Located on the grounds of Huntington State Park is the Atalaya Castle. Built in 1931, this was the winter residence of industrialist and philanthropist Archer M. Huntington and his wife, the sculptor, Anna Hyatt Huntington. It was named Atalaya, Spanish term for watchtower and designed after the Moorish architecture of the Spanish Mediterranean Coast. This walled structure formed a square with two courtyards inside, east side facing the ocean and the west side a main entry court. The living quarters had 30 rooms that included a kitchen, food service/preparation area, dining room, breakfast room, sunroom, wardrobe/clothes storage, bedrooms, baths, servants’ quarters, library, Mr. Huntington’s study, his secretary’s office and Mrs. Huntington studio. A 40 foot square tower housing a 3000 gallon cypress water tank gave enough water pressure to flow through the house. Additional buildings featured a horse stable, a dog kennel, a bear pen and an Oyster shucking shed. Rooms were heated by wood fireplaces and coal heaters. The name seems not fitting as no moats, ramparts, turrets, towers, look outs, and gatehouse are featured. More of a fortress with its single story structure, narrow walled walkways, grillwork and shutters over each window and enclosed courtyards. The bare rooms do offer some descriptive placards, otherwise it is a self-guided tour and you are on your own with a floor plan map. Cost is $2 per person, free if you have a yearly state park pass, to help the upkeep and maintains of the property. Come and tour the historical grounds, spend some time on the beach and go looking for alligators along the coastal preserve.

Located within Huntington Beach SP near the entrance to Brookgreen Botanical Gardens. There's a fee to enter the park and a $2/person charge to enter Atalaya. Since the outside is unappealing at first glance, it is highly suggested to go inside. Atalaya is the winter home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. Inside is surprisingly fascinating and will shed light on the Huntington's; her sculpting with live animals and using aluminum; he designing a sprawling Moorish-influenced compound as it was being built; and their unique eccentricities which made Atalaya impressive and far advanced for its time (1930s). It was used as an art studio and a place of rest & study. Built as an oceanfront property, the waves were literally lapping 10 to 15 feet from their front patio. Now the ocean cannot be seen as it's 100 ft or so from the house. Tours are self guided. Fortunately, we arrived at the start of an afternoon guided tour. A gift shop and restrooms are at the castle's entrance. Ample parking nearby.

Awesome! Pleasant staff. Kindly told us no drinks other than water allowed inside castle. It was a lot bigger than we expected, amazing to imagine how life must have been like back then. The park being right there is also perfect!

Gorgeous place! And self guided tours are always the best!! Only downfall would be that there was a wedding going on at the castle, so we felt a little awkward walking through the courtyard. But it was all so beautiful!! Remember it's $8 per person to enter the park, then $2 per person to tour the castle. So $10 pp.

Atalaya Castle was a beautiful place, I've been wanting to take my kids here to look around for a while and we finally did. It's $2 per person over the age of 3 years old. They were working on some upkeep when we went and I can definitely justify $2 to walk through this structure. I would definitely love to ask next time if we can picnic on the lawn in the courtyard section as it would be a great spot to go for a date day or possibly evening. The boys definitely loved it and what it would be like to play hide and seek there!!! (Would be so much fun! But don't do it lol) I would definitely pay another 2 dollars in the summer to see if it's filled beautifully with flowers.

This is an old house built in 1931 in a Moroccan Style by Archer Huntington, a philanthropist from New York. The house was used by the armed forces during World War II to patrol the coast. It's a great place to go to the beach and spend some time or the whole day. Brookgreen Gardens is also a part of this park although you would have to pay a separate entry fee. The house has some 30 rooms to explore and it's upkeep is improving each year.

its in a national park so you will need to pay to get in the park....Was a couple of dollars to walk around the actual home. Very little in there in terms of furnishing, but not sure if they will renovate it so its more like it was back when. Was interesting.

This was a very neat dwelling with rich history. My sister and our kids enjoyed walking around. So glad we had heard about this amazing home.

Was nice to walk through and imagine what life was like. Rooms are surprisingly small. I don't think it would hold attention of kids. Definitely for adults.

Its $8 a person to get into Huntington SP. Before you go to the beach and explore, this is a pretty cool side quest to check out. Nice historic grounds to walk around and get a glimpse of the early 1900s life. $2 charge well worth it to walk the grounds. It's bare and brick but you can feel the essence of the greatness and energy that use to fill this place. If you have an imagination and appreciate art, check it.

What a wonderful and beautiful place. I took my great niece and nephews ages 4-9 and we all enjoyed sightseeing. The kids treated the map they gave us as a treasure map and they enjoyedfinding a and identifying each room. It was a great day for our imaginations.

Very cool place, fascinating history. Nice place to tour. You can tell the grounds used to be spectacular. They are slowly working to restore the place. It is absolutely worth taking the time to tour this place and learn about this family and this unique home. Only $2.00 to tour..

This castle had been "calling my name" several times, on my visits to Huntington Beach State Park, before my family and I actually went to visit. The tickets are beyond reasonably priced, considering the fact that you are getting to tour a well preserved piece of local history. I found myself longing to have been Anna, or simply a worker, within this beautiful castle walls!! The staff must work tirelessly to keep this beautiful structure so well preserved. Their efforts have not been wasted or underappreciated on my part, as this castle was the highlight of my trip that day!!!

One of the most amazing places that you must visit! The history is amazing with beautiful view. We love just walking from room to room and reading the description of what each room used to be. Also, it’s an amazing place to take beautiful pictures!

Loved it. It's located in Huntington Park. Admission is $8 per person to get in the park the $2 per person additional to enter the castle. There are bathrooms, outdoor shower, gift shop, beach access and a playground. Also, save your $8 receipt for the park and you can use it to get into Myrtle Beach State Park the same day. Really a neat place to visit.

My daughter and I went originally looking for an old legend about Alice but we were installed by the beautiful church and cemetery. I loved the Spanish moss and ethereal atmosphere. We stopped at each stone and gave our respects.

My son Eric David Duvall 23, had his funeral service there. I live walking distance from there. Beautiful and precious and peaceful.

Beautiful historic cemetery with reconstruction of historic church. Definitely worth the stop! The graves date to 1700s, there's lots of live oak trees draped in Spanish moss and a local ghost tale of Alice.

Had my first every golf lesson this morning. My dad and I are in Myrtle Beach on vacation and we had Stuart Clark as our instructor. I could not say enough great things about Stuart and the experience he gave me and my dad. Had had hit on the range, then he brought us in to the computer to analyze our swings and how to properly approach fixing our mechanics. Overall amazing experience and Stuart was an amazing instructor. Would highly recommend.

Everything about my experience here was top notch. I got fitted for a new set of clubs (woods, irons, and wedges) by Bill Forbes. Once my clubs arrived, I did the 5 day school. I worked primarily with Roger Simpkins. Roger is a great instructor. He’s very knowledgeable and relatable. He showed me several aspects of my swing to work on. I was a decent golfer coming in, but for the first time in my life, I understood what it meant to practice with a purpose. I also worked briefly with Stuart Clark and Steve Dresser himself. They are also very effective if you listen to them and practice what they teach. They helped my short/approach game greatly. I was in a class with mostly more novice golfers who were a bit older than me. Stuart and Steve worked mostly with them, but I could tell the golfers really enjoyed it, and showed great improvement from day 1 to day 5. I’m a little late with the review, but felt it was warranted to give them the praise they deserve. Long story short, I went there in June 2018 as a 15 HCP. Almost three years later, I’m a 5 HCP. There’s no magic pill or quick fix. If you want to get better at golf: get fitted so you get the most out of your clubs, learn how to be coached, and practice, practice, practice.

I and my buddy have been coming every year since 2015 and enjoying a week of golf instruction and fittings. Phenomenal instruction and fittings with a great atmosphere.

Recently attended the Steve Dresser Golf School for two days during a golf trip to Pawleys Island with my dad. The first day was short game (chipping/putting) and the second was full swing (irons/driver). The staff (Stuart and Scott) were knowledgeable, passionate instructors who provided helpful instruction that was easy to understand. The use of video was beneficial in visualizing swing flaws and simple drills were taught to assist in improving technique. The environment was relaxed and fun. I just finished making a list of the tips I learned and am confident that future practice will be more efficient, ultimately leading to better scores. Highly recommend!

Had an iron fitting scheduled with Jim Kane. I was set on the new T series titleist but Jim quickly proved why you should allow your fitter to place the best iron/shaft in your hand that fits your game. I didn’t like the looks of the Paradym irons but found out they were by far the best irons for me. Jim went above and beyond to find the best fit for my swing. I was never rushed and he took time to fit me like he was fitting himself. I would highly recommend giving them a call and ask for Jim Kane.

Been coming here for 5 years, mostly using Mike Rugg. I’ve had a number of swing coaches, but this place has a collection of the best coaches I know - consistently drop 1-2 strokes per 9 coming here annually when I visit for vacation. They can help anyone become better golfers, very quickly. They identify your problem so fast and can explain how to improve your game/swing that works for who you are in a way you can understand.

We had such an amazing experience at Steve Dresser Golf Academy! We did the 2 day school - one morning on short game, one morning on swing. The instructors were great, and the student:instructor ratio was no more than 3. All of the instructors were superb. The school has many high tech tools and gadgets to improve your swing. They couldn’t have been nicer or more patient. I am a beginner and my boyfriend is experienced but we both came away better golfers having learned a ton. We will definitely come back next trip!

Me and my kids have been going to the Steve Dresser Golf School for over 10 years. I had the pleasure of getting a lesson from Stuart Clark on Saturday. Lately I have been duck hooking all of my shots, especially off of the box. Stuart broke my swing and issues down so that I truly understand what I am doing wrong. He showed me several drills I could do at home and provided with instructions on how to create and easy made drill tool out of rope. I have always walked away from my lessons knowing they had helped me correct my golf issues. I would recommend Steve, Stuart and the rest of the staff to anyone who wants to improve their game and lower their score. Keep up the great work. You are a true Ambassador to the the game and to the ares.

My husband and I had three private golf lessons with Jim Kane while we were vacationing at Myrtle Beach. The skills he taught us made an amazing improvement in our on-course performance, and it is a lot more fun to play too. Now, sometimes when my husband (the better golfer) makes an extraordinary shot, he says "thank you Jim Kane!"
