Gijon

Gijón is a large coastal city in northern Spain. It’s known for its maritime heritage and the old fishermen’s quarter of Cimadevilla. Santa Catalina hill has a clifftop park and sculpture. The 18th-century Revillagigedo Palace houses an international arts center. It adjoins the Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista, now a concert hall. Nearby is the 16th-century Clock Tower, with a museum about the city.

San Lorenzo beach is a nice, secluded beach located in the heart of the city of Gijon. It has a promenade that leads to city amenities, making it perfect for swimming, sunbathing and enjoying some good old-fashioned fun in the sand.
Super 💕❤️
Hari Tabucija — Google review
Looks like a great beach. The weather wasn't great on my visit so I can't comment on the sea temperature and the swimming capabilities but it was clean and tidy.
Tom Banks — Google review
Beautiful beach! It isn't too overrun. The water was 20 degrees in June. So the swim was nice. A lot of people surf here as there is always wind. There aren't a lot of facilities around for toilets or changing, maybe one. I love this beach. 😀 it's nice and natural, no commercial shops on the beach trying to sell you things. It's just simple, and that's what makes it beautiful 😍
Canuk Travels — Google review
Nice large beach close to pretty much everything. Sand is clean and great for kids to play in.
David Woutersen — Google review
One of my best and favourites beaches in Spain 🇪🇸 Asturias
Alberto Martínez — Google review
The beach is a five star. Clean, nice and shallow. Great for playing and swimming. Great sand. Great beach walk. Few good coffee places and even worse parking facilities and the ones that exists are really small and not up to date. Also no dogs allowed regardless the hours. Would be fair to allow dogs early in the mornings, say until 9:00. There are no one there that early anyways. Dogs allowed between October and April.
Michael Tomaro — Google review
I heard that St. Lorenzo Beach in Gijon is the busiest beach in Asturias and I am guessing is on summer time. The beach is really long and beautiful with golden sand and high waves. You can see many people playing sand sports, specially surfing since early morning every day from all the surf schools along the boulevard. It is amazing and very relaxing!!
Maria E Fernandez — Google review
Big beautiful beach with a long promenade. This is the coolest place in Gijón and is a must visit when in town 😎
Brendan DS — Google review
Hardish packed, extremely wide and good length, when tide out, great wildlife and good for jogging! Better than most tropical beaches I've seen and together with Cadiz beaches , the best beach in Spain . Very central. In winter , hundreds of dogs play with owners in afternoon 😍
Alex — Google review
An iconic place of Gijon. A gorgeous large beach with lovely sand. Plenty of restaurants and shops near by. In summer gets crowded. It's 1.5 km long.

Specialty Museums
The Museum of the Asturian People is a museum dedicated to Asturian culture and history. It has a variety of exhibits including authentic asturian bagpipes, horreos: traditional homes on stilts, and artifacts from all aspects of historic Asturian life. It is a great place to disconnect and learn about Asturian culture and curiosities. Additionally, picnic tables are available for visitors to enjoy their time here.
A very interesting museum with old buildings and objects from the past. It gave a real sense of how tough rural life was. It was reminiscent of St Fagan's Museum in Wales on a much smaller scale. An excellent exhibition of bagpipes, from around the world, as well as Asturias. The staff were helpful and friendly. Even better, it was all free.

Very interesting muséum. Deserve to spent few hours to learn about asturian people life in the past

A fascinating museum if you like history and design or engineering. The facilities were also well kept. The museum is free and the receptionist knew enough english to help and answer questions.

Highly recommend! We visit this museum on Sunday, the entrance was free. In the yard there was some event with dancing. Amazing exposition.

Very decent. Having that it is an open museum, it was really a calm visit whilst the place quite displays the authenticity of the Asturian live hood until 19th century. Also having this for free was really surprising.

Lovely museum of the Asturian folk. Contains an open-air element with traditional cidreria, characteristic granaries and cottages. Well worth a visit.

Love the traditional buildings and the cider press was seriously impressive. Free to go in. Weirdly interesting building. National bagpipe collection is worth a look. Also some interesting basketry.

Gardens
The Atlántico Botanical Garden in Gijón is a large and beautiful garden that showcases plants from Spain's north coast and Atlantic regions. It has a museum as well, which is especially interesting if you're interested in natural history. The gardens are very peaceful and relaxing, making it a great place to spend an afternoon if you have an interest in nature. It's also very inexpensive, making it a great option for budget-minded travelers.
This place is not just beautiful but also very informative, even though I didn't read all the info because it has an immense variety of plants. This is a must go place if you encounter yourself around Gijón.
Johanna Martínez Burgos — Google review
Enormous and beautiful botanical garden. We spent 4+ hours inside and couldn't see it all! Definitely worth a morning or afternoon.
Chris Dulya — Google review
Great place for the nature lovers out there! There's an entrance fee of €2.90, but I was told that you could leave and come back. You also need approximately 2.5 hours to see the whole place.
Geisha Esmenda — Google review
Interesting but neglected. There were many lights and buttons turned off or not working inside different buildings with exhibits. Some plant signs were illegible or still standing where a plant has long been dead, or positioned so far from the path that you can't read them. Some were also inaccurate: for example, the sign for Syzygium jambos was in front of Syzygium smithii. The maze was interesting but you can see through the hedge walls. The whole place needs a bit of TLC (tender loving care), that's all. 1 star given for all the things that could be easily fixed. But we still had a good time because they have a lot of different plants! And it is inexpensive. You could spend several hours here if you're really into plants!
David D — Google review
A very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon if you have an interest in nature. Lots of different habitats and terrains. Very inexpensive too.
Tom Foyle — Google review
Gf took me there to explore and have some time together. It was a very quiet day and we almost had the whole garden to ourselves. It is a good spot for family to go to. There is a maze in the garden. If you have the time to spare, go explore it with loved one.
Gefei Jia — Google review
Just make sure you don’t get lost even with a map, but worth it. Some magnificent trees
Richard Pook — Google review
Lovely place to have a walk around, it's a natural kind of garden with each area themed. There's a fun dragon slide for kids too. Take a picnic and spend a day. We were also told that we could come back with our ticket the same day and it was open til 9pm. Very cheap to get in too, kids under 12 are free and we paid £5 for both of us, two adults. The maze is fun too.
Natalie Fahy — Google review
Definitely worth the visit!! We had one day at Gijon and we're doubting if we should visit the gardens but it was a highlight of the day. If you like nature, go! It's quite big but going around feels like a natural amusement park. We enjoyed every step of it and the entrance was cheap for 2.90€. To enjoy it better bring some snacks (there are drinkable water fountains around) and spend a whole afternoon chill and have a picnic in the gardens. They close at 18.00 We spent about 3 hours and if we weren't hungry we would have stayed an hour more for sure.
Overwhere Project — Google review
Very interesting you wander through them various types of habitat and see what is grown there. Some very pretty flowers and views including of the university beside the gardens. Pity there are only drinks from machines rather than a good cafe.
Denis Parker — Google review
A short trip out of Gijon We came here on a sunny day in March looking for a bit of spring. While there were precious few flowers, the range of plants and the great amount of information made the trip worthwhile. They have quite a variety of habitats, and with explanations in both Spanish and English I was able to increase my Spanish vocabulary quite rapidly :) The garden is a decent size, you can cover it in about 90 minutes if you don't stop much. If you like plants it is worth a trip. There is no cafe.
Hari Tahil — Google review
Good afternoon. We are delighted. I'll start with the fact that my wife had a wound. And at the entrance, at the cash desk, we got a pharmacy suitcase and helped to process and seal it in order to walk quietly. This is very humane and hospitable of you. Now the garden closes at 6 pm, and although we did not have time to see the whole garden (we started at 4.30 pm), we were very pleased. A lot of rare plants, interesting routes, rich interactives in buildings, a lot of decorations - everything to have fun! We will definitely come back and finish our walk. Thank you very much!
Dmitry Vistorobsky — Google review
I've been living here for a while now, and it was surprisingly the first time that I've been able to make it! It's a cheap way to spend the day (we didn't even see anything and we were there for over two hours!) We brought lunch and ate at a picnic bench! There's also a cafe to grab some food or drinks as well. I was soo pleasently surprised to see how CLEAN and fully stocked all the bathrooms were. It was way bigger than I thought it would be, and it was beautiful!! There's only a couple reasons why I wouldn't give it 5 stars: 1) while there are ramps, I could imagine it being quite an effort to get around if you're in a wheelchair due to various steep inclines and very uneven ground 2) alot of things seemed super dry and dying. I understand that it's the summer, but if it's a botanical garden, you would think that the upkeep would be a little bit better. 3) a lot of their features are water features/fountains and flowing water. Every single water feature that we passed was turned off or empty. A little disappointing considering it could have made the experience more enjoyable! I was able to take many pictures, so I will upload a few of them now

The Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura is an amazing cultural center with a grand plaza that is perfect for hosting events. It's also home to the Offspring play, which was fantastic. The architecture and space are extraordinary, and it would be perfect for any type of performance or exhibition.
Hicimos la visita guiada y ha sido una gran experiencia. Auga is a seafood-focused restaurant located in a light and airy space overlooking the harbor. The chefs, Gonzalo Paneda and Antonio Perez are one of the most emblematic culinary teams from Asturias, Spain and they specialize in Mediterranean cuisine with a contemporary European flair. The decor is simple but elegant, with dark browns and whites blending together to create an spacious feel.

The food was great, interesting textures and good produce. The service was ok, we had the short menu but no dish was explained in detail when it was brought. I had to ask the staff several times what I was eating. The attention was correct but a bit dry, specially considering at this price point. Service should be much better and warmer.

Tapas bar
If you're looking for a tasty and traditional meal in Gijón, head to Restaurante Asturiano La Galana. Serving up fabada beans stew, regional ciders and delicious tapas, this spot is perfect for visitors of all ages. While prices start at 9 euros for the fabada bean stew, 6 euros for chorizo and 15-20 euros for tapas, it's definitely worth checking out La Galana - you won't regret it!
Really inventive food and fabulous service by a very amusing and attentive waiter. The cider is great and refreshing too. I’d love to know why they pour it from high
Deggsie ?Deggs? Degs — Google review
Absolutely. Amazing. Fabada is served for 3/4 people (But I ate the whole thing) Plus starter plates. Food quality and taste was superb quality. - Cornbread toasts with local Asturian toppings including blood sausage (its superb, ridiculous flavour) - Fabada - Bean stew with sausage blood and chorizo, best thing you'll eat in the region if done properly. - Cold cuts board with cheese and grilled vegetables. Brilliant service, good wine, good aperitif (Vermouth) And local cider pouring in the splashing shields (A real spectacle to watch and enjoy) Fantastic, TRULY, fantastic meal. Thank you. Go here.

Place with good potential: location next to the city hall, very authentic inside, tasty cider. But ... they totally lack of stuff. We were waiting our food ( and it was not main dishes, it was just some hot starters) around one hour. Another thing to mention is that they served us bread without asking and then it was included to the bill.

What a find great place mainly a sea food menu but a great choice of meats. Staff superb and the price is normal.
Richard Fox — Google review
Wow the people overhere don’t even run, they fly. They work so hard to give everyone the best experience. Was told beforehand we had to wait for like 40 minutes at the bar (which we agreed to, because we were able to have a cider here). Ended up just being 15 minutes of waiting before a table was ready. However a reservation is recommended. They really keep a good eye on your glass and refill the cider every time it is almost empty. The food was delicious. To be honest I am vegetarian and made an exception at this restaurant as it looked too good. The truffle tuna carpaccio, I mean……. DELICIOUS. Haha on the picture you can see I couldn’t resit to take a bite already. And the location is great. You can sit inside and outside. It is located at a cute square near the port.
Fleur Van Aalst — Google review
Local restaurant in the center of Gijón. Tasty tapas and sidra (a must if visiting Asturias). It gets very crowded at nights, but after waiting a litlle bit, you will get a table!
mariona — Google review
Good choice for the tapas like Cabrales Cheese or hake fish balls in a clam sauce. The best are the waiters who serve you cider or food and the friendly clients. Thank you to Eladio for choosing the excellent red wine, La Planta from Ribera del Duero & for attending to us.
Mark Auchincloss — Google review
The location is great, food and cider are good, service is really pretty horrible, and spotty. Yes, they're busy, but since they seemed to ignore us, and pay attention to the groups of 4, the service is really terrible, and I did not have a good experience. To9 bad...
eve m — Google review
Rude staff. On multiple occasions we were completely ignored at the bar or it took forever before someone noticed us. Even after setting a reservation, quite frankly on a pretty slow night, we waited long to be seated and even longer before our orders were taken. To top it all off, after we ordered my husband and I were asked to LEAVE because our orders were not “sufficient” enough to justify a seat at their table. WILL NOT BE RETURNING.

Excellent restaurant. The price is very good for the food. One of the tunas that I had.
Alexandre Swioklo — Google review
Sadly, I could not give a zero to this restaurant. Website showed this restaurant was opened today. We arrived only to be very rudely greeted and turned away. ‘We aren’t opened yet and what’s more we are fully booked today’. Your rudeness was someone else’s gain. Don’t bother with this restaurant, it costs nothing to be polite but an awful lot of energy to be so rude.
Juliana Jacobs — Google review
Amazing service and very good quality food at reasonable prices for what you get. One of the best in town. I am not giving it 5 stars because all of our dishes were heavy on the salt. It seemed that excess salt was a recurring theme. I am sure that this is not normally the case as most reviews are stellar. I will definitely try again.
Miguel Martinez — Google review
One of the best meals we had during our stay in Asturias. Excellent seafood, beautifully prepared, and very efficient service. The setting is lovely too. The chef/owner spent time with all the diners, and overall it was a very pleasant experience. We had our young daughter with us, and the staff were very accommodating. It’s probably not an ideal setting for young children, but she also loved the food and enjoyed making a picture for the chef. Highly recommended!

Good place with unforgettable desserts (tarta de almendra caliente) the chocolate dessert was ok but not as good. Manzana con foie delicious!! Minus one star for bacalao (wasn’t that good), salad, and service (inexperienced waiter)

We visited V. Crespo restaurant in June 2022 with some members of my family. It was late in the night but they received us. I would highly recommend this restaurant without a doubt!

Exceptional food and service. Lobster rice is the best. Excellent red wine, bottle shown here.
H Giap — Google review
We were served in 45 minutes from the time we sat down, 9:15pm reservation. The salpicon de bogavantes and croquetas were served at the same time. By the time we had the croquetas they were cold. We had to ask for the plates to be changed to have the croquetas. Wine was never served during dinner, meanwhile, two waiters were standing around. Water was not refilled and we were never asked if we needed more water. The fish we ordered came out 5 minutes after the appetizers (croquetas and salpicon). We noticed that a table of about 10 people arrived 30 minutes after we did. It appears they wanted us to finish quickly to attend to that larger table. We felt completely ignored, unattended, and disrespected. The Michelin recommendation is completely overrated. We noticed the manager (a gentleman) attending the larger table, giving them his complete attention and even having conversations with them. It appears they know some of the people in the larger table. The tables next were also serving their own wine. For this caliber restaurant, it is unacceptable. We live in Spain 6 months of the year and we know that eating in 45 minutes is unacceptable and insulting. We were tsken for granted. We would have preferred for our reservation to be cancelled if they knew they could not provide the service that a Michelin recommended restaurant should deliver. When we spoke to the gentleman, he agreed. This shows that they know this is an ongoing issue and by continuing to make the same mistakes, it is a disrespect to the clients. We visit Gijon many times a year and this is the first time we have had this experience at this caliber of restaurant in the city and surrounding areas. Actually, for the amount of food we were served, not even in a cafeteria type restaurant in Spain we have had this experience. Thank you.

The cider bar Sidrería Tierra Astur Poniente is a popular place in Gijón with regards to food and drink. It offers different types of dishes, including meat, seafood and veg., as well as desserts. There are also five pubs all over the Principado that serve great drinks and good food at very reasonable prices.
Really good restaurant to try a lot of different typical Asturian dishes, at good prices for the quality and amount of food. You can also try sidra here. It was really better than some other sidrerías around the city we tried out. We would recommend to book in advance, but even if the online/phone bookings limit was reached, you can probably eat here if you go early or don’t mind waiting a bit. The place was designed and decorated with lots of charm. The staff was super kind. We will come back.

One of the best experiences we had at Gijón, the staff is incredibly kind and helpful, the drinks keep on flowing and they're really cheap (3.5€ for a bottle of cider), the food tastes great and it's welcoming, just be aware that the portions are huge so make sure you don't order too much

Excellent service from all waiters, notably Leo P who attended us, also a passing waiter who see me trying to serve the fish course and kindly offered to help.Generally a much better service than 2 years ago when some waiters seemed impatient and disinterested. The food too was top class, absolutely delicious. We'll be back

Must visit. Very big portions and stuff is friendly. Not expensive considering how big the portions are. I think it was the best restaurant in Gijón in terms considering the authenticity and the quality.

You can taste the whole menu from top to bottom. It tastes very good. The portions are very large, but everything is great. There is enough staff and the waiters and waitresses are always attentive. An always busy restaurant that I can recommend.

As always, the food was excellent, the portions are huge and so local atmosphere. The only downside was the maitre not helpful about the portions and the quantity of food we need to request. At the end of the meal we have so much leftovers. We were the table 301.

The restaurant was a recommendation from the hotel staff. You can get dinner at 08:00 pm. It's best to get a Sidra in the bar area before having dinner. They have a great variety of dishes. It's best to share as the portions are enormous. The food is really delicious and fresh. We really loved the chicken with cheese and the sea food.

Wow, this place was a great surprise! It looks like a very rustic sidreria, the decoration is really cool. Then they even have stalls where they serve local cheese and embutidos at the front and local products, which was a great idea! We went for lunch around 1 pm without booking in advance and we found a table right away. We had some Mushrooms as an entrée, but it was definitely too much because the fish I ordered was HUGE! I had pescado a la parrilla and it was excellent! The bread was local and very good too, as well as the red wine I had. Sadly no room for dessert. I loved this place, I'll go back for sure.

I came here to try their "Cachopo" and it was a great choice, it was really tasty, with cheese and beef meat from Asturias. Customer service was warm and friendly. I highly recommend this place.

Great restaurant experience. Friendly and ample staff -except at the door where they are kept very busy- which is friendly and offer advice for a better experience. Best idea is to call ahead for reservations because this place is extremely popular. Expect half hour waits without a reservation. Food is very tasty here for an American pallette unlike most places. The area and restaurant are known for their cider. Cider contains 6.5% alcohol by volume and is poured PER DRINK. The pour is performed by the staff by holding the bottle high above their heads and pouring the drink into your glass which is typically held below their waist. Important: the drink must be drunk immediately after being handed to you as the cider will lose its taste within ..... two or three seconds after being poured. Staff will then keep walking by and serving up the consequent pours until your bottle is empty. Buckets are used to reduce spillage during the pour and at other times the pour is made directly over the floor which is covered with what seemed like some form of saw dust or chips. Menu is very ample and meals can be had for under €10, €15, and €25-€35. I was in town for one day and the restaurant was the highlight of my day. MUST VISIT!
