The Miyazawa Kenji Museum is dedicated to the life and works of the versatile Japanese author, who dabbled in fields such as Archaeology, Agriculture, Astronomy, and Cosmology. He was renowned for his children's stories and fairy tales like The Life of Guskou Boduri and The Restaurant of A Many Orders. Located on a hillside, the museum can be accessed by a long stairway.
I had never known any of the things about Miyazawa that were presented here. It is worth the trip if you are familiar with hisnworks like the "restaurant with many orders". 注文の多い料理店

More user friendly than some museums, but every panel must be accessed through a QR code for English translations, making the experience slightly clunky and longer than it should be. Good to visit if familiar with Miyazawa's work, but otherwise not a must see attraction
Troy Stade — Google review
Kenji Miyazawa is quite the well-rounded writer. He delved into Archeology, Agriculture, and a bit of Astronomy and Cosmology. If you watched the anime movie entitled The Life if Guskou Boduri, the original story is Kenji's work. He is known for his children'e stories and fairy tales. If you are wondering about the presence of cat imagery in the place, read The Restaurant of A Many Orders.

The museum is a great place to visit, its a little out of the way so worth driving to - if you do decide to walk though there is a fairly lengthy stairway up the side of the hill that taunts you by telling you how many steps there are at the bottom haha - its a small museum so doesnt take long to walk around
Anthony Hopper — Google review
From the balcony you can look down the city of Hanamaki over Kitakami river. The exhibition is also interesting as it gathers info by different aspects such as science or religion.
Ren Kurihara — Google review
A very interesting place. It would be very helpful for non Japanese speaking tourists if an English translation was available as Miyagawa Kenji is read in translation around the world.

(Translated by Google) Kamaishi Daikannon There is a paid parking lot above the reception, but it is next to the parking lot. After checking in, there is a long escalator that takes you to the top, making it relatively easy even for people with weak legs. The precincts from where the escalator reaches the top. The large Kannon can be visited inside and there is an observation deck at the top. And here is the founder of Buddhism There is a Buddhist reliquary hall where the Buddha's ashes are enshrined. In the basement of the Buddha Shariden are enshrined stone statues of famous high priests of all the founders of Japanese Buddhism, and in the center is enshrined Aizen Myo-o-o, who is said to bring good luck in love and marriage. In front of the Great Kannon, there are three sacred places in Japan for lovers. There were many foreigners. Anyway, the view of the wonderful Pacific Ocean from Gokuraku Bridge in the precincts of the hill is The paradise of this world✨🙏✨ It seems to be imitating It is a shame that Nakamise Street, which lies beneath such a sacred area, has become deserted.

Built in 1970, this treasure is worth the trip. The surrounding area is quite stunning. It is near the coast with a lovely view. I was able to climb up and learn a lot from the museum inside. Most of all, I was blown away by the original 33 Kannon sculptures. Each one is so expressive and says so much about the function and personality of each iteration of the Bodhisattva. I was quite moved and want to learn more. It seemed like the same sculptor created the seven lucky gods. Everything inside is very unique and stylish. I don’t see works like that in other similar places of worship that I have visited. Truly unique. Thank you 🙏🎉😄

(Translated by Google) Kamaishi = Kamaishi Kannon “Why don’t you go to Kamaishi and see Kannon?” It makes the story flow better. In the first place, my purpose was to get the ``Roadside Station Card'', ``Roadside Station Ticket'', ``Manhole Card'', ``Dam Card'', and ``Flood Gate/Seawall Card'' to Kamaishi. That's why I skipped it... As expected, I never visit it. So I decided to visit this time (R5.11.26) to get the ``2nd Roadside Station Card'' and the ``Floodgate/Seawall Card.'' I thought it would be possible to drive to the Kannon statue, but there is a fee for parking at the parking lot near the Kannon statue. I had no choice but to park in the third parking lot at the entrance and head there on foot. According to the story, there are many souvenir shops? … It's...a ruin! ! If you go further, you'll probably have to pay to see it... I had imagined that, so no problem. Pay the admission fee and go up the escalator. Well, the escalator... it's quite steep! ! Let's go inside the Kannon statue A spiral staircase like a lighthouse up to the observation deck As you climb up while looking at the Seven Lucky Gods on the pillars... Go to a place where you can get a panoramic view of Kamaishi Port. The scaffolding is narrower than the lighthouse, so I don't think it will be possible to go very long. So, I decided to finish taking photos early and head down. It was only a 10 minute viewing. On the way back, I ended up going down the steep slope next to the escalator exit to avoid slipping. In a way, it was good exercise.

Easy to get to - there is a bus that stops right outside theain road, that comes from Kamaishi Station. As of July 2023, it costs 300 yen. Temple is beautiful and it was nice to be able to go inside and up. Also - コインロッカー in the front of the entrance!

(Translated by Google) A dignified Kannon statue is erected on top of a small mountain. The sight of him standing so straight, as if watching over the Minamisanriku coast with a calm expression, made me feel like my back was straightening. It was a sunny autumn day and the refreshing breeze from the sea felt nice. Admission fee was 500 yen for adults. There is a parking lot near Kannon-sama, but there is a fee. You can easily walk to Kannon statue using the free parking lot at the foot of the mountain! Perhaps it's seasonal, but there were stink bugs everywhere, so I recommend walking around so you don't step on them.

Beautiful, fascinating dai-kannon. Temple grounds are beautiful, and clean. You can climb stairs inside for a beautiful view from the top - along the way there are things to see (and I am forgetting what they are called but will fix in a future edit) and it is well worth an hour of your time.

I'm giving this place 5 since it's so big you can see it for miles around. We were at the observation area above Sendai and should see it towering over the area.

I've visited this place often, usually every 7 to 10 years. This visit during March was sad. Since the tsunami, alot of the businesses have closed, making this village more like a ghost town. I've been coming here since I was nine...The statue is still as beautiful as it was in the beginning and if you like buddism, you'll appreciate the walk to the top.
Charlotte T — Google review
It’s a really beautiful place, I think I just wasn’t feeling it. 300¥ for the parking lot at the top (there’s free parking a bit below). 500¥ to enter. There’s a small English brochure they give you at the beginning, but it doesn’t have much detail.

The opening hours are not the good ones. I’ve been here in April so normally that’s the summer schedule but it close at 15:00 or maybe that’s the last entry not sure and i arrived at 15:01 so.. Like everything in Japan it closed too early. But you should have a great view on the bay so it would be nice

Perhaps it will strike you as a must see destination, being a museum to the history of industry, both in Kamaishi and Japan generally, but for non Japanese speakers the museum is a bit of a miss, with only the brochure upon entry providing any real level of English language support - otherwise it's just examples of iron ore and iron tools with very little context. The scale model smelter demonstration at the start of the museum is visually impressive, however not necessarily worth visiting for that alone

Japan's first Western-style blast furnace was built in Kamaishi by Morioka feudal retainer Takato Oshima and others, and since then Kamaishi has prospered as an iron town.
