Saitobaru Burial Mounds

Hiking area
Saitobaru Burial Mounds, a prehistoric site with ancient tombs surrounded by vast fields of blooming flowers, is an ideal spot for enjoying the annual fire festival and cherry blossom viewing. The area offers great food stands and ample space to relax on a tarp without overcrowding. This natural wonderland is rich in biodiversity and provides excellent opportunities for leisurely walks and relaxation.

(Translated by Google) The Saitobaru Tumulus Group is one of the largest kofun groups in Japan, with over 300 tumuli. The tumulus was formed on the plateau of Saitobaru and spreads over a vast area. It is said that it was built from the beginning of the 4th century to the 7th century, indicating that there was an influential person who ruled this place from the beginning of the Kofun period to the end. Miyazaki Prefecture is one of the places considered to be the origin of Japan in ancient mythology, and this place also seems to have a deep connection with ancient history, but where is the connection between mythology and history? What is your relationship with the central Yamato government? I have endless questions like this. The burial mounds are now maintained as a park, and at this time of year, the cosmos in full bloom provide a beautiful view. There is also a vast parking lot, a rest house with a souvenir shop, and an event plaza, giving the park a particularly touristy feel, especially on the south side. Although it is a park that you can enjoy, it is true that it feels a little strange as a place where you can feel the romance of ancient times. When you go to the north side of the park, near the third kofun group near the museum, there are fewer people, and you can feel the atmosphere of ruins with kofun scattered over a large area.

We visited here at the end of February 2024. Unfortunately, we gave up to walk around the outside becauseofthebad weather. However, the musium was a perfect replacement for us. The inside was kept clean and tidy, and the staff were kind and friendly. It wasn't a big museum, but so much info was displayed and easy to understand. We coubelieve that it was a free entrance. There was a cafe upstairs and the handmade cheese cake was so tasty. The parking was at the bottom and needed to walk up the stairs, and we needed to be careful as it would be slippery on the rainy day. There was extra parking just beside the building but only for special needs, maternity, and elderly people.

I would like to see an exhibition specializing in the Saitobaru Burial Mounds during the Kofun period, as well as valuable excavated items. From the Paleolithic period to the Nara period, the exhibition is too half-finished for the cost. The exhibition hall had detailed explanations and video screenings, so I was able to spend some time at a leisurely pace. Although it was raining, the view of the ancient tombs from the third floor was also nice. Flash photography is not allowed inside the museum, but it was nice to be able to take photos. (Translated by Google) A museum located on the north side of the Saitobaru Tumulus Group. Admission is free. The exhibition method here is quite unique. There are not many textbook-like explanations, such as simply arranging the excavated items or explaining step-by-step the distribution of kofun and their changes over time. Instead, what kind of life did the ancient people live? What does the beginning of rice cultivation mean? There are many panels that raise issues such as, and related exhibits are lined up around them. Also, perhaps with the aim of letting you experience the feeling of researching ancient history yourself, there is an area like an ancient history laboratory where you can study various things while looking at reference books. The storage room for excavated items can also be seen through the glass. There doesn't seem to be a set viewing course inside the museum, so visitors can wander through the various exhibits and think about the people of ancient times. Although it is a very interesting exhibition method, it also raises questions such as ``What kind of people were the ones who created the Saitobaru Tumulus Group?'' ``What was the relationship between these people and the Yamato government, and what was their influence on ancient history after that?'' Even if you visit the museum, you may not get answers right away, so it can be a little frustrating. However, it is still worth mentioning that so much of the exhibit can be seen for free. It's difficult to understand everything in one visit, so I'd like to come again if I have the chance.

Normally you can cross the dam, but it seems like you can't cross it here! ️ Or rather, it's owned by a private company, so I can't complain (lol) However, due to the large amount of power generated, there is a 220kv transmission line downstream!

It is said to be the most beautiful arch dam in Japan because of its huge size, and it is quite a sight to see, but it is a shame that there is no place to see it beautifully. There is an observation deck nearby where you can take a restroom break. As you reach the upper reaches of the river, the color of the water gradually changes to green, giving it a mysterious color. A big dam is being built. Humans are truly amazing. I'm not particularly a fan of dams, but I'm in awe of the idea of making something unique. Looking at the memorial tower, etc., one can imagine that the process was not straightforward. Reaffirm not only the scenery but also the wonderfulness of the people. It is located on the way to Nishimera Village. I can't help but watch it. There are restrooms, so you can use them even if no one is there. If you take a photo and go to Konohanakan, you will receive a dam card! (Translated by Google) A beautiful and noble arch dam. It looks flimsy, but the arch style gives it a sexy feel that other dams don't have. Hitotsuse Dam is the largest hydroelectric dam in Kyushu and the 10th largest in Japan. I think dam enthusiasts in Kyushu should make this their home dam(?). The power generation capacity of Hitotsuse Dam is 180,000 kilowatts. The name of the dam lake is Lake Mera. By the way, the artificial lake smaller than Lake Mera, located about 7km to the northeast, is the upper lake of the Komaru side pumped storage power plant, which generates 1.2 million kilowatts of electricity. Well, there's a difference between a power plant that dams up a natural flow and a pumped-up dam lake built for the purpose of generating electricity. We have created a 360 degree aerial photo (street view) from the front of the dam, which normal people can never see. Check it out if you're interested.

I ran like hell and finally got there! It was a really beautiful dam that I wanted to look at all the time. Yamaguchi Prefecture also has an extremely thin arch dam in an amazing location. Like Hitotsuse Dam, it is owned by an electric power company, and entry to the top is prohibited, but amazing dams are built in amazing places! But it's well worth a visit!
