Tsurugaoka Hachimangu

Mentioned on
Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is a significant Shinto shrine in Kamakura, dating back to the 11th century. It is a must-see attraction dedicated to the god of war and samurai, with historical importance due to its association with Minatomo no Yoritomo and the end of the Kamakura period.
Wow. Very impressed. I stayed at the JR Metropolitan Hotel which is at the end of the street entrance to the temple. A straw that there one afternoon. It was not crowded. I got to catch the sunset. Quite lovely.
Vince Prep — Google review
Very nice red temple at the end of a busy touristy street. The entrance is free and it is really close to town. We have seen people get married at this place. Overall the palace has a huge courtyard with lots of water and greenery. Definitely check this temple out it looks amazing.
Martin Jarc — Google review
Very popular temple for a reason. There is a beautiful promenade between the station and shrine. It is easy to access and has good signs. There are nice toilets and a museum. The shrine itself can be busy, so if you want to go inside and do blessings, be prepared to wait a little. Overall very beautiful and worth seeing.
Laura Light — Google review
Cherry blossoms weren’t blooming yet but there were a lot of visitors when we went there during the long weekend. The main staircase and temple were crowded, but other areas like the pond were just fine. Across the street there’s a paid parking.
Wietzell Marimon — Google review
Went on a weekday but still a crowd, not stroller friendly if you want to go up the steps to the temple, free admission, small fee to see the museum with replicas of artifacts. No photography inside the shrine or museum. Parking available but some lots more expensive than others. Beautiful temple grounds.

This shrine is one of famous spot in Kamakura. They have long history so good to enjoy history and culture more than 1 century ago of Japan. There are long walk way to the main shine. And need to get stairs up to the upper main shrine so better to wear comfortable shoes. Sometimes the wedding ceremony is held in this place so you are lucky if you can see that! You can take Japaneish picture all around the filed so good place to take pictures! You can get by food from Kamakura station! I don’t recommend to come by car because the road is narrow and always pedestrians are walking by the narrow road. So please be careful to fringe in this historical area. Enjoy!!!

Tsurugaoka Hachimangū is Kamakura's most important shrine. It was founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063, enlarged and moved to its current site in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government. The shrine is reached via a long, wide approach that leads from Kamakura's waterfront through the entire city center, with multiple torii gates along the way. The main hall (Hongu or Jogu) stands on a terrace at the top of a wide stairway. The main hall includes a small museum, which displays various treasures owned by the shrine, such as swords, masks and documents. The temple is open from 05:00 to 21:00. The entrance is free. Hongu (the main shrine of the temple) is roughly 1 km from the Kamakura Train Station.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu was amazing! The grand shrine's beauty and peaceful atmosphere were truly special. A must-see in Kamakura for anyone exploring Japan's rich history and culture.

One of the most famous shrines in Kamakura, however I believe it is so overrated. As soon as you go up the stairs you will find a guard. 😬 No photos can be taken. In general I don't like the atmosphere.
Kiara — Google review
It’s a nice Shinto Shrine. I visited during one of the new year vacation days (2nd Jan) , and it was very crowded. Overall a very pretty walkway till you reach the temple. Gives good vibes. There’s also a few ponds where you could sit and chill.
Anay Badavne — Google review
Huge compound surrounded by a few gardens, long flight of stairs to the top but can't go into the temple itself so it's just walking around on the outside. There's also a Maruyama Inari Shrine behind. As I was leaving, I saw some cart stalls set up along the long walk way towards the temple, selling food. I imagine this place to be rather crowded later in the day, am glad I made it there early, for a quiet and peaceful walk through.
Daphne Yeo — Google review
This is the most famous tourist place in Kamakura. It has a wide area consist of a big and beautiful shrine on the top of the stairs, a few small shrines and a beautiful garden with a pond. The garden is so beautiful and peaceful.
Dipak Kale — Google review
This is one of my favorite shrines that I have visited. It’s very unique and also has an Inari shrine as well which reminded me of a game I used to play. Definitely worth the trip if you’re in the area. They do have some hydrangeas there when they are in season but they are not a main attraction. Check it out, especially the barrels and the pond.

There was live music on the Sunday I was there, and you could feed the carp and the turtles. Beautiful ponds with flowers and of course a great temple complex. There was a nice atmosphere, and there is a museum near the shrine. Afterwards I walked to another shrine where people were washing their money which was fun. And then I hiked over the mountain to the Great Buddha statue and ended the dat dining by the beach with a view of Enoshima. I highly recommend Kamakura, you can't go wrong!

During my New Year's visit to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, I was blessed with splendid weather, enhancing the shrine's serene beauty. The food stalls offered a delightful array of traditional treats, making the experience even more memorable. The vibrant atmosphere, combined with the spiritual ambiance, provided a perfect start to the year. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of cultural richness and culinary delight in a peaceful setting.

One of the famous shrine near kamakura. This shrine is famous for wedding. Many people prefer for the wedding due to many reasons and very good photographic areas in the shrine. The pond in the shrine have very calm nature. One of the good and must visit place for the near kamakura. Parking near this area is bit expensive

Back in those times, Kamakura was a politically important area. A lot of history on those very stairs you walk up too, where Minamoto no Sanetomo was assassinated by his nephew. Also along the pathway there are some really good food stalls. Try the gyu-tan. Beef tongue on a stick. So delicious, you won’t want to share!

Beautiful shrine inside Kamakura. Architecture was great and the sakura trees in the front makes the scene gorgeous when sakura flower blooms.

Famous and popular shinja in Kamakura. You can experience new kinds of traditions here in this shinja. Such as infinite circle praying. However, it is not a good place to meditate because of so many people or visitors.
Jeon San — Google review
The main temple that stretches from a height down to the straights of Dankazura. Quite busy with a lot of things happening from wedding shots, to blessings and other small booths for self-serving blessings. A bridge stretching over a pond and river with huge carps. Very beautiful temple, no entrance fee and has come steps to cover when heading up the temple.

Engaku-ji

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Engaku-ji is a Zen Buddhist complex located in the northern part of Kamakura, Japan. Established in 1282, it is the second of Kamakura's Five Great Zen Temples and holds historical significance as it was dedicated to fallen warriors after a failed invasion by the Mongols.
I came to Engakuji in February 9, 2022 because I wanted to visit the grave of Ozu Yasujiro, the great Japanese film director. But the very Temple is amazing.
Leonid Shapovalov — Google review
Short few minutes walk from Kita Kamakura station. This amazing zen temple is build into the mountains and forest. A quiet, serene haven and a beautiful walking excursion learning about the lifestyle of the abbot's and the structures and history around it. It is recommended to come here during spring season and autumn as the view of the place gets so much more enlightened than a normal summer day walk. 500 yen for entry i believe, with two tea houses in the area. One being requiring to walk 100 + steps? to the top for a fantastic view with a chance of Fuji.
Christopher Leong — Google review
My favorite Japanese temples are always Zen Temples. As such, Engaku-ji was no exception. I enjoy the understated architecture, the sense of peace and utter tranquility of these temples, and the focus on the beauty of the natural surroundings. The convenience to Kita-Kamakura station and its status as one of the five most important Zen temples in Kamakura ensures a steady stream of visitors. By visiting on a weekday I was able to avoid the hordes of people and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The giant bell designated as a national treasure is well worth the climb up to see it, in my opinion.
Reginald Williams — Google review
Very scenic, with amazing panoramic view of surrounding hills/mountains. If you are lucky, on a clear day you can see Mount Fuji. This temple is famous for a bell that has a sort of mystical story behind it!

Engaku-ji temple in Kamakura is a serene haven with a rich historical backdrop. The majestic Zen architecture and meticulously manicured gardens evoke a sense of tranquility. A must-visit for spiritual seekers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Engakuji is built into the slopes of Kita-Kamakura's forested hills. It is No 2 of Kamakura's 5 great Zen temples. It was founded by the regent Hojo Tokimune in 1282 to pay respect to the fallen Japanese and Mongolian soldiers during Mongolian invasion of Japana in 1281. The first main structure encountered upon entering the temple grounds is the Sanmon gate (built in 1783). Behind it stands the temple's main hall, the Butsuden, which displays a wooden statue of the Shaka Buddha. The Butsuden was rebuilt in 1964 after the former building had been lost in an earthquake. Further into the temple grounds stands Shariden hall in which a tooth of Buddha is enshrined. Another attraction and national treasure is large bell that stands on a hill next to a teahouse where you may enjoy a cup of tea and Japanese sweets. The temple is open from 08:00 to 16:30. It is next to Kita-Kamakura Train Station (around 100 m). Entrance (Oct 2023) was 500 yen per person.
Anna Krzak — Google review
Close to Kita Kamakura Station. Always love to see the beauty of this place every season. There is a beautiful garden, few hydrangea (summer time) , bamboo, and forest view too. This is a temple, so it is best to keep your voices low in case talking is unavoidable. Entrance fee is 500 yen.

A great temple to visit! Really really amazing. I got to experience watching Japanese kyudo. Watching it was really fun and the staff smiled and waved at me and didn't mind me taking pictures and videos. The temple is a beautiful place. And the dragon on the ceiling of the main building on the roof is beautiful.

Osaki Park

Mentioned on
Park
Nature & Parks
Osaki Park is a scenic mountaintop park that features hiking and biking trails, coastal views, restrooms, benches, and a sculpture. However, the area is poorly maintained and climbing up from the east side can be extremely challenging due to its steep incline. It's better to hike up from the west. At the top of the mountain, there's plenty of vegetation that obstructs your view.
A must see view when Mt Fuji is visible. It's a really really long steep hike from the Kotsubo Kaigan bus stop. Stay hydrated, but be careful because the restrooms are closed at 1600.
Lisa Lisa — Google review
The area is not that well maintained. Climbing up from the east side is super difficult since it is extremely inclined. So it is far better to hike up there from the west. Once you get to the top there is a lot of vegetation that hinders your view.

A beautiful park where you can over look Zushi beach. Located in a rich neighborhood area, you'll also see cool houses on the way. Unless you are driving, to get to the park os quite a hike. I would recommend taking a taxi.

Small park and main viewing area is blocked due to danger of landslides. There is a limited view but if you want more expansive views Hiroyama Park is better
Anna Pinsky — Google review
A must visit when Fuji is visible. Absolutely stunning views. Hiroyama park a few hundred meters to the east has a small platform from which the view to mount fuji is even better. Highly recommend as well.

Louis Canedo — Google review
Quite a small park and not as well maintained as I've started to get used to after seeing all the parks in Tokyo. But the park offers great views of the surrounding area, especially since it's quite high up (which means you'll have to do a bit of a climb to get up there). Not a lot of people here and for animal lovers you can spot some squirrel's here, hawks constantly circle the sky and some cool insects can be found here. If you go for the sunset, bring clothing which cover as much skin as possible, there will be mosquitos. Apparently Mt. Fuji can be spotted here as well.

With the theme of "ruins," national treasures and important cultural properties are collected and exhibited from museums and temples across the country. What's more, you can directly see rare and maniacal paintings, documents, porcelain, and even Buddha's relics that are not usually on permanent display. Paintings from the collections of the National Museums in Kyoto and Nara have been lent to Kanazawa Bunko for this exhibition. The collection of Kanazawa Bunko used to be amazing. It seems that Tokugawa Ieyasu also took Japan's oldest manuscript of the Tale of Genji (Kawachi version), but it has now returned to its original location in Kanazawa Bunko. Additionally, the documents left behind at Shomyo-ji Temple have been designated as national treasures, making me realize once again that it is a valuable facility for Kanagawa Prefecture. I thought it would be a loss if I didn't go to this exhibition, where I could see national treasure-level cultural artifacts in a compact space. Furthermore, the curator's explanation was very easy to understand, and I was able to get a real sense of the flow of history, centering on Kamakura history. There doesn't seem to be any permanent exhibition, and on the day I visited there was a special exhibition called ``Ruins and Images.'' Although it is not necessarily related to Kamakura, as I looked at the images of destruction expressed in paintings and picture scrolls, I felt that I began to see images of the Kamakura period, which had vanished into history. However, the exhibition style is traditional, arranging the exhibits and explanatory text. This may be due to the contents of the exhibits and the atmosphere of the building, but the overall impression is unremarkable. Perhaps because the museum focuses on special exhibitions, I feel that the display of cultural assets owned by the museum is a little sparse. I felt that a little more effort was needed, including the way it was presented. Pretty nasty beach experience. I visited on an August evening to watch the sunset. The view is great, especially seeing Fuji in the distance. But the beach itself is just ... unpleasant. The sand feels and looks like dirt, the public bathrooms are nasty and hot and smell awful. I get the impression that there are a lot of students and young customers, perhaps because it is easily accessible by walking from Zushi Station 💃 That said, the customer base is much milder than the beaches of Kamakura and Enoshima. It has a relaxing atmosphere. The scenery is also wonderful with Enoshima visible in the distance 😍 Also, I get the impression that the beach houses are quite popular, but there are relatively few flashy beach houses like those in Enoshima and Kamakura. Personally, I think it's a bit too crowded and a step behind Isshiki Beach's good taste and atmosphere, but I think it's still a wonderful beach.

a quiet beach, many nice restaurants, maybe little more expensive than usual. if you are lucky, you get a nice vie on Mt. Fuji and Enoshima island with the Sea Candle. cheap to reach by Kaikyo.line

Dirty, murky water. Ughk! Showers only until 4. Good side: not that crowded, there are shops and restaurants nearby (although most have the same menu and a bit pricey), and not really strict (exposed tattoos, booze is ok and freedom to enjoy even when the management already advised to stop swimming when the flag is brought down). A quick summer escape!

One of the best place in Japan. Loved it. Enjoyed the time. Enjoyed the sunset.. Super.

It wasn't a beautiful day, but there were lots of people and stores! There were many summer-only restaurants on the beach. There was also a rental store for boats and other equipment. Plus, there were slides and other attractions out at sea! The beach is safe with lifesavers monitoring the ocean.

Swam there in September 7, 2021. Very good water, clear & warm. Many surfers. Saw some people with tattoos, it's not a problem. The beach looks like Enoshima's, but is smaller than that. Now they do some excavation works there, but it's not a problem. Recommended to have rest & swim

Two weeks ago, I visited friends who live in Zushi, and we visited the beach. It was a cooler Sunday in late April, so there were no sunbathers; however, there were tons of surfers and a lot of sailboats out in the harbour. The sand appears to be black and is very tightly compacted. There is a cool burger joint with live music on Sundays nearby with a great view of the entire beach and bay. I am sure the beach in the summer is amazing.

Quite crowded, probably since it's easier to get to than other beaches in the area. Lots of surfers and people setting up tents to hang and eat on the beach. Sand and water looks okay. A few small cafes and restaurants on the way from the station and along the coast. If looking for more laid back beach, I'd suggest isshiki beach which is a 10-15 min bus ride south.
