(Translated by Google) Very nice place. Like all the historical places that I visited in Uruguay until now, it needs to be developed a little more, tell a little more history, add some more attraction. For example, the Puma fountain has a button to press to dispense water, but it doesn't work. You could charge a minimum entrance fee and have that fountain work and explain that this water is the purest just coming down from the waterfall and that it can be drunk, for example. Let there be an interactive museum showing the packaging process. Something that explains why Patricia's plant is at the entrance, in short, so many things that could be done to improve. It is still worth stopping to know.

Winery
Food & Drink
Viña Varela Zarranz is a beautiful, hidden vineyard in Uruguay. The wines are great and the tour is highly recommended!
We had a lovely tour of the vineyard with Catalina. She was very informative and great with the kids. We walked around the grounds, pet the winery dogs, tasted a grape from the vine. It was very serene. We then toured how the wine is made and saw the largest barrels of wine I’ve ever seen!
We finished with a delicious wine tasting with charcuterie, empanadas and one of the best desserts I’ve ever tasted. They were very accommodating to our children as well. I recommend you take a few hours to go for a visit. The wine was great too!
Margarete B — Google review
100 years of wine history expect you in Varela Zarranz. Catalina, Varela’s sommelier, will take you far back to when Diego Ponz bought the land and start the wine journey. It is now in the 4th generation of wine producers from the Varela Zarranz family and they are still there, giving all their love and passion to producing delicious wines. Lunch at the Cava with the company of Paton, the winery’s new 4-legged employee is unforgettable.

Very disappointing: they arranged a pick-up for me (as I had booked for the lunch/tasting option), told me the time to wait, but then the driver couldn't be bothered to be on time and was *one hour late*.
I had given up by this point. It's unprofessional and shows that they just aren't really interested in generating new customers. It's probably because I was a single person, not a group - so single visitors, you should avoid as you won't be taken seriously. (The trouble for VVZ is that a single visitor might turn out to be an institutional investor, and an opening to lucrative business opportunities. Too bad for VVA in this case.)
Eitherway, this is how to create a bad reputation and destroy your brand. It's unprofessional and disrespectful. I'll avoid this brand in future.

We were here as part of a tour on our cruise ship. We were given a tour of the vineyard by a member of the family and then a tour of the winery itself. Because they are small, we got to see some of the bottling being done. Our tour leader also gave us a history of the family and their purchase of this land and some of the things they do differently from some other local wineries.
And then we had lunch - and the quality of the food was on par with our cruise meals. Antipasti platter with some breads - all fabulous and the platters kept getting restocked (and wine). The meal was beef tenderloin with roasted white and sweet potatoes (and something else I liked and can't remember). And wine. And when that platter was empty, it was filled again. I felt bad that a fair amount of food was left over. They even served dessert with sparkling wine.
My advice - if you get the chance to visit the winery, do it. We bought several bottles, drank some on the ship and came home with one.

We have now been to the Winery four times over the last few years, the last trip being in December 2014 so I thought it was about time that I should let other travelers know what a great day trip this is.
The visits to the Winery were all day trips from Montevideo, Uruguay, with other passengers from various Cruise Ships.
Using a Roll Call on Cruise Critic, one passenger from each of the ships arranged for a group of people to go to the Winery and Victoria, the owners granddaughter, who speaks excellent English, organized a very comfortable, modern, air conditioned bus, including a guide, to pick us up from the Port gates and to take us to the Winery, preceded by a tour of the City on the way.
Between 20 to 25 passengers went on each of the trips, Its no more than an hours drive out of the City and going there gives visitors to the Country an great opportunity to see a little bit of the pleasant countryside and coastline too.
Victoria seems to know everything about the winemaking process and answered all the searching questions from some of the knowledgeable and enthusiastic wine connoisseurs during the tour of the Winery.
The Winery then arranges a wine tasting session in a lovely cool, spacious and well laid out room with a selection of their different wines to taste . The Winery also provides delicious home made hot and cold snacks too. The Winery does offer options for the number of Wines to be tasted and the type of food to be consumed, catering for people with food allergies too..
The very reasonably priced Wines were available for purchase after the session as well as a small number of other souvenirs being available too. The last Cruise Ships we were on organized a visit to a different Winery, without a City Tour, and charged substantially more than this Winery charged us.
Next time we visit Montevideo, we aim to go back there again, its a great day out

Certainly one of the prettiest vineyards in Uruguay. It feels more European than other, more 21st century vineyards, like Garzon or Viña Eden. You drive up a tree-lined gravel road to the winery, which feels hidden off the country road. Wines are pretty good. Also in its favor, it is one of the closer vineyards in the Montevideo area.

Pizzorno winery is a family-owned and operated estate winery located in the rolling hills of Rutherford, New Jersey. The winery produces premium quality still wines and sparkling wines, as well as vinegars and olive oil. The wine tasting experience is unique due to the fact that the wines are matched with complementary finger food. This allows guests to experience different flavors and textures throughout their wine tasting.

A really nice market and place to go try new food, buy your groceries for the day, fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry and so much more.
There are mini-markets, a pharmacy, two nice coffee shops, various fast food places, pizza places and a whole bunch of other choices for your lunch or dinner.
Is also a nice place to visit for a while, it’s big and spacious. It has a place for kids, however it’s not the best place to bring kids specifically, it’s more of a family plan.
The only downside is that it is a noisy place when it’s crowded, acoustics don’t help the space when there too many people talking together.

To me, it's an ok market but nothing mind-blowing. I expected it to be bigger and with more variety of products/stands. Very cool local market hall in Montevideo. Visited in the mid morning as things were just starting to open up. It's a mix of nice cafes, hip restaurants, fruit and vegetable sellers, and touristy shops with handmade goods. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the city as a visitor. I think coming a bit later in the afternoon would be a more lively experience but if you don't like crowds the morning is good too. Had an excellent cappuccino and lots of fun exploring the different shops.

Solís Theatre (Spanish: Teatro Solís) is Uruguay's most important and renowned theater. It opened in 1856. The building was designed by the Italian architect Carlo Zucchi. It is located in Montevideo's Old Town, right next to the Plaza Independencia. The theatre was named after the explorer Juan Díaz de Solís,who was the first European explorer to land in modern day Uruguay.
In 1998, the government of Montevideo started a major reconstruction of the theatre, which included two columns designed by Philippe Starck. The reconstruction was completed in 2004 with the re-opening taking place in August of that year. Acoustic studies of the rehabilitation project was entrusted to Jerome Falala of the French studio Avel Acoustique.
Tomás Giribaldi's La Parisina, considered the first Uruguayan national opera, was premiered at the Solís on 14 September 1878.

A free afternoon dance concert. The staff is very mindful of the elderly with canes and disabilities. There is a ramp at the entrance. This true of all Uruguayan venues. The coffee shop is my go to place. Sit on the steps and watch the busses go.

Gorgeous theatre. I took the guided tour, which was offered in multiple languages. It starts at 4pm but I suggest arriving at 3:15-3:30 as there’s usually a line to get tickets. It cost $150 for foreigners and they took cash. Tour was about 40 minutes and a great way to learn the history of the theatre and see its interior

It’s a oldest theater in South America.
They have guide tour by Spanish, Portuguese, and English. As of May, 2023, it starts from 16:00, and duration is around 1 hour. You can buy the ticket without booking. In our case, only 5 people joined English tour. But the guide explained theater history and characters with fluent English. If you go Montevideo, Solis theater is one of the best option.

Sales began at 15.45 so we had to wait for a while. Tour lasts approximately 40 min. We had one in English with guide Paula. She was very nice and friendly. Her English was very good and she even offered to take pictures of us. I recommend this guided tour to everyone visiting Montevideo. Tip: Wednesdays guided tours are free.

ESTABLECIMIENTO JUANICÓ BODEGA offers a delightful experience for wine enthusiasts. The vineyard provides a brief but enjoyable tour, with an opportunity to indulge in fabulous wine tasting and lunch. Visitors can savor generous portions during the tasting, set against a picturesque rustic backdrop. While it's quite a drive from Montevideo, the antique charm of the place adds to its allure.
The vineyard was just a vineyard and the tour was brief, but the wine tasting and lunch were fabulous! Generous tasting portions (and more if you wanted it), plentiful food and a gorgeous rustic setting. A surprising excellent cabernet. It should be noted that this winery is quite a drive from Montevideo.

Teatro Bartolomé Macció is a traditional theater in the Uruguayan city of San José de Mayo. It is the most architecturally important building in the Maragata capital. It has a capacity for 700 spectators distributed in a horseshoe format of the typical Italian opera house. Its Murano glass chandelier and original Italian plush curtain stand out. We stayed at the campsite that is on the edge of the beach and it was spectacular. The good thing is that it has lighting on the street, not on the plot, which makes it magical. Kiyu, 80000 San José, Departamento de San José, Uruguay
The Colony of Sacramento, situated on the Rio de la Plata opposite Argentina, is a significant relic of a time when Portuguese Brazil sought dominance over Spanish territories. Originally established as Nova Colonia do Sacramento in 1660, it served as a military outpost and controlled the river mouth within sight of Buenos Aires. This strategic location also safeguarded Brazil's southern border.
Beautiful old town of Colonia del Sacramento is definitely a place worth of seeing. I visited it in the spring, so there were blossoming plants all around. It is also a quite touristic place, with many small shops everywhere. Old fortified part is not too large and can be explored thoroughly in a day. Shops accept Uruguay pesos and as well US dollars, many of them also euros, Argentinian pesos etc. Paying with card is usually available.

We had an awesome time at the hacienda “La Colina” in the wheat fields, we could see the ships going up to the Río de la Plata river from the back porch. Words cannot explain the peace and beauty of nature in that part of the world, also unique flora and fauna. About twenty minutes from the hacienda we visited one of the oldest cities in Uruguay, Colonia del Sacramento. The historic town of Colonia is Patrimonio de la Humanidad, UNESCO. Old faroles, low houses, adoquine streets, singular beauty. The vegetation is full of eucalyptus, sauce llorón, ombu, pines. The story tells of the indigenous people who lived in that area were the Chana/Timbu and also that they were almost exterminated or enslaved by the Europeans. You can notice the Portuguese and Spanish influence in this town. Beautiful handmade crafts for sale, paintings, leather carvings, exquisite jewelry, lots of amethysts. Colonia is surrounded by artisan farms where you can find fresh and delicious products such as dulce de leche, the famous Colonia cheese, as well as several vineyards. Awesome sunsets! Great food! Definitely a unique place where you can live without running. A diamond in South America. Love it!

I'll never travel to Buenos Aires without this trip planner again
The lighthouse in Colonia del Sacramento, dating back to the 1850s, offers a chance to explore its historical significance. With a staircase leading to the top and informative displays, it provides visitors with insights into the city's colonial past. In addition to the lighthouse, tourists can enjoy exploring seven other museums in Colonia. These museums showcase the rich history of Portuguese naval expeditions through exhibits of jewelry, uniforms, and old maps.
Nice old colonial town, there are a lot of bars and restaurants, you can climb the lighthouse, walk the original streets and spend easily half a day waiting perhaps for the ferry to Buenos Aires. The old town is situated just a few blocks away from the ferry and bus terminal.

I went to visit Colonia for the afternoon so I could renew my 90-day Visa for Argentina. Booking a round trip on Buquebus was very easy to get to Colonia. Yes, Uruguay is more expensive than Buenos Aires! However, you can still pay with Argentine pesos in Colonia and DO NOT NEED to convert your pesos. The price on the check at the restaurant I ate at worked out to be the same no matter how you paid.
Colonia is very old and a great place to walk around for a few hours and learn about the history of this city. There are a lot of places to eat and also to buy souvenirs. It does not take more than a 2 or 3hrs to casually walk around to see the historic parts. They have done a great job at preserving it!

Great all round views from the top of this lighthouse. There are two levels, if you chose to go upto the second top level, make sure you have a good head for heights. It's a narrow tight staircase and little space to move around at the top. Additionally the railing around the top barely reached waist level for me. It would be all to easy to lose your balance if you lent over too far and fall. Keep back from the edge. Great views out to sea and across the old town. You can pay the small entrance fee in either Argentine or Uruguay Pesos.

The light house in itself is very beautiful with a different design, most of the lighthouses are cylindrical in shape but this one is rectangular at the bottom and cylindrical at the top. We have to pay a nominal amount to go inside around 30-50 peso per person and they will allow very few people at a time . You will be allowed to go to the top rectangular part of the lighthouse first and then after sometime they will let you go to the topmost part and the view from there is breathtaking . You can see the whole Colonia from top of the light House .

What a handsome thing. The entrance ticket costs 1 USD, I had with me a 100 banknote and the ticket lady wasn't able to give me change. Pity, wasted opportunity.

The dishes are large, in size and abundance, which results in a cheap price per dish. Although the bathrooms are not their forte and they need to be improved, the environments for diners are warm, with exposed stone and large paintings.

A chicken that was not well cooked. Raw inside. A poor quality wine at $550. A snack of cheeses and cold cuts that were bad for what they cost (more than $900), and when we arrived they invited us to have some cheeses at the door that were very good. The roast dish was very good in volume. They took quite a while. Upon arrival they offered us a 15% discount but at the time of paying it turned out that the promotion was only counted. We told him and he accepted his mistake.

Tourist trap verging on outright fraud! The prices here are simply astronomical. This place is a tourist trap. We should have taken heed of the fact that the place was empty and we were the only diners, but it looked like a nice enough spot. The food was passable but unremarkable and lacked seasoning or flavour. When the bill arrived and we calculated the cost it was completely unreflective of the standard of the restaurant. Even for a tourist -trap town, this was intolerable. When we came to pay we were told the card machine had 'run out of paper' despite having confirmed repeatedly when we arrived that they accepted card payment and being the only diners in the establishment! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

HORRIBLE!!! Please do not go here!!! Worst food ever: salad with tons of mayo but no dressing, oily vegetable wok, greasy calamary rings and worst of all DOG HAIR in the food (because there is an actual dog in the kitchen!!!). And the prices were tremendous (paied about $130 for the 4 of us and didn’t even order anything fancy). We complained, but they would not give us any discount under any circumstance. We have never eaten in a worse restaurant ever!!

SCAM! It is beyond tourist trap, is a complete scam. Is by far one of the worst experiences I have ever had! We asked if we could pay with credit card and they said yes and just when we had to leave they said they had a problem, they knew we were in a rush for the ferry to go back to Buenos Aires. Food was really poor quality, it was tasteless, prices were outrageous, as if we weer dining on a Michelin star restaurant but with spiderweb on the chairs and food without flavour, they charged for bread they didn't give us, and so on.
Really terrible place, they charged us service compulsory it was a complete scam.
Lassla Esquivel — Google review
Save your money, not worth it the outrageous prices for everything. Only redeeming features are the view and they have dogs. Food was below average. Proprietors sat outside and smoked the whole time we were there. Prices are just silly expensive. Rather go somewhere else where you’ll get what you pay for, although it will be difficult because nowhere else charges so much.
James Dewar — Google review
Turist trap!!! Don't there the food is bad and prices are outrageous. We order a "trucha" that tasted more like a farm salmon. All fish is frozen. We spend more than $USD70 for a very bad lunch.

DON"T STOP. The food is not edible. We ordered ravioli's and couldn't even eat one that's how bad they were. I have had canned ones that were better. The prices are high, the food is bad, the service is bad. The only good thing was the location. Again don't stop.

You need to buy a ticket to access. You have the option of buying a tour.
We had a picnic on the top floor. Pet friendly. Friendly staff. Had a great time.
On the ground floor there are tables, chairs and sofas you can use freely. There is 1 or 2 stores, I believe one sells wine.

Beautiful place, we entered without a guide, I think it is not necessary, but it is worth entering, 80 pesos per person and see inside, half refurbished and the other half as it was before. It is beautifully arranged, there is a room with information about the bullring, in the middle where it would be the bullfighting ring. There is a huge tent and they say there are bowling alleys. We went on a Sunday morning and that was not enabled or open, perhaps at another time to the west.

This place have beer rebuild to what you see today. For years was neglected and the entry was prohibited because structural danger. Now it's this beautiful plaza de Toros that revives the extensive history of the city. The guided tour was very informative and tells the history of the plaza and what they did to rebuild it. The entry fee wasn't expensive definitely a must see in Colonia.

Se encuentra a unos seis kilómetros del centro de Colonia del Sacramento y se puede llegar en bus.

Plaza de Toros (bullring)It's nice to see these places to compare times in history and the humankind evolution, since here, it shows that animals are taking into consideration in some way. I had the oportunity to visit "La Plaza de Toros" bullring is the translation, in 1985-86 when anybody had access to the ring, and it was falling into pieces because it was abandoned.
I rent a bike and went along the riverside in 10-15 minutes. Once in the Plaza de Toros they allowed me to enter it and locked it under a stair. A tourist guide told us the history of the place which is gorgeous and enigmatic.

If cricket was a thing in South America, this could be an absolute paradise. A 2 test away tour of Uruguay, starting in Montevideo and culminating here in Colonia's former bullring, would be simply elite. Already has a wine shop ready inside, just needs a few ex-pats to get Test status in the next 50 years.

The Museo de La Plata is an impressive museum of anthropology, geology, zoology, palaeontology and botany housed in a beautiful Neo-classical building. It boasts a vast collection of prehistoric artefacts, dinosaur bones, animal skeletons and taxidermy animals. The first floor is the main attraction with its world class display of dinosaurs. The museum also features exhibits on ancient civilizations such as Egypt and the Inka empire.
Amazing museum, but a complete pain to reach (assume 2 hours from Buenos Aires)

The La Plata Catedral is an expansive, neo-Gothic cathedral with a room for 7,000 people and an interesting museum on the construction of the building. The twin steeples were completed in 1999 and the design was inspired by medieval churches in Cologne and Amiens. The cathedral has fine stained-glass windows, gargoyles and polished granite floors which are accessible in the basement through an elevator ride.
Use the app available on your phone to learn about all the details inside of the Cathedral.

You don't expect this kind of architecture in South America and you definitely don't expect a Cathedral with this level of detail to be made of brick. The design was incredible and the history behind the building is unique as well. The interior is just as grand as the exterior and has a holy aura to it. Definitely worth stopping in for a minimum of 30 minutes. The stain glass alone is worth it

La Plata Cathedral is a Neo-Gothic construction that took over 100 years to finish. It was completed in 1997 when they added the needles. If it's a clear day, I personally recommend taking the full your with the elevator ride. You can actually see Rio de La Plata (La Plata River) and appreciate the disposition of streets and green spaces.

The picture doesn't do it an ounce of justice. What an incredible monument to God, to Mother Mary, to honor Mater Dolorosa, the sorrow she felt.
When I entered the cathedral I was owe struck, slack jawed and staring as I walked down the middle aisle, The arched ceiling so high I had to raise my head and lift my eyes heavenward, like the stars above the impossible pillars and glass murals stir humility in the heart, giving a fractional glimpse of the infinite sublime. I wonder how many people it has inspired, igniting dormant faith.

Plaza Malvinas Argentinas is a splendid cultural center that provides an opportunity for relaxation, historical immersion, and mate drinking. The area is adorned with numerous benches, playgrounds for kids, trees offering shades, and a Cafe. This stunning plaza commemorates the soldiers who gave their lives while safeguarding Argentine land. Though the Cafe has toilets, public restrooms would be preferable to avoid unpleasant experiences.

Recreate your inner child at República de los Niños, an indoor and outdoor park in Argentina that boasts 35 miniature buildings. Catering specifically to children, the park features a train station and firehouse among other kid-sized structures. However, arriving early is recommended as the single entrance can become quite congested. Despite some buildings needing restoration, visitors are surrounded by nature in a magical setting with charming little palaces. The park also offers rides, dining options and sometimes performances for added entertainment.

It has a beautiful and enormous park to walk and rest under the trees! The buildings create an enchanting atmosphere, but I wish they were better taken care of; the whole place is such a relic! Also, most of the attractions have to be paid in cash, which I think should have an option to be paid by card. This summer (2024) has been excruciating with the mosquitoes invasion, so it made the experience quite unenjoyable. I haven't asked about food, so I don't really know if there are veggie options or gluten free options.
