Eikandō Temple

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Eikan-dō Temple is a major Buddhist temple in Kyoto, known for its ancient art and the famed statue of Buddha looking over his shoulder. The temple grounds are adorned with beautiful autumn leaves, creating a harmonious scene with the architecture, pond, and garden. Established in 853 by Shinjo, a student of the monk Kukai, Eikan-dō offers visitors an opportunity to refresh their souls amidst the serene beauty of nature and historical significance.
This temple is called "momiji no Eikando ". Yes,the view of maple leaves is really awesome!!

The December month is best for visit here .A colourful atmosphere nearby here. The best season of red maple was already over and around 50% of leaves had fallen down. Yet, it was still worth visiting and you can enjoy both colored maple trees and red pretty carpet on the ground. The precinct was very big and many steep stairs to go up the hill, from where you can see the panorama view of Kyoto city. Another good thing to visit here after the peak season is there are less people and more quiet and peaceful time can be expected.

Went here in the morning during the week and there were only a handful of other visitors. Very calm and relaxing temple. The history and story of the main attraction is very interesting. Also very close the The Philosophers Path, so it's a good place to visit.

Came here at 4pm when the person in the ticket booth was putting the “closed” sign, but still let us go through and buy tickets. We visited the temple when it was almost empty, and it was an amazing experience, much smaller and more personal than other grandiose spots around Kyoto. The interior of the temple was incredible and the different shrines and the pagoda and the well kept gardens made it a truly magical spot.

First time visiting the Eikan-do Temple and open the event light up autumn leaves for night time from 5:30pm. The best time to view around 20-23rd November entry ticket 600yen. Recommended place, this place only 30min from Yasaka Shrine - gion by bus 230yen for one way

Wow! What a spectacular display ,11 out of 10 for the autumn leave foliage. If you have only 2 days in Kyoto in the autumn this is a must to place . We were pretty lucky to catch the autumn leaves . Don’t miss the hike up to the pagoda , this will give you panoramic view of the surrounding .

Visited this temple part of the philosophers walk and this is one of the best. The zen gardens were so calming. You also get a great view of Kyoto when you climb up

Beautiful temple garden. Autumn colours have already started to show during late October. We went on 30 Oct. It’s one of the earliest temples to have fall colours in Kyoto. A must see if you want to see autumn foliage. The grounds are flat and easy to navigate. The actual temple is very serene but there are many steps if you want to visit the higher viewing platforms and pagoda. There’s lift to access the higher platforms.

This is my favorite temple in Kyoto. The building is impressive and the views from the pagoda amazing. If you can only visit one temple, visit this one.
Christian Ardito — Google review
Very beautiful! I came here in the middle of November and the leaves were already red, perfect timing to see the foliage. The temple itself is well-kept and quite large so expect an hour or more of time to spend here. There was a lot of visitors, making walking around quite difficult, but it forces you to relax yourself which is good (especially for someone used to the fast pace of a city life like myself) The only downside is all of the artworks and displays in the temple doesn’t have any English translation, making the entry ticket quite expensive as you can’t understand anything. So if you’re planning on going here, I’d suggest taking a guide with you.
Tasha Yogiswara — Google review
I loved the place. We visited it on a rainy day so everything was empty and the atmosphere was just great. Gardens are beautiful, and it is one of the few places where you can enter the temple and adjustend buildings and just wander around.
Maja N — Google review
A small temple but it is definitely worthwhile visiting. The temple is especially famous for autumn leaves. It is always busy in autumn, so I recommend an early morning visit. Though the location is a bit remote from public transportation, it is located between two big temples, Nanzen-ji temple and Ginkaku-ji temple. It will be a good half-day trip to visit those two temples plus this Eikandoh temple.
Kaz Tak — Google review
This place is a treasure, one of my favorite temples. I visited during a public holiday and it was not crowded at all. The grounds are large, with plenty to explore. The gardens and buildings are beautiful. There are some stairs; I saw an elevator, but I don’t think it connects to the rest of the building. You will have to remove your shoes before entering the temple, so come prepared.
Mariela Seijas — Google review
I must say this is one of the best place to enjoy autumn foliage in Kyoto. The colours are vibrant and unreal. Landscaping is top notch with beautiful temple building with traditional Japanese architecture. There is a viewing area offering the view of the whole place. Crowd is manageable even on weekday. Recommend to visit in a sunny morning. Made a video on it comparing with other autumn foliage sites: https://youtu.be/RxlsAcieFtI?feature=shared

Great Buddhist temple to visit! It's probably one of the most scenic Buddhist temple in the area. The landscaping was beautiful with its mapple trees which were in their captivating red. The temple was amazingly tranquil regardless of the big number of visitors from across the world. Don't miss this one after your walk at the thoughts provoking path of philosophy. You may not attained enlightenment but you should be to acquire some peace and happiness from this visit. A very worthy visit whether you are a Buddhist or no.

Autumn is definitely the best season to visit this temple. Expect a short waiting time to buy tickets and a huge crowd when you get inside. Best to go here early if you want less people around. Main buildings are connected by wooden corridors so make sure to spot where the entry point starts. Hojo Pond has an island in the middle which contains a very small shrine. There's also a nice 2-storey pagoda within this temple.
Anne Fernando — Google review
One of my favourite temples from my whole trip. The autumn colours here were fantastic, and the site has some amazingly decorated buildings to wander through. The gardens have a nice wandering path that allows you to take in the whole scenery peacefully, and there is also a small rest stop next to the pond where you can enjoy a small snack and pot of tea.
Christopher Mills — Google review
Eikando was mentioned in a walking tour book that specializes in autumn scenery. I had not been here before, but was amazed by how well maintained the whole area is, and how beautiful the scenery is, no matter where you look. The best part of this area is the elevation in the buildings: you can walk around the temple and go up a beautiful wooden staircase. I liked it here so much that I went twice in one month. At the end of October they seemed to still be preparing the temple, but in November all decorations were there and all areas were accessible (some rooms were not open yet when I went in October).
Nathalie Ribbers — Google review
Highly recommended to visit during autumn (I visited on 5 Dec) to see the foliage. It’s so beautiful. The temple is huge and I spent 2 hours in it. The path to the pagoda is somewhere in the middle (between the pond and the entrance if I remember correctly), and you can’t access it from the temple where you need to take off your shoes. Note that the climb is rather steep can be tiring.
Jack Lim — Google review
One of the best temples to visit in all of Kyoto. Not only are the main buildings amazingly decorated but they have the crazy beautiful stair ways. Tickets were also really affordable! Highly recommended, maybe even more so than some of the popular temples that is always super crowded.

Enryaku-ji Temple

Enryaku-ji Temple, a sprawling Tendai Buddhist monastery with a history dating back to the 7th century, offers a surreal and peaceful experience. Accessible by driving or taking the train to Sakamoto and then the Funicular up the mountain, this place is enveloped in tranquility with periodic ringing of the peace bell and misty clouds creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
This is a great facility for a historic Buddhism sect! This Historic sect was found more than 1000 years ago. This is the birth place of the historic one. There are many great buildings and temples in this facility. You can walk around to see all of it. The facility is large, located in some areas. You can get up from both Kyoto side and Shiga side. I recommend to get cable car from Shiga side. It takes less time. Enjoy!!
Erine Taguchi — Google review
Maybe I was expecting too much from this mountain temple, but I found it underwhelming. There's not much to see, and what there is is sprawled out in a relatively large are, which is not particularly interesting. There were zero explanations in English. I think it can be a good place for a spiritual retreat (there's a hotel on-site), rather than tourism. Unlike many other temple sites, I won't feel the need to visit it again. But the way up from Yase-Hieizanguchi and the way down towards Sakamoto were nice, as well as the forest all around it.
Claudio Vergari — Google review
The surrounding temples of the temple complex are beautiful and it is a great hike from the first cable car (not taking the rope way) of about an hour if you take your time. Unfortunately, the main temple is under construction and there is absolutely nothing to see there. The other temples were wonderful though and made up for the hike.
M.T. Zwama — Google review
Take Cable car from yase to hiei (cost 900yen). From here you can see the top view and can enter the garden. Then walk down from hiei to enryoji about 1.30 km, the view is so nice. Then you can take the bus to the ground
Graphic — Google review
I wouldn’t recommend this place to foreign tourists! An old man who was selling tickets were very rude and yelled at me because I asked a question how to go downhill without a cable car because a map wasn’t clear. It’s a first time behaviour like this in Japan. I was really tired and I feel that that place only commercial. Don’t waste your time!!! Go to another place. I added a map for people who also tired and stuck there and want just walk and explore the place.

Located in Hieizan, one of the most sacred mountains in Japan. This temple is very significant especially in the history of Japan. Main hall is under renovation but visitors can still enter. I am in awe how structures from its founding in 788 are still present, and how they try to preserve the originalsl structures and artifacts. Visited during autumn of 2023 and the surrounding nature scenery was really beautiful.
Anne Fernando — Google review
The grounds are lovely to walk around as the temples are set up a mountain in the forest overlooking the lake. You will see more spectacular temples that these, but it's an enjoyable place to get away from the crowds.
Ben Madeley — Google review
Spectacular views from the top of Hieizan! But if you're visiting in the winter, make sure you've got the right kind of shoes, the roads will be iced over and extremely slippery! Still an amazing experience though!

Absolutely amazing place. I met and talked with a couple of the Monk's, and they made me feel completely at peace. They also complimented me about my Ora. I actually felt like I had arrived home. Unusually, my eyes started sweating (😢🤭) from the overwhelming emotions I felt being here. Thank you to all the monks (male and female) who made my experience and trip, a life changing moment. Peace to you all.

What a holy place it is. Enryakuji is not one temple but temple complex around Mt. Hiei. The main one is under renovation but you can see inside and roofs as well which usually you can’t see. During my visit, I knew about the two hardest ancient practice there, one is the 1000 day 'Kaihogyo' which is circling the mountain 20km~ per day and other is 12 years training alone in Mt. Hiei, and both have been kept alive by the monks. That’s too impressive and unbelievable.
Kahori Kita — Google review
To get to this place you will have to drive up Mount Hiei North East of Kyoto. This incredible complex is a 45 min drive to 3 historical areas; Todo, Saito, and Yokawa areas. Each are a short distance drive from the next. There are tolls up the mountain, total cost is approximately 2000 Yen. Each area costs approximately 500 to 1000 yen per person to enter and parking is free. Enryakuji, the birthplace of Buddhism in Japan where many monks trained. It was also a famous battle site during the late 1500 civil war of Japan due to its strategic location from Kyoto City. The site is remembered for many things amongst which was the famous massacre of 1571 by warlord Oda Nobunaga. The views of the city on the way up are incredible during the fall, so stop by in the rest areas up or down Mount Hiei.
Ibe — Google review
Best way to get here is by the Eizan Railway and then Cable Car/Rope Way and then walk 2km around and down the mountain. If you can't face the walk back up, then you can a bus back to Kyoto. Well worth the effort (and the ¥1,000 entry price) to see the temple that is being painstakingly restored.

Yakuōji Temple, also known as Temple 23, is a renowned Buddhist temple located in Hiwasa with picturesque views of the bay. Dating back to the year 726, this temple holds special significance as it is believed to possess medicinal powers that can protect people from unlucky years. It is particularly famous for being a yakuyoke-no-tera; that is, a temple capable of warding off ill fortune during these unfortunate times.
Yakuoji is a wonderful temple with lots of secrets and wonders. Feel free to ask staff to help you find them! Like the bell to hit the amount of times that connects to your age. A mysterious tunnel that takes you to "hell". And stairs that will save you from unlucky ages. There is also the option to arrange in advance to go inside and try traditional buddhist cuisine which was so delicious! They will also guide you on different types of meditation, including writing meditation! They are working hard to preserve their heritage, so please go and support them by dropping in

Kōdaiji Temple

Kōdaiji Temple is a serene Buddhist temple in Japan, known for its beautiful gardens, tea houses, and seasonal light festivals. It's dedicated to the historic hero Toyotomi Hideyoshi and features a mausoleum with wooden statues of Toyotomi and his wife, Nene. The garden, designed by landscape architect Kobori Enshu, includes a strolling pond garden and a rock garden.
Difficult to capture with pictures, but this temple is stunning during fall. This is especially so during their night illumination event. I've been twice now and both times were breathtaking. The grounds are fairly large, so you really get to meander and enjoy the views, even if it is really crowded. Still, I think its still worth it for the experience. Within walking distance of other many other famous temples with night illuminations, so its possible to see multiple in one evening. For those of you who collect goshuin, they offer a few different ones at different areas, including one with a glow in the dark portion.

Visiting Kodaiji Temple during the evening hours is a truly magical experience. The temple tours are usually open until 10pm, but it's always a good idea to double-check the hours before your visit. The light show accompanied by music is an absolute must-see during the tour. Don't miss the enchanting bamboo forest trail, which becomes even more mesmerizing at night. I highly recommend this unique and unforgettable experience!

Great. You can buy entry fee of 600yen or 900yen at the entrance without reservation. Not very wide. Suitable especially if you don’t have a lot of time. Maple leaves, the view of Kyoto city, and bamboo forest is great.

I visited the temple many years ago. Had a very good impression about its garden. However I lost the feeling this time. Not sure it’s caused by years difference or simply too many tourists this time. Could even got a piece of quiet time when we were there.

A hidden gem in the heart of Kyoto provides a quiet and serene temple. Plus, not many tourists visit this temple. Entrance fee is 600¥. This temple is very large surrounded by beautiful gardens, pond, and bamboo forests. Well worth a visit especially during Fall!

Visited on 26/10/23. Beautiful serene temple. We visited as other tourists had recommended the bamboo forest in the temple garden and indeed it was really lovely and peaceful. There were only a few visitors so we were able to enjoy the bamboo grove and temple mostly alone. Also encountered a chubby calico cat near the bamboo grove. She was in hurry to go somewhere and didn’t want to stop to say hello. 😂

Wonderful temple to take a walk around at night time. We went during the fall when the leaves were turning red, a time called 紅葉, kōyō. The layout of the temple is very spacious and the scenery is gorgeous. Access is easy by bus from Kyoto station. Although it can get quite busy as with many parts of kyoto. However definitely recommend you check this place out at night if you can. It was a special experience for sure.

great place! we went there pretty late so no tourists were around and we had an amazing time walking through the 'park' and visiting the small tempels. They prepared a little tour around the area, leading through a little bamboo forrest where u can take good pictures at. It's right at the side to the traditional district which also spreads a calming atmosphere. A good place to go to for a relaxing walk and sightseeing.

A temple built by a noble woman in memory of her late noble husband. Lots of other temples in this area of Kyoto. Highly recommended if you visit Kyoto. The place is not flat. Be prepared to climb and descend steps. Worth it!

The way the temple was prepared is a cultural heritage site. Beautiful to visit during autumn season. Suggest to buy tickets in advance as the line can get long at night even during weekdays. Only suggestion is to please remove the advertisements of American Express because it’s so tacky (too American) and out of place in the temple.

(Translated by Google) I went to see the cherry blossoms. As of April 5th, it feels like it's already 2.3% from full bloom. I came in because I could enter the inside of the temple, but you usually have to pay to enter, right???? I heard that parking is free if you park at the back, but I was a little confused so I'll write about it. Go to the front, turn left in front of Anchin, and you can park your car by climbing up the road that says bus parking on the right. (Translated by Google) The oldest temple in Kishu, said to have been founded in the Taiho era, and famous for the legend of Anchin Kiyohime. This temple is located on a stone staircase just a short walk from JR Dojoji Station and has many important cultural properties, including the national treasure Senju Kannon Sanzon statue. The standing statue of Senju Kannon, a national treasure, located in the Treasure Hall (700 yen) was originally located in the main hall (Important Cultural Property). The main hall still houses another Senju Kannon (Important Cultural Property: Hidden Buddha); The national treasure Buddha facing south and the secret Buddha facing north were placed back to back. The Senju Kannon, a national treasure, has a rare combination of Nikko and Moonlight Bodhisattvas as side attendants. Normally, Nikko and Moonlight Bosatsu are the side attendants of Yakushi Tathagata, but I thought it was made into a triad statue in a later era, but it was created by the same era. , and a common production technique is recognized for the three statues, so it seems that this combination was used from the beginning.According to the commentator, there is no other example in Japan, but it is the same in cave temples in western China. There is a combination, and since it is a temple with a long history, there may have been some exchanges via the Silk Road. Along with visiting the treasure hall, you can also listen to Anchin Kiyohime's illustrated sermon, a tragic tale in which love turns into resentment due to betrayal, leading to the death of both men and women. The illustrated scroll used in the sermon was created by the first generation in the 16th century. It is said that the illustrated method has been given for at least 500 years (currently a copy, but the original is designated as an Important Cultural Property and is being deposited at the Wakayama Prefectural Museum).
