Cahuita

Cahuita is a village on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, near the border with Panama. It's a gateway to Cahuita National Park, which has coral reefs and the white-sand beach of Playa Blanca. The park’s rainforest shelters toucans, monkeys and turtles. The black-sand beach of Playa Negra, known for its strong waves, is north of the village. Farther north, the Sloth Sanctuary cares for injured and orphaned sloths.

Nature & Parks
Lush nature park featuring blue-water beaches, trails & numerous species of coral & animals.
100% guaranteed chance of seeing beautiful animals! Hike is nice and easy. At some points your feet/shoes are going to get wet. Beaches are the best and most beautiful with lots of shade. Don't bring food or cookies in plastic wrapping (put it in a Tupperware). Monkeys are sneaky and like to steal food, and we don't want that plastic ending up where it doesn't belong. Bags are thoroughly checked. Have fun!

This natural park is an adventurer's paradise! Despite the scorching heat, the extensive walking trails offer a thrilling and fun-filled experience. Immersed in breathtaking natural beauty, every step unveils new wonders: cascading waterfalls, vibrant flora, and captivating wildlife. The heat adds a sense of challenge, making the adventure even more rewarding. Remember to stay hydrated and be prepared for an unforgettable journey through this remarkable natural park.
Tree Flow — Google review
Great track with lot of animals to see and amazing beaches to explore. It took us nearly four hours to clear the route, as. We had kids aged 6 & 11, I felt it was a bit too long and demanding not having any snacks with us ( as they don’t want you to have any food with you). If you are exploring this park with the kids, find a way to smuggle some nuts or bars to avoid fainting in the sun in the way back 😂😂😂
Anastasia Lodhi — Google review
A beautiful place to explore, see wildlife and relax. Bring some beach towels and a picnic. A large portion of the trail follows the beach with so many areas for one to have a piece of paradise all to themselves. Be careful of the white-faced monkeys. They might get in your stuff. They’re curious and intelligent creatures. 🙈 🌞 🏝️
Dennis Mansfield — Google review
Don't have to pay to enter just need a mask. Free entry with recommended donations if you want to. Nice trail that goes for a while through the jungle. We saw some monkeys and sloths. Definitely a nice spot to stop by.
David Behbahani — Google review
Beautiful park with nice beaches throughout. Just give a donation to enter. Lots of wildlife to see: birds, lizards, iguanas, monkeys, raccoons. Be mindful the park closes early. Definitely worth a visit. Very easy trek to walk.
Harold C — Google review
Lovely walk through the beach and forest of Cahuita with some safe locations to swim. As a heads up, please check with park staff about snorkeling conditions because it is not always good visibility despite what the local "tour guides" tell you. We saw so many sloths, monkeys, spiders, snails, raccoons and much more. Pack a lunch and plan to have a day there!
Carrie Allsopp — Google review
Recommend getting a guide as it’s hard to spot a lot of the animals if you don’t know how to - we used Allan who was very knowledgeable about all the flora and fauna in the park, and also a great laugh! He was able to spot iguanas in the trees so far in the distance and used the telescope to show us them. Find him at the entrance of the park! Snorkelling is only available when there is good visibility so recommend going early in the morning (8am). We went around 9.30am and visibility started getting bad around 10.30am. We used King to take us on the boat who was great. He knew where all the large coral formations were and made sure everyone on the trip (6 people) did not touch or harm the coral. The trip was around 2 hours.

Beautiful national park with a great opportunity to do some proper hiking/walking. The beaches are stunning and the wildlife is vivid. Great experience overall. Would recommend visit this national park for sure!
Matthias Leba — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The park was awesome! We totally recommend everyone to check it out – so worth it! 🌳 You can spot tons of animals if you keep your eyes peeled. A tour guide isn't a must; you can explore on your own. Groups with guides are everywhere, and they'll point out the cool critters. 🦎 We even spotted a snake at the end – super exciting! 🐍 Saw around five sloths, about 15 monkeys, and at least 10-20 raccoons, plus a coati. Countless geckos and crabs too. 🐒🦀 No food or drinks for sale, so pack enough snacks. The walk can get pretty long, especially if you go for the extended 10 km tour. 🥪🥤 Highly recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Jason Deutzer — Google review
Very beautiful national park and among my top 2 in Costa Rica! I have seen the most sloths and monkeys here so far. Entrance fee at the entrance in the north East entrance is on a voluntary basis which is totally fair and not as exorbitant as in other national parks. Very beautiful stretches of beach which invite you to linger. It is best to arrive early as the beach closes at 3pm. At high tide, however, it may only be possible to walk the first 2.5 km

Cahuita is a nice and easy walk on established walking paths. It's like a little jungle along the shore. It is beautiful, lots of beautiful vegetation, and lots of wildlife. Enjoy a swim in the calm waters of the beach. Walk back along the beach. There's also a local restaurant at the entrance of the park.
Bernell King — Google review
We did a tour that included hiking and snorkeling. We got to see monkeys and sloths in the woods and lots of fish in the ocean. It’s impressive how they preserve nature and the reefs.
Chie Miyajima — Google review
Beautiful park with a 4km route that takes about 2 - 4hrs to complete. It depends how many times you stop on the way and pace of walk. There are lots of beautiful beaches in the second half of the trail. Would recommend avoiding when it’s rainy as it gets really muddy and the sea is not as turquoise.
ippolita magrone — Google review
Great place for a long nature walk. We went by ourselves, parking was real easy, cash only, they take dollars. We saw a sloth, monkeys, a viper, lots of hermit crabs. Binoculars are a must for sloths. Get there early, they start closing the middle of the trail at 2pm. It's a 5 mile trail from one entrance to the other side.
Hannah Perez — Google review
Beautiful national park. We got to see lots of monkeys, butterflies, birds, and can’t forget the sloths. The park is easy to get to and definitely worth your time and visit.
Juli Williams — Google review
Each day we saw different flora and fauna. Fabulous!!! Coati, monkeys, sloth, sleeping bats, raccoons, lizards… oh my! Good opportunity to make a donation when you are there and the guides are worth hiring for wonderful animal viewing.
Cheryl Traveler — Google review
Cahuita National Park is a pristine jewel where nature unfolds in its wildest beauty. What's truly remarkable is the free entry, inviting all to immerse themselves in this natural wonder. The well-maintained paths, complemented by seaside exits, guide visitors through a mesmerizing journey. As you tread along, keeping your eyes peeled rewards you with glimpses of the park's diverse wildlife. The untamed charm of Cahuita, from dense vegetation to the rhythmic crashing of waves, creates an enchanting atmosphere. It's a sanctuary where nature reigns supreme, and the opportunity to witness wildlife in its natural habitat is a gift. Cahuita National Park is a must-visit for those seeking an authentic and unspoiled connection with Costa Rica's untamed side.
Mihai Macarie — Google review
You don’t have to buy any entrance to the Park, you pay a donation and that’s it. Beautiful place, well maintained pathways and wildlife (raccoons, monkeys, sloths). You will find bathrooms at the entrance of the park, fresh water and places to seat under natural shadows at the beach or beside the pathways.
Luis Carlos Valerio Sánchez — Google review
Really beautiful experience however wildlife was harder to find than expected (except the monkeys). Got there right at 8am to the raised bridge entrance and was immediately met with your buses of loud people who talked loudly the whole way through. Made it hard to experience its serenity, but it’s not the parks fault. Recommend the beach on the south side for its calm waters and sandy bottom, Playa Blanca is was rougher and heavier in coral. Definitely worth the visit.
Eric Bronson — Google review
Had such an amazing time at Cahuita National Park. We hired a guide at the entrance, Richard was amazing, very knowledgeable. The paths were well maintained with lots of areas to sit and rest. No food or drinks for sale in the park, so pack a lot of snacks. You cannot bring single use plastic bags into the park. Able to swim in the park, but not able to snorkel. You are able to book a snorkeling tour though that takes you further out. We saw tons of wildlife including sloths (two toed), agootis, monkeys, lizards, snake, racoons, crabs, spiders, bats, butterflies and hawks.
Megan Giesbrecht — Google review
Took a tour to the park and whilst it was beautiful we were expecting a larger area and more wildlife. We were lucky enough to see one sloth up close, 2 far away, a snake and some monkeys high in the tree. A nice walk through the woods and the beach was beautiful and natural. Overall we were happy with the experience as we are glad that the animals are in their natural habitat and know that some days there are more or less animals around.

Situated in Playa Negra, Cahuita, this picturesque spot is ideal for a romantic date night while savoring an exquisite blend of flavors from around the world.
Wonderful location! Loved being able to watch the surfers during our meal. Accessible location. Food was good, my only complaint was the Greek salad lacked cucumber. The mint lemonade was amazing! Kids were able to play down at the tide pool while waiting for dinner.

Most of the food is just fine. They have Sushi on the menu. The rice they use is not good for Sushi. Don't get me wrong, this us a great restaurante!
L Kaul — Google review
I'm torn about this review because the menu offers a lot of amazing items, the view is spectacular, and the service was nice but not attentive. Twice, I had to walk inside to ask for things that should have been brought to the table or offered. The sushi was good. They really have a knack for tempura which is something many places here in Costa Rica get wrong. I had the 15 piece sushi combo. Delicious and enough to take home a few or dinner. My friend had the lomito with veggies and mashed potatoes. Meat was cooked well and she liked the veggies but said potatoes seemed like made from a box, which is unusual for the area. The place has great music, upscale decor, but then serves the meals with the cheapest silverware in the area. If there is one thing this place can do to raise the perception of the place is get decently weighted silverware. It doesn't sound like a big deal but it's really noticeable. Overall, I like the food and the view. I will return for another taste.

This is a beautiful spot to eat by the ocean in Playa Negra, Cahuita. It would be a nice date night spot. They have a world fusion menu with sushi, Korean flavors, Fresh fish, Steak, and some Middle Eastern delights. They also host live music sometimes. They recently did some renovations which makes it even nicer. I highly recommend J.J.'s Gin and Tonic.

Amazing food and good sushi. Our only big issue was how slow the service was. Our drinks basically came with the starters 15 minutes into dinner. Otherwise, if you're in Cahuita and looking for good sushi, look no further. Go for their combo of 30 pieces for two, and they'll adapt to whatever requests you have like they did for us! Just be prepared to wait on a busy night.

Playa Negra, located in the northwest area of Cahuita, is known for its dark volcanic sand. While Playa Blanca inside the National Park is popular for its white sandy beach, Playa Negra offers a different experience. The beach is long and ideal for spending a day with soft waves and perfect water temperature. There are almond trees providing shade and ample parking along the beach. It's not too crowded, making it great for swimming and observing fish in the water.
Just left the beach. It was great! The waves are not too big to swim in and the beach was not crowded. Parking is all along the beach so it was easy to find a space. We saw fish swimming around in the water as we were swimming around.

Coco's is a good place to hang out. It's one of the better cheaper places we ate at between Cahuita and Puerto Viejo and we went there 3 or 4 times for food and drinks. All the food we ate was good - ceviche, sopa de mariscos, casado, guacamole, chifroles... We mostly drank Pilsen but the smoothie I had was good too.
Emily Prior — Google review
The food was actually tasty, the drink not so much, and the waiter was very pleasant but didn't seem all that efficient. I asked for a Bochinche casado and a lemonade with mint and my girlfriend for a casado with fish. She didn't want the fish breaded so she asked how it was done. He told her it was marinated (escabeche) and she agreed. Well, she got it breaded. My casado came with pasta instead of rice as in the menu. When I asked him, he said there was an error in the menu. I asked him why didn't he tell me, he replied that traditionally the Bochinche comes with pasta. I'm not from here, I don't know how it traditionally is done. Anyway, he did bring some rice over but it was going to be too much and, besides, I didn't know he was going to do that so I had started on the pasta so I refused the rice. The lemonade was minty but not very lemony, more like diluted. All in all, ok but not great.
Pedro Silva — Google review
Food was good but service was very very slow even when it wasn't very full inside. The shrimp and rice came out well. Just stopped here waiting for a few friends but the food that we ordered took very long to arrive.

We stopped in for a quick bite after a long hike through the National Park. The service was polite and helpful, but there were some locals enjoying cocktails who were causing quite a sight. Yelling and dancing. They pretty much took over any chance of having a conversation during your meal. We were surprised that the staff didn’t ask them to be quiet and calm down. Once we ate, the food was good. The rice and beans has a little different flavor than what we’ve been eating, it was very good. We ordered the smashed plantains with guacamole. That was delicious!

If you’re looking for amazing food this is the place. Big portions & great atmosphere. We had a ribeye with homemade fries & Mar y Tierra (filet with shrimp.) Both were cooked really well but we preferred the filet. And don’t forget dessert - the creme brûlée was delicious. Wish we would’ve found this place sooner. This is the best restaurant in Cahuita. You get a variety of very delicious meals like steaks and/or pasta. The french fries are just perfect! I also loved the various wines they‘ve got. This was one of the most expensive places we ate in in Costa Rica. The food was good and it was a nice change from the local food, however it didn't live up to our expectations based on other reviews which was a shame. The reason we are giving 3 stars is because there were several other places in Cahuita that had nicer food and were cheaper.

Very nice place and personnel, but maybe I was poisoned here with the home made ice cream. I can't be sure, but all the evidence indicates it.

My favorite breakfast while in Cahuita

(Translated by Google) When I came out to the restaurant for breakfast around 8 a.m. in May in Cauita, this was the only place that was ready to welcome customers. Even places that say they open at 6 o'clock don't have an owner. Travelers in the same situation are gathered here without any choice. My companion ordered a breakfast set that included a plate of fruit, a glass of juice, a cup of coffee, two fried eggs, and toast for 3,500 colons. I ordered a tuna sandwich for 2000 colones and today's juice for 900 colones. Costa Rica, where food is poor, is expensive compared to Seoul. I always curse when I eat breakfast. I can't help but think like this! It's a meal that costs 7,000 won or 6,000 won, but it's not worth a single roll of seaweed. The service is also not good. I guess everyone is lazy because it’s hot. When I left, they suddenly included a 10% service charge. I complained about it not being notified in advance or written on the menu, but they just said it was ok. Why am I okay? I’m not okay?? There is no need to tip extra in Costa Rica. Everything is included. However, in these places, the employees do not include the service fee that the owner includes in the rate as labor, so it seems like they have to pay extra. Buy some food from the supermarket in advance and make a quick breakfast at your accommodation. It is much better both in quality and quantity. Pizza restaurant
Located near the Limon police station in Cahuita, Restaurante Pizzeria Cahuita offers a hand-made vegan Strozzapreti dish with vegan Pesto and nut parmesan. While not situated in Puerto Viejo, this seaside Italian restaurant is loved for its delicious pizzas, salads, and tiramisu. The enticing main entrees always catch the eye and stimulate the senses.
Friendly staff, amazing location (if there is room at the sea side and yes we were lucky) and good food.

Such a beautiful place to share a pizza and listen to the waves against the rocks and coral. They have plant based options on the menu, and we are the vegana pizza. Delicious!!

Authentic italian restaurant/food (italian owner), in garden terrasse with sea view. Loved the handmade pasta, red wine and desserts and for sure the best cappuccino in Cahuita. Quality food that has its price but I loved it. A bit of „Italianità“ in Costa Rica.

Try to book at table in the front that you can it with a view on the ocean. The pizza is amazing and the fish as well. A bit pricey but for this view it’s worth

Fresh, homemade pasta and great pizzas. We had the gnocchi, langoustine ravioli and pepperoni pizza. The staff was super friendly, mixed Italian and local staff. Make sure to book in advance so you can sit directly by the sea ✨ we were charged for one glass of wine too many so make sure to check your bill 💸

Beer and pizza combo! Lovely restaurant with an ocean view. I love anchovies. Great service and vibe. The staff seem to be happy working here. Clean dining area, clean restrooms.

I love this seaside Italian restaurant. I have only tried their pizzas, salads, and tiramisu. The main entrees always look and smell amazing. It is also a great place to enjoy a coffee and dessert in the afternoon. They have a beautiful deck very close to the ocean. I enjoy the primavera pizza. There are food options for everyone.

Daniel runs an incredible Italian restaurant here in Cahuita! His passion for his food is evident. We had the T-Bone (best steak in town) and the gluten free carbonara. Incredibly authentic carbonara if you know, you know. Prosciutto and Buffalo mozzarella incredible! Right on the beach. Owner is from Napoli and can seem stern but we like him a lot. I think he simply wants you to have a perfect Italian experience. Highly recommend.

I had tuna pizza and it was amazing. The dough and the ingredients were delicious! For dessert I had panna cotta with strawberries, which was also very nice. I just had to remove the leaves from the strawberries (whyever they didn't remove it in the kitchen..). The outdoor terrace has a very nice atmosphere and view on the ocean. I had luck and could just get a place but maybe you should reserve in advance to be sure. Of course don't forget to put or take mosquito spray. In case of rain they have also indoor tables, but I would recommend to go for the terrace and rather wait for nice weather if you want a special atmosphere/experience. For the pizza, the panna cotta and two beers I paid around 21.000 Colones / $42, which is not cheap and I wouldn't go there every day or weekend, but if you're around and you want to eat something delicious, I would definitely recommend to go for it.

To me, it was worth every penny I paid. The food was fantastic, staff soooo friendly and the view...WOW!! I'm here for another week, and I will be back. Grazi to an amazing staff for a great night out.

Had a great dinner with an excellent waiter (ashamed to say I can't remember his name but he is from Venice). We had our five kids with us which can be a handful but he was awesome! He even ran outside to bring us our leftovers box we forgot to grab. Food and wine was great, and loved the outdoor spot we had. Would highly recommend!

You don't expect excellent pizza in Costa Rica, but this place kills it. Proper thin crust pizza done Italian style with plenty of other great options. The dining area is gorgeous and the staff is super pleasant. Can't ask for more!

We went there 2 times during our stay in cahuita. The first time for lunch we had pizza. It was actually quite good and promising. So we decided to go there a second time to have dinner and try the homemade pasta and fish. the tuna tatar was ok, but not seasoned at all. the gnocchi were quite good. The cuttlefish/prawn kebaps were a catastrophe. Again not seasoned at all and instead of grilled like stated in the menu they were sprinkled with flour/breadcrumbs and very shortly fried at too low temperature. Therefore the cuttlefish was a soggy and tasteless mess. The prawns instead tasted horribly bitter which is a clear indicator that quality is not ok. I immediately sent them back. No apology from staff or kitchen. At least I did not have to pay for the kebaps. I have no idea what went wrong that evening but it was a huge dissapointment.

We were so excited for some good homemade pasta and were willing to pay the excessive prices for it, however we left quite disappointed. We had the ravioli and strozapretti with sausage, and while the pasta texture was good, both dishes were absolutely swimming in butter and cheese, and tasted of little else. The setting is beautiful, the staff are friendly, and the house wine wasn’t bad, however for such high prices, the pasta we had definitely wasn’t worth it sadly!
