I want to preface this by saying that I work in the service industry, so I really try to be patient when I eat out and when I do have a bad experience I almost always just say "oh well, won't be going back there any time soon," but my dinner last night from Jerkiz went out of its way to earn a bad review. We wanted a large jerk chicken with a side of rice and peas and a large callaloo with a side of hard food, and two orders of plantains, which we ordered via Just Eat. We received an automated message from Just Eat saying the order had been refused by the restaurant, so we said, no biggy, maybe the system is down and we live nearby so lets just go get it in person. At the restaurant in Nunhead I tried to order the above, but unfortunately they were out of rice and peas, callalou, hard food, and plantains. Again, I thought no big deal, its kind of late (9:15pm) and maybe they've had a busy night, so I ordered a large Jerk chicken with white rice (£8) and a large curry vegetable on it's own (£7.50) (since there were no remaining sides to pair it with besides more white rice). After a medium wait of about 20 minutes, one of the employees called me over and handed me the large jerk chicken with rice, but no curry vegetables. I asked about the vegetables but he seemed confused so I showed him my receipt, and he proceeded to fill up a small styrofoam container with chick peas for me. I asked if that was curry vegetables and he nodded and then I asked if that was in fact a large portion, to which he seemed bewildered again, and asked another employee there who ok'ed it, so I took my food and left. The large jerk chicken consisted of a large plastic box filled 85% with warm white rice and what could at best be considered a small to medium amount of cold jerk chicken. The 'large' curry vegetable consisted of maybe two or three ladles full of extremely over-salted chick peas with some curry sauce. The chick peas, when even mixed with the white rice to reduce the saltiness, were still barely palatable. The insufficient about of jerk chicken was pretty good apart from the temperature. Judging from many of the other reviews of Jerkiz, maybe last night was a fluke of some kind. I understand that unexpected problems can arise, stock can run out, and all in all its a tough business to be in, but when these things happen it's on the restaurant to be honest with it's customers, take orders only if it can deliver, and not expect the customer to pay for small portions of sub-par food.
