Nature & Parks
Shosenkyo Gorge, located in Yamanashi, Japan, is a must-visit destination in autumn. This 1,250-square-kilometer area is part of the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park and offers stunning valleys, forested mountains, and charming rural towns. The gorge is famous for its breathtaking autumn foliage that explodes in vibrant shades of yellow, brown, orange, and red from early to mid-November.
Shōsenkyō Gorge as a whole is a beautiful and serene destination, easily accessed from Kofu. We arrived at Shōsenkyō Taki Ue on the local bus (IC card accepted) and commenced our adventure, starting with the ropeway, having lunch at a local soba shop and descending on foot through the gorge itself to the Greenline Shōsenkyō bus stop. The gorge hosts amazing scenery including Senga (Sengataki) Falls and a rushing river which runs parallel to the stone walkway. There is no entry fee required here, simply follow the path until you wish to exit. The route we took is fairly easy, and being downhill would be suitable for younger children.

Very beautiful nature area with Mountain views, a waterfall, and a river full of rocks. It’s also spotted with the occasional shrine/ temple and lots of little shops to eat. Easily one of the best places to visit in Yamanashi

Came for photos in early Nov. There's enough red and yellow foliage for good pictures but it's probably more colorful in mid November I'd think. There are several hiking options depending on how much time you have. We went with the faster route and also took the cable car to the summit. It was a pretty easy walk with lots of opportunities for photos. Hiking shoes are not necessary (maybe in the winter though). There are also several food shops, souvenir shops and vending machines along the way, so you don't need to take a bunch of food and drink with you if you don't want to. For our group of 4, it was roughly the same price taking the bus vs taxi. The taxi is slightly less rough than the bus if someone is prone to car sickness.
Mewslie — Google review
Really nice hiking area with multiple lots of free parking. All of the main paths are paved so it is more like a walk rather than a hike. Their are also vending machines, restrooms and food stalls along the path. Best to arrive in the morning to beat most of the crowds. Also, there is a lot of construction on the way up and down the mountain, just be prepared.
Kristin P — Google review
Relatively unpopular nature sightseeing area. Really recommended for peak autumn season.
Kirana N — Google review
I went on a rainy day in mid November, which is the perfect time to go because the autumn maple leaves look amazing! The hike could have been marked better with more English assistance, but otherwise it was pretty easy. The green line bus is reasonably priced, but comes about once an hour, so be careful about your return. I would highly recommend this hike!
Stuart Auld — Google review
Shosenkyo is a nice place for hiking because its mountain view is awesome. I recommend people who are planning to go to Kofu area to go Shosenkyo. For people who are planning to go, I recommended them to check which bus lines are available because some bus lines are closed during the winter time.
Kelvin Wong — Google review
Shosenkyo Gorge, best place to see foliage on November. Not far from Tokyo, only 2.5 hours by Highway Bus.

Takeda Shrine is a Shinto shrine that boasts of a remarkable display of Takeda weapons and fall foliage. This historical attraction is surrounded by moats and features an array of Shingen theme charms, katana swords, kabutos helmets, scrolls, and banners used in battle. Visitors are treated to the beauty of the lush surroundings any time of day while enjoying the traditional hostels or watching a Noh stage performance.
I recently visited Takeda Shrine, and it exceeded all my expectations! If you're a Japan history buff like me, this place is a must-visit. Nestled in a serene setting, Takeda Shrine offers a fascinating journey into the rich history of the Takeda clan, particularly during the reign of Takeda Shingen. The highlight for history enthusiasts is undoubtedly the museum dedicated to the Takeda clan. It provides an in-depth look into the life and times of Takeda Shingen, showcasing artifacts, relics, and informative displays that transport you back to that era. The attention to detail is commendable, making it a truly immersive experience. The serene surroundings also make it a peaceful escape for families looking to enjoy some quality time together.

During my early college years, I had to do a report on Takeda Shingen. Years later on this day, I had the honor of visiting a shrine dedicated to him. The shrine has an array of Shingen theme charms and you can even purchase a small scale size of his banner. Unfortunately the Shingen museum was closed due some renovations, but artifacts site was open and there were plenty of historic displays including katanas, kabutos, scrolls, and banner used in battle.

Nice shrine that’s rich in history, easy to access, and has a really great museum with lots of armor and weapons on display. A must see in Kofu
Jacob Newcomb — Google review
Must visit here if you come to kofu. A city full of takeda seal (The red diagonal diamond). From the station you need to either walk 2.1km up a slop or take a bus @190yen per person just outside the station. Not to worry the bus can exchange big note to small change. When enter the bus (every half hour) take the ticket from the back gate. Before reaching the shine press the bell. The bus driver will stop and see you pay the bus fee . Very convenient.

The whole area is full of historical spots to see, and this one is a rich and well-maintained jewel. Any time of the day, it’s beautiful and lush to see. There is a noh stage in addition to the usual hostels. If you’re into samurai, it’s a must-visit.

Buddhist temple

Kai Zenkoji is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Kofu with a grand entrance gate, vast hall and a legendary key believed to grant salvation. The grounds are not extensive, but the main hall is impressive and has an attractive weathered appearance. There is also a 'hell' in the pitch-black basement that visitors can go through to feel for a lock which adds to the experience.
A historic temple very worthwhile stopping by if you're in Kofu. The grounds are not huge, but the main hall is impressive and attractively weathered. There's a 'hell' you can go through feeling for a lock in the pitch black basement -- more fun than it sounds! Also take time to go off to the right of the main hall and there is a collection of interesting statues of Buddhist deities particular to the Yamanashi area.

Maizurujo Park is a serene and spacious park located within an easy walking distance from Kofu Station. It boasts the ruins of a castle dating back to 1583, as well as stunning views of Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms during springtime. The park is open 24 hours, but some parts such as the museum and upper floor of one of the gates may be closed off at certain times.
Such a good place for walking, serenity seeking and relaxing! It’s also a good place to know some history about Kofu. It has a great view and just a few minutes walk from Kofu station.

Beautifully kept parks and gardens around the old castle ramparts. Great views of the city.
Sean Sinclair — Google review
An easy walk from Kofu Station. The park is open 24 hours, however the it is only the museum and the upper floor of one of the gates which are closed off when the park is 'closed' so feel to go by anytime, day or night. The park is big; depending on your pace expect to take from 30 minutes to an hour to see it all. Be careful if you have bad knees; there are a lot of steep stairs. The top of the watchtower affords a view of Mt. Fuji when the weather is clear. Tips for photographers - there are good shots in the morning of the crane statue at the main entrance. From the watchtower, looking at the Shaonto Tower, the sun rises behind you and sets behind the tower. Plan your shots :-)

Visitors can explore exhibitions on astronomy and technology.
(Translated by Google) Even if the upper parking lot is full, a shuttle bus will take you from the lower parking lot. Although it was small, the exhibits were well thought out and fun, and all the children, ranging from elementary school to high school, had fun without getting bored. We stayed for about 3 hours, walking around slowly, trying out two crafts, and having some snacks. It might be a good idea to take a quick spin and enjoy the planetarium. (Translated by Google) I used it for the first time. Admission fee is 520 yen for adults and 220 yen for children. There was also a planetarium. Sorry, I don't remember the price as I didn't use it. There are many things like experimental equipment and hands-on experiences that involve using your body. You can re-enter the museum, so on hot days you can come and go outside while taking a break. There is also a children's country on the premises, and there is a park with no parking or admission fees. In the back of the park, I enjoyed riding an unusual bicycle for a long time. The park also has an area for small children, so you don't have to worry. There was also a trampoline available for 10 minutes. It's a large white thing that you often see. For food, there is a reasonably priced restaurant in the science museum. There aren't that many seats, so either choose a different time or bring your own. There seems to be a rest room in the administration building, so you might be able to use that. I think the restrooms are clean because the play area has been rebuilt and looks new.

Kosaku is a popular restaurant in Yamanashi Prefecture, known for serving Houtou, a local specialty. The dish consists of flour noodles and an assortment of vegetables in a savory miso soup. The restaurant offers variations of Houtou, with options to customize the ingredients. In addition to Houtou, they also serve other dishes and drinks. Visitors are encouraged to remove their shoes upon entering and can expect a cozy dining experience.
We ate houtou and horse organ stew with Japanese sake. Since I have cycled for 120km on the day, the food was incredibly delicious and felt every essence of every ingredients was just immediately absorbed into my body. The best food for this year definitely. Though branch shop of this restaurant on the south side was busy at the time we stepped in, the north side wasn’t full of people and we could smoothly get our food.

Our taxi driver recommended this place on our way back from the gorge. Leave shoes at the door and someone will show you to your seat. They serve dishes other than houtou but it would be a waste to come all the way out here and not try it! I got a pumpkin houtou and a drink. The bowl looks kind of small but it's super filling. There's a good amount of other veges as well. Someone else at the table ordered a custom houtou which they were happy to do. Not sure if there was an English menu though but you can always point at the picture.

The food tasted great! I loved that everything was natural and organic as well. Loved this experience! Great service and atmosphere!

The squid croquette is nice but everything else is so-so. You just don't really get your money's worth. There are better restaurants in the area.

This place is wonderful. My friend celebrated a birthday, and they brought him a beautiful looking dessert. The food is delicious!

Food seems to be high quality. There are lots of vegetarian and organic foods on the menu. It can get busy and it's small, so take that into consideration when going.

Totally awesome! I just loved the food. It isn't cheap, but it is a very reasonable price for the great ambient and food.

Sushi restaurant
Celebrated my wife's birthday with a lunch at Wakazushi. The clean storefront and vibrant fresh flowers made a great first impression. We were guided to the counter as we were a party of two, where we enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and watched the skilled chefs at work. The seafood bowl we ordered was surprisingly generous in portion and high in quality. The menu offered an interesting selection, making it a delightful dining experience overall!
Best sushi experience I had in Yamanashi. Do book in advance as it can be crowded or full house during the weekends

visit : lunch this is one of the worst sushi lunch experiences i've had in a long time. the sushi was rather tasteless - you can enjoy a far fresher tasting selection for almost half the price in central tokyo ( try sushiya in b1f kitte building otemachi as a direct example ) apart from that the fish perhaps isn't the best cuts or freshest ...... i particularly disliked where the staff added extra wasabi to the uni the lunch set we had was served with a mediocre salad, some udon with a very weak sauce and a soup that was more like a finger wash as it was so weak tasting this is the second visit for lunch. The first visit was merely "okay" but the visit for lunch, 13th May, wasn't good especially vs expectation / quality and price restaurant decoration is best described as 'well worn' i have noted this restaurant is 'recommended' in the area as a good dining option. i definitely wouldn't recommend it and would say if this is a recommended restaurant ' then other offerings in the area must be pretty bad 2 set lunch and beer was ¥4,400 around - which for the quality and setting really is not good price or experience

Terrible quality. Instead of a nice marbled piece of salmon like they show on the menu, I got a small dry and chewy piece. 825 Yen for that? The chef knew exactly what he was doing.

(Translated by Google) Went for lunch for my wife's birthday! The storefront is clean and the fresh flowers are lively, giving a good impression. I went with two people, so I was guided to the counter. The friendly atmosphere of the craftsmen in front of the chef. I got a very good impression of the human relations at work and the attitude towards work 😊 I ordered a seafood bowl and was surprised at the volume! ️ The material is big, and the response is enough 🤤 I was happy that they also included seasonal items ☺️ The soup was taken from the ala. There was a sense of transparency, the soup stock came out well, and it was refreshing and delicious. (Personally, it was a little salty, I guess) We also had the summer specialty, “Boiled conger eel”. Finely cut bones are applied, and the kitchen knife is excellent. The bones were cut so that the texture of the small bones unique to conger eel could hardly be felt. Kishu plum is also used for the plum meat, and it looks like it has no synthetic coloring, and the plum meat retains the original taste and aroma of the plum. It was delicious. I want cold sake 🤭 Natural shaved ice for dessert🍧 I got it with a limited blackberry sauce 🤭 Both the sauce and condensed milk have been added to the mix, which is also delicious 🥰 I should have been full, but I ate it all 😋 The natural ice is shaved so thinly that it melts away when you put it in your mouth😋 It was a delicious shaved ice that you can feel a lot of ingenuity ☺️ (Original)

(Translated by Google) March 2024 The store is beautiful and feels clean. The taste and customer service were good. The sushi toppings are thick and voluminous. The presentation has a good taste and looks great. Personally, I prefer it with a little more vinegar and each grain of rice separated (maybe a little sticky). The extra ¥150 soup was not good enough. (fewer ingredients) Overall, I was very satisfied with this store and would like to visit it again. There are a lot of seats inside the store and the turnover rate is good, so it doesn't seem like it will take a long time to get in. You will be notified by SMS when it is your turn, so you don't have to worry about waiting outside the store. There are a lot of seats, so it can be a bit noisy. If you like eating in a quiet restaurant, it is best to avoid this restaurant. During lunch hours, the menu is reasonably priced and offers relatively large portions. The sushi ingredients are large and you can be satisfied at this price. (Translated by Google) The food is fresh, the ingredients are good, and it's very delicious. As mentioned in other reviews, the customer service is not good, probably because they are part-time employees. I called out to him several times, but he didn't respond (there's no way he couldn't hear me). In the end, he didn't react and I wondered what he was standing for.

(Translated by Google) Order Wakataru Gozen at lunchtime The atmosphere inside the restaurant is nice, and the ingredients are meaty and delicious! I went late on a weekday, so there was no wait time. There are many counter and table seats, and there seems to be a second floor as well. It seems to be a popular restaurant among people from within the prefecture as there is plenty of parking. It has long business hours and accepts various cashless payments. I was able to eat delicious sushi at a very reasonable price for a prefecture without a sea!
