Izakaya Kaz
Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Izakaya Kaz is a Japanese restaurant located near The Pub, marked by a set of red lanterns. Despite initial difficulties in securing a table, the friendly staff eventually accommodated the guests. Although there were some language barriers and apparent understaffing, the service remained attentive. The sukiyaki set for two, along with drinks and dessert, amounted to 10,200 for two people.
We didn’t go for the hot pot instead we had a mix of dishes. The four of us shared plenty dishes and tried different japonese drinks. We loved it. After 10 days in Japan and always looked at trying different food and we found this place one of the best we have been to.
Florian Guillemard — Google review
Great food. Book aheqd though. They fill up quickly.
Nate Wilson (natskis) — Google review
This place shares a building with The Pub but that’s where the similarities end. The food at The Pub was a bit disappointing, while at Isakaya Kaz, it was decidedly better. The prices are higher at Kaz and you will need a reservation, it’s still probably the best of the 2 places. The karaage was fantastic and the sake flight was amazing. They do have a lot of fish so if that’s not your cup of tea then The Pub might be more to your liking.

Super good sushi and tempura. The okonomiyaki was very rich and a little overwhelming

The best meal we had in Hakuba. Delicious food and super attentive service.
Anthony Hughes — Google review
Really delicious, especially for a restaurant that caters specifically to hotels! We did the sukiyaki and thought it was incredible.
Naomi Lopes — Google review
Amazing food and amazing service. Definitely book ahead and make a reservation because this place is worth it. The sashimi is locally sourced and so fresh, you can taste good produce when it comes to sashimi and nigiri. Service were so friendly especially for foreigners and their sake options were stellar. Do hope they add more hot sake to the list, but the one they had was amazing! Wish we could book again but it’s very busy for a good reason.
Erin — Google review
Great service and friendly staff but we did not enjoy the food so much. We tried both the Kaz and Mansaku and both used the same shabu beef quality which was horrible. Convenient since we are staying at the hotel. But definitely not a repeat.
Myia Garcia — Google review
When we couldn’t get a table at Mansaku, we were looking for another Japanese restaurant nearby. We saw a set of red lanterns next to “The Pub.”
At first the receptionist said the restaurant was full, however, we could see empty tables. We insisted and she finally agreed to seat us (otherwise, I would give it 5-stars).
The staff has limited English but was very friendly. Although seemed short staffed for a full restaurant, they were attentive.
With a sukiyaki set for 2, with drinks and dessert, we paid ¥10,200 for 2 pax.
The food was excellent, the sukiyaki sauce was not overly sweet or salty.
Warning: the ventilation is not great, so your clothes will smell!

The ski lift system was efficient and well-run, making it easy to get to the top of the mountain and enjoy the runs. The resort also had a good variety of ski rental equipment and a ski school for beginners.

If you buy a lift ticket at 7-Eleven, you can buy it for 3800 yen. Rental is also very cheap at 2600 yen on weekdays.
There are various courses, but there are few signboards and it is difficult to decide which one to go for the first time.
The single-lift course to the summit is very fun because it looks like Irohazaka.
There were very few customers and it was almost reserved,
There were several groups coming from school, and the lifts and cafeterias were crowded when the timing was batting.

Shibata Castle Ruins, a flatland-style castle situated in the heart of the city, is a well-preserved piece of Japanese history that can be visited seasonally. Despite being one of Japan's smaller castles, its informative staff offers free admission and guided tours of the castle grounds. Although it only takes 15-20 minutes to explore this small but quaint attraction, it may not be as impressive as other competing sites in the area.
This is the famous castle in Niigata. Its a bit small compared to other castles in Japan but it is still nice thou. There is no entrance fee and the staff are really nice. You can see three separate mini castles when you go inside
Ardith Telewik — Google review

A very nice but small piece of Japanese history that has been preserved very well over the years. It is one of the smaller castles located in Japan. I found it a little disappointing to see how some of the castle property is currently occupied by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. There is no fee for admission and the workers will give you a very informative tour of the castle grounds.

Just beautiful. There is more structure than the 'ruins' label suggests. This is a very beautiful and calm spot tui enjoy.

The place is quite small, no entrance fee and very helpful staffs. It only requires 15-20 minutes to wander around. If you have not so full itinerary, you could visit here.

It's a nice looking castle but very small. Also, not all buildings are open to the public. The biggest building seems to lay in a military base

The castle is absolutely beautiful, especially during cherry blossom season in spring and when the leaves turn colors in fall. You can tour the inside for free, and the greeting staff are always friendly and helpful.

Minato Marche Pier Bandai is an energetic indoor setting that offers a variety of fresh seafood, meat, and locally sourced produce. Although smaller than the Tokyo fish market, there are still numerous excellent options available. Instead of cooked seafood restaurants, there are more sashimi and grilled fish related establishments at this location. In addition to the fish market offerings, adjacent vegetable and meat markets provide additional choices for visitors.
I was in heaven. Good sushi with thick slice of fish, lot other things to taste. All fresh and very affordable. Does not smell like other fish market. Very clean for a fish market. I recommend it. Do not miss this place. Not a very big place. Also good coffee and ice cream.
Valois Nadeau — Google review
Definitely must-visit place for visitors, especially you like local marketplace and casual restaurants. It is like in between old marketplace and fancy marketplace. There are fish market, meat market, and grocery store. Very clean and some options for restaurants as well. Closed to Sado ferry terminal.
Sooncheol Kwon — Google review
A collection of stores ranging from a fish market to local produce to butchery to an alcohol section. I got some sashimi from the fish market which was decent, fresh however the selection was lacking. The alcohol store is really well stocked and those who need their boozy fix can definitely hit this place up!
Tsunderin ! — Google review
This is a nice weekend adventure. It is a small fish market with lots of variety. You can purchase fresh seafood from the market and cook on sight. Be sure to check availability and reservation of BBQ and seats before hand. BBQ season starts in summer months. I enjoyed original flavored ice cream at Hang Loose. The seasonal flavor was Tomato at the time.

I went there on 8/4 ( Friday ), the day after Nagaoka Matsuri.
The opening time is 1030am and I arrived on 1045am. There was a long queue at that time. After the queue, I took the ticket on 11am and the number was 88. I entered my japan phone number so I could walk outside of the restaurant, I got the phone calling on 1315pm.
I waited until 1345pm to have the seat. I could take the sushi on the conveyor belt or ordered directly to the sushi master.
The quality of food was good, I will recommend 特大赤エビ, エビフライ and pudding ( original favour ) [ XL Red shrimp. Fried shrimp and original puddings ]
Cost ¥8800/ 2 adult ( we both ate so much )
I left on 1430pm.

Pier Bandai fish market 新潟魚市場 in Niigata is not as big as the one in Tokyo but still with many nice choices. But unlike in Tokyo where there are a lot of restaurants where cooked seafood is served, here are more related to sashimi and grilled fish. Next to the fish market, there are vegetable and meat markets and there are more restaurants. Yet, price is definitely a lot cheaper here. After all, Niigata is a small compared to Tokyo :)

Buy sashimi, oysters, cooked food, draft beer from the market and eat on the deck chairs and enjoy. No stress from queuing at the restaurants.

Really fresh seafood at reasonable prices. Outside area has common chairs and tables where you can eat the food you purchased from the fish market. There’s also a supermarket that sells local produce and a few restaurants and coffee places. Worth the visit. We took the city loop bus to get here.

There’s a lot of restaurant there, not only selling fish but also there’s a liquor shop, meat shop, and vegetable shop. But definitely you should try a sashimi set there, very fresh and cheap compared with Tokyo

imo its best to be at the top in the late afternoon and to be there untill dark to see the city lights.

Free observation tower with a great view and fantastic place to catch the sunset. They had an event cafe at the time we went (snoopy) though the cafe closed at 1830. The elevator with the window is on the second floor heading to the hotel Entrance on the left nearest the wall.

Beautiful views of the city and beyond. Be warned that if you go at night the lights are a bit bright so they reflect off the glass into your camera if you take a picture. At least when I went there was some private event preventing the north east side from being viewed. The rest of the view was still very nice. Also be sure to visit the toilets as the east view is visible from there!

Cave D'Occi Winery is a countryside destination that offers tours and samplings of its wines, as well as an on-site restaurant and bakery. Visitors can also enjoy art exhibitions at the gallery. It's a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, offering a peaceful café setting with stunning views. A stretch located in Niigata where all the wineries are concentrated. It’s a pity that when we visit, the season is already over for grapes and all we see is fruitless vines.
But we visited the restaurant/ cafe and enjoyed a relaxed afternoon lunch. The ingredients used were fresh and the taste was awesome. Service was exemplary as well.

There is a panoramic view of Uonuma on one side, and Mt. Echigo-Komagatake on the other. The sense of accomplishment is amazing. It looks like it would be perfect for practicing for Mt. Tsurugidake.
By the way, please note that the ropeway parking lot does not open until around 6:30.

(Translated by Google) I've been coming to Uonuma once a year for the past 10 years, but the weather hasn't been good and I can't see Mt. Hakkaisan, so I haven't had a chance to climb it until now. It had rained the day before, but on this day we could see the mountain, so we changed our plans and climbed the mountain. Due to time constraints, it was only 2 hours, but the autumn leaves were beautiful and I was satisfied. There is a lot of snow left in early April, making it difficult for someone like me to climb.

The shrine complex of Yahiko Shrine is situated in a lush forest at the base of Mount Yahiko, and boasts a rich history spanning centuries. The annual chrysanthemum festival, currently ongoing, showcases an array of exquisite blooms as well as impressive bonsai and floral arrangements. It's truly a sight to behold seeing the shrine surrounded by such natural beauty.

About 15 minutes walk from Yahiko Station.
It was a visit in the rain, but there were many worshipers. There is a mountain behind the main shrine, but when the rain stopped, the fog turned to the sky and it was a mysterious sight.
If you go by train, there aren't many trains, so it's a good idea to check the time.

There was a flower exhibition when I visited. So there was a whole bunch of flowers on display. The shrine itself is decently large and even had an animal pen with deers in there! The shrine is surrounded by lush greenery and exudes calm and soothing peacefulness. It is however quite out of the way to visit as it requires a few train changes and limited ways of leaving. Making the trip a day commitment. But it was well worth it for me!

Go to Yahiko station and then walk about 20 minutes according to the available signs.
Yahiko station is an old station, still retains the old architecture and does not have an automatic card check counter. There will be staff to check train tickets.
There is also a treasure that is a 2.3m long sword called Shida no Otachi, the longest sword and included in the list of Cultural Property of Japan.
In particular, in the temple grounds there are two stones called "Hi no tama ishi" (火の玉石) which means "stone of fireballs", or commonly known as "Omokaru no ishi" (重) 軽の石) means "light heavy stone". It is said that when standing in front of these two stones, pray, then if you lift the stone and it feels light, your wish will come true, but if it is heavy, the wish will not come true.

Came here by car. Easy to get to. Huge parking space, easy access. The shrine is big and really nice to visit, the personnel (mikos) friendly and helpful. Just don't expect English. Japanese is required, however broken it may be. There's also a tourist district which we took a wide berth around because I don't trust these kinds of places in general.
Anyway I wanted to buy Omamori and the miko was nice and patient enough to explain to me what the difference between them was.
We came back two days later by train. More of a pain, but still doable. Also the train station looks amazing. They're really trying to sell the whole shrine asthetic.

The shrine is solemn and good, but there is a ropeway in the back and you can go to the top of the mountain. There is also a shrine at the top. You can climb without using the ropeway, but it is impossible if you feel lighthearted. There is an observatory tower at the top where you can go up to the same height as the Sky Tree (634m), and you can enjoy a very good view of Sado Island.

The sacred shrine of Yahiko City is more than 1300 years old and is considered a national treasure. The highlight is that there is a large red torii pillar. Inside the shrine is full of mountains, small and large, with nature all around. Inside is a treasure display hall. There were many people coming to pay respects. There are sacred items to buy as souvenirs. I went in November. There was also a big flower festival that was very beautiful.

Saifuku-ji is an ancient Buddhist temple that dates back to 1534. It is renowned for its exquisite and intricate wood carvings, particularly in the Kaisando annex, which features a stunningly detailed ceiling. The main temple and gardens are also noteworthy attractions. Visitors must pay an entrance fee of 500 yen to explore the temple's interior, where they can marvel at the beautiful wooden roof and admire Japanese-style depictions of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

The Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art showcases 20th-century Japanese art and features a serene sculpture garden, while the Niigata Prefectural Museum of History displays ancient Jōmon pottery. To the north, visitors can explore the majestic Yahiko Shrine at the base of Mount Yahiko, accessible by a scenic cable car ride.

I'm a beginner to skiing and struggled alot even on the beginner routes. If you are a beginner, I recommend buying just 1 ride up the ski lift (500 yen) instead of the Day pass because it could take most of your day to get to the bottom once.

This year has been great with a lot of snow. Ishiuchi Maruyama usually has a moist, heavy snow and lot of rain, but Jan through mid-Feb was perfect. Powdery snow and great view from the top, where you can see a beautiful white paddy fields. The gondola and lift at the center entrance are very high-tech. The seats on lift is warm and comfy. The restaurants in the ski resort have a variety of prices and tastes, so I recommend you to find a restaurant a little far away from the ski resort because it is inexpensive and has a large amount of food.

This review is purely in regards to the snow play park (Yukiasobi). On the website they made it seem like you could go up the 100m snow escalator and tube or sled down the hill BUT no. I was told the escalator is only for skis and tubing or sledding there was a smaller hill maybe 30m long (see vid). TBF there is a smaller snow escalator for sledding and some mini snow mobile sleds around the same length but it's underwhelming compared to what they seem to be showing on their website.

Pleasant ski station for family, for snow board beginners who get lessons (4000¥) from 13h30 to 15h30 and then try the 2.2km long panoramic course (green level). For advanced skills, only a few black and red levels (it is better purchase a connection/link to Yuzawa Gala for an additional +2800¥). There are 3 or 4 restaurant closed to the entrance, and 1 restaurant on top of the ropeway (650¥ ~ 1400¥) with a panoramic view !
Dogs were not allowed in winter season, but maybe in summer season.

Beautiful Snow sightseeing destination near Tokyo. We visited on 5 January, 2023. We did not ski. We bought the ticket for Ropeway and Snow Park (¥3200per). There are also other ticket options. I have attached a photo of ticket price.
Under the Ropeway and Snow Park ticket, we could spend time on the park playing with snow. The park is just beside the ground ski learning area. There are play equipment freely available at park- slide and sledge car for racing. Though the park seem childish, we had lots of fun.
The ropeway takes one station up to the observatory. Amazing view from there! But it was colder than the ground area and no activity to do. Overall, if you want to enjoy snowfall and good winter getaway even without skiing, this place is highly recommended.

Kagura Ski Resort Tashiro Station is a popular destination for skiing enthusiasts due to its powdery slopes and access to backcountry terrain. It is especially suitable for beginners, boasting two fast lifts and a slow one without being too overcrowded. This is my new favorite spot to set up base! With relative easy access to all three areas: Naeba, Tashiro, & Kagura. Even if this area is closed (it has a shorter season than the other two) You can still bus it to the others. The pistes are awesome Dec-Feb! Once you get down the hill from the ropeway the deeper runs are nice and wide, & long. The lifts are relatively fast, and this place has the best powder of the three imo.
This is for folks that have their ski and board legs under them. I wouldn't recommend it if this is your first time on a board or skis. Naeba is the best if the three for that imo. (It also has seemingly more capability to accommodate the international crowd).
It has been the least crowded of the three each time I've went. The dressing room is tiny but the lobby is huge. Way better than Kagura. The ropeway to the slopes is The public bath was filthy, and I truly mean nasty for Japanese standards. Perhaps it was because I went in so late but there was film and hair in the water. I turned on the hot water to let it all flow over the side. A simple constant flow would alleviate it from getting so many bad reviews. I stepped on the hill. No park area that I found but you have Kagura area for that.
I went on Christmas Day Saturday and it wasn't too crowded at all. At times, I felt as if I had the hill to myself. My best experience in the greater Yuzawa area to date! I will definitely set up base here next time up.
BE EXTREMELY AWARE OF THE BUS SCHEDULES! I can’t stress this enough! It’s around 40 min to Echigo-Yuzawa Station. The last buses to or from run around 5pm. It’s around ¥10000 cab ride so plan accordingly! Firs bus runs around 5am with the next one around 8.

Tashiro is one of three areas at Kagura. Mostly wide open easy slopes. It takes a little time getting across to the Kagura and Mitsumata areas because you keep going more across the mountain rather than up (you'd need to be at least taking 5 lifts).
Due to its higher altitude, Kagura has one of the longest season in Japan (Nov-May) and there was still plenty of snow late (photos taken 30 Mar) and not too slushy, whereas at Naeba next door there wasn't much white stuff left.
There are two restaurants both not huge (they're packed during lunch hours), with other options over at Kagura or Mitsumata area. Strangely the restaurants offer no view of the lake despite both of them being right next to it! Instead go up lift Y for a spectacular view of the lake.

Nice little wood for a stroll. All the beech trees were planted after the war so are approximately the same size and well-spaced. This has led to this place getting its name. There is a pond with a bridge over it where photographers try to get photos of the trees reflected in the water. The different views of the forest during the four seasons are also interesting. The snowshoe walk in winter, run by some of the locals is supposed to be especially pretty. At that time the buildings in the car park are only visible by the roofs sticking up through the snow.

Most of the lovers in Joetsu and Kashiwazaki have probably been to this cape. I took my dog there for the first time in about 20 years, and there was a nice seasonal breeze. There were just families and group travelers.
The bell of the cape is the main attraction, but there is also a walking road, so it is very pleasant to walk for a while. The trees are rustling in the sea breeze from spring to summer.
However, a walk on a rough sea day is just training. It's important to be able to laugh with each other because the atmosphere might get worse in the car on the way home.

The Hoshitoge Rice Terraces is a lush destination featuring picturesque rice fields with tiered, rolling terraces that are highly photographed. The area is renowned for its natural beauty and showcases human fortitude and endeavor. Despite the weather conditions, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the verdant landscape all year round. During spring, the terraces are filled with water which reflects the rising sun creating an awe-inspiring sight.

Beautiful terraced rice fields
This place is famous for its beautiful terraced rice fields.
From web site
Terraced fields are a form of rice field mainly used in mountainous areas. They are built to allow farming on steep slopes and to control water flow. It is also a popular tourist destination due to its scenic and cultural value. They are also important for preserving regional specialties and traditional agricultural methods.

Okushiga Kogen Ski Resort is a family-friendly destination that offers breathtaking mountain views and exciting winter activities like skiing and snowboarding. In addition, the resort provides an opportunity for nature enthusiasts to explore the scenic forest through snowshoeing. To enhance the winter experience, guests can rent snowshoes at 1000 yen and walk on a road covered in snow.

Excellent undiscovered and uncrowded resort with a variety of runs good for families with small kids. One huge complaint: most ski hills have the ashtray smoking pit right beside the entrance, these guys went one step further and connected the furnace intake to the smoking room so it pumps all the second hand smoke in to the restaurant and ski shop. Effin brilliant.

So this is more a review of the mountain area itself. Overall awesome area to go to when visiting Shiga Kogen for boarding/skiing. It's definitely worth the short walk from Gondola 1. Highly recommend taking glade runs as the powder in the trees was awesome. I also took a lesson from the international ski school at the resort and really got a lot from it.

Seems to be the biggest ski resort in Japan ( if you include all connections). No line up no waiting for lifts. All difficulty available. Very wide trails available perfect for beginners.
Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort is a winter sports destination that offers skiing and snowboarding opportunities, equipment rentals, on-mountain dining options, and a bustling village. This resort is ideal for beginners as it provides an environment that is friendly to new skiers. Hiromi from Snow Crystal Yoga and Wellness can assist in arranging everything needed for your trip, including ski passes and lessons. The resort also boasts some unique experiences like having dogs on the slopes!
It's a really great getaway from Tokyo. This place has so many spots to go and is super close to all the things you need. The ticket and rental is not too bad either. Unfortunately, we came in late March so the snow is kinda melting already

Great ski resort, easily accessible from Tokyo (shinkansen and then express bus). The slopes are great and the town itself is very quaint with tons of onsens and great restaurants. No problem if you speak no Japanese either. Only real complaint is that some of the connectivity between lifts is a bit weird. There are a number of "connector" lifts to help get you over little ridges so sometimes instead of just skiing down to the lift you want, you have to skate for a bit and take another short lift. Also, wouldn't necessarily recommend this place for total beginners since there's not a lot of ways for beginners get off the top of the mountain. (There *are* ways though so it's not a deal breaker). Terrain park options are also a bit slim. Overall though, I'd still highly recommend this resort.
Michael Mauer — Google review
A great resort with plenty of runs and good off piste parts. Great POW when it snows , highly recommend for a traditional town who plenty of local Japanese attributes, cheap lift pass as well.
Only a handful of restaurants actually on the mountain, but more on the bottom , with fair prices for food and drink.

20 April 2023: Had a great skiing day! To give some info: I was afraid that the snow would be totally gone, however as of 20 April the higher slopes are still available. These are 2 lifts and around 5 slopes which 4 are of medium difficulty and 1 a bit harder. Good fun for 3 hours. Price info: full day skiing around 4.800 yen, 4 hours pass: 4.200 yen, ski rental just infront of the lift has ski gear and shoes for 2.800 yen for half a day. Next time I come back before April so all the slopes are open:) I came for a day from Tokyo by train and bus. Cheers!

The Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort is one of the largest snow resorts in Japan. It has the longest ski slope 11km in Japan.
I often visit by car and park at the Park 1, which is next to the longest gondola lift, for 1,000 yen for the weekend. It seems the Park 2 and 3 are always free, these parks are a bit far away but one or more free buses are available from the parks to the gondola.
The area is very large and the slopes are wide and so long, so you can ski with your children without any worries. However, there is a lot of walking and climbing around lift stations and at the connections between the slopes and or areas. When I visit with my children, I wonder whether we are skiing or walking.
Please note if visiting with a pre-school child. The child is not issued a ticket as they are free to ride the lift, so the child has to go through the gate with a parent or a companion, but once holding up the ticket, the time between the gate opening and closing again is very short. Therefore, I met several times that only the child went through the gate and I could not. There were no staff around the gate and it was very difficult. Improvements requested.
The snow resort is really huge and one day is not enough to enjoy. Nozawa village also has great hot springs, I want to revisit here for a longer stay to enjoy the whole resort.

Small village/town with a lot of tourists who come for the ski resort. There's a lot of local restaurants a short walk from the ski resort and the snow was really powdery and soft during January. Although there has been a lack of snow which didn't seem like an issue to me since the snow in Australia set a very low standard

The Snow Monkey Park, also known as Jigokudani Yaen Koen, is a secluded park where visitors can get an up-close view of snow monkeys. However, a recent report describes the experience as disappointing. Despite this, there are still recommendations for making the most out of your visit if you decide to go anyway. Alternatively, Kenruko-en Garden in Kanazawa offers a peaceful and visually stunning alternative destination while visiting Japan.
Free parking is available for the monkey park. It’s about a 30 minute flat walk to the entryway that is not paved. I would recommend shoes for hiking. Although it was a Saturday when we visited, we arrived at 8:30 and entered at 9:00 when the park opened. We had the place to ourselves for about 45 minutes undisturbed. At the time, only two monkeys were inside the onsen however many monkeys were around or near the water. The monkeys themselves are not aggressive and left you alone without incident. I rather enjoyed watching the babies play and the mothers cling to the babies for protection. Overall, I am happy to see the snow monkeys relatively crowd free.
Annie Sobol — Google review
The hike up to the monkeys was very beautiful! And the snow monkeys are definitely worth the visit! The pool they are in is much smaller than expected but nonetheless enjoyed the experience. Just a tip, the path in winter is slippery at the beginning, so I would recommend bringing shoes with good grip and spikes. We had flat shoes and after we made it up the first steps, we were fine the rest of the way. But would've definitely felt safer with some more snow-suited boots!

Visited this place during winter in January. My visit was a captivating blend of natural beauty and adorable wildlife. The chilly weather was undeniable but the sight of the snow covered landscape and endearing snow monkeys enjoying a hot bath in their natural habitate more than made up for it.
The journey to the park itself was an adventure, through picturesque trails that added an element of excitement to the experience. Upon arriving at the park's ♨️ springs, the sight of the 🐒🐵 soaking in warm waters was an absolute delight.

Great park, easy hike to see a bunch of snow monkeys.
There are many baby monkeys as well. They are so cute and naughty.
A tip, if you take bus to get there with luggage, you can store them at the museum cafe next to the bus stop.

Amazing experience being up close with the Snow Monkeys (which are actually Japanese Macaques). They are indifferent to human presence so you will have no trouble going up to them to take pictures, though the guideline is to stay at least 1 meter away to respect their space. It's a little surreal, almost like humans are invisible. There's a 20 to 30 minutes trek up to the park on foot, so traveling light is best if visiting. If you're staying at the hotels nearby, ask the reception about the park and they might give you discount coupons which makes the park admission tickets cheaper.
Wong Yi — Google review
To reach the Snow Monkey Park, you'll need to walk around 1.6km. In winter, ensure you wear waterproof hiking or trekking shoes. While the park isn't large, the scenery is breathtaking, and you can watch the snow monkeys enjoying a hot spring. Remember not to bring food inside, follow the rules, and avoid disturbing the wild monkeys. There are no restaurants within or near the park; they're only available near the parking lot, so please plan accordingly.
Ghifaroza R. — Google review
Compared to other attractions in Japan it wasn’t that crowded maybe because the snow monkey is a little bit of a walk. Which I appreciate a lot. Not overly packed. The staff could have been a bit nicer. But overall I highly recommend!
Very natural surroundings it felt real when exploring the area. I could do it again. Monkey can be aggressive.
So it is better exercising caution around them.
Tahnee Stockhem — Google review
A bit far from everything else. The walk to the monkey park is about 20 minutes and along a beautiful path surrounded by trees. Admission tickets are 800 yen for adults. Although the monkeys roam freely, there are a few areas that are marked off. You can enjoy seeing them without getting too close as they can be quite aggressive.
Alexis Busso — Google review
Amazing place in the winter! The park with the monkeys are not big, but so worth it. Monkeys are very cute, not aggressive and totally ignores people and just goes about their business as always. You park the car, go for a 2 km hike through amazing nature, and you end up with the most fantastic group of monkeys take the full spa treatment.. And it's wild monkeys, no fence, no feeding them, the can go as they please.. It costs 800 yen per adult and is worth all and then some..

It's a must on your bucket list if you love monkeys. I caught the Limited express Snow Monkey from Nagano Station and got on the local bus which drops you off. Walk about 10min, past the cafe (where you will have the best apple ice cream in the world) up past a gift shop. The stairs next to it will take you to the Park roughly about 30min walk. Traversing the autumn landscape of Snow Monkey Park, where the absence of snow didn't diminish the enchantment. Although it was raining and the muddy paths posed a challenge, the availability of boot rentals came to the rescue, ensuring our comfort during the journey. The cold air, the quiet forest, and the decision to offer boots showcased the park's commitment to visitor satisfaction. As we approached the hot springs, the rain added a mystical quality to the setting, making the playful antics of the snow monkeys even more captivating. Despite the weather's unpredictability, the thoughtful details, like boot rentals, made the visit to Snow Monkey Park a truly enjoyable adventure.

I have heard about this like most people so decided to take a tour to see the Snow Monkeys. It’s about 3 1/2 hours from Tokyo Shinjuku. Once we got there there is a little bit of a walk to get to the monkeys. ( 1 mile each way from the entrance) It’s about a 20 minute walk but be careful as there was a lot of ice and snow. When you see the geyser ( which is pretty interesting in itself) you are almost there. A few more steps up. There wasn’t a lot of snow but lots of monkeys. A few were in the water but it was really nice to finally be able to see them. You have to go at least once.
M H — Google review
Definitely worth a visit amidst the touristy feel. It’s been warm the last few days, hence not icy and more like muddy. But safer to walk, did not need spikes. We were lucky to have a few of them, especially the grandfather (last photo) in the on a warm day. On the way down don’t forget to stop by at Enza Cafe for their homemade apple pie…. Simply awesome…
Danny Leong — Google review
This is a really well run and maintained park. The monkeys are amazingly docile because of the complete lack of interaction with humans over the years.
In winter, they bathe a lot in the pool constructed for them which is very cute. You can get very close so there's lots of opportunities for great pictures.
It's a long cold walk, but the path up the mountain is well maintained. It's well worth it! You don't often get the opportunity to see nature this up close and personal. They close at 4PM so don't start your walk too late!

A bucket list destination if you have the opportunity while visiting Japan. You can easily get lost in nature and most of the visuals make you feel like you working for national geographic. The walk to the park from the bus stop was about 40 minutes. We went in early January and the weather was beautiful. It costs ¥800 for adults to enter but it was worth every yenny. I highly recommend visiting this park as it's a once in a lifetime experience.

We visited despite the weather being really rainy and we are so glad we did!
The way up, despite the poor weather, was no problem since it was very well maintained. The path up is easy to traverse. We were also pleased with the little shop and the facilities.
You can get really close to the animals and if you follow the guidelines, you are absolutely safe. Experiencing the monkeys up close really is something special.
The animals are not caged and can leave if they want to.
Overall I can more than recommend the experience.

Wow!!!! Definitely worth a visit, even coming to the area just for this experience. There are so many monkeys once you reach the onsen, they bathe there, have little fights, play - it was lovely to watch them. We were lucky enough to see a lot of baby monkeys as well (march-may I think is a good time to go). The weather wasn't perfect but there were still a lot of monkeys for all the visitors to see. 800 yen is also a fair price. The 'hike' there is very easy, also with kids or even a wheelchair. There are restrooms next to the park.
San R. — Google review
It was nice to visit. Make sure you have good boots for a muddy trail. More interesting in the colder months definitely because the monkeys won’t bath when it’s warm. The walk to the park is really nice and has only a couple of steep parts, so it’s really easy. Watching the monkeys go about their business is really adorable. The entrance fee was 800 JPY in 2023, which I found a bit high for what you get. If I visited again, I would come in the winter/early spring.

I really really really loved it here! It was way more fun then expected. I ended up staying 5 hours in total here. The monkeys mind their own business and they pretty much act like you aren't there.
There were a lot of babies as well. Which I found super cute. A couple of them also ended up bathing amd playing in the hot springs which was really fun to see.
Luckily it wasn't that busy when I visited. But next time i would love to come during the winter!

5 stars for the very cute monkeys. 2 stars for getting there. Bus drops at main road so need to walk in. Very convenient taxi service from Yudanaka Station cost <2000 yen. But need to book a return ride. Then walk 1.5km along a nature trail, when wet is muddy. Don't wear anything new. Still worth visiting.

Snow Monkeys Park offers a unique, albeit slightly crowded, experience. The park, though small in size, is a treasure trove for nature lovers. The pathway to the park is scenic, leading to the extraordinary sight of snow monkeys in their natural hot spring habitat. Despite the limited space occasionally feeling crowded, the opportunity to observe these photogenic monkeys up close is unparalleled. The staff's dedication is commendable, and the facilities are well-maintained. Overall, it's a must-visit for an unforgettable glimpse into the serene world of these charming creatures. A truly remarkable, photogenic encounter!

Must visit place if you are coming to Japan in January or February. From the bus stop to the the snow monkey park the road was narrow and covered with snow. It was slippery. Finally when you will reach to the snow monkey park you will be happy to see those cute well mannered monkeys. They are really special. They soak their bodies in the hot spring water and they are camera friendly. They will look at your camera in a nice way.

Its a long long walk on a slippery path. Took us almost and hour one way to walk 1.8 kilometers.
The pool with the monkeys is great once you get there. Probably spent half an hour and then had to do the 1 hour walk back.
Maybe it's better without snow. But then again: your coming to see the snow monkeys.

You MUST do this!!! This was a once in a lifetime experience. It is a large hike up a steep street. Then you go up some steps. At the top it flattens out. You the have a long but fairly flat and very muddy walk along a trail. At the end of the trail there is a flight of extremely steep steps. At the top it flattens out again and you walk up a concreted slope to a hut. On the other side of the hut is the monkey park! It is amazing!!! You need good knees to do this and you must be sturdy on your feet. It is ok to go slow! Well worth the effort for the incredible experience!!!

Walking up the snowy track was breathtaking. Amazing view and many beautiful scenery for photo shooting. It's 1.8km one way and takes about 45 minutes. However, give it extra for taking photos.
Once you've reached the top, the village is spectacular, and every step you've climbed is worth it.
The monkeys are friendly. However, do not carry food or drink as the smell or aroma may attract them. There'll be T&C at the ticket counter for patrons to take cautions when visiting.
I would recommend this place to visit, especially when you've not seen monkeys in hot spas before. And definitely the view and scenery.

Please do not visit this place. If you truly care about animals, avoid visiting the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. It is a tourist trap that is really affecting their habitat. They cannot be called wild if staff members feed them, making them fight for food just to keep them around to please tourists who want a good photo, they cannot be called wild if we cared about a good photo + tourism more than conservation, and they cannot be called wild by having hundred of cameras in front of them every second for 7 hours day by day… that’s is so sad and I truly regret my visit, it was not was I was expecting. I hope people start thinking it twice and making a good research about this place before visiting, I thought I did but in fact, I was wrong.

This is a very popular tourist attraction year round. We got there by bus just like most of the other people. It's roughly a 40 minute walk from the bus stop to the snow monkeys park. Part of the trail can be muddy and slippery due to rain or snow, so wear appropriate footwear as suggested by the other reviewers. Luckily the trail is mostly flat, we made it there without much difficulty even in the snow.
It's definitely worth the walk. We saw plenty of monkeys inside the park. Most of them were soaking or just hanging around the hot spring. The others were cuddling or running around the riversides. It got a little bit crowded around the hot spring, but there was enough room for everyone to get a good view and shots of the monkeys.

We loved this place. We went there during the winter in January and were afraid that there would be too many tourists but it was alright. You have a small hike from the parking of 20-25min and just this is already really nice to do. Beautiful views in a snowy forest. There were so many monkeys it was impressive. It’s really magical with those hot onsen and all the monkeys walking around. Be careful and don’t touch them though ! Vibes are immaculate

The sailing was at 7am, but the building only opened at 6am. It seems that vehicles will board the ship each time, but passengers will only be able to board the ship after 45 minutes.
If you are bringing a vehicle, please fill out the application form and bring it to the reception desk. If you are only a customer, there is an automatic ticket office located a little away from the counter, which is convenient.
When the time comes, an announcement will be made that you can board the ship, so head to the ticket gate.
The gate will open when you scan the QR code written on your boarding ticket into the reader attached to the ticket gate.
If there is anything you do not understand, please ask a staff member.
I hope you will receive friendly customer service.
Compared to Niigata Port, there were fewer employees, and it felt lonely, probably because there were fewer passengers.
Additionally, the ships cruising the route between Naoetsu and Ogi seem to be smaller than those between Niigata and Ryotsu, and they are more likely to be canceled if the weather gets bad.
In fact, our return boat was canceled due to high waves, so we had to stay another night in Sado ^^;
It seems that it will be closed in mid-November, so please check in advance before using it.

現に、帰りの船が波が高い為に欠航となり、佐渡でもう一泊することになりました^^;
11月中旬には休業するらしいので、利用の際は事前のチェックが必要です。

The vessel is the 2,483-ton Koganemaru, which is one size smaller than the huge car ferries that run on the Niigata-Otaru route, and as a result is susceptible to waves and winds. I've seen many people get seasick even when the waves are about 1m high, so if you're prone to motion sickness, you'll need to take motion sickness medication. Also, this ferry does not have a cafeteria shop, so you must bring your own food and drinks (there are vending machines for bread and sweets, juice and cup noodles).
The port is small and has a restaurant, waiting room, and ticket office. The vehicle waiting area is also easily visible in the space on the east side of the facility. There are souvenir shops and other shops, but they are not open when the first train leaves (7am). The dining room is open, so you can eat some food before boarding the ship.

Inside the ship, the sofas and curtains remain closed.
There are vending machines for drinks, cup noodles, sweet breads, and snacks on the ship, but in the case of Ogi Port → Naoetsu Port, the cup noodles were sold out from the time we boarded the ship because they were not replenished.
Also, drinks tend to sell out relatively quickly, so it might be a good idea to bring your own food and drinks.

Takada Castle is a feudal-era castle located in Japan and features three turrets, surrounded by a moat and park, making it an ideal spot for cherry blossom viewing. This 19th century castle from the Meiji period has two observation decks on the first and second floors that offer stunning views of the surroundings. The entry fee to visit the castle is 300 yen per person while fish feeding can also be enjoyed there.
What a cute little castle! According to the brochure, this castle lacks some features common to other castles because it was constructed in a rush due to an impending attack. It's fascinating to see what they pulled off in only a limited time.

Madarao Mountain Resort is a vast ski area that boasts of exceptional powder and freestyle runs, in addition to a snow park. It also offers summer hikes and zip-lining activities. The ski resort features impressive terrain for good powder days, including steep tree runs that are visually appealing. January visits are relatively quiet with minimal waiting time for the lifts. Visitors have options to purchase Madarao-only passes or include Tangram lifts at an extra cost.
A great place to try Snowboarding as a beginner.
Himanshu Bisht — Google review
Compared to the size of the area the off-piste is very good, and the attitude to off-piste some of the best in Japan. Most of the lifts are old, but rather than changing them out the should develop the system further, adding more north facing slopes and areas to the total. For off-piste this is one of the best places in Japan.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Madarao Kogen Ski Resort in Nagano Prefecture last winter, and it turned out to be an absolutely fantastic winter escape. This hidden gem of a resort exceeded my expectations in terms of both skiing opportunities and overall experience.
First and foremost, the ski slopes at Madarao Kogen were an absolute delight. With a variety of trails catering to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced skiers, there was something for everyone. The resort's well-maintained slopes provided exhilarating descents and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding snow-covered mountains. The snow quality was excellent throughout my stay, ensuring optimal conditions for skiing and snowboarding.
The resort's amenities were equally impressive. The ski equipment rental services were efficient, and the staff was helpful and knowledgeable, making it easy for newcomers to get properly equipped and ready for the slopes. The ski instructors were patient and experienced, offering valuable guidance and lessons for those who wished to improve their skiing skills.
In terms of accommodation, the lodges and hotels within the resort were comfortable and conveniently located. I had the pleasure of staying at one of the slopeside lodges, which provided easy access to the ski lifts and stunning views of the slopes. The rooms were cozy, well-maintained, and equipped with modern amenities, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
The dining options at Madarao Kogen were diverse and satisfying. From cozy mountain cafes to traditional Japanese restaurants, there was a wide range of culinary choices available. I particularly enjoyed the local specialties, such as hearty ramen and delicious tempura, which provided the perfect fuel after a day of skiing.
One aspect that truly stood out during my visit was the friendly and welcoming atmosphere created by the staff and fellow visitors. The sense of community at Madarao Kogen was palpable, with skiers and snowboarders sharing stories and tips, creating a vibrant and inclusive environment.
In conclusion, this resort is a hidden gem that offers unforgettable winter adventures. With its well-groomed slopes, excellent snow quality, comfortable accommodations, and warm hospitality, it is a destination that I highly recommend to anyone seeking a memorable winter getaway.
Sushi and Beyond — Google review
Amazing terrain for good powder days, steep tree runs look awesome. We were there in January and it wasn't very busy, hardly ever waited to get on a lift. Definitely worth a visit. You can buy a pass just for Madarao, or for a little extra include the lifts at Tangram too.
Chris Delaney — Google review
The Madarao Mountain Resort is a quite big snow resort. It takes about 1 hour to get there from the downtown of Nagano city.
There are various kind of slopes, flat and perfectly groomed slopes, steep and ungroomed ones, ski/snowboard park, and controlled natural forest areas for tree run. The resort offers a lot of fun for advanced skiers and borders, however to be honest it may not be the perfect place to bring beginners and kids. There is only a few slopes flat, wide and gentle for beginners.
If you visit by car, car parks No.8 or No.7 are recommended. A deposit of JPY500 is required for a lift ticket, and the deposit can be refunded from the ticket office, if you park at the No.8.
If you park at the No.7, you need to take the lift No.1 to get back to the car park No.7, you should NOT refund at the ticket office. The deposit can be refunded at the coffee shop in the No. 7.

Came out here for a day trip, from Nozawa Onsen, and had so much fun on the slopes! Base altitude is higher at Madarao compared to Nozawa, so it was snowing by the time we arrived (whereas lower down it would be raining, which we wanted to avoid).
Took the 8:20am bus departing from Nozawa Onsen bus terminal for Madarao, it's about a 1 hour ride, including a stop at Iiyama station. Cost is ¥1200 per person. Arrived at Madarao at around 9:30am. We rented our gear at the Madarao Kogen Hotel - for skis, boots, poles, and helmets - for ¥5400 per head. One day ski pass for Madarao only is ¥5000. If you want Madarao and Tangram (the resort next to Madarao), you will have to pay a little more. But Madarao has plenty of slopes for beginners and intermediates. Because the visibility of was a bit poor, we took it a bit slow and stayed on the greens, like Crystal and Skyview. Our friends who had more experience went further up and also tried the Bear trail which they said was a lot of fun! Fun for everyone!
Had lunch at West Valley, the restaurant on the right of Banff. Their katsu curry and gyoza were delicious. We picked West Valley because it was a little cheaper than Banff, had more of a traditional Japanese feel to it, slightly cheaper, and had gyoza.
Powder was AMAZING! And because Madarao isn't too popular, since there isn't much to do at night in the neighborhood, the slopes weren't too crowded, the snow was fluffy and soft. Last ski lift up back to the hotel is at 4:50pm; rental place closes at 5pm, and you have enough time to catch the 5:20pm bus back to Nozawa Onsen. Bam! A full day of skiing. I only wish the skies were clearer and blue, it would have been more perfect.

A small ski field with lots of different terrain options for beginners to advanced skiers and snowboarders. It's not so well known as Nozawa Onsen and Niseko. But that's what attracts people to come here.

Rebuilt in the concept of “landscape museum” and located right next to Zenkoji temple, the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum also houses the gallery of Higashiyama Kai, the much loved landscape painter of Japan. The architecture, the garden, the collection, the vibes…everything was stunning. We went on a rainy spring day and the view of rain drenched verdant leaves and the fog-enshrouded mountains was mystical. A great place to rejuvenate oneself! The roof terrace has the best views.
Also, the restrooms are very clean and the staff are polite and kind, so it's very relaxing. ✨

The Zenkō-ji Temple, established in the 7th century, boasts a beautiful garden and treasure house. Its most cherished possession is the Ikko-Sanzon statue, considered Japan's first Buddhist image. Despite being unseen by even 37 generations of emperors, Zenkō-ji welcomes an influx of visitors every seven years during Gokaicho Matsuri to view a copy.
A beautiful 7th century temple and surrounding grounds with a long shopping street leading to it from the city centre. You can find lots of delicious treats on the way up the hill and some good gifts to take back home.
This temple is said to hold the first Buddhist statue to ever come to Japan and it is considered to be the birthplace of Buddhism in the country. Nagano Town was built around the temple and it continues to be a major point of interest in the modern city.
I love the two giant Nio Guardians at the outer gate south of the main gate. It is the first structure you pass as you walk up the hill from the city

The temple where Kuukai the monk got raised. Very I interesting experience walking in the dark by touching the wall! The only tricky part is that you have to pay at every place you go… would be nice if there was one ticket for all. and it’s not too cheap if it adds up. Very cool temple in Nagano with a large complex of important buildings with interesting history! The temple itself is a very iconic building that has been the favorite temple I’ve visited so far in Japan. I’d recommend buying the combination pass (1200 yen) which allows you to enter to enter all the ticketed areas of the Temple grounds. Each is quite unique and worth a look. The Main Hall includes an underground passage which is quite dark and a fun experience to walk through! The Main Gate provides great views of the temple itself and the surrounding scenery. The museum offers many pieces of art related to the museum and the deities relevant to the temple. It also has a cool section with artifacts from when the 14th Dalai Lama visited Zenkoji. The last ticketed building has a large revolving storage for scripture that if you push it one full revolution will give you the same status as if you had recited all the scripture itself! Visiting Zenkoji is a must-do activity when visiting Nagano and the transportation is very easy from the city center! Also, the temple is surrounded by great small shops with souvenirs and some excellent food!

This is a beautiful and culturally important Buddhist temple. On the day we visited, there were hundreds of people. Many tourists were enjoying the beauty of the buildings, gardens, and statues. The locals were going about their rituals of prayer or celebration. Family groups celebrate their children's coming of age, dressed in their traditional kimonos. Worshippers receiving blessings from the priest or praying for good health. A great experience.

Main highlight to visit in Nagano. This gigantic buddhism temple has a long history over 1400 years.
Before getting to the main temple, there is a shopping street where you can enjoy buying souvenirs or snack or food.
The main temple offers an interesting activity that is, walking into a pitch black tunnel. You wont see a thing. What you do is to put your right hand on the walk and use it to guide your direction. There are a few turns there. As long as you hav your right hand on the wall it will be fine. It is believed that once you walk you are purified and then can go to get blessings with several places in the temple. There is also 'a key' in the tunnel ( I feel like a door handle) it is believed that if toy find the key in the tunnel, yoy will be blessed. It is about a waist level on the right and I reckon its about 2/3 of the journey.
There are some other activities also like meditation (called zazen) and calligraphy.

30 min walk from Nagano station thru the main street to get there, with interesting shops/buildings along the way. Nice temple grounds.

It's the better asakusa in every way. Way bigger temple, nicer area, beautiful garden. More food stalls, better quality food and souvenirs, cheaper too. It's never crowded, almost no foreign tourists. It's one of the best places I've been to.

Personally had a decent time walking around all aspects of the temple and admiring its beauty and significance.
Just sadly found the place a bit too over commercialised with the main hall of the temple with the Buddha for prayer costing people 700 Yen to pray. A bit too far from my perspective.

Stunningly beautiful location in the lovely city of Nagano. Would advise going early in the day as it gets a little busier later on. Well worth a trip into the main temple itself for a look around (no pictures, so take it all in!) and a talk to the staff there who are welcoming & explained to us (in very good English) the meaning of the temple & various adornments within.
The rest of the grounds are picturesque with a mountainous backdrop against various temple buildings. We also left a Gankake-Kitsune as an offering at a small shrine & made a wish.
Take your time to soak it all in & enjoy the serenity of this amazing place :)

One of the most beautiful temples to visit while in Japan. The complex is surrounded by multiple structures, sculptures and gardens.
The entrance to the complex is free except for the main temple.
There are many stores at the side of the road leading to Zenko-ji temple.

Beautiful temple! Highly recommend visiting this place if you’re fortunate enough to visit Nagano. We visited on the 1.1.2024. Lots of lovely colourful shops with lots of souvenirs to purchase. The only thing I don’t recommend was the earthquake that we experienced! Very scary but all part and parcel of a fantastic experience at Zenkoji Temple.

Great experience. At 7 am is the ceremony and it worth it to be there so early in the morning. The surroundings are beautiful and you can find statues of Buddha. You can also make your Goshuin for 500 yen.

It is an amazing place to feel the spirit and history of ancient times. The temple and the surrounding buildings are of a grandeur scale. There is a sense of serenity. We walked up from Nagoya Station in what was a very flat sand easy walk. Lots of souvenir shops, coffee shops, and restaurants on the way up to the temple. We got there around 3:30 in the afternoon, and there were very few signs of crowds. There was lots of information about Zenko-ji on display for those curious. Lots and lots of photo opportunities. Definitely put it on your must do list if in or near Nagano.
Was lucky enough to head back there a few days later but went at about 6 pm. Totally different vibe at night and lovely picture opportunities. Very few people, just a few locals walking through the grounds. Zenkoji is well lit up, as are the gates. If you have tome, a night walk up there is recommended.

This is a must if you are visiting Nagano, especially for the first time. The area can be quite crowded especially in the afternoon. For people who prefer walking, you can also walk from Nagano station to Zenkoji temple. There are also busses you can take from Nagano station to Zenkoji temple. The place is really nice and quiet!

Great temple complex in Nagano.
Especially nice to walk up to this temple from the Station as there's a big shoppong street leading towards the temple.

We loved this place. It payed by itself the travel to Japan. Nagano is a beautiful town, completely different to Tokyo. Architecture is amazing and whole vibe.
Zeko-ji it's a complete town itself, surrounded by several other minor temples, gardens and amazing landscapes.
There're options to stay in small temples and houses around the temple and live the spiritual lifestyle, that has to be an unforgettable experience.
Woodwork, wood sculptures are like nothing you've seen before. The giant warriors keeping the gigantic gates seems like they're alive.
A must visit in Japan, don't miss this place and please reserve at least half day in the area.
If you're ok with walking, it is just 30 mins from Nagano Station in a straight direction to the temple. The avenue is packed with nice design stores and astonishing design houses.

Exploring the temple grounds revealed beautifully manicured gardens, serene ponds, and various smaller shrines, each with its unique charm. In the heart of Nagano City, Zenkoji Temple stands as a testament to the enduring power of spirituality and the beauty of cultural heritage.

Went for the night boat trip, which was cancelled for weather. The sky was overcast, but no rain and very mild wind. Seems to only set out for near perfect weather.
If you're coming for the night boat trip, I can't recommend it. Only try if you happen to be in the area.
Staff were very nice.

I dont think they particularly like tourists. The tour would be interesting for sure, if they would provide it in English. The only english words I got where: No pictures! I mean: nowadays, why? Thats free advertising... anyways, the kids had some fun with the lightning squids, gathering stamps and trying some fancy VR stuff

It was very interesting to see these firefly squid and be able to touch them. Unfortunately it was a little sad to eat them afterwards, so I choose not to.

An interesting museum about firefly squid. It's recommended to come in March or April to see the bioluminescence in person at the museum.

We went there on June 7th but live show of hotaru ika is not available any more because it is out of season. It normally runs the hotaru ika shows from late March to early Late May. But we were able to see the the light emitting plankton show which was quite nice. If you sre in town, drop by.

The best season is from April until early May. You cannot see squids lighting show in the other season. 1 or 2 hour is enough to see.

My kids love the museum and we visit more than 10 times a year. Naturally it is a good thing to see firefly squid during the season.
As a repeat visitor, I recommend the poem by Takashi Takashima, which can be seen immediately after entering the museum. It is a poem of nostalgia for the past, and shows the wonderful sensitivity of Takashi Takashima, a local poet and doctor. This poem is expressed in a wonderful calligraphy by Masa-aki Oh-hira, a calligrapher also from Toyama Prefecture.
Unfortunately, there is no English translation, so here is my own translation.
The nostalgia for the past can be likened to that of a firefly squid sinking to the bottom of the Sea of Darkness. A small town in the Etchu region called Namekawa.

Booked the midnight boat trip in mid April, but it was cancelled at the last minute due to wind. Many Japanese people turned up too and were disappointed. We had a free museum visit with the Firefly Squid light show and explanations on how they catch the squid, but everything was said in Japanese. We got to touch the squid, and also got to see the caught squid at the harbor after the fishermen came back in the rain. Overall, it was rather interesting and informative despite the cancelled boat ride.
The staff were friendly and helpful. One young man who seemed like a team leader helped us to call a taxi back to our hotel at 5am, and stayed back to wait with us and send us off.

I think this is one of those things you should see on the boats if you want to.
We drove hours to get here, and on arrival there was a sign saying something like they had failed to catch new squids which they do every day on season. This meant all the squids were a few days out of their natural habitat and generally seemed quite tired / ill.
The show which is a highlight basically involved them turning the lights off and lifting a few out of the water on a net. I was aware it would disturb them, but this doesn't seem worth their time.
It might be better later in the seasons.
