If I could give 0 stars for this place I would. The 1 star I have given is for the reception staff who were friendly, the only redeeming feature. I booked the Bowness on Windermere spa suite as a surprise for my partner’s birthday. The “suite” is the downstairs half of an old, battered terraced house. The smell of chlorine from the hot tub literally makes your eyes water before you even enter the bathroom (I dread to think what this would do to your skin), and the carpet in the ‘cinema’ / bedroom smelt musty, damp and old. The walls were covered in black marks and dirt. The bathroom was full of mould. The bed backed onto a main road and you could hear every word, step and toilet flush of the room above, so no chance of peace and quiet. The bathroom was so ridiculously hot we tried to open a window, which we discovered was also covered in dirt/mould upon lifting the blind. We also found we had been given a key to the back door which was next to the bathroom, so we thought to open this to let some more air in. I have never been more appalled in my life, than to find a huge skip in the middle of a shared patio, overflowing with rubbish, old pipes etc, god knows what else. I wish I had taken a picture of it, but at this point I was too upset to think about anything other than going back to reception. I absolutely hate complaining, I think this is the second time I have ever complained anywhere, but this is also the only place I have ever been and broken down in tears on arrival. The reception staff were polite enough but they were only able to offer us a “downgrade,” so said we would be compensated if we sent the photos to them. We were put into a room which I can only describe as Tracy Beaker’s bedroom. Cheap, tacky pink bedding and curtains, mirrors on the wall purposely so you can look at yourself in bed, pubic hair in the bath, white marks on the sofa bed (I dread to think what this was). The list goes on. To top it off the following morning, they didn’t deliver our continental breakfast, and the cooked breakfast we ordered was not only incorrect, but also stone cold. As a result I was initially offered a refund of £45, and had to plead my case to be offered another £20. So in total I paid £220 for a one night stay in a room I didn’t choose or like, (despite this room being advertised on the website for £208) wishing the entire night that I could go home. The entire place feels like a cheap, tacky brothel, nothing luxury about it except the ridiculous price tag. Fair play to whoever does the advertising cos they fooled me 👍🏼
