Amanoyasukawara

Mentioned on
Religious destination
Amanoyasukawara is a Shinto shrine located inside a cave and marked by numerous stone piles. The shrine holds significant cultural and religious importance due to its association with Japanese mythology. Visitors can access the shrine via a riverside path and embark on an enjoyable hike through the scenic surroundings. This unique destination is considered a special power spot and features an expertly crafted road for easy accessibility, with free parking available at the main shrine.
This is a nice shrine with a pretty walk along the way. Worth visiting if you are in the area.

(Translated by Google) I asked my relative's aunt for a suggestion as a sightseeing spot. Somehow eight million gods held a meeting? It's a place, or the scenery is just like Sai-no-Kawara... (which one w) When you enter from the entrance, there is a shrine on your right, and when you pass through the shrine grounds, a private house suddenly appears. If you avoid the private house and go straight for about 100m, you can reach Amano Yasugawara. It's easier to understand with pictures than with words. It was the rainy season that day, and it rained on and off every day. Perhaps because of that, the amount of water was so high that I couldn't go to places where I would normally be able to cross. However, instead, I was healed by the refreshing sound of the flowing river water and the negative ions from the splashes. Where people gather, people's consciousness gathers, so there is no doubt that it is a power spot. If you go to Takachiho Gorge, we recommend that you stop by because it is relatively close.

There weren't a lot of parking spaces. It's a 10-minute walk from the parking lot. Just keep going straight past the washroom, follow the road, and down the slope to the ravine. The walk is very peaceful and beautiful.

Great shrine at the base of the river. Really a spiritual place, worth the trip! Everything from the surrounding nature to the cave shrine with all the stacked rocks. Definitely one of my favorite shrines I’ve been to in Japan.

Very interesting shrine inside a cave, connected to the Amaterasu Creation Story. It's a beautiful walk through a forest and next to a river. You can see the many stone stacks from previous visitors, and be impressed at some of the more precariously balanced ones. Very memorable experience, so be sure to stop by if you're in the area! I recommend parking at the shrine and walking over. If you collect goshuin, consider dropping your book off before and picking it up on your way back out.

It takes a while to get to this shrine. But the journey there leads you through a beautiful nature trail and the shrine in the cavern is quite magnificent. It’s also amazing how so many people have stacked stones around the shrine, the sheer quantity is astounding!

Wonderful walk to the shrine - a magical place with all the stacked stones. You need to enter from the path along the river from the Amanoiwato Shrine. I drove using Google Maps and end up at the wrong place.

An absolutely stunning shrine located within a cave at the end of a ravine. A stone path will lead you there. Beware, slippery when wet! Stunning nature, but also animals and bugs so beware if you’re allergic to bees or ants. Free entry. Can get busy as people come to pray at the altar. Be respectful of the place and the people.

Takachiho Gorge Footpath

Mentioned on
Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Takachiho Gorge Footpath is a stunning river canyon located in Miyazaki prefecture, offering breathtaking views of waterfalls cascading over sheer basalt cliffs. Visitors can rent boats to explore the gorge from the water or take a leisurely stroll along the paved path that runs alongside it. The area is particularly popular during autumn when Kyushu's vibrant colors are on display. Udo Shrine, dedicated to Japan's first emperor Jimmu, is also nearby and worth a visit.
The place is so beautiful and peaceful. You can rent a boat for ¥3,000 for half an hour but there is no one to row you so you have to row alone. You can walk through the canyon for almost its entire length. It has a restaurant and also delicious mango and orange ice cream. To walk around the whole park and have lunch will take you about four hours doing everything calmly. Important is a place worth going to if you are close by, it is not worth traveling far just to go to the canyon.
Andressa Chikazawa — Google review
Takachiho Gorge is a stunning natural wonder. The gorge's towering cliffs, lush greenery, and crystal-clear river create a picturesque landscape that leaves visitors in awe. Boat rides along the gorge offer an up-close view of its breathtaking beauty. It's a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photographers seeking to capture the essence of Japan's enchanting landscapes.

A beautiful display of nature. It is almost as picturesque as the photos. Parking was filled to the brim, and the boat rentals had increased prices since the last time I visited.
Jumi — Google review
The gorge is a beautiful site even from afar. Unfortunately, we were not able to view it from the footpath as it was closed for construction (this will probably be done next year). While we did want to take the boat ride, when we saw what we might see from a viewing point, we decided against it. Shots for you to make your decision below
Dannie B — Google review
Very far from any near stations. You will definitely have to take a 2 to 3 hour bus ride to get here, but the scenery is so beautiful. Not much to do in the near by village either so you are stuck for about a whole day. Driving there would probably be best
Cade Krasnicki — Google review
Came here by car, which seems like the best way to get here as the bus times are very limited. Parking is ¥500 for the day. If you don’t book tickets in advance for the boat there will be a 2 to 2.5 hour wait depending on how busy it is. It costs ¥3,000 for a boat and the an extra for ¥1,000 for each person you add on. There are very few shops nearby so bring plenty of water and snacks. Definitely worth a visit, just come prepared!
Alexis Busso — Google review
The place is beautiful! They recommend reserving for the boating activity in advance because lots of guests book it. It’s much better to appreciate the beauty of the place from the boats. There are restaurants and shops too. The restrooms were clean.
Nona — Google review
During my visit, the elevated water levels prevented the boat service, and riverbank access was restricted, limiting me to enjoying the view from above. Though I found it beautiful, it was somewhat smaller than my expectations. For transportation, I rented a bicycle from the bus terminal, which was very convenient, and the route to the iconic spot was easily reachable from the nearby parking lots with just a short walk.
Nene — Google review
Beautiful place with amazing scenery. For some reson the parking attended at the front pick and choose what cars can drive in and out. Some people ignored him and just drove up. We used the free car park down the road and walked up instead. Water fall was great and the park is peaceful. Worth the trip.
Niz Jay — Google review
Beautiful gorge! A great place to enjoy nature at its best. I would recommend making reservations beforehand for the boat ride, or else you would have to wait for at least 1-2 hours.
Quynh Huong Le — Google review
Unlike other tourist attractions in Kyushu that you can only take a look and leave, this place is much more fun as you can rent a boat and sail around with your friends, apart from just taking pictures of the stunning gorge. The queue for the boat rental is quite long so it's better to come before lunchtime so that you can grab some food first while waiting.
Victor Li — Google review
Visited in spring and it was gorgeous! We arrived early without any reservation and had no trouble getting a boat ride – luckily, it wasn’t too crowded. The short trek from the top leading to Takachiho Shrine was my favorite, and I highly recommend it. The view of the gorge and its unique rock formations from up there is simply beautiful. The entire area has a mystical and spiritual aura (it’s a popular ‘power spot’) as it is believed that the sun goddess Amaterasu once hid in a cave here. This place and the surrounding area truly stole the show during our Kyushu trip. I can’t recommend it enough.
Maria — Google review
We visited here on a rainy day. There were construction too so it was quite dangerous for rafting. The stream was also full of dirt too. The scenery overall was quite catchy and we could take some nice photos. If you plan to enjoy here it is much better to visit on a sunny day.
Alex Nguyen — Google review
Buy tickets in advance if you’re coming for the boats. For sure. No same day purchase. Parking available. Bus stations nearby if you’re taking public transport. Gorgeous place, full of stunning views and natural beauty. Beware if you’re allergic to bees or ants. Eki stamp available at one of the souvenir shops by the fish pond. Restrooms available. Please don’t leave trash behind. Beware some paths are blocked for your on safety as they undergo maintenance.

The place is absolutely gorgeous. The boats filled with amateurs like me can be a little haphazard in the gorge 🤭. Cost Y5100 to rent for 30mins. Boat allows up to 3 persons. If possible, book online at least 3 days before your planned trip. We were lucky to get a boat immediately because we were there at 9am.

Nagomi is a minimalist dining room in Kyushu that offers a sublime experience of tasting the famed Miyazaki beef, including various cuts of Takachiho beef grilled at the table. The restaurant has friendly staff who speak some English and an English menu for tourists. Despite having only six tables, each seating four people, Nagomi is well-run and offers excellent beef options, including A5 Miyazaki Wagyu.
The Mog Champ sends his regards. Nagomi was a great place to stop by for lunch considering my long journey from Kumamoto city to visit Takachiho Gorge! I wanted something delicious and found that Miyazaki Beef could also be eaten here too! The restaurant is very spacious and there was no waiting time at all. The menu is simple and easy to select from, the service is easy and fast. The staff are friendly and quick! Once they serve you your food, you get to decide how you'd like it cook since they give you small round heated iron pan so you can have your meat rare, medium rare, well-done whatever you call it! It was amazingly delicious and filling, I think I ate my food a bit too slowly since the iron pan ran out of heat before I could grill my last two slices! But they're kind enough to provide me another one freshly heated which was good! For anyone visiting Takachiho Gorge, this is one place you have to stop at to have food! Thanks for the service and food Nagomi. I enjoyed it a lot! Mogliest Regards, Your Mog Champ

Sirloin Steak served on sizzling iron plate. Full set with rice (free refill), miso soup, salad, appetizers, dessert & one drink. Some of the sets are sold out at the beginning dinner time. There're only a few staff members who served on the restaurant, so that you're waiting for them to order something. I ordered a refill rice, but the waitress/waiter is very busy, so I finally waited for a few minutes to get a rice, but the beef is already cool down.

When you are touring Kyushu, you have to visit the beautiful Takachiho Gouge. And the trip will not be complete without tasting the famed Miyazaki beef at Nagomi. And it was sublime. Not to mention that the prices are much more reasonable here compared to the yakiniku restaurants in Tokyo.
Gregory Chang — Google review
Had the sirloin 200g. Delicious. Only criticism is the little hotplate/stone loses heat very quickly meaning you have to repeat requests for replacements to cook your steak. Unlimited rice refills for certain sets!

Tourist friendly. Write your name and number of guests down. Wait until a waiter/waitress brings you to your table. You can choose from a set menu or from ala carte. Beef (whatever your choice of cuts) arrives in a hot plate rare and you do the rest of the cooking in the hot stone provided. Good beef 👍🏻
Ben Chuah — Google review
Love the amazing steak here that's done so amazingly well. We had different cuts, and they were served with delicious side dishes. The meat came cooked to rare, but you can use the hot stone provided to cook it to the doneness of your liking.

It's a medium sized, well ran restaurant. Whatever you order, you will not be disappointed. That said, do try the Miyazaki Wagyu 😋, goes well with ginger ale.

If you want to try the highest end melt in your mouth marbled beef from the area this is a place to do it. I went for lunch and did not have much space for dinner afterwards. We had the do-it-yourself BBQ which was lovely as you can watch the fat melt in front of your eyes while the beef gets to the perfect temperature.
P. S. — Google review
Excellent beef but the decor is austere and it is like eating in a family restaurant. Also because the beef is so good it really needs to be eaten while drinking red wine, which sadly is not available. There is limited seating so best to book in advance. But worth going for the beef.
GMT — Google review
Excellent beef. We came for lunch and only had to wait about 10 minutes for a seat at one of the BBQ. As a table we ordered steak and some to BBQ, so got to try a bit of everything. Have to say that it was all excellent, and I would definitely come back if I was in the area. Staff is very friendly, and speaks some English as well, which is helpful for tourists. Menu is in English too.

Restaurant Chiho-no-ie is a popular spot located at the entrance of Takachiho Gorge, offering a wide selection of Takachiho souvenirs. The cafe, Manai, serves delicious Takachiho beef burgers and allows visitors to enjoy catching noodles as they flow along a bamboo stream. The restaurant offers Miyazaki wagyu beef and river trout set meals that are highly recommended.
Had my very first flowing water noodle experience at this restaurant, and it was every bit as cool as it sounds. Located right next to the stunning Takachiho Gorge, it's the perfect spot to unwind after a bit of exploring. The restaurant seems to be a hit with visitors, given the signs instructing how to queue up. I swung by post-lunch rush at around 2:30 pm, which turned out to be perfect timing as it wasn't too crowded. The menu was straightforward, offering the option of ordering items separately or going for a set at 1500 yen, which most patrons, myself included, opted for. The set included the unique noodle experience, a beautifully grilled fish, and a rice ball. The whole concept of catching your noodles as they flow by in water is not just fun but also ensures that you're the only one touching your food - great for hygiene. And don't worry about your noodle-catching skills; any escapees are collected and served to you at the end, so nothing goes to waste. The noodles themselves were simple yet delicious, making for a light, satisfying meal. All in all, it's a 5-star experience for me. The combination of a unique dining adventure, tasty food, and the beautiful setting by the gorge makes this a must-visit spot.

Have the somen and rainbow trout set! So much fun catching the somen when it flows down the bamboo. Don’t worry if you miss them as the staff have a basket at the end to catch the noodles for you!

Their cold soba was refreshing after the long trek. However, I felt the fish was a tad salty. The warm sake went well with the food and it appeared that they diluted it with water.
Natalie Chen — Google review
The fish was still raw inside but taste is ok. Must try ‘’nagashi somen’’, interesting experience.
Peiyu — Google review
We had the Miyazaki wagyu beef and river trout (yamame) set meals and it was delicious. The service was excellent as well. The restaurant is quite easy to find as it is located at the junction to the entrance of Takachiho Gorge, with public parking next door.

Patronised on a weekday as lunch is included in the tour. It was served in a set menu - grilled fish (yamame) set, costs ¥1850. The food was average, very generous portion, and so very filling.
Pei — Google review
Came for a late lunch at 2pm and place was empty as one could expect. Service was pretty poor which matched the quality of the food. Ordered the chicken Nanba set 1300 yen and Nanba set with fish 1700 yen and the quality and quantity was poor as well. The chicken was a oily poorly fried dish (tasted ok just so oily) Size was small for the amount, we ended up leaving to eat again.
Boss — Google review
It’s touristy, so manage your expectations accordingly. It was fun trying to catch the noodles as it flows along the bamboo ‘stream’. It probably comes out in 3 batches per order. So meaning each person gets about 3 tries to pick your noodles. The remaining / ‘uncaught’ noodles will be brought to you in a separate basket. I went around 2pm+ and had to wait for about 15 mins as the restaurant was busy. You can order the noodles as is (not enough for a meal) but they do come along in a set meal with a choice of vegetables (steamed pumpkin, konnyaku, rice ball, salad, tofu etc) or grilled fish (very salty). We also tried the beef udon and it was tasty.

(Translated by Google) Mr. Hatsue of Takachiho has been thinking about going for the past few years. I was finally able to visit. When I looked at the navigation system, it looked like the side facing the street was not open, so I was momentarily disappointed, but the side facing the alley is the entrance to the store. I was told that there was only a mini steak set meal for 2,750 yen and a yakiniku set meal for 1,400 yen, so I ordered the mini steak set meal without hesitation. Three thick chunks of meat came out. There was a fair bit of marbling in it, but when I ate it, it wasn't greasy at all, and the meat was delicious and full of flavor! Since I grill it myself, I tried various degrees of doneness: rare, medium-rare, and medium, and even when it was cooked, it remained soft and delicious! They brought out a steak plate for me, so I enjoyed watching how it cooked, cutting it with a knife, and returning it to the grill over and over again. It was so delicious that I couldn't help but order a second helping of rice and ate it all. However, it was not the mustard soy sauce sauce that others had written, but the regular yakiniku sauce. But this sauce is also really delicious. When I was eating alone at the counter, the proprietress talked to me about various things and I was able to have a good time. The steak set meal was a bit luxurious for lunch, but it was worth more than the price.
