Awesome place to go see. A must go destination in Tokyo. It does get very busy so I recommend taking the train but there is parking available nearby too. So many cool thing to see here and do. A great day trip location. So many shops and restaurants and neat things to take pictures of.

Absolutely one of my favorite spots in Tokyo. Yes, very touristy but if you want iconic photos I'd argue this is THE spot for them. Lots of food and trinket vendors in the area and if you time it well, you may catch a local celebration which brings even more energy and food vendors to the area! As a bonus, you can purchase a range of blessings inside the temple. There are a range of Wonderful and historical items to view in this general area as well.

We went there at 8am as it is a stone away from our accommodation. It was raining that morning so maybe that is the reason why only a few tourists are there, and we pass by the stores that mostly close at that time. Lovely to see the intricate connection details, the big lantern, pagoda, and the main temple. After a short tour, we decided to buy some snacks that are filled with red beans and it was delicious. When we are heading outside the temple at 9am, we were greeted by the big influx of tourist.

The place was crowded but it was well worth it. Many stone carvings and statues around the grounds. There were lots of stands selling things or all types statues, mask, food and other souvenir worthy things. The temple itself was beautiful. A whole lotta red. You can pray or give thanks and they sell charms inside too.

The temple buildings and grounds are beautiful. The architecture is stunning, grounds immaculate, and vibe amazing for Tokyo. Coming from the main gate, you go through many vendors selling food, drinks, and souvenirs before you get to the temple itself. It's an extremely touristy in that area, and after early morning, it gets extremely busy and crowded. After you pass the crowds in the street market, it gets quieter so you can enjoy the temple itself more. So whether you go for the street vendor atmosphere or the temple itself, it's definitely worth a visit.

Visited before during the day in the past, felt like I was drifting in a sea of people, ha ha. This time I visited at night on a weekday and it was awesome; fewer people and the structures were far more vivid at night under both spotlight and moonlight. Surrounded by markets and restaurants, cool place for a late night stroll. Pagoda was my favourite structure overall, seemed like fewer people were interested in it for some reason.

Beautiful and must not be missed on your Tokyo trip. Best if you go early in the morning to avoid congestion at the temple. Arrive by 8am to enjoy and watch the shops open and begin to fill. Plan to spend a few hours here enjoying the architecture, traditions, food and other vendors. You will not be disappointed.

Sensoji is a very famous temple in Tokyo. Everyone knows this place. I often go to this place to shop at the shops around the temple or to take pictures with the beautiful scenery here. This place is always crowded with visitors especially on holidays. Many Japanese people come to pray at the shrine here. But for a foreigner like me, this place has become a favorite tourist spot in Tokyo.

This temple is a good start for new tourist to Japan. A long shopping street leading to the temple is nice for photos or souvenirs. sellers are nice, can speak English, offer Japanese stuff. The surrounding is full of restaurant and all kinds of Japanese food and desserts. Tourists are crowded in the front of the temple but getting inside will give you more air and better photos. You can also see Tokyo Tower from here.

One of the famous places must go in Tokyo, Japan. The shrine is crowded all the time; along the way to the main shrine, you will find souvenir shops where people shops for snacks and window shopping. Also, Japanese wears by travelers are also popular there. The shrine inside is less crowded and travelers are pay respect and meditation pray there for happiness and etc.

Very crowded and popular tourist attraction. I went on the weekend and I am sure it was much busier than on a weekday. I came by train and the station was very close and convenient and very crowded. Many tourists were dressed in traditional Japanese kimonos which made the experience particularly nice. The temple itself is very beautiful. There were a lot of people burning incense which I assume has some religious significance. Also there are these boxes that have fortune telling papers. You shake a container and randomly pull a stick out of it which has a number which tells you which drawer to get your fortune. The adjacent shopping area has a huge selection of shops selling traditional Japanese souvenirs and products. Also many restaurants offering primarily Japanese cuisine including Sushi restaurants. This tourist attraction is well worth a visit for the ambience alone but also for shopping and eating.

It was my first time at this beautiful temple. I was super busy, lots of people came to visit and definitely could see why. There were lots of small shops and food stalls. When you made it to the temple it was stunning. There was also lots of shine and a beautiful little garden you can walk through. I would definitely recommend coming to see this temple. You guys probably already know that this is an amazing great tourist attraction to visit. Even though the vendors are closed in the evening or at night, I recommend coming here at night as the shrine and temples are nicely lit and it is just different vibe compared to during the day. It is also less crowded for all the introverts who just want to enjoy a stroll. If you come at night when the shops are closed, you can see the mural paintings depicting the festivities that occur in the shrine throughout time. It is pretty cool.

Consider renting a kimono for an immersive experience. We explored day and night; the crowd was manageable, and lines were short. The temple grounds are free, with stunning landscaping. While there's a fee for full temple access, the partial view is beautiful. A must-visit iconic spot for tourists in Tokyo, blending tradition with commerce.

An iconic location for Tokyo. A must visit for tourists. Tons of small shops around that sell food and goodies. You have to expect crowds. We went in the late evening, so we couldn’t get inside. Everything is beautiful and well maintained. You can pay 100 yens for trying a fortune. If you get a bad fortune, just fold it and tie it to the string. On a nice day you can see the Tokyo sky tree from there too.

It’s one of the main tourist attractions in Tokyo. Beautifully constructed temple in Tokyo. Lots of shops are available on both sides of the lane in the temple. It’s also called as Asakusa temple. Night view is really awesome. During Sakura season it’s a delight to see the beauty. It’s of the picturesque spots in Tokyo. Every photographer in Tokyo will atleast have 50-100 pics of Sensoji temple. It’s the first temple I visited in Tokyo. So I personally like this place. A must visit temple to any foreigner in Tokyo who believes in god.

It’s even more amazing at night. A definite must see for any traveler/tourist when visiting Tokyo. So many cool shops around the temple as well. Great place for photo opportunities and enjoying the whole Japanese experience.

Beautiful Buddhist temple, centrally located and easily accessible by public transport. Get there early in the day for a less crowded experience, however before 10/10.30AM you’ll likely find most of the shops still closed. You’ll find public restrooms and some food stalls. Food isn’t great but not bad either.

We came here ourselves and not with a tour group. This temple and the whole complex is bigger than we realised, and it was definitely worth coming to see and so remarkable. There were just far too many people at the main gate and along the main street leading to the main great. With the benefit of hindsight, we should have come here early in the day, and not mid afternoon. Absolutely stunning and definitely worth seeing, but be prepared for all the people.

During my visit to Tokyo, Japan in 2019. I had a wonderful time visiting and exploring the various cultural opportunities the country provided. Ranging from historical landmarks, to temples, to delicious food stalls and souvenir shops that offer a variety of goodies to take back home.

This place was bigger than I expected. We visited here on a National Holiday. It was crowded but we managed to move around easily. You can visit this place in 30 minutes or longer depending on the time you have. We spent about an hour here and I felt it was plenty of time. It's worth the visit, and there is no entry fee.

I love this place. It’s so relaxing and peaceful. There’s also many stores surrounding the temple where you can enjoy buying food, souvenirs, or just walking around. It remind me of a anime and feels unreal. We went late at night and there was still a lot of people and the surrounding of this temple have so much late lights restaurants. I love the atmosphere and highly recommend coming here.

Cool place, but it's a tourist trap. You need a paid guide to tell you where you can buy things at cheaper prices. The gates and overall market is cool, but not alike any other "Chinese town" (obviously this is japanese) from anywhere. Well on that point, I wish we had "Japanese towns" everywhere.

The must visit place in Tokyo in my opinion. This whole area is worth spending a day in. A perfect mix of old, and new. You will be amazed at the age and beauty here. This is what I thought Japan would be like. It is a little crowded but everyone was so nice and helpful. Shops everywhere with awesome souvenirs at every price range. You are missing out if you don't go here. Enjoy and best wishes.

The temple is truly majestic! Its grand, solid architecture and vibrant colors stand out. Particularly famous for its colossal lanterns at the entrance, guiding visitors into the magnificent hall. Surrounding the temple are numerous shops offering food and various trinkets. An enjoyable activity is dressing up in a Kimono and strolling toward the temple for picturesque moments. You'll find several excellent rental shops near the entrance. Located just a 10-minute walk from the rail station, plan for 1-2 hours to explore the temple and its surroundings. If you're opting for the Kimono experience, allocate a generous 3-4 hours for a leisurely stroll. They also offer handwritten goshuin, making it a definite must-visit.

Very busy with lots of families. But honestly, it just gave off a lively experience. There are market shops and little food stalls along the main walkway. The temple is simply impressive. Beautiful architecture. I loved reading the signs about the history. Finding out that I had a “regular fortune” for ¥100 was honestly hilarious and nothing short of expected. Overall, it was a great experience and I definitely recommend.

Came in the morning and night, and was surprised at how different the vibes are. Hands down I liked night better as it’s more tranquil and more temple vibes compared to morning where there are so many tour groups even though we came at 9am. The temple looks nice when lit up too. Maybe it’s nicer if the sky is clear as we went on a cloudy day. See pictures for comparison. Can go there both morning and night to see the difference for yourself.

Beautiful temple providing a nice oasis amidst the bustling Tokyo city, but extremely packed with tourists. The otherwise peaceful nature of the temples and the garden are not noticeable amongst the chaotic crowds jostling for the best angle for a photo op. Leading up to and encircling the temple grounds are vendors galore - food, snacks, trinkets, souvenirs, you name it. I stopped and got some street food nearby which was pretty good and capped my visit to Asakusa by walking along the waterway to admire the cherry blossom trees. As long as you don’t mind the crazy crowds, then this is a must-see spot in Tokyo.

Went here early morning November 2023. The best time to go is really early in the day, otherwise it would be packed and difficult to go through. Lots of shops leading up to the temple but they look like tourist traps. The temple though is beautiful, even the gardens outside. A bit further out is a memorial garden dedicated to haiku poets.

Must visit shrine in Tokyo! It's really crowded during the day, but it didn't really bother us very much. I also really recommend going at night, where the shrine is lit up beautifully. There's also food stalls and shop in the streets around the shrine and the area is very beautiful. Don't miss this place when coming to Tokyo!!

Must-go place in Tokyo. Even though the place was extremely crowded, we enjoyed the Asakusa temples and neighborhood. Along the way you will find many unique vendors and fun eateries. So many people walked around with beautiful kimono. Highly recommend this place to visit while in Tokyo.

My hubby and I visited the temple during the day and at night. If you want to see the temple without the crowds (and be able to read the signs), I'd highly recommend going early in the morning (before 8am) or at night. It's an incredible temple and regardless of your religious or spiritual views, it will be worth the visit.

The temple as well as the Asakusa neighborhood are beautiful, although the latter can feel a bit touristy. It is a very popular destination in Tokyo, a must see, so even though we arrived relatively early (8 AM), the place was already pretty crowded making it hard to take good photos and enjoy the site. It probably didn't help that it was on a week-end, during cherry blossom season. By 10 AM, the place was so packed that it was hard to move around, let alone take any photos. So lesson learn, better arrive early to beat the crowd and have a more pleasant experience.

What a pretty place especially when the sakura blossomed! We came on 25 March evening and there's quite a crowd here. The weather was super chilly due to the drizzle throughout the day (almost). There are some stalls at that area which sells hot food and it's definitely tempting but I didn't try. Definitely worth a visit here in spring!

Ueno Park is a very relaxing place to go after you grow tired of the buzz of the city. The fantastic greenery, the cool breeze, the birds singing will make you fall in love with this beautiful park. Definitely a must go for park lovers.

Really lovely park. The grounds are extensive. We were lucky to see the samurai festival when we went. The park is surrounded by the zoo, museum, some shrines, shopping centres and a wonderful market.

The place is very spacious, comfortable for walking. Lots of big trees make the air fresh. It seems like it has entered autumn where some of the trees' leaves are starting to turn yellow. There is a zoo and some pretty nice museums to visit. At several points there are also places to pray. There are still many wild birds calling and flying.

The serene and tranquil ambiance of this place makes it a truly delightful sight to behold. The cleanliness and excellent maintenance further enhance the overall experience. It comes highly recommended as a must-visit destination in Tokyo, particularly during the cherry blossom season.

Beautiful park. Came for the cherry blossom season and left with so much more. Museums, a concert hall, shrines and a large Zoo will fill your day and evening with memories that will stay with you forever.

This is one of the favorite tourist spots here in Tokyo. You can see the lake view, shrine and temples here. Well actually the place is quiet better if it is spring time because the whole park is surrounded with all the cherry blossom trees. This is a must see place

Great park with long walkways surrounded by many cherry blossom trees. In 2024, cherry blossom flowers bloom later than before due to the cold blast in the last week of March. The park still attracts a lot of people to come look for some flowers that bloom early. Rental boats have very long waiting line. The lake is large and the lotus has all turned brown and dried. On Sunday, there is a second hand market and food stalls.

One of the best park to see Sakura, and it will be very crowded around that time. During the sakura season, you can see many people doing picnic in the park. This Park is pretty big as it has some temples and one of temple is dedicate to one of the famous "7 Lucky Gods." It also has the biggest Zoo in Tokyo where you enter for a fee. In the middle of the park there is a lake where you rent a paddle boat. Certain times there is a show (such as a monkey performance, etc) in the park or some flee market. Not to mentioned, they many some famous museums here such as the National Museum Nature and Science, etc, They also have a cozy Starbucks in the middle of the park. So there are quite things to see/explore in this park, therefor Ueno park is one of the famous park in Tokyo!

One of the biggest park in Tokyo to visit. Very close to Museums and the zoo with panda, this is a great place for picnic during the cherry blossom season (also at night!). You can see shrines and a nice pond as well. I like visiting also Ameyokocho, the casual street shopping area just a new walk away from this park.

Great place to refreshing your breath! Came here in a morning and found many local people walking around, even it's in rainy season. There are alot of tree and also many cool musuem nereby. Easy to go by JR train and bus. This is good place for kids and pets as well. I also found there is a local basketball competition and school festival in the middle of park. Beautiful place!

An absolutely lovely park!!! Highly recommend visiting the location, in a convenient spot adjacent to the station! The ginkgo and maple trees throughout the park were thriving amongst the beautiful vegetation. I enjoyed gazing upon the fountain and other features of the park, including the various shrine areas. There were many maps guiding you through the complex system of paths around the area, highlighting key features, of which there were many.

I spent a lot of time here just soaking in the nature. I write this in late November, and although I didn't get to see the cherry blossoms in bloom, I did see the Ginkgo trees going green to yellow. If you watch these trees as the sunset starts you would see them look like shining gold. I happened to catch a Ninja Fest event by accident, there was some really cool stage entertainment and food stands (cash only). Plus the Tokyo National Museum is here and a zoo, so you could literally spend days at this single park.

Nice little park. There’s a temple nearby and food vendors. I tried the cucumber from one of the vendors and that was no good. Flowers are about to be in full bloom. As of April 2 most of the trees have started to bloom.

Sakura aren't blooming fully yet, but it was still fun to walk around, plenty of street food stands and popup bars serving delicious food and alcoholic drinks. Festival atmosphere. Highly recommend to spend a few hours exploring, even if you aren't interested in going to any of the museums or zoo

Get off from JR Ueno station. The park is big with many cherry species you may spend 0.5 day there. There are places for a break and a drink. It's worthy to visit the national museum or animal zoo together. Photos were taken on 27 March 2023. Hope it helps everyone!

A big park. It can get busy. There are food stalls, toilets and garbage bins. The lake contained some discarded plastic containers. Come on people, put in the bins not leave it for the fish and turtles. Great place for dogs and people watching.

Despite us visiting March 30 (in 2024), the cherry blossoms had not bloomed, and that's one of the key attractions for this park. That's a shame, because we traveled all this way. There would otherwise be boulevards lined with cherry blossoms, but in their place we only saw barren tree barks. Still, it was bustling and a lively place for people watching.

Very easy to get to upon exit on any train stations. There's subway and JR rail access. The park is huge surrounded by museums you can explore. The national japanese museum is also here so you have plenty of things to explore during the day. Went here on winter time. Guessing its perfect time for spring with all cherry blossoms.

Went there in September 2015 so it has been a while but it can also be food to see what has evolved since then. I do avoid zoos since I have been to this one and for several reasons. The entry was 6 euros at the time, which was kind of shocking to me -until I realized literally everything inside has to be paid for so it made more sense. The decorations and landscapes inside the zoo's are breathtaking, I think this is the part I enjoyed the most our of everything. I truly hope these are still here today. But then one memory that is still burning in my brain is the one of the polar bear, obviously underweight and bored, with distressing behaviour. People were hitting the window and stressing him out even more. I hope by now the polar bear is not here anymore or better taken care of. There are so many more things to do and discover in Tokyo 💙

Nice zoo, good selection of animals which are kept in good condition. Signage could be better, especially for crossing between the two sections of the zoo. Feeding times are spread across the day, so even if you come 1 hour before closing you will still get to see some.

A huge, labyrinthine zoological haven; has a wide variety of animals (although a bummer due to the absence of some like the gorillas - on their monthly check-up; polar bears are viewable until 2; the tiger enclosure is forest dense so you're gonna have to be real patient to see them). It's a really great place to take your kids to, to pass the time and to enjoy and learn about wildlife. The vivarium was the cake for moi!

Amazing zoo! We wandered here not actually planning to enter but decided to check it out. The tickets were ¥550 for adults and kids up to 12 could get in for free (wow)! There are two sections that divide this zoo and once you enter, you can tell that the main attraction are the pandas. There are many different animals from flamingos, to hawks, to giraffes, to tigers, to gorillas, to alligators and so on and so forth. I really love animals so I was completely needing out and taking countless pictures and videos. They really created a man made habitat for some of the birds as there is a huge pond that have some geese living there. I guess they stay there instead of flying away because it’s to their liking. The next time I’m in Japan, I’d definitely come back. It’s also worth mentioning that at the time I’m here, there are twin pandas. The line up to see them had literally hundreds of people waiting sleuth a wait time of 1 hour. This was during the week and not tourist season so I can’t imagine how long it typical takes to see them.

A lovely zoo in the middle of a beautiful park (especially when the cherry blossom is out). The prize attractions were the two pairs of pandas, the you twins or the two adults. The queue for the twins ranged between 90 minutes and 2 hours (mid morning on a Thursday - weekends probably longer). The gift shops are geared up for the pandas so you can get some souvenirs of the visit. There is plenty to see throughout the park, though the sizes of the enclosures are small, you can see the animals when they are out on display. A good morning was spent here.

Amazing zoo, it was really well kept. Everything was clean as in all Japan. We were able to see all the animals including the pandas. We were there like 3-4 hours to visit all exhibitions. Would recommend!!

We had a great time at the zoo. The animals are very well cared for and you can see them anytime, except the polar bear who was to shy to come out. Plenty of vending machines for snacks and cold drinks and plenty of bathrooms. Great day and not expensive ;0)

Very cool maze like zoo with a ton of different exhibits. The park is large and has many things to offer for kids, adults and families. The gorillas were sadly unavailable but the other exhibits were still satisfying. Loved the elephants and giraffes. The food was fair priced.

What happened? Where is the compassion? Why are these cages so small, so plain, so boring and so run down. I literally felt like I was visiting a prison. See photos for the reality that these animals are facing. It is cruel and truly baffling since Japan is a rich and abundant country. Do better everyone. And everyone who left a positive review? Shame on you. Imagine yourself trapped in a single room with nothing but sand like the kangaroos. Imagine yourself trapped behind bars in a barren enclosed cell with a dozen others like the monkeys. Imagine being isolated and locked away without any friends like the bison. Imagine strolling the same small space when you’re a big powerful polar bear. How would you feel? Imagine a tiny cute enclosure with a stick hut, some tiny bare trees and some ladders with a friend. And all you and your friend do is do tiny laps around your tiny home all day every day. This zoo brought me to tears. Do better humanity. Don’t support this animal cruelty everyone. Don’t continue the vicious cycle until they make the necessary and absolutely needed improvements for all the animals. And yes, I know some of the animal cages were being cleaned but does that excuse the zoo for placing these beautiful creatures in prisons? Both sets of habitats were terrible. And their outside habitats were obviously too small for their size.

This zoo is next to a number of museums and the best place to experience the cherry blossom season in Tokyo. The zoo itself has a number of the big animals on display. The number one is the giant Panda and its young. You will be in queue for the viewing of the baby Panda for sure. Some of the noted big animals are Tigers, polar bears, Japanese Macaques, rhinos, just to name a few. If you plan it right, you can enjoy the Sakura and the zoo on the same visit. Overall, a great way to spend the afternoon.

The most famous & family friendly zoo in Tokyo area. Its reasonable fee, 600 yen for adult and free of charge for the children who's age is under 13, is also attractive factor. Strongly recommend bring a lunch box（a bento）as a restaurant ＆ a food is limited, furthermore it's kinda pricey.

Nice zoo located in Ueno Park. Many exhibitions are old and could do with renovating, but generally well kept. Good information provided in both Japanese and English. Extremely busy on public holidays, expect queues to see popular animals (panda queue was 2.5 hours today).

Such a nice place to relax and bond with your family in the city. I have been here thrice already, and it's great to see that they have added another area which people can explore. Food is also available in the area as well as vending machines and several rest areas, so you won't have a problem when you get tired or hungry.

We went here on a friday. It gets crowded due to school excursions and tourists. The main attraction here is Pandas. Entry is cheap. The only part which made me never want to visit this zoo is how other animals are kept. Their cages were not maintained. All animals looked quite weak and no proper ventilation for them, specially bats and polar bears. Condition of the polar bear and penguin was quite poor as they are winter animals but this shelter here was surrounded by sunlight and no ventilation. Seriously heartbreaking

Very nice and big zoo with some exotic animals you won't find in the other zoos in the area. Some points to improve are: - there must be a better way to organize the panda exhibit, we had to wait 50min to give a quick peek at the panda cubs and it was totally not worth it, I should have invested this time seeing other animals, the older panda (that didn't have a line to see) was much better and more active - some of the animal enclosures are very small, very far from the big enclosures in zoorasia. - most animals are taken away by 4pm, the zoo could as well close earlier as you can't see anything anymore 1h before the closing time

-You can tell the keepers care about the animals and the zoo. All exhibits were extremely clean and the vivariums were decorated with an artistic style reminiscent of Japanese gardens and bonsai cultivation. -They are also actively assisting in conservation efforts. ** Plan your trip/ route ** Some exhibits start closing (ie. moving animals indoors for care and feeding) prior to the actual zoo closing time. -The food is great - the panda dumpling bun was cute and delicious. -There is also a 350 year old ceremonial tea house ** Cherry blossoms are starting to bloom!

I'm of two minds for this zoo. On the one hand the zoo seems to be well maintained and the staff are polite and helpful throughout, even when dealing with large crowds of people. Where I have an issue is with the enclosures for the animals. The lack of space alotted to the display animals is depressing and makes it hard to visit overall. The zoo needs an overhaul.

I wander into zoos everywhere around the world that I go, and this was one of the more interesting ones for sure - mostly because they had a really wide variety of animals and is part of the beautiful Ueno Park. It’s true that some of the enclosures can be improved, but you can tell that the keepers care a lot for the animals. They truly do their best to ensure a positive experience for the animals. Great to see some education, conservation and rehabilitation work going on here for animals that would otherwise not have made it in the wild due to injury. I thoroughly enjoyed watching a hippopotamus up close for the first time, meeting a Hokkaido brown bear, prairie dog, gorilla and aardvark for the first time cos I’ve never seen them in real life before, and the absolute best surprise was that they had not one, but two Pallas Cats - and they were ADORABLE. For the 600 yen entry ticket, it was a fantastic day out in Tokyo that I thoroughly enjoyed. Would definitely go back again.

The space is great for humans, but not that good for the animals. Many cages are small and the animals seem obviously bored or stressed. In cold winter it was sad to see many hot weather beings in small rooms; a very artificial environment. It looked like a prison for the sake of people’s entertainment. It’s absolutely awful to have such a well developed country as Japan presenting a structure that absolutely doesn’t attend the animal's basic needs. They were all taken from their lives, families and environments; the least we can do is to give the necessary conditions for them to have a pleasant life. Ueno Zoo should make the cages bigger, even if that means holding less animals. Also, I have visited many zoos that are concerned in explaining the origin of the animals (if it was rescued from illegal trades, etc), I’m not aware if these informations are available somewhere, but I would like to see them more easily in Ueno Zoo, it is a very basic transparency policy. About how we were treated as visitors in the Zoo, all the staff was very kind and professional. The walking areas were nice. I wish the store stayed opened a little longer, when the Zoo was 15 minutes from closing, it seemed we couldn’t do anything else inside, but to go to an exit. If you’re visiting Tokyo and have some spare time, it’s definitely worth visiting, specially if you’ve never had the chance to observe Asian animals. Let’s pressure Ueno Zoo to give better conditions to the animals.

Got our tickets at the gate around noon. There were little to no lines to enter. Once inside the park was clean and spacious. Lots of animals to see. The panda exhibit had a line of 60 mins to view them. Once you get through the line, you get one minute to view the baby twins and then another minute to view the older pandas before your time is up. I remember years ago they used to have a line to have a meet and greet with photo opportunity with the pandas but it seems like they stopped. The ice cream they sell here is delicious as well. The merch is a little pricey. Food is affordable.

Zoo gets busy during spring like anything else around Japan. It’s best to come in early if you want to see most the animals otherwise they will be off display. Long queues for the Panda when it’s peak but they are very cute and worth the wait!

Great place to shop and dine. It’s right next to Ueno Park and Ueno Station. Very busy on a weekday. Found the tastiest shop for deep fried carmalized sweet potatoes. There’s many shops and eateries, just keep on going if one restaurant is full there’s more options. There are cosmetics, fresh fruits, seafood, clothing and fake merchandise you can pick up. Enjoy and explore!

Ameya-Yokochō is an open-air market in the Taito Ward of Tokyo, Japan, located next to Ueno Station. The market is approximately 164,227 square feet in area, starting just behind the Yodobashi Camera building and following the Yamanote Line south until the Komuro building. The market is home to over one hundred and eighty one shops, which sell products ranging from fresh food and fish to clothing and time pieces.

I gained entry with a university student discount. My entire experience within this massive complex was most definitely worth it. Being a history nerd such as myself, I was marvelled by the age of many items on display here, truly, even if you've got absolutely no interest in Buddhism, the sculptures showcased here would still make you wonder how they had survived for so long. I highly recommend a trip to this museum where you could learn to appreciate exquisitely detailed works of art of religious, historical, national, and even personal significance.

Definitely worth a visit. While some stuff is only in Japanese, most exhibits have English, Korean, and Chinese signage as well. Only ¥1000 for the regular ticket, or around ¥2000 or a little more if you want tickets for the special exhibit. Amazing museum with a big collection of artefacts from Japan, East, and southeast Asia , and even some stuff from the south pacific and even ancient Egypt. The Japanese collection is obviously the most thorough and extensive. An incredible collection from each period of Japanese history including gowns, artwork, statues of Buddha , samurai swords and armour etc.

Good place to get a glimpse of Japanese art and culture. There are different buildings and each has a central focus. Displays change only after a couple of years though.

A really great museum with so much to see for a reasonable price. We paid 1000 Yen per person and felt like this was well worth the price. There are several buildings with multiple buildings which had a combination of artefacts, artworks, ceramics and more! Would highly recommend a visit and come early - the museum closes at 5pm and there is easily a good 4-5 hours worth of interesting exhibitions to see.

What a fantastic place. The layout is great. The lighting and artifact display are the best I have seen so far. Wonderful museum shop. We got high quality postcards depicting japanese art for 100 yen. The museum was also a nice respite from Tokyo summer heat. However, evem when the weather is nice, I would still spend time here!

The museum is huge and full of interesting itineraries. There are rooms with cutting-edge interaction tools to discover curiosities about the past. The rooms are well signposted and I particularly liked the part on the history of Japanese tailoring. There is also a room where you can compose a souvenir with stencils and colours, using them as you prefer or reproducing famous works. It worth a visit.

Wonderful museum in the heart of Ueno. The park surrounding it is also large and perfect for a morning walk. Entrance to the museum grounds only costs 1000yen, which is totally worth it! The museum is full of Japanese artifacts and all exhibits have English to help tourists. There are multiple large buildings to explore meaning you'll have a lot of things to look at and spend a great afternoon or morning doing so.

This is an adorable museum in Japan. Too big to visit. We have been there two days. Maya special exhibition is great which is very different culture from Asian. We meet national treasure—dogu and watched movies. They have different versions language. The gift shop is great. We got some Maya, Dogu, and Egypt artifacts. Hope visit it in the future.

Excellent museum displaying so many beautiful items; you can easily spend a few hours here. I arrived in heavy rain but you can by tickets from machines or counter with cash or credit card. I queued for about 20 mins. Difficult to pick out any one class of items as so many, but I particularly loved the beautiful painted japanese screens. Description of room theme and items are given in Chinese, Japanese & English. You can download a museum guide from their website, but with the amount of information displayed in the museum, I don't think it's really necessary. The presentation of items is very good as the lighting is internal to the glass show cabinets which prevents most of the back reflection from the glass.

Very good place to learn and discover about Japanese culture in an official way! I thought I would have never seen so many Samurai Swords in my life except animations!! Some of them are even super famous ones! The staffs in the museum are super friendly and helpful, I think it's top rated museum to visit if you love Japenese culture a lot!

Must go in Tokyo, as it’s like no photos here you’ve not been to Tokyo. It’s quite a unique plaza slash market slash shrine landmark since I think it’s theme is more red and gold tone where as other Shrine or temple in Japan are whiter tone in my opinion. You can also come and sample all kind of Japanese street food there is.

A place that is uniquely attractive based on its features no other places in Tokyo can replicate. Naturally enticing throughout the season, anytime at all, this is the place famous as one of the key tourist attractions. Most visitors who had visited the place would concur with me and definitely be awed by the ambience, the landscape, the surroundings and importantly the greens in the vicinity. In fact, I don’t mind revisiting this tourist attraction in another round of my visits.

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon to Japan. We spent the first 4 days in Tokyo, and this hotel is strategically centered near hundreds of restaurants, shopping districts, and subway stations. The rooms are large for Japanese standards, and the beds are firm but still comfortable! The shower and tub is large and the water pressure is perfect! Like most Japanese toilets, there is a seat-warming bidet. The staff is very friendly and most speak English. Their breakfast is phenomenal - you get a choice of three entrees of the week, and have an accompanying buffet with fresh baked breads, fresh fruits, salads, and their famous Orange Spread and fresh squeezed orange juice. Their dinner is also fantastic, it took a lot for us to go out and try other local restaurants!

A very nice place where to see a bit of Japanese history in Tokyo. Depending on the season there are a lot of people or a crazy lot of people🤩 Around the main street, there are very nice and cozy places where to eat or drink something good. Very accessible intro to Japan! We visited late morning on a Wednesday and it was quite busy. We were still able to easily to view and do everything and I loved every second! There are less busy shopping areas nearby and we found lots of delicious inexpensive food.

Busy area with Temple and shrine. Lots of food and souvenir vendors on the way to the Temple. There is a good viewing balcony on top of the visitors center. A little bit hard to get context if you don’t speak Japanese, but the internet has good information. Many sweets are filled with bean paste.

A must visit attraction in Tokyo. Before praying, you must clean your hand, mouth and clean back the water handler. Recommended to visit at early hours as crowded after 9am. Many survenior shops before entering the temple.

I love the culture of Japan! The quality of life is unique and the History is refreshing. I always recommend coming here with family. While this is jam packed throughout the day and night, I made a point to go for sunrise. Even at 6am there were a handful of other photographers but it was much easier to capture the shots I wanted of this beautiful place arriving first thing in the morning.

A lot of tourists gather at the entrance to take group selfies with the gate, which just adds to the huge crush of people funnelling into the narrow street of souvenir shops beyond. It's not really worth hanging around as the main complex is beyond this gate and much more interesting.

One of the lovely, beautiful and magnificent temple to visit because it holds a huge historical memory in Japan and the world at large. There is a huge crowd of visitors/worshippers visiting the place on a weekly/weekend basis. If you want to experience Japanese culture, foods, drinks and gifts, please visit different shops along your way to the the temple to purchase something Japanese special from the sellers. I would strongly recommend anybody visiting Toyko, to visit this place. Note that access is free.

My friend and I went to the shrine together back in Feb! We got dressed up in kimono and tried lots of different street foods near the shrine. It was a memorable and beautiful temple compare to the palaces that we’ve seen in South Korea.

Lots of temples and shrines in Japan, this is one of the popular area for tourist. Came with tour so didn't have too much time to explore but really like the place. Cherry Blossoms were blooming on the season.

Expect to be around an insane amount of people, especially when going through the narrow road leading to the shrine that is FILLED with all kinds of souvenir shops. Lots of gimmicky fun gifts, foods ranging from sweet to savory, lively hustle and bustle scenery. If you can make it past this, try exploring the various shoutengais nearby where you will find more traditional and artisanal items only made in Japan.

One of the best shrines in Tokyo. The entrance to the shrine is lined with gifts and restaurant stalls in the middle with tons of similar stalls on the side streets. It was very crowded with tourists on the Saturday that we visited.

Seeing is believing.. Asakusa Temple is packed with not only tourists but also the locals who are happily blending into the crowd, only with one purpose, that is visiting one of the most famous Shinto shrines in the city. Stalls selling souvenirs, drinks, street food etc, you name it. It was fascinating to see even tourist wearing the Japanese costumes and walked along the street leading to this infamous shrine. I hardly seen tourist bargaining with stall owners in most of the stalls and would assume it’s not a common practice in Japan. Overall experience was pleasant and one can easily spend half a day just visiting some of the unique souvenirs shops or even dining and quench their thirst after their tour in the temple. Another Interesting scene were people stopping at booths to eagerly find out their “prospects” ahead by shaking out a bamboo lot from a canister which has a small hole. No worries, there are written instructions near the booth, just follow the steps. Each time, the canister will allow only a bamboo lot to be drawn out. Match the number of the lot with a written slip from the drawer. There’s written Japanese English translation that explains the lot you have just drawn out from the canister. Those who had drawn out a “not so fortunate” lot are “advised” to tie their “misfortune lot” onto a rack placed just right next to the booth, I have seen aplenty visitors enjoying this interesting lot drawing moments with their family and having some great time reading out their lots. Try it yourself and have faith what lies ahead of you.

You know, our guide did a pretty good job in giving how venerable these places are and the details of the statues and formation of the shrine. The history and the relationship between the Buddhist and Shinto religions that came about throughout the years. Even if I'm not a Shinto practitioner, I wanted to learn more. I came here in winter 2018. The first shrine in Japan I visited. It's very clean definitely. The bridge, the fishes, the park, the statue, everything was so great. The statues were covered by coats. Maybe adjusted with the weather/season. It located near my hostel so it took about 10 minutes walking from my hostel. I visited it at daylight and night. Both views were so beautiful. I really want to go there again one day.

It was fascinating to see big statues of Komainu (known as lion dog in English) - and recognising the differences in the mouth for the twin statues. From wiki: “A twin pair of komainu are the typical stone-made creatures associated with gatekeeping on Shinto shrine grounds. Meant to ward off evil spirits, modern komainu statues usually are almost identical, but one has the mouth open, the other closed.” As compared to Sensoji temple, Asakusa Shrine is on the quieter side. It is smaller in scale and meant to worship the three commoners engaged in the foundation of Sensoji.

The shrine building and architecture itself is nothing too fancy, considering there are many other beautiful and old temples in Japan and came with breathtaking view. However still a very recommended attraction for tourist. Various interesting street food like cheese croquette, daifuku can be found around. Also bumped into a century old sushi restaurant, Kibun located just next street.

Highly recommended. Great way to spend a weekday in Tokyo! Admission is only 630 yen and there are plenty of exhibits to keep one engaged for over 5-6 hours easy. I was there was 6 hours and I only managed to cover the global gallery in detail, while skimming through the japan gallery. If you don't read Japanese, I'd highly recommend the audio guide (available for only 320 yen). It added so much context to the various exhibits. Good place to bring small ones too as it's educational and will spark their interests in nature and science.

This museum was a wonderful place to visit to see the history and science of the world and Japan. I believe it's the biggest museum in Japan about nature and science. We got access to 3 exhibits (a special one, global and Japan exhibit). Currently, the special exhibit is about plants and they do an excellent job going into detail of what plants are and what they do for our planet. If you enjoy learning and exploring interactive exhibits, this museum is a place you need to stop by. You can easily spend a whole day in this museum. If that's not enough, there's about 5 other museums in the area.

There are two main parts, Japanese Gallery and Global Gallery in two separate buildings. It took me around 4 hours to walk through all. The roof top of Global building has vending machines and beautiful herb garden. I recommend the Theater 360 degree. The dinosaur exhibition area was also amazing! One important point is most of the exhibition name and details were in Japanese which was hard for me to understand. However, there were easy guides on touch screens that provided multilingual descriptions including English, Chinese and others.

Honestly a true highlight in all of Tokyo, you can spend a full day in here. Massive collection of skeletons and taxidermies. All exhibitions are distributed over 7 floors connected by escalators and elevators. The lowest floor is about physics and nobel prices, then you have dinosaur and other prehistoric creatures' skeletons and life-like reconstructions. One floor had a huge collection of bugs and models of big mammals. Outside is a reconstruction of a rocket launcher. The terrasse on the roof has a nice herbal garden and a good view on the surrounding city. There are some installations with interactive screens simulating you standing in a storm. Amazing place, worth every Yen. Even has a children's area. Very educational, information is available in all major tourist languages of Japan.

Earth observation equipment displayed on the second floor of the Earth Hall was especially good. I was very big museum. Not only animal museum it has science and technology things and human , plants and planets also there. Many buildings and many floor. Lot to see there including 3D theater where they show 5minutes 3D video. Also see hachiko dog here which is famous for loyal to the owner

FAntastic experience! The museum is really big, has several floors and galleries so my biggest advice is - go early! My opinion is that everything is a bit mixed up and I had difficulties to explain my 7 year old daughter how do animals relate to each other and what do they have in common. Long dinosaur floor. Real scale or near real scale models. Humane history takes a good part of the museum, but humans are only a very limited part of the Earth history so I wouldn’t even consider it, but models were there, perhaps from previous exhibitions. Loads of taxidermy.. ethically I personally would like to know where all come from since there’s really a big number. I would advice to bring a backpack, snacks and water and do plenty of small resting periods since there are so many benches around. One day is enough but you can’t take too long in each part. As for lunch I would consider three options: 1. The restaurant, regular quality 2. The cafeteria, has good options, faster and handy, has vending machines and you can have a quick and cheap meal. 3. Rooftop. Really fantastic place with tables and garden. If you decide to bring your own lunch, that’s a great spot to have a meal! Keep some budget for the shop museum. Really nice games, origami animals, animals cutters, wallpapers with animals, rubber models and so on! Have a great visit!

What an awesome museum! Several really amazing exhibits. The animals, insects, fish, fossils and more they have on display are incredible. They also have multiple exhibits on human history, and more. Also way less busy and fewer tourists, the admission is only 630 yen and I spent probably two full hours there!! Many of the placards giving details about the exhibit are also in English, but not every single one is. Well worth the cost of admission, especially if you’re already planning to go to the Ueno Park area.

Came here on a rainy day after our plans got canceled and we absolutely adored it though the staff could be a little odd at times, thus the missing star. All the exhibits are provided in several languages which was delightful. We enjoyed exploring the incredibly well-laid out floors and I particularly loved the dinosaur fossils which were stunning. The crowds were minimal, even with multiple school groups there, and most children were incredibly well behaved. Some of the exhibits on both the Natural History and the Japanese History are way bigger than you imagine; more than enough to occupy a full day. The reason for the missing star is odd. So we took the elevator down to B1 but as the door opened, an employee walked up and held his arms up saying no on repeat. We froze and he stepped in, pressed the ground floor and told us firmly, no visitors in the basement. We said okay and stepped out only to find an escalator leading down to B1 and a sign indicating further exhibits there. Other guests were going there so we asked another employee who eagerly told us to head down there and walked us down via the escalator to B1. The exhibit there was great so just a little confused by this encounter.

There is so much to see and do, even as a foreigner who doesn't speak Japanese, photos does not do this place justice. Come and experience for yourself, my 6 & 10 year old thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Even the adults and grandparents had fun. There's an amazing indoor playground for 4-6 only that requires reservations but looks amazing from outside. Take a map at the entrance and plan your journey as there are 2 separate buildings and many different exhibits to see. In order not to get lost or miss anything we just went from top to down. Park next to museum is also very nice. Walking distance from JR Ueno, very convenient.

Just what I imagined the place to be. Such a great place that gets the visitors involved in their displays. The museum is divided into 2 major buildings, the the global collection and the Japanese collection, both are very interesting and well curated. The place is packed on weekends but still has a lot of space available to roam around. Lockers are provided and cafeterias and restaurants are there when you want to have a quick bite.

As you walked up to each listed exhibit, it recognized where you were and presented the appropriate information. At the end of show, there’s even interaction with audience to win a bottle of local wine and capsule toy for kids! It’s short 45 minutes including introduction and games but very enjoyable!

Just across the entrance of Nakamise-dori you will find the beautiful building that hosts the Tourist Information center. Inside you can find all kinds of tourist information and some friendly staff who you gladly help you with information. Great place to stop by for info and views of Tokyo Skytree and Nakamise-dori Street. Take the elevator to the 8th floor for the viewing deck. You’ll find WiFi info on the second floor, and an exhibit and documentary film playing on the others - which encourage you to sit and rest. If you’re running out of phone power there’s also a power bank rental kiosk.

This tourist information center has a number of activities inside including an 8th floor observation deck where you can get clear views of the shrine and Tokyo Skytree.

Came here for the free geisha show and was not disappointed! Was wonderful watching some Japanese culture. Came at 9:50 and got my ticket for 1pm. Enough time to browse around Asakusa for shopping.

Beautiful place with great view of Sensoji Shrine with the Nakamise-dori Street and the Sky tree. The observation desk is on the 8th floor and is free of cost. It is open from 09:00 to 22:00. There is restaurant on 8th floor too.

Been to Tokyo several times but never had a clue about this gem. I did not make use of any of their services but my main purpose was the observation deck. Really loved the view.

If you're looking for good overarching views of Sennoji, Kaminarimon, and Asakusa in general as well as the Skytree, head up to the 8F viewing deck for some excellent shots in good weather. No I'm not gatekeeping this spot for good photos, just look at the shots I took. Not too many people up there compared to the crowds of people getting the perfect shot down below.

We were there to watch the Geisha show. It was great to have the opportunity to watch a free cultural show performed by the geishas. A good place also to get your breakfast at the restaurant at the top level. They have a small observatory deck with a good view of the Sensoji Temple and Nakamise Street. The food served is delicious too. And there are a lot of brochures about sights and attractions in Japan as well.

I visited three of the museums in December and really enjoyed the National Museum of Western Art. it had some great pieces of primarily west European art. It was quite fascinating to see the Rubens, Renoir, and Monet pieces. This museum is a UNESCO world heritage site, and the architect was Le Corbusier. I will look forward to one day, returning and viewing the special exhibitions being featured.

There are many exhibition works, and the exhibition space is very large. Therefore, I recommend you to wear comfortable shoes when watching. If you visit on weekdays rather than weekends or holidays, you will be able to relax and concentrate. If I visit Tokyo next time, I want to visit again.

I visited on a Kawasaki free Sunday. It was crowded by Japanese standards. It is good to know the history of the place. My expectations were a bit high given it is a UNESCO world heritage site and it did not live upto that expectations. But what I liked the most and the reason for a high rating is the effort the museum takes to be ♿. It has a display of The Thinker where you should touch and feel the statue and experience how the world is for the visually disabled. This was something unique and so thoughtful like a lot of things in 🗾 Japan.

Unlike most museums in Japan, this museum allows guests to photograph many—not all, but many—of its most popular works. Famously designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, this museum’s design provides a unique and fascinating venue for the art within it. The design employs natural lighting in several spaces in a way that’s quite rare here in Tokyo. The museum’s tremendous collections are so vast that many of my favorite works are not always on display. You should definitely always check the museum’s website to double check the most current information to avoid any unnecessary disappointments.

I pretty much only go to the permanent collection because it's ¥500 (at the time of writing) instead of a million yen for the temporary shows. The architecture is neat and my favorite room is near the end: mOdErNiSm. A good place to soak up air conditioning in the summer, and there's MULTIPLE gift shops. I've never bought anything. I think there's a restaurant too, but I'm only here for ART because it's GOOD FOR YOUr soul and bones. 5 stars for art.

We went to the special exhibition first to see the art of Spanish artists. It was very clean and quiet there. It gives more time to reflect and be more insightful of the art in front of you. Their permanent collection is big. There are many paintings and sculptures of different artists. It can get a little bit crowded but it doesn't diminish the atmosphere at all. Their cafe is really good, too. We had the tea time set and their cakes were delicious. They also had a special course depending on the special exhibition and in this case, it was the Spanish course.

Incredible museum designed by Le Corbusier with an extensive collection of Western masters (and one Foujita painting in exhibition) from names such as Monet, Manet, Godin, Gauguin, Reubens, and Renoir. However, I would suggest visiting on a weekday or perhaps at the beginning of the day to get a smaller crowd. Despite going in the early afternoon there was already quite a crowd inside (although no wait to get in) with both local and international visitors which makes it a little more difficult if you would like to appreciate the art in your own time. Definitely a place I will now visit every time I am in Japan.

The National Museum of Western Art of Tokyo Ueno Park is one of the most visited and praiseworthy museums of Japan. It is evolved primarily with the private collection of one of the early Japanese business maestros Kojiro Matsukata, the then head of Kawasaki Group including K Line Shipping. The museum itself now a UNESCO heritage which is constructed around 1960s as per the design of famous architect Le Corbusier. I liked the museum though the collections does not match many European museums. The management is smart. It has a souvenir shop and a cafe. Along with impressive permanent collections, it regularly organises temporary exhibitions.

Came for Corbs but end up fall for the artworks, did not expect Monet’s /on the boat/ so much more impressed than in digital image, amount of works well worth the 250 yen (college) ticket

I went primarily to see the building because it was designed by Le Corbusier. The Cubism exhibition was on and it was great. The permanent collection is small but worth a visit as it may be small but it packs a punch. Get off at Ueno Station. Check out Rodin's Thinker and Gates of Hell on the way in.

The collection is rich and versatile, featuring works from the Renaissance to Picasso and Miro. You’re allowed to take photos without flashlights or tripods. A must-go in the Ueno park region.

Art museum not to be missed. On permanent exhibition are paintings organised by middle ages, 19th, and 20th century. You can spot a few Manets, Picassos, and I think 1 each of Cezanne, Van Gogh and Degas. Quite a few Rodin pieces - don't miss The Gates of Hell (at the forecourt plaza, before you enter the museum) and The Thinker (within the permanent exhibition), and other Rodin pieces in the foyer before you enter into the permanent exhibition. Do check in on what is the special exhibition - it is at this time of writing on the Cubist movement. The lockers area is on the right hand side after you enter the museum, and beyond that is the museum cafe (expect a queue on busy days like weekends). I spent about 2 hours at the permanent exhibition here, just cursorily viewing. So you could take longer for serious viewing.

Only ¥500 to enter this wonderful art museum! I kind of regret that didn’t have so much time spending in this place like it has to be. If you come to Ueno and don’t know where to go just go see the exhibition in the place.

Great collection. Beautiful space. Feedback to the museum: I would have liked if the museum worked on better lighting around the paintings. The way the lights were placed caused strain to the eyes and made it quite difficult to see and appreciate the paintings properly.

Such a cool experience. We only did the paid exhibits, which was Frontier of Impressionism which was beautiful! We couldn’t take pictures there but was 2 full floors and amazing. This was the first time that all these paintings were in Japan, and most were on loan from Worcester Art Museum in the USA. The special exhibit was bonsai trees, there were around 150 of them and just so cool to see. It was definitely worth paying to see all of them. We voted at the end and I included some photos of my favorites.

Went there to check out the Isamu Noguchi exhibition: Ways of Discovery. It was amazing! The show features Noguchi’s signature Akari lighting works, as well as his sculptures. I really did’t know much about his cultural and family background and the time periods he lived in. This show gave me these contexts, and I leaned the significance of his work more. Some ideas that struck me: sculptures with metal-folding is “origami with metal”. Also, the idea of Karomi = lightness was important. Made me want to visit his studio in Mure in the future.

I wouldn't say I love exhibits here. It's quite pricy, for the amount of art works you get. Usually the poster of an event is appears to be the most exciting painting of all exhibition and the rest are just sketches and studies, or just the similar painters. If you've been to any European galleries, you'll know what I mean. In that case you'd probably might wanna pay more attention to japanese artists and morden artists. Tickets might be difficult to buy, if you do it the fist time. So many unnecessary information and hundreds of links :) What is good here - it is that exhibits change quite frequently. And I just looove the museum shop and how there're so many collaborations with the paintings and characters 🤭 Adorable.

I went to the Matisse exhibition. My friend got me a pair ticket, but she had to make a reservation with a specific time on the Internet. We went at the appointed time on the day of the exhibition, but we still had to wait in line inside the museum. I think it would be better if it was a little smoother to get in. Matisse's works were arranged in chronological order, and the explanations were very detailed and worth seeing. We went slowly and were able to see the works in an hour and a half.

There is generally a featured exhibit and these are expertly curated although, depending on the day of the week and the popularity of the current show, the venue can be crowded. As I was leaving the last time after viewing “Vilhelm Hammershøi and Danish Painting of the 19th Century”, my eye was caught by an exhibit in one of the Citizen's Galleries. The artwork on display were carved wood calligraphy panels curated by the 日本刻字協会 (Nihon Kokuji Kyoukai) [Japan Carving Association]. The artists on view included Japanese and other Asian countries and the calligraphy was in kanji, kana, Korean Hangul characters, Chinese and even a couple with English. Photography was permitted and I took many. I actually returned the following day to spend more time in the exhibit which had hundreds of articles. Some has won prizes and there were even a couple that included paper drafts with the finished artwork. The exhibit I visited in January 2020 was the 39th such show. I was informed that it was held annually at the end of January. (Note: 2021 was different because of the pandemic.) This is a show that I will make travel plans around. I will endeavor to curb my enthusiasm and post only a score or so photographs. Photography is permitted in this exhibit and most of the artwork did not have glass covering it. The 1985 sculpture in the entrance courtyard (my sky hole 85-2 光と影 by Inoue Bukichi) is kept nicely polished for selfies.

Perhaps one of Tokyo’s most visually impressive older museum buildings, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum opened in 1975. The building was designed by renowned Japanese architect Kunio Maekawa—a key figure in Japanese postwar modernism. Kunio Maekawa (May 14, 1905 – June 26, 1986) was known for blending traditional Japanese design elements with those from European modernism. If you make your way to the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum via the Park Exit of JR Ueno Station, you’ll pass another building designed by Kunio Maekawa, the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan—opened in April 1961 commemorating Tokyo’s 500th anniversary. Anyway, getting back on topic: Perhaps it’s because this is a public-supported museum, but there seem to be a lot more rules here than at other museums in Tokyo and stricter enforcement. Definitely check the website for rules and guidelines beforehand. Museum staff must inspect you before you can enter exhibitions. There are a lot of personal lockers for storing personal things you’re not allowed to carry in with you. However, as the museum staff are quite strict, these lockers tend to fill up fast during popular events, so get there early and store your belongings before attempting to enter the exhibition. Using the public lockers requires a 100-yen coin, but the coin is automatically returned to you when you insert the key to remove your belongings. So using these public lockers is essentially free, but you must have a 100 yen coin to use them.

Quite a nice place for enjoying some art and paintings. A community painting exhibition and a special exhibition were on during my time here. Admission fees apply. There's also a cafe and restaurant in the building.

Next to the special exhibitions that have an entrance fee, a good part of the museum shows pieces from art collectives, undergraduate and graduate art students. Hence, there is a great variety of art forms on display (paintings, fashion, sculptures, performances, etc.) for free. Besides galleries, this is probably one of the best addresses in Tokyo to get a glimpse into the young, contemporary art scene.

A very nice museum at a walking distance from the JR Ueno station and Tokyo National museum. I saw the 'Rome: The Eternal City' exhibition which was pretty amazing. There are 3 restaurants and some vending machines in the premises. Also, you can use the 100¥ lockers after the entrance, if you don't want to lug around your bags throughout the exhibition.

This museum has a very lovely space. I went to the info counter to decide where I will go because there isn’t permanent exhibitions and the theme changes. Right now they have a special from Rome and also “From the Depths of Ueno” by Tamana Araki. Decided to go to the local artist. Entrance to the museum is free. Some exhibitions may require paid entrance which one can purchase at the entrance.

Very nice looking museum with a nice souvenir shop. However, kindly note that while entrance to the museum is indeed free, this does not allow you to enter any exhibits and all galleries have separate tickets that have to be paid for.

Great display space. The temporary exhibitions when I visited were very good - especially the Matisse one, There are coin lockers to store your things in the entrance so you can walk around freely. You get the coin back when you retrieve your things

This is undoubtedly a beautiful building, but I was a bit disappointed you couldn't go inside to admire the laquer work within. It's done for preservation purposes, but many other places are able to let visitors inside whilst at the same time protecting the interior and fine artwork.

Excellent Shinto shrine in the heart of Ueno, Tokyo. Perfect spot to celebrate the New Year and wish for some good luck. The shrine was built and dedicated to Ieyasu Tokugawa following the end of The Warring States period and features many beautiful areas to relax all year round.

This was our first shrine. As an architect it's critical to understand that we are creative artisans patronized by those in power or with the financial backing to create the impressions of our culture. Buildings like this show us that history is written by the winners. But in this case after the abandonment of the old ways, this property was given back to the people as a national park. Not only to show that a new inclusive government was beneficial to all, but also a way of preserving a national heritage for an inhabited sculpture once with access only for the wealthy ruling class. The artisans of their time created this architecture with the intent to out live their proprietors. They may not have known that the end of their era would not bring about the demise of these national treasures, but impressed by the will of the people, they were respected and saved. Unlike the monuments of Egypt, which at the change of a Pharaoh's reign, the previous rulers deity artistic references were scratched away, pillaged and destroyed, the Japanese culture grew based on a cultural respect, something the west has long abandoned in exchange for selfishness and immediate gratification and personal ego as most western design architects exhibit. This is why Japanese Craft is so astonishing. They care little for their own labor, and more for what their wares can do to build up the collective value and beauty of their culture. It's also why for me as an American architect, I had to see Japan for myself. My appreciation and respect for their culture has greatly increased with the visit to my first Japanese shrine. Can't wait to see Kyoto, for their craft is surely the pinnacle of this beautiful culture.

I've never seen this beautiful shrine in my life. I was very impressed by the golden shrine. I felt like I was in my dream. They have a peony garden which you have to pay enter but I didn't have enough time to go. I wish I had time to spend more here because I love flowers. There is 5a pagoda you can see and if you would like to see the full of it you need to go to ueno zoo. I highly recommend checking this place out.

I love this shrine as a good shrine to introduce people to Japanese shrines; both what to do at them and why they are worth visiting. The gardens and architecture are incredible. The shrine serves as an amazing center, tying together both the local area and its history. This shrine also gets particulars done incredibly well and provides a wide assortment of talismans and charms. Signs are in English and Japanese, for foreign travellers, detailing both traditions and history.

The architecture is splendid and it is really different and colourful when compared to any other shrines. There are many food stalls inside the shrine starting from the Torii gate till the main building. There is a special entry to the temple where that would be payable. It has many sakura trees inside which gives a scenic view

One of the two World Heritage Site in Ueno Park, the shrine is iconic with the golden gate. Make sure walking in at main entrance and walk along the main path leading into the shrine flanked by some amazing little tower. They even have stand for you to do your selfie, first of it kind I have seen for a shrine in Japan. Overall surreal and amazing experience.

Ueno’s Nikko ! Temple is beautiful and the flower shows are also aside the temple ! The temple was allowed to enter before, now is sealed !

A lovely shrine in the National gardens. It is decorated beautifully with gold leaf and intricate details. You are able to get a great look from the outside or pay a small fee to be able to walk around the shrine.

Toshogu Shrine is located in Ueno Park and is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Head towards the Golden Temple from the approach, turn left and pay about 4 dollars (500 yen) to view the grounds. After paying the entrance fee and passing through the gate, you will be captivated by the magnificent sacred tree. There is a small shrine beyond that, where the leader of the 808 raccoon dogs in Shikoku is enshrined as the god of good luck and victory, so a visit is a must. When you look at the Golden Temple up close, U will be drawn to not only the beauty of the gold leaf, but also the beauty of the carvings. It is a must-see spot when sightseeing in Ueno.

This shrine is located at the center of Ueno Park It has a nice entrance of Tori gates and you will see a nice golden designed temple here. Many tourists are taking pictures here. Many Japanese are praying at the temple as well.

Lovely and lively temple in the middle of Ueno Park. I went on a Sunday, so there was lots of people, but could enjoy the place nonetheless.

The golden temple of Tokyo, built to honour the Tokugawa Shoguns. The beautiful gilded doors, the thousand lanterns and the 5 story pagoda are all great sight to admire in this historically relevant Ueno temple. Especially beautiful during cherry blossom.

Decent little spot to have a relaxing walk along the lotus pond or enjoy a pedal boat for around $5 right in the heart of Ueno, Tokyo.

This is an oasis in the busy city. You can enjoy seeing lots of lotus flowers here. Within 10 minutes walking distance from from the Ueno station.

The lotus pond was so beautiful and stretched on forever. It was such a surreal and remarkable sight. The swan 🦢 boats in the neighboring pond were ¥700 to rent for 30 minutes. It was everything I’ve ever wanted and more.

Fantastic place to relax and so beautiful during Sakura. Some bench to sit down and stare nature surrounded by high buildings (typical Tokyo). But it seems to me really different during winter. Died lotus flowers make disgusting image to the pond :(

A lively area with shrine and plenty of cherry blossoms surrounding the pond. Great area for morning or late night walk. Also a bunch of cod live here and are fun to watch.

If you are in tokyo and want to escape the city without going much further, this is one of the place I recommend other than riverside. It’s nice, have a lot of beaches near the pond, you can have a nice view in both cloudy and sunny day.
