We stopped at a recommended restaurant called Mr. Maxie's for a late lunch. The food was delicious and we enjoyed the view of the ocean from the second-story location. They serve Caribbean-inspired dishes, such as chicken with coconut milk-infused rice and beans. The restaurant accepts all major credit cards except for American Express, which is worth noting since it differs from other Costa Rican businesses. Mr.
We stopped here for a late lunch on the recommendation of an earlier tour guide. The food was delicious and because the restaurant is on the second story, you have a fairly good view of the ocean while eating. I had the chicken plate that included Caribbean style rice and beans that's made with coconut milk. A few notes: Sign on the restaurant says the name is now Mr. Maxie's. They do not accept American Express like most Costa Rican businesses.

This place is completely closed and run down, don't come here (December 2023). If you can find it elsewhere, it is great!

Muy rica la comida. Los jugos son increiblemente frescos. Very tasty food and the juices are super fresh. The price are not bad I meant In Puerto viejo are like that the prices. One amazing things is the distance from the beach Its super close jejeje. Recomended if you are around.

Lovely place with a great view during the day, the food is very good, great taste and Caribbean flavors, I had the red snapper and it was awesome, it comes with the famous Rice and beans, plantains, the special sauce the fish came was lovely. It's nice for families and groups of friends. Definitely if you go to Manzanillo visit this place.
Guilberth Bermudez — Google review
The food is amazing but the service was lousy. The place was understaffed and it took for ever to order, to receive or to pay. It’s the Caribbean so things are a-lot more relax and take time but this was on a different level. But the place is nice and the food is great!
Matthew Lloyd — Google review
25 mins and didn’t get anyone to get my order. My table was dirty and the building looks older and older every time I go to Manzanillo. People say they have one of the greatest “Rise and Beans” but honestly, I would give a try somewhere in else, nowadays you can find better taste for a better budget.
David Ávila Fuentes — Google review
The service was friendly but very slow. The menu is deceptive. They have Lobster on the menu, but no description of how it was cooked, and no options. The expensive lobster came covered in onion and tomatoes. I took a bite for fun, and it was disgusting to my taste. I sent it back and was told that since I touched it, there was no recourse. I wonder, if I had not touched it - would they have served it to someone else. All travellers, avoid this place!!! Horrible experience. There are many other great places to eat.
B Thomas — Google review
THE BEST RICE & BEANS. We definitely waited awhile for our food, but it was worth the wait. Times are tough and the service industry has been hit hard, so it's understandable. We got the rice and beans with chicken. The marinade was to die for. I can't say enough about the spectacular flavors. If you're in Manzanillo, you need to stop at Maxis.

The Cool and Calm Cafe in Manzanillo, Costa Rica is receiving high praise for its exceptional quality. Unlike many disappointments among the numerous restaurants in the area, this establishment truly lives up to its reputation. One standout dish is their grilled red snapper, which is cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Additionally, their ribs are juicy and accompanied by an exquisite basting sauce that takes it to another level.
Best Caribbean Cuisine made with friendly loving vibes in Manzanillo, Costa Rica. My best advice is to stop in and meet the owners Andy and Stella they are the best. We ate here twice and most likely come back for a third time soon. Their shrimp was amazing and the Caribbean chicken fell off the bone. They really know what they are doing! Check out my photos! They even have monkeys!
Donna Berryhill — Google review
I cannot comment on the food but I did see the vibes and the portion size for what they are serving. Definitely a vibe to check out if in Manzanillo area. Went on a tour and my friends client ordered a chicken dinner with rice and beans to go it smelled good. Lol 😂
Chef Naomi — Google review
Wow - this resto is really great. I've been in Costa Rica for over 6 months and have eaten at many many restos - most are disappointing and don't live up to their reviews. I would say the opposite is true of Cool and Calm - their google rating doesn't do them justice. I ordered their grilled red snapper and threw in a rib on the side - I'm a boss like that. Honestly, this was the best fish I've eaten in the 6 months here - so perfectly cooked and flavourful. The rib was delicious as well - super juicy and that basting sauce was next level!!!! They use coconut husks to fire the grill and I think that flavour adds something extra special. Definitely worth a trip to Manzanillo just to eat here.

A must stop place for some street bbq in an authentic Caribbean style. Had the ribs and the sword fish. My god it was amazing. Plus the atmosphere is nice. People need to chill. It’s not fine dining. But it is awesome, great priced food. Enjoy!
Phil Ritter — Google review
Succulent bbq to write home about on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast. Chef Andy is the master of this roadside grill that lures you in with the smoky aroma of the freshest seafood, veggies, and ribs. Did I mention the grilled pineapple dripping with smoky sweetness. The place is brightly colored in red, yellow and green with pumping Soca and Reggae music. A really chilled place for ice-cold beers and finger-licking food!
Jennifer FfrenchParker — Google review
The owner of the place we're staying suggested this place and he was so right. Andy is a wonderful, happy, smiling person who tends to the BBQ with love. We had amazing chicken and pork belly from the barbie, with sweetest grilled bananas and corn. The jamaican vibe is awesome too and the prices-a real bargain. Next time my hubby will go fising with Andy and I shall take his cooking class. Pura vida!
Aleksandra Zarak — Google review
Amazing JAMAICAN cuisine in Costa Rica. Seriously, I've traveled extensively throughout all of Jamaica and eaten chicken and peas & rice there and most of the caribbean restaurants in South Florida and Andy's peas & rice and chicken from the grill were HANDS DOWN THE BEST!! Neither needed any gravy, seasoned to perfection 👌🏼 Hubby had the fried red snapper and it was just as delicious and perfectly seasoned. This will be a must stop when we're back in Costa Rica 😋
Tosha Wedderburn — Google review
Best fried red snapper ever I had ever had! Colorful place and nice vibes! Chris the owner is a very nice person.
Johnny Lopez Sibaja — Google review
Food and service was amazing. Atmosphere was nice. The staff super friendly. Only reason for a 4 star was pricing. Should have done some more research. Ordered 3 grilled lobster dinners( for 3 of us) they were pretty big but pricing was over the top. Was just enjoying myself so didn't pay to much attention to cost. Checking my Cc statement this morning the 3 dinners were $334.00 USD. That means each meal was 100.00 USD. I'm just going to write it off as lesson learned. If not for that we had a very nice experience there!
Brian Reger — Google review
Amazing Caribbean food and delicious frozen drinks. Everything here is great and a huge portion! Fish tacos, ceviche and grilled pork are just a few of my favorites. 10/10 Chef Andy is the man 🤙 -also the bad reviews are ignorant Americans looking for Texas Roadhouse steaks in Costa Rica… good luck with that
Jason Fulbright — Google review
Chill outdoor joint located a couple blocks from the beach and right across from prime jungle. You can see/hear howler monkeys bellowing from the woods as you eat. Major Rasta vibes and a West Virginia flag (wild and wonderfull) hung on the bar. Food was pretty good, ceviche is a mountain of fish. I would say avoid the ribs from the grill as they're mostly fat and you'll be sour if you're used to American ribs. Amazing pina colada. My server was a bit disinterested but still a great experience. I highly recommend walking from Punta Uva to Manzanillo and back along the beach/beach side road. One of the best hikes of my life.

The bar and grill Hot Rocks is a popular spot in Puerto Viejo for locals and tourists alike. With live music every night, it's always lively and the atmosphere is fantastic. The food is decent, but don't expect anything fancy - this place is all about the fun! Prices are reasonable too.
Nice lunch here with kids (10 and 9). We had the beef fajitas, a salad, guacamole and chips, jalapenos basket and hot dog and they were all delicious. The service was fast and the waiter really nice.
Valentina ch — Google review
We love the atmosphere and staff, cheap beer and food prices are a perk. Antonio has been our regular server and he's great, goes above and beyond to help us out. We also had a server Jose on our first visit that was wonderful. Both bartenders have helped us translate Spanish, answered questions about the area and were very friendly. Great local watering hole.
Jacki Wlodarczyk — Google review
Went on a Saturday with my cousins. Got a table near the pool tables. Service was random and kind of slow. Food was fine, the menu is pretty extensive. My cousin LOVED the chicken fajitas, and couldn't stop raving about them. The atmosphere is the real draw. The entertainment was amazing! Super fun place, very local, highly recommended.
LD BG — Google review
Marlin was a bit tuff. It was my first time ever having it so I don't know what it was supposed to be like. Other than that I love the atmosphere they had live music and it really seemed to be the happening spot.
MiLana — Google review
Used to be a favorite for me, but not anymore. Worst service I have ever experienced in Puerto and the food is not good. The pizza is like what they serve in public school cafeterias. The ceviche was a little chewy. The place has become filled with tourists. The live music and fire dancers were cool... But the overall vibe of the place isn't what it used to be. If you go, sit at the bar, enjoy the swings. Do not sit at a table. We ordered a tower of beer and it took almost an hour before it was brought out. In response to the owner's comment below (I don't see a way to respond personally)... I wish I could remember the name of our waiter. He was tall and muscular. But there were many waiters around and no one seemed to pay any attention to us. We would stop different waiters to ask what was going on, and they would just respond that they would go get our waiter for us.. but he never came by. No one checked on us, our bill took forever to come out. We almost threw some cash on the table and just left. If I do return, I will just sit at the bar near the street. This was my first time to sit at a table and I will not do that again.

Food was amazing. They tend to make different performances throughout the week. Really entertaining place, and awesome atmosphere. The prices were just right. Would totally come back here.
Donovan Rivas — Google review
Large, beachfront location with a live band stage and a couple pool tables. It tends to have a lively crowd but is still family-friendly. For a bar, the food proved remarkably good and not expensive. Would recommend a visit
Mike Marshall — Google review
Decent sports bar in town. A few TV screens, 2 pool tables, and live music everytime we visited. They even showed big sporting events like the superbowl. The food was ok and the service a little slow. Compared to other big restaurants here, only a few of them spoke a little English. Prices were ok as well.
David Behbahani — Google review
This is my review, I’ve been going to this place for about 6 years now, today was the most disappointing meal I’ve ever had the chicken tasted old and dry. As this was my birthday outing, I did complain to the server, their answer was a chef change, and they did not attempt to fix the issue, they just stated it was chef’s fault. The servers are always great but I would not say that’s enough to keep coming back to this place. Hopefully this doesn’t happen to you. Again just a shame this use to be a great place to eat. Not my first bad experience, but my last bad experience wasn’t really with the food but the service since the took waay to long to take the order. And this was today. 1 of July 2023, we did ask to speak to someone else all they told us they were gonna do was send pictures of the chicken we did not eat, to the manager/owner but we did not get any other option to even change it out, we did pay in full our bill since we do not believe in stealing anything but, it what I find truly disappointing is the response to the issue, at the restaurant. I might give it another change although highly unlikely…

This was the first time I had been back in two years and I had such a lovely time. I was the first person waiting outside before the restaurant opened. Before I was able to enter, Thirlie took his time to make sure everything was in excellent condition before guests were seated. Fortunately a group of sunburned individuals walked in unannounced causing Thirlie to let me in sooner, While I was eating I was very happy to see that the Owner is still the same. He is always making sure he is avoiding eye contact and continues to say hello without saying words. The staff is also still the same. They give you your space. If you need something, it is best to get up and get it yourself. The food is even better. It is presented so beautifully it makes you want more. You can see the difference in pictures from all my other reviews. The buffalo chicken wings were so tasty. I ate the buffalo before the wings. The shrimp rice was so sweet that I added the buffalo sauce to tone it down. Yummy. My favorite part was eating in the dark. I had to use the flash to see the food quality. I now remember why I was gone 2 years. I came back to see the show. The restaurant is the show.

I did not like my food. The server asked if I wanted to take my food home because she saw my plate was still full. She even asked if she could get me something else, but I decided against it because my friend's food did not look tempting either. We ordered drinks, but my Pina Colada was like a melted milkshake. I asked for more water, and the server never came back. I still gave them a 4/5 because the place was packed, and there was a line wrapped around the corner. I had a lot of fun there with the live band. They even have a dance floor. I won’t be back for the food or drinks, but I would happily come back for the atmosphere.
Lucy Francois — Google review
It's all about the atmosphere. The live band was amazing! The guacamole and Chios plate was quite small but tasty.
Marnie Duthie-Holt — Google review
Be careful, you'll get ripped off at happy hour. Happy hour must be explicitly mentioned; it is not possible afterwards. There is nothing on the sign saying that the happy hour must be explicitly mentioned and I have never experienced such an approach anywhere. When I read other comments, this trick is used more often and that's a SCAM for me!!! Maybe you should think about whether you want to support such places es a customer.
Markus Kais — Google review
At 20:30 there was a fire show followed by live music. A cozy evening and a great atmosphere

NicE place for drinks. Good live music when I was there. But every night has a different event. Chill place. Super super busy when I was there. So not bad. It's one of the better bars that open late here. Got pool tables and food. But the music was good, the band playing on open mic night was great. But again it gets busy and hectic. But over all good experience and definitely would come back... Cause there aren't too many choices here
Law Mak — Google review
It’s more about the atmosphere. The entertainment was really good, we went during karaoke night. The chicken and beef fajitas were okay nothing crazy, the calamari was hard/chewy wouldn’t get that again and the drinks were decent. If you go keep in mind the line gets long to get it because this place packs out and the service is a bit slow.

We had a fantastic dinner at Colores restaurant and beach lounge. We ordered Surf 'n' Turf and Lobster along with some delicious side dishes like salad, hand cut fries, and yuca balls with Mozzarella. The main courses were all superb, prepared with fresh ingredients that added to the overall exquisite taste. Don't miss out on trying their Greek appetizers such as Tzatziki and pita bread. The staff was incredibly attentive, friendly, and engaged throughout our visit.
Wow. Fantastic. I was over-impressed with this place. There were tables right on the beach with prompt service (almost never happens in Caribe Sur), beer came with cold glass, and a wine list. Yes, I said a wine list. Utensils were brought to the table along with hot sauce, napkins, etc. For lunch I had ceviche with patacones & a side of re-fried beans. The ceviche was served in two pearled half-shells, nice presentation. Water is served at the table with a glass without asking, which is great. Food was delicious. I'm excited to go back to try something else.

Highly recommend! Super friendly and kind family business. Delicious food - highly recommend the vegetable Casado platter. Great portions at very fair price. Our waitress was exceptional - even surprised us with an amazing, homemade dark chocolate brownie for my husband’s birthday! Unexpected and much appreciated.

5☆ across the board! Excellent wait staff, friendly, attentive, and trained to a high level. Absolutely gorgeous surroundings, right on the beach, under trees with lights strung above. The food was delishous and expertly prepared. This is a "not to miss dinner experience"! They moved us effortlessly, "inside" for dessert, when the rain stared.

Just a wonderful place!!! Super tasty fresh food, big dishes that you can also share. fair prices, amazing service! The owners and the staff are super nice!! We were staying for a month in Manzanillo and came to this restaurant EVERY DAY!! There are just super nice people! beautiful location just infront of the ocean. Overall amazing experience every time we came! Highly recommended!!!

Amazing seaside place with an impressive wine list for Costa Rican standards! We stopped here for lunch and had fish of the day (merlin) which tasted very very good. Service was extremely friendly and efficient. The ambience is fantastic with view of the Caribbean sea among the palm trees. Would recommend to eat here for a romantic dinner with great wine (they even have Sassicaia for their price)! Make the detour.

We had a perfect day on the beach across the street from the restaurant. The service is impeccable. They come over and take your drink order and are very attentive. They make sure to ask you if you want ice if they see It has melted in your drink. They actually brought me an ice bucket and left it at my little table by my lounge chair. When you are out of drink, they are right there to ask you if you would like something else. They are happy to run a tab for you so you don't have to pay each time they deliver a drink. When the sun started to go down, we moved from our lounge chairs to a dinner table a little further back, but we still had a gorgeous view of the beach/ocean. When it starts to get dark they turn on strands of lights that really adds to the ambiance. The food is absolutely superb! The cocktails were pretty awesome as well. The wait staff is super friendly and again, very attentive. This has been our favorite restaurant. We've been there twice now. In 6 weeks. We would have been there a lot more often, but we were staying over an hour away. We have decided that if we return to Costa Rica we will stay closer to Manzanillo. We met some new friends where we are staying and they went with us this last time and they really enjoyed it as well.

This is the best restaurant in the area! The food is amazingly delicious and meets very high standards. The atmosphere is great and the owners are friendly and welcoming. We visited twice, for lunch and dinner and would visit again and again if we stayed more.

Great dinner! We ordered Surf 'n' Turf and Lobster with some side dishes (salad, hand cut fries, yuca balls with Mozzarella) as main courses and were absolutely thrilled. They were all exquisite. Everything we ate was fresh and delicious. Try the Greek appetizers such as Tzatziki and pita bread as well. The staff was very attentive and friendly/engaged. Overall, we enjoyed our experience. For us it was one of the best restaurants on our trip through Costa Rica. We would love to visit again but it’s our last day here. I'd recommend it as a nice place to go with friends, family, or a partner. Many thanks to Niko, the owner and his team. All the best. Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ.

We made a 2 day trip out to Manzanillo. We came in for dinner on Friday and the dinner was tasty. Nikolas was pleasant and communicated well with us. We ended up going fishing the next day and caught some Red Snapper. I planned on cooking, but decided to ask Nikolas if they were open to cooking it for us with some sides. He happily agreed. See pic of the snappers. It was delicious. I would recommend and if I am near Manzanillo again, I will go back.

Cocoloba Café-Restaurante is a quaint eatery located near the beach, boasting a diverse menu that caters to both adults and children. Their ricenbeans with spicy prawns are particularly noteworthy, showcasing flavors reminiscent of Costa Rica. In addition to beer, they offer a variety of refreshing fruit drinks at reasonable prices. It serves as an ideal escape from the bustling beach scene on weekends, providing a relaxing ambiance accompanied by pleasant tunes and captivating views of the surf.
My boyfriend and I stayed near the area for about 3 months and went at least twice a week. We love the owners and their employees and they always made us feel like family when we’d come. The food was excellent and the fish tacos were our absolute favorite! Can’t find better Ceviche either ;) Looking forward to return this October!

Very small café/restaurant across the road from the beach, We basically took it over with six adults and four kids and had a surprising good mix of everything on the menu. I had the best ricenbeans with spicy prawns that I are in Costa Rica! They serve beer along with various fruit drinks and the prices are very reasonable for a place on the beach...

Nice spot to grab a bite and relax away from the chaos that is the beach on the weekends. Chill while listening to some sweet tunes and watch the surf across the road. Fruit (mango & banana) pancakes and a coffee are a nice Sunday combo. Bus stop just across the road. Friendly dog. Good Wi-Fi.

I’m sorry but this is not food people should eat. I watched them take frozen food and thaw it in the microwave. Nothing was fresh. Couldn’t even melt the cheese on a sandwich. If you’re going to feed people, at least try. Cafeteria food, at best.
