Lichfield Cathedral

Mentioned on
Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The medieval Lichfield Cathedral is famous for its three spires, and for the stained glass windows made from Herkenrode glass. It's also home to paintings from the Middle Ages, as well as gardens and buildings in The Close.
Lichfield Cathedral is one of the most iconic cathedrals in the UK. The structure, the design, the interior layout, and other historical figures are extraordinary and amazing. It was my first time to visit this city so I decided to go around the town. The maintenance of the grass is greener and well kept healthy.
Mabs Gadd — Google review
Definitely a beautiful quaint cathedral. Lots of interesting features to look at, even the medieval book display in the chapel. Also a nice walk around the grounds too.
Kyle Fox — Google review
Beautiful building. Is a must to visit if you are in the area. Colourful stained glass windows. Nice a quiet during mid week if you want to walk around and contemplate.
Claire Pilkington — Google review
Lovely cathedral. A lot to see and interactive information points are dotted around. Some interesting wall painting fragments and do sit in St Chads Head chapel. It is a beautiful place of tranquility. The entry desk is just as you walk in, so if you don't want to contribute then swerve that when you go in. There is a small gift shop and opportunities to donate something around the cathedral. The buildings around the area are also very interesting with a lovely place for lunch nearby
Julie Hemmings — Google review
A gem of a find in Lichfield, with the most amazing architecture I have seen in UK cathedrals. One would be mistaken they are indeed in the UK! Such beauty both externally with epic detail, and inside such grand design with high ceilings, stain glass windows, art, sculptures and more. Overall, a very peaceful place to visit and a highly recommended experience and visit to such a beautiful cathedral.
Harps Sohal — Google review
Wonderful history you can touch and enjoy close up. The moon was a draw for our grandchildren, but once inside they enjoyed a walk round and asked lots of questions, we'll worth a visit fir the architecture alone !
Graham Kindon — Google review
Went on the 11.00 am guided tour which was supposed to last 50 minutes. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and obviously totally in love with the building. Fully recommended.
Lorraine Mitchell — Google review
Visited Lichfield Cathedral first time and so much impressed. Definitely a remarkably beautiful cathedral. There are lots of interesting features to look at. Lichfield Cathedral is open daily from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 7.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays. Admission is free, just voluntary donation. Tower tours are also available.
Aom Aomm — Google review
Beautiful building with so much history. So worth a visit. It always amazes me how these buildings were created way back when the only way to build was with man power, no machinery. How much work was put into them. Lichfield Cathedral is stunning.
Georgina Homer — Google review
We visited 19th February 2024. It's the most beautiful building full of tranquillity, stunning architecture and fabulous stained glass windows. It's well worth a visit. Parking is reasonably close.
Dave Hurr — Google review
This is place is beautiful and medieval English cathedral, beautiful architecture. Must visit place in UK. The town is serene and just walk down to the garden where there is artificial lake to site and enjoy the sunset
Shikha Singh — Google review
I was only in Lichfield a few hours and came across the cathedral by chance. What a gem to behold! Religion aside (not for me), this is a stunning cathedral with outstanding, intricate architecture. Inside it is beautiful. Huge ceilings, statues, carved wooden pews etc. It is free admission but they recommend a donation. £5 well spent to keep this amazing piece of history maintained. I spent an hour last n here just absorbing the history and splendour, but could’ve spent two hours quite happily!

Came here to see the moon exhibition. Looked amazing for sure, would definitely recommend. Not sure about a holy establishment serving alcohol mind🤔
R Far — Google review
It is a fantastic building inside and out. It's free to go in, but a donation is always welcome. Guide books avadible to help you explore, and the staff are more than happy to help or just have a friendly chat. Nice little shop with a few bits in, and they have a few events on to look out for. Will be back to do a tower tour when they run again
Ashley Lightfoot — Google review
Fantastic old English church, with over 1300 years of history. Really a gem frozen in time. The nave is architecturally beautiful with a space that just seems to go on. The organ console (where the organist plays) is actually up in the second story in the nave. Must see when you pass though town. Exterior of the cathedral is weathered sandstone having many exquisite carvings and statues. Even the much younger (relatively speaking) Wooden Close building dates back to the early 1500s.
Jared Meaux — Google review
I was amazed by this cathedral. It was huge and gorgeous. I have visited couple of cathedrals but this is the biggest one I have ever visited. If you are traveling England please add this to your attraction list.
Nathasha Wijesinghe — Google review
A wonderful place to walk through the history of Stafford inside the cathedral. The cathedral staff were social and helful. Neatly maintained and entry is free.
Narasimman Sunderajan — Google review
If you go to Lichfield or even pass through its a must visit weather your religious or not. The architecture is amazing with statues and pieces of art work inside to suit. Has a lovely quiet and peaceful feeling inside. It is free to visit they just ask if you can to make a donation that goes towards the upkeep and maintenance ect of the Cathedral. We really enjoyed walking round and it has plenty of photo opportunities. The cathedral also has shows/events held in there that are good we seen Elvis and it was brillian helped by the aquatics of the place

My first view of the cathedral was from The Close, and I just thought WOW. The main double fronted facade that faces you, is so impressive, and I think the majority of people would have the same reaction. Until visiting this weekend, I never knew Lichfield had a cathedral, and no one has ever said about it before. It has to be one of the top hidden gems to go and see. The interior is just has good , with outstanding stainglassed windows, the main Nave & Choir areas which are huge.
Richard Harrison — Google review
Went for the Gaia event. £5 per ticket. Beautiful cathedral. First time I've been to Lichfield. Would like to go again during the day as I would love to see the stained glass windows in the light.
Emma — Google review
I entered the cathedral and was just gobsmacked by the size of the globe. We spent ages exploring and even spoke to a vicar. Im a massive fan of church's and cathedral's, the architecture is just jaw dropping. The staff were so freindly and inviting, i will be coming back and its well worth a visit.

In the modern age to combine community use and historic monument in this way- stunning. They placed a huge rotating dome in the centre isle with learning clubs for kids. The ww2 area on the history of German prisoners in cannock chase was excellent and touching

History Museums
Located in the heart of Lichfield, the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum and Bookshop is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about the life of Samuel Johnson, author of the first English Dictionary. The museum offers tours of Johnson's 1707 house over five floors, with staff that are both helpful and welcoming. The museum also features a short film outlining Johnson's life and children can even dress up. Additionally, there are second-hand books available for purchase on-site.
As a visitor from afar, I was captivated by the historic charm and intellectual legacy of this esteemed location, the birthplace of Samuel Johnson, pioneer of the inaugural English Dictionary. The guided tours of the meticulously preserved 1707 house offered a glimpse into the life and times of this literary luminary. Stepping through its doors felt akin to traversing the corridors of history itself. The experience was truly enriching, resonating with the essence of cultural enlightenment. A five-star rating is undoubtedly deserved for the invaluable insight and memorable journey through the annals of linguistic and literary achievement.

In Lichfield for the day? Do spend an hour here. It's right in the centre and free with lots of interesting things to look at. Staff helpful and welcoming. Children can dress up. Oh and there are second hand books for sale too. Be aware that it is over 5 floors with steep stairs. Lots of good cafes nearby.
J B — Google review
A very interesting and free place to visit, I really appreciated the remarkably friendly gentleman who was happy to share information about almost everything related to Lichfield and Dr. Johnson. Lovely second-hand bookshop too.
Ioannis Lempesis — Google review
I found this a very interesting place. I knew very little about Samuel Johnson and it was interesting to learn more about his life. The short film was particularly good. The staff were friendly and welcoming. I recommend a visit to the Samuel Johnson Birthplace to anyone visiting Lichfield.
Eve Rua — Google review
A little disappointed with my visit. There seemed to be as much information about his best friend, Garrick, as there was about Johnson, however, there was some interesting details about Samuel Johnson so as the entry was free, well worth a visit.
Ken Fletcher — Google review
5 floors packed with fascinating information and details, relating to Johnson and his time. The history boards are well set out and the information panels are clear and interesting. We noticed plenty of activities for children. The staff members were welcoming and helpful.
David Smith — Google review
An interesting place to visit, free entry with contributions welcomed. Plenty to see and do for all ages and all exhibits have their own story clearly displayed.
Paul Escritt — Google review
Interesting little museum in the centre of Lichfield, friendly staff and lots of good information on Samuel Johnson, plus an original copy of his dictionary, free to enter but you need to book a slot.
vince ryan — Google review
A fascinating man of singular wit, worthy of visiting and learning more about him. Museum is in an old building on several floors, donations are welcome as it's free to enter. Currently they want you to pre book online during covid, which was easy to do.
Tom (Bozz) — Google review
Well presented quaint informative museum. Started with clear engaging video of his life. Then all other rooms of his birthplace showed his life works & story.
Pete Gee — Google review
We had a lovely visit here with our guests from Canada. Even though I’ve lived in Lichfield for a few years I had never been in before. The person who welcomed us was fantastic- enthusiastic and engaging. He gave us some interesting information about Lichfield as well as the museum itself. There’s a lot to do including a film to watch. There’s the first dictionary- as we know it on the top floor to look at too. Well worth a visit. It’s free to enter too!

Erasmus Darwin House

Specialty Museums
Erasmus Darwin House, located on Beacon Street in Lichfield, is a museum dedicated to the life of Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles Darwin. This fine Georgian townhouse was home to many influential figures during the 18th century, including inventor James Watt and pottery entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood. The house stands as a testament to Lichfield's rich intellectual history and its role in the Industrial Revolution.
Small museum run by volunteers who have a passion for their work. Lots of interesting information, presented well. Definitely worth the £4 to get in. Wow what a truly enlightment figure and family. I loved the circular family tree that showed the links and relationships to key thinkers, from Charles Darwin to John Maynard Keynes. I would love this more if it was presented on a larger horizontal table format. Easier to read. Also great exhibition of the work of a local artist.

Absolute gem of a place near Lichfield Cathedral. Lovely garden which I imagine looks stunning later in the year. Fascinating story and really helpful volunteers

I learnt a surprising amount from this small museum. Entrance is £4 and it was very quiet on my visit.
Bryan Allen — Google review
Absolutely lovely little museum. Small but really interesting, beautiful architecture, and well cared-for. Kept my kids (5 and 8) engaged for a couple of hours - lots of hands-on things to try, from making a Georgian-style silhouette, to dressing up, to playing with a microscope. And they were really thrilled with their little prize for completing the 'mouse hunt' around the house - thank you!
Louise Ramsden — Google review
Interesting museum in Darwin’s house. Lots of surprising facts and interactive exhibits, so interesting for all the family. Pretty garden to walk through with all the medicinal plants that would have been important. Wonderful views of the Cathedral from the windows. Worth a visit, friendly staff.
Karen Ballantine — Google review
A very interesting and informative place. The garden is lovely, and there are several rooms detailing the life of Erasmus Darwin. There are toilets located on the ground floor. Floors are accessible by stairs or lift. It was definitely worth the £5 per person entry fee.

Erasmus Darwin House in Lichfield, Staffordshire, embodies the legacy of the esteemed English poet and physician, Erasmus Darwin, grandfather to naturalist Charles Darwin. This Grade I listed building now serves as a writer's house museum, beautifully commemorating Erasmus Darwin's remarkable life. The garden, in particular, was a breathtaking highlight, offering a serene oasis steeped in history. My visit was nothing short of extraordinary, and I was thoroughly captivated by the rich tapestry of Erasmus Darwin's life and contributions. Five stars without hesitation for this exceptional destination, where history and nature intertwine in a truly captivating manner.

Lovely museum with lots of hands-on activities. I particularly enjoyed the talking machine. Erasmus Darwin really ought to be as well known as his grandson!

Intriguing garden and setting with a real touch of history and awe. Didn’t go in the house but pop round the front and see the unsettling mannikin in the window.
Peter Robinson — Google review
Historical place to visit well worth the entrance fee, just 2 mins from Lichfield Cathedral. If you knew about Charles Darwin then his Grandfather was probably the brains of the family. Who knew!
Charles Hepplewhite — Google review
Beautiful small museum well worth visiting. Lots to see and really well explained with the information provided. Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. Erasmus is someone well worth learning about

The house is next to Lichfield Cathedral. Although the museum was closed the time I went, the garden was still open.

Erasmus Darwin House is a fascinating place to visit. Inside the house, visitors can find a multitude of exhibits and there is a superb herb garden at the rear of the property. All the herbs have lots of information displayed, detailing their properties and uses. Erasmus was the grandfather of the world famous naturalist Charles Darwin. The herb garden can be found easily, just a short walk from Lichfield Cathedral.
Chris Gibson — Google review
This is a lovely little museum about the life of Erasmus Darwin (grandfather of Charles Darwin). I'd never heard of him before going to Lichfield, and had no idea that so many of Charles' theories of evolution were potentially based on his grandfather's ideas and theories. Erasmus it seems was a quite remarkable man - well ahead of his time on the idea of education for women, separation of church and state and much more. A few of the exhibits weren't working, and many were obviously designed for school trips or the like. Personally I'd like to have seen more detail of his ideas for evolution. The lady at reception was fantastic - very enthusiastic and informative, and incredibly helpful. Well worth the few pounds entry fee.

Nature & Parks
Beacon Park is a historic, family-friendly park that spans 70 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and open spaces. The park boasts an 18-hole par-3 golf course, brass rubbing activities, crazy golf, children's play area with sand pit and digging machines, and sports facilities for tennis, basketball, bowls and foot golf. Visitors can also take leisurely walks around the large grassy areas or explore the rich history of the site through information boards dotted around.
A brilliant park for all ages. It's probably the best park I've ever seen. A number of carparks available, all with a nominal charge. Activities include golf and frizzy courses. Various climbing features, 3 permanently sited fair ground rides, and much much more. (See the photographs) There is a cafe next to the play area, and toilet/washroom facilities are very close.
Gary Biddle — Google review
A really lovely park. This is the first time I have been here, came for a grass roots football match. Parking £1 for 4 hours, got a great playground for kids, a pitch and putt golf course, and also a frisbee golf course. There is a really nice, not too expensive cafe here as well. Left feeling a bit sad that it is not closer to where we live as we would be here a lot in the summer if it was closer.
Andy Wassell — Google review
Lovely play area with sand pit area too and digging machines. Play area suitable for all ages. Large grassy areas for playing football, leisurely walks. Crazy golf also available. Cafe and public toilets too.
Kate Taylor — Google review
Visited with family and friends. Neatly maintained and it was lovely to see the tulips and flowers in the park. It has a golf course and many food ball layouts, a small lake with paddle boats. A small cafe inside to meet visitors needs and a lot of stuff in the kids play area. A more inclusive part and it has a swing for specially abled kids and it deserves more respect towards their kindness
Narasimman Sunderajan — Google review
What an amazing park! We were recommended to go here by locals. Clean and tidy park, got swan pedal boats, kids play areas, bouncy castle, bumper cars and the list goes on 👍🏽 Public toilets available and clean too. We spent over 8 hours here and could have easily stayed longer. This is a must if you local and want to spend a nice family day 💯

Went to Beacon Park for the first time in a lot of years. Nice to see the boating lake still going with boats being rented out. The cafe was new, but reasonably priced, seating inside and outside. The flower beds towards the main entrance were very well kept, as I remember they always were. Enough to keep the kids happy for a while.
andy smedley — Google review
Superb park! I always loved it here as a child, and now, at the age of 41, I get to bring my own daughter here, too. Clean, tidy, and a great size! The only thing I dislike is the number of dog owners walking around where young children are playing, without their dogs on leads. Unfortunately, this happens in too many places these days!
Mark Punsheon — Google review
Big park with parking and cafe/pavilion and nice gardens.
Philip Humpage Humpage — Google review
Beautifully looked after. The landscaped garden is a great place to sit and read during spring, summer and early autumn. There's a wonderful fountain at the centre of it all, surrounded by kaleidoscopic flower beds and plenty of comfortable benches. The park also boasts a couple of tennis courts, a playing field, some public toilets and a quaint little ice cream parlour for a tasty treat.

Wall Roman Site

Mentioned on
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The Wall Roman Site is an ancient archaeological site located in a serene environment, close to the motorway. The ruins of Roman buildings dating back to the 2nd century are the main attraction of this historical landmark, and visitors can also explore a small Baptist church nearby. Information boards placed at different areas provide detailed information about the interesting artifacts on display, and there's even a handy leaflet available for purchase at only 20 pence from an honesty box.
Interesting place to visit. Handy leaflet for 20p in the honesty box, which gave you a couple of walks to follow giving you detailed info at points along the way. Great scenery and despite its proximity to the motorway, lovely and peaceful. Interesting ruins with information boards at the different areas. Unfortunately the museum was closed which was disappointing but we unfortunately picked the wrong weekend to visit. Hopefully be back another time to take a look inside.
Karen Ballantine — Google review
Lovely place to explore. Interesting reading the signs explaining what each part of the ruins would have been hundreds of years ago. Lovely views and a nice little walk around the area. The museum was not open at the time we went so cannot comment on that.
Rachel Coyle — Google review
With good structure to receive visitors. Roman buildings dating from the 2nd century are the main attraction of the place, it is also worth a visit to the small Baptist church that is just behind the Roman ruins.

What an amazing hidden gem! Thoroughly enjoyed the views and walks. Plenty for the little ones to do, with the use of their imagination and climbing skills!
vanessa easy — Google review
A nicely presented Roman site with remains of a bath house and guest house. The site is owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage, which is why the same place appears on both websites - that wasn't clear to me before I visited! The small museum is free but only open on some days - check before you travel. The volunteers staffing it were very friendly and informative, and helped me enjoy my visit. Strongly recommended for an insight into Roman activity in this area.
Rhiannon Grant — Google review
Nice place to visit and also the small church overlooking the site. There are some information shields to help you further imagine how it looked.
Jon Flynn — Google review
With the museum open on a sunny day we spent well over an hour here. Nice thing to pop too, the boys enjoyed it and the volunteers were very helpful and engaging. The gift shop was very reasonably priced too. Pencils pin badges. Small things but I dont have to remortgage the house so that's nice
Robert Webster — Google review
We visited on a misty Sunday out of season, so the museum was shut. However, entrance to the site is free in reasonable daylight hours, and there are plenty of interpretation boards around the site. These are informative, but not as good as I have seen at other English Heritage sites. Probably time for a revamp! It was nice to see that the 'Friends' have provided some lovely flower borders at the entrance. In addition to the Roman ruins, a stand by the car park sells leaflets for 20p which provide a guided walk around the area. We very much enjoyed this and would have done so even more had the weather not deteriorated to heavy rain. We will come back again on a nicer day after we have done some background reading!
Sheridan Parsons — Google review
We were looking for a picnic stop on the A5 as we travelled from North Wales to South Leicestershire and this was ideal. As English Heritage members we found a free car park with picnic tables and then had a walk around the site of the roman remains of Wall. There were lots of information boards showing how life was in Roman times. We were disappointed that the museum wasn't open on that day.

Bath House & mansion. Walk round, useful boards. Full of rabbits when we dropped in early evening. Museum open 10-4? So closed.
Cherry Cheeks (Roberta) — Google review
An interesting piece of history. Unfortunately, I arrived after the museum had already closed but I took a wander around the exposed walls, I didn't do either the trails. There's a small car park at the beginning of the trails with 4 picnic benches under trees to rest and eat. It would make for an interesting day out.

Amazing service. Fantastic staff and a lovely atmosphere. We didn't book but they squeezed 3 of us in, and glad they did as the food was spot on. Everything made fresh to order and was lovely. Highly recommend. Of course book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Kay Mincher — Google review
The Restaurant offers a pleasant ambiance, providing a nice atmosphere for diners. However, the lack of parking on-site is a drawback, as customers are forced to navigate through a battered car park full of potholes, requiring a 5 to 6-minute walk to reach the restaurant. The food at Ego Restaurant is average, with the pizza being a notable example. While it's decent, it falls short of the authentic flavors found in other pizza establishments. Despite this, the overall dining experience is enjoyable, thanks to the inviting atmosphere and attentive service. Overall, Ego earns a rating of 3 stars. While it has its charms, including a pleasant ambiance and satisfactory service, improvements in parking convenience and culinary authenticity could enhance the overall dining experience.

Lovely restaurant located at the edge of the town near the Cathedral, some of the seating overlooks Minster Pool. Lovely atmosphere and the staff are friendly and helpful. Food is delicious and not too badly priced, good vegetarian choice too. Easy access for wheelchair users. Strongly suggest booking ahead online as it does get busy, you're unlikely to get a table just dropping by - especially on a Friday/Saturday evening. Highly recommended, you won't be disappointed.

This place was truly amazing. As me and my friend walked in we was told it was full (and this place is huge) but there was one high stool table next to the bar available which we had. It was overlooking a lake. Beautiful scenery. Staff were so attentive to detail, the menu had so many tantalising options but eventually we opted for paella and the kebab special. Both were absolutely amazing. We really can't wait to re visit. It was definitely worth the 30 mile trek down 👌

Lal Bagh, an Indian restaurant known for its excellent service and food, has gained popularity among customers. Despite being busy, the restaurant manages to provide great customer service. One unique aspect of Lal Bagh is that it serves alcohol, which sets it apart from many other curry houses where you need to bring your own. The food at Lal Bagh is fresh and delicious, making it a worthwhile place to visit. The staff is friendly and accommodating, creating a pleasant dining experience.
Great service- picked up after ordering online. They were so friendly, offering us free drinks whilst we waited. Super kind!
E K — Google review
I have never been disappointed with Lal Bagh, not once, we have eaten there half a dozen times and the food and service has always been impeccable. However, we decided to order online, and this is where their service was tested. I only received some of my order, I was missing rice, onion salad, a large cup of mint dip, this was around 11pm. I phoned to ask where the rest was and I was rather rudely told I had not ordered the items, they were clearly on the order, in response, they sent someone back with slightly warm boiled rice (I had ordered pilau) watery mint dip and again, no onion salad. Now, it was bank holiday and I can respect that they may have been busy, however, a takeaway should be treated the same as a dining customer, I would not have expected this if I was eating in. To some this may seem petty, I have always flown the flag for Lal Bagh, and with food ordering, once you've had a bad experience its very hard to ensure this will not be repeated, not too sure if I will use them again for a takeaway.

amazing food, extremely authentic and a large range of food on the menu, I loved the korma and onion bhaji, the staff were lovely as well. Although the place was packed and somewhat hard to move around, the service didn't suffer at all, our food came out so quickly and we couldn't get enough of it .

This is reliably the best Indian Restaurant in Lichfield. Food is excellent - so tasty, well presented and generous portions. The Sunday Balti night and Wednesday banquet deals are really good value. I'm looking forward to my next visit! 😋

Four of us went here because of a recommendation from a Lichfield local. We were not disappointed. Lovely food and great service. We will be coming back very soon.

Visited for the 1st time yesterday. Myself and the family are very experienced customers of these kinda places. Honestly; the place was fantastic. We had loads of different dishes, breads, rice, starters, they were all exceptional. The service was spot in and atmosphere couldn't have been better. Finding this place was on the back of a recommendation, and we also recommend it to you. Excellent.

I've used Lal Bagh means white tiger by the way, for 4 years now. They deliver to me in Handsacre, sometimes i collect. The food is absolutely gorgeous love my Lamb Rogan Josh vindaloo hot, lots of big chunks of lamb amazing. Very hot n spicy. Keema pilau rice is the best. There's alot of flavours going on at lal bagh. They give plentiful and quality this is why i return everytime. Even my work friends have switched to lal bagh. Love you guys keep up the good work.

I’ve ordered from this restaurant 5 or 6 times in the past couple of years. Always excellent food. Some of the best takeaway curry I’ve ever had. There never forgotten any item when delivering. Prices are very reasonable too. Top notch!

We were motivated by the tripadvisor review. We couldn't eat because the poor service made us run. And the manager asks us if we can't pay for the food. Very unpleasant

Excellent service and food! Whilst the restaurant was busy, this did not impact on great, friendly customer service. Serves alcohol also as many curry houses you do bring your own.

Good food, busy little restaurant. Slow service. Would return perhaps hopefully get a quieter night

Indian restaurant
Eastern Eye - Indian Brasserie offers a diverse selection of Indian dishes, including both goat and chicken curries, in a trendy and vibrant setting. Customers can expect a short waiting time, with the option to indulge in complimentary poppadoms while they wait. The restaurant prides itself on serving the best goat curry in Lichfield, as vouched for by locals. The flavorful curry is packed with various spices and generous portions of meat.
Delicious food. Each and every one of them. The manager - Abdul, served us and he adjusted my curry because I wanted it to be with tomatoes. That was very kind. I loved this gesture. Definitely visit this place when you are In Lichfield 👍

Really nice food, weird naan bread. Staff are a little slow to fetch you things, but very friendly.

My husband & I spotted this restaurant whilst staying in Lichfield. So a quick look at the reviews & it sounded promising. From the moment we walked in, the service was excellent. There were other groups of diners enjoying themselves. The delicious smells made our mouths water. 🤤 The food was amazing, a great choice. Both mine & my husband's meals had succulent meats with deep intense flavours. Scrum! I loved Lichfield & this restaurant is one of the reasons why. Quality food & customer service. 🌟

Working in the area walked in off street Ordered goat curry and few sides. Was told it would be around 30 minute wait. Then to my surprise I was invited in to sit at a table and offered free poppadoms while I waited. Got talking to 2 local guys who reassured me this will be best goat curry in Lichfield. Also had a nice conversation with one of the staff Abdul I believe his name was. The curry can only be described as minted. Loads of flavours and chunky bits of meat. Garlic nan bread was tasty perfect for cleaning sauce from plate. Many thanks for the hospitality highly recommend this place for food. 💪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🍺

Just had a really great experience here. I asked for the chefs recommendation which the waiter told me was the goat special. The food did not disappoint at all. Very good authentic Indian food. Nice ambiance and attentive service. Well done 👏

Excellent atmosphere, very nice and friendly service with clam manner. Food was upto that standard and well tempered maintained and good level of hygiene maintained as well. Impressive

Overall disappointed. Staff were friendly enough and starters were nice but we waited around 45mintues for our mains, which Unfortunately didn't have much flavor but mostly it was the weird Naan bread. They didn't taste homemade or fresh at all. It was an expensive meal @ £68 for 2 and the added 5% service charge was unacceptable. We tried to tell one of the waiters we weren't happy but he just walked off.

It's been a while since we decided to have a curry. The Eastern Eye has always been our go to restaurant in Lichfield as you are always welcomed there like old friends and the food is outstanding. Tonight was no exception. Raz served us and was fabulous, very welcoming, said from the outset that food may take a little longer than usual as there were a lot of customers. (Certainly was for a Tuesday night). However, service was efficient and not served relatively quickly. Quality of food was wonderful, tender, perfectly cooked chicken, very tasty. We had some complimentary ice-cream, nice touch. Outstanding service all-round. Great menu, good prices, 7.5% service charge included. I personally thought that was too low but understand the reasoning behind it.(left additional 10% in cash, which was appreciated and Raz told me that it would be put in the tip jar for all the staff 👍. Abdul, your staff did a wonderful job.
Caroline Morgan — Google review
The food was very good. The prices appeared reasonable at first glance, but after the inclusion of side orders, having to pay £1 for each individual poppadom, plus the extra charge for the dips to go with said poppadoms, followed by mandatory tip it wasn't very good value after all.

It was so busy but food and service was fantastic four of us dined in each having a different meal that we all thoroughly enjoyed, best tasting curry myself and husband have had in a while. We will definitely go again and would recommend.

This is the best Indian food I’ve experienced. We are regular visitors and never fail to take any guests for a meal at Eastern Eye. And, all our friends rave about their culinary experience with us for months afterwards. We have been sampling Abdul’s special dishes and they are truly delicious. Fridays and Saturdays are popular so worth making a booking - don’t risk disappointment.

Firstly, I have to say, the food was amazing. All five of us that went enjoyed the food. However, service was slow... and it only Monday (only two other parties in there) And also, Pricey!!!! 2 poppadoms, starter, main, naan bread and 2 pints of beer worked out to £46 each. Normally pay £30 ish at another Indian Restaurant in the city centre. But if you have a fat wallet, this is for you.

We ordered food at 7.40pm it came at 9.05pm!! Considering we were very hungry by now, the food actually was not tasty AT ALL!!! The raita was just plain yoghurt. Over all very disappointed.

Pub
Restaurant
The Holly Bush is a traditional pub with charming wooden beams, offering both classic dishes and meat-free options. The portion sizes are on the smaller side, so keep that in mind when ordering. While the food is good, it's not particularly exceptional or extraordinary given the prices. However, what sets this place apart is its incredibly friendly and accommodating staff. Rae, in particular, stood out for being very kind and apologetic about any delays (which were beyond their control).
Always a lovely meal, nice attentive staff but not pushy... don't expect to be in and out, plenty of time between courses so you are not rushed. They also take Tesco clubcard vouchers which is an added bonus!

2nd visit here today since December 2022. Both visits attended to swiftly with friendly waiting staff, along with warm and nice portions of food. My only nit pick would be the pigs in blankets ordered as extras. It's simply 2 sausages covered in the smallest piece of bacon, so more like just sausages. Also possibly provide gravy for the customer to pour themselves, as there was no gravy poured on our yorkies which were incredibly dry.

Been here a few times over the years, every time we return it’s with the hope it’s got better. It hasn’t changed one bit, always seems understaffed, staff seem poorly trained and worse don’t seem to like working here. It has the potential to be a really nice pub, I just don’t think there’s the will to do anything with it. We were in at 1PM for lunch, kids and wife went outside to find a table. For some reason the bar lady who looked massively in over her head immediately informed me that the kids aren’t welcome in the bar area but are allowed to come through the bar to leave or go to the toilet. 😂 Then handed me menus (but not kids menus) had to come back for those. Once our family decided on our order I went back into the bar for a lengthy wait, most of the people I saw sitting at tables were looking longingly for some service which wasn’t coming. Ordered my meal and drinks, bar lady then began taking further orders for food and drinks instead of preparing my drinks. I had to wait in the bar for almost 10 mins for these drinks, I couldn’t ask the kids to come and help carry their drinks either as kids aren’t allowed in remember! Food came quite quickly, kids pizza was essentially a microwave pizza and the side of veg sticks looked like they’d been prepared a good week ago. I went with a pub classic “smothered chicken” it was at a guess 1/4 of a chicken breast sliced up. Tasted like processed chicken, 99% sure that was a microwave meal to plate up too. We won’t return until this place changes hands now.

Had a nice quite meal on a Saturday afternoon, there were only 2 people serving so glad it wasn’t any busier than it was. Food was great and cannot complain at all. Will definitely keep returning to this little gem.

Very slow service. We had to queue for a long g time for our drinks wait ages to be seated , wait ages for our order to be taken. The food when it came was good. We were going to have a coffee a d pudding but decided it wasn't worth the wait !! Certainly won't go again in a hurry or recommend it it wasn't even that busy. Shame really because food was good a d staff when they did arrive were pleasant

Went for my birthday 5/5. My husband & I had been looking fwd to the lamb shank shepherds pie since the new menu came out. Boy was we disappointed. The meal looks nothing like how it's advertised (see pic) barely any meat underneath the mash, less than a cm, there was so much more needed to fill the dish (see pic) shank thrown on top & the mash slapped on top. Then a little limp cabbage thrown on the side all for £23 x 2. Couldn't fault other meals ordered. sorry but never again Holly bush. Lost another family as customers

Great food. Fab service. They were able to fit us in after Christmas for a largish table and there was also a birthday celebration already there. You could tell the staff were maxed out but they didn't show it and were on their A game.

Portions are quite small, so definitely take note of that whilst ordering. Food was good, however nothing too special or mind blowing, especially considering the price. BUT the staff are super friendly, accommodating and helpful - we were served by Rae, who was very nice and apologetic about the delays the entire time (obviously something which isn’t their fault!) - It’s worth a visit if you’re popping in for drinks, but probably wouldn’t eat there again. Overall pretty average, but nothing too serious to complain about. 😊😊😊

Family Birthday celebration. The staff were so attentive and friendly, and the food was served without waiting too long. Everyone commented on how tasty their meals were and the children in our party were well catered for. We especially liked that there was a separate gluten free menu with lots of choice for our coeliac diner. Well done Holly Bush , so glad we chose you and we will definitely be back.

My husband and I love coming here for a roast dinner. Amazing quality, service and atmosphere. They allow dogs in the bar area too which is lovely as they provide blankets, treats and bowls of water. It’s beautiful and cosy decor throughout feels so inviting and the staff are always pleasant and accommodating. Today we were served by Eddie and he was extremely attentive and very well mannered despite possibly being a bit rushed.

My husband and I visited for the first time as recommendation, unfortunately we will not be going back. Although my husband enjoyed his meal the same can't be said about mine. I have a wheat allergy and when presented with the menu the choice is very limited. When my meal arrived the portion was tiny. I have never since a jacket potato so small and the salad was the same. If you cannot offer the same value for money on a wheat free option then either reduce the price or don't bother.
Debbie Clarke — Google review
We had Emma and her team dealing with us tonight, and I have to say Emma was exceptional with her service and so kind with any and all requests. She was very helpful and willing to give us the best options and made the experience as joyful and simple as possible. The food was very good. I had the salt and pepper squid and then the pork belly, which definitely felt was worth the price we paid. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. We went on a night where it wasn't fully booked, so the noise wasn't bad, but do think if it was full, the noise might become a problem.

A great pub with real atmosphere. We had a Christmas breakfast here just before Christmas and it was excellent. Emma and her team really understand ”service”

Really lovely pub - we came for breakfast and it arrived promptly and was delicious. It is one of only a handful of pubs in the Lichfield area that I know of that are open for breakfast, and it’s definitely worth a visit for it. Service was personable and Emma was a great host. We would definitely return for Sunday roast and the surrounding area will be lovely as we move into spring and summer.

Modern European restaurant
A converted Victorian corn exchange in the City of Lichfield serves contemporary European cuisine. The restaurant offers a warm and inviting atmosphere with friendly staff. Patrons can enjoy well-cooked fillet steak, delicious pate starters, and flavorful soup. For seafood lovers, there is a salmon fillet served on a bed of risotto that comes highly recommended. The establishment provides an enjoyable family dining experience in a relaxed setting.
I love this place. A friend and I went for a festive lunch. Pate to start, it was beautiful. Turkey dinner for main. Potatoes were lush, turkey was tender and not dry. Big bowl of greens to share between us. Yum. For dessert I had a baileys hot chocolate. I will definitely be returning to dine there. Very friendly and attentive staff.

We visited McKenzies in the city on 17th June 2022 for our 10 year wedding anniversary when we mentioned this to our excellent server we were given 2 complimentary glasses of prosecco which was very kind. The atmosphere here was great and beautifully decorated inside. The food was incredible and the staff were exceptional. Thank you for a wonderful evening. We would definitely recommend.

My wife and I attended a 60th birthday party, it was well catered with really good food. The only problem for myself being disabled, is that the quarry tiled stairs leading up are very slippery. Might I recommend an applied non slip coating. This is of course for people like myself but should not detract from a visit. Of course being an ancient building, if you are a wheelchair user you would not be able to access the establishment.

The food was excellent and very tasty, completely let down with the service. 1. When seated wine glasses plus extra random glasses weren't removed from our table. Also during our time their when ordering a new drink old glass's weren't being removed causing clutter and making it awkward to eat round. 2. Food Wasn't coming out altogether 3. Wasn't asked if we wanted any sauces etc we had to ask for those ourselves 4. A very noisy table with children were seated right next to us. Really could of seated then somewhere more out the way as them and ourselves were the only people in dining (of course children will make noise and be children so don't mind the noise too an extent just not down our earholes while trying to eat a family meal) 5. My husband asked for his leftovers to be boxed up to take home. It wasn't put in a box or a bag of any kind it was dumped onto some tin foil and wrapped up, brought to the table and patted down. This made taking it home very awkward. I really hope this is just a one off as all the other reviews on here look good! Maybe Staff need more training and monitoring. The food was delicious but sadly won't be coming back any time soon.

Had a baby shower here in Nov/Dec last year with afternoon tea for about 20 people. The food was ok, the service really wasn't great and considering the restaurant seemed pretty empty it was very disappointing. Obviously people were arriving at different times but only the first to arrive were offered drinks. It was hard to get hold of wait staff due to us being upstairs so we had to wait for someone to come up or go downstairs ourselves. The sandwiches were just OK, didn't really feel like a celebration based on the food, luckily the company was fab. When the cake stands were brought out we didn't know how many people were supposed to be sharing each of them so some people didn't get the right amount of food. It didn't feel like quality food, just something bought in bulk and defrosted. Previously I've had good experiences here when dining to have a meal in the evening, I don't know if afternoon tea just isn't their thing. Wouldn't recommend it.

First time ever I've eaten out for Christmas Dinner. I was sceptical as who wants to work Christmas day, but the place was packed when we arrived. Smoked salmon starter was amazing and very plentiful, perhaps too big, but that's my choice to eat it all. Turkey dinner was absolutely lovely loads of Turkey and loads of veg. I would definitely consider going again next year, hopefully I can so I don't have to cook and clean again!

How many times have I ordered fish and chips somewhere, paid ~£18 and it's mediocre at best? Countless. Glad to say, McKenzies is different. The best fish and chips I have had in a long time. Good portion size, and very good value at £13. Lovely building (the only point I'm knocking off was that it was a bit quiet at lunchtime). Lovely, attentive service. Will definitely be returning another time for an evening meal!

Waited an hour for food. Had chargrilled chicken with orzo and pesto- no seasoning , minuscule amount of pesto and zero flavour. Chicken cooked beautifully but not char grilled. Had to ask for salt and pepper to give it a bit of flavour. Hubby had a massive burger with no flavour. Chips, onion rings and coleslaw were nice

We've visited Lichfield today, popped into McKenzies on the spur of the moment. Beautifully decorated, clean and tidy. We chose off the specials menu. Husband had fish and chips, I had chicken tikka. All cooked freshly. Waiter very attentive, quick service. We will come again, definitely. Well recommended.

Visited for first time on Friday, for lunch. Service was good and knowledgeable staff. Very clean everywhere. Was cold to start with, then heating came on. Food was very good, lamb curry cooked to desired spiciness. Toilets left a lot to be desired though, felt like stepping into an old pubs toilet (men’s), rather than a restaurant.

Booked for a friends birthday present and very dissapointed. We ordered drinks and had to wait 20 minutes, then over an hour to be served the main course after starters which we had to send back because it wasn't what we had ordered. We also didnt receive part of our order but didnt bother chasing as we would have been waiting all night. The staff that were on (2) were good ,but clearly the kitchen and staff were not able to cope with the amount of people that had booked in etc.McKenzies then put a service charge on top of bill ,which was NOT detailed in booking. For a 90 min meal we were there over 2 and a half hours. Would not recommend booking for any celebration, we will not be going back.
