Made of laminated material to increase strength and make columns and beams. The building of the government office is made into a place of relaxation for the common people by using warm wood. Nowadays, the trees are being reviewed and the number of wooden buildings is gradually increasing. There is no shadow to see trees in ordinary houses. Wood grain pattern on the sheet. (Translated by Google) The town hall of Yusuhara Town is deep in the mountains of Kochi, in the Shikoku Mountains, far from the city where buildings by the contemporary architect Kengo Kuma are gathered. It's truly amazing that a city like this was created by having the same architect participate in the city planning, and I admire their foresight. Even though it is suffering from depopulation, a town has been created that is not lonely and attracts visitors from all over the country. In a sense, this may be a model case for local governments suffering from depopulation. (Translated by Google) It is a place where you can feel the energy of Yusuhara. It has a lively atmosphere that doesn't give off the gloom that is common in regions facing depopulation problems. The modern government building that Kengo Kuma worked on has many young people working there and visitors, so it doesn't feel like it's aging. Yusuhara's compulsory education system is very unique, with a 4:3:2 system for elementary and middle school. Perhaps because of this, there are many people moving here, and under the system to promote migration by renovating vacant houses, it is so popular that most of the more than 40 rental houses have already been occupied. I was able to learn about the history of Yusuhara at the History and Folklore Museum located right in front of the government building, and once I learned about it, I fell in love with this town even more. (Translated by Google) A modern government building designed by Kengo Kuma that uses plenty of Yusuhara cedar. I think it makes sense to spend money here because the concept of the town is to unify the townscape based on Kengo Kuma's architecture. I often see half-finished government buildings, but I think Yusuhara is in good shape. When attracting migrants to hilly and mountainous areas where population decline due to depopulation is accelerating, the government office that serves as the point of contact must make a good impression. When doing so, I think that the government building, which has a strong impression of wood, is modern and does not have an outdated design, making it easy for young people to enter. It also has a good shape that lets in natural light. The response was also very kind. COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN

Mentioned on
Art museum
Museums
Located in a modern building by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the Comico Art Museum showcases the work of Takashi Murakami, one of Japan's most famous contemporary artists. The only way to visit is on a guided tour lasting one hour and starting every 20 minutes. The museum is also home to monochrome photographic seascapes by Sugimoto Hiroshi.
Tucked away from the high street, this hidden gem requires advance reservation in its website. Featuring selected artworks from some of the greatest Japanese contemporary artists (and one of my favourite being Yoshitomo Nara), this art museum showcases an impressive architectural design by Kengo Kuma. Together with the museum’s traffic control policy (hence the advanced booking), I could truly enjoy my time in the art museum! Truly one of the best art appreciation experiences!

Absolutely loved visiting this art museum, but found ¥1,200 a bit pricey. Reminded me a lot of the museums in Naoshima. The staff gave us a booklet to read which was very interesting, as their audio guides are only in Japanese. The more information you get, the more you can appreciate it. Definitely a highlight for me in Yufuin town.

Great museum in Yufuin. the museum was designed by Kengo Kuma. The building looks modern although materials are traditionally known as yakisugi. Especially, I love the outside corridor as I could enjoy a variety of plants changing from season to season while I walked across the corridor. Two main space in the museum was very simple. There were a few exhibits. This simple space reminds me of Wabi-sabi. The staff explained the detail of the exhibits, so I could understand deeply. You needed to make a reservation in advance. The one thing that was not happy about no time to stroll the yard. All in all, I highly recommend. (I visited there in December)

Yusuhara Community Library

We saw an NHK documentary when we were planning our first trip to Shikoku, from Australia. We decided that the Yusuhara Community Library was a place we must see. The Library and the whole town/village of Yusuhara is so impressive. It was delightful to spend most of the day in Yusuhara, seeing how the local people use the Library as a true communal space. It’s location between an aged care facility and a Primary School is wise. We congratulate the township of Yusuhara for all of the decision-making that went into making your beautiful library a reality. Two Japanophiles from Australia are so glad we came to see this warm and inviting building.

We passed by this place during our golden week road trip completely by chance. While driving in the valleys between the shikoku mountains, we found ourselves in a place resembling a town of sorts and was enthralled by the architecture of this place. I needed a break from driving and it looked like a wonderful place so we decided to stop. It was such a beautifully designed building, in the middle of nowhere. From the outside, inside, in between the shelves of books, everything was designed so beautifully and there was so much art in the place. There was a piano open to the public, and a rock climbing station for kids. A really dope place I wouldn't mind spending an afternoon at. A truly pleasant surprised finding this place.
