A perfect stop on the way from Anchorage to Valdeze. The maintained trail is very short, so if you want a closer glimpse of the glacier, you need to be a bit adventurous and make your way over the rocks and rubble yourself. Make smart choices, and you can get right up to the glacier. The river runs right out of the glacier to the beautiful lake below. It is picturesque whether you hike to the glacier, or enjoy the view from the overlook.

We just went out to Worthington Glacier the second week of September, didn't realize that you can't actually touch the glacier like a lot of reviews had said. Apparently those are not updated. The woman running the show out there, greets you and takes your $5 for parking, and her dog (I think his name was Tucker??) Were super friendly and very helpful with answering any questions about the geography , etc (including that you really haven't been able to touch the glacier in at least 5 years). It's a beautiful drive out through Thompson Pass though so would still recommend as a stop over.

Amazing, definitely stop by. We saw a million salmon and sea lions were feasting away. Watch by the shore or you can also do a self-guided tour outside and watch videos and learn about the hatchery. Very cool experience. I came once in the early afternoon and again later at night and the tide changed so much we were able to walk way out in the evening. We were hoping to see a bear, but no such luck this time. :-)

This is a short ride north of the town of Valdez , Alaska, and well worth the stop. We saw all kinds of sea lions feasting on the pink salmon. Found out later that this is the largest pink salmon hatchery in North America .Check out my YouTube video about Valdez and you can hear the sea lions growling at each other.

Before reach the hatchery keep an eye open for the BEARS! on the side of the road. Yes! We did and we saw bear. We spent almost an hour just to watch the bear catching and eating some fish. At the hatchery we saw a million salmon fight to reach the top, spawn, and lay their eggs. It was Amazing! How they learn to come back where they were born! August 2020

Loved visiting this hatchery. Take your time to read the signs and watch the informative videos. The wild life viewing opportunities are great and views from the hatchery are great. Just be aware it's pretty smelly.

We arrived after hours, but there is a nice, outdoor visitor display and viewing point. Video screens and info displays show and describe how the process works. You can also see the salmon swim upstream in the ladder steps system to the large vats. We saw tons of fish swimming upstream in the weir. We also got lucky and saw a bear with her 2 cubs on the other side of the bridge catching fish, plus a group of sea lions hanging out in the calm waters nearby. A very nice bonus.

It wasn't open inside but has great self-guided tour explaining everything about the different salmon life cycles. The babies need phytoplankton which climate change is affecting. It is a miracle of nature how sooo m species depend on salmon bringing nutrients from the ocean back to shore!! Lots of animals. The over 250,000,000 salmon attreact fisherman which takes pressure off the more natural streams.

Came here early July, and was unfortunately too early for the prime season and it was closed. Did see a few sea lions hanging around, but no salmon. The hatchery has many displays showing the life cycle, eco-system, and harvest process which were quite educational. Beautiful scenery regardless and would certainly recommend if you are visiting Valdez.

It was incredible experience!! We booked tickets for one day trip in Summer on August 2020, with Lu-Lu Belle. During The trip we saw whale, seals, sea lions, otters and bald eagles. An enormous Alaskan glacier that moves quickly but is also rapidly shortening in length The Columbia Glacier is one of Alaska’s largest glaciers, with an area of about 360 square miles (920 square km) and a length of 25 miles (40 km). It descends from the Chugach Mountains in southern Alaska to Prince William Sound (an inlet of the Gulf of Alaska), where it calves large numbers of icebergs into the sea. Shrinking record The Columbia Glacier is one of the fastest moving in North America, but its fast forward movement is offset by extremely rapid calving of icebergs at its terminus, at the rate of some 14 million tons (13 million tonnes) every day. As a result, since the 1960s, the glacier’s terminus has moved backward, and since 2011 it has become detached from some of its largest tributary glaciers. The retreat cannot be attributed solely to global warming, as other nearby glaciers are not shrinking at the same pace. Instead, experts believe it is connected to the shape of the bedrock channel under the glacier.

Valdez has a rich history as people carved out trails and built infrastructure into Alaska. This museum does a good job of preserving those details. The 1964 earthquake display is an emotional tribute to that major event that changed Valdez dramatically. I was pleased that my grandkids were able to visit.

I was traveling in a broken down Ford explorer that only went 45 miles and hour.....this was by far the most beautiful part of ak highway that I saw....I travel the entire ak highway though.....dangerous though.....avalanches...and wrecks everywhere and evil kenevil bike clubs out there

This might make me less highbrow than a standard museum goer, but I like my museums with more of a fun and fascinating factor over historical detail. This place is brimming with wow moments but sometimes lacks heaps of background knowledge. The displays are designed beautifully. It’s free. It’s fun. It’s got stuff you don’t normally see. Go for it.

A fascinating collection of taxidermy, Alaskan indigenous art, and a captivating recounting of the development of mid-1900's Alaska. The space itself is a bit smaller, but the content of various artifacts and perfectly preserved taxidermy engages visitors in such a way that it's tough to just have a short visit. The pieces are thoughtful and captivating with insightful information and history. The best part of all is that the museum is free and accessible to all, but donations are encouraged.

This is a definite must-see for those visiting Valdez with time on their hands. Most of what the city has to offer is in the way of outdoor adventures, fishing and boating, so finding an indoor experience was a nice find. We took kids and they thoroughly enjoyed all of the animals on display. Adults enjoyed the artifacts and reading a bit more of Alaska history.

Beautiful place for a paddle. Lots of ice floating on lake and river. Serious currents and not recommended for less confident paddlers. Would have been better with a guide. We found lots of dead ends and did a lot of backtracking due to lack of local knowledge.

We did a 3 hour kayaking tour with Anadyr Adventures on the lake. It was absolutely spectacular. One of the best tours I took this year. We got to kayak through the ice and go up close to the ice bergs, I recommend to wrap up warm, but it was definitely worth it.

Beautiful view of the glacier ice without having to get close to the caving glacier itself. There is really only one place to stand that you can actually see the glacier (near the sign). There were people putting kayaks in on tours. Its was a really great place for photos and the silt wasn't deep so it wasn't too icky with little kids.

Went there March 12. Super windy and it there was fresh snow. Tried walking on the packed trail but some spots you will be knee deep in snow. There’s some people that go to the glacier in snowmobiles. If you go during winter, the lake will be frozen so you can walk to see the glaciers. No parking fee and there’s room for lots of cars.

Went in early January and was able to walk out on the lake to explore the icebergs and get as far as the Glacier. Saw a few snow machines out on the ice and snow. Lots of water on the ice as well. Definitely recommend having a couple friends should you decide to walk on the ice or climb the icebergs.

Fielding Lake is one of my favorite areas for recreation. I like it primarily for hiking opportunities. There is easy access to ridges to the East (entrance road) and West (across the outlet), you gain elevation quickly, and soon you’re on top overlooking a vast region. The campground is small, but rarely is it full. Cabin owners use the area near the boat ramp to park their cars as not to interfere with those camping. You can rent the public use cabin from the State Parks if you’re in the area for a more extended stay. You can set your canoe in the outlet at the campground to paddle a quarter-mile into the lake. Often the wind prevents further excursions out into the lake. You catch Arctic grayling the outlet stream, you often see them hitting the bugs in the evening when it is calm. One of fondest memories of this place is watching clouds roll off Rainbow Ridge, like a wave over the beach, I’d never thought clouds could move so quickly. Some of you may have remembered Frank. He was a camp host for years; he made people feel welcomed and kept a clean campground. I spent many hours playing cribbage with him. He doesn’t come anymore, and nobody has taken his place.

Beautiful location and very quiet. There is a boat launch in addition to campsites and picnic spots. There is a large outhouse and a hand-pumped well for drinking water, but no other amenities. Also present at this site is a Public Use Cabin, you will need to reserve that in advance. It can get very windy at this Park and there are no trees, so bring appropriate gear as it can get chilly even in the Summer. I highly recommend this Recreation Site for families looking to get away from the crowds.
