Kamigamo Shrine

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Kamigamo-jinja Shrine, one of the oldest Shinto places of worship in Kyoto, boasts a history dating back to the 7th century. The shrine complex is nestled among lush greenery on the banks of a river and features several designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Its spacious grounds are home to traditional rituals like the "Kurabe Uma" horse race during Aoi Matsuri, Kyoto's famous festival.
Multiple large old trees blooming with sakura as of March 31, 2022. The grounds are beautiful.

We didn’t have enough time to do this shrine justice and will definitely return the next time we are in the area, but what we did see was quite impressive. The grounds are quite extensive and I would think you would need a couple hours to enjoy what this shrine has to offer. We loved the beautifully thatched rooves and general atmosphere.

My favorite shrine in Kyoto. It's less crowdy, you can feel the authentic atmosphere.

This review is for the NAKED illumination event (July 2023) in Kamigamo Shrine. We paid hefty 2,500Y per person for the experience. To be honest, in our month long stay in Japan, this is our first bad experience at an event in Japan. The event is just extremely underwhelming and definitely not worth 2,500Y. I would say maximum 500Y per person. 1. The event advertised lantern as selling points. They ran out of lanterns and you have to wait a long line just for them to give you a lantern. 2. The other advertised highlight was dipping your feet into a flowing river with special illumination. The area is extremely overcrowded and there is not enough lighting / effects to speak of. 3. The scale of this event is just very lacking and again not worth 2,500Y

One of the most memorable shire we visited during our 12 days trip. Kamigamo, which dated back over 1300 years ago, is a unesco world heritage site that many tourists overlook. Throughout its rich history, it was mentioned in Genji Monotagari (arguebly the world oldest literature work dated back from 11th century) and a place that holds Aoi matsuri one of the most important festival in kyoto together with Shimogamo shrine. There is a beautiful stream (especially in autumn) run along the shire, and you can try feeding the sacred white horse that serves as god messenger. There are many unique features within the shire ground, such as penguin stone at the water basin and cone shape stone at Hosodono hall waiting for you to explore. And like most shire in Japan, it is free to enter. The handcraft market is being held every 4th Sunday of the month. I also recommend to visit Shimogamo and Kamo River Delta along with Kamigamo.

The park in front of the shrine has beautiful cherry blossoms. There’s also a small stream running through the shrine grounds.

My favorite shrine in Kyoto. Calm and quiet place. I missed the new year's time so many people are coming kamigamo shrine. God bless All the people.

There is no reason to explain about Kamigamo-shrine in the history of Japan. Because so much articles has been dictated in Kyoto, no one is unknown about this historical shrine. No visitor would be disappointed to come here.

Beautiful shrine that wasn't crowded even on a Saturday afternoon :)

A quiet large shrine in northern area of Kyoto city, one of UNESCO world heritages. It is said here is the origin of horserase in Japan and you can meet a white horse🐎
Chiha Kei — Google review
The mythology of Kamigamo Shrine was very interesting to me, who was inspired by the Kojiki. I spent New Year's Eve 2023 to New Year's Day 2024, and many times I saw lightning in the sky and felt Kamobetsu Rai-no-Omikami by my side. This year is a year where it is important to know how to use the power we have.
Mr. Philip — Google review
The monks are kind and respectful, and 2 weddings occurred while I was on the grounds. The moss gardens are spectacular. Much of it is on a hill next to a path which aids in close-up viewing.

Nice temple. Walking arround took us arround an hour. Since we were almost alone there we could enjoy it quietly. We found plenty of details and beauty in this temple, specially the mini-tori gate between the roots of a tree, we offered acorns to the small animals. I liked to find our way to the top of the hill accross the tori gates.

Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shopping Street is a 150-meter-long arcade in Osaka, Japan, offering a wide array of household goods, kitchenware, pottery, and tools. It's the perfect place to find professional kitchen tools and experience Osaka's culinary world to the fullest. The street is lined with stores showcasing an extensive collection of kitchen utensils, cookware, and restaurant supplies. In addition to these items, visitors can also find food shops interspersed throughout the arcade.
***The place to buy Damascus knives*** There are many things for the kitchen in this shopping area. I ended up buying two beautiful Damascus knives. The pricing is much cheaper than what you can find in Kyoto or Tokyo. Visit: 3

All types of kitchenwares, this is the place where you can get the best professional grade knifes. A lot of shops sell stuff which seem to be useful for restaurant or shop owners, e.g toilet signs, table ketchup container set, and the most interesting part : fake food items made from silicon which you see in many restaurant's display items. You'll find some cool wooden or bam oo made kitchen stuffs (ef trays, pots, cups, bowls) not generally available outside Japan.
Avik Paul — Google review
Everything for kitchen ... And more! You can also create your fake ice cream: very nice activity for kids (5+ years old)

Worth a visit if you're in town and not too far away! The pizza, sandwiches, oden, homemade cheesecake and such were all incredibly delicious! Lots of cute stalls serving food and some small knick knacks, the market itself is tiny but lots of character and locals visiting (even on a weeknight) too!
Cindy Chan — Google review
All you can think of for both the professional and home kitchen, and in all price ranges. Especially if you are looking for knives as a tourist, you can find at almost any price point. Beware: you get what you pay for. 25000 yen is a nice starting point for a quality knife.
Håkon Nilsen — Google review
Such a fabulous and immersive shopping experience!! Set aside the whole day for this. Great eclectic food and fashion. Loved it!!
Buyisiwe Shongwe — Google review
You may lose your mind if you are at all interested in kitchenware, cooking, baking, barware, plastic food, cooking appliances, utensils, KNIVES and millions of other items. Several of these stores alone would be a world destination for chefs and cooks, and here they are on a covered shopping street conveniently together.
Lin Feng — Google review
Interesting location to equip your home dining experience with Japanese serving, cooking, and decorative dishes. Though there is a lot more here, the equipment stores are a shopper's delight

Great place for beautiful Japanese glass, cups, bowls, knives, kitchen items, gifts, kimonos, yukatas, and fantastic food in the area as well.
Chris Pugh — Google review
Really cool street selling mainly cookware such as knife's, cutlery and ceramic bowls. Plenty of beautiful designs and prices weren't too expensive. A couple of souvenir shops too but mainly cookware.
Cecilia Tran — Google review
Great street to find all sorts of cooking items and decorations for gastronomy. Highly recommended. You can find anything from cutlery, clothes, signage, cookers to restaurants here. It is easy to reach and always worth a visit if you need anything regardless of adding to your kitchen or preparing to open a restaurant. During a festival on Sports day (9th of October in 2023), they recreated their famous Taiyaki, which not only looks good, but actually tastes like a nice Taiyaki cake. The Taiyaki is 1m in length and around 11.68kg total.

Loved this street. So many things to see and learn. Lots of shops that allow a glimpse into Japanese culture and their way of living.
Olivia Sharp — Google review
This is Osaka's version of Kappabashi. About a quarter the size with a lot of more big shops who sell many different things instead of a shop specialised in one thing. A lot of them also sell all sorts of traditional bbq and cooking equipment. Prices are competitive compared to Kappabashi, some are even cheaper. Some big shops offer tax free. But unlike Kappabashi, there's no tax free scheme for the area (in Kappabashi, there is a tax return counter where many shops join the scheme, so you can combine purchase 5500yen+ from all those shops then claim the tax feom the tax counter).
Line S — Google review
Liked all the kitchenware shops. Got some good gifts and dishes for our selves better prices than we’ve seen elsewhere- found the knife shopping better in Tokyo’s equivalent but this was better for kitchenware
Chris Loring — Google review
Japanese knives and all kitchenware you can buy. A lot of stores also offer Taxfree upon payment
Christelle Pestano — Google review
A haven for anything and everything related to kitchenware, this is a one-stop centre to get those goods. It might be just one long street but its packed to the brim with varieties of kitchen stuff. From chopsticks to pans to knives, you will be spoilt for choices as you browse around here. Make sure you compare pricing cos some of the same items might differ in price depending on which shop you go to.
Andrew Ang — Google review
The place we headed to twice. The first time it was 3rd Jan. A lot of shops closed due to the new year holiday. However, luckily, the knife shops were opened and we did find couple we really like. We backed to the street at 5 Jan. At the time, most shops opened! And the street was incredible. If you are kitchen stuff lovers you will love this street. You can find any equipment or utensils or glassware you want. Just enjoy!

Gifu Castle

Sights & Landmarks
Gifu Castle is a reconstructed 16th-century fortress that boasts a wealth of historical significance and breathtaking mountain vistas. This must-see attraction in Japan can be easily accessed by cable car, with a short 15-20 minute hike to reach the castle itself. It's an excellent destination for families, with children sure to enjoy exploring its many fascinating features. The Ukai festival on nearby Nagara river is also well worth experiencing.
It is a reconstructed Castle but it has lots of historic value and what a beautiful view of Japan. A must see, the Cable car made it easy to get to with a 15-20 min hike. The children liked this caste.

(Translated by Google) The castle tower is scary on a windy day. The approach to the castle is sandwiched between cliffs and is scary. As expected, it was a castle on the top of a mountain. The inside of the castle is not very large, and the stairs are just normal stairs. It's not a typical steep staircase. There are only two options to visit: ropeway or mountain climbing. There will be some walking after getting off the ropeway. I think measures against the cold are essential.

One of the well-known castles in Japan! You need to climb a bit after getting off from the cable car. However, it is worth climbing the mountain for 10-15 minutes! Amazing view and nice cafe-restaurant. You will enjoy one of the greatest views for sure! Need to pay small money for entrance of the castle and the zoo!

The most beautiful place you should have visit in Gifu. At some moments, you can see the moon right above the castle, and also you can visit Ukai festival in Nagara river.

Gorgeous. Warning, there are a lot of steps to climb even after you get off the ropeway at the top. The views walking up are stunning, as are the views from the veranda on the top floor of the castle.

Climb "Mt. Kinkazan" to reach Gifu Castle towering at the top. The trail "Meiso no Komichi" is 2.3 km long and can be climbed in one hour. For your first visit to "Mt. Kinkazan," we recommend that you walk the trail instead of taking the ropeway. The view from the top of the mountain is spectacular. Once inside the castle, you will feel like "Nobunaga Oda.

(Translated by Google) I visited for the first time on New Year's Day. We had to wait a while to park at the parking lot at the foot of Mt. Kinka, which is probably the closest to the ropeway that takes you up to the castle. There is a trekking route to Gifu Castle, but you can also easily get to the castle by ropeway. However, there are some parts of the walk up stone steps to get to the castle, so it may be a little difficult for people with weak legs. Please be careful when going up. On the day of our visit, some people were preparing to climb the mountain, and although it looks quite tough, I would like to climb it someday. The weather was nice on New Year's Day, so the view from the castle tower was spectacular. From Nagoya Station, you can see views as far as Mt. Ibuki and Mt. Ontake. We ate the famous dango at a shop along the way. You can enjoy both sweet and soy sauce. I highly recommend it when you go.

Awesome lookout and reproduced historic castle that overlooks the Gifu area. Very scenic and picturesque panoramic views from the observatory deck and castle. Take the cable car up or you can hike 2hrs. Highly recommend cable car.

Historical mark in Gifu city. You can take the ropeway to the top, very nice view of the city. Not exactly a castle more like an observation tower. Lacking more historical situation. You can learn more about Nobunaga and Japans history at the Historical Museum but anyway can’t skip this monument if you visit the city.
Carla Valverde — Google review
A good view to see the whole area. In addition, the small hiking trail is also great to visit and feel the favor from the woods and mountain. Rope car is just no more than 1000yen very worth to visit.

It's a rare castle, so please climb it at least once. It was nice to have materials about Nobunaga in the castle.

Amazing place! The view from the top is breathtaking. You can see the range of hills along side the hill of castle and also the hill and mountains of gifu. You can see the buildings of Nagoya as well. There is gifu museum as well. Another Ticket to go inside castle & museum is required. There is restaurant and toilet with bridges and stone steps along the pathway. You can either hike or go through cable car.
Stha. Modular. — Google review
It’s a very good place to build a castle. You don’t have to take a chairlift if you can walk two and a little bit more kilometers but if you decide to chairlift be prepared to walk uphill a bit more. Also if you want to go into the castle itself, that’s a couple hundred yen you have to pay. Which is totally worth it anyway the view on the top of the castle is spectacular. The breeze is so refreshing you also have to pay a couple hundred yen for the museum as well. I don’t know what it’s like because I didn’t went there. Be prepared for our very long line for the chairlift though, could be 30min or more

Lovely views. We took the cable car up and hiked down and it was a wonderful day. The castle itself has some interesting artifacts but the interior structure is unimpressive. The exterior is very pretty though. Worth the trip!

Very impressive castle and amazing story behind it. If you are in this area or you are wanting to see any Japanese castle, this one is near the top(literally). You can choose to walk up this mountain and see the beautiful nature views along the way or pay a small charge to ride the rope lift car. Or, walk one way and ride another is an option as well. It is great to learn of this story and also see gifu and other areas of Japan from high on the castle top.

Super helpful staf and good service. The one who attended me was Mr Yo Koitani. He was very patient with me in solving my problem with tickets to Kawaguchiko. He offered me various ways to go there and we managed to come up with a cheaper option. He also helps to buy the ticket for me. Very fluent in English so it was easy to understand. The place was easy to find too. Just go out of the elevator at 3F and it was right there in front of you. There is also a prayer room and luggage storage.

Kyoto Tower is just above the tourist information center. They're selling a lot of different rail passes that you can collect on the spot. The staff speaks fluent Mandarin and English. Head to the counter and ask for some coupons before heading to any destination. I've received a free entrance ticket for me and my friends to Kyoto Tower.

I'm very thankful to Yo Koitani San and team for helping me to address my concern this afternoon (25/12)! Not only they are super helpful in providing the best recommendation on how to utilise my kansai wide area pass, they were also very meticulous & patience throughout my visit together w my aunt. We were extremely grateful as Yo Koitani San solve all our issues as well as provided his assistance in helping us to reserve the shinkansen ticket. You guys are the best!

Came here because we need to get mobile data. We were served by Ms Asami Yabu. She is helpful, informative and speaks english fluently. Not only did she advise us a suitable plan for our needs, she also gave us nice local recommendations of where to go in Kyoto and Osaka. It felt like speaking to a friend than a guide and made for a good start to our tour around Kansai. Thanks for your warm hospitality, Yabu san :)

I visited the tourist centre for guidance on how to get to Mount Hiei. The officer who attended to me, Asami Yabu, was extremely helpful and advised me to take the trains and cable car via the Kansai Thru Pass rather than the direct bus which would be faster but a lot less scenic. It wasn't easy to direct someone who's never been to the area but she was patient and her instructions were clear. I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful views going and coming back frm Mt Hiei. TQ for helping me enjoy Mt Hiei so thoroughly, Asami!

A townscape with rising udatsu trees

Mentioned on
The Udatsu Wall Historical District is a cluster of Edo-era residences in Mino, Japan that boasts ornate details and a variety of shops selling hand-made items such as sake, paper goods, and sweets. The area features unique Udatsu ornamental rooftops and is perfect for leisurely walking while admiring the beautiful architecture. Visitors should be cautious about their spending as the articles sold are exclusive to Mino but not overpriced.
Mino city in Gifu prefecture. Not far away from Nagoya. It is the center of Washi, Japanese handmade paper. If you like old japanese houses, streets, art -this is the place for you. Check the time of lantern festival. It is beautiful scenery in the evening. Even if you want to buy originally made in Japan souvenir- come here. Smell of the old shops, handmade things -knowledge passed from generation to generation. We were on 'Knife festival' in Seki, Gifu prefecture (it is every first weekend in october) it was very hot day(last year too), and we wanted to refresh ourself on the river. We took this way and it was the best choice. So if you go to Seki for the festival, in the evening should come here and see the lights! (if you want to see both festivals, first Seki, then Mino in the evening) , but any time of year should visit this place.
Petar Stankovic — Google review
Well preserved streets here, with lots of history on display and helpful friendly people. Plenty of paper crafts and shops to enjoy, and historical buildings to look around. There is ample parking nearby, so no need to drive down the street. There is also some good sake to be found here. Spend the day and enjoy a visit. Recommended.
Darren S — Google review
Beautiful area to walk around in. Not only are there Udatsu ornamental rooftops, but there are quite many shops in the area as well. Be very careful, because you will spend a lot of money. The articles are not overpriced. But they are almost exclusively hand-made, and you can buy them nowhere but in Mino. There are beautiful paper items, like fans, notebooks, covers and all sorts of things, there is Sake, Japanese specialties, even Western-style confectionery, as well as Japanese confectionery, which looks similar to Western, but tastes much different. Come to Mino, lose yourself in the town center. Then go to the lookout building for a great view over the city and its surroundings.
