Mountains
Mount Tarumae is an active volcano located in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, known for its stunning views and popular hiking trail. The hike takes approximately one hour to reach the peak from the parking lot, with options for descent. Adequate water supply is essential as there are no refill stations along the way. Toilets are available at the parking area only. It's a great spot for a short hike, but visitors should wear proper hiking shoes due to slippery paths.
Amazing and rewarding views at the summit. Eerily quiet when you’re up that high, almost like you’re on Mars (in a cool way). The first part of the hike is mainly stair master in the forest but then it opens up to hiking up the mountain, which is all incline basically. Other hikers are friendly. Free parking lot.
Brandon — Google review
A relatively easy 30-40 minute hike from the parking lot to the top. Road to the station parking lot is quite a bad gravel one, but still doable on a motorcycle.

I'm reviewing one star for attention. You will see a great view and the hiking route at the top of the mountain!! However, PLEASE RE-CONSIDER if you have an injury on your knees. My wife found this mountain as a good place for beginners who looking for a safe hiking route, but all my family started to climb the mountain from a parking lot. and I found a warning sign that a bear may show up and the last time people saw it was FEB in 2023! Plus some stairs are too high! (height of your thighs or waist) They are not for elders who have issues with knees and chubby people. This level was almost climbing not hiking! Two of the 5 in my family members gave up in the middle of the mountain. It would take a little bit more than one hour to get to the top if you don't stop climbing. If you or your groups want to see just the view easily, I recommend Mountain Usu or Mountain Tenguyama in Otaru. There is a cable car(ropeway) so you can go to the top within 10mins. Mt Usu has a hiking route on the top so the group can separate and do whichever people want( watching the views or hiking). Mountain Tenguyama also has a bear sign. so It is just for viewing.

Lovely hike, not challenging at all. The views were really pretty! Definitely recommend!
Alexander Hagseth — Google review
We've been here in mid-september 2017. The climb is relatively short and not that hard. Once you leave the forest you can see the amazing view of lake Shikotsu and the ocean. The summit was very windy but the view of the huge lava dome was absolutely stunning and even scary. Drive carefully in the long unpaved road that reaches the parking lot. Allocate 3-4 hours for the trip, including spending time at the summit and walking around the rim.
Eyal Gur — Google review
A lovely hike from the parking lot up to the mountain. It takes roughly an hour to get up from the parking lot and you have several options to get back. From the top you get a stunning view. Bring enough water as there is no chance to get some from parking to the top. Toilets are available at the parking lot so better use them before you start your hike.
Stefan Hofer — Google review
Very easy to climb from the car park. Car park gets full in summer time in the weekend. So better be there earlier morning. Peak of East was very windy, you will need a jacket. Good things about Tarumae is There will be beautiful view of Lake Shiretoko all the way to the top. After exercise, recommendation is hot spring to Shiretoko and Marukoma. 1000jpy each but close for visitors by 15:00.
shinano m — Google review
Great short hike spot! We spent about 2.5hours for up and down including taking a rest few times on the way and top of the mountain. The parking area is quite limited so recommend to go early morning especially if you are going on the weekend. The path is very slippery so recommend to wear proper hike shoes.
Momoko Tachiyama — Google review
Awesome place!! The view is absolutely spectacular throughout the hike, once you get out of the forest. The visibility of the lava dome (and the horizon, shikotsu lake, etc) may vary, so check the weather! Please note it is super windy up there! Hiking shoes are not a must, but you definitely can't go via sandals or sliders. Wear a pair of decent sneakers at the least. I wore regular tennis shoes, and my mother in her 60s hiked in her bare feet almost all the way. We took our time going up, and it took us 2hrs in total -- from the seventh station trail head parking lot to the top where the path splits in two ways (we didn't go further), and back down. NOTE***There is one section of the trail covered with small basalt rocks, which make the trail very very slippery and difficult to gain solid footing -- especially on the way down. I wished I had brought a set of hiking poles for support. Please be careful!! And have fun!!!

Lake Utonai is a picturesque freshwater lake that boasts migratory swans, ducks and geese. It also has an observation tower by the shore for bird watching enthusiasts and photographers alike. The main building is beautiful with a cafe/gift shop providing food options for visitors. Clean bathrooms are conveniently located on site. Although snow may limit exploring, it still offers breathtaking scenery worth visiting for an entire day or more.
This lake is so enchanting. The water is so clear and quiet. There are some swan boats and kayaking that you could try there. The place is so cool and beautiful. The view of the red bridge is also nice. This is a good place for family picnics and friends hangouts, and even for couple dates.

If you love nature, and bird watching or photography, this is a great place to go. I could have spent a week here. If you're coming from the west and are concerned about bathrooms / food, don't be. It has a beautiful main building and a a cafe/gift shop. It also has an observation tower. There are plenty of incredibly clean bathrooms. We couldnt go too far because of snow, but had no trouble spending and entire day.

Tens of thousands of birds arrive during the migration season. Additionally, some individuals spend their time here without migrating, and can be observed throughout the year. Most of the area is frozen over in winter, but a certain number of them remain here, partly because they are feeding. (Translated by Google) I was told that Ainu folk music would be played in a space near a kotan on the shore of Lake Poroto, so I went around some of the kotan houses to kill time and wait. It was not a pure Ainu kotan, but an Ainu-style building based on modern architecture. Google Maps says ``traditional kotan,'' but strictly speaking, I think it would be more appropriate to call it ``non-traditional kotan'' or ``modern kotan.'' Architectural technology is changing day by day, so I think it would be good if kotan evolved to match modern life by combining tradition and modernity. Just as the Japanese people of today do not live in the same dug-out pillared buildings as in the Jomon period, the Ainu people of today do not live in the same thatched kotans as in the past. I was able to listen to the Ainu folk music performed by Mukkuri. I was moved by that unique shaking sound.

Kotan, the Ainu Village of Sapporo, is a museum and historical village that showcases the culture and lifestyle of the Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan. The village is located about 30 minutes by car from the center of Sapporo, and it is open every day of the year. During my visit to Kotan, I was able to learn about traditional Ainu homes, workshops, a forge, a museum, and a theater. I also witnessed demonstrations of Ainu dance, music, and singing. Kotan is a great place to learn more about Ainu culture and language and to experience the lifestyle of this unique people. It is also an excellent opportunity to relax and enjoy the beauty of Japanese nature. Here are some tips for your visit to Kotan: Plan to spend about 2 hours visiting the village. Wear comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking, especially if you plan to walk around Poroto Lake. Bring a bottle of water, as it can be hot in Kotan, although there are many shops with vending machines. If you do not speak Japanese, do not hesitate to ask the village guides for help, as they are fluent in English. I highly recommend visiting Kotan.

Marutoma Shokudo is an unpretentious cafe located by the harbor that specializes in serving delicious seafood rice bowls, with their surf clam curry being their standout dish. Despite being a hidden gem, its popularity among locals is evident through the long queues and positive reviews on TripAdvisor. However, visitors should come early as they don't take reservations and expect to wait in line.

Surf clam curry was too sweet and overpowering so I couldn't taste the clam. The meat chunks are tiny and they don't give you much. Kaisen don was average at best. I think this restaurant is overrated

I’ve heard that the shop always has a waiting line. Fortunately, when we visited there, there were no waiting people so we could smoothly go into the shop. The inside of the shop was almost full. We had to wait to order for around 15 minutes and wait again for serving but you can enjoy seeing what others ordered or side dishes arranged on the counter. Seafood rice bowl was covered with lots of shrimps, sea urchins, surf clams, salmon, salmon eggs, abalone, and two white fishes. Miso soup with great dashi soup was also nice! I will try rice curry with surf clam what were ordered by many customers.

Wai Ping Chow — Google review
I was told to go here on the recommendation of the guest house owner I stayed at last night. The hours were 5am-2pm, so I thought I would go there for lunch and just hang out and munch for bit while waiting for my ferry. The hanging out part was correct: when I got there, the line was out the door. I was waiting in line for almost 2 hours. Was the wait worth it? I don't know, I didn't try any of the other restaurants in the area. However, the dishes I had were some of the best I've ever tasted of their variety. When I finally got in, I realized why it was so crowded. This is a small place for locals, not designed to take the brunt of every tourist passing through tomakomai. I came to realize that this place has not yet completely sold out to the tourists: its definitely a still a place for the locals. Some of the dishes are dirt cheap (little fried fish for 50 yen apiece, meat shumai for 20 yen apiece, and that amazing red fish fillet for 200yen). Of course, the famous dishes are jacked up to the usual 1000-1300yen for the tourists. The host (who is also one of the chefs, everyone who works here also works the kitchen) sat me at a table, with space for 2. I saw 2 other customers waiting, so I insisted to move to the bar and sat down next to a very talkative grandma who would drunkenly shout her opinions about foreigners coming to Japan to me over the meal. It was very amusing. I ordered for about 3 people, and the lady took my order without flinching. Sakhalin surf clams, seafood donburi, and seafood yakisoba. I also got to see the stuff sitting in the glass case at the counter, and ordered that red fish that you see with fried eggplant on the side. To this day I have no idea what that fish is called, but it was the best damn saltwater fish I've had in years. The tiny bit of eggplant they cooked was also perfect: a little bit of batter, a little bit of sauce, and a lot of flavor. The first dish to come out were the clams, and they were amazing. They surprised me - they're sweeter than any seafood I've ever tasted, and I think the sweet taste comes naturally. It's no wonder those are a local specialty, and they use them in every seafood dish. The seafood don was pretty typical with the addition of some blue roe I've never seen before, really good raw shrimp, the Sakhalin surf clams, and a freshness I've only ever tasted at the hakodate seafood market and tsukiji fish market. It came with chopped... Pickles I think? The taste was a bit different than pickles so I'm not sure. A bit like sauerkraut. And miso soup. That miso soup was great, had some seaweed (the small fingery kind) and lots of savory ocean flavors. The seafood yakisoba was the best seafood yakisoba I've had, but also the first seafood yakisoba I've had. It definitely rivals the viet seafood fried noodles you can get for dirt cheap at viet stores in Milpitas, which is (and still is) hands down the best seafood fried noodle dish I've ever had. This one used a bit more onion, obviously used yakisoba noodles instead of the thinner Chinese style egg noodles, and many many clams. My god those clams are good. Did I mention the portions are huge compared to most places? Sorry for writing an epic: tldr sat next to a drunk grandma, had good seafood at a tiny restaurant. Would recommend.

Ramen restaurant
Noodle shop
Aji no Daio Sohonten is a popular spot known for being the birthplace of curry ramen. It's located between Chitose and Tomakomai, easily accessible from the airport by car. The establishment can get busy during meal times, but it's spacious with quick table turnover. Customers purchase meal tickets and exchange them with staff for their orders. The cheese curry ramen and deer gyoza are highly recommended dishes.
I got the cheese curry ramen, and the deer gyoza. All of it was delicious! I did burn my mouth, but it was worth it! I definitely recommend stopping and trying the delicious options here.

Soup Curry is a food famous in Hokkaido, but Aji no Daio also offers one of the most famous Curry Ramen versions. And I just happened to be driving by the honten main store in Tomakomai, Hokkaido! I ordered one of their popular options, a Cheese Curry Ramen for 950¥. The smell of the curry was quite evident and the cheese looked absolutely mouth-watering.The noodles were soft and the portion very reasonable, every ramen bite carrying the curry flavor. The curry broth itself was not simply just “watered down” curry, as it had plenty of meaty, rich taste. Since the soup was so strong, the cheese was simply not necessary and couldn’t really be distinguished. Unless you’re a huge curry lover, though, I found myself halfway through the ramen wanting to cut the taste with some rice or some veggies to lighten it up. Still, it was worth having if you’re in town.

Aji-no-daio is a fun place for a bowl. It’s well-known as “the birthplace of curry ramen.” It’s worth visiting if you like those two things. The curry is quite a standard Japanese curry flavor profile, I recommend a spicy version if you want a bit more punch. It’s located between Chitose and Tomakomai and easily accessible from the airport by car. It can get busy over meal times, but it’s a large establishment and tables turn over quickly, so you won’t have to wait long. Side menu items are worth exploring also. There is the ubiquitous chashu-don, but for my money and if you want something a little different try out their gyoza dumplings. There are several varieties of gyoza, all explained in Japanese and English on the menu. I had Hokkaidō venison (deer). The wrappers of the dumpling are as made in-house as well, giving them a pleasing chewy texture not often not found in commercial varieties. This is not refined gourmand style ramen, but you will leave satisfied with honest home cooked feel.

Tried their gyoza for a quick break before heading to our hotel 1.5h away. Not too bad. Alot of ppl eating their ramen.

Curry spicy ramen with paper cover to prevent spill over. First buy meal ticket and present it to the staff. Staff will provide small device with half ticket. After ready the device will buzz and self service.

Came to here after landing since it is located nearby the airport. We order spicy miso ramyen, curry ramen, donkotsu ramyen and miso ramyen with kai kyoza. My family said it was the best local ramyenya where lical peoplpe are only seen and praised that they can not find better one than here.

(Translated by Google) I visited for the first time because the number of reviews was amazing! Although it was around noon, the store was packed so we had to wait for a while 💦 Order the most popular curry ramen and half fried rice set from the ticket vending machine in advance♪ Curry ramen is hotter at the bottom, so we recommend mixing it up before eating. The taste was just as I expected from the appearance, but the spiciness was modest and I personally wanted more punch. I thought the prices were a little high overall. The inside of the store was lively as you would expect from a main store! Thank you for the meal☆ (Original)

Steak house
Log House Wagyu Bibi Restaurant is a must-visit for wagyu enthusiasts. Located near the airport, this restaurant exclusively serves premium cuts of wagyu beef, as well as chicken and pork. The unseasoned meats require some grilling expertise to bring out their full flavor. Visitors rave about the phenomenal food, top-notch service, and peaceful ambiance. While slightly off the beaten path, the quiet atmosphere adds to the dining experience.
Very good Wagyu beef BBQ with a decent price tag. I'd say the prices for these sort of meat and quality would cost at least 30% more towards the city area. Very quiet place and cozy. Straight forward ordering and you cook it yourself to your liking. And yes English menu is available

Amazing Wagyu steak house. We arrived late at night 7.30pm but the manager still allowed us in to make the last order. Ambience is superb and staff were helpful even though they didn’t speak any English. Very Good value for money considering what they served.

Our favourite place in the whole of Hokkaido. This is my 3rd visit. Look at the marbling on the meat… you can imagine how good it tastes!!!

Everything is just perfect!! The location is close to Chitose airport if you have time before flight or after landing I highly recommend this one .

We detoured an additional 35 km to get here. We were not disappointed. The restaurant is big and comfortable. The wait staff were helpful even though they cannot speak English well. The beef are of high quality! I will certainly make another detour to come back again

Dec 2022 visit, brought here by Hokkaido travel agent. Delicious and value for money. Premium platter (180g) costs 2850 JPY. The corn or pumpkin soup was also good! English menu is available.

The best wagyu I have ever tasted in my entire life. Food was phenomenal, but the service and ambience were what made the entire experience. Cuts of meat were marbled perfection. The restaurant’s a little out of way though, but that’s also a good point because the quiet atmosphere allowed us to enjoy our meal in peace. This was my best meal in Hokkaido and it was worth every cent we spent on it. I will definitely go out of the way to visit again if I were to return to Hokkaido.

The restaurant is around 10 mins drive from New Chitose airport (CTS). It's not in a busy commercial area so I guess that's why there's no queue in the early evening. Prime sirloin steak is a must-try.

THIS IS THE WAGYU PLACE!!!! If wagyu is what you are craving, look no further. Near the airport, this restaurant serves only wagyu beef among other such as chicken and pork. However, all the meats here are premium cuts, so prices are more steep or at least according to its quality. All meats are unseasoned, so if you are not into cooking premium cuts, it might go wasted. You need to have some basics in meat grilling the science of seasoning just before grilling so as not to "dehydrate" the meat. Everyhtong is so good. A special mention to the bone in sausage, funny and interesting as I have never seen this before ...so something to baost about!!

Nakazen is a pleasant izakaya establishment that exudes a welcoming atmosphere and offers an array of delectable seafood dishes, particularly emphasizing Northern delights. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, exuding warmth to ensure guests feel relaxed. This popular spot attracts a significant crowd due to its scrumptious offerings. Customers are enticed by the delightful flavors of Hidaka's crispy and sweet grain stabs, as well as the hot and spicy star anise sashimi.
A lovely izakaya with a menu that includes a range of rather exotic-looking sashimi, as well as great sake!

Soba noodle shop
The soba establishment, known as "Kaorutsukesoba" or "Sobana," is highly recommended for its excellent quality. The noodles and broth complement each other perfectly, creating a delightful combination. Additionally, they also offer dorayaki made from soba flour. Although the parking area near the store may be somewhat difficult to locate and limited in space, the overall experience at this restaurant is exceptional.
Great soba and udon, attentive service and pleasant atmosphere. This restaurant shows the professional attitude even on the exclusive tablewares.

(Translated by Google) 2024.03 This is a soba restaurant where you can feel the sincerity and passion for soba. I ordered a bamboo steamer with duck. The carefully selected soba noodles are served directly without adding anything. The aroma of the soba fills your nostrils, and the crisp texture of the soba is wonderful. Next, when you dip it in the tsuyu and eat it, I think the sharp and spicy tsuyu makes it a very delicious soba. However, when I arrived, I noticed how loose the water tightening and draining were. My companion was a slow eater, so I ate accordingly, but the noodles ended up getting longer in the second half. The soba noodles in the second half were just noodles, and all the deliciousness was gone. Well, soba is not meant to be eaten slowly in the first place, so I have no complaints, but if you want to enjoy this soba, I recommend eating it quickly.

(Translated by Google) This soba restaurant is located near the station in Tomakomai City, in Oji-cho, a paper mill area. It's a small store, and as soon as you enter the store, there are many counter seats lined up. This store also uses a tablet-based ordering method, which is currently trendy. Although it is convenient, this store may also be understaffed. It takes a lot of time for the staff to take orders. Although the menu at this restaurant is rather small, the restaurant serves very elaborate soba noodles. Anyway, the noodles, soup, soba soup, and all the ingredients are carefully prepared and delicious. I ordered the recommended soba flower steamer. The noodles are thick. The soup contains duck meat, mushrooms, burdock, bracken, meat dumplings, and other meats, vegetables, and wild vegetables, and the flavors of these ingredients go well together without competing with each other, and it also has a fragrant scent of yuzu. , it was just delicious. The soba soup is also thick and delicious. Although I have been to Tomakomai City several times, this is my first time visiting here. I was overjoyed and thought I had found a good shop. The young staff members were very nice and efficient, and it was a very nice shop.
