Our second visit to Vindolanda did not disappoint. Came to see in better weather as last time a few years back was October and raining. The museum is fantastic. The tour guide Alex was brilliant, very clear, concise and a great sense of humour.

Excellent site. Informative tour guides. You can watch the team excavating the site. Brilliant museum and cafe on site. Definitely worth a visit. Will probably go back again as there was so much to try and take in.

Amazing day out with the kids and very educational, displays laid out to help with ruins of the buildings. The museum is also definitely worth a visit.

Incredible History. What an amazing place to visit. Being able to walk around these ancient ruins is a brilliant experience, but to then see what the archaeologists have dug up in the museum is just stunning; leather shoes, letters, weapons etc. This is so worth a visit.

A wonderful archaeological dig site on a Roman military fortress and the village that grew up immediately outside its gates. There is so much of interest to see here, including the reconstruction of both a wooden and a stone watch tower, a small temple and the superb museum, where so many of the finds are displayed.

Managed to attend a guided tour and really enjoyed it. Well worth a visit , the museum was particularly of interest to me, and the canteen provided some welcome refreshments in a lovely garden .

An amazing place to visit if you have any interest in Roman history and the Roman rule of Britain. Good facilities, the cafe was nice, the museum was excellent and the displays were well done. The site itself is a must see. Very quiet in February during the week.

Excellent! Well worth the visit Take your time wandering the ruins. Head down the hill to the cafe and outstanding museum. Very informative, loads of seating to rest/listen & nice facilities. If you have a disabilty or difficulty walking for 1600 meters or cannot walk uphill for long periods of time (although there is some seating for rest along the way), ask the museum staff where you can pick up your passenger or park close to the museum entrance. Great visit!! Pictures I have taken do not properly serve this wonderful site.

Nice visit to a very historical site, a great place to wander around for all ages. Very informative and interesting Museum full of Roman artifacts from the site. Toilets and a cafe on site. Admission fee 10% discount for English Heritage members. Three car parks on site, they probably fill quickly in summer. Quite a narrow and steep lane to access location, so be prepared.

I recommend one listens to podcasts, or reads up on the place before visiting. That will give you a better appreciation of the awesome archaeological work in progress that it is. Easy to get to by bus. Great volunteer guide presentation. Grownups, allow 5 hours. It would be horrible to have to rush though all the things that there are to see and do.

We visited on a Sunday in mid-June. It was easy to find and car parking was easy because it was quiet on our arrival at 11am. We pre-booked tickets as we thought that we would visit this site and the Roman Museum. We thought that it was a little bit expensive until we moved away from the archaeological site and experienced the indoor and outdoor museums. These really helped explain the dig site and made it a day to remember. We had lunch at the cafe. Very nice people gave us very nice food 😊 Not sure that we felt short-changed by not visiting the Roman museum on the second-half of our ticket.

Utterly astounding. The ruins of Vindolanda are incredible and this is only a small fraction of what was actually there. The museum has some incredible artifacts on display that give a genuine human connection to the people who lived at Vindolanda. If you have an interest in history this is a must see.

Our second visit to Vindolanda, I find it fascinating on how advanced the Romans were. I would advise purchasing the guide book, there are several centuries of occupation on this site and this can make it difficult to interprate, when looking at the remains. There was a live archeology dig at the time of our visit, there are also two living archeology experiments on going in terms of an example of recreated mile castle and wall, both in timber and stone, the museum is breathtaking in terms of finds and their preservation. Well worth a visit.

This is a great place for something different and to learn some history. The ruins are presented wonderfully with signposts telling you what different areas were used as and even audio posts telling you history. The museum is more extensive than I expected. It was quiet when we visited and we had a great day out.

Always loved history at school, so this was a no brainer. What a historical site, plenty to see, ruins, artifacts & a tour guide if needed. Had a wonderful day of history. Would definitely recommend for all the family.

Very interesting remains of a Roman settlement. So much more to see here than I imagined. The ruins have informative signage indicating what were the homes, baths, latrines, tavern, military buildings and granaries etc. There is a wonderful museum exhibiting the finds from the site and a lovely cafe. Well worth visiting.

A beautiful experience ! The guide was very informative and explained the site so well, that you could imagine what it would have been like all those years ago. Even without the guides and array of different tours you can hop in and out of, the site is well looked after and fun to look around. Definitely for kids and adults alike, it has something for everyone here. Because footfall was not heavy in October, it was very peaceful. The mini museum is such a bonus, and the cafe at the back has the most awesome decor in the style of ancient Roman times. Loved it !

What an amazing site, and a great insight into the Roman empire in the north of England. Thousands of artefacts on display in the museum are definitely worth seeing. The actual fort and Roman village remains are awesome to see too. Plenty of parking. The cafe is also nice for light lunches too. Toilets are also available. The gift shop will have something for every budget. The book shop is also a must for avid readers for all things Roman. Definitely worth the money. Saver tickets can be bought for the sister site at the Roman army museum just along the road.

Lovely little history lesson in the visitor center and info boards walking in the ruins. You can walk along the wall for a while in both directions, something I'll be doing more of when the days get longer.

Had a great time visiting this Roman Fort. Excellent day out. Great museum & coffee shop. I was a little disappointed that some people decided not to pay and just enter the Fort via the North Gate side of the Hadrian's wall pathway, climbing over the small fence to enter the Fort, avoiding staff that were there to check paid tickets. This needs addressing by Management! Otherwise, highly recommend a visit there. The staff were lovely too, very knowledgeable about the area.

Beautiful scenery. Hard uphill walking, especially in the mud of winter. Suggest sticking to paths when it’s so muddy else you will slip! Toilets nearby and an excellent cafe - I highly recommend the millionaire’s shortcake.

40 years ago I visited Housesteads with my father. In turn I took my son. Some of the best ruins, we headed on to Sycamore gap and back. Wonderful day.

The site was fabulous and the museum was informative and well laid out, if small. We came this time to see the artwork which was, well, just a bit mad, but great to get and impression of the height of the fort in its heyday. All staff welcoming and chatty but not pushy. Dog friendly!

The largest Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall, well worth spending at least a couple of hours here. We had a superb walk along the wall, from Steel Rig car park, in beautiful weather. There are a number of explanatory boards around the side and a small but excellent museum close by.

Great and accessible place along Hadrian’s Wall to go (by car and public transport at certain times of year). The visitor centre is a little small so would advise going at a less busy time but when the weather is fine as it is a c.10 minute walk from the car park and bus stop. There are a few mile castles, etc. nearby so great place to base yourself if you want to see several landmarks along a relatively short distance.

Wow! What a fantastic day. Great walk for families and dogs. Loved seeing the Roman ruins and walking on the wall. The visitor center had clean bathrooms and a small cafe. At the ruins there was a small gift shop and museum.

So stunning to be here where our ancestors fought and lived forging a different future for generations to come. To walk from here down to Sycamore gap (Robin Hood) and down to the Sill just a beautiful walk even in the rain and mud!

One of the places where imagination switches on. Plenty help for your mind with films and drawings so you can find yourself in a Roman soldiers shoes. Superb location to see some of the best parts of Hadrians Wall. Walk a few miles along the wall both ways to appreciate it's beauty

A bit of a hill down and then up to get to the ruins and the bit of Hadirians wall that is there next to ruins. If you want to just get some pictures and don't want to spend too long there then this is a good spot But there is the option to go in the museum and ruins if you want Otherwise just pay for the reasonable priced parking.

Being disabled I was unable to make much of Being in this Fabulous place once more. Luckily my companion wasn't constrained and he enjoyed every second of his voyage into the past. I had the sheer joy of sitting at the south gate, on my mobility scooter, drinking in the ambience.

Fabulous Roman fort Remains. It's quite a climb from the car park to the site and admissions shop. There is a small museum and an interactive video to watch. Our young children enjoyed looking for the signs from Felix a Roman soldier who explained the site in a child friendly way.

Exploring these Roman ruins during winter was enjoyable due to the lack of other tourists. There is plenty of information displays throughout the ruins explaining each section of the fort. There were great views of Hadrin's wall and it was possible to walk along the sections connected to the fort although this was quite steep and appropriate footwear is recommended. There's a small museum beside the fort which is a decent if not short experience. There's an uphill walk from the car park and it's quite muddy in the winter, so take this into account if you are planning a visit.

Fantastic place to visit. The only negative is the climb up to the site. It is a proper path takes about 15 minutes. However, it is a long climb. If you are infirm, or asthmatic, it could be an issue. Once you reach the site, it is amazing. The views are exceptional. The place is a lot bigger than you expect. The staff were great, very knowledgeable and friendly. Dog friendly which is a bonus. The facilities are very clean and tidy.

Lovely area and enjoyed the walk along the wall from housesteads to Sycamore gap, we took the military walk as it was easier and a little away from the wall but didn't take away from the fact we were there. Sycamore gap lived up to what I was expecting, and emotional for me as my last girlfriend who passed away in 2020 from cancer, wanted to go and couldn't make it, but had her favourite me to you bear with me and her photo, would really recommend a visit.

It's beautiful.... I didn't know there was an Abbey here and we turned up quite late but we're still able to have a wander around inside, but missed the cafe and the shop. Even outside is lovely although at the moment there is some scaffolding up for renovation The space inside is stunning, some beautiful stained glass and lots of information about certain highlights within the building It has a very friendly feel once inside, you don't feel restricted just very welcome... A beautiful place to visit even if churches aren't really your thing it's definitely worth it... Can't wait to pop back and visit the Abbey cafe

Hexham Abbey has been a place of worship since the seventh century and is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in England. It was founded in 1072 by Saint Wilfrid, and it's where he established Hexham as a bishopric with his seat at the monastery. The abbey was restored during Victorian times and now welcomes visitors from all over the world to explore its beauty. There's so much to see and do at Hexham Abbey, from admiring the architecture to taking a stroll in the Sele Park. You can also learn about the abbey's history and its connection to Saint Wilfrid on one of the informative guided tours. So if you're looking for an interesting and beautiful place to visit in Northumberland, Hexham Abbey is definitely worth a visit! We were lucky enough to get married there (many moons ago), The Hexham Abbey Festival is still running this year, there are several other festivals throughout the summer months too. I still remember seeing the wonderful Tibetan monks performing at the Abbey with their amazing costumes and music. Hexham Abbey Gift shop and tea room is a lovely place to have a cup of tea and a piece of cake. The gift shop has some really nice things in it. There is also a children's play area which my little ones always enjoy when we visit. Hexham Abbey is definitely one of the treasures of the northeast that's worth visiting. Please note: The abbey is closed every day from 12pm-12.30pm.

A grand building in the heart of Hexham. Free to go in but you can have a tour which takes in the crypt for £3. Otherwise entry to the crypt is £3. A great place to just wander round and soak in the atmosphere. There is a good display area with the history of the Abbey with interactive displays. There is a cafe on site which has a lovely outside sitting area. Parking in Hexham is via disc. We parked on carpark at the bottom of the hill which has a Waitrose. This is a public car park however you need a disc. Parking is free but there are different coloured parking bays. Depending on how long you want to stop. We got our disc at Waitrose but these discs cover the whole of Northumberland so keep in the car. Access to the town centre was up a steep hill and past some very old buildings including the old jail.

We visited on the weekend of the Festival of Flame and were very lucky to pop into the Abbey as they were preparing it for the evening light display. What a treat it was to see the team setting up the wonderful display in this majestic building, and with beautiful music to accompany. It's something we'll remember for a long time. Hexham is fast becoming one of our favourite places to visit and each time we come, we visit the abbey. They've created a great visitor experience, including a lovely cafe. Other such venues could learn alot from Hexham Abbey.

Beautiful Abbey, not only architecturally but historically as well. The history of the building is interesting and the crypt deserves a visit too. A really wonderful place of worship in the centre of the lovely town of Hexham.

Great little gem in the heart of Hexham. Really informative with a section set out to educate you all about the history of the Abbey, lots of little activities to get children involved with and very interactive I particularly loved the items that had been found under the floorboards of the church such a little piece of history. We visited on a Sunday morning which probably wasn't the best choice as there was a service taking place. We still got to look round the main church part after the service but it did feel a little like we were intruding on the usual Sunday proceeding so I would advise try and avoid service time.

Well worth a visit if you are in town Inside the abbey, you can find some painted wood panels which are 5 centuries old. In addition, the abbey has a small crypt which can be visited The lady who helped us around the abbey was lovely

A really powerful experience, in this amazing place of centuries of worship. There are ancient memorials in this former monastery, and it's well worth a guided tour from one of the excellent official guides. The crypt is well worth a view. Live music is often performed there. What a venue!

This abbey is gorgeous. We went during the 'Moon' showing and wow, it's quite striking. The building itself is intricate and steeped in history. Particularly interesting was going into the crypt - an extra £3 each, very worthwhile! - and a guide even talked us through the history of the crypt, the oldest part of the abbey, before we headed down below. It's definitely worth a visit within this beautiful town. There is plenty of free parking within the town where you can stay up to two hours, you just might have a short walk to the abbey.

Huge Abbey in a small town. Extremely old building which is quite huge. Nice atmosphere inside which had plenty of details to look at. Beautiful stained glass windows which would have looked better if the sun was shining:)

What an incredible place. So much history and as always, so much to explore when you visit such a historic monument. We enjoyed learning about the hidden Saxon treasures while also taking time to pause and reflect on life. A real gem you must visit which is free.

We visited the Abbey to see the exhibition of wedding dresses over the last century. The exhibition was great, and the Abbey is beautiful.

Lovely Abbey well worth a visit with fantastic staff. The Moon exhibition is on until November and only costs £3 for adults and £1 for children. You can buy tickets on line or just pay on arrival. Well worth a visit. They also have a nice cafe serving a good selection of food. Great location right in the centre of a busy market town.

An old Abbey founded by St Wilfred in AD 674. In 2024 it is celebrating 1350 years of its foundation.

A beautiful 12th century abbey church located right in the centre of Hexham. I came here on a day excursion and spent just over an hour here. Admission was £3, and I also bought a handy visitor guide and map for £3. The abbey, which stands on the site of a Saxon church, is steeped in history and very atmospheric. There's much of interest to see from different periods of history including a Roman tombstone, an Anglo-Saxon cross, 15th century painted wooden panels and a frith stool used by medieval fugitives seeking sanctuary. There are also some lovely stained glass windows. The exhibition about the moon was an unexpected bonus, with a fantastic replica of the moon suspended from the ceiling. You get a great view of it from the top of the night stairs close to the entrance. The Saxon crypt is definitely not to be missed! It was locked up when I was there, but for £3 a very friendly lady steward unlocked the gate so that I could take a look inside. The steps leading down to it are steep and uneven (there is a handrail), but the narrow passages and the shrine, built by the Saxons with Roman stones, are well worth seeing. There's a café with outside tables where you can get light meals, a nice gift shop, and an interactive exhibition about the abbey's history that I did not get time to visit but would love to see if I come here again.

£3 entry and £3 for the crypt entry. Moon exhibition was on, so quite busy. Absolutely fantastic. Well worth the price and well worth visiting. Will go again when quiet. Recommended.

Absolutely fantastic photos doesn't do it justice. The facts and information that you find here are amazing, the films and all the artifacts are truly inspiring. Well worth a visit and with a lovely gift shop and cafe attached the experience is complete

Interesting. A bit small. The actual fort pretty much does not excist anymore. But they have plans to excavate some of it. The museum, although small is well laid out and organized. Not so many actual museum pieces but more focused on education with interactive attractions and films

Fantastic museum. Lots of artifacts and a lot quite unique. Also a very good 3-D movie. It has a little spot to drink something and of course the usual souvenir shop where you even can buy a replica roman helmet or gladius! Very friendly people who gave me a small reduction because I didn't buy the combined ticket at vindolanda because I wasn't sure if I had enough time. Very glad I've finally been there

Great little museum, with clean amenities, knowledgeable staff, and a good walk to Hadrian’s wall! Any fitness level can enjoy this stop-over! Need a break from driving? Or a quick snack? They have both, and a clean restroom. There are artifacts that can be enjoyed by any age range, and there’s a cute gift shop as well. Short little hike (if you are up for that) to a portion of Hadrian’s wall. I won’t ruin the museum, but will post my pics of loot! Enjoy!

My first visit to anything Roman in Britain, and this brilliantly informative and incredibly interesting museum is a great introduction to understanding the Roman way of life on the edge of their empire. The friendly lady at the visitor desk advised us to watch the award winning short 3D film first which gave us a superb contemporary view of how the wall and fort of Vindolanda was in it’s prime, mixed with drone footage of it today. It was excellent. Then we toured the museum, in awe of it’s artefacts, information and tactile stone engravings. My wife and I loved it and can thoroughly recommend a visit to anyone and of all ages. Wanting to extend our Roman knowledge further, we bought several books from the shop. They might be for kids but we have fun camping and reading facts to each other over large glasses of wine….but only wine with Latin names of course. On leaving the museum, for our visit, there was even a gentleman in character outside in a tent giving talks about Roman medical care during battle and domestic life. That was interesting too. When you pay on entering the museum you get the option of discount entry to Vindolanda and Birdoswald Roman forts. They were visits for us over the next couple of days.

Very interesting, moved to Scotland 12 years ago from London, always planned to view hadrians wall now i have. Whilst viewing the wall, was told to visit the roman army museum, lots of artifacts, 3d movie on roman empire, if this is what your interested in, very worth while visiting 5 stars

A seriously good museum set in the heart of rural Cumbria border. Excellent use of peppers ghost, the 3d film was a little quiet but all round a great experience with surrounding views of the countryside.

Lovely museum! Great for a visit after a long stroll along Hadrian's Wall to sate your thirst for more Roman history. Lots of historic pieces and replicas to ogle. The 3D film about Roman Army life was very professionally shot and added good context for the rest of the exhibits. Swing by the shop afterward to pick yourself up a functional pillow shield to keep you well rested and defended.

Good for all ages, well run and put together… Some really nice walks around, and you can get right up and onto the wall… Fascinating 🤩👌🏻

Visited here after first visiting Vindolanda. Great displays and information with interactive elements. 3D film was interesting as was the small film on daily life for soldiers on the wall. Educational, Enjoyable with so much to see.

If you're interested in Roman history, this is a great place to visit especially with Vindolanda close by. Awesome 3D film which really brings that era to life and lots of interactive stuff for kids. Tea a reasonable price too!!

This is a brilliant little museum. While it is in quite a remote area, there’s plenty of exploring and walking to do nearby. We brought our 16 month old along who absolutely loved it - lots of interesting artefacts and information. There’s also a little gift shop and cafe (the coffee cake was nice), and the staff are very friendly.

A truly incredible day out. We spent the afternoon here (my wife and I) and learnt a lot. Enjoyed all of the information available, the artifacts and history. The film they showed was brilliant. The one negative is the cafe was quite expensive and limited for options. The food was nice but just a bit on the pricey side.

A thoroughly enjoyable little museum. It's more geared towards kids and the causal adult than the serious scholar, but it's an interesting way to spend a couple of hours. We found the staff friendly and helpful. The cafe looked nice, too.

This place is a little bit in the middle of nowhere but is a great little museum. There are some great pieces of story telling and videos to watch, including a 20 minute 3D movie. The gift shop is good and there is a small cafe if you are hungry. You can take a walk on Hadrians wall also which is a short walk away.

A few disabled bays, the car park would get overflowing in high season, but we didn't have that problem. It is disabled friendly to a degree, I would suggest a helper/carer to come along. The entrance floor is flat and has a lovely cafe, with reasonably priced goods, and a gift shop! There is a steep slope going down to the lower level, with hand rail. This is the beginning of the display and screen interaction, and another steady slope then leads to another level. It is well worth a visit! All the staff we encountered were very warm and welcoming, helpful, and friendly.

A brilliant depiction of roman life in the North East. Each display has been set up to the smallest details, giving that feeling of realism. The videos as you walk around are informative. The eagles eye movie of the wall is brilliant and still shows sycamore gap in all its glory. The staff were friendly and more than happy to answer any questions and the café was brilliant. Fresh sandwiches and tray bakes as well as a fully stocked gift shop. Would highly recommend a visit, especially with the discounted tickets that get you into Vinolanda also.

You can walk the wall for free and there are some many parts to walk along. Some of the walks are steep, so be prepared. Some lovely views as you go along. It is just a shame there is not much left of the turrets anymore.

Loved, loved, loved walking the middle section of Hadrians Wall over four days. Absolutely amazing scenery, some parts are quite steep so can be quite difficult, but doable none the less. Very popular but you can walk miles without meeting another hiker. Lots to see along the way. I thoroughly recommend that people give this a go.

Fascinating the effort that went into building this immense structure. I feel walking it's entire length one day should be on my bucket list!

We were very lucky to have a gorgeous, sunny day to wander slowly around the vast amount of ruins and enjoy the lovely countryside surrounding them too. The kids found it very informative and enjoyed being able to walk through the ruins and imagine what it might have been like to have been a Roman soldier staying there. The staff were nice and always on hand to answer questions. The museum area was very interesting and had a lot of amazing stonework and other objects on display. And dogs are very welcome too!

One of the best Roman forts on the wall, with great childrens activities during the holidays. It is very scenic. The Riverside cafe nearby is brilliant.

Brilliant Day! super friendly staff. Spent around 2.5 hours looking inside the museum and loads to see outside I love the fact you can get up and close to all the ruins. Book online as you get the discount. For a sunny Saturday car park wasn't that all to busy. £3 parking

Brilliant day out to explore, if you can go on the tour I'd recommend. Excellent site some steep bits if mobility an issue but still plenty you can see if you take it steady. Well laid out with informative boards. Amazing to see the level of what has been found. The museum small but packed with interesting finds. A definite thumbs up!

This is an amazing park with a nice museum and great outdoor walk to experience what the Roman fort looked like and how it was connected to Hadrian's Wall and the North Tyne River. Could have spent hours here if I had more time. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff! Highly recommend!!

Very friendly staff, with good information about Chester's . Nice tea room. Roman fort layout was well preserved and you could imagine the parts that were not exposed, very impressive bathhouse near to where the bridge used to be. The museum with all the artifacts that were found was very interesting, a lot of intact items, gave you an idea of what life was like then .

I'm sure everything positive that could be said about this place has been said thousands of times. It's one of my favourite places in the world. Right from the off, the EH staff in the gift shop are warm and welcoming. After that, it's straight to the fantastic museum, then out into the fort itself. Let your imagination run away with you (as I do, every time) and try to picture the site as it was 1800 years ago, with the sounds and smells of a bustling cavalry garrison. I will be back - again!

Really good place to have a walk. Lots to see, the ground is somewhat flat afew places were uneven but ok. It was really cold the day we went but the cute tea room made up for it. The museum was informative and interesting

Really great place to visit if your interested in history, I think this is the best roman site we've been to. Was really surprised about the amount that remained and the vast collection in the museum. Really enjoyed reading the history of the land owner too and of the dig. Great views whilst on the fields. We came on the Thurs and returned on the Sunday for the falconry day as we enjoyed it so much. Nice little cafe, clean facilities and friendly staff in the well stocked gift shop.

Wonderful place. All sections of the fort and wall are gated, so you don't miss any (you can enter and walk right on the site itself) with information boards and sign posts about what is what. Little museum with lots of artefacts, a gift shop I could have spent about a million pound in (English Heritage member, thank the Lord) and lovely, kind staff who really go out of their way for you. There are horses and sheep on the little walk through, which was cute, and we went on a hot day, so the raspberry lemonade from the tea room was refreshing and delicious! Pay for parking but free for memberships, and I believe discounted for related memberships (don't quote me on that). Can be an almost free day out depending what you're after.

A very interesting site - worth a visit. Good cafe on site and small museum with interesting story of its excavation.

Great English Heritage site with ample parking. Toilet facilities, cafe and gift shop which are a big plus and very clean. The Roman site itself is fascinating with lots more to be uncovered I have no doubt, and a museum to show what has been unearthed. Great views over the river too and all in all a great day out. So good we joined English Heritage as there are loads more sites to be seen!

We were on our way home when we saw this sign. So I followed it. Up a long windy, narrow road. Go right too the end. If it looks like there's hardly anyone there. Read the sign in the photos.... My advice? Go forward, don't leave. You won't regret it and you'll learn a lot. The lady who spoke with us ... Over an hour, just the Wife and I, The lady loves her job. ( Especially cuddling the ferrets. ) Definitely.... Go in.... Go... In.

Yesterday we went to Falconry days for my husband 50th birthday and had a fantastic afternoon, we were able to handle an Owl, Buzzard, Red kite, and a kestrel.. OMG so amazing their colours and markings are really beautiful. With Amy guiding us all the time it was really good fun and beautiful to see these amazing birds up close. Thank you so much to Mark and Amy for making us feel welcome and so friendly. We were also able to look at the other birds in their aviaries and wow there were about 90 in total. So we would definitely recommend this to do... Such a brilliant experience xx

Visited this lovely place the other day whilst on holiday and flew some beautiful owls. It was amazing. Such an honour to see these beautiful birds close up and have them land on our hands. The birds are all clearly so well cared for by a lovely family/team. The lady doing the owl talk was brilliant, funny and informative. My girls who are both very shy (including one who rarely goes out or speaks at all!) loved the opportunity to have a go flying the birds in a quiet setting without any pressure, and they both took thousands of photos on their phone. It was a lovely experience and memory for them.

Stopped here by chance on our way home from a weekend away. Staff are extremely friendly and very knowledgeable who will give you some fantastic information and facts about the birds they have and birds in general. The birds look in beautiful condition and from what I could tell, very happy. We payed for the Raptor Experience and we were not disappointed. It was a fantastic experience to be so close to birds of prey. Added bonus was the lovely friendly dogs. Thanks for a great day!

Falconry Days did a show for our wedding, which we highly recommend! The birds are both entertaining and fascinating and the whole experience was very informative.

Got a voucher for a half day experience for my 30th birthday. This place is great. The staff are lovely, very knowledgeable on each bird, and you can tell the birds are looked after well. The actual experience was very good. Got plenty of opportunities to take pictures both in the aviaries and outside. I flew the barn owl, the great grey owl, eagle owl, chaco owl, buzzard, and a kestrel, and it was amazing to see each one so up close. Thanks guys.

Had a great visit on a Sunday morning with the kids, easy to find, massive car park, staff super friendly & very good explaining to the kids, lots of well looked after birds & a few very friendly dogs that like to wander with you

Absolutely worth the money. The handler had a wealth of knowledge and you find out so many interesting facts and tidbits about the birds. The birds are well looked after and they are gorgeous!

An amazing place and well worth a visit. The dedication, enthusiasm and care that Mark, Mandy and Anna have for the birds clearly shows. All were very knowledgeable and able to answer any questions. They have a vast collection of birds all with their own unique character and thoroughly enjoyed seeing some of them in flight.

Went with my 11 year old son for a mini experience day. A great and informative tour then we flew three different birds. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience and vowed to return even before we had left. Lovely surroundings, shame we had to leave ( prior arrangement), saw another group picnic in the field, a nice setting and would of been great. We will stay longer next time!

The cafe do not allow dogs. The food is very well prepared, is filling and has a great taste. The exploration area for the children is excellent. Witting on the balcony on the rain in stunningly beautiful. A great place to park and visit. Dogs can sit outside of the cafe but there is no shelter in the Rain. Staff extremely helpful and they have a free to use toilet

Lovely space and really interesting exhibits (we particularly enjoyed the small show in collaboration with Unison Pastels about the night sky) The views from the living roof are beautiful and the cafe was great. As we had our hound with us we happily decamped to the seating area outside where dogs are allowed and basked in the sun & enjoyed drinks and snacks as well as the stunning architecture & surrounding landscape. Worth planning a visit and lunch as lots of parking space too.

An architectural triumph where history and landscape come together to tell the story of the Roman occupation along the famous Hadrian's Wall. There are exhibitions to see with free entry but the car parking is pay as you exit. There is a decent cafe on site and it is situated minutes away from Hadrian's Wall and the famous Sycamore Gap.

Parked at The Sill for our walk to Sycamore Gap and didn't even realise you could go inside (last time we came we thought it was just the Youth Hostel, oops). It's a lovely walk around inside with lots of beautiful artwork to see and had a huge interactive display that my little one loved. Really enjoyed our look around. Parking is pay on exit and facilities were clean! Enjoy that you can go onto the rooftop and see for miles around you.

Victory of style over substance. Not a lot to see/do there. Good facilities and a great place to park whilst you're walking to Hadrian's Wall and Sycamore Gap.

The Sill is absolutely great. At first glance, the exhibitions seem small, but they are packed with educational information with plenty of it being interactive. The most impressive thing was the sand table and brilliant automated projection of changing topography. Yes, you have to pay for parking, but it wasn't extortionate and the rest of the centre is free. We were further impressed by the cafe, it was table service but the staff were unbelievably efficient and our order took very little time to arrive. Plenty of establishments could learn a lot from the attentiveness of the staff. Don't be put off by needing to be seated (other reviews have stated they left as they didn't want to wait), we were seated promptly and have had far longer waits when receiving counter service. In fact, we waited nearly 20 minutes at a notable service station the day before this visit, even though both cafes were a similar busyness (when taking into account size and staffing)

Being a local we have visited a few times. Most recently to the excellent 'Oot and Aboot' exhibition about Coquetdale, my home valley. So great to see this history being preserved and recorded both visually and audio. A unique way of life that needs to be documented. The cafe however left a lot to be desired on a recent visit. Tables not cleaned, slow service, cold food and off milk. The staff seemed to be trying though and were pleasant, just totally overwhelmed. Table service in place does not work and the food was cold when it arrived. The rest of the center is tired and lacks any purpose with little to no staff greeting or engaging. Such a shame for the National Parks 'flagship' experience.

A stunning centre and YHA from which to explore this amazing landscape ..do not miss it if you are interested in archaeology, the brilliant night sky, time out in nature with your family or by yourself, bring your bikes and enthusiasm for Roman Forts and the stunning remains, Hadrian's wall, thousands of Roman artefacts and the sheer pleasure of being outdoors in the fresh air walking in the footsteps of our ancestors.

The Sill is free to enter, you pay for the parking (number plate recognition). It's a great starting point for walks or stop on a walk. Beautiful building, great view from the roof. Took us a little while before we found some of the plants, showed on the leaflet that grow on the roof. There were more than on first view seen. Nice shop, we bought some beers as a present for family.

Was very interesting and useful. Thinks to learn for young and old would recommend to anyone who love the land and animals around them and care for the investment and what we do to take care of it. The sand pit was cool,I want one.

Great walk up to the Sycamore Gap from The Sill. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the confusing way that the cafe works, it is a wait to be seated affair which isn't well put across especially when you want to sit outside. The drinks weren't bad apart from the chai latte which apparently was a latte without coffee, but the cakes were mediocre and the scone was dry.

Great site, lovely building, can even go on the roof. Excellent art exhibitions and play room. Good play area out the back. Didn't try the cafe but it smelt nice.

Popped in on a very wet and windy day for what we hoped would be a nice warning breakfast treat at the cafe, before heading off on our 4 hour drive home. Was pleasantly surprised to see a full menu with a full English breakfast to match. Really lovely coffee too. We then headed down to the exhibition which was great. Particularly enjoyed the videos of locals recounting their different views as the users of the rugged Northumberland landscape. It's definitely worth popping in if you're visiting the wall.

A lovely cafe serving good quality food and a nice place to sit on a rainy day. We had bacon butties and tea and all was delicious and served by friendly and helpful staff. The gift shop has a very good range of items and supports local artists and suppliers. Bought one or two Christmas gifts and some delicious locally made chocolate bars. Where else could you get chocolate with rhubarb? Absolutely gorgeous.

Friendly and knowledgeable team on site. Shame it’s only open limited times at present, as definitely worth a visit for any local history, nature or art lovers. Home to Thomas Bewick, wood-engraver and natural history author. Some of his work can be found here and is also on display at the Laing Art Gallery and Great North Museum, both in Newcastle.

We've passed on the main road many times but never expected that there was much to see at Cherryburn. How wrong we were. The real strength is the knowledgeable volunteers who describe the life and work of Thomas Bewick, and demonstrate how he would have printed engravings.

Very informative and pleasant staff, interesting intro talk, and pleasant location. Very rural.

Inspirational, even on a rainy autumnal day. The guide we met was enthusiastic, informative and friendly and told us about the birthplace cottage and the current exhibition. The press room, where the printing is demonstrated is equally enjoyable, as was the museum section. There was an inviting warmth and lively energy about the place. I really loved the paint choices, a glowing green in the museum and a warm maroon on external woodwork. Looking forward to a visit in spring. Alas, no cake.

Although this is a small NT property it is nonetheless very interesting and gets 5 stars from me because of the super friendly staff. Jordan, who looks after the garden was particularly engaging and fun. The smaller house on this site is where Thomas Bewick was born whilst the larger house, now housing the print room and museum, was built later in the 1820s by his brother's family. You can see some of Thomas Bewick's original illustrations in the museum, as well as several portraits of him , and the tools he used for carving his fine images onto woodblocks for printing. In a rather nice touch, they will give you an instantly produced print in the print room straight from the 19th Century printing press. Oh yes, and the views across the valley from here are fabulous, I could sit and look at this view all day long.

Small but fun. Great little treasure our first visit here today and it was quite rainey. However the staff were amazing very helpful and very enthusiastic generally lovely people we felt very welcome and very looked after. The kids printing, den building and lawn were great despite the rain. Due to the weather it felt like we had the place to ourselves but it was really good and again can't praise the staff enough.

Lovely place to visit. The birthplace of Thomas Bewick. The staff are very knowledgeable and if you're lucky there will be some demonstrations. His engravings were incredible when you look at the detail. There is a nice garden to explore and some Alpacas to see.

A pleasant place to visit. Staff were knowledgeable and entertaining making for an interesting visit. The displays of printwork just makes you realise how skillful Thomas Bewick was and how detailed his printing blocks had to be. Plenty of parking space but unfortunately there's no cafe so if it's a nice day take a picnic as it's a very relaxing place.

A nice little place to visit. The staff here are by far the best compared to any other places I have been and you can tell they love what they do. They're very friendly and helpful and added nicely to the experience. You can also see alpaca's which was epic especially if you haven't seen one before

The art studios and attached cafe are a lovely place to visit, the artwork and gifts for sale in the shop part of the studio are excellent and of very good value. We called for coffee and cakes at the cafe, well within opening time, and were the only customers in, yet the staff seemed preoccupied with something else in the kitchen area and whilst we were served efficiently, it was not with a warm welcome and the other matter (whatever it was) seemed to dominate. The food was tasty and the drinks very palatable, so no problem there. Accessibility is excellent for people with limited abilities.

Nice range of craft items. In the middle of Allendale so easy access. We didn't try the attached cafe but it was busy and there was a tempting aroma.

Brilliant little gift shop ( the most reasonablly priced handmade goods you'll find in all of Europe! 🌍) The staff are also lovely. The cafe has great coffee!

Recommend this little gem hidden in the hills. Their home made cakes & coffee are great and there is a wide range of artist works to browse. (2 coffees and 2 cakes for under £11) It's only about 15 minutes south of the A69 at Haltwhistle but on a sunny day the journey across the moor the landscape is a delight.

Really nice hidden gem. Various routes available depending on your ability. We completed the brown route in approximately 2hrs. All walks helpfully waymarked all the way around. Lovely views as you walk. Car park big enough, with overflow available if necessary. This is an unmanned National Trust site, so no cafe or attendants in any capacity. It is very well looked after though. Parking charges for non members at a pay and display machine, or you can use Pay by Phone App. Well worth a visit.

We did the brown trail on our visit, 3 miles/ 4.5km. There are various trails you can choose from right up to 9.5km. Will definitely return to do more trails. Parking is £2 for up to 4 hours, £4 for all day. Excellent place with mixed woodland, open fields and a river. If you like mushroom spotting that's a bonus.

Came on a Sunday for a quiet walk and it seemed to be quite busy, there were just enough spaces for parking but tbh it didn't seem that busy once inside the area. There is a number of routes that can be taken so definitely a choice for novice and seasoned walkers. One of the paths were closed due to storm damage. Very enjoyable walk even on some of the muddier trails.

Love this place, at anytime of the year. Great for dog walks, picnics, and a paddle in the river. Rope swing near the farm needs a new stick to sit on though 🤔 usually a must. Car park gets popular at weekends, there are picnic tables there, and toilets. Could do with a few dog waste bins on the way round though.....

There are several lovely woodland & riverside walks in this area, helpfully displayed on a map at the start, by the car park. Parking is pay & display, or free for National Trust members - don't forget your card! Worth mentioning, some of the walks have quite difficult inclines and declines, including the shortest/easiest walk currently due to downed trees and landslides by the river.

Absolutely lovely place to spend walking for the day, i can imagine autumn being the best time to visit. Free to use clean toilets on site. Parking very reasonable at £2 for 4hrs or £4 for all day...cash only tho. Only negative was the path markers which swapped and charged making it impossible to follow, but if your out for the day getting lost just adds to the adventure 🤷🤣

What a great place for a walk with your dog. Only £2 parking for 4 hours and a beautiful trail to follow. A little up and down in places but stunning. Some of the sign posts could do with a little work to make the clearer.

Beautiful walk. I went during the week so it was really quiet. Very peaceful and relaxing. Would recommend. £4 for a full day's parking

Great walks, steep sides to some paths.. plenty of parking, toilets to the far end.. From the carpark we followed the clearly marked orange path route, which took us about a hour an half and lead us up high along the river allen, before dropping down to the river, so the dogs and grandkids could have a mess about in the water... Benches can be found carved into felled trees on this route.. at the highest point of our route, we found a log/tree cabin that looked over part of the country park, nice for a minute break... Next time I'll do the brown route that takes more time and follows the river, then you Cross over and back down the other side, to return to the carpark.. lots of wildlife and birds, great scenery for budding photographers...

Outstanding autumn walk through the woods and trails. Beautifully maintained and very quiet on a weekday.

Great walk both sides of the river, other routes also available. Only complaint would be some more simple benches along the routes, especially at top of inclines. Lots of birds singing. Toilet block near car park.

Enjoyable walk, mostly on decent paths but can get muddy towards Staward Peel.

An absolutely stunning walk with various trails depending on what distance you want. You'll walk parallel to the river and further in dogs can drink and take a paddle. We walked the brown route in early October and saw hardly anyone. We ended up walking several of the coloured trail routes having found signage a bit confusing. This place epitomises all that is nature and country life. I'd recommend taking a flask and some snacks as plenty of places to picnic. Parking plentiful and very cheap. Only real bug bare was there could be more signage guiding you back to the main car park. There are none and if like us you get off trail then you're in for a confusing return walk. Downloading a decent trail app will help. Not suitable for those with mobility difficulties or pushchairs. I wouod warn some trails can be challenging with high steps and plenty of steep ascents. Highly recommended.

Its worth checking out but much more to see along hadrians wall, id advise wearing boots or Wellies especially in the winter month's. Its a pay car park but you will but be there more than 30mins

I found this site on Hadrian's Wall to be very interesting. It's small but definitely worth stopping to visit.

It's 2 an hour to park in the carpark it's only 5 mins walk to the temple. Was interesting

Great as a stopping spot. Can enjoy sitting in the temple (on good weather) look up at the fort. Great that people have also been (re)creating the temple and fort. If you have a car, it's likely better, but with the Hadrians Wall bus 3 day pass and a Historic Scotland or English Heritage membership you get to travel along the wall and make the stop.

It's worth a visit if you are in the area, but it isn't worth a special journey just for this site. Parking onsite for a small fee.

This was a lovely find off the road in a field. Best to visit late in the day as it doesn't take long and you may have it to yourself like I did. Good sized carpark but there is a fee to park whereas the site is free. Perhaps you could chance not paying depends on time of day and how long you intend to stay.

A real treat for anyone interested in the Romans' time in Britain. A little surreal, as it is in a field alongside some sheep. There was a very nice coffee cart in the nearby car park.

Old Roman temple with an info board, you'll see everything in 5-10min. Got here during my Hadrian's wall walks so I didn't have to pay for the parking lot which is rather expensive. Also the weather was nice, I guess the way towards the temple can be very muddy when it's raining. Nice to see once but I would not come back just for the temple.

Amazing place. With there was more Info on the religion of this place. And no Info on the well near it which has long been lost.

The mist awesome little temple, a hidden gem. A small parking area which charges to stop. There are several things to see this point of the wall, a fort (which is grassed over) and Hadrian's wall.

Celebrated our son's wedding there yesterday it was fantastic. Couldn't fault the afternoon tea it was amazing and the care and effort that all of staff put in was great. A magical place thank you for making the day so special.

After a winding drive under enormous trees we discovered this idyllic spot, which was as much a surprise as it was exquisite. The buildings are cute, picturesque and real - I mean, you can see they really were old station buildings, waiting room and railway sheds but painted up - sweet is the only word. However, the garden is just inspiring . I am currently working out how to change and add to my own now that I've seen what they've done there. The cream tea was delicious and served up on old fashioned china crockery- honestly, my childhood came roaring back!

Been here before but this was for a wedding. Lovely informal setting. Great cakes. Pretty china and decoration. Garden is great. Sad to learn it is no longer open daily as a cafe.🙄

Great welcome for the whole family and especially our pet dog who was given a biscuit by the owner when we arrived. This off the beaten 'track' place is definitely worth a visit any time.

Off the beaten track but a lovely place to spend a couple of hours. Have a cup of tea, a slice of cake and a wander down the old rail track, now planted as a woodland garden.

A great day out, not overcrowded, all the staff and stewards we came across were very friendly and helpful.

Lovely day out, sun was shining all day so ended up very sunburnt (Tip - Absolutely pack sunscreen as shade is limited). Beautiful surroundings and a real family friendly atmosphere. Huge green spaces perfect for a picnic. Had some winners as well but even if I hadn't I would still recommend.

Excellent day out today. Had a table booked for us in the curlew room, staff were great and attentive and looked after us really well all day. Fantastic experience and will certainly be going back there. Thought the food and drink prices were very reasonable for a race course. We were a party of 6 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Really friendly, good facilities, even hot water in the loos! Great viewing, easy access. Would thoroughly recommend and can't wait to go again.

Racecourse with a view! I have absolutely nothing to compare this racecourse against as it’s my first time at the races. I’m basing it on how much fun I had. Bars were busy but queues went fast enough. Plenty of places to bet. Picnic benches and plenty of grass area to sit and enjoy the races. Take your own picnic, chairs, blankets, etc. Not allowed own alcohol! There was an ice cream van, bouncy castle and Fish and Chip van onsite as well. They have a caravan site attached, which benefits from the amazing views. Dog friendly! Dress code- smart casual. People in jeans and T-shirt all the way up to head to toe tweed! Great day out.

Lovely course. Did go to the Henderson suite as it was a special birthday. Lovely staff and food - veg a bit too aldente for us but great starters and puddings. Would go again.

Good racing with excellent viewing to most of the course. We stayed in our campervan in next door caravan park which was excellent and my wife was very happy to view the racing for free from there while I paid £12 to enter the course. Beautiful setting and a great racecourse.

Excellent rural race course. Free bus up to the course from the railway station or bus station. And back after last race. Spacious viewing area on grassy banks. Not too crowded. Friendly and informal.

Good day out at the racecourse- Small friendly well organised scenic racecourse - very cold, but it was October - plenty of food venues to recharge and reasonable prices.

Love this course. We come twice a year usually a large group of us. Great course. It has it's own climate up there though dress with layers ha ha. Lovely course.

Hexham racecourse has to be the most scenic I've ever been to. It was the friendliest course I've ever visited as well. I'll certainly be returning even though it's over 230 miles from my home . Thanks Hexham, a great experience for me.

Well worth a look to see the oldest purpose built jail in England and at 4.50 per adult if more than one visiting the price is very good . Not a huge amount to see, but what there is was very interesting . I can imagine that children really enjoy it as there was plenty of interactive things for them to do . Well worth a visit.

Absolute rubbish, not worth the money. Four small rooms on four floors with virtually nothing in them. A lift takes you to each floor. You can't get out in the dungeon it's a short commentary in the lift. The annual pass they give you is a waste of paper nobody is ever going to visit twice.

Right in the middle of Hexham, it's easy to find and access. Reasonable entry fee, which provides free re-entry for a year. Particularly liked the children's area where they could do brass rubbing and dressing up in period costumes. Although the gaol is not big, it has lots of information on its history.

It's OK for less than a fiver. But don't expect to spend a day here! About 30 to 40 mins is enough to see everything. Could do with someone to tell you what it's all about rather than reading onwards with info on them. We were the only ones in there.

Brilliant place to visit and the young man giving the talk made the experience even better. Just thinking about how & why people were imprisoned in them days for sometimes silly crimes made me really think about our judicial system of today.

Well worth a look to see the oldest purpose built jail in England and at 4.50 per adult if more than one visiting the price is very good . Not a huge amount to see, but what there is was very interesting . I can imagine that children really enjoy it as there was plenty of interactive things for them to do . Well worth a visit.

Absolute rubbish, not worth the money. Four small rooms on four floors with virtually nothing in them. A lift takes you to each floor. You can't get out in the dungeon it's a short commentary in the lift. The annual pass they give you is a waste of paper nobody is ever going to visit twice.

Right in the middle of Hexham, it's easy to find and access. Reasonable entry fee, which provides free re-entry for a year. Particularly liked the children's area where they could do brass rubbing and dressing up in period costumes. Although the gaol is not big, it has lots of information on its history.

It's OK for less than a fiver. But don't expect to spend a day here! About 30 to 40 mins is enough to see everything. Could do with someone to tell you what it's all about rather than reading onwards with info on them. We were the only ones in there.

Brilliant place to visit and the young man giving the talk made the experience even better. Just thinking about how & why people were imprisoned in them days for sometimes silly crimes made me really think about our judicial system of today.

Fascinating history, quite a small building

Dog friendly little museum. Doesn't take long to get around but we enjoyed our visit with kids and dogs.

What an amazing treat! It's a fiver per person and really worth it as you get more out of it than expected!

Lovely wee jail tower. Not a great deal to see inside, but well laid out and staff very friendly. Admission price allows for 1 year of access to the premises.
