Geibikei is a popular tourist destination where visitors can embark on traditional all-season boat rides that showcase spectacular river-gorge scenery. During the winter and amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, boats are covered to keep snow out and heated tables with blankets are available for guests to use during their 45-minute tour. Visitors also have the option of purchasing duck food to feed the ducks swimming alongside them as they journey through the river.
During winter and covid they cover the boats to keep the snow out. There are heated tables and blankets for you to use while on the tour, you can also buy duck food to feed the menu ducks 🦆 you will encounter on the river. Overall a really fun and unique 45 minute experience. Not easy to get to with train and bus, but not impossible.

This boat ride has been on my bucket list for years! We got there first thing in the morning to catch the first boat, and there were only three other people on our boat! Also, we were allowed to bring our two dogs! The gorge is beautiful, and it was great to get out in nature. After riding for a bit, we got out and walked around at the opposite end. On the way back, our tour guide sang, which was great. The acoustics of the gorge really made this a memorable experience. Please make sure to visit if you can. Exploring off the beaten path is a great way to explore japan.

A historical and remarkable of an evocative scene created from jaw-dropping rocks during a boat cruise. Enjoying the quiet , natural environment along with the boat man singing traditional song, " Song of Geibi" The scenery of the nature view will change accordance to with the seasons. It is a place worth to visit.

A nice ride through the river in a boat. Its magical if it snows. The boatsmen kepp you entertained throughout the journey. There's duck food to feed the ducks swimming alongside. The boat stops at a point in half n hour and you can roam about for a while before the ride back.
Sutirtha Das — Google review
Gorgeous scenery and a lovely, relaxing boat ride down this impressive bit of natural beauty. It was easy enough to get to (a train and then a bus run from Morioka) and the boats run hourly until 3pm in the winter. Definitely worth a visit!
Gareth Morris — Google review
Gorgeous to visit in all seasons. The boat keepers and punters are talkative and friendly, and they even sing for you! There is a shrine at the end of the gorge and a hole through which you can throw stones into. The stones each represent a wish or desire (love, wealth etc) and getting them into the home will supposedly grant your wish. Make sure you bring water with you if you’re going in summer like I did. There are also toilets at the end of the gorge.
Lorne Inglis — Google review
No prior reservation required, nature at it’s best. Buy 50円 fish food and pass the time, since the boat ride will last for more than an hour, you should be ready. The person who navigate the boat will sing a song which was so beautiful,

Beautiful scenery and several spots to enjoy. Apparently, there are different views to enjoy for all four seasons. Very unique and enjoyable experience.

The rock cliff is grand and majestic. Its rugged and imposing facade commands attention. The water there is very clear, so you can ride small boat to get a clear view of the fish in the water, At the same time, there are many cute ducks accompanying you wownq the side. By the way, the boatmen sings beautifully.😍

¥1800 ticket per person, the whole trip takes 90mins. The boat man was so nice and even serenaded us 🎤 🎶 A must-try in this area. I can only imagine how much more beautiful it’ll be in Autumn! 🍁

visited geibekie gorge 猊鼻溪on 1.11.2023. we just caught the 11am boat ride ¥1800 1.5hrs but actually there were like a dozen returning boats when our boatman punt out nice gorge beautiful on its own even without peak autumn colours no no great rush you buy ¥50 feed & the ducks will follow you the whole journey (kind of😂) takes 30mins to reach the other side where you have 20mins to snap photos, feed big fat carps, find the lion’s nose rock 猊鼻… 猊is the 狻猊 like mystical lion in 龙生九子, the 5th son of dragon’s 9 sons. the boatman will sing their not Japanese old songs..some younger ones karaoke songs and some passengers audition for boatman vacancy 😎 I think very nice relaxing 1.5hrs well spent 😎

New experience, going on boat, and guide was very kind explaining everything. Food lovers can opt for lunch and enjoy while riding the boat.

Visited on 11th November (Sat), peak autumn was over but still a very wonderful sight and experience. Best to go as early as possible to avoid the crowd, there were a lot of people already for the 11am slot. Recommend buying KKDay tickets as it’s slightly cheaper, only need to scan one QR code to collect tickets for your group and it’s faster.

From my travel diary "we broke that with a journey from Nikko to a place called Geibi-Kei. It is about 45 minutes by train from Ichinoseki and when we got there it was snowing lightly. It has only one attraction namely a small river that passes through sheer cliffs about 100m high. We caught a flat bottom boat and for an hour we went up the river. Surrounded by cliffs and really heavy snow falls. Some ducks and birds and lots of winds high up in the trees. Just breathtaking and beautiful. And the bus trip back from there was just great as the snow is falling and you have almost a white-out because everything is white"
Ross Daniels — Google review
Very nice and relaxing experience! You are transported with a group of fellow visitors by the boat operators in a traditional boat steered using a long wooden branch. During the trip, the operator will tell you about the Gorge, and serenade you with a hauntingly beautiful Japanese song in the end. You will get more out of the trip if you understand Japanese, but regardless, I would recommend this trip!
Ted Wres — Google review
Super friendly boat host operator. We were the last to on board because traveling with a pre-school child and walking from the train station. Amazing nature and river tour! The boater actually built these boats by themselves. And they're great singers too! There's a little fortune game to play at the end of the boat ride. It's worthy to come visit across all seasons. You may reserve your ticket online to enjoy discounts too. Be mindful of the the weather for canceled tours.

Genbikei Gorge is a picturesque location that features a steep, tree-lined ravine with stretches of white-water along the Iwai River. It can be observed from cliff-top paths and is especially beautiful during the autumn season when colors change. The area includes three bridges along its official route, which takes at least 40 minutes to cover if visitors want to see all three. Be careful while scaling rocks for better views as it can get quite slippery in some parts.
It's a beautiful place to just sit and relax. We tried to do the food that goes across the gorge but they were not running at 2 in the afternoon.

2023.秋 (Translated by Google) I was looking for flying dumplings. You can order and eat dango at the Azumaya. Tea is included for 500 yen. When you put money in the basket and hit the wooden board with a mallet, the basket will be pulled back and the dango will be placed inside. Are you looking at this situation...? It came with tea for the number of people. Even when shaken, it does not overflow. (The dumplings were also delicious) There is a dango shop with a parking lot on the opposite side, but I still want to eat there. Of course, the valley was also beautiful. There is a fee for parking in this valley, but if you purchase a souvenir from the souvenir shop next to it, it is free. 2023.Autumn

Not to be confused with Geibikei gorge, Genbikei is pretty underwhelming. The view and walking trails would be much improved in the summer, but I came during winter and all the trees were dormant, the trails closed. Not worth the 1100 yen it takes to bus here . If you do find your way here anyways, cross the suspension bridge, which is neat.

Awesome place for nature lovers. There is a walking path along with the river. It is so refreshing and satisfying. The best season is autumn foliage which is towards the end of October. Do not park here. It is 700 yen and I don’t think they deserve it. There is glass park. Take some time to visit here. Awesome art work.
Ceco23 — Google review
Beautiful scenery and very close to Ichinoseki! The parking lot by the Rest House is free as long as you spend at least 700 yen inside, which feels absolutely worth supporting anyway - the snacks are delicious and the souvenirs are gorgeous, locally made - we bought a wind chime made of Iwate iron for around 2000 yen. The cherry blossoms were just starting to open, and the glass village across the bridge is worth seeing.

(Translated by Google) There was a deep ravine right next to the residential area, which felt very strange and interesting. It's a discovery because it's a view like no other. There was a line of people waiting for the dumplings hanging from a rope from the opposite bank. Regardless of the taste, this is a winning idea. The only parking available is a nearby paid private parking lot, which is a shame.

There weren't many tourists yet, so I was able to take a leisurely look around. I left my car at the roadside station and walked for about 7 minutes. If you are shopping at a souvenir shop, you can leave it in the store's parking lot. If it's early, you won't be able to park because the store isn't open. Depending on the person, you can finish watching it in less than an hour. I walked along the sidewalk of Genbikei, but it was broken in the middle 😅 I decided to take a side road to see if I could get a little closer to the waterfall, but it turned out to be a private house and I lost about 30 minutes, so I thought it would be better to go home because the trail ended at a dead end. The best view is from the top of the bridge. If you have time and it's not crowded, definitely try the Soratobu Dango. Please order You can order and eat at the gazebo along the river. They will watch you from the store above and provide tea for each person. The dumplings come in a box, so you can take them home as is. When you put the money for 500 yen x several boxes into the bucket and hit the board, At a shop where a string is pulled smoothly and a bucket is on top, Then tea and dumplings come down. That's all, It's even more fun if you try it🎶 Recommended 👌 This place is good, but I also recommend Geibikei 👍

Visited 28th October to see the autumn colours and this place didn't disappoint. I arrived at around 6am but the carpark wasn't open yet so I parked at the michi no eki 5 mins walk away. The view was just stunning, and not much people early in the morning. There's 3 bridges along the official route, and if you want to check out all 3 it'll take at least 40 mins to cover all. If you are planning on getting photos from the rocks be careful since it can get quite slippery.

Stop by in early Nov to take some photos of the fall foliage. It’s beautiful here. Maybe, because we came in the morning, there were not many people as usual to wait for their orders of「 郭公飛天糰子 」!

It was closed on a snowy Thursday. I don't know why they would keep it closed. Probably it is risky because of the slippery snow. Otherwise very quaint and scenic. Would.love to go back on a day when it is not closed. This place also has the gazebo where they serve food in a basket that is transferred via a zip line from the other side if the river. Quite cute and unique.

Beautiful natural area in Ichinoseki. A must visit if you are in town and worth it for a pit stop if you are passing by. There is a 30 minute and 90 minute walking route around the area with bridges over the gorge 🤩
Matt Klassen — Google review
Beautiful with plenty of scenic spots to take pictures until you've run out of drive space. You can make use of the zip line basket from a local food vendor to order treats while standing on the opposite side of the gorge. We did not partake of this, and instead crossed the bridge to sit down at their shop which has a public bathroom outside. There are a total of three bridges that cross the gorge and provide great places to take pictures. One of the bridges is a suspension bridge and is bouncy as you walk across. Much to the delight of some local sight seers when the two of us lumbered across causing a bit of sway. We visited in early November and the gorge was rimmed in gold and red hues. We stopped at several public benches and sat to soak up the sounds and sights. You can catch the city bus from Ichinoseki Station, it's a sort of off green bus. Ask the driver to confirm if you're on the right bus, make sure you take a ticket when boarding at the back. It was 490 yen per person and took 15 to 20 minutes. The return bus is just across the street from the drop off bus stop at the gorge.

Sights & Landmarks
Motsuji Temple is a serene and peaceful Buddhist temple situated in a vast garden adjacent to a rocky lake, surrounded by low hills. While the entry fee may be expensive, it is justified by the stunning views and high levels of maintenance. The natural pond setting is renowned for its cultural significance and festivals. Visitors can stroll around the pond to discover smaller historical sites associated with the founders of the area.
This was really beautiful because we had just visited Chuson-Ji temple and it was only a short walk over to this Motsuji temple. Again remarkable simplicity and beautiful especially with the snow all around. It is a Buddhist temple and is known for its beautiful Phoenix Hall which did not disappoint. The Phoenix Hall is a wooden structure built in the Amida style, which is characterized by its simple and elegant design. The hall is decorated with intricate carvings and paintings, and its interior is home to a large statue of Amida Buddha. The temple was founded in 998 by Fujiwara no Michinaga, a powerful courtier and politician during the Heian period (794-1185).

A very beautiful and scenic Buddhist temple that is designated as an UNESCO cultural/heritage site. There is a also a very large garden with a footpath that accompanies the temple and its buildings, which are placed around a scenic lake. The walk around the lake offers very different views depending on where you are on the path. You can see sites of where temples used to stand (some were burnt down in wars, etc.) as well as the ones that still remain to this day. During the walk around the lake on the footpath, there is a large bell in a belfry, a gentle stream that empties into the lake, as well as a set of strategically-placed rocks and stones made to resemble a landscape. Most definitely worth the entrance fee. Very highly recommended!

To be honest, the pond and the park were good when compared to the temple, then I find that entry fee was quite costlier but for the sake of beautiful view and high maintenance will cost more may be, not so far from the hiraizumi station
Nippon Bōken — Google review
The view of Buddhist Pure Land or something as described in the Buddhist bible Tipitaka. It's cool and calm and all that and one of the main attraction of Hiraizumi area so if you only have time for one temple in Hiraizumi or entire Iwate, make it here. 700 yen entrance fee, actually in walkable distance from Hiraizumi station.
Ratchawut Cherdchuvanit — Google review
There are two small temples here, but the original architecture has all been lost and all that is left is the Pure Land style garden around a large beautiful pond. It's serene and devoid of the commercialism of nearby Chusonji. You can feel the spiritual essence of the site even when there's no main thing to 'see' -- like the early Buddhist statues that represented the Buddha by just his footprints. If you're not familiar with the history, a guide could really help elucidate the meaning and significance of this sacred landscape.

Mountains
Mt. Kurikoma is a volcanic peak located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan with a height of 1,627m. It is renowned for its vibrant autumn trees and offers hiking trails as well as hot springs baths. The hike to the summit takes few hours and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery including onsens, lakes and fields from the Sukawa side. While not an extremely challenging mountain, it offers a rugged natural feel that hikers may prefer over well-manicured paths.
At over 5000 ft above elevation Mt Kurikoma in Miyagi Prefecture is a great place to hike to experience the wonderful scenery.

Might possibly be my favourite hike in Japan. It isn't an intense mountain but it does take a few hours. From the Sukawa side of the hike, there are onsens, lakes, fields - the path isn't as well kept but I prefer the rugged, natural feel of the hike. The view from the summit was spectacular!

The course is well maintained and hiking level rather than climbing. It is unlikely that you will get lost in the fog. It was crowded from the parking lot because it was Sunday of the autumnal season. The course and the summit are full of people. Chūson-ji is a renowned temple that has a museum, Noh stage, and mausoleum showcasing 12th-century mummified remains. It was established in the year 850, and its main attraction is the Konjikido, also known as the Golden Hall, which was built in 1124. The first Ou Fujiwara lord Kiyohara visited this place on May 2nd and admired it greatly.
Quite a nice small trek to the temple. I think the walk to the temple is more enjoyable than the destination. In winter the snow is very slippery so you need snow boots. They offer ropes to tie to your shoes for grip. The road up initially is VERY slippery.

Amazing view and historical site, came on fall season 2023, not a very touristy place hence can feel the more serenity side of Japan. Use comfy shoes coz slight hike is needed from gateway. If you came from hiraizumi station, use bus or bike, you can walk and enjoy the road (just like we did) but it’s quite far

I love this place when I visit on May 2nd. The maple trees are in shining green so I can imagine it must be gorgeous at Koyo season which is beginning of November. Pure Weiss — Google review
A delightfully simple but very beautiful place especially as we visited there in winter. The simplicity of the building temple itself is wonderful. I certainly can see why it is designated as a National Treasure of Japan. The temple was founded in 1105 by Fujiwara Kiyohira, the founder of the Northern Fujiwara clan. Chuson-ji was the clan's菩提寺 (bodaiji), or mortuary temple, and was used as the burial place for many of the clan's members. The temple complex includes a number of important buildings, including the Konjikido, which is a National Treasure and is considered to be one of the finest examples of Japanese Buddhist architecture.
Ross Daniels — Google review
I am glad I visited this majestic place during fall. The buildings seamlessly blend with the surrounding nature. Compared to Yamadera, another well-known temple of Tohoku which was originally constructed by Enin, Chuson-ji spans across a wider area and offers a real glimpse of the past. Unlike other places listed as UNESCO world heritages, this one isn’t “branded” as such through posters and signboards (I personally didn’t see the symbol of UNESCO anywhere) and may be that’s the reason why one can feel the authenticity and simplicity of the place as it had been throughout the years.
Maya Kenova — Google review
Beautiful and historic temple complex with the surrounding nature. The museum and konjikido paid area is worth for visiting. Recommend going early in the morning because there’s less people. As April 2023, loop bus runs only weekend and holidays. I prefer to take a bus (run every hour) from Ichinoseki sta. that connects to the shinkansen or use a taxi in front of Hiraizumi sta.

Sake Brewery Seki no Ichi is a nostalgic restaurant with a beautiful building that has been reinforced after the 2011 earthquake. The place offers great craft beers and a variety of mochi to enjoy. It also features a dark and mysterious cafe, adding to its allure. Visitors can look forward to trying out the sake and beef shabu-shabu, which are highly recommended. Additionally, there's a souvenir shop next to the restaurant for those looking for mementos.
The local food at the restaurant was so gewd, and the beer flight was amazing as well. The architecture of the goods building was resuited with more beams for support, since it toppled over during the 2011 earthquake. I really want to come back for more beer, and to check out that dark and mysterious cafe. 5 stars for sweet staff members, food, and beer.

This is an old nihonshu brewery with a number of interesting old buildings, a museum, a gift shop with limited tasting, a cafe, a beer brewery, and a restaurant specializing in local delicacies. The nihonshu and beer are great -- especially the light and refreshing ale flavored with the peppery sansho herb. The food is great -- I got mulberry leaf udon, mixed mochi dishes, and tempura for a reasonable 1600 yen. Just the museum was not so interesting for 300 yen and I wish there had been more information about things to do there, tastings, and the food -- and I can speak and read Japanese. There are other interesting things nearby, though, including an old samurai home next to a quaint 19th century church.

There was a wait (during Golden Week, expected), and it was expensive (again, expected), but it was the best meal I've had in the 3 years I've lived in Japan. I will dream of the sake and beef shabu-shabu even 50 years from now. If you have the time and the yen for it, I guarantee you will not regret it.
Alexa Fisher — Google review
Restaurant and sake/beer brewery featuring several local variations on mochi. Worth visiting for the food alone, but the beer is also some of the best craft beer I've encountered in Japan. Well hopped and flavourful, a far cry from the tourism-focussed 'craft' beers. The sake is also quite good - tastings are available of all in house sake, including the one that's ¥5000 per bottle. There's also a live unpasteurised sake with active koji, which is effervescent and quite delicious.

Fujisei offers a unique dining experience with its 9-flavor mochi set, featuring a variety of savory and slightly sweet flavors, including one with natto. The restaurant's beautiful atmosphere and attentive staff contribute to the overall delightful experience. Visitors can also enjoy traditional Japanese dishes, with vegetarian options available upon request. This is definitely a must-visit for those looking to embark on a culinary adventure while savoring the pride of the town's love for mochi.
The restaurant is beautiful, dishes are delightful. I tried the traditional Japanese dish. I'm vegetarian and chef made a vegetarian dish just for me, employes are really professionals and kind. The restaurant atmosphere are really good too. Also I tried mochis and they were all very good!!! Thank you very much for this meal!

Ordered a set of "mochi-zen". "Mochi zen" is served for the marriage ceremony or celebration events in Ichonoseki city. It was great to eat such dishes at the restaurant. It's better to call in advance if you want to visit and experience the dishes.

Totally new mochi experience for me. Mochi in nine different flavors/seasoning is a must try for those who are seeking food adventure. The ambience of the place was also good!

What a lovely way to eat mochi! I never imagined mochi could be served in savory dishes, but it worked very well! The 9-flavor set had a large variety of slightly-sweet, gingery, etc. palattes. There is natto in one, so beware of that. The shop owner came and chatted with me (in Japanese), he seems so proud of his town's love for mochi.
Stephanie C (StephySays) — Google review
They do a good mochi set with a variety of different sauces, both sweet and savoury, accompanied by soup and pickles. Reasonably priced at 1600 yen, and a good way to get a number of different flavours; even if some aren't to taste (natto), there's definitely something you'll like!

I want to give this place a full 5-stars... but, the problem is.... it is soooooo fuuuuuuuuuul during the lunch time. No wonder, the foods are so good and awesome. But, waaaah, you will need a but more patience for waiting :)

Soba noodle shop
Experience the delectable pleasure of indulging in long, substantial, and incredibly tasty chewy noodles at Aoba Chokurian. This exceptional soba noodle shop offers a delightful menu infused with the freshness of grilled oil for their tempura dishes, making it an irresistible choice for any lover of this traditional Japanese cuisine. The inviting ambiance coupled with friendly service complements the consistently delicious offerings.
Be ready for long thick delicious chewy noodles with the fresh taste grilling oil for the tempura, I recommend this place to any Soba lover. I ordered tempura Soba 🍜 and as usual it’s always delicious with friendly environment and a 😊 smile. Thank you 🙏 so much for helping me order since I can’t read the menu well 🤓.

We got there 10 minutes before the opening time but the seats were already full. You first place your order in the back of the restaurant near the cash register and get a number which they'll call out as they bring your food to your seat. Also, don't be shy about sharing a table with a stranger. Due to limited space you're likely to be day wherever there is an opening. I have never seen soba as thick as the soba from this restaurant and each noodle is super long. The noodles are chewy and the taste is mild. The dipping sauce was too sweet and too strong for my preference, however. Overall, I found it a very unique soba noodle shop.

It didn't suit me and my companion. The tempura is also open so it doesn't fit into the soba choko. . . Everyone ate everything. (Translated by Google) It was my first time to eat soba noodles that were so thick. The corner of the soba is not upright. The scent of buckwheat is weak. A large serving will give you an amazing amount, Quite a few people were eating large portions of tempura. The condiment is grated maple leaves and no wasabi. Since the soba noodles are thick, the grated maple sauce went well with it. Sobayu is served in a pot around the time you eat it. It's not something I made myself, so it's boiled water like thin water. When you enter the store, buy a meal ticket at the counter in the back. Then, when you are seated, your number is called and you are served soba noodles. I had some rare Iwate soba noodles.

Ramen restaurant
Ramen Marucho, a conveniently located eatery near the station with excellent value for money, offers a delightful dining experience. Situated just a short three-minute walk from the ticket gate, this establishment serves up delicious ramen and tsukemen dishes. The noodles are thick and substantial, providing a satisfying chewiness that pairs perfectly with the light and flavorsome soup. The broth effortlessly coats each strand of noodle without becoming overly intertwined.
(Translated by Google) Since I came to Ichinoseki, I was looking for a ramen shop near the station, and I found this shop with good reviews, so I came to the shop for the first time. The shop is on the first floor of a multi-tenant building right in front of Ichinoseki Station. There is also an Indian curry shop in the building, which gives a sense of multinationality. There is no parking lot in front of the shop, so it is best to park your car in the municipal parking lot in front of the station. * 100 yen per hour Since the curtain was reversed, I thought "Today is a store holiday?", But I was relieved because it was open properly. It is a system to purchase meal tickets at the ticket vending machine on the right side of the entrance. The menu is a simple lineup of ramen, tsukemen, rice, and dumplings. This time I ordered ramen (650 yen) and taste ball (100 yen). When you sit at the counter, you can see it Anxious phrase "ramen is a local food" The served ramen is a soy sauce ramen with dried bonito broth. The soup was hot. The noodles were thin and small and easy to put in your mouth. The taste ball is. .. .. Unfortunately, it seems that the taste is not fully stained to the inside. It might have been better not to add this. Even so, the ramen itself is reasonably priced despite its location in front of the station, and the cost performance is sufficient. The ramen itself tastes good, but I'd be happy if you could get a discount when using the parking lot. This time it was a treat! !!

Also, it comes with 4 slices of char siu, which is very delicious! ! "It was the best when I ate noodles with char siu." I felt like I needed to devise a little way to eat it, but it's delicious.
