Newly-opened, clean and comfortable hotel with reasonable price. The location is just nearby the Otaru canal (5 minutes) and in a walkable distance to the Sakaimachi street (15 minutes), a strategic location for restaurants and shopping. The room was very comfortable and quite spacious. Overall, I had a really pleasant stay here except that they charge 1000 yen parking fee while the other hotels normally offer free parking space for guests.

Good location and comfortable beds this hotel is a great choice if you are in Otaru. The room was a bit small, as well as the bathroom but in line with the Japanese standards. No complementary water provided, 1000¥ for the parking.

We booked two rooms and both rooms smelled. The bathroom also had a strange odor. Bathhouse was crowded in the evening. They charged us 1500 yen per night for parking. We left the car in the parking lot after checking out and visited the museums nearby. Upon leaving, they charged us an additional 3000 yen (1000 yen per hour), which they didn’t tell us about when checking in. The only good thing was that the hotel was in a convenient location.

Excellent modern hotel with a great location. A walkable distance from Otaru Canal and the historic areas downtown. The rooms are comfortable and spacious. The bathing area in the room is separate from the toilet, which makes it much more pleasant to use. There's also a large communal bathing area on the 1st floor which is open late and immaculately clean.

Staff are friendly and the room is big with tub very nice and cozy However the people who have tattoos are unable to enter the osen which it's a culture of Japan But it didn't show on the website so kinda unfair. And I don't want to bother other people so I stay in my room. Tattoo unfriendly

Nice big rooms, close to the canal with a delicious breakfast. They have an onsen and someone at the front desk, no automated checkin. A big sink and separate toilet room. Plenty of electric outlets. They have parking next door. Hot water and fast WiFi.

The hotel is more a boutique styled one however without the perks such as a bar or communal areas. There was a set of public baths which we didn't get a chance to use. The hotel is located perfectly as it is right near the famous Otaru Canal and other tourist hotspots, and the room is 17m2 which is typical of Japanese hotels. We had a problem with the water pressure in our bathroom, which would ease off for minutes at a time and then restore itself. We visited Otaru during the peak season and paid accordingly, however I wouldn't say its the best value - but it is recommended due to its location and cleanliness. Also, we would like to specially thank the manager Shinji Okuda for handling the minor issue we had upon check-in in a professional and accommodating manner.

Hotel room is extremely small but consider he price we pay, it’s really live up the value. We stays in the western tatami room, it’s nice and clean. Public bath is small but there ain’t much hotel offer public bath in Otaru at this price range, so it’s totally acceptable. (Check out the painting the the bath, one paints Canal, lower right is so funny and doesn’t make sense!) But mine the car park. It offer indoor parking for a fee. We rent a 2019 FIT, a very popular rental car, they tried but the parking elevator keeps on saying it’s over hight thus forced us to pay extra to use the outdoor parking. Result is pile of snow every morning and we wasted a lot of time to wipe the snow. And the staff.... not exactly hospitality staff.... the females staff are pretty nice but male... we though we are in US Motel.... that should say how the male staff attitude.

The hotel itself was ok and clean.. no wow but ok.. the location was great as it was very near to the Otaru Canal BUT the service was very bad.. most of the staff was ok but there are a certain staff was quite rude even for non japanese standard. After taking bath at the communal bath.. I was probably dipped too long and get a bit dizzy and disorientated so I took a seat outside the communal bath to rest a bit. Then when we walk to the lift to go up the room. Instead of asking if I am feeling alright I was asked our room number and to show our room card by one of the lady staff from the front desk. We was wearing their hotel pyjamas and who else will have their pyjamas? We felt offended as we have booked 3 nights at the hotel and that was our 2nd night.. Then, the other day we wanted to use the washing machine and there are clothes inside which has already done. As per instruction on the washing machine, we asked the front desk to help where one of staff wanted to help to take the clothes out but the same lady staff asked us to wait for another 15mins. There are a clear instruction that if the clothes in the washing machine is done and other guest wanted to use the machine, they will help to clear it out. We felt offended for the 2nd time. Its not like our time is worthless as we need to go out to enjoy our day in Otaru also. The rate of the hotel and service doesn't justify. Better just book other similar rate hotel nearby. Other than that particular lady staff from the front desk, the other staff were quite ok and friendly

Parking slots are limited, need to park at the opposite lot with 1000 yen charge per day. People with tattoo are not allow to enter the public bath, quire unfair as they didn't mention in their webpage.

Would like to give a huge compliment to the wonderful staff of Hotel Torifito! We are grateful for the warmth and kindness of Japanese people here, especially the young lady at the check in counter (sorry I couldn't get your name!) who helped us with dinner reservations and answered our queries. The reservation manager Okuda San was also very helpful with changing our room type even though we have already checked in. Everyone from the counter staff, cleaning staff, breakfast staff were so friendly and helpful. Thank you for the beautiful surprise to celebrate my parents anniversary too, we are very touched. The breakfast spread was so delicious and generous, with sashimi, Hokkaido vegetables, ankesoba with mapo tofu, hokkaido milk and yoghurt, and my favourite salted squid and sakura ebi pasta! Rooms were clean, new and very exquisitely decorated with the port town theme. Best CP value hotel in Otaru. You have made our short stay in Otaru so pleasant and happy, and we hope to visit again.

Room was pretty good and location is great for visiting the canal area. Reception desk service not so great, maybe only one person seemed friendly, everyone else was cold and unwelcoming. Probably not a hotel that I would book again, even though it was good otherwise.

I tried to book a room on Agoda, and the system encountered an error. I accidentally booked two different rooms without realizing it. Although a service agent from Agoda attempted to help me negotiate with them, the efforts were unsuccessful. In the end, I had to pay for both rooms. They will issue you a ticket and get your car keys away, you have to show your ticket to them to get your car key everytime

hotel is new, staff explanation is clear, polite. follow the in house rules and it wont goes wrong. for parking, park at opposite is cheaper, pay by cash when exit. onsen area is small( can skip), checked out BEFORE 11am. lawson is near, highly recommended

The location of the hotel was convenient and near to the Otaru Canal. The staff was nice and the service was excellent. Check-in and check out procedure were smooth and fast. The room was cozy and clean. Recommend to stay in this hotel.

I came during the winter. It was a beutiful tiny station. Just walked by from the station to the Canal & find the atmospher of port city. When you exit the station you will be greeted by a very cold sea breeze.

It's a small train station but it's convenient. There are convenient store 7-11, shops, restaurants, clean toilets and coin lockers. There are many lockers and a few different sizes to leave the luggages. Very good! Taxi stand is just right in front of the station. Also the bus terminal is also in front of the station and easy to get a taxi. It's very convenient to transit. We took a taxi from the station to go to the hotel by the canal. It was 630 ¥ for the fare.

Small, vintage looking station. The famed seafood market is nearby. Tip: don't rush out of the station when your train reaches (everyone's going to head the same direction to the market and it'd be swamped). Stay for a few minutes, grab some great photos before leaving!

The last time I was here was January 2017 with my elder son and the snow-covered Station was beautiful. I thought I could chase the last Sakura blossoms in Otaru Park on May 8, 2018 (around 8-9 degree Celsius) but was disappointed. When I waited for a local train back to Sapporo from here, I found out that there was no internal waiting area with seats! Postscript I and my younger son came here again on December 13, 2018 from Niseko by a public bus. We first stored our luggage here and bought our express train tickets to Chitose Airport before we went to see the Otaru canal again. It ended up that we made good use of our 90 minutes stopover at Otaru!

A small train station. There does not appear to elevator that one can take from the ticketing gates to the train platforms. At the very least there was no signs for elevators and neither can we find it. We had to take our sleeping child in his stroller up the escalator. It wasn't too bad, but would not have been doable for someone woth wheelchair.

Glass is one of the specialty products of Otaru, and you can find many shops and museums that showcase the exquisite craftsmanship of glass making. Outside the station, you can enjoy a lovely view of the sea from a straight road that leads to the canal area. This is where you can find many historical buildings, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Temiya Line (ruins) is a historical and scenic attraction in Otaru. It is not far from the Otaru Station, and you can easily reach it walking towards the canal. It was the first railway in Hokkaido, built in 1880 to transport coal and goods from the port to the inland. I passed by this site many times and have never walked through it from one end to the other. On February 12, 2019, the little snow sculptures and lighting installations provided the incentives. I was even stopped by well-meaning people to try bits of a barbecue-hot cake!

Very calm place. If you go inside deeper, there are benches you can sit and enjoy the view and the calmness. It has a good straight and flat road, so it's also good to ride skateboard or longboard.

Lively and kind, small fish market just next to Otaru JR station. It is a bit pricy (uni&salmon roe don was 4,000 yen..) and Uni was not for the best season but overall worth experiencing at least once. Grill fish also has a good variety and much better in terms of price. Seems also well known for Japanese tourists.

Very cramped and vibrant seafood market. Super convenient location (beside Otaru Station). Can be overwhelming and confusing for 1st timers pertaining the ordering process. Just listen to the seafood stall owners for direction. Prices of seafood are very reasonable. Super fresh! A must-visit !

We took a day trip to Otaru from Sapporo to have seafood, and this was awesome. Sankaku is right next to the station which makes it very easy to visit, and also means it's very popular and busy. It was very crowded but we were still able to stop at two stalls. This stall was towards the end of the market (next to a place serving melon). Here we had snow crab and sake. The server was so kind and friendly and she spoke very good English, and was patient with our limited Japanese. The crab was delicious and cut up at the table. They were very busy and did forget my husbands kaisendon, but they didn't charge us for it. Next we went up to another stall towards the entrance (across from a shop with sliding doors). This one had a wait but was worth it. We ordered a Hanasaki crab and a kaisendon with roe and uni, as well as sake. While waiting the woman who helped us order commented on my Keychain and told me all about the beautiful bird of Hokkaido, the Shima Enaga. She was so sweet and kind! The Hanasaki crab is the best crab I've ever eaten. It was sweet and buttery and so fresh and meaty. I feel I could have eaten two crabs by myself! It is expensive but very worth the money. The university was smooth and creamy, with a soft touch of brine. And the roe were sweet and mild. We finished off by grabbing two slices of melon, which were as yummy as always! If you are in Otaru and looking for crab, this is an excellent spot!

Famed seafood market in Otaru. The market itself is situated on a hill and everything is on a hill on the inside. The market used to be a street like any other street but they have added roofing to it so the market is now fully indoors. They are plenty of stalls to purchase seafood from and there are also restaurants situated behind quite a few of the seafood stalls. The rule of thumb here is to go eat at the ones with a line because they'll provide much more affordable meals and will have fresh fish due to the high turnover. Some of the stalls will be very expensive for average food so don't fall for the tourist traps! The market itself is very easy to locate as it's a short walk from the Otaru JR station.

Obviously much smaller than Tsukiji, but still has a lot to offer. There are several smaller restaurants, and a plethora of seafood items to choose from along the storefronts. In Sapporo, crab is king. You will find almost every variety and most nearby restaurants will cook it for you fresh. If you like cantaloupe, there are plenty. I am a cantaloupe "junkie" and Sapporo by far has the best!

A must go place in Otaru. It's right next to the station so it's super convenient to grab some fresh seafood on rice for breakfast. It's hard to pick between the many restaurants but there's probably not a real wrong choice.

Small alleyway which is about max 40 to 50m long. While it may be small, it brings you through a myriad of fresh seafood which are reasonably priced! It’s literally a kaisendon heaven! Saw the longest queue place and decided to give it a try too. Be prepared for an hour wait, so just quickly place your name down on the queue list as the first to do!

Fresh seafood bowls! Very tasty and reasonable prices!! Sankaku market might not be big in size but packs with quality seafood, everything you ordered here are guaranteed to be very fresh and tasty!! We’ve order many dishes and the total price is still relatively low! I’m talking about giant spider crabs and Sea urchin here, not your normal fish bowl. The market was not too crowded during our visit but recommend to go before or after lunch to avoide longer queue time!

We visited Sankaku Market in the morning and was aiming for crabs feast. We had the king crab ( half BBQ and half steam) and hairy crab. Both are delicious but the best is the Uni Don rice bowl very fresh but come with quite expensive price tag. However, the Uni was the best I had have in Japan...so it worth the price tag. ;)

A very small seafood market serving fresh Hokkaido / Otaru seafood ranging from all kinds of crabs to oysters to clams to black cod fish, urchin and more. We tried the first stall on the right of the entrance and were given a discount as we were the first customer for the day. We had live King crab and oysters, both were awesome!!

It’s a lovely market where you get to see a wide array of seafood. The dishes were tasty and very fresh, however do expect tourist prices as the place is indeed very touristy. You can find other local restaurants with similar dishes at a fraction of the price.

Awesome market right by the train station in Otaru. Ten or so retail shops selling crabs live and frozen. And about 5 restaurants that cook fresh crabs and fish. Also serving raw seafood bowls. Probably a bit more expensive than other places in Otaru.

King crab (half boiled and half grilled), Ikura Salmon Don, kaisendon, tamagoyaki, grilled clam, uni ikuradon, grilled oysters. The main market at Otaru is located right outside the station. Despite not being a wholesale market that we went previously at Sapporo, the seafood sold here is competitive and we devour a king crab that is just below 3kg.

ATTN: Please exercise caution when visiting Sankaku Market, specifically, the first shop to the right of the entrance. My recent experience there raises concerns about their honesty. We specifically ordered fresh king crab, but what was served appeared to be frozen, a significant deviation from our selection. As someone with a deep appreciation and understanding of seafood, I can discern the nuances in flavor that distinguish fresh from frozen crab. Fresh crab meat usually carries a distinctive sweetness, unlike the saltier profile found in store-bought, frozen varieties. Regrettably, the crab served at the first business to the right failed to meet these expectations, leaving me quite disappointed. Based on this experience, I urge everyone to stay away from that establishment.

Yes, it’s a bit dated, but the aquarium is a lot of fun, particularly for families with kids. Don’t miss the outdoor sea animals exhibits, which were our favorites. You can buy buckets of fish pieces and feed them directly to the seals, which was the source of endless enjoyment and a couple near misses! Entry is ¥1500 for adults and ¥600 for kids. Parking is an extra ¥600. If you don’t have a car, the aquarium is accessible by public bus and there were a couple taxis waiting in the parking lot when we left.

The facilities are a little run down but the kids enjoyed it. There's a lot of neat displays and you can go down to the ocean side where you can feed seals and explore. The scenery of the location is beautiful.

It’s a fun place to visit if you are in Otaru. The penguin and dolphin show have a fixed schedule so do check the same before you drop by here.

Not the largest aquarium by any means but for the entrance fee it's well worth it. Still a decently wide range of exhibits and species on show, some of which i've not seen before despite having visiting quite a few aquariums. The dolphin show and particularly the penguin parade are the key attractions. Get up real close and personal as the terribly cute penguins waddle past you.

Fun little aquarium. We came here in April and had a lot of fun lioking at fish and animal shows (seals, walruses and penguins). There is also a small amusement park next to the aquarium too (own by the aquarium), so there are plenty to do. Highly recommend for family with kids. Parking is right in front of the aquarium but it's not free. Parking fee is 600 yen.

Try not to go during summer, it was burning and I had sunburnt after but I still had a very fun day to this aquarium. I'm not sure whether it's a weekday that's why we don't have to queue for ticket. The dolphin show was so cute and so was the sea-lion show. If I have the chance again, I'll visit the aquarium during winter!

Expect to take a taxi here if you're not driving, which is around $47 to-and-back from downtown Otaru There's a ferris wheel next to the aquarium, but it looks like it's too cold to operate in winter. Tickets for adults were 1000 yen and they had multiple language pamphlets ready for international visitors. One thing I did like about coming during winter was the silence in the halls. You can actually properly look at all the animal exhibits and examine them in peace. There's quite a few specimens here, but the biggest draw is the penguin walk and dolphin and seal show. I believe the last penguin walk is 2PM, but there's a dolphin and seal show shortly after. It's a good family spot, but probably not the best if you're traveling alone. There's a certain joy when a father can share in the delight of his children's first experience with animals, but it's something else when you're a lone adult looking at two seals, where one of them is clearly gaming the trainers for extra fish by refusing to do tricks until they tip you. Beautiful collection of venician glas. Some information is available in English, and a lot of effort was made to present the objects in an appealing way. The entrance fee is 800¥ and student discounts are available for 500¥. Very nice and friendly staff. On the second floor is a small costume-photo-studio that attracts many visitors but otherwise the atmosphere is great. On the fifths floor is a small cafe that is very charming. The whole building is air-conditioned. Only downside is, talking pictures is prohibited.

Fascinating villa if you are interested in local history as the rooms contain many beautiful antiques. Visited in winter so was very cold! Excellent meal afterwards, recommended.

We could not enter the place as it was closed. However, we could see the place with white snow and none visited the entrance. If I will visit Otaru again, I’d love to visit inside.

Nice place. Parking is limited unless prepared to walk a little. Entry fee is ¥200 per person. The flower beds are beautiful. There is a restaurant inside but we did not go.

Japanese styled mansion from the fruits of a herring empire . You cannot take photos inside but the garden area is very picturesque. I definitely recommend eating in the restaurant. Take your time and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the complex.

The architecture is beautiful, and this is a very relaxing place to be. Photography is not allowed inside the building, so you must visit to appreciate what's inside. There are wonderful ink artworks to be seen inside too. The cafe is a lovely place to relax with a nice view out. Definitely recommend

Love the history associated with this house. It’s beautifully kept though very cold in the winter as you have to take your shoes off and there’s no heating in the villa. The staff do give you extra socks to help keep your feet warm as you walk around. There’s a lot of old/original paintings and calligraphy inside that were very interesting to see. There’s a free parking lot next to the villa for visitors and it’s ¥1,100/adult or ¥550/child (6-12) for admission. The restaurant inside is very nice as well.

Garden entrance fee is ¥200 , we spend 20min to walk around the garden. Entering the million dollars villa itself need to pay another ¥1000 . restaurant & souvenir shop located on the main building.

Very nice but very cold inside since there is no heating. The cafe has some excellent drinks and food. The entry is a bit much for what you’re getting but understandable if it has to be kept intact.

I think the Herring Palace is best visit during winter.

Well, worth see the tradition of herring fishery from this region in this house. Many relics and very old pieces related from the fishery are in permanent exposition. Sadly the place don't have much to do and isn't foreign friendly (no explanation in English or other language besides Japanese) If you have a Japanese national to translate the explanations, better. This place have a simple but decent souvenir corner and unusual herring vacuum packed tasty food that is not easy find in any regular store outside Hokkaido. Outside the place, the view is gorgeous. Is located close to a lighthouse. I have been three times over past years and luckily in all sunny days. Staying on the cliff looking the region around (name: Shukutsu) really relax. From JR Otaru station, there is a small bus terminal. Buses heading to Otaru Aquarium are the ones to go to this herring house and the light house. From the Otaru Aquarium final bus stop, walk only 10 minutes.

Bus ride from town to the museum and not very well signposted. Lot of old trains so if you're a historical train buff there's lots to see plus models. Worth the entrance fee. Needs at least an hour.

Amazing collection of historical steam trains. They even have free rides within area. Definitely worth to visit. Family and small children friendly.

Sheldon Cooper will approve of this place. Everything about train, the types of engines, history of japan railway system and real life train models. If you are going to the museum, do plan ahead to take the coal-powered engine train ride (limited timings), you can't find such an experience around anymore. There are rows of trains outside the museum which showcases many old trains and you can actually walk inside the cabins. Nothing particularly interesting but kind of cool seeing the trains of the past.

Regular museum... more dedicated to the local locomotive history... Its a pity that I came during a season when some trains n carriages are under storage. Its really good place for bringing the children.. to let out their boundless energy. There is a small planetarium which offers 30 min shows. Second floor, a science corner. But please make sure, u came here by car or at least a rental. There is NO nearest bus stop and u may need to call a taxi for tripback home. At this time of writing.. an adult ticket for the whole premises cost 500 yen.

I have been there at morning while the museum just opened. There are many vintage classic trains in museums. Which presents the historic of Japan rail since 1880. Interesting train models and map shows inside museums, real train 🚂 is come out from end of Apr to mid autumn of the year. Today I get on a real classic train 🚂 that is the first ride of the year2019. Awesome experience to see that steam train slowly running out from the hub house. 🥰

Excellent museum about the history of the rail industry in Otaru - coupled with an actual steam locomotive on display within the museum! Pity the many other trains stored outside the museum were all wrapped up for winter. Minor plus point is the 2nd floor science exhibits which were old but well designed for kids.

Wonderful museum at the old railway station with a turntable plenty of train history including some of the oldest trains in Japan with a specialty focus on snow plough trains.
