Theme Parks
The Esashi Fujiwara Heritage Park is a theme park designed to resemble the Heian period buildings. It is ideal for tourists interested in Japanese history and provides interactive costume displays depicting the lifestyle of that time. The park offers two courses, a full 2-hour course and a shorter 50-minute route that comes with a complimentary photo in traditional attire. Visitors receive peanuts and pocket warmers called KAIRO with their entrance ticket.
Went here with a group from Taiwan! The staff was incredibly warm and inviting. There were so many quality activities arranged for us. If you're looking for a fun time with friends and less of a history lesson then this place is perfect. Samurai and kimono dress up. Archery, forced perspective displays, drum performance, fish feeding and more. I thoroughly enjoyed the forced perspective display. One particular individual from the staff was so helpful, and hilarious. Good excitement was contagious. The bathrooms were very clean. Finally they offer the sale of fresh apples. Should you require lunch there is a small cantina/cafeteria. When we left on the tour bus, the staff waved us a good journey from when we drove by them all the way to the exit. Heartwarming.

An experience of the culture of Japan and Tohoku region of 10 centuries ago. Used as a filming location for numerous TV dramas and movies. This theme park in the style of a capital city exudes a rich cultural heritage with its magnificent red buildings and exquisite landscapes gardens. The atmosphere here evokes memories of the heyday of Kyoto or Hiraizumi.

Very nice place and very good service staff and kindly to explain and introduce the facilities of the village. It can experience good old Japan dressed styles. Very enjoyable on it.

Strictly for Japanese history buffs but also good for the average tourists who want a taste of ancient Japan and the lifestyle of that time. The full course is over 2 hours but there is a shorter route of about 50 minutes which also includes a free photo in traditional costume. You get a packet of peanuts and a KAIRO (pocket size warmer) with the entrance ticket. I visited the place in winters and had the place to myself on a Saturday afternoon. It looks beautiful when covered in snow and the contrast with the blue sky/orange buildings is quite good.
Vinayak Bhardwaj — Google review
Visited there at 15:30, but the gate would close at 16:00. Better to visit this heritage park in the morning.
SATOSHI MATSUMOTO (Sato) — Google review
Here it is possible to imagine what it was like in the era of 1100s' Japan. The rulers here tried to maintain peace and prosper. Before visiting Hiraizumi, where many spots are registered as world heritage, it is good to come here first as an introduction.

Geto Kogen Resort

Ski resort
Outdoor Activities
Geto Kogen Resort is a popular skiing destination that boasts of excellent quality and quantity of snow, as well as glade trails for snowboarding. The resort also features an onsen spa and indoor play area for kids. For those unfamiliar with the terrain, it's recommended to use Geto's guide service to explore the deep powder snow. Accommodation options include communal dorm rooms with buffet dinner and breakfast or private rooms with basic amenities at around 10,000 yen per person.
Powder on powder. Do you like powder snow? AWESOME tree runs that you can level up on with increasing difficulty. The gondolas are kind of busy, but you'll need the time to relax to prepare you to go on your runs.
Austin Chien — Google review
Geto Ski resort in Iwate was nice. The snow at the resort is special, in that it is a denser, wetter, powder that can take a little bit of practice to get used to as a beginner. The medics on site are also were wonderful. And the staff who assisted me, apart from the lift ticket counter, we’re lovely and patient. But the visitors at the resort were some of the worst I’ve encountered in Tohoku. Some were smoking outside in the ski parking area right as you exit the main lodge when there was a smoking section inside. One, in particular, put me on crutches due to mean spirited behaviour on a beginner slope. But I digress. The resort is huge and often very busy during peak season. The gondola wait line can take a good chunk of time just to get to the gondolas and then the additional time it takes to reach the summit. If you are only going for a few hours, it’s something you should definitely factor in. The food that we ordered was the worst katsu I’ve ever eaten in my life. It cost around ¥1200. It was rubbery, overcooked (or nuked in the microwave), and plain inedible. I know the chef was skilled because it takes true talent to mess up katsu that bad. The other sides and the rice were delicious though. The slopes themselves were nice. The A1 course, although marked for beginners, beware that they are not smoothly groomed. It was a nice course once I got the hang of it, with two main steeper inclines and flattened points in between. They had a nice snowboarding park area towards the bottom that could easily be used for practicing and mastering jumps and tricks. Even though the resort was crowded, the slope had waves of people with lulls inbetween that made it a nice experience overall for learning in new snow conditions. For more advanced skiers and boarders, there are a plethora of options. Take note of the trail board, as it will alert you to changing conditions, such as avalanche warnings.
Zillah — Google review
It's now no.1 ski/snowboarding resort in my list! I stayed for 5 days in the resort itself and it was a charm. The weather was too windy at the beginning but when it cleared up, the view from the common lodge was spectacular! 🤩 The resort also has big open air bath (rotenburo) and sauna. The food didnt repeat when I was there and am grateful that it's not too much as I dont want to put in weight. The slopes are amazing! There are steep parts on the beginner runs but otherwise really good! The resort cafeteria and main building also feels modern and new. For the price of staying at the base of the lifts / gondola, having delicious breakfast and dinner (and access to other options), having an open-air bath and sauna, I think this place is really worth going! I can't wait to go back!!!
M R — Google review
No question about the amount or the quality of the snow. Snowboarding in the trees is sublime however I would recommend using Geto's guide service if you're not familiar with the terrain. 3000 yen will get you guided into some of the deepest powder snow you're ever likely to encounter. You can stay in the hotel where you can stay in a communal dorm room inclusive of buffet dinner and breakfast or if in a small group you can rent a private room with very basic accommodation for about 10,000 yen pp. The onsen in the hotel is very nice too.
Daniel Harper — Google review
it open til may. a long term seasons, it have enough snow. price is fair. rental service is good. but in spring, the beginner slope is too short
AAPL HK — Google review
I went to geto kogen in late december and it was very snowy and ridiculously windy. Aside from that it's a big ski resort with a lot of shops and restaurants in the building at the bottom it's almost like an airport. Outside there are lots of slopes for basically all levels of skiing. There is a cable car which takes you to the top from which there are a couple easy routes and some harder routes. There is also a more simple lift which doesn't take you far up the mountain (I think the other lifts were closed).
Caleb Gelsthorpe — Google review
This mountain is awesome, lots of areas to cut through trees, and tons of powder. On this visit it was almost 4.5 meters (about 14 ft.) Facilities are really good too, there's a huge inside play area for kids with a large trampoline
Nathaniel Hayes — Google review
Great resort, a lot of variety in the runs and amenities offered, a large parking lot and great powder.

Great little resort. For northern Tohoku, this resort consistently receives the most powder every year. The resort also has a great onsen and skiers bed for overnight stays.
Paul C — Google review
I drove up for an early morning sesh on a powder day hoping to try out some rad runs. Parked the car, looked up at the slopes, watched the locals carve, got scared, drove home. 5 stars because the parking attendees were efficient

Good for one day. Unless it's had an outstanding overnight snowfall which is like anywhere. Pretty small place. Unfortunately for me there was not much snow down. That isn't geto's fault

Beautifully carved wooden temple. So quiet. Lovely place to go and relax

The Kokusekiji temple is home to the annual sominsai. A winter water purification ceremony. Hundreds of men walk around in nothing but loincloth and douse themselves in cold water to purifying themselves. The festivities last all night. It ends with the winner taking home a somin bukuro or lucky bag. The festival is held every year around February 10th

When you step into the precincts, you will notice the Yakushi-do Hall with its open-air exterior in front, the long earthen walled citadel on the right, and the bell tower that stands above it, which looks like a tea room.In front of the hall, there is a guardian dog made of Nanbu Iron. will confront you. The principal image, Yakushi-sama, is enshrined in the treasure hall. This is one of Japan's oldest carved wooden Buddhas made by Jogan, and I was overwhelmed by its majesty at first sight. Rugged and high spiral hair, slanted stern eyes, sunken cheeks, crow-like shoulders, and legs crossed in a sacrificial position, he is a northern Buddha with a majesty that makes you cry, clearly different from other Jogan Yakushi. I got the impression that he was modeled after Aterui, the king of Emishi. Advance reservations are required for viewing, but you can also make reservations on LINE. The head priest of this temple, where the violent Sominsai festival takes place, is a friendly woman. It is also significant that it is the female chief priest who throws in the Sominbukuro at the festival. Around 8pm, the paid parking lot was empty and there were about 5 cars lined up, but when I went to the shrine parking lot, there were 2 spaces available so I parked there. I felt like I could park about 20 cars, but there were a few cars going home, so I managed to park there. The road is narrow and crowded, so if you wait until it's empty, you'll probably want to walk around the park and check out the parking lot. I was relieved to find a parking lot as I drove into the shrine to avoid the crowds. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom and very beautiful. The center of the park is bright with lights and lanterns, but the outside is dark with no lights and there are no people, so if you want to enjoy the cherry blossoms in peace, it might be better to go there. There was a hanami center and what looked like a giant food stall, with a wide variety of menus such as ramen and curry rice, and plenty of table seats, but it was very crowded and people were lining up outside. If you're at the end of the line, you'll have to wait about 20 to 30 minutes. The stalls were so crowded that it was difficult to walk around. He worked hard at his studies and became a doctor, and at the age of 24 he rose through the ranks to become the dean of a medical school and hospital director. He then joined the Health Bureau of the Ministry of Home Affairs and was involved in a major cholera quarantine project. He became the Governor-General of Taiwan and was called the father of Taiwan's modernization, and was instrumental in the modernization of Manchuria. When he became the mayor of Tokyo, he focused on rebuilding rather than recovering from the Great Kanto Earthquake...I don't think he had time to sleep or rest.
