Daihonzan Eiheiji

Mentioned on
Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Daihonzan Eiheiji is a Zen Buddhist temple that dates back to the 13th century and boasts an understated yet impressive complex comprising a monastery and ancient trees. Reviews of the site indicate that it manages to be both active with monk's activities and tranquil, inspiring awe in visitors. Despite only being able to spend a short hour there, many have noted that they would have happily stayed for longer due to the sheer size of the complex.
One of my favourite temples to visit. It’s a large complex with many buildings full of beautiful wooden carvings and well preserved artwork. Monks and guests actively live and practice here, so sometimes you can get an intimate peek into their daily life and practice.
Diane Huynh — Google review
Very peaceful place, very large and set in a beautiful setting. You will have to remove shoes but will get sleepers to walk around. The self guided "tour" is well arranged so that you see all the different buildings and get to go inside. English signs describe each building function. You do see the monks going on their daily rituals. All in all, close to 2 hours at a slow pace. Most parking in the high street is around 300 yen for the day.
Seb Camborieux — Google review
Other reviewers have said all of what I'll say already but it really is something else. At once busy with the monk's activities but still tranquil and awe-inspiring. The large, complex structure could have kept me much longer than the short hour I had there. The staff is kind and helpful, while the signs and guidebook are informative for grasping at least the basics of what the different halls and figures mean. I have never been to such an active temple before, but I suppose it's only natural for a founding temple of a popular sect. Highly recommend.
Ian Lawrence — Google review
Very peaceful and spiritual place. I loved the way the monks take care about inner space and outside gardens, this is real ZEN. Thank you! I would like to come here once more.

on a saturday in Feb, visiting this temple in Fukui by car. it was a cold day, but not snowing. some snow were left around. paying fee of about 500 yen for an adult, taking off my shoes to slippers, and walking around in the temple. it took about 1 hour for us to go back. it cant be helped but i wanted to walk around with my slippers due to the footache... at last i made it around. many rooms here to worship or pray. it was a nice stay to see and know about about 1000 years old Buddhist temple.

One of the must visit place in Japan. You should once try Zazen at Eiheiji Temple. They have 3 times per day Zazen for outside people. The temple Monk will provide and show to you how to to do Zazen for beginners. You never forget your first Zazen experience

Absolutely beautiful temple. Very congruent with the natural surroundings. Many different views, angles, and combinations of trees, hills and the architecture to take in.
Kirsten Luehrs — Google review
Many, many steps, so be prepared. There are some Buddhist prayer services that happen and visitors may be allowed to watch and listen. The whole setting takes you back 1000 years. It's a very serene and calming environment.
Michael McArthur — Google review
Glorious temple complex, embedded in the forest. Sprawling buildings across and up the hill. Wonderfully maintained old wooden structures, with newer walkways to help preserve the original ones. Mossy rocks and century old trees adding to the bewilderment.
Jason Chuei — Google review
One of the five Zen Buddhism 曹洞宗. ( Another one is 臨濟宗 located in Taiwan). When I sit upper the top temple, close the eyes and I feel it’s peaceful inner the mind. The energy from nature and the fresh feeling across the body top to bottom. What’s a amazing place to slow down pace. Additionally, I suggest to buy the inbound bus ticket first before coming to 永平寺temple. It’s 750 yen/ person to east side of Fukui station.
Matt CHUNG — Google review
Very impressive, take your time to visit it and take a look inside, it is worth it and very cheap to visit. You will wake through an old temple with many rooms to discover new experiences. If you go down the street a little bit you will also find various cheap ice shops I can just recommend to visit the ice shop screenshoted below

Probably the most beautiful temple I’ve ever seen and been! Everything looks like in the movie, the atmosphere was cool and spiritually peaceful, maybe because it was cloudy, a bit rainy and misty. The temple is immense! 2 hours aren’t enough to see everything. I went there by car so it’s very easy to get there, but for those who go by train or by bus it will take time, but definitely worth it!
George Yajima — Google review
Huge temple complex that dates back 500 or so years. A lot of it is out of bounds but that doesn't mean you'll be missing anything, there is plenty to see. It is very ornate in places, the carving on the wood is brilliant. As a working temple/ monastery there are occasional services and blessings going on, these can be great to witness.

(Translated by Google) A popular hand-made 10% soba restaurant that always has long lines. Fukui is famous for its grated soba, and I ordered the large zaru that can be eaten two ways. The soba itself has a pleasant slimy texture, and the flavor is outstanding. It's delicious on its own, but ``oroshi soba'' is eaten with a special dashi soup containing grated daikon radish, which has a sweet taste. The other “Kenzo soba” is amazing, and the spicy daikon radish mixed with the special dashi soy sauce has a strong kick! You'll get addicted to it because it tastes so good without any seasoning! . I took the opportunity to order ``Kenarui Pudding'' after the meal. Keralui = means envious. Based on smooth buckwheat tea pudding, soft milk with strong buckwheat tea, buckwheat powder, buckwheat crackers... A very soba dessert! . After the meal, I was filled with satisfaction, so it's no wonder there was a long line! . 8 bowls of large zaru (6,320 yen) *Eated by 4 people Keralui pudding (490 yen) (Original)

(Translated by Google) It was my first time visiting. I arrived 15 minutes before they opened at 11am, and I was 5th in the reservation list. I managed to get in on the first try and ordered a large serving of grated soba. The menu includes grated soba, kenzo soba, and gogo soba. Kenzo soba contains squeezed juice from spicy daikon radish, so if you don't like spiciness, it's better to use grated soba. Gogo soba is a soba that allows you to enjoy both grated soba and kenzo soba. It was a large portion, but it was still delicious enough to eat. By the time I left the store, there was a line outside. Since it's a famous store, I think it's understandable that there are many cars with out-of-prefecture license plates. Since there is a long line on weekdays, I imagine it will be even bigger on Saturdays and Sundays. Although it's a small store located on the outskirts of the city center, there is always a line on weekends. I think this store is easy to visit by car as there is a parking lot right in front of the store. Personally, I have never met a single serving that was satisfying to me at a soba restaurant, but this ``Kenzo'' is probably no exception.

(Translated by Google) This is the closest restaurant to Eiheiji Temple. It was a store with a souvenir shop attached, and the facility was new and clean. The grated tempura soba has one large shrimp on it. The freshly fried shrimp were plump, and the soba noodles were chewy and went down smoothly. I also ordered sesame tofu to go with the sake. We recommend drinking it while eating it as a plump drink. Considering the price and the amount of soba, I think it was a little expensive. But since it's completely handmade, I guess that can't be helped. The dining room was located at the back of the store and was quite spacious. If you make a purchase of 1,000 yen or more, you can park for free while visiting Eiheiji Temple (the original parking lot only has paid parking), and there are other shops in the area, but this is the closest to the entrance of Eiheiji Temple. It's a shop. I ordered a set of grated soba and sauce cutlet. The taste itself wasn't bad, but sauce katsudon only has pure cutlet and rice lol.
