Etajima

A cluster of islands in the Seto Inland Sea, Etajima is known for its coastal bike paths and rugged mountain hiking trails. The disused gun battery near Hodaiyama peak is renowned for sunset-viewing, and the Naval History Museum has artifacts from Japanese WWII battleships inside a former military academy. Dining options range from modern fast food to sashimi and oysters in quaint, quiet fishing villages.

Okuboji Temple, also known as Kechigan-ji, is one of the 88 Shikoku Buddhism temples on the pilgrimage circuit. The temple is located in the southern base of Mt. Nyotaizan and has a beautiful view with colored leaves in fall.
Even with cloudy day, we enjoyed the autumn foliage very much.. and also the Udon at Yasoba-an 🥰
Irene Lim — Google review
A beautiful place but a little touristy. I completed my 88 temple journey after 30 days and loved seeing the main hall. The place is gorgeous and had beautiful trees everywhere.
Mike Bottema — Google review
Easily the most picturesque temple we have visited among the 88 in the pilgrimage. Beautiful autumn foliage and ancient religious buildings make for fabulous photo ops.

The "end of the road" of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, but this is just the end of the circle you traveled as a pilgrim. And many more will continue the route again. Here you will find many staffs left by pilgrims who have returned to their former lives, and where if you have completed the pilgrimage on foot, you can receive certification as a pilgrimage ambassador. For an historical note, he main deity of this temple is Yakushi Nyorai. Yakushi Nyorai is the Buddha of Medicine. “Yakushi” means, “medicine teacher”. He is typically displayed as holding a medicine jar in his left hand and the right hand is raised in a “fear not” position. Sometimes the left hand is in a “wish granting” position instead.

Awesome autumn sights. Took me some time to get there by community bus. ¥500 yen one way. Nothing much to do there except enjoy the view and pay for good luck.

This is the number 88 temple that is the end of the Shikoku Henro pilgrimage. Otherwise it's another example of a historical and beautiful temple in Shikoku Japan. It's easy to get to by car, however allow some time for the drive.

Itsukushima Jinja

Mentioned on
Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
The famous orange gate "floats" at high tide at the Itsukushima Shrine, famed for its innovative layout and beautiful architecture from the Heian period. The shrine is known for its respite after a hectic morning of sightseeing, as well as its close proximity to some of Japan's most stunning scenery.
Second time I’ve been here and it’s just so beautiful. There’s plenty of cool places to stop and just sit and look at nature or the shrine. Or places to stop and have tea or a beer. The deer are of course lovely to see too. Recommend having a walk up the streets into the mountains a bit and off the beaten path.
Brandy Nicole Easter — Google review
Sadly the tori gate was still under renovation and covered (not expected to finish till December 2022), but I've waited 3 years to see it and will be returning to home country soon so I went. The shrine itself was beautiful over the water, and so many deer in the area. Though the "picture opportunity" to get the tori gate was a loss, the experience was still worth the effort to see it.
Vanessa Martinez — Google review
Nice Island. It takes 10' in a Ferry to get there from the JR station (not the one at the Peace Memorial but another one that 's 40' in tran from there), and it's included with the JR Pass. No need to get tickets in advance. The whole island can be visited in one or two hour. Recommended to go there in the afternoon to catch the sunset.
Fernando Perez — Google review
Definitely worth the trip one of the most iconic places you can visit in Japan. Plan on spending some time if you want to see the gates at high tide and low tide. At low tide the gates can be walked to and under. High tide it is the beautiful pictures you see all over the internet. There are plenty of shops to see and places to eat. Just be aware that many close around 530-600pm. Night viewing of the gate is great just don't come without food plans as many places will be closed. The popular local dish is oysters, they are prepared almost every way imaginable.
Clifton Moy — Google review
one of the most beautiful things I've seen in Japan, an island full of beauty and culture. everything was so beautiful and delicious, deer walking everywhere. Without a doubt one of the greatest beauties of Japan. If you have the opportunity, don't miss it, it's serious. 1 day is too little to explore the island, take your time
Raphael Kuchak — Google review
Beautiful place to visit. You can access the island using the ferry (works for JR Pass and Visit Hiroshima Tourist Pass). Both high tide and low tide have their own charm. You will get better pictures (standing much closer to tori) during low tide, which is typically in the late morning around 10am to noon (in end-March). Be careful of the deer - they will do anything for food, even get aggressive.
arish020 — Google review
It’s one of the most famous shrine in Japan. You can enjoy there only 300 yen. After tour in the precincts of the shrine, you must go to shopping streets. Many shops and restaurants serve their specialty.
???? ?????? — Google review
The shrine that floats. Definitely a must visit because it’s so beautiful and there’s a lot of stuff to see and visit. Nearby there’s shopping street and shops that sells a lot of souvenirs and foods. The shrine itself is pretty crowded so make sure to visit very early as it can get to a very long queue as it reached noon. If you have the time, there’s also a small boat that can take you up to the gate for only 1000 yen/person
Monica Rose — Google review
Sadly i just came here on the mid-day and it is raining! The advantage is: lesser people and explore like a boss. 1. It will be best if you can come in the morning or the mid-day and explore all the shrines here. 2 hours is not enough to stroll around Miyajima since so many location to spot and enjoy the calmness. 2. If you are from Hiroshima Memorial Park, and planning to take speed boat (near a cafe that sells oranges/tangerines), don't buy round ticket (4000 yen). I missed my return boat due my enjoyement in the island. Many exquisite building and delicious snack here and you will forgot the about the flow of time here.
Djoko Adiwinata — Google review
Lovely ferry trip across to the Island. Easy flat walk out go the gate and temple. Good shops and places to eat, buy they do close at around 5 to 6pm. Watch out for the deer as they will try and steal anything you are holding. Sunset at the gate is spectacular.
Carolyn McKay — Google review
The shrine shines like a star in the heart of the world visitors. One of the most iconic scene of Japanese image. You won't regret it if you see it for yourself in person. To feel the sacredness, better come off the rush hours - like early morning or late evening. Or you'll be overcrowded the tourists around the world.

We took the small boat from near the peace park and had an amazing experience! The sun was slowly setting when we were there and the atmosphere was amazing! Even Though it is a tourism spot, it was really calm and beautiful over there. And fun fact, dears are randomly walking around and are interested in food from you hahhaa

This was my 4th time visiting, but no matter I really enjoy visiting Itsukushima. Note to those planning a visit, the famous Floating Torigate is covered up for renovation. No set date when this will be completed, so check out their website for the latest info. We missed the Tori, so I used my awesome photoshop skills to crop one in! Bam - problem solved 😅

We were able to experience all tides for this shrine, which was amazing to witness. When we joined in the morning, we could walk directly to the shrine. In the afternoon, before we left, we could take pictures of it in the water. This has to be one of the top spots of Japan for magical moments and perfect pictures.
Stephan Wagener — Google review
Very lucky to visit on a wonderful sunny day. A bit hot, but worth it. I was surprised as to how bold the deer are here. They will literally stick their nose in your bag and take food if you have it. 😂
Lex Kozure Ōkami — Google review
Beautiful place to visit for a day. The shrine is beautiful. The whole island is worth exploring. The coffee ice cream was absolutely delicious. They now charge 100 yen even if you have the JR pass, but I think it is worth it to help preserve the place.
Anthony Lorbach — Google review
A great day out and definitely worth the visit despite the crowds. The shrine in the water is amazing to see but the highlight for me was the Daishoin Temple. It’s about a 10minute walk past the famous O-torii Gate, far less crowded and a real hidden gem with so much to see.
Matt Green — Google review
Not to be missed! Do check the high/low tide hours online, and visit as per your preference. I went after 4pm to see the shrine and the gate with the high tide. It was still very much crowded. Right after sunset, the place almost emptied and it was beautiful and peaceful until dusk.
I Z — Google review
Stunning views and a nice half day trip from Hiroshima. Definitely would have missed not coming here. Taking the JR Ferry is very simple. If you take the right JR Ferry and stand on the right side, you can also take some nice pictures if the Torii from the sea
Georg — Google review
It's as wonderful as you see in wallpapers. We visited both during lowtide (dusk) and high tide (daytime). It's a completely different experience! The water goes all the way to the shrine so the gate feels very far away. But at night, you can touch the gate if you really wanted. The nighttime view with the city as a background is awe inspiring.
Guy Lin — Google review
Well worth the ferry ride over. There are deer on the island and many tourist shops and good food as well as the gate on the beach. Just before sunset on a clear day is a perfect time to come.
Becky — Google review
A beautiful place to visit You see the gate from the ferry and it is a short walk from the pier. The queue moves fairly quickly and movement around the shrine can be slow depending on the number of visitors. A must when visiting Miyajima Island.
Gary Jelks — Google review
A very beautiful shrine with a tori gate in the middle of the sea. The place is surreal and very beautiful, pictures dont do it justice. You need to go here personally to appreciate the beauty of it. You can take the nearest ferry near the island to get here cheaply.
HapiTravels — Google review
Possibly the most famous Shinto shrine for tourists. Beautiful from all angles. At high tide it makes for great photos as it appears to float. At low tide you can see the entire structure. There's a shrine just near the main Tori Gate with ¥300 entrance fee, which has a pier to take photos of the Tori gate. It also has lots of deer everywhere which was a lovely surprise.

Kamado Shrine

Kamado Shrine is a serene and picturesque Shinto shrine located amidst trees with various sculptures, walking paths, and seasonal foliage in Japan. The place is very popular among locals during the red leaves season; however, visitors must endure long queues to park their cars. The maple leaves are beautiful but not entirely "red" enough as expected. Despite being small, tourists can explore the entire place within one and a half hours easily.
Shrine with scenic view, get to watch the best and most beautiful sunset here, right behind the souvenir shop. You can get to see Demon Slayer related art here too. You can take bus to reach at the bus stop right infront Fukuoka Bank at Daizaifu Station.
John Oh — Google review
Due to the fall foliage, the shrine was very busy on a Saturday morning. However, the shrine is very small in comparison to many of the other Shrines in the area. While the fall foliage was nice, with all the crowds and not having too many maple trees, it didn’t really seem worth it. 10 minutes is all you really need for this shrine.

So.. this place is well-known for love. Either true love searching or long love life. The charm selling round room is gorgeous. You shouldn't miss it at all.
Pirat KT — Google review
Went for the Night Up Dazaifu event and it was beautiful. Definitely recommend. Except if you take the city bus to get to the shrine, the bus stop is on the roadside opposite of the train station. Not by the sign in front of the station. We learned that the hard way and had to walk!
Faith Minter — Google review
At 12.00 pm, cloudy, windy and it was nice weather. Lots of couples, family, single traveller and people come here to pray for their relationship. Amulet was cute and so I got fews.
Garuzo — Google review
Far better than the tourist trap at the station. Very beautiful and well kept. Take some beers, go at night. Super spooky and lit just enough to wander around. There's an inexpensive shuttle bus that runs from the train station.
Brent Baymiller — Google review
Visited on 20/11/22, a Sunday afternoon. The car queue to the parking lots is long (at least 30 mins wait) and the place is popular with locals during red leaves season. Maple leaves are pretty but seem not "red" enough. The place is quite small so can visit the whole place within 1.5 hours.

- 10-15 min from Dazaifu Station by bus - not crowed - nice scenic - unique omamori - only thing that seem to related with "Kimetsu no Yaiba" is Omamori pattern
Amachi Sajima — Google review
Took a bus near the Daizaifu station to a mountain to reach this temple. The bus fare is 100 yen and though it is a small temple, i love the view from the temple. Even in early December we can still see some colour leaves. I learnt this temple is popular since it has the same name as the last name of Tanjiro Kamado from Demon Slayer. Worth a visit.

Autumn leaves are very fascinating here. I go in late November. The light up after sunset is also very beautiful.

The Kamado shrine is famous for inspiring the main character's name from Demon Slayer. I went there on the beginning of spring and the cherry blossoms are beautiful. Photos taken on 6/3/2023

Some says the shrine is the inspiration of the main character's family name Kamodo of demon slayer anime. The shrine is rather small, the good luck charms are beautiful checkered pattern but rather expensive. Fortune telling is 100 yen.

Beautiful small shrine. Very well maintained. Famous for it being the inspiration for the Demon Slayer anime. Definitely worth a visit. I went there after hike to Mount Homan and were able to watch the sunset, it’s very picturesque.

shuttle bus right at the train station, very convenient. nice environment, greens, reds, colors all around
CS Leung — Google review
Maple leaves are pretty but not as concentrated as I thought. The bus going to the Shrine is very small in size, and at 30-min interval. I have waited 1 hour per way since I cannot get onto the bus with long queue.

There is no sunshade area, so in addition to UV control, you will also need a parasol or tent. There are no children's play equipment, so I think it is essential for small children to bring their own items. In either case, be careful of your manners...
