Izakaya Kaz
Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Izakaya Kaz is a Japanese restaurant located near The Pub, marked by a set of red lanterns. Despite initial difficulties in securing a table, the friendly staff eventually accommodated the guests. Although there were some language barriers and apparent understaffing, the service remained attentive. The sukiyaki set for two, along with drinks and dessert, amounted to 10,200 for two people.
We didn’t go for the hot pot instead we had a mix of dishes. The four of us shared plenty dishes and tried different japonese drinks. We loved it. After 10 days in Japan and always looked at trying different food and we found this place one of the best we have been to.
Florian Guillemard — Google review
Great food. Book aheqd though. They fill up quickly.
Nate Wilson (natskis) — Google review
This place shares a building with The Pub but that’s where the similarities end. The food at The Pub was a bit disappointing, while at Isakaya Kaz, it was decidedly better. The prices are higher at Kaz and you will need a reservation, it’s still probably the best of the 2 places. The karaage was fantastic and the sake flight was amazing. They do have a lot of fish so if that’s not your cup of tea then The Pub might be more to your liking.

Super good sushi and tempura. The okonomiyaki was very rich and a little overwhelming

Food was tasty and service was fast. Was a little over priced.

Oh, what a phenomenal evening here. A friend found this lovely place and a group of 6 colleagues from Germany, Sweden and Japan enjoyed the time 100%.
Dirk Hartmann — Google review
The best meal we had in Hakuba. Delicious food and super attentive service.
Anthony Hughes — Google review
Really delicious, especially for a restaurant that caters specifically to hotels! We did the sukiyaki and thought it was incredible.
Naomi Lopes — Google review
Amazing food and amazing service. Definitely book ahead and make a reservation because this place is worth it. The sashimi is locally sourced and so fresh, you can taste good produce when it comes to sashimi and nigiri. Service were so friendly especially for foreigners and their sake options were stellar. Do hope they add more hot sake to the list, but the one they had was amazing! Wish we could book again but it’s very busy for a good reason.
Erin — Google review
Great service and friendly staff but we did not enjoy the food so much. We tried both the Kaz and Mansaku and both used the same shabu beef quality which was horrible. Convenient since we are staying at the hotel. But definitely not a repeat.
Myia Garcia — Google review
When we couldn’t get a table at Mansaku, we were looking for another Japanese restaurant nearby. We saw a set of red lanterns next to “The Pub.”
At first the receptionist said the restaurant was full, however, we could see empty tables. We insisted and she finally agreed to seat us (otherwise, I would give it 5-stars).
The staff has limited English but was very friendly. Although seemed short staffed for a full restaurant, they were attentive.
With a sukiyaki set for 2, with drinks and dessert, we paid ¥10,200 for 2 pax.
The food was excellent, the sukiyaki sauce was not overly sweet or salty.
Warning: the ventilation is not great, so your clothes will smell!

Shirakawa-go is a historical village tucked away in a remote mountainous area that boasts traditional Gassho-style farmhouses. As one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites, it is a must-visit for any tourist. The tranquil and peaceful atmosphere of the village makes it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
It was nice. Seeing the traditional homes in that region up close was spectacular. There are plenty of shops to visit and buy reasonable priced trinkets. We stopped by the restaurant nearest to the entrance parking lot and had lunch. It was lovely.

Beautiful village!!!
It would be best if you can find a place and stay for a night near the village. You can visit it early in the morning next day. No crowded tourist before 8:30am.
There are few restaurant near by but only 1 open after 7:30pm. So be prepare and have your dinner before that.
Trang Bui — Google review
A really scenic and peaceful place. Lots to see and do. There are many tourists that come here, however the place is so big, it's no big deal. As part of our tour, we also had a delicious meal. If you are in the region, definitely add this place to your list.
Daniel Ooi — Google review
Nice, calm, beautiful area. Can have a lot of people walking around, but the vibe is rather pleasant and everyone seems to respect these lovely surroundings. We have a room with a back window looking right out over a wonderful stream. If you do your research and set the right expectations, I think you will love including a visit here within your regional travel plans.
Keith Hunter — Google review
I was amazed at this well presented Heritage town! The houses still accommodate the locals & stay over tourists. That was us!😊
The locals are early morning risers due to the thousands of tourists that converge during the day. I observed the locals dog walking, gardening & general outdoor cleaning in the early morning hours.
If you stay overnight, you really must arise early, you will have the village streets to yourself! We had a fabulous experience!

While this place is the most beautiful in wintertime, covered with snow, it is still very nice place to visit anytime of the year.
I visited Shiragawa-Go during Autumn and didn't disappoint. This place/village is very attractive. You can see why it is UNESCO world heritage site. People preserved old architecture, and village very well so you can feel like you warp to the past.

Great heritage area. Lots to look at and learn about how the locals lived. Went in early April and it was a clear fresh day. Could be done in a t-shirt except for the strong winds when crossing the foot beidge. Highly recommend if you have at least 3+ hours in the area

Came here on late spring.
One of the Unesco World Heritage. A must visit.
A historical village that secluded beyond the mountain. It was a calm, serene, peaceful.
You need to go up to the hill to see and enjoy the whole village area from above. It was too beautiful.
The river and the water ditch sorround is super clear and clean as crystal
Miranti Vidyasari — Google review
This is a traditional japanese village. It takes about 3-4 hours to cover the entire village. We visited here during early autumn. There is a bus to the observatory point. Cost is 200 JPY. But there is also a foot path to climb there. We used the bus to go uphill and used the footpath to come down. River side is very beautiful. Try to visit the museums if you are interested to see the historical things.
Chamal Perera — Google review
Well worth the bus ride (or rental car drive) to see these amazing houses built hundreds of years ago in a picturesque location. Spend at least 2-3 hours here to walk around and view the village, and grab a bite to eat or a souvenir. Visited on May 22, 2023.
Matty Hammo — Google review
You will need to buy a bus ticket in advance if you come with public transport. Also to go back. And keep in mind that everything closes at 4pm so it would be best to eat lunch around 12-1pm.
Shantal — Google review
Nice little tourist area, deserted at night so make sure you get dinner early! We had a lovely quiet time there in the morning before the crowds started to com at around 9am when the museums open
M S — Google review
Amazing place, it transports you to another time period almost. The people there were so welcoming to us, we had something to look at every step of the way around the village. Make sure to respect and follow the rules of the place (no trespassing, no littering, etc.)
Jennifer Vioniwinata — Google review
Absolutely love this place! When going when its less crowded, it is very peaceful and tranquil feeling the cold wind on your skin while looking at the surrounding green mountains and the old fashioned village. Drain water is so clear and clean that there are fishes swimming in the drain! Definitely recommend to go up to the observatory either through hiking or a shuttle to observe and really appreciate the beauty of the landscape aswell as the village in its entirety! Definitely should go!
Myth Boi — Google review
Amazing place, big snow and magical scenario. Christmas time must go place. If you go with car, must need snow chain. All restaurants open and not over crowded. Way better to enjoy then any other season.
Thomas Szabo — Google review
A little town with all the good feels.
The houses are lovely. Everything is walkable. Homes are fascinating too.
Homes have no signal nail and are known for their roof structure that look like praying hands.
I particularly loved the cafe where you see the Shirakawago scenery whilst drinking coffee.
There was also a lunch menu for 2000 Yen with hida beef set super yummy.
Everything is great and amazing in this lovely town.

Love the small village feel and the unique high pitched thatched roofed houses and the river nearby. Has a couple of houses that you can pay (400Y) to go inside and experience the past (Myozinji house built since 1748). Need at least 6 hours here for visit. Kids will love the trouts living in the gutters along the streets.

We made a three hour stop here on our way to Kanazawa by bus. It's a bit of a tourist spot and good for a one hour stop only. It has lots of toilets around the town and two small cafes if you want a coffee. We found one restaurant which was open. A very nice town with a lot of original houses and you can also go up to the observatory. When we went there was a very large number of tourists.
Keith Saunders — Google review
We were lucky to see some snow when we visited this unique village in the north of Gifu.
Very unique house design and there were shops and restaurants around the village.
It's such a famous tourist attraction spot that at the time when I visited, there were more tourists than locals living in this area.
I would definitely recommend coming here when it's snowing a lot more than the pictures here.
Nicholas Tan — Google review
We have visited this place before and I have also reviewed this place previously and so I will keep this one "short and sweet".
This time round, we allocated more time here as previously we only stopped by here for about an hour (after our visit to Takayama Old Town) but didn't have much time to roam the place.
We arrived slightly before 3pm. Weather was cold (but it was much colder later on when the sun set) but the river had not fully frozen like in our previous trip. It was quite comfortable to walk under the sun and yet very cold condition.
More shops were opened as it was weekday (our previous visit was on a Sunday and many shops were closed then). So we could walk around and shop for local foods and souvenirs.
We loved the scenery, lots of greenery and beautiful cottage houses, and our mother nature was just right around us!
Surely it was a wonderful revisiting trip on this UNESCO World Heritage site! Definitely worth it!
Ed Chung — Google review
A very quiet place for tourists to appreciate the old Japanese culture and architecture. The place is close to a number of local restaurants. We drove there on a weekday in March. Need to go through a lot of tunnels to reach there. Better equip with sun glasses because its tiring to drive among mountains with remaining snow. Both parking and restaurants are not too full. Kids can still hv snowball fights and build up snowman though we no longer could see snow on roof any more. Houses are close to each other and we could do some walking while not being too exhausted. Suggest to stay there for 2.5 hours including lunch. Love the place, being something different to visit in Japan.

A magical experience in this winter wonderland! It was snowing on Christmas Day! We had so much fun building a snowman. Many beautiful farm houses are covered in snow for great photos. Lots of souvenirs shops and little restaurants and dessert shops. The road leading up the observatory deck has turned icy, so need to walk slowly and carefully. The view from the observatory deck was breathtaking. It was an incline going up. Need to take breaks along the way. Don't forget to take pictures!
Jen Chan — Google review
Very nice old town of thatched roof houses. All made with wood and ropes, no nails used in the construction.
It was snowing which added to the magic.
We were there relatively early with our car but there were already lots of people around. It's nice and you spend an hour going around and up to the observatory point. Don't take the bus, use the short walkway by the side, much better views of the village.
Seb Camborieux — Google review
gorgeous ghasso town, we got so lucky with the snow (early march) - go to だんご屋 ゆたか on your way to the observation deck and try the sweet sake! so many places to eat in town and lots of cute souvenirs! make sure you buy a bus ticket back to where you’re going in advance (we got stranded for a few hours but we were lucky to get seats on the last bus)
Brit Thew — Google review
Visit in the winter peak so temperature was -5. Beautiful and fairytale-like village, make sure you have your time after 3pm or before 10am as all same day tourists would arrive from 10am and leave by 3pm. Observation deck has beautiful view but extremely crowded most of the time.
Truc Nguyen — Google review
Ranks high in my favorite places visited so far. Went for a day trip (winter season) and instantly fell in love. Regretted not staying longer and will definitely visit again.
I am in awe at how the locals protect this heritage site. The town looks mystical from afar. If you’re into heritage tourism then this is a place you shouldn’t miss.
There are food stalls and souvenir shops available.

Shibata Castle Ruins, a flatland-style castle situated in the heart of the city, is a well-preserved piece of Japanese history that can be visited seasonally. Despite being one of Japan's smaller castles, its informative staff offers free admission and guided tours of the castle grounds. Although it only takes 15-20 minutes to explore this small but quaint attraction, it may not be as impressive as other competing sites in the area.

This is probably a facility where river rafting has existed for a long time, and I think the souvenir shop that was there was registered as a roadside station or something. Just my imagination...
So, although it doesn't have brand new equipment, it has a good taste and I like it very much.
The souvenir shop is especially good, and there are many things that can only be purchased here. ! I think.
For example, a sword 🥷...
It's interesting to watch. I had never heard of river rafting until I came here, but I wanted to try it someday. I didn't do it this time.
It's a very quiet place in the mountains, so it's a great scene at night, so I think it's suitable for sleeping in your car. !

A restaurant where you can buy a ticket at the ticket vending machine → order → pick it up when it's ready. Water is self-serve. I had some soba, but it was light and tasteless. I even wanted to drink the soup. The soba noodles were ice cold. It was great and smooth to the touch. Also, if you go to the back, there seems to be a cutlery shop and a tour boat ticket office, so I would like to use the tour boat next time. There were no local fresh vegetables.

After a long drive
□Souvenirs
The souvenir items seem to be more souvenirs than before. In the past, it seemed like they collected local items such as cracked rice crackers, but they have been weeded out.
□Meals
・A food corner that I have been interested in for a while.
My impression from before was that it was expensive...I felt like it was more expensive at a roadside station than a local one. The story becomes even more obvious when there is a 7-Eleven next door, and it definitely feels cheaper there. Eating at a roadside station is nice, but 450 yen for Frankfurt...
・The unit price of udon and soba is around 500 yen, which is a reasonable price, but the price of ramen is quite high. I understand that it's expensive due to rising prices, but if it's priced at the level of a regular ramen shop, you'll be picky about the taste.
・Dare to eat back fat ramen!
If I say I went to take it off, that might be the case, but on the contrary, I was concerned about how serious I was, so I chose the 820 yen price with high expectations.
For meals, there were no digital items such as the usual food court buzzers, but instead the staff's voice or a retro system of microphones. It is better to use the toilet beforehand. Depending on how crowded it is, it will be completed within 5 minutes.
・Let's eat it!
The conclusion was as expected, it was at the level of eating at a nostalgic food court or a restaurant on the highway, so it was far from the level of a ramen shop, but the taste was considered gentle.
I stopped by for the first time in over ten years.
Carp food comes from a shed to avoid crows.
It was getting messy.
When I was at a hut, I would have to put 100 yen in a bag in a wooden box, so it was a small amount that would fit into a 100 yen gacha-gacha.
I didn't measure the amount so I don't know, but I'm a little disappointed whether it's because they're not collecting the food properly or because they're trying to reduce the amount.

Minato Marche Pier Bandai is an energetic indoor setting that offers a variety of fresh seafood, meat, and locally sourced produce. Although smaller than the Tokyo fish market, there are still numerous excellent options available. Instead of cooked seafood restaurants, there are more sashimi and grilled fish related establishments at this location. In addition to the fish market offerings, adjacent vegetable and meat markets provide additional choices for visitors.
I was in heaven. Good sushi with thick slice of fish, lot other things to taste. All fresh and very affordable. Does not smell like other fish market. Very clean for a fish market. I recommend it. Do not miss this place. Not a very big place. Also good coffee and ice cream.

Definitely must-visit place for visitors, especially you like local marketplace and casual restaurants. It is like in between old marketplace and fancy marketplace. There are fish market, meat market, and grocery store. Very clean and some options for restaurants as well. Closed to Sado ferry terminal.

A collection of stores ranging from a fish market to local produce to butchery to an alcohol section. I got some sashimi from the fish market which was decent, fresh however the selection was lacking. The alcohol store is really well stocked and those who need their boozy fix can definitely hit this place up!

This is a nice weekend adventure. It is a small fish market with lots of variety. You can purchase fresh seafood from the market and cook on sight. Be sure to check availability and reservation of BBQ and seats before hand. BBQ season starts in summer months. I enjoyed original flavored ice cream at Hang Loose. The seasonal flavor was Tomato at the time.

I went there on 8/4 ( Friday ), the day after Nagaoka Matsuri.
The opening time is 1030am and I arrived on 1045am. There was a long queue at that time. After the queue, I took the ticket on 11am and the number was 88. I entered my japan phone number so I could walk outside of the restaurant, I got the phone calling on 1315pm.
I waited until 1345pm to have the seat. I could take the sushi on the conveyor belt or ordered directly to the sushi master.
The quality of food was good, I will recommend 特大赤エビ, エビフライ and pudding ( original favour ) [ XL Red shrimp. Fried shrimp and original puddings ]
Cost ¥8800/ 2 adult ( we both ate so much )
I left on 1430pm.

Pier Bandai fish market 新潟魚市場 in Niigata is not as big as the one in Tokyo but still with many nice choices. But unlike in Tokyo where there are a lot of restaurants where cooked seafood is served, here are more related to sashimi and grilled fish. Next to the fish market, there are vegetable and meat markets and there are more restaurants. Yet, price is definitely a lot cheaper here. After all, Niigata is a small compared to Tokyo :)

Beautiful views of the city and beyond. Be warned that if you go at night the lights are a bit bright so they reflect off the glass into your camera if you take a picture. A stretch located in Niigata where all the wineries are concentrated. It’s a pity that when we visit, the season is already over for grapes and all we see is fruitless vines.

About 15 minutes walk from Yahiko Station.
It was a visit in the rain, but there were many worshipers. There is a mountain behind the main shrine, but when the rain stopped, the fog turned to the sky and it was a mysterious sight.
If you go by train, there aren't many trains, so it's a good idea to check the time.

There was a flower exhibition when I visited. So there was a whole bunch of flowers on display. The shrine itself is decently large and even had an animal pen with deers in there! The shrine is surrounded by lush greenery and exudes calm and soothing peacefulness. It is however quite out of the way to visit as it requires a few train changes and limited ways of leaving. Making the trip a day commitment. But it was well worth it for me!

Go to Yahiko station and then walk about 20 minutes according to the available signs.
Yahiko station is an old station, still retains the old architecture and does not have an automatic card check counter. There will be staff to check train tickets.
There is also a treasure that is a 2.3m long sword called Shida no Otachi, the longest sword and included in the list of Cultural Property of Japan.
In particular, in the temple grounds there are two stones called "Hi no tama ishi" (火の玉石) which means "stone of fireballs", or commonly known as "Omokaru no ishi" (重) 軽の石) means "light heavy stone". It is said that when standing in front of these two stones, pray, then if you lift the stone and it feels light, your wish will come true, but if it is heavy, the wish will not come true.

Came here by car. Easy to get to. Huge parking space, easy access. The shrine is big and really nice to visit, the personnel (mikos) friendly and helpful. Just don't expect English. Japanese is required, however broken it may be. There's also a tourist district which we took a wide berth around because I don't trust these kinds of places in general.
Anyway I wanted to buy Omamori and the miko was nice and patient enough to explain to me what the difference between them was.
We came back two days later by train. More of a pain, but still doable. Also the train station looks amazing. They're really trying to sell the whole shrine asthetic.

The shrine is solemn and good, but there is a ropeway in the back and you can go to the top of the mountain. There is also a shrine at the top. You can climb without using the ropeway, but it is impossible if you feel lighthearted. There is an observatory tower at the top where you can go up to the same height as the Sky Tree (634m), and you can enjoy a very good view of Sado Island.

The sacred shrine of Yahiko City is more than 1300 years old and is considered a national treasure. The highlight is that there is a large red torii pillar. Inside the shrine is full of mountains, small and large, with nature all around. Inside is a treasure display hall. There were many people coming to pay respects. There are sacred items to buy as souvenirs. I went in November. There was also a big flower festival that was very beautiful.

The shrine is quite out of the way from the city. About 50 mins drive. We arrived at around 4pm and it was already quite dark. It is worth a visit if you like shrines. The shrine looks quite rustic. There were a lot of people around. The shrine is about 5-10 mins walk from the car park. The car park is free parking.

Saifuku-ji is an ancient Buddhist temple that dates back to 1534. It is renowned for its exquisite and intricate wood carvings, particularly in the Kaisando annex, which features a stunningly detailed ceiling. The main temple and gardens are also noteworthy attractions. Visitors must pay an entrance fee of 500 yen to explore the temple's interior, where they can marvel at the beautiful wooden roof and admire Japanese-style depictions of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Amazing wood carvings and I am sure these are important treasures for the country ranging from old styles to newer lattice structures. 500 yen entry and the final last hut has the craziest (in a good way) interior I have seen in Japan. I can't help but be surprised that there is such a wonderful thing (excuse me) in such a mountain.
I've heard of Uncho Ishikawa, but this is the first time I've actually seen his work.
The carvings on the suspended ceiling are especially impressive.
Powerful dragons and tigers. It looks like it's about to pop out.
Glittering colors. I can't believe it was 150 years ago.
I think you should see it even if you pay the entrance fee of 500 yen.

Stunning. The main temple and gardens on their own would be worth a visit, but the carvings on the ceiling of the Kaisando annex are simply breathtaking. Amazing details and colors. Nagaoka, a city located on Japan's Honshu Island, offers a blend of cultural and natural attractions. The Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art showcases 20th-century Japanese art and features a serene sculpture garden, while the Niigata Prefectural Museum of History displays ancient Jōmon pottery. To the north, visitors can explore the majestic Yahiko Shrine at the base of Mount Yahiko, accessible by a scenic cable car ride.
Echigo Hillside Park is a scenic national park that offers visitors a variety of activities throughout the year. During the summer months, families can enjoy a lively water park and various play areas for children, including an indoor play area. Decided to drop by the park on route from Tokamachi to Niigata City. Glad we did it as Echigo hillside Park was a really beautiful and spacious park, you can easily spend half a day there. Iwappara Ski Resort offers a variety of slopes suitable for all skill levels, with ski lifts and a designated kids' play area available. The resort also provides equipment rentals and dining facilities. If arriving by car, there are numerous parking lots at the entrance. The snow park is very large and ideal for sledging and playing in the snow. However, the parking areas can be disorganized, and some restaurants may close early in the afternoon, so visitors are advised to plan their day accordingly.
If you are a beginner, this is a place for you. The terrain is flat and broad. Booked a 2 hour lesson from klook (SGD 190++ for 4 person). Can't believe we know how to ski after the 2 hour lesson!

One of the best skiing areas I have been in Japan. There are a variety of different ski lifts to go for different levels of difficulty. The highest peak closes at around 4:30pm which is a safe thing as during winter it gets dark rather early. However, if you still want to ski during the night there is also a night time area where you could ski well into The night. If you choose to go there be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes and gloves and they tend to freeze, yes, freeze as the snow melts on your gloves and freezes again.
You can choose to live in one of the few hotels that are on The mountainside (1/4 up The mountain I think) where they provide Japanese style living quarters with public bathrooms and onsen (little small) as well as catering (small portions for those who are used to western portions).
On a good day with clear weather the view is simply stunning. And is worth every penny and minute getting there.

The Echigo Sake Museum Ponshukan is a unique sake tasting bar located inside JR Echigo Yuzawa. This unconventional establishment features coin-operated dispensers offering a vast variety of sake, as well as rice balls and local souvenirs. The shop is easily recognizable by its mascot, a large drunken figure lying in front. Visitors are provided with tasting cups upon entry and can also enjoy delicious Japanese cucumbers seasoned with various salts.
For all sake lovers, this is sake heaven on earth!!! There are more than 100 types of sake to sample from. ¥500 gets you 5 tokens. Each sample is approximately 1 token. The bespoke sake may require more than 3 tokens. There is no reason not to like this place. Super love!!!

I could not appreciate sake until I came here. They rate them with dryness, aroma, and richness. I got a sake that was 5 star dry and 1 star aroma/richness and then got one with 1 star dry and 4 star aroma/richness. You can tell the difference with each one. It's a smaller place and when it was crowded, a lot of people were standing in front of the sake dispenser even if they were just drinking. It made it harder to get to the sake I wanted to try and to read the name plate and description.

The staff are polite and accommodating.

We stopped by the ponshukan on our first day in the area. There is a wide variety of sake to choose from, as well as some shochu and other tipples.
You exchange ¥500 for 5 gold-coin tokens and then use those tokens in the dispensing machines. We went through 15 gold-coins each. Some dispensers cost more than one coin, there are a good number of 2-coin machines and even one 7-coin machine! (We didn't try that one) If you want to get the most out of your coins, then there are plenty of 1-coin machines that have some great tasting sake. My favourite (number 69) was actually a 1-coin machine.
There are cucumbers and salt available as pallete-cleansers, but I opted for having an occasional water after some of the particularly strong tasting options.
There is no seating, it's standing room only. Which makes sense as customers (and you) will be moving back and forth to sample a number of drinks.
Fair warning: Beware of the alcohol % of number 95!

Kagura Ski Resort Tashiro Station is a popular destination for skiing enthusiasts due to its powdery slopes and access to backcountry terrain. It is especially suitable for beginners, boasting two fast lifts and a slow one without being too overcrowded. The resort offers access to the Naeba area and boasts a large ski area with high altitude, providing ideal snow conditions.
Went at end of April still good snow with lots of locals still skiing and boarding

Beautiful mountain with a view of a beautiful lake next to the slope. Doesn’t have very good snow till end of Dec but I would very recommend this slope for anytime after Jan. not too far from Tokyo so that’s a plus as well.

This is my new favorite spot to set up base! With relative easy access to all three areas: Naeba, Tashiro, & Kagura. Even if this area is closed (it has a shorter season than the other two) You can still bus it to the others. The pistes are awesome Dec-Feb! Once you get down the hill from the ropeway the deeper runs are nice and wide, & long. The lifts are relatively fast, and this place has the best powder of the three imo.
This is for folks that have their ski and board legs under them. I wouldn't recommend it if this is your first time on a board or skis. Naeba is the best if the three for that imo. (It also has seemingly more capability to accommodate the international crowd).
It has been the least crowded of the three each time I've went. The dressing room is tiny but the lobby is huge. Way better than Kagura. The ropeway to the slopes is The public bath was filthy, and I truly mean nasty for Japanese standards. Perhaps it was because I went in so late but there was film and hair in the water. I turned on the hot water to let it all flow over the side. A simple constant flow would alleviate it from getting so many bad reviews. I stepped on the hill. No park area that I found but you have Kagura area for that.
I went on Christmas Day Saturday and it wasn't too crowded at all. At times, I felt as if I had the hill to myself. My best experience in the greater Yuzawa area to date! I will definitely set up base here next time up.
BE EXTREMELY AWARE OF THE BUS SCHEDULES! I can’t stress this enough! It’s around 40 min to Echigo-Yuzawa Station. The last buses to or from run around 5pm. It’s around ¥10000 cab ride so plan accordingly! Firs bus runs around 5am with the next one around 8.

Tashiro is one of three areas at Kagura. Mostly wide open easy slopes. It takes a little time getting across to the Kagura and Mitsumata areas because you keep going more across the mountain rather than up (you'd need to be at least taking 5 lifts).
Due to its higher altitude, Kagura has one of the longest season in Japan (Nov-May) and there was still plenty of snow late (photos taken 30 Mar) and not too slushy, whereas at Naeba next door there wasn't much white stuff left.
There are two restaurants both not huge (they're packed during lunch hours), with other options over at Kagura or Mitsumata area. Strangely the restaurants offer no view of the lake despite both of them being right next to it! Instead go up lift Y for a spectacular view of the lake.

Nice little wood for a stroll. All the beech trees were planted after the war so are approximately the same size and well-spaced. This has led to this place getting its name. There is a pond with a bridge over it where photographers try to get photos of the trees reflected in the water. The different views of the forest during the four seasons are also interesting. The snowshoe walk in winter, run by some of the locals is supposed to be especially pretty. At that time the buildings in the car park are only visible by the roofs sticking up through the snow.

Two Lover's Point is a picturesque location situated on a cliff by the Sea of Japan. It is a popular spot for couples to hang love plates, ring bells, and admire the stunning sunset views. This romantic destination offers heart-shaped tags where lovers can make wishes and place them anywhere they desire. The area is adorned with beautiful blue waters that enhance its charm as an ideal location for couples seeking an intimate getaway.

Most of the lovers in Joetsu and Kashiwazaki have probably been to this cape. I took my dog there for the first time in about 20 years, and there was a nice seasonal breeze. There were just families and group travelers.
The bell of the cape is the main attraction, but there is also a walking road, so it is very pleasant to walk for a while. The trees are rustling in the sea breeze from spring to summer.
However, a walk on a rough sea day is just training. It's important to be able to laugh with each other because the atmosphere might get worse in the car on the way home.

The Hoshitoge Rice Terraces is a lush destination featuring picturesque rice fields with tiered, rolling terraces that are highly photographed. The area is renowned for its natural beauty and showcases human fortitude and endeavor. Despite the weather conditions, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the verdant landscape all year round. During spring, the terraces are filled with water which reflects the rising sun creating an awe-inspiring sight.

Beautiful terraced rice fields
This place is famous for its beautiful terraced rice fields.
From web site
Terraced fields are a form of rice field mainly used in mountainous areas. They are built to allow farming on steep slopes and to control water flow. It is also a popular tourist destination due to its scenic and cultural value. They are also important for preserving regional specialties and traditional agricultural methods.

Naoetsu Port Sado Ferry Terminal is a historical site near the former prisoner of war camp where Australian soldiers lost their lives during World War II. The terminal operates car ferries to Ogi Port on Sado, with boarding procedures for vehicles and passengers. During summer vacation season, the Koganemaru ferry serves this route. Passengers have noted the helpfulness of staff at the gate and reception, making for a comfortable journey to Sado.

The sailing was at 7am, but the building only opened at 6am. It seems that vehicles will board the ship each time, but passengers will only be able to board the ship after 45 minutes.
If you are bringing a vehicle, please fill out the application form and bring it to the reception desk. If you are only a customer, there is an automatic ticket office located a little away from the counter, which is convenient.
When the time comes, an announcement will be made that you can board the ship, so head to the ticket gate.
The gate will open when you scan the QR code written on your boarding ticket into the reader attached to the ticket gate.
If there is anything you do not understand, please ask a staff member.
I hope you will receive friendly customer service.
Compared to Niigata Port, there were fewer employees, and it felt lonely, probably because there were fewer passengers.
Additionally, the ships cruising the route between Naoetsu and Ogi seem to be smaller than those between Niigata and Ryotsu, and they are more likely to be canceled if the weather gets bad.
In fact, our return boat was canceled due to high waves, so we had to stay another night in Sado ^^;
It seems that it will be closed in mid-November, so please check in advance before using it.

現に、帰りの船が波が高い為に欠航となり、佐渡でもう一泊することになりました^^;

The vessel is the 2,483-ton Koganemaru, which is one size smaller than the huge car ferries that run on the Niigata-Otaru route, and as a result is susceptible to waves and winds. I've seen many people get seasick even when the waves are about 1m high, so if you're prone to motion sickness, you'll need to take motion sickness medication. Also, this ferry does not have a cafeteria shop, so you must bring your own food and drinks (there are vending machines for bread and sweets, juice and cup noodles).
The port is small and has a restaurant, waiting room, and ticket office. The vehicle waiting area is also easily visible in the space on the east side of the facility. There are souvenir shops and other shops, but they are not open when the first train leaves (7am). The dining room is open, so you can eat some food before boarding the ship.

Seki Onsen Ski Area is a compact ski resort that's famous for its deep powder snow, steep slopes, and tree runs. It's the ultimate destination for freeriders who crave an adrenaline rush on mean deep powder rides. However, this resort is not recommended for inexperienced riders due to the depth of the snow. Avalanche kits are highly recommended as well, and solo riding is not advisable.
Epic powder heaven.
Not for beginners.

Indeed great snow here but you'll get bored quickly with only two lifts, and one (the single pizzabox) was closed the day we came... The primary lift only accesses two runs, one groomed and one ungroomed.... Seems there is opportunity for a bit of exploration for backcountry deep powder, so snowboarders seem to love it here. We spent a half-day afternoon as a warm up to full days at the bigger resorts, not a bad option if you arrive around 12:30 and only 3000 yen. There are no crowds here but you could say that about anywhere in Myoko.... Slope-side restaurant was charming.

Seki onsen ski area is privately owned by a very nice and cool family. The runs are mostly in groomed and the food is home cooked style and it is THE BEST ski area lunch I have ever had in Japan!

The Toyama City Hall observation tower offers a free elevator ride up to 70 meters above sea level, providing panoramic views of the city and, on clear days, the stunning Tateyama Mountain Range. Visitors can park in the underground lot and receive a stamp for free parking when visiting the rooftop deck. The location is ideal for enjoying views of the alps and city, especially during cherry blossom season when rows of Sakura trees line the nearby river.
Only stayed about 10 minutes, but the view was amazing.
Michael Mores — Google review
Amazing views considering it’s free to head up and observe.
Leena Sharma — Google review
A free observation tower in a good location. The opening hours allow to see the sunset and night view which is good. Even has free binoculars. Slow Elevator but other than that it's all good.
Jonathan Mischke — Google review
This place was very nice in terms of getting a birds eye view of the city. On clear days the mountains can be seen in the background which is really nice. Also the entry is free of charge. It is a recommended place if someone is visiting Toyama City.
Amit Hasan — Google review
It is free. You can enjoy the view of Toyama city at a height, plus snow mountain view if you are lucky in clear, sunny day.
Kim Yoon Liau — Google review
If you drive, you can park in the underground parking lot. I went on a Sunday and there were only a few cars. If you take the elevator to the rooftop observation deck, there is a stamp to put on your parking ticket. If you show it to the staff when you exit the parking lot, you will not be charged for parking for short periods of time. There are also restrooms in the basement. There are many buildings around the observatory that are taller than the observatory, but the view is good, and it is better when you can see Tateyama. There is also a free telescope.
Tadashi Toyama — Google review
If you are in Toyama, the observation tower is a must go!
1) you can enjoy the view of the alps and the city.
2) during Sakura you can see rows of Sakura along he river beside and take a stroll along the river located just right beside the observation tower.

The Toyama City Local History Museum, housed in a restored castle, showcases artifacts and art from the Maeda Clan's historical period. The museum also features a serene park and gardens surrounding the castle. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the river from the upper deck, while a media presentation every three minutes provides insight into the castle's past. With ample parking space for buses, this lesser-known attraction is worth adding to any itinerary exploring local shrines and temples in Toyama.
The toyama castle was very interesting.

Historical site near Toyama City. I am lucky to witness flocks of cranes resting at the tree next to this historical architecture. Serendipity and occasionally you will also hear cranes communicating to one another. This is an unforgettable experience for me as I hardly had this rare opportunity watching these birds not one, but more than 30s, resting on the tree branches. Simply amazing and had it not due to time constraints, I would sit nearby this beautiful place watching the birds and hopefully catch the sunset here as well. I made a right decision to visit Toyama!

Worth the visit specially for the nice view inside the castle and the Museum of the Jpanese Paintings nearby. The little japanese Park ist a Gem, with clear water, beautiful trees and small bridges.

Great building, Nice exhibit. All of the written commentary for the exhibits was in japanese. No problem- It would be nice if tourists could access a QR code or recording that has translation into another language. Japan has a wonderful heritage and culture but often only the Japanese can access it fully.

Incredibly beautiful place! Media presentation each 3 minutes about castle’s history and many historical artifacts. Upper deck has an amazing view of river and gardens. Has a parking lot including for buses. I recommend you pay a visit!

Lovely grounds and beautiful castle. Inside is a museum with artifacts from the original caste as well as some art and other displays. I would say combine this castle with some of the local shrines and temples in Toyama and you have yourself a great full day trip. Toyama-Jo is often overlooked by foreign visitors so I would give it a try just to avoid the crowds at other castles and experience some more Maeda Clan history.

Etchū-Yatsuo Station is located in Yatsuo Town, Toyama, known for the Owara Kaze no Bon Festival. The town features a charming streetscape with stone-paved roads and houses that resemble the old Japanese era. The station is manned and offers a green window where visitors can obtain a station stamp from friendly staff. Surrounding the station, there's ample space and seating, creating a tranquil rural atmosphere.
I think this station is near in Oonagataki Mountain .
This place is not very accessible to people, because you can really say that it is a mountain but in the heart of the mountain there is a path and you can visit it because the nature is very beautiful and you can breathe fresh air.
And just now I saw a Blueberry tree inside the mountain.

The station building is also spacious and has plenty of chairs. Unless you're busy, the area around the station is quiet, with only the occasional local walking around (well, I personally think it's nice because it gives it a rural feel). To get to the other side of the station building, you need to cross the overpass to the north of the station. In the station melodies, the one on the station building side is Mary's sheep, and the one on the island side is a grass horse race. It seems that there is a bicycle air pump.
Below is the Owarakaze Obon experience
About 10 years ago, I took the Takayama Line to see Wara. There were a lot of people at the station, and a temporary ticket gate had been set up. The area in front of the station was packed with people, stalls were lined up, and Owara Kaze no Bon music was playing throughout the town. It was interesting to see various special trains running. Last year's Owara Kaze Obon was canceled due to the coronavirus, but I hope that it will be held again this year or next.

Shirakabe Dozogai Street is a heritage site located in the peaceful town of Hida Furukawa, which boasts traditional buildings spread along a narrow street.

On the afternoon of May 2nd, I came to see the carp swimming that I saw on the news and to take a walk around Shirakabe Dozogai. There is a free 🅿️ at Hida City Hall. The river is faster than I expected, and the carp seek shelter under rocks, and sometimes ride the current, never getting bored. There were restrictions on feeding, and the box was closed. Flowers bloom along the river and are beautiful. You can try your hand at braiding at Hida Furukawa Sakura Bussankan. I stopped by Mishima Wa Candle Shop and purchased some candles. He gave us detailed instructions on how to be careful when using candles religiously and how to easily secure candles during viewing. At Watanabe Sake Brewery, we purchased the award-winning Junmai Ginjo Horai. It was an alcoholic drink used in ANA international first class, and it wasn't on store shelves, so I checked to see if it was in stock and it was in stock at the right time. The manufacturing date is 2023.05B. It was a nostalgic streetscape.

Beautiful street in a beautiful town, short train ride from Takayama if you are not staying in HidaFurukawa.
Do note that the carps in canals will NOT be seen during winter months as the locals use canal water for melting snow during winter.
Which we found out the hard way but it is still very nice to stroll.

Hida Furukawa is a very quiet town with not many tourists each day but it is charming especially this the streets, the water channel has very clear and there are many koi fish in it. It's another city that I fell in love with.
Amnat Wangboonkerd — Google review
The old centre of Hida town is an underrated and less popular attraction than many similar places in this region, and hence seems less visited than other heritage sites. There are relatively few tourist shops, restaurants or commercial operations along the old streets, which are tranquil (when we visited on a May afternoon), attractive, and beautifully maintained. There is a lot of history here and without the hustle and bustle of mass-market tourists it is much easier to appreciate. Small canals line the residential streets, and temples and shrines, sake distillers, candle-makers, warehouses and museums are scattered here and there to add to the ambience.
If you are driving, there is free parking opposite the Hidashi Bunkakoryu Center just north of the train tracks, and the station is also just a short walk from Shirakabe Dozogai Street if you come by train (15 minutes from Takayama I believe).
I enjoyed wandering this district more than the old Takayama town centre just because of the peace and quiet and lack of commercial development. Highly recommended.
Howard Banwell — Google review
A quiet town that didn't attract much tourist attention as compared to Takayama however it definitely worth a visit especially if one would like to experience the traditional feeling of Japan.
It is easily access via train and relatively small and very clean, exploring on foot is recommended. Spare few hours to explore the charming parts of the town.

No pictures. The place serves as an educational centre how the wood building structures are hole together without the nails in Japan. Which says to be expensive to have such building for houses.
