The Jomon Sugi is a large tree that stands over 30 meters tall and is found in the forests of Yakushima. Thetree has many strange and mysterious features, including its gnarled trunk, large roots, and twisted branches. The tree is said to be a sacred site used by the ancient Jomon people for ceremonies and religious rites.
Magical place. If it seems hard to get to, you have been mislead by your GPS. I visited the Jomon-Sugi in Yakushima which was also incredible, but this one (these two?) are equally impressive.

Very pretty approach. Repairs to the trees are intriguing. Lovely area.

This is on the “to go list” by the local town and I have visited this place on numerous occasions over the last 40 years. But I can think of better ways to utilise my time than walk around this tree. Perhaps if you’re religious, there maybe a deeper meaning but not sure I would even recommend my friends to visit here if they came all this way to Otoyo.

March 2024 The weather was perfect, and although it was around 4:00 pm, the sun was shining and it was beautiful. A cedar tree stands divided into two. It is said to be called "Northern Great Cedar" and "Southern Great Cedar." The circumference of the roots is about 20 meters, and the height of the cedar tree is about 60 meters, making it the tallest cedar tree in Japan. (Translated by Google) It's a very wonderful mountain. There were landslides along the way, and I felt that it would be difficult to maintain the mountain trail. In addition, there are some roads such as Gorogoro Haccho that it would be difficult for an amateur to enter by mistake, and there were some places where it would be better to look at the mountain map to determine the direction because the information boards are wide, so it may be a little difficult for beginners. I think it's too high. If you climb with someone who is used to mountain climbing, you can enjoy it especially during the autumn leaves season. You can go to the top by car, so if you just want to get to the top, you can drive to the top and enjoy camping while you're at it. There were some very beautiful waterfalls along the way, and a lot of negative ions were emitted. It was also the lodging where people would stay on the third day after leaving Kochi Castle when they were transferred to Sankin.
