At first, I thought this was man made because of a pillar-looking right at the center...haha I was wrong though...Upon inspection, it's a rock. Take photos all you want at this spot since this is one of the many falls along Oirase gorge.
This museum features an interesting ecological display and local photography. It has good service and the hot spring is wonderful. There are a lot of cute souvenirs to buy here.
Interesting place. Good coffee shop inside

Came here to start my Oirase gorge walk. Dropped my luggage in the coin locker (it was empty). The cafe sells apple pies, which is just okay for me because it’s very tart and the crust is very thin. Toilets are clean and modern with bidet. Ample parking. Took the JR bus from Aomori to get here and then back to Towada city. There’s some apple souvenirs sold inside as well.

Good stop if you're driving the Oriase gorge. Not really a museum but an adventure center for winter (snow shoe tours) and summer activities, and a store specializing in apple products and elegant (but expensive) moss terrariums. Lots of maps and hiking guides as well. There are some displays of the local flora and fauna and microscopes for the kids to examine moss up close. Did I mention the area is famous for moss? There are also apple snacks and a cafe next door.

Good stop for a coffee before your walk up the gorge. Apple pastries were yummy too, just pricy but that's expected for a place like this

Just general information about the area Oirase, not worth the visit but there is a bathroom you can use here free of charge. There is also a shop selling cakes and drinks

This is more of an information center than a museum, but it has some interesting ecological displays and local photography. It also seems like you can rent bikes from here to ride along the stream.

Tochikubo-183 Okuse, Towada, Aomori 034-0301, Japan
During the Golden Week holiday, despite the chilly weather conditions, many visitors flocked to Jogakurao Bridge. This bridge is a popular tourist attraction due to its stunning architecture and breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The structure spans over a wide river and is adorned with intricate designs that showcase the beauty of Japanese artistry. Visitors can enjoy strolling along the bridge while taking in picturesque scenery or relaxing by the tranquil waters below.
stopped by jogakura bridge on 29.10.2023
a high & impressive bridge and peak autumn colours in the valley..the side with setting sun especially beautiful.
the eastern side seemed just after peak.
we went back the next day to capture the bridge together with the valley ..morning sun not as soothing as glow from the seething sun
chefquak — Google review
I was not expecting anything special but I noticed cars had stopped along the span of the bridge to get out and take photos and then when I reach the other side out so many more people taking pictures. Once I got to my hotel, I looked it up on Wikipedia and found out the following information:
“Jōgakura Bridge (城ヶ倉大橋, Jōgakura-ōhashi) is a 360-meter-long (1,180 ft) deck arch bridge in the southern Hakkōda Mountains in the city of Aomori in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. It carries National Route 394 at a height of 122 meters (400 ft) above Jōgakura Creek. Located inside of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, the bridge is known as being a place for observing the area's scenic beauty as well as being the longest of its type in Japan.
The bridge is known as tourist destination because the panoramic views it affords of the Hakkōda Mountains in Towada-Hachimantai National Park. The Jōgakura Bridge becomes especially crowded with tourists when the surrounding Siebold's beech forests begin to change color during autumn.”
Walkway to see over the bride is closed, I'm amazed everything in the area is closed during peak season when everyone wants to see the fall colors. Aomori needs to do better.
There is a small parking lot where you can still have a bit of a view but it's barely worth the stop for a few pics.

城ヶ倉大橋, Kansuizawa Arakawa, Aomori, 030-0111, Japan
The Hasshoku Center is a popular market that offers a variety of local seafood, produce, and groceries. It boasts two restaurant areas, which draw in locals regularly. One of the standout features of this market is its huge wet fresh fish section where customers can rent charcoal grills to cook their purchases for up to two hours. While some vendors will prepare the fish for grilling, most require customers to request it beforehand. The other side of the market provides sauces and seasoning options if needed.
Truly one of the most comprehensive fish market I have visited in Japan. Much bigger than Kushiro fish market with more variety. Prices are not too touristy as well. Definitely worth the detour into Hachinohae just for a meal here.

My favorite place, sea-food, BBQ and Nihon-shu
Christian Gibert — Google review
Big market place with quite many choices! Be careful, not all vendors allow you to take a picture.
Will Hsiao — Google review
If you want to see rare fish caught by fishmongers, come here. Angler fish, puffer fish... Oysters, all cuts of bluefin tuna are sold and can be eaten fresh on the spot here. You can also order food and go to a bbq station at the end of the market to have your own bbq session. The vanilla gelato here is top-notch.

I was recommended to go by tourist office in Hachinohe . Nothing special to me and I choose the first restaurant to have a fresh sea food . I highly recommended you walk around first and decide which place is value for money . The little coffee shop inside serve great coffee WITJ apply pie only cost 500 yen and delicious !!
My uni/ikura/hotade don cost 3500yen , it was good but I waited more than 20 minutes.

A mix market with seafood, vegetables, tourist souvenirs, liquor, dry food market for local and tourist. Can buy the seafood or don to eat inside market with dining table. Provide a payable self service BBQ (JPY400/pax) to enjoy the seafood.
rebecca che — Google review
We went Sunday midday during Golden week. The place was absolutely buzzing. Every kind of seafood imaginable was there and surprisingly the wait times weren't that long. I am a big seafood fan and had it raw, grilled, and fried. All were excellent. The 100 yen bus from Hachinohe station is fast, cheap, and convenient. Just look for the bus done up in a seafood motif. My wife and I called it the squid bus.

Drove here weekday lunch hour. Not very crowded. Mostly locals around. We visited the BBQ place (shichirin mura) first to pay for a seat. We were given a green basket to put our purchased seafood around the market. 2 hour long eating/cooking period. Tongs, paper plates, salt&pepper shaker and chopsticks were provided. It was a little intimidating to buy the seafood because we had no idea what we were buying, except the obvious ones like shrimp and squid.
We spent about 5000 yen for around 10 shrimps, a platter of squid, 2 oysters, 2 scallops, some sort of fish. You can also purchase beer, drinks and rice at the counter. Very fun experience.
There are a few other japanese restaurants in the centre. As well as a dry market area selling general goods, souvenirs and toys. Toilets are extremely clean.
Amelda Lim — Google review
A huge wet fresh fish market. There's a cool twist to this one. You can rent a charcoal grill for 2 hours and cook whatever you buy. It's a little intimidating, most people get the grill then but fish but I recommend you buy some fish first.
Some vendors cut and prepare fish for the grill already but most do not. You need to tell them you'll be grilling it and they will prepare whatever you buy. You can also get sauces and seasoning from the other side of the market if you want. Things get very smokey in there very quickly.

Large fish market that has a BBQ place where you can cook your own seafood once bought at the stalls.
The BBQ cost 350yen per person and you get all the utensils you need . They use real charcoal as well. They also serve beer here.
At the stalls you can find any seafood imaginable at reasonable prices.
If you don't want to cook yourself there are about 6-7 restaurant's at the end of the market.
ken cheung — Google review
We went here on Wednesday when the main market was closed. We had the conveyor belt sushi which was awesome. Totally worth it. We came back the following day to look through the rest of the market. We had takoyaki, okonomiyaki, onigiri and mochi. It was an awesome experience. All the food is yummy. Lots of options to try and eat. There are restaurants and food court. Lots of places to sit. One of the places to sit had a cold water fountain. The seafood experience would be amazing. There is a barbecue area that we did not get to experience but would be awesome. We are staying downtown and were able to use the 200 yen hassoku shuttle. If you eat, you need to go here. My best advice is make sure you are hungry when you go.

Kansai-22-2 Kawaragi, Hachinohe, Aomori 039-1161, Japan
The Towada Art Center is an avant-garde museum showcasing contemporary art and featuring quirky outdoor installations, as well as a complex of galleries. It's a great family-friendly destination in the area, with impressive blue LED light displays during winter that need to be seen in person for full appreciation. The museum hosts diverse artists from around the globe, offering amusing works for those who enjoy humorous art pieces. However, public transportation may not be very convenient or time-efficient; driving oneself would be more ideal.
What a great way to spend an afternoon. Visiting is a thought provoking, tactile, auditory, and visual experience that will capture your imagination. I left with a new appreciation for modern art. Permanent and special exhibits were simply amazing as is the public art surrounding the museum. There are surprises around every corner. In true Japanese style the hospitality was top notch. Parking is validated with admission and located a few blocks away. If you’re planning a trip to Aomori I definitely recommend planning a couple hours to visit. Leave the young kids at home, this one’s for grown ups.

This place is great for the family, there aren’t a ton of awesome options in the area but this spot is worth the visit.
During the winter you can see the blue LED lights displays with works of art among them. The pictures don’t do it justice you must see them!
The museum itself is fun and there’s another one across the street you should check out too.

The Nebuta Museum WA RASSE showcases the colorful Nebuta festival parade floats and taiko drum displays with a historical context. The museum is conveniently located a few minutes walk from the Japan Railways Aomori train station.
Awesome modern museum that tells you the history of these traditional parades and floats. It's not very big but lots of detail and history. They have a few live shows and demonstrations per day. Check the time table so you can catch a show. Your ticket allows for re-entry.
Free lockers available on the first floor. Tickets can be purchased on the second floor.

Unique architecture from the outside. Impressive displays inside. The floats on display change every year so you get to see different floats depending on which year you go. There’s a section on Nebuta Festival’s history but it’s in Japanese. One can appreciate the photos though and see how the festival has grown.

We ended up here half by accident while making our way to A factory and it was totally worth it. A great display of the floats of the Nebuta festival that are amazing pieces of art. I would say the top site to visit in Aomori if you cannot go to the festival itself.

Well curated, maintained and affordable to visit! Why would you NOT stop into this place while in Aomori!? See the famous floats used in the parades of past years, get up close and personal with the inner workings and read about the creators/sculptors and past winners. Their shop isn't to be missed, you can easily spend 1-2 hours here if time allows. It's a large "open warehouse" style museum, great for kids to aw at the wonder of these hand created floats. It was a perfect stop for our all too short day in Aomori.
Brittany Sharpe — Google review
Absolutely fell in love with this form of art, I was very excited to visit this place, and words nor photos can truly capture how I felt looking at these mind blowing works of art.
I felt so drawn into these, I’d imagine it’s what a mosquito feels like as the glow of a bug zapper draws it in.
The museum is spacious in terms of available space to walk around the main floats, with high ceilings and perfect dimmed lighting, it provides these lantern sculptures a real nice space to truly shine.
It seemed like most visitors walked through it in less than an hour, but I easily spent 2 and a half hours walking around. Not just for the chance to try and capture what I was seeing in photo and video, but just simply admiring the detail and craftsmanship of the art.
The staff are kind as well, eager to capture a photo of you with the floats of you want or even share a little history about the festival, art form, etc. One lady was cool enough to not only share details about the art and the work one of the artists was doing in a studio beneath the entrance stage, but she even gifted me some of the paper used in making these. I listened carefully, gave her my undivided attention as she was clearly pouring her heart out about the love she had for this work, but I understood nothing she said from the words she spoke, but sometimes you can understand someone by just how they talk with their gestures, and it all made perfect sense, I think 😅
Two take aways, one was I want to now desperately make my own, and it seems very doable, but I won’t know where to put it. And two, I want to not only attend this festival next summer, but I want to participate in it if possible. I don’t know how, but I’ll find a way.
Love this place, love the art, love Aomori, want to move here and raise a family of Nebuta craftsman and sleep under the warm glow of these magical lanterns.

I think I don't need to say anything about it. It's a must go to appreciate the art and culture that's been kept for hundreds of years. Just share a couple of the pictures taken. Come and see it for yourself and you'll be amazed at the persistence of the Japanese to pass on their valued traditions from generation to generation. Valuable culture is never lost but destroyed.

Fun and great museum about "big illuminated paper lanterns". It's showcasing the history of the nebuta festival and their floats. There is also a movie showing about the last festival.
It has a great merchandise shop with nebuta merch, shirts and other aomori specialities.
I recommend going there when you are also visiting the A-Factory or the ASPAM. It's like 2min away from the aomori station. Apparently you can also buy a ticket set with Museum, ASPAM and the ship museum.

This museum showcases the Nebuta festival paper floats that are paraded around Aomori prefecture every year.
When people think of Aomori, they think of Apples, and these beautiful floats. They depict stories and fables from Japanese folklore, and are extremely vibrant, colourful and intricate. It is a must see if you are in the area, and it is also very affordable.
There are also periodical demonstrations of the music and dancing that would accompany the floats in the festival.

A no-brainer to visit if you're in Aomori. It's right next to the A-FACTORY and very close to the JR station.

ASPAM is a triangular tourist attraction with a tourist info center, gift shops, dining options, and an observation deck. It's located close to Aomori Station and is a great place to buy souvenirs or take in the view. There are also regular events going on that you can check out.
Place to buy your souvenirs and gifts in Aomori. Must visit when in town. It also has a bakery for apple pie.

Had no idea what this place was and discovered it while walking around Aomori, really glad I found it the assortment of souvenir shops, and the viewing platform all go nicely together, though it might have just been timing but I found it to be really quiet inside, not a lot of people around, could be a seasonal attraction as well. We'll worth checking out the viewing deck as it offers a great view of the surrounding area, and I'm told on really clear days you can even catch a glimpse of Hokkaido.
Also check out the stall on ground floor, the lady making the mini donuts, they are nice snack
David Monteith — Google review
This place is a perfect spot to explore from. Little gift shops inside with helpful tourism office upstairs. It's a short walk to the Nebuta museum, the apple focused A-Factory (pick up a huge delicious apple for not a lot), plus a lot of artwork dotted around the boardwalk. And the rest of Aomori is easily accessible on foot.
There's motorcycle parking to the right (as you look at the building), it's a reserved area in front of the pay car park, it's free too.
Coin lockers for storing your gear are on the left hand side of the building (the entrance nearest the bus park) and are very reasonably priced.

The building is backed full of apple omiyage (souvenirs). I recommend getting a freshly baked apple pastry and drinking an apple latte. You will have to pay to go all the way up to the top of the building, recommend time to do this is during sunset for a lovely view. From the top you get a great view of city. If you have time to kill I would say it's worth your while. Also the building is apparently not a giant triangle but a giant A for Aomori

There were stalls and stores selling local specialties. Aomori is famous for apples so you will find a lot of apple based products. There was a small shop selling ramen at a great price that was above average. You can buy tickets to go up to an observation deck.

Only spent a day here. First day rainy. Visited the Apple cider factory and tasted 6 of the 8 types available - tasty. Also bought a bottle of award winning cider and local red/green apples - crunchy, sweet and juicy! Second day morning, beautiful sunshine but still very chilly. Walk along the bay to enjoy the scenery and also shopping street which is rather quiet. Also look see at the local market with many seafood. Small town and less vibrant than Sendai but still lovely visit.

I was out there in March 2019. I never made it inside. But it amazing to see from the outside. Day and night. It was creepy at night hearing the boat on the water sound. The area is beautiful too.

A really interesting museum civeri g the history of the Aomori to Hokkaido boat ferries. The entry is very cheap and the tour route takes you all over the ship.

This is an excellent museum but it is a shame most of it was in Japanese. But it was still interesting to walk through and see the inside workings of the ship, engine room and all

This ship demonstrates the real history for developing Hokkaido area in the past century. The big ferry loads the train and all sorts of supplies from Japan mainland across the straight to Hakodate. This is probably the most educational museum on our trip. The captain's deck is very fun to play for young kids. Almost the whole ship is open for tour. You may allocate more time to spend here than doing meaningless shopping.
Jason Hung — Google review
You can probably view it in 1h. Interesting but would be nice if there was more English translation. Scanned the qr code but it doesn't cover all the exhibits in detail.

Really nice museum that gives you an idea of Aomori's history. I especially enjoyed learning about the Seikan Tunnel (Shinkansen connection) and being able to go down into the train car and engine rooms. The bridge was also cool! Overall a great experience!
Jannis Anderson — Google review
A great, well-maintained museum that displays how people and cargo moved between Honshu and Hokkaido before the Seaikan Tunnel opened. One can visit nearly all areas of the ship, including the bridge, the captain's compartment and the engine room. In one of the lower decks, there are some rare rolling stock on display too.

Great museum ship. Spent two hours walking through the exhibits. Worth an afternoon.

What a pleasant surprise! Exploring the history of the Japanese railway ferry onboard was a fascinating experience. What sets it apart is the freedom to explore virtually every section of the ship, making for an immersive and educational visit.

Striking & atmospheric natural formations in volcanic rock along the Hotokegaura coast.
Really cool experience. You can walk and climb around the rock formations. Look for little crabs scuttling around by the water’s edge. The parking lot is a ten minute walk up and down stairs through the forest. Even on a rainy and very windy day, I still enjoyed it.
Kate Linsley — Google review
Ordinary flat rock plates and strangely standing rockes. You need to walk down to the place from the parking area. It takes 10 min to go and 16 min to come back. There was a wasps’ nest on the way, so be careful.

It was a very windy the day I visited. The trail down from parking lot to the spot is bit time consuming but worth your time. The rock formations are mesmerizing and amazing.

We drove from Misawa to Hotokegaura just this past weekend. The drive is absolutely beautiful, but very windy...so take precautions if you or someone traveling with you gets carsick easily! The water is absolutely a gorgeous emerald green color, and so clear that we could see lots of sea urchins and some star fish! Lots of tide pools with sea life to include hermit crabs. *Please note that the hike down and back up (from the parking lot down to the actual sea cliffs) is not for everyone. It can been a bit steep and treacherous for those who aren't stable on their feet. Be prepared to carry small children or have them in a carrier!
Osore-zan Bodai-ji Temple is a renowned Buddhist temple in Aomori, Japan. It is famous for its hot springs and sulfur mists, which create a mystical and powerful atmosphere that cannot be captured by pictures alone. The site offers a breathtaking view of boiling water under lava rocks and hot volcano steam erupting from every corner. This sacred place was founded by Jikaku Ennin, a great Buddhist master in the ninth century.
Absolutely wonderful experience. There are English pamphlets available, the staff are extremely helpful. The lady in the gift shop tried to answer my question about the prayer service, and upon realizing I misunderstood what she was said, she found me and led me to where I needed to be. She was so kind, and I really appreciate her.
Depending on how much you walk around and explore, it can take 2+hours. Absolutely breathtaking views of mountains and stark contrast with sulfur ponds. If you are there to learn and experience, you can gain a lot of insight.

This a must visit place in Aomori. Pictures cannot convey how beautiful, powerful and mystical this place is! It's an absolute love-love, would return if I could! It's gorgeous! Boiling water underneath lava rocks, hot volcano steam erupting from everywhere!! Awesome. It is open from 9am and the ticket is 500yen. It has free onsen for women upon entrance.

Osorezan is one of several major spiritual sites in Japan. The area is known as Fear Mountain, because of the landscape's similarities to descriptions of the Buddhist afterworld. I first visited here in 2017, on Obon. It was rainy, and the whole area was mist-shrouded during the visit, and it certainly leant to the atmosphere. At 500 yen, the time and the drive taken to reach this place is well worth it, however be mindful of those around you. This is a place worth seeing, but a place of deep spiritual significance to a majority of visitors. People come here to pray for lost family members, and the statues of Jizo, bear particular significance. The Jizo are often depicted carrying babies, and many toy offerings are laid at their feet, all of which are meant to be a form of prayer and hope for the renewal of the spirits of lost children.
William Mc — Google review
Not at all like other Temples. The hot sulfur springs bubbling up everywhere, the persistent smell of sulfur, and the lack of vegetation, gives this place an eerie atmosphere. Some Japanese believe you can meet your decreased ancestors here.
Steve Ford — Google review
This was a good experience but as a foreigner I probably did not fully appreciate the significance of this place.
Patrick — Google review
The cost is 500 yen per individual. It's a recommended destination to visit upon returning from Cape Oma. Please be aware that there is a pervasive odor of sulfuric acid in the area.
VEDIC MANTRA Sanatan Dharma — Google review
I visited Osorezan (Fear mountain) which is known as the entrance to afterlife. All around the temple area, a hot spring gushes out. Rocks and soils are oxidized and turned out yellow, and the smell of sulfur fills the area. Here was a very convincing as a place where the souls of the dead gather.
asako miyamoto — Google review
This place is very far to get to. I would recommend to drive. This area is rural, no convenient stores around or public transportation. I road tripped from Tokyo and back, all up took a week with over night stop overs along the way. Traveling north is a very scenic, the local vibe, people and area changes as you travel away from the city areas.
This temple is pretty much on the very end of the island just before Hokkaido.
I went there in autumn, when the fall colours start coming out. It’s a little chill at around 14-18degrees celsius.
The temple has a unexplainable energy/vibe, since also know as the “Scared mountain”
There is free hot spring, so don’t forget to bring a towel. The water is known to cleanse bad spirits.
There are many things to see including a “blood lake”, mysterious beetles, heaven & hell etc
The experience is far from describable.
Mari Okumura (Mari.O) — Google review
The terrain at Bodaiji is quite interesting. You should spare at least one hour to walk around the area. The sulfur smell is all around. If you have made your trip far enough to Shimokita, you should definitely add this place into your itinerary.
The Humble World Trotter — Google review
This place is one of the three holiest sites of Japan. It is founded in ninth century by great buddhist master Jikaku, En’nin. At the centre of Osorezan is Lake usori which is surrounded by eight peaks. The landscape represents a lotus flower which is a symbol of Lord Buddha. The name Jizo means mother earth. Just relax & do meditation in the nature.
Div — Google review
I'm glad I went here before people started flooding in. The smell of the sulfur gets stronger as you approach the place. Felt quiet and eerie, the stuffy atmosphere added to the experience.

I guess it’s just me. The family have visited all the 5 big islands of japan. Geographically, it seems to make sense to visit this tip of Honshu when I visited Aomori. Honestly, it’s a sleepy town but geographically, it’s iconic. There’s some structures erected by the locals for photo taking and of course, we heard about the oma tuna and there’s a statue of it at this location. Lots of souvenir shops and seafood stands or restaurants serving tuna and other seafood.
For me and my family, it’s something like we need to do after all these years and finally, today we made it. A tedious drive from Aomori city centre definitely which took us nearly 6 hours to and fro. But we felt that it’s worth it.
Alan Yeo — Google review
Northern most point on the main island of Honshu. Famous for Oma tuna or Oma maguro in Japanese. You can see the northern island of Hokkaido from here.
Jeff — Google review
If you have nothing else to do and have plenty of time you might enjoy it. But if you been in Japan for a while and seen the ocean. It’s not worth the drive. There is like 3 run down restaurants. And a decent view of a lighthouse. But it’s really windy and will take you 5 min to walk the area.
Update. I just realize this place is really out the way. It will take you like 2 hours from the “entrance” of the island to 2 more to get out. Honestly I will never come back here.
Richard Andrews — Google review
Sleepy little town with lots of seafood and fish restaurants. Other than that it's quite boring there. The stormy weather made it a little more interesting. No idea, what people like here so much... Is it because it is the northern most part of Honshu island???

Oma Town is the northernmost town of the main Honshu island of Japan. As it is a port town, it is famous for various seafood, but most importantly, their prized Bluefin Tuna, caught near the local waters. While I didn't spend much time here at the quaint town, missing on trying actual local tuna, it was a nice place to spend a few hours walking around and taking in the local sights.

The Hakodate Morning Market, also known as Asaichi, is a must-visit attraction in Hakodate. Located near the main train station, it opens daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This market mainly offers a variety of fresh fish and seafood. Despite Japan's love for fish, this market stands out as the first fish market visited by many due to its smaller and more approachable atmosphere compared to the bustling Tokyo markets.
The fresh crab was great. Lots of seafood.

It is a very tourist area with many interesting eats, buys and experiences. The only thing is many merchants will try to trap you into making purchases, which is understandable, but it makes it scary to browse their stands. Covid also took a toll, as the market is a lot less busy than before.
I went specifically to fish for the live squid, which they prepare in front of you! It was yummy.

I'm a big seafood guy. And the seafood here was really good. I honestly think it was better than tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, with a larger selection and fresher fish that are still swimming in the tanks.

February 11, 2024 In the middle of the long weekend, I went for breakfast and a walk a little before 7am. When I arrived, the first thing I wanted to do was go squid fishing! !
There wasn't much information and I was only watching the news about bad squid catches, so I didn't know if it was possible or not until I went there.
I went there and it was happening! !
On this day, it costs 1,200 yen per fish. There were several people in line since it started at 7am, but I didn't hesitate to get in line.
First time squid fishing. I came to Hakodate because I wanted to do this, so I'm really glad I did. I watched the people in line ahead of me fishing, understood how they were doing it, and took on the challenge. I just hooked it to Mimi, so I was able to set my aim and catch it in an instant. I had fresh squid prepared on the spot, and I bought a plastic cup of beer for 500 yen and went to the next table.
It's so delicious! !
The two of us were very satisfied, and when we happened to look next to us, we saw fresh shrimp dancing.
I have never eaten dancing shrimp before! !
So, I asked for this as well and they took care of it. Shrimp-chan appears in a pack because it bounces. Plump and sweet! ! The elasticity is amazing. This was amazing food.
I recommend it.
I was very satisfied eating the 500 yen rice bowl, eating melon after the meal, and eating the sea urchin on the shell. I want to go again! !

I was looking forward to going to this market because it's a famous market, but each store was really attracting people, asking things like, ``What are you looking for? Did you eat squid?'' I thought it was a market completely aimed at tourists, with many of the prices set on the high side. Ta. The Free Market, two stops from the station on the streetcar, is also used by locals and I thought the prices were reasonable. There was space for charcoal grilling and squid fishing, so we ate fresh and delicious seafood.

The local freshmarket sells fresh and dried seafood. There is also an activity that you can catch a living squid, and a chef will prepare it immediately for your raw meal. Even you can see its head is still moving.

Great seafood market which was across the road from our JR Inn hotel. Enjoyable scanning the different aisles of seafood. There are also fresh fruit stalls. The squid fishing and sashimi experience is popular but please be aware that they assign 28 tickets at a time and after that are sold out for a period of time (not sure exactly how long). So that can cause some frustration but I think if you wait around long enough it should be ok

Smaller than I expected. Very clean and organized with lots of vendors to choose from.
Hairy crab was a bit pricey, but had to get one to try. Slight regret not doing the “catch your own squid” game and having them sashimi it right there.
Overall lots of shops and options to choose from. Very fresh!

Goryōkaku Tower, standing at 107 meters tall, features an observatory offering stunning views of the star-shaped fort below and the surrounding mountains. The fortress was strategically designed to accommodate more gun turrets and minimize blind spots along its walls. Visitors can take a lift to the observation deck for panoramic vistas before exploring other nearby attractions such as Mount Hakodate, Hakodate Morning Market, and Onuma Quasi-National Park.

Although it is Goryokaku, it is impressive as a tower, and if you want to see Goryokaku, this is the best place to climb in terms of height! However, I did wonder if it was because there were not enough employees to replenish the commemorative medal vending machines on the upper floors of the tower, as they were often sold out even on weekends, even though there was a sign saying that they were popular, on the same floor. The soft serve ice cream we ate was pretty good, and we shared the ramune flavor with a few of us, and at the gelato shop in the middle of the tower, we shared the cherry and milk flavors, which were really delicious! Amazing view. Amazing food. Amazing location. One of the best sites I have been, during Sakura full blossom - Although a long line, it went really quickly.
Ate a squid that was much fresher than what you get on the main island. Also the Sakura icecream on top of the tower was amazing!

1000 Yen / adult was worth it.
At first I put my bag in the locker - which was too expensive (400 Yen) compared to other facilities.
The view is quite nice especially the seeing the park from above. There is also a small history about the park available in several languages, also in German.
If I had the choice between 2 observatory platforms, I would definitely choose Mt. Hakodate at night.

Goryokaku Tower is not a very high tower at 107 meters but the observation deck offers a spectacular view of Goryokaku park and its beautiful star-shaped fort completed in the year 1866.
Apart from the view, visitors will also find exhibits on Goryokaku stories from the observation deck. It was a pleasant experience overall and is recommended for anyone who is interested to learn more about the fortress.
There is also a souvenir shop at the entrance of the tower which sells locally produced food products such as seaweeds and other cooking ingredients.

The park where various flowers planted. When arrived there, only few trees with sakura flowers still blooming, but no time to get there. We got lucky to find one sakura tree near the parking lot when going back to the bus. The souvenir shop also sell various items from cakes, snacks, tshirts, etc. View from the tower is also nice. Goryokaku Fort, historic site, park blessed with nature. You can enjoy walking around through beautiful scenery in four seasons: Cherry blossoms in spring, green trees in summer, autumn leaves in fall and snow in winter. The observation floors of adjacent Goryokaku Tower command a sweeping view of the huge star-shaped fort.

Hakodate Goryokaku in late October is a scenic tourist destination that gives you the feeling of deepening autumn. At this time of year, the trees planted around Goryokaku are turning red, creating a beautiful scenery. In particular, the star-shaped territory seen from Goryokaku Tower and the autumn colors surrounding it fascinate visitors.
This historical site is a unique star-shaped fortress built at the end of the Edo period and played an important role in Japanese history. The exhibits inside the tower are highly praised for allowing you to learn about the history of Goryokaku in detail. However, some of the exhibits feel a little old-fashioned, and perhaps a more modern approach would have been more interesting, especially for younger generations.
We also recommend taking a walk around Goryokaku Park. The cool autumn breeze is pleasant, and the time spent in the park is very peaceful. However, there are limited souvenir shops and eateries for tourists, and visitors might enjoy more if there was a little more variety.
Overall, Goryokaku is a highly recommended place for history buffs, and the fall foliage only enhances its beauty. With modern approaches and updated facilities, we will be able to attract even more people.

Goryokaku Park, located in the center of Hakodate city, is a former 1800s fort that has been transformed into a picturesque park with picnic areas and an abundance of cherry blossom trees. The park's star-shaped design holds historical significance as it was the site of the final battle between the old Shogunate army and the newly formed government forces. Visitors can explore restored ancient buildings within its premises, such as the Hakodate Magistrate's Office.
Great big park in the shape of a five pointed star that is surrounded by a moat. The park is on the site of a former fortification and contains hundreds of cherry blossom trees that line the fortification walls and the park grounds. There is a beautiful old traditional Japanese style building in the center and two entrances to the park that are accessed by bridges over the moat. Great place to go for a walk or a bike ride or to just enjoy the cherry blossom in late April / early May.

A lovely and huge park with beautiful landscape and a serene lake. Goryokaku park is famous for the iconic star-shaped fort constructed in 1855. The Goryokaku tower is located just opposite the park and it offers a full view of the fort.
In the center of the park, there is a magistrate office which open for visits but admission fee is required. Overall it is a nice park to explore but it was rather crowded during my visit.

A beautiful park/fort for morning walks. There are lots of cherry trees and maple trees throughout the park. We went in the morning and the park was practically empty. Definitely a must-visit experience in Hakodate especially during cherry blossom blooms or in the fall. We went in the last week of April and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom and it looked absolutely gorgeous!!
There is also an observation deck near the entrance (Goryokaku tower) and I would recommend going up to get a great view of the fort as well as the surrounding city.
Would also recommend staying till after dark as they light up the space with lanterns.

Went to the park twice towards end of April during its full cherry blossom week(Once is just NOT enough!), words cannot describe its beauty…. What’s so unique and spectacular about the cherry blossom viewing experience at this place you can’t get elsewhere is that the layout of the park and the positioning of the cherry trees.
The park’s been built into a shape of 5 stars, and along each point of the star, there’re approx. 3 story tall mounted ridges where cherry trees are planted on top of the ridges as well as on the ground level underneath the ridges, so as you walk along the top of the ridges, you get a sense of being surrounded by cherry blossom 365 degrees above, on your eye level and below, a true 3D experience. Anyway, as I said, it’s an experience beyond words. So enjoy the photos!!

A must-visit around Toya lake area. The ropeway to the top of Usa mountain is for panoramic view of lake, ocean, and other mountains. The ropeway fee is 1,800 yen round trip, the cable leaves every 15 minutes. We went there in winter so it was really cold and windy on the top. Very nice scenery!
Pavinee — Google review
The ropeway is worth a visit to see Mount Usu. There are 2 observation decks, and a 1.1km track for those who wish to walk around the foot of Mount Yotei but the foot path is closed in winter. It is good for a 40 min to 1 hour visit, including taking the rope way up.

It has been renovated and is very beautiful.
There is a slope so wheelchairs and strollers can access it!
Garden furniture is lined up on the spacious terrace, and it's great to buy a drink at the attached cafe and relax while looking at the view. Hot cocoa 450 yen...Mountain price. But I guess it's okay because it's a large amount. Hot sandwiches and light snacks are also available.
You can walk to see the crater, but the stairs and uphill were quite tiring.
The new gondola has large windows so you can enjoy a lot of scenery! Recommended during the autumn leaves season!
Lots of souvenirs too.

I visited this beautiful place yesterday and I must say that it was truly magnificent, I’ve seen many places in Japan that have breath taking views and this place is up there with the best of them, in all fairness the views and scenery in Japan are all truly unique. When you first arrive you see this beautiful green area at the bottom of one of the mounts, there’s a big car park which will cost 500yen, you then make your way up to the cable car booking office and purchase your tickets at 750yen each then it’s climb aboard for the trip to the top. The further you climb the better the views, once at the top there’s a very big viewing platform and an area where you can maybe enjoy an ice cream whilst taking in the panoramic views. You then follow a trail that leads to another viewing area, be warned the steps up to the area are a tad bit gruelling-it took the wind out of my sails but when atop there are 270-degree views of the towns below, breath taking vistas on a beautiful clear day are second to none. I really hope that you take the opportunity to visit Mt Usu Ropeway Observatory I promise you that you’ll not be disappointed.

Beautiful views with the option to hike around the outer rim. You get lovely views coming out of the cable car, sit at the cafe to soak in said views. The cafe takes only cash.
It gets really sunny, bring hats for sun protection. After the cable car station, there is are steps to hike up to the volcano’s rim. And then another hike to go around the outer rim. The pathway isn’t stroller friendly although we did see a couple carry up their baby stroller (10/10 effort).
Payment for rope way tickets available via cash and credit card.

Mt.Usu Ropeway
Recreational tramway providing rides to elevated views of Lake Tōya & Mount Usu's volcanic crater. Breathtaking mountain/ lake toys / volcano view.
A 40-minute/70-minute drive (with toll/without toll) from Noboribetsu is a famous caldera, Lake Toya. The best view of the caldera is from the top of Mount Usu via the Usuzan Ropeway (¥1600) which leaves every 15 minutes. ¥500 for Parking. Though, it’s really only worth the trip if the weather is sunny. If it’s cloudy, give it a miss.
Lee CK — Google review
You either walk/hike up or by ropeway(cable car) 1800¥.2ways.
On mountain peak, there's a trail walk to see volcano crater or near ropeway station can see birdseye view of lake Toya.

For 1800 yen (2 way), you can take the cable car up to Mt Usu. The staff are friendly and able to speak in English abit. Do note of their last timings for cable car rides down the mountain (5.45pm on summer, 4.30pm on winter), otherwise you will get stuck!
Liau Yuan Wei — Google review
Pretty cool way to climb up the mountain time and energy-efficiently, obviously, but not the most reasonable cost-wise just as how other cablecars aren’t. Still quite worth it and you’ll get to see thins you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Noboribetsu Date Jidai Village is a historical theme park that focuses on the Edo period. Visitors can witness traditional performances, indulge in authentic food and engage in games that reflect the era. The park boasts replicas of buildings from the period and is located close to Noboribetsu Bear Park which can be reached by ropeway. As both parks close early, it is advisable to visit before heading over to the illuminated pathway in Jigokudani area.
Kids’ smile is the standard and indicator to see whether this is good. And this one is good.
Full of educational and fun purposes to understand Japan’s movement of its history and society. People love Japanese ninja and this is the place to understand more than just that.
Highly recommended.

The cat samurai "Nyan Mage" is cute. His stage play is a must-see for adults. It's very interesting. The audience at the venue was excited with laughter. I thought that other stages, not only children but also adults, could enjoy it unexpectedly. The Japanese garden built in the facility is wonderfully beautiful. Every place looks great. I hope there are more souvenirs from the popular "Nyan Mage". I think it's a shame that there are few types and numbers of them.

I didn’t read much about this place before I visited, so I was even more positively surprised about what they have here. You can spend a good 2-3 hours here if you watch all the shows they have in the different theaters - which I definitely recommend, especially the ninja one - while also getting a good idea of what houses and vendors looked like in the Edo period. I can also recommend all the little games and attractions!

Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura historical village. Here, you can experience about Edo-period (17th-19th century) Japan first-hand by visiting samurai homes, watching ninja performances, eating at an old-fashioned noodle restaurant, and many more historical experiences. One of the best ways to learn about something is to immerse all your senses in it, and both kids and adults will love learning about Japanese history and culture here.
Adults (junior high school students and above) 2900 yen, children (elementary school students) 1500 yen, infants (4 years old to preschoolers) 600 yen.

Ninja lovers must visit this village! I recommend to spend at least 4 hours here cuz there are many things to explore. There are 3 show and I like the ninja show the most. This village is beautiful and full of surprises. It's like reliving the stories of Japanese comic books. As an adult, I really enjoyed visiting this village. So much fun!

This is the Ninja Village which the tour bus took us to in Hokkaido. It is modelled to look like Japan in olden times. What I love about is that the people are dressed in cosplay and there are quite many little rooms showcasing paraphernalia of old. I was thrilled to purchase stuff like a (soft, bendable rubber) toy Ninja darts from there.
We were also amused that they had a house whereby the floors were inclined at abt 35° angle and visitors could attempt to walk through.
A highlight worth mentioning is the Ninja show. It was in a small theatre. Though the story was entirely in Japanese, at least they gave out a printed storyline in English to enlighten the audience first. The show was entertaining because it showed duels between Ninjas, stunts and contraptions. Very scenic place where you can take photos with the actors as well. Pity that the whole village closed early, at around 5pm. Otherwise, I would have bought more stuff like olden Japanese umbrellas etc.
Family Sng — Google review
A very fascinating place. We all enjoyed being there very much.
Suggestion: best if they can add English, Chinese and Korean subtitles in the shows so that non Japanese speaking audiences can enjoy better. Nevertheless, we can tell that the actors are well performed.

Good friendly service all round in the theme park but its entertainment value could definitely be improved. The attractions are a bit run down (even in a place that is supposed to be Edo period).
Check out timing of shows on their website in planning your trip. If you are keen on playing games, watching shows, probably 3 hours to catch 4 shows. They provide a summary of the plot prior to the show. The Ninja shows had too much dialogue. More action would have been appreciated. Was impressed by the energetic, friendly and entertaining Ippachi character at the Cultural show. He held the entire show together although he was actually not the main actor. Appreciated his engaging the crowds and having a photo session with the cast. A full dance instead of a 1 min dance by the beautiful kimono clad ladies who have made all the difference, Missed 1 show cos the other 3 failed to impress and I wasn't sure if it was worthwhile to wait.
The ninja maze and 'scary' goblin cat temple were fun but the other parts of the place really needs an increase in entertainment value. There are some pretty phototaking spots like the Japanese garden at the furthest point of the park and right at the centre of the park.

I’m a grown up but still had so much fun here. I spent 5 hours there but wished I could have stayed a bit longer.
The performances were entertaining. Knowing Japanese helps understand the story but there’s also cards at the entrance in multiple languages for you to read the plot of the show.
There are multiple ‘houses’ like Ninja Maze and Cat Ghost House which are fun short walks inside. Ninja Maze is highly recommended, especially for children.
The food and drinks inside are pretty good. A bit pricey but understandable.

The entrance to the park begins with climbing the stairs up the mountain -) Then you will find yourself in a building where you can buy a ticket. There is a souvenir shop around the cash register. One of the interesting products: a keychain in the shape of a bear’s head and with bear hair inside.
A ticket to the park includes a cable car ride. By the way, if you have things, you can leave them in the storage room (there are not many of them). Cameras can be found in the same building where tickets are purchased.
The park itself is very small. Prepare 100 yen coins, as you can buy food for the bears with them. The bears look healthy and cheerful. There is no feeling of decline, which is good. Crows catch food on the fly when you throw it to the bears :D Throwing it so that the yummy food goes to the bear and not the feathered thief is a separate entertainment -))
On the right side of the park you can see the rebuilt houses of the Ainu people. Go inside, climb into the boat (there are mini-museums inside the houses) and take a photo -)
The park is very small. We arrived at about 10:30 and leisurely walked around the entire park. We left at approximately 13:30. At the same time, we took pictures, stood looking at the volcanic lake in the crater of the volcano, fed the bears and ran for additional portions of goodies for them, walked around a mini-museum dedicated to bears, their life and small historical sketches with them.

I don’t know how famous or popular this place is. But it is still well maintained and I have seen a lot of kids here to learn and to experience the natural resources that Japan has.
Mostly here has local visitors. Most of the texts here are in Japanese without English. It seems a local attraction. We still can see the educational meaning of the natural resources without understanding the language. And that is how good Japan is.
I don’t see people cooking with the hot water here though.

Hell Valley" is a spectacular, appropriately named valley just above the town of Noboribetsu Onsen, which displays hot steam vents, sulfurous streams and other volcanic activity. It is a main source of Noboribetsu's hot spring waters. From the valley, there are attractive walking trails through the wooded hills above Noboribetsu. If you follow them for about 20 to 30 minutes, you will get to Oyunuma, a sulfurous pond with a surface temperature of 50 degrees Celsius and a smaller, even hotter, mud pond nearby. Stunning scenery!!

This was my first experience at one of these sites, the sulphur smell is the first thing to hit you as you get out of the car. We visited here when it was raining but the scenery was still really good and it was likely less crowded. You can see the mountain at low level viewpoints pretty much straight away as you enter the park. There are some walking trails around the park which we would recommend trying as you get to some higher viewpoints and the walks don’t take too long (each section was maybe 10-20mins), you also walk through some wooded and more scenic areas. If you are not interested in walking, you can drive to two other car parks using the same parking ticket (500yen). However, the one place you will need to walk to is the footbath (10-15min walk from the car park next to the lake), this is a popular spot where you can dip your feet into the hot water and there is also a good photo opportunity next to a small waterfall.

Assuming that you stay near by, wake up slightly earlier than the normal tourist and head over to this area for a quick walk around the Hell's valley where you wouldn't be bogged down by the waves of tourist and enjoy some peace and quiet.
1. We headed over at around 7am to the park, spent sometime around the main area which was pretty relaxing
2. Subsequently we drove up to another valley just about 7 minutes in which is also walkable (but will take you around 25-30 minutes)
Generally quite a nice place given our hotel was just beside it, very convenient.
If you're lucky you would be able to catch wild deer's grazing.

Unless u happened to be nearby, then this is a nice place to visit due to the scenic views else the travel and time taken just to see this is not worth it. Me thinks.
When I was here in early December, the views were magnificent as the place is partly covered with snow and gives me a sense of calmness and peaceful feeling. The weather was also nice to stroll along the guided path especially with light snowflakes falling on me.
Those who dun like the strong smell of sulphur, then have to skip this cos the smell is very very strong and, worse, if the wind directions is to wards you.

The resort features Disneyland-style attractions alongside its beautiful tree runs and stunning views. While not as large as some other resorts, Rusutsu offers plenty of tree areas to explore with easy options for beginners on all chairs.
Great resort, lots of tree runs, beautiful views on a nice day. Not too large but a lot of tree areas to explore. There are also easy options on all chairs for beginners.
Nice break from skiing in Niseko. Lifts were not busy, no wait, during my visit. I prefer this resort over skiing in Niseko.
That said, there is no night skiing here. Food options close just before the last lifts close so if you plan to eat you must do it during the day. Food options and bathrooms at each of the 3 main areas.

Great lunch spot, good place to meet people that don't ski/board, or got injured. Free gondola ride to East mountain.
Katsu curry for ¥1700

Epic Pow and terrain. Great views on clear days. No ski baskets for powder skis. 3/4 days I visited, half of mountain closed because they can't figure out how to work Gondola (or don't have enough staff?). Increasing price, but not investing in resort infrastructure.
Brian Tynan — Google review
Great tree and off piste skiing particularly when it’s been snowing.
You need to get a long gondola to connect west and east sections and the line to it can be very busy.
It’d be nice to have a cafe at the top of the runs to better enjoy the views.
Despite those things I’ll come again!

Great snow and value compared to Niseko. Many tree skiing options off Mt Isola.
Stuart Dunbar — Google review
We had so much fun! Good quality powder snow, trails are mostly very wide so less crowded. Almost all the lifts have covers to keep you warm and dry in the snow.
Heavenly area in Mt isola and the tree area in West mountain are gold

This would be considered Atla regarding old lodges and basic food. Fun mid skiing. Nothing real steep. Trees would be fun if powder but not very steep to rip.
Almost 2xs the cost of Niseko and not great anything. Really fun terrain. It is a fun resort but not Niseko. They do not have the easy facilities either. Limited food selections.

Older lifts and buildings but perfectly groomed and well designed slopes, 5 days in a row no waiting time at the lifts, as known from Hokkaido plenty of snow, most of the time the slopes were deserted ... perfect!!!
Diethard Rüger — Google review
The best day of skiing in my life! There are multiple runs for all abilities. The runs are well groomed & lots of snow around. The runs weren't crowded. Lifts were quite quick. Friendly staff around the mountain too.

Rusutsu Amusement Park is part of a vast resort that includes ski slopes, golf courses, and multiple hotels. It's an ideal winter escape for families, offering perfect powder snow and all-round comfort. Located just 90 minutes from New Chitose Airport, it's easily accessible for travelers. The amusement park features a mix of classic old rides and thrilling rollercoasters, making it a must-visit for families and adrenaline-seeking adults.
This amusement park is great!
The prices are fair, the attractions are maybe a little old, but still good and fun!
And the nature around is just great.
Come on, where do you have an amusement park with green mountains around? Definitely recommended! Especially for children.
Anja — Google review
For Onsen, it's not the best choice at Niseko, for skiing it's one of good choice.
Ricky Chan — Google review
It has both classic old rides and new trilling rollercoasters. A must visit for families, kids of all ages and grown-ups that want to have a shot of adrenaline. The plus is that the tickets includes a gondola pass up to the mountain to have access to the Mt Yootei and Lake Toya observatory deck.

Very nice and convenient. Perfect for skiing and having a good time. It’s about 12,000 yen to rent ski gear per day. They have a really nice onsen in the new building. Perfect for families :)

Awesome amusement park for the price. First time being on a stand-up roller-coaster, and the guy operating it let me go for another spin because no one was brave enough to get on. Be warned some of the roller-coaster throw you around quite a bit. I have a few bumps and bruises but definitely worth it.

The ice cream is so cute! I also recommend seeing the projections and the maze. Lots of fun!

Skied 2 days in March. Missed the fresh powder, but still had fun. Mountains skis larger than it is. Lots of good tree skiing. Nothing to extreme and the immediate trails are really gentle. The resort at the base is straight out of 1985, but in many ways it’s charming. A very family friendly mountain. 3 Gondolas, many covered 4 pack lifts. Cost about $50 a day. The Steamboat Lodge is far and away the best of the bunch. Lots of good mogul skiing. I would go back.
T P (PT613) — Google review
Good for older kids and adults but for families with children under 110cm there is no roller coasters to go on. Lots of rides shut down. Seems a bit old and run down. And water slide park is basic. If they only added a few more features it could be really nice. Entrance to swimming area is tiny and everyone gets stuck taking off and putting shoes on. Very inconvenient to for families with children.

Niseko Village is a picturesque mountain retreat offering a range of activities for visitors. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, guests can enjoy elegant accommodations, hot springs, and spas. The village is also home to a farm where visitors can interact with roaming birds and even witness the collection of massive freshly laid eggs. Beyond the village, Hokkaido hosts various snow and ice events for those seeking additional winter experiences.
Amazing powder snow, but public transports was less and restaurants will close too early, most of them are within 8 pm, only less will stay opened till 9 pm

(Visited as a ski resort in February) Awful lift service, completely unable to keep up with demand even in the off season and with several lifts closed for the entire duration of our 2 week visit. Queue for Niseko gondola from the Hilton was in excess of an hour, I shudder to think what it would be like to try and enjoy niseko while staying in village. Cannot comment on food or drink as I did not stay long enough in village to try them. The lifts themselves seemed ancient, I would judge the gondola design to originate from the 1970s and I only hope it holds up to modern safety standards.

Road trip to Niseko yesterday. Arrived at Hanazono at about 9am. A warm weather spell meant the snow was pretty wet and choppy. But the crowds!!! Too many people and not enough lifts! Looks like lifts have been decommissioned on Hirafu as well as a couple weren’t going and the pizza box to the top was out of action I suspect due to high winds. There is a new gondola and a super fancy hooded 6 seater at Hanazono though. But just too crowded to be enjoyable. I get that it’s Chinese New Year and this was probably the busiest time of year, but lift lines were just too long! First skied here in 2002 and had been back a couple of times since then but the secret is now definitely out. It is now getting too overdeveloped for the size of skiable area. Too many people and crowds waiting for lifts. I don’t think I’d need to ski at Niseko again unless there are new lifts put up or replaced.

Not a nice place for a snowboard beginner, green course too flat and had to get off the board all the time, while red course already too hard for me. Spent more time and distance on foot then on board. Again, I am a beginner and I suggest Annupuri instead, actually the rest of the slopes are more beginner snowboarders friendly than this one.
Of course skiier are fine here.
Frankie Li — Google review
It snowed every single day while we were here and it was so powdery! We were not used to how powdery it was and how smooth snowboarding was. When it came to the snow itself 10 out of 10! I will say renting a snowboard was a nightmare! Took about two hours, which was really disappointing. It is also super crowded so getting dinner takes about an hour or two.
The snow itself: 5 stars
Ski lifts: 3 stars. Took awhile and some of them close early.
Rentals: 1 star
Food/ village: 3 stars

In the quiet town,
Life flows gently,
under the watchful eye.
In simplicity, there's a beauty untold,
A story of life, quietly unfolds.
Where every breath is a song of the heart.
And from this essence, we never part.

I have almost completed 4 months working here as a lifty. Amazing terrain, location and snow, but jeez do these people NOT know how to run a resort! Everything from the fake village, to the utterly stupid base area gondolas are just for show, and really serve no purpose and a huge waste of money. Which would have been far better suited upgrading their 50 year old gondolas and chairs instead of making sure hotel guests did't have to walk 10 minutes to their overpriced restaurants. No beginner area infrastructure either. YTL do not care whatsoever about the staff who run this resort day to day and are only focused on having the cheapest labour no matter how mentally taxing the work is on the staff. With no staff benefits or discounts for any of the surrounding area. If you plan to come here for a working holiday, DON'T. I promise you will have a far better experience working at literally any other resort in Japan or overseas. These people only care about being flashy and attracting the rich instagram holidayers and have no love for the snow industry. This place shouldn't exist. YTL if you see this, maybe you should take your management team for a tour of literally any other more modern resort and then you might understand how stupid of an operation this is, and maybe have a little compassion for those that you "employ".

Fantastic place for a beginner. High quality services, top notch staff and a mountain suitable for everyone. Fluffiest snow, very comfortable to wipe out. Visit the place around January and February.
Niseko Mt. Resort Grand Hirafu Ski resort is a top-notch, all-inclusive ski destination that offers a range of activities and amenities for visitors. The resort boasts numerous shops, eateries, snow parks, and hiking trails for summer adventurers. On a perfect day, the snow conditions are excellent with no long lines to wait in. Renting equipment is an easy process thanks to the friendly staff who are always ready to lend a helping hand.
Best powder snow in Japan. The weather was not great on the day we got here. Many lifts were closed due to strong wind. However we still enjoyed the course. My advice is plan your play a head by checking weather n current lift status on website.

Powder and lots of of it! Worth a visit and feels like something everyone should experience if you're seeking deep lines of powder.
Things I wish I knew before: Runs are short compared to North America, restaurants are very crowded, rentals are okay, and there is a free shuttle that is available throughout the town. Lunch options on the hill are awesome and much better than most resorts in North America.

This ski resort deserves the world wide fame it gets, snow is amazing, views are amazing and the terrain is amazing. It is on the expensive side compared to other Japanese resorts but it’s the most famous so they charge what they want.
The little villages at the base are amazing but it’s way more expensive, food and drinks are double what you will pay in other places.
First day we were stuck in just HIrafu as the wind had the top of the mountain in hold.
Night riding was an incredible experience and it started snowing just as the sun went down.
Second day was 5-10cm of fresh snow and the riding was incredible. Hiked to the summit pf the resort and ride fresh lines on the return.
We can’t wait to come back to Niseko.

Very good location and nice setup. This is a great place for those who love skiing and snowboarding. They have areas with all kind of skill levels. Niseko area is known for one of the best ski resorts and this one won’t disappointed you. Parking can be difficult at times but you they have staff that help directing the traffic.

Amazing powder! Hirafu is the largest of the 4 mountains it seemed and the most to explore. Some trees. Still smaller than US mountains in UT, CO. It is fairly easy to navigate despite minimal signage. Often snowing (visibility can be tough momentarily if it's windy). Hirafu is connected to one other mountain in the set of 4, the other 2 are a 15 min drive. Above the tree line is accessed by a single lift with a small back at both Nisseko and Hirafu. It was easy on and off even for the kids (8, 10). Vegetarian food is limited even at Hirafu. Some food can sell out even on low volume days.
Nadine Wilches — Google review
Variety of groomed runs, tree sections all offer the best powder snow I've seen anywhere.
If the weather is kind to you, you'll wake up to a morning with the slopes coated by fresh snow, often more than 20cm and then the bright sun offers such spectacular views!
If the weather reminds you it's winter after all, the snow is still there in abundance, but it can get blustery at the mid-top mountain.
A winter wonderland!
Must visit place for all those enjoying skiing/snowboarding.

Excellent snow on a perfect day. No lines when I went, base camp restaurant has pretty good lunch food too.
Rental equipment staff were helpful and friendly.
The higher up lifts actually have windshields installed on the chairs which is surprisingly convenient too.

Powder snow and breathtaking sights make this ski resort amazing. Lots of people travel here because it has some of the best snow in the world.
A 5 hour pass / full day pass is recommended when you are able to ski well. It can also get particularly crowded on the beginner slope with people sitting around.
Royce Ho — Google review
Stunning resort with amazing skiing. A must, and the powder when it snowes is amazing Village is nice as well, with many shuttles going around (though they are very crowded). Would recommend staying on the hill or renting a car if you can because of the crowded buses.
Mackenzie Johnson — Google review
The slopes were amazing. Powder day was incredible.
Staff at the Annex rental store were lovely and so helpful (best to know some basic Japanese though, as some of the staff aren't English speakers).
Over-priced food for Japan at least at the cafe/ restaurant ($25 for a beef burger and wedges). Knowing this, buy food at the Lawson convenience store down the road from the Annex rental shop and save yourself heaps of money. Just don't go to the Lawson after a day of skiing (>6:00pm) and expect there to be food left. Massive lines and most of the food gone. Save yourself the trouble and buy it in the morning before you head up to the mountain.
Facilities are plentiful. Lots of info desks, toilets are easily accessible, lifts are very easy to catch, ski passes and rental stores are easily accessible/ easy to purchase on the day. Places are nicely heated and comfortable to rest in after a few hours of skiing/ snowboarding.
A few down sides. The place is absolutely overrun with tourists (specifically Aussies and Americans). I'm an Aussie so no prejudice here. Some of us can be a bit...much, especially when drunk, which is a frequent occurrence here. The problem is that the Japanese staff that operate the buses and convenience stores have to put up with this, day in and day out, so expect some staff to be snappy or even yell at you if you step out of line, even a smidge. I asked a bus driver in Japanese if the bus was going to a particular stop. He death stared me for about 3 seconds and suddenly started yelling at me, waving his arms around. He obviously wasn't having a good day. Not a big deal, just be prepared for it.
Some buses just don't arrive, are full of people and so you can't get on or in some cases, just don't stop in one rare case.
Overall, a great experience. Just tailor your expectations, so that you're not surprised by an ocean of tourists, lack of restaurants that don't require a reservation or angry bus drivers. Otherwise, an amazing time. (Take the gondola up to the green King run).

Excellent runs and good tree area. Many different runs has views of Mt. Yotei which is magnificent. You can easily spend few days just explore this area. The runs are super fun for snowboarders. The only bad thing is way too many people here. Nieseko area had been getting so popular that getting to lift is long wait. When we were here 6 years ago, it was so quiet. Big portion of beginners are at the lower area, I saw someone got ski over and broke her arm. It become a bit chaotic. This is the reason I gave this area 4 stars. If you are advance skiers/ riders, spending all your times in tress area, this is less of problem. But again, you still need to deal with insane amount of the people at lift.

Excellent snow condition, fresh powder everyday. A large variety of runs.
Good food.
The night session is super fun, it's not cold. Don't miss it!
My only complaint: stickers and magnets price are too high and only limited selections.

Even when the forecast calls for limited or no snow, there’s still powder to be found.
The hikes are amazing. Be sure the pack your beacon and ride with a friend, but you can’t beat the back country access.
The town itself leaves a lot to be desired. Impossible to get in anywhere without a reservation, so you really have to script your trip.
Very touristy, so if you’re looking to experience Japan, this is not your resort

Fabulous place for skiing and snowboarding! The gondola is amazing, great food, some shopping but mainly aimed at snowboarding and skiing. One little souvenir shop above a restaurant called Tozanken that was so popular the wait was up to 2 hours but highly recommend the wait! Had Christmas lunch there and it was delicious!

Excellent snow, great lift distribution and very nice restaurant!
BUT! Getting stuck in the brand new lift every time you try to go up the mountain is not acceptable. Writing this review, we are stuck since at least 20min. This 6 seater seems to have a lot of problems, expect to take at least 20 min to go up. This can ruin your transfer to Hirafu.

Super deluxe. Six person lift has heated seats. Geesh. The gondola is essentially a beginner lift (nothing wrong with that but rather unique).
Restaurant at the base is world class for ski resorts. You have to go to Vail or Aspen to find a more upscale joint.

Lake Shikotsu, located in southwestern Hokkaido, is a popular recreation area with stunning views of volcanoes. The lake never freezes even in the coldest winters and offers boating, fishing, and sightseeing. There are also hot springs to enjoy.
Was a nice day at Shikotsu Lake. Most of the Snow has melted away from the Winter. Nice view of Mount Eniwa from the Yamasen Railway Bridge 🌉
Was surprised to pay for parking. There's an attendee at the parking lot, to collect payment. 🅿️ use to be free!

Here hot springs ♨️♨️ is available nearby. At winter snow festival occasion is there in the month of FEBRUARY. THE MOUNTAIN S surrounded by the lake is volcanic velt. Nearby lots of park is located. You can enjoy with your friends and family. Hotels are available for night stay. Toilet is also available. Very clean place. Summer time boat facilities available. Lots of mountains are there. You can hike mountain also.
From Chitose station you can get route bus towards SHIKOTSU.
If you know driving and have international driving licence, you can rental a car accordingly. That will be cheaper.

Really beautiful lakes with a lot of hiking trails. When we got to the first observatory deck we couldn’t see anything due to the snow, but going down to the lake it cleared up (or maybe positions of the clouds). Very windy in the winter so dress warmly. Recommend at least doing a stop over here to check out the good view, old bridge, and informative visitor center.

The small town here sells snacks and good local dishes, perfect after a stroll around.
There are many parking available but during evenings when the snow festival is available, the parking lots can be crowded. So do come earlier for a spot.
There are many photo spots around the lake for some great photo shoot too.

We came on a late October sunny day. There was a Japanese style drum activity held near the lake. It attracted many local tourists to enjoy a relaxing and chill afternoon.
The fresh air, harmony vibe of the view, smell of BBQ, and rich taste of ice cream are all appealing to me. The only pity is the time we stayed wasn’t long enough. I’m hoping to visit the lake again soon and stay in the lakeside hot spring hotel next time.
