It's a genuinely unique experience. The museum has recent year lanterns and provides full details about Nebuta history. Even if you didn't catch the Nebuta festival, they show a 10-minute show every 30 minutes. The entrance fee is 620 yen (2023 Oct)

Good to visit when you are in Aomori . Extensive art done with bamboo and wired frames papered in 3D . The entrance fee is 620 yen for each adult, and you can spend about 2 hrs to admire the artwork. They also activities for the guests to take part .

Really different vibe inside the museum, really enjoyed every minute here. The Nebuta statues are so intriguing with interesting facial expressions and stories to tell. If you visit around 11:00, 13:00 or 15:00 you can witness a small performance too. The workshops are not on at the moment due to Covid.

Unique architecture from the outside. Impressive displays inside. The floats on display change every year so you get to see different floats depending on which year you go. There’s a section on Nebuta Festival’s history but it’s in Japanese. One can appreciate the photos though and see how the festival has grown.

It was great to know more about Nebuta History and begin. I never knew Nebuta celebration before I stepped into this museum. The creation and lantern does give me a whole new level of experience and creations are so nice. Amazing stunning.

We ended up here half by accident while making our way to A factory and it was totally worth it. A great display of the floats of the Nebuta festival that are amazing pieces of art. I would say the top site to visit in Aomori if you cannot go to the festival itself.

Well curated, maintained and affordable to visit! Why would you NOT stop into this place while in Aomori!? See the famous floats used in the parades of past years, get up close and personal with the inner workings and read about the creators/sculptors and past winners. Their shop isn't to be missed, you can easily spend 1-2 hours here if time allows. It's a large "open warehouse" style museum, great for kids to aw at the wonder of these hand created floats. It was a perfect stop for our all too short day in Aomori.

Absolutely fell in love with this form of art, I was very excited to visit this place, and words nor photos can truly capture how I felt looking at these mind blowing works of art. I felt so drawn into these, I’d imagine it’s what a mosquito feels like as the glow of a bug zapper draws it in. The museum is spacious in terms of available space to walk around the main floats, with high ceilings and perfect dimmed lighting, it provides these lantern sculptures a real nice space to truly shine. It seemed like most visitors walked through it in less than an hour, but I easily spent 2 and a half hours walking around. Not just for the chance to try and capture what I was seeing in photo and video, but just simply admiring the detail and craftsmanship of the art. The staff are kind as well, eager to capture a photo of you with the floats of you want or even share a little history about the festival, art form, etc. One lady was cool enough to not only share details about the art and the work one of the artists was doing in a studio beneath the entrance stage, but she even gifted me some of the paper used in making these. I listened carefully, gave her my undivided attention as she was clearly pouring her heart out about the love she had for this work, but I understood nothing she said from the words she spoke, but sometimes you can understand someone by just how they talk with their gestures, and it all made perfect sense, I think 😅 Two take aways, one was I want to now desperately make my own, and it seems very doable, but I won’t know where to put it. And two, I want to not only attend this festival next summer, but I want to participate in it if possible. I don’t know how, but I’ll find a way. Love this place, love the art, love Aomori, want to move here and raise a family of Nebuta craftsman and sleep under the warm glow of these magical lanterns.

This museum is just 3-4 min walk from aaomori station. We paid around 1500yen ticket which includes other two museum including this.. This museum is super amazing which had huge collection of 3D floats which are used in aaomori traditional matsuri event.. great work of art 🥰😍😍

A great place to visit if you aren't able to see the Nebuta festival itself. This museum gives you a chance to view the floats up close and really take in all of the details. Photos don't do justice to how enormous and complex they are.

A love letter to the nebuta festival. Beautiful exhibit and they put on a show a few times per day. Worth stopping by if you you're on your way through Aomori.

Fabulous displays of the Nebuta sculptures. There are mixed language short movies to explain the history. Great photo opportunities. Good for those of us not lucky enough to get tickets for the festival.

While my shipmates were visiting this place, so why not visit this place and meet with them. It did charge an admission fee but not too expensive. Inside had some drum playing for visitor. Several amazing float or that may be some other name. Good experience. The Apple juice that they sell near the entrance was very sweet.

I think I don't need to say anything about it. It's a must go to appreciate the art and culture that's been kept for hundreds of years. Just share a couple of the pictures taken. Come and see it for yourself and you'll be amazed at the persistence of the Japanese to pass on their valued traditions from generation to generation. Valuable culture is never lost but destroyed.

Absolute must visit for anyone coming to Aomori. The intricate artwork took my breath away. I was teleported to those ancient mythological times while marvelling at the magnificent craftsmanship. If there is only one thing one must not fail to visit in Aomori, it is this place. Hands down!

Fun and great museum about "big illuminated paper lanterns". It's showcasing the history of the nebuta festival and their floats. There is also a movie showing about the last festival. It has a great merchandise shop with nebuta merch, shirts and other aomori specialities. I recommend going there when you are also visiting the A-Factory or the ASPAM. It's like 2min away from the aomori station. Apparently you can also buy a ticket set with Museum, ASPAM and the ship museum.

A really cool experience to get to see these up close! Not a lot of descriptions or things in English to read but just being right next to the floats and seeing the details is amazing.

A must stop during your time in Aomori as it's very close the train station. A small museum but with huge impact about the cultural significance of this art form. Entry and ticketing is easy and there is usually no wait. Try to catch one of the live performances if your schedule allows.

Must visit musuem with the famous nebuta floats. It's not a big museum, but you can view a few of the larger floats and they are massively impressive. Definitely something to visit, not expensive, doesn't take long and right next to the station.

This museum showcases the Nebuta festival paper floats that are paraded around Aomori prefecture every year. When people think of Aomori, they think of Apples, and these beautiful floats. They depict stories and fables from Japanese folklore, and are extremely vibrant, colourful and intricate. It is a must see if you are in the area, and it is also very affordable. There are also periodical demonstrations of the music and dancing that would accompany the floats in the festival.

A no-brainer to visit if you're in Aomori. It's right next to the A-FACTORY and very close to the JR station. Showcases the history of the festival in Aomori and has a number of full-size floats from previous festivals on display. A unique experience and definitely well worth the admission fee.

Lots to see. Highly educational, and very much worth the travel! Take time to read the historical explanations. Go into the huts and buildings first. You'll need at least 3 hours (still not quite enough) to visit much of what is available inside and outside. Children 8 years and older will have fun seeing and learning. They also have inexpensive crafts to make, with supervision provided, in a multipurpose crafting room! Excellent historical displays (an element of exhibition we've found to be common in Japan).

Get to know more about Japanese society during the Jomon period by visiting this place. If you have time, join the class for making Jomon artwork.

The open field museum with the historical architecture. I went there on summer, so it’s quite hot for the open field, recommended to go on spring or autumn. Rather than the open field, I also experienced making mini sculpture in the workshop , which I spend around 1 hours and pay around 500 yen. The best experience I’ve ever got. But the staff speaks only Japanese, so it might be not so convenient for foreigners. The admission fee is 410 yen. You also can enjoy chestnut ice cream in the cafeteria in the museum.

Go here!!! Along with an informative museum indoors explaining Jomon life,the expansive outdoor section includes replicas of structures that you can actually go inside! They even provide free rental rain boots and umbrellas for snowy/rainy days. It would be easy to spend a few hours here. Note: the cafe now closes at 2PM because of corona.

Definitely worth the money. A lot of really cool pieces of history. You are able to go into all the recreated buildings outside. Overall a very nice place to spend a couple hours and learn some history!

Although the site is a little remote from downtown, it is still worth a bus trip over. This may possibly be the earliest mankind civilization on Earth. Scientists are still verifying if this ancient culture consider a true society. Very educational spot, please allocate at least two hours to take a closer tour.

Would recommend this site for people who would like to know about the Jomon Period - went there on the beginning of January and it was full of snow. You can also borrow the snow/rain boots for free before going out on the field. All the exhibitions are bilingual and it is easy to follow through.

This site showcases Jomon period and displays buildings and artifacts that were found in the area. If you're interesting in history I highly recommend this place! They have an outdoor area which shows the recreated buildings and some artifacts that were found. In the indoor area they showcase more artifacts that date back to as far as 5000 BCE that are in pretty good shape. They also show the staff building up a jar from fragments which shows the amount of works that goes into creating the exhibits. There's on site parking as well as a cafe.

This place is incredible if you have an interest in early civilization, anthropology, or history. While the structures are reconstructions. They offer an insight into life in a more primate time. You can walk around the site and look at the buildings or go inside and look at the artifacts. I spent about 3 hours here quite easily.

Had no idea what this place was and discovered it while walking around Aomori, really glad I found it the assortment of souvenir shops, and the viewing platform all go nicely together, though it might have just been timing but I found it to be really quiet inside, not a lot of people around, could be a seasonal attraction as well. We'll worth checking out the viewing deck as it offers a great view of the surrounding area, and I'm told on really clear days you can even catch a glimpse of Hokkaido. Also check out the stall on ground floor, the lady making the mini donuts, they are nice snack

This place is a perfect spot to explore from. Little gift shops inside with helpful tourism office upstairs. It's a short walk to the Nebuta museum, the apple focused A-Factory (pick up a huge delicious apple for not a lot), plus a lot of artwork dotted around the boardwalk. And the rest of Aomori is easily accessible on foot. There's motorcycle parking to the right (as you look at the building), it's a reserved area in front of the pay car park, it's free too. Coin lockers for storing your gear are on the left hand side of the building (the entrance nearest the bus park) and are very reasonably priced.

This is the tourist information center for the prefecture. It has interesting information on the history of the area, including some of the Jomon architectural sites. It also has a kids exploration area and some local craft stores.

The PamPam apple pie here is freshly made and baked. The apple pie tastes amazingly delicious right out of the oven. Be careful, it’s hot!

The building is backed full of apple omiyage (souvenirs). I recommend getting a freshly baked apple pastry and drinking an apple latte. You will have to pay to go all the way up to the top of the building, recommend time to do this is during sunset for a lovely view. From the top you get a great view of city. If you have time to kill I would say it's worth your while. Also the building is apparently not a giant triangle but a giant A for Aomori

Great view at the observation deck. You can shop for souvenirs and there is a lot of apple theme products since Aomori is the prefacture that produces the most apple in Japan.

There were stalls and stores selling local specialties. Aomori is famous for apples so you will find a lot of apple based products. There was a small shop selling ramen at a great price that was above average. You can buy tickets to go up to an observation deck.

Many souvenir stores at the first level. Panoramic deck at the top is the highlight especially during clear skies. You can see the ocean till the mountains and view is stunning. Ticket is quite cheap (less than 600 yen iirc) so honestly worth going on a good day!

This is one of the must visit place in Aomori city, where you can get to buy all of Aomori prefecture's local produce, such as their famous Aomori apples and fruits, Nihonshu (Sake), as well as Aomori souvenirs. There is also a convention centre on the 2nd floor where there are DIY experience that you can participate in =) There is also a restaurant on the 10th floor and an observatory on the the 13th floor where you can overlook the whole of Aomori city =) as well as a bar on the top 14th floor =)

Pay a small fee and go up to the 13th floor to watch the sunset and have a nice view of Aomori . Recommended.

It has some souvenir shops, but most were closed when we visited. Nice viewing deck on top that's worth checking out

Only spent a day here. First day rainy. Visited the Apple cider factory and tasted 6 of the 8 types available - tasty. Also bought a bottle of award winning cider and local red/green apples - crunchy, sweet and juicy! Second day morning, beautiful sunshine but still very chilly. Walk along the bay to enjoy the scenery and also shopping street which is rather quiet. Also look see at the local market with many seafood. Small town and less vibrant than Sendai but still lovely visit.

It's a good place for tourists to visit with local goods and specialties stores on the first floor. Lots of seafood and fruit based prosucra for sale. On the second floor is the tourist center with a large seating area overlooking the sea and bridge. Unfortunately, the tourist desk is closed at the moment. The freshly baked apple pie shop is a must try in the morning. Both the apple pie as well as the apple turnover are amazing!

It was a really nice ride from Misawa to Amouri. This pyramid style building had 13 floors with various shopping and a restaurant. We did the observation floor to see all of Amouri, and the sites of the ocean were beautiful. I'm glad we came nice

This is a good place to go for all of your Aomori snacks. They have all the apple snacks, fresh apples, plus a lunch counter. For foreign tourists, you might be interested in the kimono sale they had. Great old kimono that many Japanese may not wear anymore. I don't know if this was just the day our cruise was in or if they have this everyday.

Impressive building, great special exhibit on contemporary artist Yoshimoto Nara who grew up in region. They recreated one of his favorite American music hole in the wall bar. The permanent exhibits at about ¥500 are well worth it. The special exhibit was an extra 1500 but it was the majority of the museum space. We visited in winter and it was busy but not crowded. A little bit out of the city but there were always taxis and the parking was free. It would be better to come in summer when you can join it with the Jumon site a short walk away. Only one cafe, which always has a waiting list, see separate review of the 4 Cats cafe.

You can enjoy watching show but check the timings through their website! Kids friendly! Access: The museum is located next to the Kenritsu Bijutsukanmae bus stop (県立美術館前), a twenty minute, 280 yen bus ride from Aomori Station. It is also a five minute walk from the Sannai Maruyama Jomon Archaeological Site. Known for its exceptional architectural design. The ground under the museum was cut in a geometric style to resemble the trenches of the excavation area. Structure enveloped by white-painted bricks lands these trenches. The concave/convex trenches and white structure are interlocking but maintain spaces. Since opening in 2006, the Aomori Museum of Art with its goal of introducing the arts of Aomori to the world has collected and exhibited works from Aomori native artists such as Shiko Munakata, Shuji Terayama, Yoshitomo Nara, and Tohl Narita. 2022.08 Easily can spend half a day here at the museum, with a good collection of Yayoi Kusama and Yoshitomo Nara ! The cafe serves good lunch at reasonable price, plus Sannai Maruyama ruins is at walking distance, this can be a full day excursion in Aomori ~

Beautiful museum inside out! The architecture is elegant with the concept of simple white that blends with snow in the winter. The exhibitions are also very interesting. We came during the Yoshitomo Nara’s special exhibition, but be sure to check out the permanent collections they have here too!

Got nice paintings and photos galleries, but a but far from city. To shin aomori eki, it cost 1000jpy by cab. Need to walk around the museum, climb stairs and go down if you want to access to the big dog.

Went for the Nara Yoshitomo special exhibition that was at the museum and it was a wonderful experience. The museum is easy to get to from Aomori City and itself, an architectural piece to admire. Definitely worth a visit.

Photography is not allowed in most parts of the museum so it’s difficult to judge beforehand. If you are interested in modern art then this is at least a one time visit. I visited the regular section (no extra payment for the temporary display) and spend around an hour inside. The dog exhibit is probably the best one. In the winter, you can’t go out in the courtyard of the dog exhibit due to the snow. PS: You can get a discount at Sannai Maruyama site if you show this ticket.

Not the first time I’ve been here and won’t be the last. The permanent exhibition is nice and includes the famous dog. The special exhibit this time was about Hideki Anno and it was amazing!!

A well known long run Aori museum of art with the exhibit that change with a scheduled art exhibition all over the years. Went there on Feb and lucky to see the famous Aomori-ken ( White large dog statue) with the snow hat ontop of it ❄️👒 The vibe of this museum is very peaceful and calming your mind . Recommended☺️

I have visited the exhibition of Yoshitomo Nara. Very impressive.

I was out there in March 2019. I never made it inside. But it amazing to see from the outside. Day and night. It was creepy at night hearing the boat on the water sound. The area is beautiful too.

A shop that sell all things related with apple. Its very close to the station and worth a visit. I highly recommend to try the apple liquor, its not too strong or too sweet.

A short walk from Aomori station, this is a place for souvenirs and all things apple. Celebrating Aomori’s apples in the form of juices, cakes, jams, cider, ice cream, etc. You can also grab a burger or sit down over a coffee.

Not all things are good! Twisted roll - don't get this as it'll break your teeth! Photo not in order. #1 & #3- biscuit with seaweed topping.,have not opened it yet. #2 is the twisted roll - hard and bland. #4 - also have not opened yet. Just visiting and checking it out. よかったですね！ Lunch at the cafe at 2F was delicious provided lunch set. The shop located on ground floor is big you can buy souvenirs plus next to a harbour view. They have a beer corner area can enjoy ice-cream or french fries.

A large warehouse offering a local product of Aomori mainly apple and it goods such as yam , cookies , tea etc. There’re also a few restaurant inside this building. I tried fish hamburger and my dad tried beef burger and it’s turned out that the burger is quite great here😋

When in Aomori, everyone must come try their local Apples 🍎 🍏. As this is what they are known for. Apples everything! Jam, Juice, cakes, candy, ice cream, dried, cider and even beer. I’m apple out after my visit. There are a few restaurants inside where you can have lunch and relax.

Must visit place for souvenir and gelato lovers. There are cafes and places for supper. The gelato is popular with many Apple flavors.

Thanks to some comments on Google Maps, I was here for an apple gelato shop on the first floor, and it was so fresh and tasty. The gelato was a little chewy while offering a taste like eating a real apple. Absolutely must-try.

Just 1-2 min walk from Aomori station. Must visit place for local souvenirs with tax-free when purchase more than 5500 JPY. There are cafes and places for lunch inside. Don't miss the famous gelato and apple pie.

It's very well organized. A lot of products to buy back to give away for friends. A few restaurants and common area with tables and chairs. Also a proper café on 2nd floor for sweet and drinks.

A best souvenir shop in Aomori. Good location as it's next to Aomori station. There're various types of products from apple. Also you can use Yamato for sending the stuff you bought to your wish deatination in Japan with reasonable price.

Aomori is known for its apple production, and the A-Factory showcases this, offering hundreds of apple based products and souvenirs to buy. If you climb the stairs, you can try the cider tasting for around 800 yen. An interesting building in a convenient location.

A place where you can get all types of souvenirs that’s available in Aomori. It’s actually very very nice to walk around simply because the space is huge. I think prices are pretty reasonable as well and they have a huge selection of apple juices to snacks!

I went on Sunday morning (15 oct 2023) and it's quite long line but moving fast. You will get sticker that tell the time of departure round. My round is next 1 hour so I drove to the bridge and came back here. The view from ropeway is really beautiful. Orange leaves cover mountains.

The ropeway in the wintertime is also the lift for skiers and snowboarders which made the wait time extra long even though arriving at 9am when they opened. It is quite beautiful at the top and the snow monsters are a definite must see when visiting Hakkoda. We also visited during the weekend which probably is busier as well.

Overall a great experience. It runs every 20 minutes, 2,000 yen a person. There was already a lot of snow up at the mountain so dress warm. Great fall colors.

It was pretty empty when we were there. Literally had the entire place to ourselves. Very nice and clean gondola lifts up to the peak of the mountain which gave us a very beautiful views on top with the snow. It’s still early into the winter season and we were able to walk around comfortably. Nice pictures taken around as well.

visited first hakkoda ropeway sanroku station on 30.10.2023 we read 1hr queue we reached 9.30am bought tickets (¥2000pax) & scheduled for 10.30am so hang around a bit & take photos weather was good at bottom, as we reached top the fog or light clouds hang over so view was not great we walked the marsh, some boardwalk mostly muddy tracks still a nice morning outing 😎

I visited on a misty day, so unfortunately, I didn't get to enjoy the view. The cable car runs every 20 minutes, and for a round trip, it costs 2000 yen. Once you reach the top, you can opt for a short 30-minute to 1-hour hike. As for getting there, you can take a bus from Aomori station. On weekends, there are only three scheduled trips, and the bus can take a maximum of 55 passengers.

Amazing view of the valley during Autumn. Absolutely stunning. The best place to stand would be facing downwards and to the right(the side of the gate). The scenic view is mostly that way. 2k per head round trip every 20mins. Completely worth it. The roads leading up to the ropeway are majestic with red and yellow trees.

In the summer, you can ride the ropeway up to several loop trails. The scenery is beautiful and it is pretty neat to see the snow monsters without their snow! I am looking forward to returning in the winter to see how amazing the powder is!

Be prepared for the wind chill in the mountain and dress properly. Do check the weather condition before heading to the ropeway station as it could be suspended due to inclement weather.

Amazing access to one of the best backcountry ski areas in Japan.

Great back country access, lots of places to explore. There's no groomers, and you can get yourself in real trouble if you don't know what you're doing- not the place for beginners.

Beautiful place, my family wanted to see snow. It was really nice, with beautiful scenery. I took the JR bus.

Visit in spring time this year. Still have a bit of snow on the mountain top. JR Bus only a few per day and better to track the time table. Beautiful and not too busy.

Visited 25th October during autumn colours, and it was really pretty! The gondola ran every 15 mins when I visited, and the ride was pretty packed on both ways. Once you're up there's 2 routes you can hike, 30 min route and an hour route. When I went the route was already covered by thin cover of ice making it slippery at points so it took us longer. Best to have proper clothing and shoes if hiking, but also saw other groups just taking pictures close to the ropeway then taking the next one down. The round trip cost 2000 yen pp, and there's free parking on site.

The market is well-organized and easy to navigate. The fish is, of course, delicious! All of the vendors are really welcoming as well. Keep in mind, the price has increased (the ticket seller said since August 2022). 10 tickets is now 2,000 yen. Still, highly recommend for the experience!

A good place for eating good sashimi with reasonable price. The rice with raw fish (Nokkedon) can be made with my own. There was a ticket for sales with 2000 yens per 12 tickets. The ticket canbe used for fresh fish to make nokkedon. The rice was very good. Almost all shops had very good and fresh fish and seafoods. The taste was very good. Recommended this place.

Nice small fish market which a block and a half from a bigger morning fish and vegetable market. An interesting place of building your own seafood don. Tuna belly here is superb. There's seating areas where you take the bowl, pick up utensils and condiments then enjoy your food. Terrific and happy vibe from the vendors at this market.

The ticket prices has increased. 10 tickets is now 2,000 ans 5 tickets is 1,100 yen. It's more of an experience to make your own kaisen don when visiting Aomori and adding your own toppings so it's still worth it!

Tickets system was quite unique from others fresh seafood market around Japan (I have been in all region by used Jr pass for bullet trains for several years ago before Covid-19). Recommended the end corner with elderly gentleman shop, this is the only place I could get firm uni and it was my last stop too. If I knew at the beginning I would rather went directly to this elderly gentleman and spend 90% of my tickets.

There is a free water machine as well so you don't have to purchase a drink if you're okay with just water. Overall I think this is a great value for the money to get this fresh of sashimi.

I passed by Aomori Gyosai Center on a Saturday morning last October. I stayed in Aomori for two nights and believe me I wanted to stay longer. It was a few blocks away from my hotel. I wanted to go as early as possible and arrived at 7am. Everyone there was kind and it was a tough to decide which vendor to choose since all of the stalls had tasty looking seafood. I ended up getting a simple tamago, ikura, toro, chutoro, and uni-don with oyster. It was very tasty and one of my favorite breakfasts this trip. I also bought some Aomori apple cider which was great. I definitely want to visit more fish markets the next time I’m in Japan. Not a bad deal for 2000 yen plus it’s nice to support these small businesses.

First you proceed to get your bowl of rice (1 coupon) from a designated shop. You can also get miso soup (1 coupon, optional) from other shops. Some shops include seaweed while some had clams. With the bowl of rice, you then shop around for your sashimi and dishes. Each item cost about 1 to 2 coupons. My favourite shop is this (pictured). The saba (blue mackarel) from Hachinohe is the best. Unagi is good too. On my second visit, i literally spent all 10 coupons on the shop, and the lady included an extra slice of salmon. Appreciate the nice gesture.

We had a wonderful weekend. 1st time there and watching the dolphins show makes my kids so happy. They got mesmerized with lots of fish and everything in there. It was great experience going at the aquarium.

Our daughter wanted to visit an Aquarium while we were here. The exhibits were pretty good but felt quite sad for the sea turtles who were just sitting at the bottom of a barren tank. Unless they're injured and unable to survive in the wild it would be better to let them go free.

This place is a whole lot greater than Aquariums in the states. Sadly this is probably because the whole animal rights thing isn't quite as valued over here. The cages and tanks are super small for how many animals are inside but this makes for awesome viewing. Sad animals, happy customers.

This place gets 5 stars. Do not expect a large aquarium as we are in a more isolated part of Japan. Asamushi is worth the trip! There is a lot of animals to see and the dolphin show is short but very cool! For a small aquarium, it really does offer a lot.

Came in the late afternoon. Lots of stalls are about to pack up.

This place is an architectural failure. Hard to know where you are. Interior is tacky. Shops feel like you're in a cheap market although it's overpriced. No brand name stores. It closes too early. And not a lot of places to eat. It's a pretty depressing place
