Great place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the Vinyard in quiet and peaceful surroundings. The units are modern, with great facilities and lots of room. Best bed that I have slept in in a long while. I have no hesitation in recommending the Weaver Estate accommodation.

We stayed here for 5 weeks after lockdown after a difficult time. It was perfect timing, lovely and private, warm on the chilly mornings. Great service too!

Tiny, family-run winery. Daughter is the wine maker. Beautiful tasting room & location. Pinot Noir (2011 in particular) and Pinot Noir Rosé wines are fantastic!

Bike It Now! in Clyde offers excellent service for those interested in the Lake Dunstan Cycle Trail. They can assist with arranging shuttle times and pickups for the reverse ride from Clyde to Cromwell, taking advantage of the wind and less aggressive egress. The trail offers beautiful views and cantilevered sections hugging the mountain. Riders can expect a time of around 3 hours and 20 minutes.
AMAZING service and professionalism at Bike It Now! We loved our trip on the Otago Rail Trail, and Bike it Now made everything so seamless and easy for us. The accommodation, local knowledge and of course the bikes were top quality. The door to door service from Queenstown was fantastic and meant transport was one less thing for us to worry about. They even worked around us when our flight was cancelled, and picked us up later in the day. I don't have anything bad to say. We will be booking through Bike it Now again for any future trips. Thanks so much!

We recently did the Big Loop with Bike It Now. Fully recommend this company. Easy communications prior to the ride. Accommodation was spot on for the needs of our group - six of us all over 60. Really enjoyed dining at country pubs and having a couple with the locals.
In addition, one of our group sustained an injury on the fourth day necessitating an evacuation. Bike It Now helped out with some of the logistics of this, meaning the injured rider was able to rejoin the group at each accommodation stop.
Many thanks Fletch and crew.

Rented ebikes for Dunstan rail trail. All organized with a single phone call - including bikes sent to Cromwell, and a return shuttle from Clyde back to start. Staff were informative and friendly. Bikes were newish Merida mtb style, with carrier luggage bag, helmet, drink bottle - ideal for the trail. Climbed the hills with no effort 👌
Totally recommend both the experience and the company.

Had such a great experience with the Bike it now team. Did the Roxburgh Gorge Trail. The jet boat ride was so much fun and Dave the driver is so knowledgeable. The bikes and gear was all in great condition and the briefing so professional. Definitely recommend this company

I had a great experience doing the Lake Dunstan cycle trail with Bike it Now. The mountain bike I hired was perfect for the trail, and fitted with everything I needed. The pre- departure talk was very informative and made me feel more confident about tackling the ride. I caught their shuttle to Cromwell and gained a lot of local knowledge along the way from John the driver. The trail is great.

A huge thanks to Fletch and everyone else at Bike It Now for organising our ride on the Otago Rail Trail at the end of last month. We had the most amazing time and everything went flawlessly. We did the 5-day luxury tour and stayed in beautiful accommodation, enjoyed all our meals, and met some lovely people - highly recommended! I'm already looking at what ride we will do next.

Quick and easy service for hiring an ebike for the Lake Dunstan cycle trail. Trail was explained and we were given a map before heading out. Shuttle driver even explained a couple of things on the way to Cromwell. Had no issues with the bike and it was nice that saddle bags and tyre pump were provided.

Absolutely Fabulous Clyde Folk and Adventure. River trail ride gorgeous. Help was at hand when I piked out at Alexandra. Shuttled back to town, pride intact, accomplished a 12 km breathtaking ride.

Bike it Now is amazing. They organise everything for you and all you need to do is ride and enjoy the scenery and great hospitality along the way. It’s the second time I’ve been with them and couldn’t fault them. They know the area and tailor the trip to what you want to do. Just perfect!!!

Re: The Lake Dunstan Cycle Trail. Interested in doing the reverse ride, Clyde > Cromwell, Bike It Now will assist. Apart from working with your schedule an advantage is the wind is behind you and the egress to the Trig Station is not as aggressive from the Clyde, you also " hug " the mountain on those cantilevered sections . Time for an L3 rider is < > 3H20m. Book with Bike It Now to arrange shuttle times & pickup back to Clyde. Recommended time would be early morning ( Still and no opposing traffic ) . Service & communication from Bike It Now Clyde is outstanding..thoroughly recommended.

Super, super organised! Thank-you Bikeitnow! for an amazing 4 day adventure. Shuttle service from Queenstown, terrific accommodations, recommended places to eat and where to purchase snacks. When the weather turned nasty on Day 4, they checked-in with us to see if we needed assistance. (We were fine). We are happy to recommend Bikeitnow!

BIG THANKS TO THE TEAM AT CLYDE FOR EXCELLENT SERVICE AND THE BEST BIKES AVAILABLE.. was a windy day but everything went well beautiful track and views with lunch available on track. Thanks again.
Mt Difficulty wines is a beautiful, bucolic winery located in one of Central Otago's most stunning locations. The restaurant and tasting bar offers wine samples for wine lovers to enjoy, and the scenery from the property is simply breathtaking. The staff are friendly and informative, and the food is delicious and well-priced. If you're looking for a relaxing weekend getaway with great wine experiences, Mt Difficulty should be at the top of your list!
The long walk up is worth it. Stunning location. We had wine tasting with a lovely and informative staff member and it was really busy but never felt ignored. Really lovely wine and a great place just to have a glass. Would love to try the food. Would recommend!

Me and my partner did the premium wine tasting this morning and got quite disappointed.
The person that serve us was very formal and for some reason ignored my partner and only made eye contact with me. It was quite uncomfortable for both of us that's she did not even acknowledge his presence.
We had our tasting in the reception room where all the restaurant guests are welcome so it feels like being on a hallway.
Overall it was not the expectation we had for Mount Difficulty Cellar room but was way beyond unfortunately.
On the side of it, the wine tasting was good.

We drove a long way from Queenstown here for lunch and wine tasting. Food and wine are fantastic, I give full mark. But the whole experience was very unwelcoming. The person in charge (not sure if she was the duty manager Claire?) immediately turned us down when we arrived saying there was definitely no indoor seat today, all are reserved. We fully understand and tried to take the seat outdoor. But it was too windy for my kids. Then I went to ask again if we can queue for the indoor seat. The other male staff said OK. But the lady in charge asked us to stay outside as she declared that there is no space inside the restaurant. Fine! After queuing for around 30mins, we finally got the indoor seat. During this waiting time, there were at least two indoor tables remained untaken, and these two tables remained untaken throughout the time we were having our meals. This is the so called “all reserved”???
The worst thing happened during the time we are having the meals. We offered our kids phones with minimum sound from the phone. There were two staff came to ask us to reduce the volume of the phone. The fact is the whole restaurant is full of laughters, loud talkings. The table next to us cannot hear the sound from our phone at all, why the staff are so particular to us???
By the way, i still have to say thank you to the lady in charge who brought back my bag left behind as we went for post meal wine tasting. That was sweet.
Owner of Mt Difficulty Wines, if you are not welcoming tourists (especially from Asia), and if you are not welcoming kids, please declare it, we will definitely help share in our public platform and let more people know about this. Otherwise, train your staff well in terms of basic service standard. Don’t let them ruin the beautiful wine and food and your reputation!

We headed to mt difficulty en route to queenstown from wanaka. We opted for one of the wine tasting experiences and lunch. All of the food was excellent - delicious and presented beautifully- we opted for the Camembert starter on special, followed by pasta, salmon and brownie. All of which tasted wonderful. The wine was also delicious. It might have been nicer to have them served in wine glasses rather tumblers- but that is just my personal preference.
However, we found the servers to be a little cold and unwelcoming. Offering some wine suggestions or just having a chat would have made them more approachable/ friendly.

We LOVED the experience !
The winery tasting was lovely. COLLIN was AMAZING, really informative and smiling all the time. I can tell she loves what she does.
The food was excellent.
I am from Spain and when I was eating the muscles, I had a flaixback of my old times in France with my family eating muscles.
Thank you over all for such a lovely experience.
I hope that I can come soon.

Our recent visit to Mt. Difficulty Winery was nothing short of a remarkable experience. We had recently met Marcus and it was a great recommendation.
From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm hospitality,, the staff played an instrumental role in making our visit extraordinary.
The winery's setting is breathtaking, with expansive, picturesque views that set the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable day. We couldn't help but admire the beauty of Central Otago as we savored our meal.
Speaking of the meal, it was a culinary delight. The star of the show was undoubtedly the amazing eye fillet. Cooked to perfection, it was tender, succulent, and bursting with flavor. Paired with a glass of their finest wine, it was a match made in culinary heaven.
We also indulged in a plate of delicious fresh olives, which were a delightful prelude to the main course. The olives were perfectly seasoned and served as a fantastic appetizer while we enjoyed the stunning surroundings.
One more highlight of our meal was the gnocchi. It was a bowl of pure comfort food, with each bite being a burst of flavor and texture. It was evident that the chefs at Mt. Difficulty put a lot of care and expertise into their dishes.
What truly sets this winery apart, though, is the combination of exceptional food and wine with those awe-inspiring views. It's a place where you can truly relax and savor not just the flavors of the cuisine but also the beauty of the land.
In conclusion, our visit to Mt. Difficulty Winery was an experience we'll cherish forever. Marcus's recommendations, the amazing eye fillet, delicious fresh olives, and delightful gnocchi, all enjoyed against the backdrop of those expansive, beautiful views, created a day that was nothing short of perfection. If you're in Central Otago, this winery is an absolute must-visit. We're already planning our return!

The driveway up to the Mt. Difficulty Winery is worthy of its name. After a wine tasting at the bar, we had a most delicious lunch. It was November, unfortunately, so we were unable to eat outside to enjoy the beautiful view. My husband had the duck, while I had the salmon accompanied by a farro and fennel salad with a miso and dill dressing. The salmon was excellent, but the salad was the star on the plate. A thoroughly delightful meal. (And we love the logo!)

A wonderful winery with a great selection and lovely staff. We were en route from Lake Tekapo and running a tad late. They let us move back our reservation, encouraged us to relax and enjoy our wines upon arrival, and stayed open an extra thirty minutes for us to finish. We were so thankful and we will never forget the lovely service. A must visit in Otago NZ.

Lovely impromptu stop on the way to Queenstown, the women at the front of the restaurant were so friendly and tailored a tasting for us as soon as we mentioned a preference for sweeter wines. Served us a few more drinks and a cheeseboard even though it was only 30 minutes till closing time. View is amazing. Highly recommend stopping in!

Singaporean here, in response to an earlier review by a fellow Singaporean. We ate at the restaurant and did not visit the cellar door. My family had a very delightful experience here and the staff was super friendly to us the entire time!
The photos posted by other reviewers do not do the restaurant any justice. The restaurant is situated at the top of a mountain, it is very nice and windy on a sunny day and has a great view of the surrounding area.
The food is on point, you have to try Panna Cotta. If you’re a fan of sweet wines, the sweet wine sampling plate here for $20 was amazing.
Super underrated place. Call and reserve a seat at the restaurant beforehand if you’re going at peak hours!

We enjoyed delicious food and great wines while enjoying stunning views at the winery restaurant on the hill. Mt Difficulty's wines are highly praised in Japan, and it was great to be able to have them at the winery.
We had Riesling, Pinot-gris, and Pinot-noir. Of course, all of them were unique and delicious.

We were really looking forward to our lunch here, as we had enjoyed Mt. Difficulty wines at our home in the US. We arrived just before noon for our lunch reservation, and were asked if we wanted to do a tasting first. That sounded like a great idea, so we proceeded to take a barrel on the terrace. We're not sure what we said or did, but the young man pouring wines for us seemed to have a dislike for us. Minimal time was spent with us, and we seemed rushed through the tasting. I understand that we had agreed to relinquish our table 90 minutes after the reservation time, thus, we did not plan on having desserts. We were given no option on a table for lunch, but placed at one in the sun. We made the best of it, moving it slightly backwards (nearer an empty table) to gain a small bit of shade. Service at first was fine, but then there was a very long delay between our starter and mains. We were never checked on during our meal. We had the salmon and duck mains, and as another reviewer noted, the farro salad accompanying the salmon was the star of the whole meal.

Was able to get an early lunch booking when I rang ahead on the day. All staff were extremely professional, friendly and knowledgeable. The platter we got for the 2 of us was beyond our expectation, we had to leave a few bites behind we were full! Everything on it was delicious. The pilot noir taster was great and very helpful with all the notes. I bought one of the wines I'd tasted and will save it for a special occasion!
I then did some additional wine tasting with Markis and he was very personable and helpful.
A great stop on our road trip.

Mt Difficulty Winery in New Zealand offers a fantastic experience, highlighted by their delicious Target Gully Pinot Noir. The host, a knowledgeable New Zealand lady with long hair, was exceptional, serving as a great bartender and sharing valuable insights about the wines. A must-visit for wine enthusiasts.

Fantastic wine tasting experience with a breath taking view! Our host, Michael is so friendly and he gave us a very detail introduction to the wines.
Boutique winery specializing in pinot noir with a large cave & restaurant offering tours & tastings.
The Gnocchi were seriously delicious, with a very fresh and interesting taste. I wish the portion size was bigger, as I didn’t want it to end! Our french server was absolutely lovely, he was kind and funny and made sure we always had a great glass of wine the whole time we were there.
Hopefully we‘ll be back for more, as I would love to go on a tour of the barrel hall!

Awesome platter of food which was easily big enough to feed 2 of us for lunch. Wine tasting was great too, especially liked that they had a few different wine tasting menus to choose from so you could choose all white wine if you wanted. Service was great too!

The winery inside and outside is lovely. The wine cave is very interesting. The wine guide was lovely and informative. Her narrative on the vineyard, winery, and wines was brilliant. The wines are tasty 😋. Located close to Queenstown. Would suggest booking a wine tour then you don't have to drive.
Leanna Marsh — Google review
I understand that your vineyard very famous and busy but today the service was horrible. We ask question for the wine testing regarding the difference of the wine and the guy said most of them are same then he call us to take menu and have a seat to decide, there is red wine, white wine and rose wine, are all of them are the same? I don’t think so.
It’s obvious that I need assistance and suggestion for the wine but end up that is no help at all. What kind of service is this? Are you guys mainly just open for tourism? I been here for a year and this is the worst wine testing I ever had.
I hope you guys provide more patient on the service in explaining and servicing.

We stopped at the restaurant as part of bike ride of the Gibbston Valley . It has great presence with a cheese tasting and cellar door as well as the restaurant . Warm welcome by the team . We sat outside in the courtyard in full sunshine enjoyed the Pinot gris . We ordered the lamb and triple fried potatoes and veges to share the lamb fell to bits it was cooked to perfection and tasted as good as it looked the potatoes crispy and served with a lite sour cream were fab and fresh veges . We felt like we had enjoyed the best meal in the district 😀 Totally recommend

Had been here before but had the best experience when I came a few months back and was served by the hilarious and lovely Jolie. Very witty, knowledgeable and kind - knows her stuff and is super welcoming and warm. After having an awesome wine tour with her I came back a few weeks later to do a tasting with her again in the cellar door. Amazing cheese boards and also the staff in the restaurant were very warm and accommodating too. Great place and vibe, one of the best wineries in queenstown!

I had a fantastic tasting and lunch here. The wine tasting I had booked online but was able to walk in earlier since they were not too busy. A lovely staff member told me about the different wines and gave me time to enjoy each of them. The lunch was delicious and the portions were generous! Meals were definitely on the pricier side but the quality was very good. (Due to the way of nature which is outside of our control, there were lots of flies and birds around the patio which was a bit annoying)

Would not recommend this winery. Sure, the wines are good, but if you visit a winery with a cellar door in Gibbston Valley, you’re bound to have good wines. If, like me, you’re looking for a winery where you’ll have a good experience in addition to good wines, go elsewhere. Trying to learn about the wines, their vintages, and the region was like pulling teeth, and the whole experience was stuffy. Their selling point is being the first stop on the wine track from Queenstown, but I’d recommend putting in the extra 20 minutes and heading somewhere else like Mt Rosa or Brennan.
Erica Morgan — Google review
We did a wine tasting at the bar. We did not enjoy the wines as much as we had at other places; you are also left to read the descriptions of each wine on a card rather than have a member of staff talk you through them. Not bad but not as great an experience as offered elsewhere.
Do pop into the cheese store while you are there and sample their range of tasty cheeses.
NSLondon — Google review
Do not recommend, very unprofessional. Went there with my American girlfriend, we ordered 2 different wine tastings, the wine server didn’t even make eye contact with me at all during her explanation of the wines, very rude behavior. Waste of money, do not visit this place. I am hoping it was not because I am from India that she avoided me.

Wine is okay, you'll find much better in this beautiful region. Would not recommend coming for lunch, portions are very small for the price and it took two hours for us to receive our lunch. Food was also very average, with the steak being overcooked. Upon paying they did not remove the $160 deposit we paid for the table from our bill. The winery itself is beautiful and the server we had was lovely but overall I would not recommend.

My wife and I visited the Gibbston Valley winery this Easter weekend for the wine cave tour. We didn’t realise that they don’t sell alcohol during Easter.
Fortunately the tour included 3 tastings which cost $25 a head. It’s a great little winery.

Highlands - Experience the Exceptional is a tourist attraction that offers a variety of driving experiences, including go-karts and fast taxis. Additionally, visitors can view sculptures and explore a sports car museum while taking in stunning mountain vistas. A family pass priced at $199 provides access to the aforementioned activities as well as a VR experience, but additional carts must be purchased for larger groups. The facility boasts an impressive cafe with great lunch options, while the toilets themselves are worth visiting.
Amazing. Brilliant day. Did the Fast Dash & it's brilliant.
Next was the go carts & that was also brilliant.
One could spend all day & a lot of coin & definitely not be disappointed!

The experience was fantastic! Did the U-Drive Mustang and had an ball of a time. Instructor was fantastic and clear with the guidance and encouragement to push myself in the car! Then headed to the Karts and they are fun and fast. Kart track is a good size and good level of difficulty. Ended up having lunch and had a Lamb sandwich which was really nice with a Berry smoothie. Then went though the Museum which was really well laid out with heaps of info about cars on display. Has upstairs area with a lot of history and info about drivers in Nee Zealand. I would recommend you make it a must stop if you enjoy Cars! Also worth saying to head to the loo with a view as well.

Booked in for the radical U-drive. Was everything a person who loves Formula 1 could ask for. 7 Laps is not enough! The Heritage Precinct museum in New Zealand showcases restored buildings from the Gold Rush era of the 1860s, which now house shops and cafes. It offers a chance to reflect on early European history while exploring horse stables and enjoying picnics near Lake Dunstan's seating areas. There are vintage equipment displays, bakeries, and life-sized mannequins that add to the experience. The spot is also ideal for food and drinks with a stunning view of the lake.
Free entry. Very cute restored old town. Lots of history kept for all time. And the view of the lake is so amazingly stunning. It’s hard to believe once upon a time the level was much lower and the town filled the water up!

Nice place for a look through with old shops and period history displays.
I visited during new years holiday time and most of the shops were shut till the 4th Jan.
Close to the river with stunning views of the cliffs on the opposing side.
Well kept walkway and plenty to look at.
Bicycle hireage and small jet for kayaks or boats.
Close by is some heritage homes and old churches in the close by streets.
Well worth the stop and will revisit again.

This was a great place to see and was very well done.
There are a lot of historic buildings and old objects.
There are a few shops and galleries.
It's definitely worth visiting if you're in Cromwell!

Nice area where old heritage buildings have been amassed together, renovated and repurposed, i.e. cafes, art galleries, shops.
It is in a lovely setting alongside the water and was a peaceful place to enjoy on the day we visited.
In addition to looking at the buildings there are also walking and biking tracks that can be accessed from here.

Always an excellent spot to grab some food and beverages. Get down early and watch the sun climb into that azure big sky and the place come to life.

The Heritage Precinct of Cromwell town is an interesting place. It showcase the old buildings of the gold mining era. These old buildings were converted into souvenir shops and cafes. Located by the scenic lake side which is another attraction. Worth visiting.

Beautiful old buildings, although not all original. Some refurbished / recreated from elsewhere in the district. Some interesting history inside a few of them. Not a huge area so doesn't take long to go round. Love the stonework more than anything.

This place is fantastic to hike around and see the restored buildings. Most eateries here are cafe's.
Good place for photos on the shore line.

One of the most beautiful place in the Cromwell. It's a tranquility place to enjoy the view of the lake and to the cycling. People can use the free BBQ Machine donated by Lions Club. Massive thanks for them. 👍

What a lovely setting and most interesting! The buildings have been moved from their original places and restored and repurposed into mini museums, cafe, art galleries and gift shops. Well worth a visit.

During our journey back to Christchurch from Wanaka, we made a brief stop in Cromwell. With few locals around, the atmosphere was tranquil and serene. The partially demolished dance halls and schools, blended seamlessly with other heritage buildings. Although the shops were closed, I anticipate a vibrant atmosphere when they're open. My colleague also recommended the excellent bike trails in Cromwell, perhaps something to explore on our next visit!

Arrowtown, a charming historic gold mining town in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island, is nestled on the banks of the Arrow River, just a short 20-minute drive from Queenstown. This picturesque settlement offers a delightful culinary scene, with Postmasters serving an array of delectable treats from tea and scones to burgers and beers, complemented by Switch Espresso.
The Historic Arrowtown Chinese Settlement is a restored village from the 1880s, showcasing the rustic huts and way of life of Chinese gold miners. The village offers interpretive signs that provide insight into their culture and work. Beyond the settlement, visitors can embark on breathtaking walks amidst a seemingly remote area despite being only moments away from town central. In addition to its historical significance, Arrowtown boasts an array of charming cafes and unique shops.
A beautiful place to visit or even live if you can find a house.
Lots of lovely cafes and interesting shops.
Bus fare from queenstown to arrow town only $2.00 super cheap

There is a cafe and not much to see. This leads to a few track. I heard that the start point gets flooded with water but you are able to easily walk across. There are few tracks that you can choose to complete depending on the time you have. We completed a 45min track. Recommend to wear track shoes as some paths are slippery.

Small but interesting place to visit. It's free and only takes around 40 minutes to go round (at a leisurely pace). Gives a good description of the lives and work of Chinese miners looking for gold and the conditions they faced. Afterwards, for contrast, pop into the main part of Arrowtown for some interesting shops.
Chris Thorley — Google review
The main street of Arrowtown was a little too touristy/giftshoppy for my taste. The Chinese settlement was eye opening, interesting, sad and inspiring. Information boards throughout explained the history of the Chinese settlers in this part of New Zealand. The structures added impact. It was also a much more peaceful, tranquil area compared to main street. Like many places we found in New Zealand, if you stop and listen the woods are alive with beautiful bird songs. Fascinating stuff.

An interesting & informative site. Actual dwellings still remain & you can walk around at leisure & enter the homes of Chinese immigrant gold miners from yesteryear. It's free to enter & a pleasant stroll from Arrowtown alongside the river.

Not much to do here but a quick stop to see how the settlers endured their stay here in NZ during times of the gold rush. Free parking and toilet facilities available. Plenty of information to read if you have time to follow the trail explaining the history of the place.

The Historic Chinese settlement is only a short walk from the main street of Arrowtown. It started in the 1860s when gold was discovered.
Today you can visit some original houses and two shops. You can also see where the market garden was.
It is a very picturesque area along the Arrow River and there are many shady trees.
There are information boards along the settlement to give you a lot of information.
The backdrop to the settlement are snow covered mountains.
I would definitely recommend visiting the Chinese Historic settlement in Arrowtown.
Leanne (Beach Travel Wine Podcast) — Google review
Very nicely done and really emotional reading the stories of how the Chinese were treated. Enticed here to rework the mines that the white men couldn't be bothered with and then treated like dogs.

The Chinese Settlement in Arrowtown may not be large, but it's an incredibly interesting spot to explore. Visiting during autumn adds an extra layer of beauty with the colorful foliage. The site is well-maintained and offers a glimpse into the history of the area. It's a charming and tidy place that's definitely worth a visit for its historical significance and scenic appeal.

Great free experience to visit! Lots of signs to explain things, and most houses/buildings you can have a look inside.
The Lakes District Museum & Gallery is a fascinating museum with exhibits on the local history, particularly on gold mining. In addition to this, it also boasts an art gallery. The displays are beautifully presented and provide an interesting glimpse into the past of the area. Visitors can even try their hand at gold panning in the nearby river. The museum offers a fun game for kids to play while exploring exhibits and has a quirky touch with its old-fashioned toilet.
Beautifully presented museum showing a glimpse back at local history. Very interesting!

If you want to know about the area, this is the place to go. They have really great archivists working there who are exceptionally helpful. They have an amazing display with the museum part, which one can view for a small fee. The art gallery is always brilliant. Whilst there this time, there was a lot of local art, and it was superb. The books and gifts that are available to purchase are of great array. A truly wonderful place to visit. Give yourself at least two to three hours for your visit. You will not regret it

I was excited to visit this museum after reading a local guide brochure. It lived up to the review too. I loved this entire town. Allow at least 3 hours as we ended up leaving earlier than we wanted to unfortunately after 2 hours. The displays were well set out and very informative. The history was an amazing read. Downstairs was mind blowing in particular with real life displays set out accompanied with well written information boards. Don't miss this one!

Very fun museum, lots of information in there and it will take you longer than you think to go through it all. Be aware that going on a weekday you may run into a school trip and the space is a bit on the smaller side so it can feel a bit busy in there. Otherwise it's definitely worth a visit.

This an awesome history museum with a vast collection of items and information. .There are items inside and out. They also have art exhibits in the galley. Friendly staff and reasonably priced. A very nice visit for all ages.
Arrow River is a serene and picturesque destination, especially during the autumn season when the forest surrounding it transforms into a vibrant display of colors. The best time to visit is late April, allowing for ample time spent exploring the town and hiking along the river. This area is great for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy activities such as skipping rocks, swimming, trail running or simply admiring its beauty. Additionally, nearby Arrowtown offers more opportunities to explore this dog-friendly region.

What a difference experience it is to go up here when it’s the summer weather. We decide to hike it and soak up all the experiences this place has to offer under the beautiful sun. We climbed right up to the summit.
What a beautiful place with such an amazing view, worth a go 🤩👍

A wonderful ski resort with a great range of slopes to suit all skill levels.
Supporting elements are also exceptional for the region, with a cafe, restaurant, fully stocked ski shop (and I mean fully stocked), accommodation on site, another restaurant, equipment hire and easy transport to local towns.
Honestly, just go here. It’s great.

It was an amazing experience playing mountain carting with families and friends out of ski season here. The 2 hours downhill with the carting is exciting and friendly to kids, the cart is easy to manipulate, it allows parents sitting with kids under 8 in one cart, or leave anyone over 8 to play himself, it looks scary at the beginning, once you try the longest trail once, you will start enjoying it.

Went up for a look around on a lovely sunny day 🌅🏔️, be prepared for a steep hill climb and a bumpy ride as it a long Windy road to the top , but definitely worth it as the veiws are pretty spectacular ! You can walk up the track to the top or take the gondola 🚠 we walked the track as it's pretty easy and not steep 😉

Mountain biking here was great. My first time at a mountain bike park but was a great experience. Rented all the gear and bought lift passes for the day. I would recommend the full day passes as you can build up to the other routes like we did if you're novice!

Still the best ski mountain in the south. Wide open spaces and terrain for all levels.
Get up there early though and save yourself some coin by buying your pass on line before you venture up the hill.

Awesome slopes with fantastic views! The service was remarkable -- we had to change our plans at the last minute due to illness, and Cardrona was very flexible to change our ski day with a lesson and they handled it without any problems! Highly recommend the beginner package, the instructor (Oscar) was knowledgeable, funny and made sure everyone felt good throughout the lesson.
Juho Leinonen — Google review
It was my first time on the slopes, and being summer, I did Cardrona mountain carting, and it was an awesome experience.
The drive up can be a bit unnerving. For newcomers it could do with a preparation track before hitting the 3 main tracks. "Skyline" is meant to be an introduction/ beginner track but from all three tracks I found it to have the fastest acceleration points.
Would love to do it again if I had a chance. You don't get opportunities to take photos on the track which is a downer.

Nice skiing with an big range of runs to choose from, lots of lifts and more than enough runs. A few cool small terrain parks and some gaint ones. Watching people doing big jumps is fun too. We came in not the very best of snow seasons and even though there was not enough snow for half of the runs we still had an absolute blast. Next time we"LL stay in Wanaka and try out treble cone too. So much fun.

Great first timer experience with brilliant instructors in lessons across the two days. Crowded both days simply due to great weather and being post covid.
Plenty of resources from the shop, rental, accommodation, storage lockers and food.
The food options up on the slopes are ridiculously overpriced though so pack some food and drink from home.

Absolutely fantastic ski resort. Entire family loved it. Every little and big thing was perfect. The staff was especially helpful. They/them helped us with everything we needed. When I got completely black out drunk before going skiing they/them were kind enough to carry me back to my room.

We requested refund as the ski field was closed due to windy weather. We arrived at Cardrona shop at Queenstown and waited for almost 2 hours for anyone could assist. Two staff members in the shop, only one was the manager could possess the refund. However she spent one hour with a family and ignore all the others queueing up in the room. Very poor service, no insight about priority.
Katie Mitchell — Google review
Fun to ski, but 30 minute queues ruin it and suggest; i) crowd / mountain mismanagement, ii) profits over guest experience, and/or iii) complete unawareness.
Waiting in queues for hours takes the gloss off of an expensive leisure activity or even the best conditions. Mountain managers could also do a much better job of communicating to crowds basic information like ETAs for opening, delays and making sure the chairs are always packed at capacity. Ski schools and alpine racing teams get preference at the expense of the general crowd creating an unfair experience.
Unlike any other alpine environment I’ve been in, in terms of delays. Disappointed because the mountain has said it was improving this issue this year, but mountain management doesn’t match what’s on the tin...
E Cotton — Google review
Skiing will always be fun but the facilities don't match the resort capacity. Seating areas are massively over subscribed so feels very crowded and difficult to find somewhere to sit for a quick lunch. Facilities at main base also don't take advantage of the great views!
They also seem to experience more problems with the chairlifts than I've been aware of at other resorts too so may need updating but I'm no expert.

We took snowboarding lessons at Cardrona and loved it. We have also taken a lesson in Colorado and I preferred the learning area at Cardrona as it is such a gradual slope and you can use the magic carpet instead of a lift. We got so many more practice runs in this way and made some good progress. Our instructor Renee was so easy going to patient and did a great job giving everyone in our group individual instruction. Not sure how the actual slopes are as we just stayed in the beginner area. Rental equipment was in great condition and affordable. Would definitely come back in the future.
Amanda Edgar — Google review
Recently my family and I spent a few days up the mountain at Cardrona. Mountain was average (as expected at this time of year) but they still managed to keep a good number of runs at all levels open. Staff were absolutely awesome. Absolutely interested in people skiing/boarding and did their best to make it happen. Kieran at the front desk was super helpful and made sure all our tickets and lessons were sorted. When the weather looked poor he made sure we'd be able to get back on a good weather day. Totally enhanced our experience and ensured we'll be back again.

An expansive ski resort with all the trappings— restaurants, bars, shops... the slopes are all well maintained and the massive crowds spread out. I think this is New Zealand's largest and busiest ski resort. I personally much prefer the ski clubs like Ohau, but thought I would come check this place out. There are a couple of really long runs— you'll think your at Whistler or Chamonix. The noodle bar upstairs is fantastic.

I spent $530 on a two person tour back in August 2022. Underdog cancelled due to weather and which was of our control. I was informed I will be able to obtain a refund. 6 months later, I’ve emailed & called multiple times. No answer and have been ignored.. If I could go back in time I would never have booked with this company. If you do, you will run the risk of loosing $530. I cannot believe a company like this is happy to take your money, not deliver a service and continue to book tours with other people. BEWARE and RE CONSIDER!!!!!

This is a comprehensive collection of almost every type of transport you can think of. Some displays have good explanation and/or background stories but most have very little other than the model etc. Cafe was nonexistent but the store itself was full of models to suit everyone.
There's a brewery next door with a great selection of beer but they only serve pizza if you're looking for lunch as well.

I came across the museum as I was leaving Wanaka and I had a bit of time to spare so I thought I'd quickly pop in to look around. I landed up staying for more than 2 hours, and I didn't even get to see everything! This place is absolutely wonderful and I'd recommend it to anyone who is in the Wanaka area. The museum has an incredible amount of pieces on display, and there is definitely something for everyone here. Looking through the toys was a wonderful trip down memory lane. The displays have been put together very well, and it's incredible to see the some of the old toys in such a good state. It is really the best collection of vehicles and planes I have seen in New Zealand. There are an in fathomable amount of vehicles. Enough that my father could find each one of his old family cars!
I would recommend closer to 4 hours as it will give you an hour per building. There are also a few things to be seen out the back as well as in the yard.
Before in the store as it is best toy store you would of seen in a while, large collections of lego, plastic model, die cast models, dolls, Sylvanian family and more.

A well-liked round trip to a peak formed by ice, featuring extensive vistas of lakes and mountains. The Mount Iron Track is a circular hike that takes visitors through scenic landscapes with views that stretch far into the distance. This trail leads to a summit that was shaped by glaciers long ago, making it an interesting geological site as well as an enjoyable hiking destination. With its stunning scenery and challenging terrain, the Mount Iron Track is a must-visit for anyone seeking outdoor adventure in this area.
Diamond Lake and Rocky Mountain walks are conveniently located just a short drive from Wanaka. These walks offer various options for exploration, ranging from 30-minute lower level circuits to longer upper level circuits. The shorter walk provides stunning views of Lake Wanaka, while the longer route offers breathtaking vistas of the Southern Alps and Mount Aspiring National Park. Both walks are relatively easy and can be completed in a few hours, making them ideal for visitors looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area.
To reach Lake Wanaka, take a detour from State Highway 8A and State Highway 6 (northbound) after passing through Tarras. The lake is one of New Zealand's largest and is surrounded by the mountains of Mt. Aspiring National Park. Wanaka town on the southern shore provides easy access to lake-based activities like paddleboarding, kayaking, boating, swimming in summer months and skiing during winter seasons.
Beautiful lake. It’s so wide; so just walking around it will take a while, but there won’t be any bad view. You can also see the famous Wanaka Tree, though it’s not that spectacular, in my opinion. But we saw it at low tide.

A highlight of the town and a nice place for walking around. I appreciated that there were so many nice public toilets, especially in the part that touches the town. It just means that anyone can really spend a long time at the lake and chill there.

Fantastic getaway. Enjoyed walking along the track on the lakefront.

A nice lake beside a small town. Water is clear and quite calm, you can go swimming in the lake near the town area. Walk about 20minutes further from the main town area and you can see #ThatWanakaTree

Beautiful lake with incredible views from every angle. We had mostly sunny conditions with just a few clouds, and the lighting was amazing for hours. If you want to add a walk to your visit, it may be best to stick to the beach instead of walking on the Waterfall trail. There were a lot of bikers enjoying the weather, so we found that the beach allowed our group to stick to a slower pace.

Lake Wanaka is different from other lakes as it's quite irregular in shape, making it utmost beautiful in every place around Wanaka. You can have totally different feels when driving along SH6, sitting on the jetty at town centre, walking on Roys Peak Track, resting on Mount Iron summit. Take a day or two in Wanaka, and you will definitely feel the beauty and magnificence of Lake Wanaka

Absolutely stunning with so much to see & do. Go boating or take a helicopter ride through the mountains, drive around and see the stunning scenery, visit the town & experience a truly beautiful tourist place with excellent vibes. Close to ski fields, gin distillery & more. Friendly locals always smiling & willing to help. A must see for all ages. Attractions like Warbirds over Wanaka & the toy & car museum. Stunning mountain views especially when snow is on them. Something magical about this place. Always something happening here. Put it on your bucket list & you won't be disappointed.

Beautiful lake with chalets and hotels lining is shores on the one end and massive mountain ranges on the other. Roy's peak is accessed from here which is a hike that takes you to that place you see on Instagram with sprawling views of the lake in all its glory. For the less adventurous, there are kayaks available to rent and other adventure activities

Small little town and a big lake. The famous tree is about a 15 minute walk from the town and can be done near the road or the water. The tree is much closer to the edge of the lake than expected, and much smaller than the photos. Nice pit stop in between a long car or bus ride. The weather can change the experience, definitely plan ahead if this is something you want to include in your trip!

A special tree that can give you great inspiration ! The Roys Bay of Lake Wanaka is only a a very small beach but there stands a very special and expensive tree. People call it the "Lone Tree" This willow tree submerged just off the shoreline of Roys bay in Lake Wanaka has become an iconic feature of the town . This photo album is only for this one tree ! Hope you like it .
The Lindis Pass is a scenic alpine driving route that passes through a conservation area with striking mountain views. It is an attractive destination for tourists traveling from the Mackenzie Region to Queenstown or vice versa. The pass features several viewpoints and pull-offs where travelers can stop and take pictures, as well as hiking trails for those looking to explore more of the area. Additionally, there are some interesting attractions along the way, such as Cromwell's giant fruit sculpture.
Great view of Lindis Pass, there are a few lookout stops at both left and right. Take a chance to snap a picture of you with snow capped mountain as a background. Trust me, it worth it.

Remember to stop by at Lindis Pass lookout as it has one of the most amazing landscape views along highway 8. There is a small lookout just next to the highway, so it's just simply to take this as a short stop before continue your trip. The view is amazing and magnificent.

Wonderful mountain, great views and challenges to climb. I climbed Mount Aspiring Dec 24 2019. I went in solo and found other climbers going for the summit on a good weather day. The approach I did in two stages. First to the lower hut on French Ridge, then to the Colin Todd hut near the summit. The climbers I teamed with, planned to take the early summer route just North of the NW Ridge. We did a 4 am start and there were two huge avalanches that changed our plans to do the full NW Ridge. The rock was mostly a scramble with a couple of 5.0 moves. The ice was very solid and the weather held. It was a good day and great views.

This was our favorite thrill experience on the entire South Island! The jet boat was so much fun and we loved it so much that we wanted to go again. The scenery that you see from the boat is GORGEOUS! The color of the water is magical and we really enjoyed our wilderness hike to the jet boat pickup spot. Did this as part of the Heli Siberia Max tour with Backcountry Helicopters and couldn't recommend it enough!! 10/10 one of the best experiences you could do in the area!! Book it already :)
Brianna Seaberg — Google review
We used the jetboat for our transfers to and from the Gillespie Pass Circuit (Into Young Valley and out from Kerin Forks). Wilkin River Jets was great in communicating regarding booking spaces on the boats, and our transfers were punctual and stress-free. Definitely worth it not having to do a river crossing, and it was nice to take a spin along some very picturesque rivers. They do a great job with access to the mountains.

Highly recommend for anyone doing the Gillespie Pass Circuit. We got the drop off at Young River and pick up at Kerin Forks on Jet Boat. Was great to not worry about river crossing and fun ride on the jet boat which saved our feet on the last day of our 2 night circuit.

Thank you guys very much to rescue me from flooding river. I was finishing my trip at Gillespie Pass Circuit in a rain condition and river was flooding a lot. After two attempts to cross the river I was wet and cold it was obvious I don’t have chance to do it. It was Anzac holiday I was pretty sure to get anyone for rescue is impossible but after short call to guys they understood what’s going on. It took half hour to bring and get boat in the river for them incredible fast job. Was so glad to see you then. Thank you again 🙏🏻, great team.

Did the Siberia Adventure day trip with Wilkin River Jets & Backcountry Helicopters this season and can't recommend it enough. Amazing flight into the National Park, followed by a couple hours hiking down to Kerin Forks where we met the jet boat. The driver gave some great info into the history of the valley, and threw in some spins as we headed back to Makarora.
Highlight of our South Island trip!

Harley was a great boat driver during our Gillespie Pass Circuit tramp. Also, we accidentally left some cookware behind at Siberia Hut and Amy went above and beyond to coordinate someone to retrieve it for us and also track it down when it got dropped off at the wrong location. We so appreciate her help, truly incredible customer service!

Such an incredible experience. Simon our skipper of the 60 min jet boat ride was fantastic, super personable, knowledgeable about the area and the kids loved the 360 spins. Georgina in logistics has impeccable customer service. Her knowledge about the weather and water and how she explained that to people who were hiking out for jet boat collection up the Wilkin was impressive. Thanks for an awesome experience, you couldn't wipe the smiles off our faces.

We did their Siberian Wilderness Adventure (extended) and had the BEST day ever - wish we could give them 10 stars! A helicopter flight across mountain glaciers and an alpine landing, a great walk out of Siberia valley through wonderful nature, and then a jet boat ride down the crystal blue Wilkin river - it doesn't get better than that! Best value for (helicopter flying) money in NZ for sure!

My family of 4 has the most incredible time on the Wilkin River Jet ride on the Makarora and Wilkin rivers. If you’re in the area or planning a visit to the region, this is an absolute must do. Thanks for having us.
The Blue Pools Track in New Zealand is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. The area boasts lush green forests and stunningly blue rivers, with the famous Blue Pools being the main attraction. These beautiful pools exhibit mesmerizing watercolors created by rock flour from glaciers, surrounded by the vibrant greenery of New Zealand. However, visitors should be prepared for encounters with the local black flies.
Haast Pass is a serene mountain pass that cuts through the Southern Alps, offering a picturesque journey through lush beech forests. Spanning approximately 140 km, this route from Wanaka to the West Coast showcases diverse vegetation and stunning scenery. The winding road allows for leisurely exploration of the region's breathtaking hikes and waterfalls. A road trip on South Island would not be complete without experiencing Haast Pass, which provides epic views and numerous opportunities for photos or walks in the native bush.
For many the Haast Pass is the scenic drive from Wanaka to the glaciers, with a stop at the Blue Pools.
But if you do a little research you will see the drive is filled with fantastic sites, provided you’re prepared to stop often, and take a short walk.
In order, on the drive up from Haast, make sure you check out Depot Creek falls (20 mins from Haast on the right, 200 walk metres walk), Roaring Billy Falls (23 mins from Haast on the left, signposted with car park, 15 mins walk on a flat track, but the rainforest scenery along the way is superb), Thunder Creek Falls (40 mins from Haast on the left, 5 mins walk to the right of the car park), Fantail Falls (45 mins from Haast on the right, 2 mins walk from the carpark).
And finally, the Blue Pools, which has heaps of parking, but is also popular with bus tours and day trippers from Wanaka and Queenstown. This is about a 40 minute walk each way.
There’s also plenty of places to pull over and admire the scenery, the bridges, river etc.
There are no shops or cafes between Haast and Makaroa, so stock up.
Stephen Spencer — Google review
This is an absolutely amazing drive and don't forget to stop here just on the way into Fox Glacier from Wanaka. The Haast Pass is amazing with so many photo opportunities and waterfalls 👌👌
James Buchan — Google review
Stunning place with great views all the way. The scenery is constantly changing and no matter where you look you will get breathtaking views of snow capped mountains to massive forests and roaring rivers. there is so many differnt places to stop along the way especially along the haast river where there is so many waterfalls including the thunder creek and fantail falls. another stop is the blue pools which are great for swimming. Both sides of the drive have great final destinations whether it be the seaside town of haast with massive waves and great seafood or the great place of wanaka with skiing and lots of other stuff.

Mountain scenery, rain forest, tree ferns a water fall and cicadas. Don't miss if you are touring South Island. The only services are at Haast or just north of Lake Wanaka at makarora. There is a rest area and campsite about half way with drinking water and toilets. Apart from that this is unspoilt countryside.

The Waiatoto River Safari was the hidden gem of our trip! It was a fun ride up the river in a jet boat. The water was amazingly blue, we stopped to take a look at the kiwi sanctuary, we went on a short bush walk, we had tea on the beach area that separated the river from the ocean. My husband and I enjoyed it immensely. Highly, highly recommended.

We loved the information provided on the flora and fauna, pest animals, the whitebait industry, the Alpine Fault, and all of the anecdotes about living on the West Coast. The delicious homemade scones, coffee and whitebait sample capped it off. Thanks Ruth, and we hope to come back again soon - so that we can see the view this time !

Museum is great and well worth the visit.
However the gardens and water features in particular are in a state of disrepair. A bit sad looking as you walk past it to get to the museum. Hope they can fix water features soon.

A spatious centre with several permanent exhibitions, an info desk, and a small shop. The exhibitions are informative but dated. The lady at the reception should learn how to greet people. She has no customer care. When I entered, the lady was on phone and did not even looked at us or did not smile. Looked like not bothered at all about our presence. There was nobody else in the office/shop. She must learn good manners. I just left the shop. I visited there with my two kids on 30/9/2020 at 12.45 pm. Very poor service.

Very helpful guide at the center, and they have a big free exhibition about nature, history and animals around the area.
Ship Creek, located in Haast, offers two captivating walks that showcase the area's natural beauty. The Kahikatea Swamp Forest Walk is a brief 20-minute stroll on a boardwalk through a lush swamp forest filled with towering Kahikatea trees. On the other hand, the Dune Lake Walk is a 30-minute adventure through sand dunes and coastal forests, providing stunning views of the coast.
A splendid place to stop and enjoy a couple of very different short walks. The kahikatea forest walk takes you right amongst some tall groves of these amazing trees. I love kahikateas and there are so few left in Canterbury, it's a real treat to walk amongst them. The dune walk was also a special experience with the white dunes and the flotsam that washes up on est coast beaches. We were there at sunset and it was quite magical. No sandflies were found!

I visited Ship Creek Beach in Aug 22, and it was great. Isolated and almost eerie during the late afternoon with no one else on the beach. As the photos show, there is a lot of Driftwood on the beach. It's not safe for swimming due to strong currents, and there are no lifesavers, so don't risk it.

To the left, of the main entry/carpark a short boardwalk leads over the sand to a beach view and off this a pathway around 20 - 30 mins return and up about 30m of stairs to a viewing platform with views down the coast. Parking for all sized vehicles available and some good displays around to look over.
Tip - remember to take the sandfly repellant

Lovely loop walk to a tranquil lagoon. If you don’t have time for that climb the lookout. If you aren’t fit enough for that the beach and stream are still a very pretty sight.

This is a must-see en route up the West Coast. A beautiful and beautifully presented walk combining beach, woodland, and lakeside all within an hour. A credit to DoC.
At the main area and then along the pathway there are steps up to look-out points. So keep an eye out for them and make these short climbs which command great vistas.
And there’s a clean and tidy toilet block too!

Yes there are sandflies (the little gnats that bite and leave welts) so just have a jacket on and you'll be good :) The rocks. THE ROCKS. they are tumbled to perfection on this beach. Lovely stop with great views, even on a rainy day! The boardwalk makes experiencing the different sections of the bush really easy (with minimal sand!). Unfortunately, the swamp track is still closed as of March 2023.

Comfortable seaside with a few easy tracking trails, worth spending more time there to explore the beauty. LOTS of tourists LOL
Amazing views and a nice break from the drive. Clean toilet. Plenty of big parking spots available. More travel tips on YouTube caravantheworld

Well worth stopping. Beautiful views of the west coast both North and South

Smallish car park with nice views of the bay below, but can be busy as stopping point for coach tours. Also plagued by sand flies on the day we visited.

Theobelisk monument at Knights Point was set up to celebrate the completion of the highway connecting Westland with Otago.
What is interesting is the name. Usually Prime Minister's / politicians try to name things after themselves / monuments, buildings, roads etc. Usually it is called empire building.
If you don’t tell people about your success, then they probably won’t know about it. Wellington City is the capital where the politicians call the shots. Politicians are renowned for promoting themselves and naming stuff for posterity.
However, the construction crew outsmarted the delegation from Wellington and informed them that the area had "already been named" Knights Point. The officials inquired who "Knight" was and were informed that he was the surveyor's dog. Knights Point was named after Norman McGeorge's dog Knight.
The tail wags the dog! An expression
used to describe a situation in which an important or powerful person, organization, etc., is being controlled by someone or something that is much less important or powerful.
The official opening of this last section of the highway that is now State Highway 6 was on 6 November 1965.
Today the site includes a car park and viewing platform overlooking the coast towards Arnott Point, a resting area for New Zealand fur seals and occasionally elephant seals.

One of the many viewpoints on West coast. Nothing special about the place. Got a parking area and rest rooms. Beware of sandflies.

Not much to do here, no walks just a car park with some views and a toilet block. There are information signs that explain a bit of history of the area and the building of the west coast road.

Definitely worth stopping at as the view is stunning of the coastline from here.

Spectacular view over the coast, nice stop if you are driving by.

Not much to see on a rainy day. Could hardly see the water. I imagine the view would be ok on a sunny day, but as others have commented it’s pretty overgrown. Sand flies were out, so dress accordingly. There are loo/bathroom facilities though

Not the best view of the Tasman sea... As it's quit over grown... But nice monument here to avoid the history of the Haast pass. Clean toilets although it's just a long drop. Plenty of safe parking available.

First and foremost: come prepared with bug repellant! Tons of sandflies here and they’ll happily chomp on any exposed part of you otherwise.
Overall a pretty viewpoint, but not super remarkable. The whole region is so gorgeous that I didn’t find this specific spot to hugely stand out, if that makes any sense. Still a good place to stop and stretch your legs, and use clean bathrooms if you need them.
Really nice beach. The best place to see Fiordland Crested Penguins (Tawaki). Very good sightings at sunrise and just before sunset. Only recommendation is to come prepared for sand flies.

Not a fantastic beach unless you like sandflies or you're fortunately enough to be there when the penguins are not out at sea, but worth visiting for the amazing trek along the rainforest path that leads to the beach, including the bouncy bridge! Allow 45 minutes each way for the walk.

A must do activity if you travel Haast - Fox Glacier or visa versa. The walk through the magic forest is very pleasant and you might spot special birds. The beach is beautiful with spectacular rocks and some months (July- November) you can see pinguïns.

This hidden beach, nestled beyond a 40-minute walk through a local jungle, offers a unique and secluded escape from the typical tourist spots. The journey itself adds an adventurous touch, making the arrival at the beach even more rewarding. What sets this destination apart is the rare opportunity to witness penguins, creating a magical experience, especially until early December. If you're seeking tranquility, a touch of adventure, and the chance to marvel at nature's wonders, this off-the-beaten-path beach is a hidden gem worth exploring.

Nice walk to a beach where penguin sightings are possible. Sand flys galore.

Enchanting easy walk where the rain forest meets the ocean.
At 3pm a couple coming from the beach said they say two penguins.
We waited for 15 minutes but couldn’t take the sandflies.
The walk down to the beach didn’t have any sandflies.
Three years ago I could hear the babies chirping in the rocks, it was Dec.
This time no chirping.
Enjoy!

I had an amazing experience on the best hike imaginable, through lush jungle leading to a stunning beach. Be sure to bring some spray to fend off the sand flies. With a bit of luck, you might even spot penguins!
The trail was easy to navigate, taking only 1.5 hours round trip. Restroom facilities available at the parking area.

A great walk through a forest to a secluded beach which is a breeding ground for penguins.
Unfortunately we didn't see any penguins on our visit, but the walk and the beach were worth it in any case.
It took approx 1h 20m for a walk out and back again, with a few minutes spent at the beach.
It was doable in trainers, and was mostly flat with an even walking surface.

Beautiful walk through gorgeous forest. Unfortunately we didn't get to see any Penguins but still worth it.

A small beach where you can see Fiordland crested pingouins, if you're lucky. We saw three in two hours.
They are quite shy, so lay down on a rock and be calm while waiting. Wear long clothes because of sandflies.

We didn’t see any penguins on our visit in early February (midday), I think it’s best to go earlier in the year to see them nesting when they are more frequently spotted. The walk itself to the beach was pleasant and quite easy on the legs through a nice portion of forest/jungle.
Word of warning: cover up exposed skin as the beach was heavily populated with sandflies who were relentless!

This is by far a top 10 favorite walk. The entire walk is relatively flat traveling through a rainforest feeling surrounding you. The trees put on such unique displays the way they've grown into odd shapes and thicknesses. Most wearing beautiful moss leggings lol some with some covered entirely. The path is very clear and open. The air is fresh. We didn't spot penguins as we were told they left the area at the start of December. But we were pleased with the walk alone and the beach at the end was the "icing on the cake". We recommend, and as most reviews are saying, prepare yourself with covered clothing or repellent for the sandflies. We were covered and took a citronella candle, but no repellent sprayed on our exposed skin....amateurs. Luckily, just our hands were attacked. No dogs allowed.
