Aso Roadside Station

Mentioned on
Toll road rest stop
Rest stop
Roadside station Aso is a toll road rest stop that offers picturesque views of Mount Aso and a variety of local specialties at its farmers' market, including pickled takana and soft ice cream made with Aso milk. The parking lot is free and provides amenities for sleeping in cars or campers, such as electrical hookups and sinks. Additionally, there is a local farmers market near the JR Aso station that offers fresh products in addition to the famous ice cream and milk.
This is a best place to enjoy Aso’s agricultural products. I have enjoyed lot of delicious food here and the milk is the best!
Uz Chen — Google review
Wow this was a great shop with the parking. The weather wasn't nice but many people inside and outside. There was a big bathroom beside the shop separately. The EV charging area and cyclists area were too. We saw many camping cars parking there for the rest. There were many fresh veges and fruits outside, local food, drinks, radio eat snacks, crafts, and Kumamon stuff were inside. There was a room with the TV on to eat after buying the bento box, snacks, or drinks, which was a great idea to attract the people to come back. We just love that place!

On of the better road stations with many local products. Many amenities for people who sleep in their cars/campers (electrical hook ups, sinks, etc) and also in a beautiful area!

Delicious food is sold mainly in the Aso region. I recommend soft ice cream made with milk, which is a specialty. The parking lot is free and you can use it for a break during your trip. Have a nice trip in Japan!

Shimonada Station

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Shimonada Station is renowned for its stunning sunset view and ocean scenery. Despite its popularity, the station remains impeccably maintained and tidy. The station boasts a beautiful building that is well-kept and clean. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque view of the sea from this famous station. Although weather conditions may affect one's experience, it is still worth visiting for the panoramic views alone.
The sunset view from the station is amazing. surprisingly very famous place. Very well maintained and clean station. The ocean view from the station is really good and worth visiting.
Akshay Kale — Google review
Loved every minute I spent there. Very picturesque. I went at 4:30PM and just kept taking pictures till sunset. Be mindful of the trains (Google Maps & NAVITIME for directions) Remember to get return tickets as well (if you're heading back to Matsuyama) If you're lucky, the coffee place is open (their opening times are kind of random)
Bob Ricardy — Google review
Was quite a pleasant experience! Try and match the arrival of the ‘monogatari’ trains! Only 5-6 parking spots available.
Viraf Patrawala — Google review
Unfortunately the weather was fine, but I was able to enjoy the time with a good view. The pretty station building is well maintained and clean.
yoshihiro moritake — Google review
Upon my visit to this incredible place, the weather was cloudy and I wasn't sure if it was worth the journey due to the distance and limited train availability. However, I can confidently say that the experience was more than worth it. The scenic views were stunning, but what really made the visit special was the heartwarming presence of the elderly volunteers. They were extremely kind and helpful, taking the time to chat, explain the area, assist with photographs, and provide tips for photographers. As the train arrived, they even waved flags and hands, leaving a lasting positive impression. Despite the small size and lack of amenities, this has become one of my favorite places in Japan due to its immense charm and warmth.
Nene — Google review
the closest station to the sea in whole Japan. it is placed like 30-40 minutes drive from Matsuyama. it was really pleasant driving the road to the station with the good view on the sea. only for the station, do not expect much. it is just a station. but including the road, it is worth going.

Famous local JR Train Station featured in many travel magazines/ websites as closest to the sea Great Sunset view of the Inland Seto Sea suggest to come before Sunset
Streak — Google review
A station next to the sea with superb view, no matter its noon, sunset, sunrise, or the dark. There's a lovely old couple (probably volunteers, unlikely JR staff), guiding tourist on the estimated time arrival of trains, the view, providing some explanation on the station, some guides on how to take pictures. They were extremely friendly, and helpful which mades our days better! There's crowd, since its such a beautiful scenery, so be ready on that. The only downside is the frequency of train was very little, which is understandable since not much commuters uses it.
Ken Kai — Google review
Absolutely beautiful, with the view of vast blue sea, tranquility, clear sky. Apparently this station attracts so many people, photographer, anime lover. A must visit place.
Meigui Hikaru — Google review
The 1 star review is not for the station itself but for the ‘volunteer staff’ at this station. There’s this super racist Japanese old lady volunteering here organizing the order of picture taking actions cuz the station can sometimes get crowded. However she’s super racist and not foreigner friendly like a lot of older generation people in this country. She would smile to Japanese tourists while yell in broken English to foreigner tourists to get out of Japanese people’s picture. When it’s your turn after lining up, if you are a foreigner, she would scream broken English at you again to hurry up saying other people are waiting. Really ruining the vibes here. JR Shikoku should definitely consider firing her and replacing her with a more foreigner friendly staff considering how many foreigner tourists this station attracts.
James Lee — Google review
Its weird I'm reviewing a train station, but it needs to be done, the sunset here was absolutely amazing! I met some japanese people here and we talked alot, I really got to experience something different I wouldn't be able to in Tokyo, I really love that!

Yokomineji Temple is a serene Buddhist temple located amidst the lush forested mountains, which makes it an enchanting stopover along a famous pilgrimage route. The temple, famously called Summit on the Side of the Peak temple, is situated around 2,340 feet above sea level and offers breathtaking views of its stunning surroundings. The temple hosts a flower festival every year owing to its abundance in flowers. However, reaching this exquisite location can be quite challenging for visitors.
Stunning location. Just awesome. And worth every step of the way. Yokomineji is called “Summit on the Side of the Peak” temple and that is no lie. The temple is 2,340 feet above sea level. I loved the experience of climbing this hill and the temple itself is marvellous.
Inbound Kagawa — Google review
Lovely mountain temple. Be aware there is no food of any type up here. There is an enclosed, unheated rest hut with tables for eating or getting out of the weather.
Todd Cohn — Google review
The temple is full of flowers so that a flower festival is held.

(Translated by Google) If you are going by car, you will have to go on a narrow road that is quite steep and somewhat rickety, so if you are concerned about driving, it is best not to do so. It is safe to take the minibus out of consideration for others. When entering the mountain, pay 1,850 yen at a log house-style tollgate and climb another 5 km. When you arrive at the top, there may not be enough parking spaces for those visiting the shrine, but there is plenty of space. After about 15 minutes of walking downhill from the parking lot, you will arrive at a beautiful temple. The precincts are not that large, so there is no problem compared to going there and returning. There is one vending machine, so don't forget to stay hydrated. As a side note, there was a shop in the parking lot for light items. (Translated by Google) This was my third visit to the shrine, and my first attempt at walking up a mountain to visit the shrine. The reason was that I knew that the road I was going by car was narrow, and since the car was large, I thought it would be quite a problem when we had to leave. . . . . After doing some research, I found out that you can climb Yokomineji Temple from a place called Yunami Rest Area. Now, I had been lightly thinking about climbing Yokomineji Temple. It was so exhausting that I kept getting dizzy along the way. However, in terms of time, it took just over an hour to go up and down in just over an hour. On the way, I felt refreshed as I walked along the edge of the stream. One way to get to Yokomineji Temple is to climb the mountain, so why not give it a try? Just a short walk will make you feel like a pilgrim.

(Translated by Google) 2024.02.05 Worship visit temperature 6 degrees cloudy and rainy I avoided it because it was closed for the entire month of February, but I heard at No. 62 Hojuji that Kichijoji No. 63 was familiar to me. When I went to the Kichijoji store, I saw a sign saying ``No snowfall at Yokomineji.'' If you listen to the details, it seems that in case of freezing or snowfall, Yokomineji will contact you. I received approval that it would be fine as long as it was studless, so I decided to head there. After leaving Kichijoji and turning left, turn right at Lawson. Just follow the path. However, it was quite far to the toll booth. It is far from the toll booth to the parking lot. There are several hairpin-like uphills along the way, and the temperature drops to around 3 degrees Celsius. To make matters worse, there was a thick fog with almost no visibility. There are often places without guardrails. 3km from the toll booth? The length is quite long. It was about a 10 minute walk down the stairs from the parking lot. As I continue to walk into the fog, I am tormented by anxiety as to whether I will ever reach it. However, the empty precincts are covered in fog, making it even more mysterious. It was a wonderful time that can only be enjoyed at this time of year. We do not recommend this to anyone who has any concerns about driving.

Futami Seaside Park is a scenic area near Matsuyama city that features a sandy beach, fish and citrus vendors, stepped seating for viewing sunsets, and a wishing stone. It offers an idyllic location to spend a day by the sea or watch the best sunset in the inland Sea of Japan. The park is ideal for couples seeking romance or families looking for fun with children.
Our go to umi beach experience, great for a day trip from Matsuyama. There's a rock island you can swim to, great to learn snorkeling and free diving 6m max depth.

Overall: 5 Location: 5 Foods: 5 Drinks: 5 Atmosphere: 4 Service: 5 Cost Performance: 5 Smoking: yes, not separated Tourist Friendly: it depends Credit Card: yes Comments: I had never tried raw mackerel before but I was really impressed and moved by one provided in this restaurant. Also, seared bonito is just excellent. If you want to try genuine seafood, you must visit here. Your satisfaction is guaranteed. I wish I lived nearby... Only downside is that smoking is permitted and not separated.

Most of the reviews from foreign guests are wrong, except for my review. Orders do take time to reach tables, but when you are a popular restaurant that’s normal. Don’t come here if you do not have knowledge of the local delicious and what they are supposed to taste like. This restaurant is the kind of place you visit when you are an expert on local food culture. I discourage non-locals to visit here without a Japanese person who understands this. Here’s my take.. Jaga Butter slathered in organ sauce called "wata" enjoyed with nihonshu is divine!! We also recommend the horse mackerel sashimi ( saba ) . By far and wide the most widely recognized producers of this fish is Ehime, and this restaurant does it right. The raw oysters are excellent! I also recommend the raw monk fish liver . Another dish is the deep fried burdock root chips! The reason the fish is so good here is because it’s never frozen. This allows the texture to remain firm and crunchy not chewy and gummy like what you get from frozen fish that’s thawed. The quality of the saba here is high and will not disappoint.

I rarely give a bad review, but this would be the one. We ordered both raw and cooked seafood, all of them are tasteless. No joke. Staffs are very unattentive. It’s difficult to catch their attention. Dishes took FOREVER to arrive from the kitchen. I’m surprised the bill was quite costly for the overall experience. I would not recommend this restaurant at all. I wanted to give 1 star, but the beer was smooth and creamy.

Slightly difficult to find but worth the journey! Order the raw oysters, mackerel sashimi and the sea bream chazuke. No English menu or English-speaking staff, but staff will understand what you want from pointing at the Google review images :)
