bright and sunny and full of dolphins.

Fantastic day cruise. 7 hours means plenty of time exploring the area. 2 cruises and a bus trip makes a very full day. Much quieter than Milford Sound and more to explore. If you only have time for 1 cruise, I highly recommend this one. A very special experience.

Unreal experience at Doubtful Sound. We did Milford Sound the day before and actually enjoyed the whole RealNZ day-long experience more than the Milford tour. The staff was first class - the “MC” (can’t recall his name unfortunately… but believe he was originally from India?) on the RealNZ boat tour was excellent and same with the bus driver. Both were SUPER informative and did a fantastic job. Furthermore, the food and coffees onboard were great as well!

We had a brilliant tour on The Wanderer. We’d read a lot of reviews for the larger boat but since Real NZ moved the boat to Doubtful, very little. Rest assured it was a brilliant, more intimate experience with the staff and passengers really coming together and being friendly. Lots of space if you needed some alone time too. The food was incredible and catered for my vegetarian requirements easily. Good bar. Brilliant nature guide. Incredible scenery. Everything about the trip was smooth from the ferry to the coach to final boat. All the staff were friendly and happy to help.

The overnight Doubtful Sound cruise was 10/10. It really blew us away. Back in the UK we were skeptical of paying £400 each for the overnight and we originally booked the day cruise but as we travelled in NZ, we decided to switch to overnight when we got to Te Anau and we are so happy with that decision.
Firstly, it was so non-touristy. We were pretty much the only boat on the Fjord during the day, night and morning. It was so epic to see Doubtful Sound at so many angles of light, without being rushed. It felt like being in a long last paradise.
The boat was exceptionally, clean, delicious dinner and fantastic service from all the crew members who were clearly working really hard. Huge shoutout to Richard who is a fantastic Naturalist. It was awesome to do water activities too.
All RealNZ were super friendly and accommodating from the boat cruise, bus drive and beyond.
I honestly can’t recommend this enough! We also did the wanderer and it was great to be with a small group of 32.

It’s a great albeit long day tour. In my opinion there were too many people on the tour (approx. 100 or 3 coaches full), which meant a bit of a fight getting on or off boats or coaches, or finding a spot to take a photo. I find it quite painful being a (far too polite) person. This is tourism nowadays I guess?! However Doubtful Sound is stunning and in my opinion better than Milford Sound. The tour commentary was excellent and very informative with a good sense of humour, which made it so much better than the norm. I did get bitten by a lot of sand fly so take protection! It also gets very windy on deck so take some layers with you!!
