One of the oldest forts in Asia. It is maintained very well and it is clean. It has great view to the beach and the cricket stadium. There are guides who will take you around in the front either by walk or in tuktuk. There are few cafes, restaurants and stores to pick up any artifacts located around the fort. Paid parking is also available.

Very nice place with lots of space to spend time with your loved ones. It has different types of locations and activities inside the fort. Light house, sea jumping, street food, street walking are some of them. They have more than enough parking slots available inside the fort. There are many hotels inside the fort where you can stay for affordable prices. If you are walking with kids inside fort near to the sea, better be cautious and keep an eye on them, as it's deep sea closer to the walking path.

This is definitely worth visiting in Srilanka. It makes for a pleasant walk. There is no ticket here. It would be ideal to visit in the evening when the weather is pleasant. There are a lot of restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops here. There's also the national gallery and maritime museum.

Recommended to spend an entire day here. There are lots of places to go, restaurants to try out and churches monastery to visit. Who knows, you might be lucky enough to experience some marine wildlife 'baby turtles'.

It's one of the best preserved Portuguese (and Dutch) bastions, town in the South East of Asia. Takes about an hour to cover, more if one walks along the entire 3km stretch along the Ocean. There is a big gun base with the circular metal track. It's nice and breezy. The view is fabulous of the Galle bay on one side and the Rumassala Mt on the other side. One has to go there the city to reach the fort.

One of my favorite places to visit is Galle Fort. The ambience captivates me every time. The architecture and historical buildings, lovely restaurants and cafes, arts and crafts amazes me✨ Watching sunset is one of the things I never miss when I’m there. It has many museums and information centers to showcase the history of the Galle fort and how invasions of Portuguese, Dutch and Britishes affected the country,how they have used the fort and the people who lived in that era. There are many landmarks to visit inside the fort. It’s such a wonderful place that you can collect many inspirations

Nice old style colonial architecture, worth a walking tour in this area. Many places to eat, drink and relax but with tourist prices. About 2h to do the whole tour with pictures. Not much shade while walking so make sure to bring sunblock or umbrella. Free entrance for the whole area except museum. UNESCO site, a lot of information boards to explain each spot. Make sure to stop by as this is the main attraction in Galle

It was a beautiful place. A very nice tourist spot. You can enjoy the breeze and the history of the country. There are restaurants and many cafe, along with rooms to stay at. It is a huge space with many things to observe and appreciate.

Very cool and historical. You can walk around and see all the old cannons and grounds that were built by the Portuguese in 1588, later overruled by the Dutch. You can learn about the history or simply sit and watch the ocean with a calming breeze in your face. I found it all very fascinating, seeing the old buildings/relics on the perimeter of the fort. You can see the cricket ground from here as well as seeing local boys play, so many beautiful street dogs too! There are restaurants, cafes and lots of shops around. It has an incredibly European feel, it reminded me very much of Spain or Italy. From the roads and architecture to the shops and decor. Just a few minutes after leaving the fort/shopping area, you will return back to Sri Lanka but during your visit to the fort, you will be transported to Europe and immersed in very rich history. You don't need to pay any fee or buy anything if you don't want to :) also wasn’t that busy when I visited.

The main tourist attraction in Galle. This was built by the Dutch and literally feels like you are in another country. Everything has been preserved exactly as it has been for centuries. I would not recommend driving here as the roads are very narrow (they were not made with cars in mind) and there is no parking anywhere. It is free to enter, so it's much better to walk there early in the morning and explore everything. The shops here are quite expensive (as you would expect), so most people just roam around and take pictures near the outskirts and walls of the fort where you can see the lighthouse, cannons, the well, every bastion etc.

Very strong and sturdy fort. The fort is very big. It stood well when the tsunami came in 2004. A lot of people walking around the fort taking pictures. All buildings painted white. It's overlooking the southern coastal area. Very nice view even though the sky is gray.

Best experience everyone should try in Sri Lanka!! You can usually experience a lot in one place.Relaxing vibe and beautiful environment! There is so much to learn and see! If you choose this place to spend free time, this is recommended as a suitable place But it may change depending on the time you come and if you come during the sunnier season, Galle fort will tire you quite a bit and the best thing is to come during such times in the morning or evening!! The months of November and December are quite rainy, so you can enjoy its beauty without getting tired, even during the day in those months!! P. There isn't any fort here, but a large area fortified by thick walls which housed and safe-guarded a great administration in the past. Old buildings as originally constructed are kept intact. Old church, light house, old prison, museums and the many eateries within this compound provides the feeling of the time spent is worth and satisfactory.

Wish we had more time here. We came by scooter from Mirissa. Fabulous drive up. Arrived 9am. What a site-so much to see in this compound. Walking along the wall is breathtaking. Views of the ocean just marvellous. There’s shops, restaurants, the light house. We saw the troops march out of the gates. And just outside the gates is a food shop with very reasonably priced food and drinks. There was also a cultural gathering onsite and the ambience of it all made for a wonderful day.

Great coastal town in Srilanka. Visit after 4 to avoid the scorching sun. Great views of the Indian Ocean. Nothing else to do much. Half a day of time for Galle is more than enough.

I visited Galle for the first time with my husband and family.It was an awesome vacation as I enjoyed every moment spent exploring the galle city,their historical places,culture and the society. The city of Galle, nestled in the southern coast of Sri Lanka, is a charming and delightful place to visit. Popular among local as well as foreign tourists, Galle can be reached in approximately one hour from Colombo via the Southern Expressway. Galle has an abundance of culture, history, natural beauty and of course some of the best beaches on the island. It’s a great place to visit with kids, with your partner or even just by yourself. You can splurge on exclusive luxury hotels, or opt for budget friendly accommodation. Either way, you are bound to have an absolutely fantastic holiday in sunny Galle.

A great place with really nice boutique shops and some of the best restaurants around the whole area. A must visit for strolling around small cute streets, having a coffee, enjoying some relaxed cocktails. Made my trip complete !

Beautiful view by the sea. We found a lot of coral fossils on the beach. Definitely spare a bit of time to also walk around the streets nearby to get a feel of the history of this place, and click fantastic photos.

The light house and the Dutch fort area is overall a great way to spend an evening or an afternoon. We went twice during our trip - in the afternoon it was scorching but there are plenty of ice cream shops to cool you down in town

A must see place at sunset. The entirety of Galle Fort has loads of charm, but the sunset colours takes it to another level. Get there 1 hour before and just walk around. It’s small enough to be easily covered that way and dutch influence makes the buildings and architecture stand out from everything else we’ve seen in Sri Lanka.

This place is definitely a must visit in Sri Lanka. It's more or less a long walk so early morning or after 4 is the best times to visit. Recently it's under renovation so some places are off limits. It is full of history and they have a museum for the information. Has loads of nice restaurants for dine in. The only downside is how dirty the place is with ice cream wrappers and plastic bottles everywhere.

A must-see in Galle but I was a bit underwhelmed. Thought it would be bigger & in better condition. That said if you’re already walking around the Fort, it is quite easy to get to. There’s a small stretch of beach below the lighthouse which you can access through stone staircase. No fee to enter the Fort & the beach.

Absolutely serene. The place was crowded with visitors. Even the weather wasn't a hindrance at all. The sea view, old structure, and monuments as well as clean roads, it was a combination of all of it together. Never seen before experience for sure. We met an aged Indian couple, which was a cute experience too.

The Galle Lighthouse (also known as Pointe de Galle Light) is an onshore Lighthouse in Galle, Sri Lanka and is operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. This is Sri Lanka's oldest light station. The first lighthouse at Galle was built by the British in 1848. It was a 24.4-metre-high (80 ft) iron lighthouse, constructed from cast-iron plates, imported from England, designed by British architect Alexander Gordon and erected by Messrs. Robinson, Engineers of Pimlico. The lighthouse, painted white, was located on the southwest bastion, Utrtecht Bastion, of Galle fort on the western side of Galle Harbor. It had a fixed point light with prolate reflectors, which was visible for 19 kilometres (12 mi). In July 1936 it was destroyed by fire. The current 26.5-metre-high (87 ft) concrete lighthouse was erected about 100 metres (330 ft) from the original site in 1939. The original light was furnished with a glass prism lens floating in a bath of mercury (to reduce friction) and was powered by a weight driven machine. The light station is within the walls of the ancient Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and well known tourist attraction. The lighthouse is strategically located at the southern end of the promontory, built approximately 6 metres (20 ft) above the road level on the ramparts, at what is known as the Point Utrecht Bastion, giving it full view of any ships entering Galle Harbour.

Beautiful location in the fort. Great view of the beach. There is a lot of street shopping and street food available. It is quite busy. Good place for tourist to visit. Parking is available, there is also street parking available. You can get an amazing view of the sunset from the lighthouse.

A beautiful & historical landmark - the lighthouse tower stands tall surrounded by coconut trees and the sea water by its side. Especially beautiful during sunrise & sunset with softer rays of the sun enhancing its beauty. Morning hours are definitely better as one gets to experience it without the noon or evening crowds. We loved visiting Galle Fort and this lighthouse. This is a MUST SEE when in Galle. We walked around the entire perimeter of the fort, but this lighthouse was the highlight. I can imagine coming here for sunset would be stunning also!

Visiting the turtle sanctuary was definitely one of our Sri Lankan highlights. Absolutely incredibly dedicated people working here. The turtles are absolutely amazing to watch and learn about. We were able to release 5 day old turtles into the ocean for a small donation fee. Highly recommend a visit to this place.❤️

Really nice place to visit, especially with kids! These guys do good things, it feels good to support this business. You get to learn about turtles and the challenges they face. Your money will go towards the rehabilitation of turtles who have eaten plastic bags, been hooked by fisherman etc.

This place is truly amazing. They do such great work and this is definitely worth a visit. For the entry (2000 rupees per person) they show you around and explain everything about the turtles. We even witnessed baby turtles which we send on their way into the ocean. Great place and great volunteer work!

This was an amazing experience!! One of the guides there was kind and helpful she gave us detailed backgrounds and stories of each turtle and how they ended up here. The turtles were well looked after and everything was well kept and clean. I would highly recommend coming here.

Do not miss this place! We were warmly welcomed and given information about the types of turtles found in Sri Lanka. The place is well maintained and it’s obvious these rescued turtles are very well cared for. It was great to be told the background stories of many of them, and also how eggs are rescued from the beach and hatched. I came away knowing a lot more and grateful for the experience.

Hi guys, Very good turtle project to help protect and safe the sea water turtles. Great to visit or even volunteer. I did it too and it is a great experience. During the tour the volunteers will tell you about the different kinds and what they are doing like breeding the eggs or saving injured turtles from fish nets or plastic bags. Come visit but please do not touch the turtles!

After arriving we received an introduction about the centre and its turtles that are being cured of illnesses to be then released after healing. After that, we were given time to watch the turtles (please make sure to wash hands beforehand) and finally we could select one babyturtle to release at the beach. All in all a very nice experience. Costs: 2000 for the tour and entrance, another 1500 for releasing the baby turtle.

This is my first experience with sea turtles and this is the amazing place to visit turtles ( injured ones, baby turtles and others)❤️.and the guardians of the place and the keepers of turtles are very kind and they give a some sort of knowledge about the turtles too. So visit and get the experience with those amazing sea creatures 🥰.

They are doing an incredible job in protecting the sea turtles. Injured turtles are rescued and treated here. They have a hatchery and release the baby turtles to the sea. Worth visiting and it helps them to cover the expenses. The lady was explaining everything very nicely and clearly. You can take the turtles to your hand and see them play. Wonderful experience, and very informative.

Great experience seeing the turtles and the team here are doing a great job. There is a hatchery with lots of new baby turtles hatched last night there and they are providing rehabilitation for those turtles injured by nets/boats also.

We had a wonderful experience at the hatchery seeing and also respectfully touching these wonderful animals. The staff there is super friendly and they take very good care. We were also allowed to release some freshly hatched individuals which was a very touching moment. Please only go there if you love animals and pay the utmost respect to these delicate creatures!

An amazing experience. The turtles were all well looked after in clean water. We got a very knowledgeable talk about the kinds of turtles and why the turtles came under their care. Would recommend to any animal lovers! Thankyou !!

We were there spontaneously and were greeted warmly. Since we are there in the off season, there were no other visitors there and we were able to look at everything in peace. It is a small family that runs the company and the lovely lady told us a lot about the animals. This place is a unique beautiful experience for everyone!

Nestled along the serene coastline, this conservation haven is a beacon of hope for these incredible creatures. Upon entering, the passionate and knowledgeable staff welcomed us, sharing insightful information about the center's crucial mission in protecting and rehabilitating sea turtles. Witnessing the dedicated team's commitment to the conservation of these majestic beings was both educational and inspiring.

Great place to rescue, treat and help turtles reproduce before releasing them to the water again. Small place but serious effort being put to look after those amazing organisms 🐢 5000 Rupees must be given as a donation when visiting the center. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed stroking the turtles shells.

Very lovely place and friendly people that work here. They are doing an important job. Come here and support. A genuine place and not a tourist trap like some other hatcheries.

Ok. I commend them for the sanctuary work they do. Offer hatchlings a better chance of survival to be incubated in a protected space rather than the wild of the beach. However, I question if their motives is to serve the turtles or themselves‽‽ The reason I query this is this ..... As I arrived I asked the man I was approaching if they were yet open. To which he replied they were. Before I knew it I was quite aggressively approached by a female family member who told me to read the sign and pay 2,000LKR. I was quite taken back by her demeanor. With backpack in tow, I thought I could at least enter the facility, perhaps put my bag down and pay at the counter. I wasnt in any way objecting to paying to support the work they do at the nursery. I found her tone and manner very abrasive and unnecessary, to which I addressed with her and she just shrugged me off. I paid her the 2,000LKR she demanded and didn't receive a ticket. I looked around the various concrete pools that had about 50 new hatchlings that were 3 days old. And another pool about one week old. A few pools with older injured, or blind ones that cannot be released back into the wild. I asked about their rehabilitation programme and they said they care for the ones injured and those that have consumed debris such as plastic pollution. Another reason why I question if the sanctuary is for the turtles or them is that I stepped outside - beach side and witnessed a lot of plastic rubbish right on their doorstep! If they were serious about protecting the wildlife, they would have broader visions clean up projects to try eliminate the chances of turtles injesting rubbish in the first place

We were disappointed about this experience. There was not even a banner to find the way. Place was difficult to find and reach. It's not worth the price, they charge 1000 rupees per person. They didn't even give a ticket. They said that the price is posted on the google. I think they were only targeting the tourists. There were some turtles here.Some turtles are injured one.They rescues that injured turtles and release them back to the ocean.

I felt the lady running the place was dissapointed that she couldn't charge us foreign rates aa we had our local certs to show. They charged us for the driver as well which most places won't do. Her attitude at the start was quite abrupt due to that, she did settle down after. She did go from tank to tank and explain the stories. The kids also got to release turtles into the sea (Extra cost of course). Entrance is on the high side, and this place is quite small for what you pay.

This forest reserve is absolutely worth a visit. I recommend to stay at some of the smaller tourist lodges accessible from Deniyaya. Much more reasonable than on the other side. Also, you’ll most likely have the place for yourself.

Sinharaja Rain Forest is the home for a majority of Sri Lanka's endemic species of animals.It Reserve was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.Actually,This forest reserve is absolutely worth a visit.It's So beautiful Rain Forest. You can see the very rare collection of birds,Insects,butterflies,snakes, plants, flowers and many more. Bring some socks and salt against leeches as well as long clothes to protect yourself. You should spend atleast a day inside the woods and remember to respect the treees, plants and everything there.In this place to leave only footprints. Let's collectively preserve and appreciate the pristine beauty of this magical rainforest. Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a forest reserve and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. More than 60% of the trees are endemic and many of them are considered rare. 50% of Sri Lankan's endemics species of animals (especially butterfly, amphibians, birds, snakes and fish species). It is home to 95% endemic birds. The hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests ecoregion, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Sinharaja can be accessed from Weddagala, Lankagama, Deniyaya or Rakwana sides. Sinharaja is the home for a majority of Sri Lanka's endemic species of animals. From Lankagama entrance, you can visit about 5-6 waterfalls by taking a small hike which lasts for about 3 hours. There are even safe spots to have a bath during the trail. From Pitadeniya entrance, you can visit a few waterfalls. The pinnacle of Sinharaja Forest reserve trails, the 'Sinhagala' trail can be tried out from here as well. It takes around 4.5 hours to reach the Sinhagala point and about 2.5 hours for the journey back. From Kudawa entrance, there are two popular trails; Mulawella & Sinhagala. Mulawella trails takes around 2-3 hours, while the Sinhagala trail takes around 9-10 hours. If you are to complete the Sinhagala trail, you have to start from Kudawa Conservation Center at least by 6.30 am. All the trails are infested with leaches, hence take appropriate precautions (such as leach socks, salt/siddhalepa) if you are allergic to leeches. You must get the assistance of a guide to try out any of the trails in Sinharaja.

Invertebrates include the endemic Sri Lankan birdwing butterfly and leeches. The rainforest likely formed during the Jurassic era (from 200 million years to 145 million years ago). This forest encompasses a span of 36,000 hectares (88,960 acres/360 km²).[3] The reserve is only 21 km (13 mi) from east to west, and a maximum of 7 km (4.3 mi) from north to south, but it is a treasure trove of endemic species, including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Sinharaja forest vegetation density has been around 240,000 plants per hectare, the most dense rain forest in Asia.[4] Human activity The reserve is well-integrated with the local population who live in some dozens of villages dotted along the border. The villages are more in number along the southern border whilst the presence of some large estates along the northern border has resulted in only a few villages there. The locals collect herbal medicine, edible fruits, nuts, mushrooms, other non-timber forest products including bees honey and a sugary sap collected from a local palm species of the genus Caryota. The sap is converted into jaggery, a local brew and vinegar. Local people walk in the forest to collect the above items when they are not busy with their other agricultural pursuits. In addition, the crystal-clear water coming from dozens of streams is the main water source for all people living around the reserve. For generations, local people trekked through the forest from south to north to make their annual pilgrimage to the Adams Peak. In 2013, UNESCO requested to halt the widening of ancient road linking Lankagama area to Deniyaya along a 1-km jungle patch inside the protected area after a complaint from The Centre for Environmental and Nature Studies of Sri Lanka. The construction recommenced on August 10, 2020 after prolonged appeals by the people living in villages to the Sri Lankan Government. A group of environmentalists carried out a big social media campaign and asked the Sri Lanka Forest Department, the President, the Ministry of Environment and the Central Environment authority to stop this but The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to go ahead with it to improve the livelihood of poor villagers of the area as it will clear only 0.006% of the total landmass of the forest. Mr. Martin Wijesinhe was one of the most significant people in Sri Lanka in connection to the Sinharaja.[5] He was the unofficial guardian of the Sinharaja. He has been the protector and caretaker of it since the 1950s till his death in 2021.[6]

Amazing! Highlight of the trip to Sri Lanka. All the guides are trained professionals, knowledgable in the local plants, wildlife and birds. The guides have amazing eyes and tracking skills, couldn’t believe the camouflaged creatures they were able to spot so easily. There are leeches but they don’t carry diseases, just a bit gross if you get bitten. Wear long socks over long pants. Bring swimwear if you do the waterfall route from the southern entrance, swimming in the waterfall was top highlight. We did two tours 1. Wathugala: A 6 hour hike from the southern entrance (Wathugala) around waterfalls with Chama from Rainforest Mount Lodge. We learned about the many birds, snakes, monkeys, lizards, insects, and plants that we saw. Note that the UNESCO village is good for bird watching but the dense forest here is good for mostly lizards and snakes. The first portion of the track is a concrete path which turns into a rougher path through the forest. A somewhat difficult hike, if you’re less able then maybe ask your guide to do a shorter hike only to the first waterfall and the UNESCO village. 2. Kurulugala A bird watching tour through the southwest entrance (Kurulugala) with Ramesh. Incredibly knowledgable in birds, he spent 4 months training in ornithology. We saw 8 endemic species in only 3 hours. Blue magpies, yellow fronted barbets, orange billed babblers, jungle fowl, Ceylon white eye, red faced malkoha, spot winged ground thrush, scimitar babbler. Getting there: We had our own tuktuk but decided to get a taxi there and back which we arranged through our hotel. Important to note that PickMe might not work from close to the park, try to book your taxi ahead of time. The drive to Deniyaya was well maintained roads. If you have your own tuktuk and are ok with winding roads you will be ok driving to Deniyaya. The road from Deniyaya to either of the entrances is really bad. Highly recommend getting a driver. Staying there: We stayed just outside the southern entrance (Wathugala) at Rainforest Mount Lodge. Highly recommend. Lots of other accommodation near there all seemed good quality.

This was a great nature immersion experience. Me and my two friends went with a guide named Danu ( WhatsApp +94 77 525 4886). He's an honest and very kind man and agreed on a reasonable price, unlike the hotels in the area. The tour was fun, very informative and a great little adventure. I plan to come back to Sinharaja for more tours, and I will be checking if Danu is available

Amazing nature. We took a local guide. Before we started with a trail he served us free snacks and tea. In the middle of the trail a heavy rain came upon us so we had to shorten a trip and miss waterfalls because of high water. However we saw them from 100 meters distance, still amazing! We were shocked with the amount of leech but nobody got bitten. We used a lot of salt on our shoes.

We rented a motorbike and we went for this sinharaja forest reserve.. so easy to find on google maps. And you can not get lost. Incredible views. You can see the real nature of this place. They also have waterfalls you can visit. 8 of them I think. For entrance you have to pay. But it’s super cheap. Of course you’ll see some guides there. Offer their help. But definitely no need to take them. You can do it on your own as we did. Some of the places you can even swim. We got some rain. Big again, what I realized being in Sri Lanka that it’s never for longer then short time. We went April so in vending definitely was needed a warm jacket. Since it was. Abir chilly. But during the day when sun is out is amazing. Some days a bit more human then others… but perfect month to visit this island.

We’re so glad that we met Mr Sudath, who is a church employee, and explained very well this church, its history, and almost all the church building items. I think the Galle Fort management should learn from this gentleman how to be a humble, knowledgeable guide for all the buildings in the fort complex. If you happen to visit this church, do make sure that you meet this gentleman and ask for a tour. It’s worth spending at least half an hour to listen to his explanations and to agree on each of the Dutch histories on the church items. Ask from the dog symbol on one of the floor grave plaques to the wedge shape steel plate in the roof structure. He explained all.

A must visited placed in Galle fort. An ancient church built by dutch. Many things to see n study inside the church. Their architechture, toomb stons and cravings, wooden items etc....The service level of the guide/care taker is also commendable. Highly recommended to visit but since this is still using as a church not a place to have fun or loitering...

A must see place when in Galle Fort. The architecture, and interesting tombstones definitely worth a closer look. The caretakers of the church are somewhat cautious (specially about locals) may be for security reasons, and clearly no place for loitering. But once they know your intentions you are good to go.

Though not well maintained. There is a cemetery also, I presume, touching the church building. Not sure about this, see my snaps. There were some 2 basement cellars, which were closed/ barricaded. Nothing much to talk about.

This was one of my first stops at Galle Fort. It's an impressive structure with several stained glass windows. There was a small collection of parishioners outside when I visited, but I was free to walk through the church and grounds. For a quick visit, plan to spend 15 minutes, maybe an hour if you get really engaged.

Nice relaxing place. Like the young vibe. A drink typically cost around 1500 or below. Meals are not available all the time but depending on the availability. Evening is the best time to enjoy the view and the sunset.

Old Dutch Hospital turned into an attractive restaurant complex. Mostly upscale restaurants and shops are located. A separate area with well maintained clean washrooms available. Highly recommend.

Old dutch hospital is a restaurant complex situated inside the famous Galle Dutch Fort. It was used by the Dutch as a hospital, later renovated by the Sri Lankan government now used as a restaurant complex and a shopping mall where several exotic restaurants, cafes and shops are located. The prices here are a bit on the higher side given it's mainly aiming tourists rather than local tourists. However, it's a great place to hangout, have a drink or have lunch as it's located by the sea.

Nice location, exists in the left hand side of the old Dutch fort, Galle, Sri Lanka. There are good restaurants inside here for people to dine in. Can have a delicious meal while enjoying the scenarios of the Indian Ocean, Roomassala Hill and Galle harbour

The cafe was good, great and decent. It is a small place but very cute and just to our expectations. The pricing was a bit on the high side but was worth it, too.

A Dutch colonial building restored by local government is a great place to shop and eat. Excellent view of sea, Galle Harbour from front. Very pictures place, which has more than 100 years of history.

The old dutch hospital in Galle is one of the oldest buildings inside the historic World Heritage site of the Dutch Fort and dates back to the Dutch colonial era in Sri Lanka. The building depicts 17th century Dutch colonial architecture. Like many Dutch buildings of that era, the walls made using cabok (coral stone) are 50cm(20inc) thick and massive teak beams can be seen preserved todate. Paved with granite the upper floor is wooden. The Dutch built it as a hospital and in 1850 the British converted it into a barracks and later used it as an administrator premises. Following Sri Lanka's independence in 1948 it was used as the Galle Town Hall. In 2014, the building having been restored to it's original state , was developed into a shopping and dining presinct. A must visit if you are the in the Old Dutch Fort, Galle.

Maritime museum of Galle is an important venue one has to mandatorily visit if you happen to visit Galle. The reason being this the place you will get to see how human civilization used to function navigating sea during medieval period. Not only that, museum also has remains of erstwhile civilization dating back to pre-christ history as far as 500 BC. You will also get to see boats used by dwellers during those periods which were used for fishing and long journeys in ocean. A worthwhile time spent in this museum will also enrich your knowledge on ship ruins excavated and put across to see of those belonging to the Dutch, Portuguese and the British.

This museum is situated in an ancient building built by Dutch and used as a warehouse. The exhibits in the museum are related to maritime archaeology. The posters displayed there give basic information to understand the maritime archaeology and about items displayed there. It is a good place to visit if you happen to be in Galle.

Significant repository of marine history within the historic Galle Fort. While the artifacts and information are interesting, the museum could benefit from better maintenance. The dimly lit interior and non-functional fans detract from the overall experience. 🌟🏛️ Need to buy entry ticket.

Big, informative museum with so much history related to Sri Lankan marine life. The museum is well maintained but the staff aren't very helpful. It also charges 5 times more for foreigners (Rs1000+) compared to locals and it's cash only.

A very educational place. Anyone can learn about the sea. Not too much crowded since some do not go to see it. I guess we need 2 , 3 hours to see this whole place. Very good

Around 20–30 minutes visit. Ticket prices for local adults are LKR 50/-. for foreigners, LKR around 350/- There is a large whale skeleton hanging on the roof, and some village events are displayed using dummies. A few educational things can be grabbed from here. Good place to visit inside of Galle dutch fort.. ticket prices are -> Rs. 50 for local adults & Rs. 25 for Local Kids. But there was nothing much to see in the museum. Highlighted item of the museum is the "large whale skeleton hanging on the roof."

This is also the same story as the other general museum in the fort, comparatively a good collection of items, with poor customer service. The large indoor area could be put with more artefacts. I’m not sure if it is only for Dutch-Galle related maritime items, or a collection of random historical items around the country. If it’s the second, I think there could be more interesting items which can come under its roof, and making this place more colourful.

Be aware; there are two Maritime museums next to each other. This review is abou the Maritime Museum NOT the archeological Maritime Museum. Ok, it’s not the Louvre in Paris or Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam but the small interesting Maritime Museum is worth a (short) visit. Entrance costs about LKR 520,- The exhibitions and panels give information on fishing boats and techniques in Sri Lanka. There are some nice fishing boat models. More interesting we found are the board panels and photos on the 2004 tsunami as well as coastal protection such mangroves and coral reefs. There is a huge whale skaloton hanging on the ceiling. After visiting this museum, head to the Black Ford (Zwart Ford) which is the place were the Portugese built their first Galle ford before the Dutch took over. It’s through a gate which will be opened by the police officer.

You should visit the Maritime Museum once you visit galle . We can leran lot of things about the sea , and ancient fishing methods , life of fishermem ,old boats , old dutcg ships etc . Everything has been explained in boards but there is no guide .

It was not much. A very little space with species of the area and a big whale skeleton inside. Which is the only thing worth the time and few dolls like people of the area portrayed there was nice. I wont recommend going there for this one alone. See the surrounding places in galle. And the ticket price for foreigners is too high. Waste of money i would say. You could wander the streets. That would be the most beautiful thing you could do.

What a difference compared to the Maritime Archeological Museum! In not a good way... The sole highlight was the whale skeleton for me. If you've never seen one, it's worth the 550 entry fee. Otherwise I would suggest to skip this museum and spend your money elsewhere. The exhibition is dated and very small. It lacks cohesion and a read thread. And the overall air humidity must be around 100%. Apparently the problem of the water in the walls was not successfully addresses during the renovations after the 2004 tsunami. From an external perspective the exhibition should become part of the Maritime Archeological Museum.

Inside the Galle Fort, interesting maritime history of Srilanka with many artefacts and model replicas of the earliest types of boats with nice simple explanations in English. There are two sections of the museum which strangely you have to pay two separate fees to enter. Whole experience doesn’t take more than an hour.

It is simply awesome location and everyone should visit this museum if you visit Galle fort. All artifacts and structures are placed beautifully and museum is more spacious. There is a bit of dust inside the museum at the time I went there. Bit crowded in weekends and holidays but not a big issue. Can visit freely in weekdays. It is having Sri Lankan traditional fisheries, fishing gear, boats, vessels etc. Exhibits in the museum are related to maritime archeology.

A small maritime museum and i guess most of the items washed away during Tsunami in 2004. But I believe this museum can be improved in many ways as I have seen lot of Martime Museums in Europe. There is a big history with Maritime affairs in Galle and southern coast. Simply include those history and also can include current technology to display the things. This can be improved as a tourist destination.

At first I thought paying $8 cdn was too much but am glad decided to go. So much to learn especially if take time to read the big boards how different colonist took advantage of Sri Lanka. Learned how the sea played a role in trade and various ships that sank in harbour. I would say this is a must for anyone curious about the island. My big takeaway was how china traded with Sri in first century and now we are seeing history repeating again as Chinese influence grows again in the island

This old clock tower was built in 1883 inside the ancient 434 year old World Heritage site Galle Dutch Fort on top of an old guard room. This majestic structure is perfectly preserved and in working order.

Pretty much calm place. Great for photography. The view is truly mesmerizing. There are no places to have a snack, so you need to bring them with you when you enter the area. It would usually take about an hour to roam the area.

A beautiful location and iconic to Sri Lanka. This is a mix of the region and Europe. With free entry you are free to wander the streets of this fort township with shop fronts, religious centres and of course the light house and clock tower famous for this. Over look the ocean at one end and Jayasuriya’s home ground at the other (from the clock tower that oval below is a cricket ground famous for world class cricket and Jayasuriya is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous batsmen). As with all tourist locations the hawkers are always about but unlike Kandy when you say a polite no thanks they leave you alone. Be sure to have this in your itinerary to see as it’s a great place to see some history, break up the drive from Mirissa / Yala or just see the historical and iconic fort.

Visited Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Village in Koggala with my family and we were thoroughly impressed! The entrance fee was very fair, the environment was clean, and the museum was superb. Highly recommend this enriching experience for families!

The historical center opens at 9am and shuts down at 5pm and the ticket is Rs 50 for neighborhood grown-ups. It is truly worth the cost! It takes around an hour and half to tour the entire spot. The scene is straightforwardly and effectively open from the principle street (infront of The Fortress, Koggala) and the vehicle leave is adequately separated.

interesting museum includes the house where the author Martin Wickramasinghe was born (the traditional southern structure dates back 200 years and has some Dutch architectural influences). Exhibits are well displayed, with information in English, with a good section on dance puppets, kolam masks , carriages and Buddhist artefacts. Look for the turn near the 131km post, across from the Fortress Hotel. The bookshop sells Wickramasinghe's works, which are lauded for their exploration of local cultures and the roots of all the people on the island. Washrooms available. Historical museum of father of modern Sinhala literature worth to visit.

Museum of the great sri-lankian writer. There are his ancestors house, photos of him, personal things and a very interesting collection of folk art and tools. We had a short lecture about the writer, it was really exciting to know about Martin Wickramasinghe, who was completely unknown for us before it. Also you can buy his books there, they have it in English.

Very good tourist place to visit for knowledge on srilankan past in colonial era. Tools in various rural industries and mulity cultural dresses are on the display. Your kids may gain lot of reading in our past ,if you pay one visit. Environment is well managed by Martin Wickramasinghe trust compare to same type places managed by government paid archeologycal department.

The venue is directly and easily accessible from the main road (infront of The Fortress, Koggala) and the car park is amply spaced. The colossal museum houses Buddhist monuments, artifacts of sinhala literature, agricultural tools, ancient puppet models, ancient units of measure, ancient masks used for dances, tools used in the clay, stone, brass, gem and silver industries, clothing of the past, a kitchen of the ancient homes, decorations and ornaments, large scale models of inventions of the sinhalese such as bisokotuwa, weaving machines, each and every novel and book of Martin Wickramasinghe, land and water vehicles of the past such as various types of carts, boats, clothing styles of different races and casts, and many more... This place is a must see if you visit down south. You're sure to love the place if you adore nature and our ancient culture. The information and the experience will especially be of paramount importance to Grade 5 scholarship and O/L students.

Interesting "museum" - it's a huge collection of all sorts of ephemera from 1 owner, and the courtyard is lovely with a well and some displays of ladies making traditional bobbin lace and jewellers doing their thing. You get shepherded out through a jewellery store, but it's definitely worth a look and is free! I enjoyed this more than the maritime museum that I foolishly paid for.

A hidden museum in the Galle Fort was hosted by a visionary gem businessman, namely Mr. M.H.A. Shankar. Opening hours 0900-1800hrs Friday 1200-1330 hrs closed This entry is free, and anyone can visit this museum. There is no restriction on taking photos. You can see many artifacts that are well arranged and displayed. Most of the items belong to the Dutch period in Sri Lanka. Even the building appeared in Dutch architecture. It is worth visiting this place if you have an interest in historical things relevant to the Dutch period. The tour won't take much time. (nearly 30 minutes) Appreciate the effort of the initiator of the museum and his successors for giving such a valuable opportunity.

One of the most iconic masjids in Sri Lanka. Facing the lighthouse, this beautifully maintained whitewashed building is a highly unusual construction combining eclectic architectural features that include a dash of baroque, British Victorian and Islamic detailing. Its facade is more reminiscent of a Portuguese cathedral than a mosque. There's no general admission, but non-Muslims may be invited to enter if dressed appropriately. Inside there's a wonderful little mihrab, complete with small decorative domes, and some attractive floor tiling.

Amongst the aged landscape of Galle Fort with its historical homes and buildings, rises the century old Meeran Mosque. The majestic white structure was built in 1904 by Ahamed Haji Ismail. Ismail was a devout Muslim who wished to provide a safe and proper prayer place to worshippers. Being a reasonably wealthy man, he made his dream a reality by commissioning mosques not only in Galle Fort, but also in Weligama and Poruwa. The Fort's Meeran Mosque is built over an Islamic prayer space believed to have existed for over 300 years. Little is known about this ancient space, except that it may have been made by Muslim Traders in the area who took advantage of the ships that visited the ancient port of Galle. The Meeran Mosque is built facing the direction of Mecca using the available local materials and skilled local masons and carvers.. The heavily Dutch-influenced design blends well with the surrounding structures. However the inside of the mosque is an exotic image of pure luxury. Bright rooms and corridors, enhanced by high ceilings. Beautifully patterned Italian floor tiles. Brilliant panes of stained glass with various embedded motifs on windows and doors. A large central space with high windows and an exquisitely sculpted arch that marks the direction to pray. The hanging chandeliers, loft space created by wooden rafters and extra high ceiling make the central area seem more spacious than usual. The little well-maintained lawn outside offers a place for relaxation and reunion to worshippers who visit. Can females visit, they would have a separate section with no male interaction. While Meeran allows females to visit (given appropriately covered clothing is worn) the main areas of the mosque as a tour display, the prayer area for females is a small room built recently in a separate modern building. As such it lacks the exoticism of the main part of the mosque. Meeran mosque is definitely worth a quick tour. Keep in mind that you have to leave your footwear outside

The architecture of All saint’s Church is the finest specimen of an English Church in 13 century Architecture in Sri Lanka. Another stone Gothic Church, All Saint’s Galle was built under the inspiration and guidance of scholar and poet Archdeacon G.J. Schrader perhaps the most beautiful Church in Ceylon.

One of Galle’s old town’s monuments. I liked the style and it represents nicely the feel of the town with its English architecture and influence. It needs some maintenance but with all that is going on, it is understandable. Very beautiful

Under the guidance of the 2nd Bishop of Colombo the Rt. Rev. Piers Calverley Claughton and under the leadership of Revd. Dr. George Schrader, later Archdeacon of Colombo, the construction of the church building was commenced. In 1868 October 30th the laying of the foundation stone was held. 1871 February 21st the church building was consecrated by the Bishop Claughton for the glory of God and for worship services. All those who step into this church whether foreign or local say that this is a magnificent church. The Church building is being built according to the Gothic Architecture. The stained glass windows which depicts Bible stories of the Birth of Jesus, Baptism, crucifixion, resurrection and Pentecost and 4 granite stone pillars proves that it is a magnificent beautiful edifice, which is archeologically preserved.

Another of the many sights to be found within Galle Fort is All Saints Anglican Church. Built in a gorgeous Gothic Revival style, the church was opened in 1871, and its fine features paint a very pretty picture. Its white arches, columns, and central tower stand out delightfully against the dull kabuk rock and mortar of its walls, with its inside painted in the same dazzlingly bright white. Here you’ll find some very solid pews and fantastic stained-glass windows. The cool temperature and peaceful ambiance make it the perfect place for some quiet introspection away from the heat and noise of the city.

Kanneliya Forest Resort is one of the best place located adjescent to the Kanneliya forest reserve. It is located in the edge of the very beautiful natural stream starting from Kanneliya forest. You can have a bath from that stream with pure cool water. Rooms are clean and value for money. Bathrooms are very clean and surround of the room is very calm and quit. Foods were very taste and also value for money. They also have a wedding hall also. Beautiful and clean place to have a break.

This is an ideal place to have a function or a workshop aiming to have a tracking through the forest to enjoy the nature. Conveniently located. Value for money. Staff is very friendly and flexible with our requests. I had been there for a tracking session with office mates and can be recommend for such workshop especially if the training session having some links with environment protection/management.

KFR is the ideal choice if you're looking for reasonably priced lodging for a large group. Situated at the boundary of Kanneliya forest resort, the resort is right next to the river where you can have a refreshing bath. They have a small flat area by the river where you can sit and relax. Some rooms are built like regular houses while one room (cottage) bears a rustic vibe with clay lined walls. I stayed here but it wasn't to my liking much. The bathrooms are clean and satisfactorily equipped with hot water and other essentials. Their food is undoubtedly great. They even put together a superb barbeque at a small fee. The dining area is quite large and I was told weddings are held there. Everybody working here is very cooperative. We travelled during a rainy weekend, and there were a few leechers. So keep an eye out.

Its a good place to relax, meditate, and spend time with nature. Plz do notexpect star hotel services here, they are not star class hotel. You can enjoy Sri Lankan dishes as well as modern dishes, with desserts and refreshments . The stream can be approached anytime and its safe for kids with adult inspection. Be sensitive to rainfall. There is an area for alcohol and drinking and singing is not allowed in private areas. Rain forest is inwalking distance. Charges are fare.

We spent two nights, really wonderful calm place closed by kanneliye rain forest.Service was excellent and foods were delicious.Rooms and bathrooms were clean.There is a river just next to rooms and very easy to access.

The hotel is located at the border of the Kanneliya Forest Reserve. It's about 500 meters from the Reserve which is very convenient. The garden of the hotel has been landscaped beautifully. The hotel decor is a bit dated and I wouldn't call it 4 star. However, it was very pleasant. The location was so absolutely serene and peaceful. From most of the rooms, you could see the stream that runs by it, and you could hear the sound of the water. The rooms were basic. No A/C only fans but the climate was cool enough that we didn't need a/c. Each room had a little rustic balcony and you could sit there and admire the flora and fauna and listen to the warer. Fabulous! The bathrooms were clean as well and had hot water. We had to ask for some things like soap and top sheets for the beds. It was provided immediately. The food was absolutely amazing. We were there for 2 nights 3 days. They had a mix of western and local Both were delicious. You could also give your food preferences, which we did. Their tea was amazing as well probably due to the use of spring water. The staff was very helpful and obliging. The best was the stream! It was shallow, clear and clean. There was a path to go down directly to the stream from the rooms. The part of the stream directly accessible by the upper level rooms had areas of rocks that served as a natural jacuzzi! We were there for hours. It's a lovely place to relax and unwind.

Very beautiful, calm and peaceful place. Entrance 1000 lkr for two adults and a baby. Interesting small excursion and we saw a varan, two monkey and fed dogs. I recommend this place! It impressed. I feel there very comfortable.

A Raja Maha Viharaya is located about 7.4 km from Galle. The temple is situated on a rock and consists of a 9 m reclining Buddha. Its walls are painted with murals and the temple follows a similar structure to the Rock Cave Temple of Dambulla. This temple has been recipient of royal patronage from three kings of Sri Lanka, King Devanam Piyatissa, King Parakramabahu II and King Sri Vikrama Rajasingha.

This place is called the Yatagala Rajamaha Viharaya, built 2,300 years ago. It's a peaceful spot to meditate and unwind, with beautiful wall paintings and statues. To get there, just turn near the Unawatuna Post Office and drive about 4 kilometers. You'll see a pretty lake in front of the temple, home to some cute turtles. And the temple is always kept clean and tidy.

This is a small temple nestled in a rock so its a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. The place is tended by some lovely people and they appreciate the support to the temple, there is a 500LKR fee for entering.

If you search for tourist attractions near Galle, this would be one of them. This temple is not far from Galle Town, and therefore, you can easily go there. As its name contains "Rajamaha Viharaya," its history might go back thousands of years. Still, we can see old paintings in the "vihara geya," or shrine. One of the features is that we can see a few caves. Some of the rocks are hanging with the support of adjoining rocks. The design of this temple and its calm surroundings are also attractive. When I visited the place, I saw that forgers were also visiting it. For locals, there are also logging facilities available for those who are going on pilgrimages.

Very pictureque. Well organized & maintained religiouse place. A must visit...There is a seperate concrted pathway to top of the cliff. If youare not comfortable with stairs you can take that way.

Huge temple near the Galle city. Very calm and quiet environment. Good place for meditation. Huge rocks can be seen. Very clean and neat temple. Must visit if you are a tourist or local.

Have they started to charge foreigners ? Been here for 3 years, its always been free and I visit the temple everytime I feel a little bit sad. Today for the first time while I was sad in the cave someone came to ask me money for the entrance whick was very surprising. I said it's always been free and didn't pay. Such a bad news If they start charging I wont be able to come so often.

Lovely temple in wonderful setting. Well worth the walk up the many steps, there’s is a fee of Rs. 500 which I was happy to pay for the privilege viewing their place of worship

If you also plan to travel a long distance on the highway, don't forget to get out of the Galle exit and visit this place.A short walk from the highway exit, you will come across this precious ancient site that is so refreshing to look at.It is a temple that dates back to centuries and its value is further enhanced by its antiquity.However, the place is still managed cleanly due to its value. Can park your vehicle in its own your way and also have toilet facilities.I urge you to worship at the temple without destroying the environment.

Sri Sudharmalaya Temple is a buddhist temple situated in the Galle Fort, It's located at the Rampart Street.This temple constructed in 1889.This land donated by Mr.S.A.Wickramasinghe who lived in galle fort these days.A statue of a sitting buddha outside the samll temple faces the sea over the bastion.Inside this temple contains a prayer hall,mini stupa,a large statue of a reclining lord buddha and smaller statues.So many locals and tourists visited this temple because of its religious,cultural and architectural importance.

If you travelling around Galle you should visit the this beautiful temple in Galle Fort. You have to pass the Dutch hospital and light house and walk towards the clock tower and you will see this beautiful Buddha statue and the temple

The Sudharmalaya Temple is a Buddhist temple situated within the Galle Fort, which is one of Sri Lanka’s five UNESCO world heritage sites. It sits at the heart of the fort’s main western street (called Rampart Street) opposite the Clippenberg Bastion. A statue of a sitting Buddha outside the small white-painted temple faces the sea over the bastion. Inside, the Sudharmalaya Temple contains a prayer hall, a mini stupa that dates as far back as 1889, a large statue of a reclining Lord Buddha as well as several smaller statues. There is also a small belfry atop the temple’s prayer hall
