Waterfall of Oshinkoshin

Mentioned on
Nature preserve
Nature & Parks
The Waterfall of Oshinkoshin is a remarkable natural attraction that splits into two streams and features a staircase leading to the top, lookout platforms, and a gift shop. Located conveniently next to the road with ample parking space, this waterfall is definitely worth the visit. Despite its seemingly small size, its powerful flow creates an awe-inspiring view that will send chills down your spine.
Must see place for a bucket list tick off before you kick the bucket. They have a souvenir shop, clean bathrooms and free parking.

Beautiful waterfall that we happened upon when making our way to the Michi no Eki in Shari. Parking right next to the waterfalls and toilets. Be warned if you go in the winter, the stairs are a bit perilous. But, gorgeous view of the ocean (drift ice if you go in February).
Lina Orta — Google review
Partially frozen waterfall. Be careful on the slippery path.
Boon Teck Kuah — Google review
Lovely waterfall worth a stop if you’re heading in or out of Utoro. Just a couple of steps up and you’ll be greeted by a waterfall of multiple streams. Not a large waterfall but certainly a beautiful one. Worth a short stop since it’s so easily accessible. Ample free parking and no entrance fee.
Samantha Ang — Google review
Just wait awhile for the bus crowds to take their fill of pictures. It is quite a nice breather and rest stop. When the sun sets there are nice rainbows to be observed. I was there in mid of June 2023.

A very beautiful waterfall made up by two streams.highly recommended to stop by.

It is a beautiful waterfall with a nice little souvenir shop. It's a 20 min stop for both the waterfall and shop. Not sure if it's worth it to visit if your visiting by bus but if you do, go in the afternoon when the buses are more frequent. They have bathrooms here.

Taken in early feb. The drift ice have just arrived in shiretoko this season. Amazing view of dift ice from shiretoko. A good flowing waterfall which is rare considering most of the other falls are frozen during winter. A good short stop over when you are entering or exiting shiretoko.. just a few stairs to reach the photo spot. There is a rest room at this stop as well. The steps can be quite slippery in winter. Do advice hike shoes or snow spikes during winter months. Though its just a very short distance up.

Close up look of the majestic falls. Beautiful for photos. Parking is just 200m away, easy stop and recommended. The gift shop offers so interesting products and have beat paws on display.

This is a small waterfall right off the road. A nice place to stop and enjoy its beauty.

Free entry. Beautiful waterfall. Will get wet so make sure your parka or jacket is waterproof. Hard to take pictures but definitely worth it. The steps are very wet and slippery especially in winter where everything freezes up. Reccomend using boots to break ice before walking up. Of course, make sure that you are also anchored to the railway. The view at the top is definitely worth the walk. Would reccomend. There are some restrooms at the side too.
Cyadel — Google review
An impressive waterfall! Right next to the road, you can find a sign and quite spacious parking lot. You may just drop by for a few minute break, but don’t miss the waterfall. I visited on a rainy day and it was magnificent! It seems Oshinkoshin is a small sized waterfall, but you can almost feel the powerful flow right in front of your face! Indeed a chilling view! Next to the parking lot is a road station, where you can find lots of local souvenirs! I recommend Genghis Khan caramel. Not so strange but interesting. So many fun food stuffs to try!

The Roadside Rest Area "Shiretoko-Rausu" is a highway stop that offers a unique experience for its visitors. It boasts of a produce market and dog park, as well as a restaurant that serves mouth-watering local seafood dishes. Their specialty includes grilled fish such as the seasonal kuro hamo. The attached market area sells fresh and reasonably priced local catch like saffron cod and king crabs, which are massive in size.
Very nice experience to see the stellar Eagle and white tailed eagle through this cruise.
Kiran Joshi — Google review
Rice bowl and ramen were both good in their own ways. The rice down was rich and decadent with the sea urchin while the ramen was light and fragrant. The vanilla soft serve with a hint of the sea was enjoyable but not enough to get it again.

Delicious grilled fish - look out for seasonal specials like kuro hamo! Also the attached market/shopping area sells really cheap local catch - we saw saffron cod for 120yen/3fish, molting/molted (? With our rudementary Japanese, some things were slightly loss in translation) king crabs for 980 per crab and they were huge!
Xiaoting Su — Google review
This Michi no eki is purely a gift shop plus restaurant operation. Not really recommended for the "stay overnight" car camping crowd. In winter you can usually see Owashi Eagles on ice floes in the ocean nearby and if the harbor is frozen, they will hang out there waiting for fishing boats to come home with their catch.

National reserve
Shiretoko National Park is a remote peninsula boasting abundant rare flora and fauna, along with breathtaking views of drift ice in the surrounding sea. It is an unspoilt natural wonderland that provides ample opportunities to explore and observe wildlife. However, visitors should note that certain areas may be closed due to the presence of bears. Despite this, many consider it one of the most beautiful places they have ever seen, with stunning scenery and favorable weather on the Utoro side during summer.
It was wonderful to be able to explore more of the National Park in summer. The Utoro side seems to get better weather! A very stunning place with lots of wildlife.

Daniel — Google review
The park opened again on 20 April which was just in time for us to visit while we were in Shiretoko. It was beautiful, absolutely worth visiting. The long route was closed due to snow, but the short route and elevated walkway were open. The elevated walkway is free, if you want to do the ground route you pay a small fee and attend a lecture on how to avoid encounters with bears. The short route takes you past two of the five lakes. Even without the long route, you get a great view and it's still worth the visit. The ground routes join the elevated walkway at the end. The walkway is great for views and is accessible so if you have any issues with mobility it's a great option. If the weather isn't great or is snowy you can rent rubber boots from the Shiretoko Natural Centre for 500yen. We found it really helpful to check @shiretoko_goko on Twitter as they gave more regular updates on the status of routes and the weather conditions. Just popped the tweets into Google translate! Do check in advance if you are travelling over winter (which includes up to the end of April) as the park isn't open all year round. The frozen lakes did look amazing though!
Jo Waterson — Google review
It’s a nice place. But! It’s so tiny. The walking area is quite limited. 90mn trail takes less than 30mn. They really don’t want you to be eaten by bears. But what if you really want to? I would love to have the choice.
Jordy Meow (Japon Secret) — Google review

My brother and I spent a couple days in/around Shiretoko in summer 2006 and had a magical experience ascending Rausu-dake and bathing in the Sandan hot springs alone at night after the climb. It's no wonder Shiretoko is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for this mighty temperate peninsula, jutting between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk, radiates a mystical aura from its stunning wilderness of volcanic peaks, pure waters hot and cold, sun and mists, and verdant forests brimming with wildlife.

This visitors center reminded me of a US national park. Quite nice in every way but one. The gift shop was stocked full of Helly Hansen and North Face merchandise. Not park related, just the standard fare. There are even signs at the entrance promoting these two companies. Total corporate sell-out and very unbecoming for a national park.

I went to a small town on September 2, 2018. There weren't many restaurant options available, but I found Isami Sushi in Rausu, which is located near the seaside. This sushi restaurant is a great choice if you're looking for fresh and tasty food that reflects the local flavors. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the friendly staff make you feel welcome. During my travels in Japan, I came across Mineya, a small restaurant specializing in teishoku meals. With seating options including 3 counter seats and 2 tatami mat seats for groups of up to 4 people, Mineya offers a cozy dining atmosphere. What stood out was the excellent omakase set meal they served. The sashimi was incredibly fresh, the grilled fish had a light and airy texture, while the ohitashi was infused with rich flavors.

When I visited, the elderly owner was running the store by himself. I ordered the omakase set meal, and it was surprisingly delicious. At first, I thought, ``1,300 yen, that's a bit expensive...'' but I was satisfied with the quantity and quality. In fact, I feel like I've gained something. The "delicious cha-shu" salt ramen (regular, 1,100 yen), with an optional egg (an extra 120 yen) was an amazing combo. Nice Ramen place. Order by ticketing machine, English and Chinese available. I had the shio char siu ramen, they give 4-5 pieces of char siu 👍🏻 Warning for those that want to order the spicy ramen, it is not the typical Japanese spicy. Great little place that gets full quickly partially due to the limited options in town. As people who usually don't get shio base, it was the best shio ramen we've had with a rich, milky broth that really sets it apart from the others we've tried. Shoyu ramen was equally as good if not better but that's a personal preference for shoyu over shio bases. We also got chicken neck skewers season with salt and gristles which were great. I noticed that the chef/owner took in the signs and turned off the lights outside at 8:30pm when Google has its closing hours for 10:30pm. Guess it's a small, sleepy town so get in early !

Great yakitori and shio ramen. Chicken yakitori was done to perfection and absolutely tender. The premium pork top up in the ramen, melts in your mouth! Worth the top up for sure. Spoken English was minimal but service was good and friendly. English menu available on tablet. Place is extremely popular. Suggest to get hotel to call and make a reservation. Walk ins were accepted and we tried our luck, but be prepared to wait up to an hour (while enjoying the sunset, so why not). Location is one of the best for sunset in the area.

Came here with friends I met while studying abroad here in Japan. Ordered the spicy miso ramen (the mildest of the three options) and it was really really good, broth rich, noodles al dente, pork was fatty and melted perfectly in my mouth. The spiciness was also just right, hitting all the right spots and leaving the perfect amount of spiciness lingering in your mouth making you crave for more. Food wise, it was so so perfect. But what is up with the attitude? There was another group of caucasian customers there when we dined in, they were treated with respect and kindness, but we were shushed and shooed when we asked politely to switch to seats next to the window. We could all speak Japanese and were respectfully asking questions in Japanese but were met with the owner harshly demanding to know if we were Chinese and spoke very rude English to us the whole time. We are Asians but we’re not Chinese though? We left the restaurant extremely uncomfortable and hurt. What did we do to deserve this kind of service? Such a horrible experience and honestly very very disappointed. A ramen restaurant this famous should not be treating their customers like this. Totally unacceptable.

One of the best ramen I’ve had, and inexpensive. Try their yakitori as well, it’s brilliant and value for money. Do note that if a skewer has (rare) beside it, it’ll be pink inside. They don’t take reservations and have under 40 seats. Be prepared to wait outside at peak time. Smoking allowed inside. Staff speak limited english, they are friendly though! English menu available.
