Mount Ishizuchi

Nature & Parks
Mountains
Mount Ishizuchi is a rocky mountain peak that can be reached by climbing stairs and rope chains. It boasts a shrine at the top and offers expansive views of the surrounding area, particularly in the fall. While the climb can be dangerous at times due to chained sections, alternative routes are available for those who are not physically prepared. However, it may take some time to reach the actual peak when it's crowded as they enforce safety limits on visitors. Bringing a bag for any trash is recommended.
Great place to visit, moderate hiking difficulty, you can skip climbing parts.

Got to see plenty of shades of Ishizuchi-san in one day. Me and my friends went there in the 1st week of November expecting to see the red autumn leaves, but unfortunately we were about a week late. The mountain top was green (and brown). That was a small let down, however, the scenery was nonetheless breathtaking. I come from Nepal, the country of mountains, and was still amazed by the views. Our journey started from Saijo-shi station at around 7am. We took the Ishizuchi bus and reached the bus stop near Ishizuchi cable car in about 40 minutes. We got to see a cool dam and reservoir on the way. There was a long line at the ticket counter of the cable car. The cable car ride was so fun. The cool air was so refreshing. The ride was short (or so it felt). From the cable car station we started our hiking journey of about 2 hrs or so to reach the Ishizuchi shrine. I was amazed to see the number of people scaling the mountain. There were people of all ages. They had come from all different places in Shikoku. Had a great time interacting with them. I wish to see the mountain in its full glory and will definitely visit again next October.

That was my first time hiking a mountain and it will always have a place in my heart. I felt difficult to climb the mountain but then the best view at the end make me want to do it again. Thank you for the experience. I will never forget the place ✨🥰

Great place for hiking and climbing. There are three sets of chains. Not recommended unless you are fit and not afraid of heights!

Loved this hike. I went at the end of October and the autumn colors were spectacular! Locals did say that the middle of October is the peak season for the autumn leaves but was still stunning when I climbed. Temperatures are quite different from the coast so go prepared for some cold weather.

Embarking on a thrilling journey up Mount Ishizuchi in the vivid hues of autumn was a decision I'll forever cherish. In the midst of late 2020, as the grip of the pandemic loosened, I, along with my friends, seized the opportunity to explore this magnificent peak. Having lived in Matsuyama for my studies, I couldn't resist the allure of Ishizuchi's vibrant beauty during the holidays. Though I admit to a touch of fear that prevented me from trying the rope chains, the experience was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The landscape, adorned in myriad autumnal shades, painted a picture-perfect backdrop against the clear sky. And here I memorized through my eyes and lenses.
Alifia Widya — Google review
Great day hike that took us about just under 6hrs return (incl lunch) from the ropeway. The weather was very windy at the top and at times slippery. The chains were fun so if you want an extra challenge you can climb via the chains instead! It was very cloudy at the top so we didn’t climb to the ridge peak. We then finished the hike with a soak in the onsen that’s at the bottom of the mountain.
valerie x — Google review
This hike is beautiful, especially so in fall, if not a little dangerous at times. Make sure you are physically prepared if you want to climb the chained sections, otherwise take the alternative routes. Unfortunately it can take a long time to get to the actual peak of the mountain when its very busy, as they limit the number of people out there for safety. Also make sure to bring a bag for any trash you might have. Still, the stunning scenery and views make it totally worth it!

This mountain will always have a place in my traveler's heart with my recollection of summer 2023. Traversing its difficult path that gradually ascends, especially after reaching the steel/metal staircases, is both a frustration to my feet, but a delight to my eyes. The summit is just the start of the adventure with its extra knife-edge ridge challenge. Worth-experiencing 💙
Ryan Glenn Conda — Google review
A fairly strenuous hike with sections of sheer rock faces climbed with the aid of large chains (can be bypassed via stairs) and a final short, exposed ridge scramble to the true summit, should you choose to climb it. One of Japan’s seven most sacred mountains. The final summit peak (Tengu-dake) is impressive when viewed from the summit shrine. See photo of English tourist brochure for more details. In early September, I was able to do it in 6 hours round trip from the upper ropeway station with a couple of short breaks, since the route wasn’t busy. In the summer season the route can get crowded with traffic jams on the chains; a potentially dangerous situation. During the climbing season, huts provide the basic necessities. Carry water or be prepared to purchase drinks at the huts. For those with a bottle, water can be purchased in bulk for 200/l at the summit hut in season.
Darren DeRidder — Google review
Mt. Ishizuchi is the highest mountain in Western Japan (Kansai, Chugoku, Kyushu and Shikoku) at 1982m above sea level. The ropeway staff said police had warned first-timers in the area not to start climbing from the base, but I think it would've been okay to follow the ropeway line as a guide. So we took the ropeway up, and then from there it's about a 1.5~2 hour hike up to the top. There are several peaks, a few which are the same height. Note that there is only one way up, but if you don't want to walk round and round the trail going up, there are sections where you can climb up chains. Overall, I think the chains save you a bit of time, but it was busy on the day I went, and many climbers meant the chains had a lot of traffic congestion. There's a shrine at the top, and many people come to pay their respects. There's also a souvenir shop and a small food joint. Alternatively, there's an instant cup noodle vending machine there too. It wasn't as difficult as most locals make it out to be. And the views were definitely worth the hike!

Yokomineji Temple is a serene Buddhist temple located amidst the lush forested mountains, which makes it an enchanting stopover along a famous pilgrimage route. The temple, famously called Summit on the Side of the Peak temple, is situated around 2,340 feet above sea level and offers breathtaking views of its stunning surroundings. The temple hosts a flower festival every year owing to its abundance in flowers. However, reaching this exquisite location can be quite challenging for visitors.
Stunning location. Just awesome. And worth every step of the way. Yokomineji is called “Summit on the Side of the Peak” temple and that is no lie. The temple is 2,340 feet above sea level. I loved the experience of climbing this hill and the temple itself is marvellous.

When you arrive at the top, there may not be enough parking spaces for those visiting the shrine, but there is plenty of space. After about 15 minutes of walking downhill from the parking lot, you will arrive at a beautiful temple. The precincts are not that large, so there is no problem compared to going there and returning. After doing some research, I found out that you can climb Yokomineji Temple from a place called Yunami Rest Area. Now, I had been lightly thinking about climbing Yokomineji Temple. (Translated by Google) 2024.4.27 Worship After visiting Ishizuchi Shrine, there was another shrine nearby that I was interested in, so I decided to visit it. There was a place in front of me that I thought was a parking lot, but as I walked past the company name sign, there was a place that was clearly visible as a parking lot, so I parked there. As you head towards the shrine from the parking lot, you will immediately see a large sacred camphor tree. If you turn to your right, you will see a shrine gate, but beyond the gate, there is something that tells you that it is a sacred place. As you pass through the shrine gate, the Shinmei-zukuri main shrine will spread out in front of you. There is nothing behind the main shrine, and the sky is clear, which makes it very majestic. My wife tried to take a picture of it, but decided against it, saying that the majesty of the place could not be conveyed in a photograph. Use the corridor on the left to go to the shrine and worship. The two deities enshrined here are Amaterasu Omikami and Takekuni Koriwake no Mikoto. It seems that the two pillars are collectively called ``Isonokami.'' For some reason, next to the shrine, there is a golden princess called Konohanasakuyahime no Mikoto. Sorry for the reason. I don't understand because I don't study enough. You can receive a handwritten stamp at the shrine office on the right side of the shrine gate. It was a very nice letter, and as usual, we took a commemorative photo and finished the visit. At least among the shrines I've seen so far in Niihama and Saijo, it can be said to be by far the most wonderful shrine in terms of size and majesty of the building. The path from the Sanmon gate to the shrine is paved with white sand, and I thought it would be awkward to walk on it, but to my surprise, there is a dedicated approach path to the left. This approach passes in front of the worship hall and wraps around the worship hall and main shrine in the form of a stone pavement. This is the first time I've seen a shrine of this style. It seems that Danjiri festival floats from all over the city gather during the Saijo Festival. But it's exactly the right place. Wow, there was a sense of silence in the air, which made me feel very mysterious.

The treasure hall is closed due to corona, but you can get a goshuin. The sign of the imperial car was impressive. You have to go a little further towards the mountain side than National Route 11. It may be a little difficult to understand for first-time users. The shrine grounds are right from the parking lot, so it's easy to visit. The main shrine is a magnificent building with a profound atmosphere. I walked around it and it felt very dignified. The goshuin stamp was 300 yen. After visiting the main shrine, there are shrines surrounding it, so you can walk around. It is a beautiful place to see plum blossoms and cherry blossoms in the spring, and autumn leaves in the fall. The sacred tree has a large presence. Is it an imitation of something else? It's an interesting sign. Did the chicken bother you by making a war cry? (Translated by Google) Visited in September 2019. A quaint shrine. The shrine building is in the Shinmei style, and the chiki and bonito trees are magnificent and beautiful. Personally, I like Shinmei-zukuri shrine buildings, so when I see them, I can feel their solidity and think, ``That's nice.'' The stone in front of the shrine gate with the name of the shrine engraved on it, perhaps a company name sign, gives a nice atmosphere and gives you a sense of the times. It is said that in the past it was Shikinaisha and also the former Kokuheichusha. There are only two former government shrines in Ehime Prefecture, Oyamazumi Shrine and this Isano Shrine. It's a great thing. This is probably why members of the imperial family also visit the shrine. Even so, since it was founded during the reign of Emperor Seimu, it is about 100 years old according to the Western calendar, making it extremely old. There are some shrines that are old enough to be good, but this one is quaint and has a nice atmosphere. The people at the shrine office were very nice, and I was given a stamp. Thank you for visiting us.
