Izakaya Kaz
Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Izakaya Kaz is a Japanese restaurant located near The Pub, marked by a set of red lanterns. Despite initial difficulties in securing a table, the friendly staff eventually accommodated the guests. Although there were some language barriers and apparent understaffing, the service remained attentive. The sukiyaki set for two, along with drinks and dessert, amounted to 10,200 for two people.
We didn’t go for the hot pot instead we had a mix of dishes. The four of us shared plenty dishes and tried different japonese drinks. We loved it. After 10 days in Japan and always looked at trying different food and we found this place one of the best we have been to.
Florian Guillemard — Google review
Great food. Book aheqd though. They fill up quickly.
Nate Wilson (natskis) — Google review
This place shares a building with The Pub but that’s where the similarities end. The food at The Pub was a bit disappointing, while at Isakaya Kaz, it was decidedly better. The prices are higher at Kaz and you will need a reservation, it’s still probably the best of the 2 places. The karaage was fantastic and the sake flight was amazing. They do have a lot of fish so if that’s not your cup of tea then The Pub might be more to your liking.

Super good sushi and tempura. The okonomiyaki was very rich and a little overwhelming

Oh, what a phenomenal evening here. A friend found this lovely place and a group of 6 colleagues from Germany, Sweden and Japan enjoyed the time 100%.
Dirk Hartmann — Google review
The best meal we had in Hakuba. Delicious food and super attentive service.
Anthony Hughes — Google review
Really delicious, especially for a restaurant that caters specifically to hotels! We did the sukiyaki and thought it was incredible.
Naomi Lopes — Google review
Amazing food and amazing service. Definitely book ahead and make a reservation because this place is worth it. The sashimi is locally sourced and so fresh, you can taste good produce when it comes to sashimi and nigiri. Service were so friendly especially for foreigners and their sake options were stellar. Do hope they add more hot sake to the list, but the one they had was amazing! Wish we could book again but it’s very busy for a good reason.
Erin — Google review
Great service and friendly staff but we did not enjoy the food so much. We tried both the Kaz and Mansaku and both used the same shabu beef quality which was horrible. Convenient since we are staying at the hotel. But definitely not a repeat.
Myia Garcia — Google review
When we couldn’t get a table at Mansaku, we were looking for another Japanese restaurant nearby. We saw a set of red lanterns next to “The Pub.”
At first the receptionist said the restaurant was full, however, we could see empty tables. We insisted and she finally agreed to seat us (otherwise, I would give it 5-stars).
The staff has limited English but was very friendly. Although seemed short staffed for a full restaurant, they were attentive.
With a sukiyaki set for 2, with drinks and dessert, we paid ¥10,200 for 2 pax.
The food was excellent, the sukiyaki sauce was not overly sweet or salty.
Warning: the ventilation is not great, so your clothes will smell!

Maiko Snow Resort is a winter sports destination that offers skiing and snowboarding, equipment rentals, and a hotel with dining facilities. The resort can be reached by taking the Shinkansen and shuttle bus. Despite being busy on weekends, guests have plenty of choices for brand-name snowboard rentals, with around 30 minutes wait time for the gondola. Once at the top, visitors can enjoy hours of snow activities in the soft white powder.
We took Shinkansen + Shuttle bus to arrive Maiko Snow Resort at around 10am, and it was already full of skiiers ~ the snowboard rental provided lots of choice of different brands. As it was a busy weekend, the wait for gondola was around 30min. However, once reaching the top you can spend hours there.

Nice, snow resort
james — Google review
The service at Maiko is the best I've seen in the Yuzawa area. It also has good slopes for both practicing or having fun. The only downside is its low altitude, so the snow isn't as good I feel.
vic Jean — Google review
Very crowded on weekends. It seems that they have very cheap tickets for high school & college kids, so they probably make up 90% of the visitors.
You could spend more time waiting in lines than actual skiing/snowboarding. The ticket line took almost 30 mins. The gondola queue also took almost 1 hour, and even longer in the morning. The lowest/main lifts also took about 20-30 mins of waiting in line.
The rental at the ski center is very small & not really able to handle the crowd. They just make you to pick your own wear, boots, board and line up carrying everything for 1 hour in a cramped space in order to check them out. Probably best to get rental from the shops just outside the ski center.

My first winter trip here was awesome. View is great. Good for beginner. There is group and private ski class with rentals. Food inside resort is affordable and delicious. Open from 7am to 10pm.

Waist deep powder snow. Great for all levels. Lessons available.
The lift placement is well thought out. Though they often have some lifts closed for seemingly no reason...
Not crowded.
Staff at the rental shop we're very unhelpful though. I was disappointed by that..

The Echigo Sake Museum Ponshukan is a unique sake tasting bar located inside JR Echigo Yuzawa. This unconventional establishment features coin-operated dispensers offering a vast variety of sake, as well as rice balls and local souvenirs. The shop is easily recognizable by its mascot, a large drunken figure lying in front. Visitors are provided with tasting cups upon entry and can also enjoy delicious Japanese cucumbers seasoned with various salts.
For all sake lovers, this is sake heaven on earth!!! There are more than 100 types of sake to sample from. ¥500 gets you 5 tokens. Each sample is approximately 1 token. The bespoke sake may require more than 3 tokens. There is no reason not to like this place. Super love!!!
Elena L — Google review
I could not appreciate sake until I came here. They rate them with dryness, aroma, and richness. I got a sake that was 5 star dry and 1 star aroma/richness and then got one with 1 star dry and 4 star aroma/richness. You can tell the difference with each one. It's a smaller place and when it was crowded, a lot of people were standing in front of the sake dispenser even if they were just drinking. It made it harder to get to the sake I wanted to try and to read the name plate and description.
Greg Caliwag — Google review
1st time trying sake sampling machine! 500 yen for 5 coins, and most of the sake costs you 1-3 coins, i.e. 100-300 yen each. So it's not that cheap compared to other local sake stores, but there are plenty of sake choices than other shops. It's an interesting experience that you must try once.
Victor Li — Google review
Amazing sake brewery tour in English. The guide is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They can give many cool facts about sake that are hard to learn about otherwise! There's even a fun photo opportunity at the end of the tour, as well as an excellent sake tasting experience!
Amy Yuka Vogenthaler — Google review
Service really bad towards non Japanese. Sake taste also just as unfriendly. Go to the Niigata or Nagaoka station branches. Too many foreigners around Echigo and the staff are not having it.
Donpen The — Google review
You exchange ¥500 for 5 gold-coin tokens and then use those tokens in the vending machines.
There is more than enough sake to choose from. Nearly 100 sake to choose from! You can also choose Shōchū and I believe I saw wine but we were there for the sake.
You can also get cucumbers to munch on. You can either have that with various types of salt or miso paste.
Water is available to cleanse your pallet.
Very enjoyable and heaven if you love sake!
Jenny D — Google review
We can enjoy many kinds of sake with only 500 yen. It was too crowded with many tourists... The selection is very plentiful, so I could not enjoy everything but each of them have various characters. It is because I like sake the best. You can buy it if you find sake you like.

A wealth of samples with Niigata nihonshu, wine and umeshu. Anyone can stay longer and chat with friends while waiting for your train home.
Ricaleen Celeste-Mendoza — Google review
I give it a 5 star! It’s so awesome where you can taste literally all sake made by the neighbours!
Jean Sheung — Google review
Nice place for sake tasting. For those that wonder how it works. You pass by the cashier and for 500¥ you get 5 coins. They give you a cup and you are able to serve yourself. Some sake required one coin and can go up to four. You are able to taste a lot of different sake from different regions and there is also wine.
Cédrick Nault — Google review
A place for sake tasting. Located inside JR Echigo Yuzawa. A really weird and spectacular place. Too many kinds of sake were presented as vending machine. At first while you enter the staff will give you tasting cups. Japanese cucumbers with too many kinds of salt was so delicious. Always crowded. The shop was easily saw. You will see their mascot, the large figure of drunken guy lay down in front of the shop.

Enjoying walking around the souvenir shops inside JR Echigo-Yuzawa Station.
There are a lot of local foods, sweats and Japanese sake as well as local restaurants.
Great place to visit and enjoy!

Drink Deep. You’re in the Snow Country.
The Ponshukan Saké Tasting Room features nearly 100 types of saké from Niigata’s 90 breweries. Arranged by geographic location, take your pick from among seasonal specials, staff recommendations, or whichever labels happen to catch your eye.
Visitors can pay ¥500 at the door to receive a saké cup and five tasting coins. Sample up to five cups of saké or use multiple tasting coins to sample from a selection of premium saké.
As the microbrewery saké capital of Japan, there is no better place to experience saké than Niigata.
KIICHIRO KOBORI — Google review
There are 130 coin operated vending machines to choose from. Most of them dispense sake, but they also do soju, plum wine and red wines as well. Coins are 100 yen each. Most machines take 1 coin, and premium drinks are 2 or more.
There is space to put your bags or coats if you don’t want to carry them around, but nothing is secured, so do so at your own risk.
The staff are polite and accommodating.
Lorne Inglis — Google review
We stopped by the ponshukan on our first day in the area. There is a wide variety of sake to choose from, as well as some shochu and other tipples.
You exchange ¥500 for 5 gold-coin tokens and then use those tokens in the dispensing machines. We went through 15 gold-coins each. Some dispensers cost more than one coin, there are a good number of 2-coin machines and even one 7-coin machine! (We didn't try that one) If you want to get the most out of your coins, then there are plenty of 1-coin machines that have some great tasting sake. My favourite (number 69) was actually a 1-coin machine.
There are cucumbers and salt available as pallete-cleansers, but I opted for having an occasional water after some of the particularly strong tasting options.
There is no seating, it's standing room only. Which makes sense as customers (and you) will be moving back and forth to sample a number of drinks.
Fair warning: Beware of the alcohol % of number 95!

A nice sake shop. You can also buy other Omiage, also the very big Onigiris (Rice Balls).
It’s in the station, so you can reach it very fast.

Great variety of Sake and other liquors to choose from. 130 types in total. ¥500 gives you 5 coins, most of the sakes are 1 coin per cup. The premium ones are 2 coins and above. Definitely worth a visit if you're around the area.

Waiting for my Shinkansen I walked in, amazed at how many sake you can sample
500jpy for 5 coins and you are given a small cup
Recommended sakes are on the wall, but there are some I wanted to try that are here
Some same cost more than one coin
Had great fun trying different sake, as ppl know Niigata is famous for sake

Conveniently located right at the train station. Managed a quick visit right before boarding our Shinkansen - and chanced upon this really awesome umeshu (which I ended up purchasing from the store).
A must-go if you are a Sake fan! There are SO MANY types of sake to test! ❤️
Emi G — Google review
The price was 500 yen and you get 5 coins in return, the sake cost 1-2 coins depending on the type, there's a recommended sake list on the board if you dont know where to start. Was very fun! This way you can really tell the difference between types of sake

I really love this place a lot, great service with nice facility with nice slopes to cover different level of ski/snowboarder. Highly recommend!

I'm a beginner to skiing and struggled alot even on the beginner routes. If you are a beginner, I recommend buying just 1 ride up the ski lift (500 yen) instead of the Day pass because it could take most of your day to get to the bottom once.
Please go for the ski lessons to make the descent easier (I didnt go for any). Also wear waterproof pants if you do not intend to rent theirs. My pants were completely soaked by the time I reached the bottom. It was still pretty fun.

Very nice and beautiful ski resort nearby Gala Yuzawa station. There are so many free shuttle bus to take in every station. You can take the Shinkansen from Tokyo here. Very convenient for transportation.
The ski course are so wonderful and huge. People here are not as many as in Gala. And restaurants serves great dishes. So come here and enjoy it!

Family friendly resort.
it's great facilities and easy access from Tokyo

Not a huge domain to ski, but it's just fine for a day or 2 at max. Lots of restaurants available too, although the quality and healthiness of the foods are quite low, I advise you bring your own food and eat it there. I was very much surprised by the heated seats in one of the lift, such a great idea.

Just Amazing! I went there after peak season but around mid march but the place was full of snow and had great time. They have lots of restaurants and and rentals shops there it’s convenient if you need something you can go buy it or rent it.

This year has been great with a lot of snow. Ishiuchi Maruyama usually has a moist, heavy snow and lot of rain, but Jan through mid-Feb was perfect. Powdery snow and great view from the top, where you can see a beautiful white paddy fields. The gondola and lift at the center entrance are very high-tech. The seats on lift is warm and comfy. Definitely recommend lift than gondola. They also run night time ski everyday until end of Feb. During the weekend, they will even re-groom certain slopes. Night skiing has another beautiful view.

It’s been a little over a year since visiting, but this is definitely my favorite spot to hit out of the three resorts (Yuzawa Kogen & GALA). It has long connecting trails with differing features, big park area, and also beginner friendly snaking trails. Will come again when the next opportunity presents itself 👍
Eastie Forscher — Google review
The slope is too sharp. I cant ski down by myself. Maybe need more practice.

Better slopes and more variety than nearby Gala. Reasonable prices for lift passes and rental. Good season this year so there was still 2m of snow at the end of March despite the low altitude.

In February 2024, there was little snow and the quality was not very good, but the lift tickets were reasonable and enjoyable for the many courses.
It is a good slope with a high-speed gondola, lifts, and many restaurants.
It was a weekday, so the lifts were smooth and uncrowded.
The restaurants in the ski resort have a variety of prices and tastes, so I recommend you to find a restaurant a little far away from the ski resort because it is inexpensive and has a large amount of food.
The night skiing is available until 21:00.
I would like to visit in a year when there is a lot of snow.

4.5/5 Went there three times this season. The 中央口リフト is out the other day so the line before other lift with smaller capacity is enormous. Waited almost an hour to get to the top. Other than that, great service and good snow. Definitely worth your lift ticket money.

Despite this ski resort is on relatively low ground, it has a good mix of decently long runs if you start off from the top to the bottom.
The ski resort has a lot of variations for the different courses. And it is famous for parks.
Monster pipe, mini halfpipe, kickers, boxes and rails.
For beginners, there is a Hatsuka-ishi area which is perfect for beginners to start learning all the basics.

The ski resort is huge and has different lanes for beginners to experts. The weekend I went was packed with people. Making it unpleasant for me as a beginner to practice and worry about not bumping into people. The snowfall this year is little, so in some areas, you can see the mud on the hills.

Convenient ski resort coming from Tokyo ! Free shuttle bus from JR Echigo Yuzawa station to Naeba Prince Hotel. Though the hotel is a bit dated, it’s still a good option where you have everything you need for a relaxed ski holiday.
Have to mention the 2 onsens are quite crowded most of the time
Greenie YY — Google review
A Prince Resort with full range of services for everyone…except Snow scoots or Snow Moto’s only allowed on 3 of the lower lifts. This means you can’t access any of the upper slopes and only 1/2 of the lower.
Strangely the connected Kagura Tashiro and Mitsumata areas also owned by Prince resorts allow them 100% on all the lifts and runs!
WHY???
The hotel is way to expensive and there are many better choices in Yuzawa area.
The ski area itself is not very big and the runs are too steep for most…
The Kagura area is much better with a wider choice of terrain.

One of my favorite ski resorts in Japan! About 2 - 3 hours away from Tokyo. Tons of food options between the resort and hotel. Plenty of space for children of all ages. Slopes are more for beginners and advanced skiers and snowboarders with a couple options for experts. Lots of activities and places to visit outside of the resort as well. Let Naeba be your first experience!!

Prince Hotel near the Naeba ski resort offers customers retro furnishings and all the necessary 70s amenities, classic dish choices from the era and staff service that encourages you to be independent and self-reliant.
If one wishes to relive or experience the unique charm of the 1970s, Prince Hotel provide their customers with a nostalgic journey at a reasonable price (about $800USD for seven days stay)

Pretty good skiing here - all depends on snowfall. Well equipped with many different runs. Slopes were partly icy; the resort tries to keep the slopes usable by grooming every morning. Lifts were not too crowded but the two gondolas had long queues at times. Overall rating 7/10.
Dirk Hebecker — Google review
I like this place for the reason that it has all the planes and altitudes we need for fun with snow. From beginners to advance players can have fun at this resort be it ski or snowboarding. Even we have plenty places to have fun for childrens.
There are good enough food restaurants available there to quench your hunger. Rental gears are easily available at the spot or from nearby places around there.
Also, this place is accessible by bus 🚌 easily from Yuzawa station which is about 1 hour bus ride.
Kuber Sodari — Google review
Highly recommend checking the winds before you come skiing here. I dont know when they close the gondalas, but the winds were 13 gusting 35 and they were all shut down both days I was here. What you’re left with is two beginner lifts and two intermediate lifts, all shorter than 5 min rides. As an advanced skiier I had skiied the entire mountain and got bored within 2 hours. If you’re just starting out this might be an okay resort, but there’s no reason for an advanced skiier to come here on a windy day over Hakube or Shiga Kogen

The coolest destination in Gunma prefecture. There’s some good energy here. There’s many dining options, attractions, and photo opportunities available . If it’s not on your “bucket list”, it should be.
Parking. There’s free parking and toilets close to the roadside station (zip-line/ski area) walking down is not difficult or long at all.

This open plaza and the yubatake are centrally located in Kusatsu. There are restaurants, souvenir shops, and even the Yumomi Show building surrounding it. It is beautiful during the day and night, with illuminations during the latter. The foot bath next to it is a great place to stop and take a rest too.

The performance wasn't very long. A lot of filler with a lengthy introduction and long line to wait to buy tickets and to be seated. You cannot repurchase tickets online. We caught the 3:30pm performance and had to start waiting around 2:40pm at the box office to wait until they sell tickets at 3pm. Then waited another half hour while seated for the performance to begin. There's no obvious sign for where to line up for tickets so even though we were first to arrive, later 8 people got in front of us because apparently we lined up at the wrong window. But we still managed to get front and centre seats. A lot of reviews complain about the intro but we just used Google translate to listen to the mc and were able to piece together what she was saying and enjoyed it a lot more that way. There is a coupon on their website for 50cents off.

Ubatake boasts a variety of shops, yet a subtle sulfur scent permeates the area. While exploring, take the opportunity for a leisurely walk around, but be mindful that the distinct odor might linger in the surroundings. Despite the sulfur smell, the diverse range of shops provides an intriguing experience for visitors. The unique offerings within the area make it worth venturing through, allowing one to immerse themselves in the local ambiance.
The sulfur odor, while present, doesn't overshadow the charm of the place. It's advisable to allocate some time for a casual stroll, savoring the offerings while being aware of the lingering scent. This distinctive characteristic might be a part of the locality's natural features, contributing to its identity and adding a peculiar element to the overall experience.
Ultimately, the exploration of Ubatake, though accompanied by a faint sulfur aroma, offers a delightful blend of shops and local charm. It's an opportunity to discover a unique side of the area, provided one takes the time to embrace its offerings while acknowledging the particular olfactory element that accompanies the visit."

I went in march so it was snowy. It's a beautiful place to enjoy a hot spring. The area is pretty small so in just a day I walked the entire place. There are a lot of different shops to spend the day eating but many are packed so remember to go early to avoid long queues. I recommend visiting in winter time, the snow and the cold helps to enjoy more the very scalding temperatures of the hot springs. Oh ! every Friday evening there is a public onsen open for mix genders and families that you can wear your own swimsuit and cost around ¥800.

Recharge at Kusatsu Onsen!
Having spent a day in the great outdoors, it is time to relax in one of Kusatsu’s natural hot spring baths, commonly known as onsen.
Bathing has been a major part of Japanese culture since antiquity, and Kusatsu Onsen’s baths are a fantastic chance to dip your toe (and more!) into this essentially Japanese cultural experience. Do not just take our word for it either—Japan’s major travel agents have voted Kusatsu Onsen the number-one onsen in Japan for over sixteen years in a row.
The bountiful waters drawn directly from the Yubatake hot spring fields naturally contain acid, sulfur-containing aluminum sulphate, and chloride, with pH values between 1.7 and 2.1, and temperatures varying between 51 and 94 degrees Celsius. An iron nail placed in the hot spring would be reduced to rust in just nine days. But do not worry, the centuries-old yumomi method of cooling the water makes it perfectly safe for everyone to enjoy, and the accompanying ceremony is now a local attraction, with regular demonstrations enlivened by folk songs.
The rich mineral content of Kusatsu’s waters have become known for their metabolism-boosting effects and as a natural way to promote more beautiful skin. The hot springs are also said to be beneficial for a variety of conditions, including muscle pain, bruises and sprains, fatigue recovery and more. Said to cure basically everything except lovesickness, you are bathing in good company—even the leaders of the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period (1603–1867) ordered barrels of hot spring water to be delivered to Edo Castle.

Nice little wood for a stroll. All the beech trees were planted after the war so are approximately the same size and well-spaced. This has led to this place getting its name. There is a pond with a bridge over it where photographers try to get photos of the trees reflected in the water. The different views of the forest during the four seasons are also interesting. The snowshoe walk in winter, run by some of the locals is supposed to be especially pretty. At that time the buildings in the car park are only visible by the roofs sticking up through the snow.

The Snow Monkey Park, also known as Jigokudani Yaen Koen, is a secluded park where visitors can get an up-close view of snow monkeys. However, a recent report describes the experience as disappointing. Despite this, there are still recommendations for making the most out of your visit if you decide to go anyway. Alternatively, Kenruko-en Garden in Kanazawa offers a peaceful and visually stunning alternative destination while visiting Japan.
Free parking is available for the monkey park. It’s about a 30 minute flat walk to the entryway that is not paved. I would recommend shoes for hiking. Although it was a Saturday when we visited, we arrived at 8:30 and entered at 9:00 when the park opened. We had the place to ourselves for about 45 minutes undisturbed. At the time, only two monkeys were inside the onsen however many monkeys were around or near the water. The monkeys themselves are not aggressive and left you alone without incident. I rather enjoyed watching the babies play and the mothers cling to the babies for protection. Overall, I am happy to see the snow monkeys relatively crowd free.
Annie Sobol — Google review
The hike up to the monkeys was very beautiful! And the snow monkeys are definitely worth the visit! The pool they are in is much smaller than expected but nonetheless enjoyed the experience. Just a tip, the path in winter is slippery at the beginning, so I would recommend bringing shoes with good grip and spikes. We had flat shoes and after we made it up the first steps, we were fine the rest of the way. But would've definitely felt safer with some more snow-suited boots!

Amazing experience being up close with the Snow Monkeys (which are actually Japanese Macaques). They are indifferent to human presence so you will have no trouble going up to them to take pictures, though the guideline is to stay at least 1 meter away to respect their space. It's a little surreal, almost like humans are invisible. There's a 20 to 30 minutes trek up to the park on foot, so traveling light is best if visiting. If you're staying at the hotels nearby, ask the reception about the park and they might give you discount coupons which makes the park admission tickets cheaper.
Wong Yi — Google review
To reach the Snow Monkey Park, you'll need to walk around 1.6km. In winter, ensure you wear waterproof hiking or trekking shoes. While the park isn't large, the scenery is breathtaking, and you can watch the snow monkeys enjoying a hot spring. Remember not to bring food inside, follow the rules, and avoid disturbing the wild monkeys. There are no restaurants within or near the park; they're only available near the parking lot, so please plan accordingly.

A bit far from everything else. The walk to the monkey park is about 20 minutes and along a beautiful path surrounded by trees. Admission tickets are 800 yen for adults. I have heard about this like most people so decided to take a tour to see the Snow Monkeys. It’s about 3 1/2 hours from Tokyo Shinjuku. Once we got there there is a little bit of a walk to get to the monkeys. ( 1 mile each way from the entrance) It’s about a 20 minute walk but be careful as there was a lot of ice and snow. When you see the geyser ( which is pretty interesting in itself) you are almost there. A few more steps up. There wasn’t a lot of snow but lots of monkeys. A few were in the water but it was really nice to finally be able to see them. You have to go at least once.

Definitely worth a visit amidst the touristy feel. It’s been warm the last few days, hence not icy and more like muddy. But safer to walk, did not need spikes. We were lucky to have a few of them, especially the grandfather (last photo) in the on a warm day. On the way down don’t forget to stop by at Enza Cafe for their homemade apple pie…. Simply awesome…

This is a really well run and maintained park. The monkeys are amazingly docile because of the complete lack of interaction with humans over the years.
In winter, they bathe a lot in the pool constructed for them which is very cute. You can get very close so there's lots of opportunities for great pictures.
It's a long cold walk, but the path up the mountain is well maintained. It's well worth it! You don't often get the opportunity to see nature this up close and personal. They close at 4PM so don't start your walk too late!

A bucket list destination if you have the opportunity while visiting Japan. You can easily get lost in nature and most of the visuals make you feel like you working for national geographic. The walk to the park from the bus stop was about 40 minutes. We went in early January and the weather was beautiful. It costs ¥800 for adults to enter but it was worth every yenny. I highly recommend visiting this park as it's a once in a lifetime experience.

We visited despite the weather being really rainy and we are so glad we did!
The way up, despite the poor weather, was no problem since it was very well maintained. The path up is easy to traverse. We were also pleased with the little shop and the facilities.
You can get really close to the animals and if you follow the guidelines, you are absolutely safe. Experiencing the monkeys up close really is something special.
The animals are not caged and can leave if they want to.

Wow!!!! Definitely worth a visit, even coming to the area just for this experience. There are so many monkeys once you reach the onsen, they bathe there, have little fights, play - it was lovely to watch them. We were lucky enough to see a lot of baby monkeys as well (march-may I think is a good time to go). The weather wasn't perfect but there were still a lot of monkeys for all the visitors to see. 800 yen is also a fair price. The 'hike' there is very easy, also with kids or even a wheelchair. There are restrooms next to the park.

It was nice to visit. Make sure you have good boots for a muddy trail. More interesting in the colder months definitely because the monkeys won’t bath when it’s warm. The walk to the park is really nice and has only a couple of steep parts, so it’s really easy. Watching the monkeys go about their business is really adorable. The entrance fee was 800 JPY in 2023, which I found a bit high for what you get. If I visited again, I would come in the winter/early spring.

The pool with the monkeys is great once you get there. Probably spent half an hour and then had to do the 1 hour walk back.
Maybe it's better without snow. But then again: your coming to see the snow monkeys.

You MUST do this!!! This was a once in a lifetime experience. It is a large hike up a steep street. Then you go up some steps. At the top it flattens out. You the have a long but fairly flat and very muddy walk along a trail. At the end of the trail there is a flight of extremely steep steps. At the top it flattens out again and you walk up a concreted slope to a hut. On the other side of the hut is the monkey park! It is amazing!!! You need good knees to do this and you must be sturdy on your feet. It is ok to go slow! Well worth the effort for the incredible experience!!!

We went in middle of March . Didn’t expect the snow fall and it was magical experience indeed. Then you see the cute snow monkeys relaxing in the hot spring. What a perfect moment.! You can check online to see if the snow monkeys are there. They have live broadcasting website to confirm sightings. Highly recommended

Winter January 2024
Walking up the snowy track was breathtaking. Amazing view and many beautiful scenery for photo shooting. It's 1.8km one way and takes about 45 minutes. However, give it extra for taking photos.
Once you've reached the top, the village is spectacular, and every step you've climbed is worth it.
The monkeys are friendly. However, do not carry food or drink as the smell or aroma may attract them. There'll be T&C at the ticket counter for patrons to take cautions when visiting.
I would recommend this place to visit, especially when you've not seen monkeys in hot spas before. And definitely the view and scenery.

Please do not visit this place. If you truly care about animals, avoid visiting the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. It is a tourist trap that is really affecting their habitat. They cannot be called wild if staff members feed them, making them fight for food just to keep them around to please tourists who want a good photo, they cannot be called wild if we cared about a good photo + tourism more than conservation, and they cannot be called wild by having hundred of cameras in front of them every second for 7 hours day by day… that’s is so sad and I truly regret my visit, it was not was I was expecting. I hope people start thinking it twice and making a good research about this place before visiting, I thought I did but in fact, I was wrong.
Eliana Vanegas — Google review
Visit the place when the snow started to melt. Be prepare to walk over the muddy path that takes about 20-25 min walk to reach the ticket entrance. Definitely worth the visit to see how the monkey enjoy the hot onsen. Admission - 800Yen . Parking fee - Free

This is a very popular tourist attraction year round. We got there by bus just like most of the other people. It's roughly a 40 minute walk from the bus stop to the snow monkeys park. Part of the trail can be muddy and slippery due to rain or snow, so wear appropriate footwear as suggested by the other reviewers. Luckily the trail is mostly flat, we made it there without much difficulty even in the snow.
It's definitely worth the walk. We saw plenty of monkeys inside the park. Most of them were soaking or just hanging around the hot spring. The others were cuddling or running around the riversides. It got a little bit crowded around the hot spring, but there was enough room for everyone to get a good view and shots of the monkeys.

We loved this place. We went there during the winter in January and were afraid that there would be too many tourists but it was alright. You have a small hike from the parking of 20-25min and just this is already really nice to do. Beautiful views in a snowy forest. There were so many monkeys it was impressive. It’s really magical with those hot onsen and all the monkeys walking around. Be careful and don’t touch them though ! Vibes are immaculate

Two Lover's Point is a picturesque location situated on a cliff by the Sea of Japan. It is a popular spot for couples to hang love plates, ring bells, and admire the stunning sunset views. This romantic destination offers heart-shaped tags where lovers can make wishes and place them anywhere they desire. The area is adorned with beautiful blue waters that enhance its charm as an ideal location for couples seeking an intimate getaway.

Most of the lovers in Joetsu and Kashiwazaki have probably been to this cape. I took my dog there for the first time in about 20 years, and there was a nice seasonal breeze. There were just families and group travelers.
The bell of the cape is the main attraction, but there is also a walking road, so it is very pleasant to walk for a while. The trees are rustling in the sea breeze from spring to summer.
However, a walk on a rough sea day is just training. It's important to be able to laugh with each other because the atmosphere might get worse in the car on the way home.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort is a winter sports destination that offers skiing and snowboarding opportunities, equipment rentals, on-mountain dining options, and a bustling village. This resort is ideal for beginners as it provides an environment that is friendly to new skiers. Hiromi from Snow Crystal Yoga and Wellness can assist in arranging everything needed for your trip, including ski passes and lessons. The resort also boasts some unique experiences like having dogs on the slopes!
It's a really great getaway from Tokyo. This place has so many spots to go and is super close to all the things you need. The ticket and rental is not too bad either. Unfortunately, we came in late March so the snow is kinda melting already

Great ski resort, easily accessible from Tokyo (shinkansen and then express bus). The slopes are great and the town itself is very quaint with tons of onsens and great restaurants. No problem if you speak no Japanese either. Only real complaint is that some of the connectivity between lifts is a bit weird. There are a number of "connector" lifts to help get you over little ridges so sometimes instead of just skiing down to the lift you want, you have to skate for a bit and take another short lift. Also, wouldn't necessarily recommend this place for total beginners since there's not a lot of ways for beginners get off the top of the mountain. (There *are* ways though so it's not a deal breaker). Terrain park options are also a bit slim. Overall though, I'd still highly recommend this resort.
Michael Mauer — Google review
A great resort with plenty of runs and good off piste parts. Great POW when it snows , highly recommend for a traditional town who plenty of local Japanese attributes, cheap lift pass as well.
Only a handful of restaurants actually on the mountain, but more on the bottom , with fair prices for food and drink.

Love the snow and slopes at nozawa onsen! Thick and fluffy snow, with plenty of long and wide green slopes. Which are good for beginners. Still preserved well to keep local tourist and business active. They’ve multiple stations and beginner slopes for both ski n snowboarding. Highly recommended!

Great resort, plenty of runs that will takes days and days to explore. A really cool village vibe. The mountain is 1650m so plenty of vertical to snowboard and at the half way point of the mountain plenty of mild blue runs for the family. Great cat trail runs from the top that keep you entertainedand challenged as to how fast you can decend, Skyline is an amazing long run to the bottom. You won't be disappointed!

20 April 2023: Had a great skiing day! To give some info: I was afraid that the snow would be totally gone, however as of 20 April the higher slopes are still available. These are 2 lifts and around 5 slopes which 4 are of medium difficulty and 1 a bit harder. Good fun for 3 hours. Price info: full day skiing around 4.800 yen, 4 hours pass: 4.200 yen, ski rental just infront of the lift has ski gear and shoes for 2.800 yen for half a day. Next time I come back before April so all the slopes are open:) I came for a day from Tokyo by train and bus. Cheers!

The Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort is one of the largest snow resorts in Japan. It has the longest ski slope 11km in Japan.
I often visit by car and park at the Park 1, which is next to the longest gondola lift, for 1,000 yen for the weekend. It seems the Park 2 and 3 are always free, these parks are a bit far away but one or more free buses are available from the parks to the gondola.
The area is very large and the slopes are wide and so long, so you can ski with your children without any worries. However, there is a lot of walking and climbing around lift stations and at the connections between the slopes and or areas. When I visit with my children, I wonder whether we are skiing or walking.
Please note if visiting with a pre-school child. The child is not issued a ticket as they are free to ride the lift, so the child has to go through the gate with a parent or a companion, but once holding up the ticket, the time between the gate opening and closing again is very short. Therefore, I met several times that only the child went through the gate and I could not. There were no staff around the gate and it was very difficult. Improvements requested.
The snow resort is really huge and one day is not enough to enjoy. Nozawa village also has great hot springs, I want to revisit here for a longer stay to enjoy the whole resort.

Small village/town with a lot of tourists who come for the ski resort. There's a lot of local restaurants a short walk from the ski resort and the snow was really powdery and soft during January. Although there has been a lack of snow which didn't seem like an issue to me since the snow in Australia set a very low standard

The Ueda Castle Ninomaru ruin, which dates back to 1583, has been reconstructed atop a hill. The site includes two Shinto shrines and a museum that showcases the area's local history. Despite being relatively small in size, the place is quite pleasant. Although I did not have the opportunity to explore the castle itself, I was impressed by the abundance of flowers in the surrounding park and a delightful traditional event taking place nearby.
Huge park with museums, a shrine, and much more. You can spend so much time appreciating the history and beauty here. The whole month of April is a cherry blossom festival and it becomes very lively with street food stalls and people.

Really lovely castle with a very rich history of one of the coolest samurai clan in all of Japan, the Sanada clan, famous for their samurai uniform with antlers and red color (you've probably seen in movies). Ueda castle also had legendary defense battles against many sieges, the subject of a popular Japanese tv show "sanadamaru". The castle is also featured in other works such as "Summer Wars". While the castle gates aren't as big as Matsumoto castle, I think they are definitely worth visiting if you are in the area..they have amazing armor on display and a rich cultural center and museum nearby.

Came here 4/10/2022 and the sakura were all in full bloom. Depending on the year, the time of the bloom will change so check before you go. There were many food stalls selling your standard Japanese snack foods. I walked around the moat about 3 times just to admire the beautiful sakura trees on both sides.
TIP: In the middle of the moat is this small park that everyone just tends to overlook so it's not that crowded. Bring or buy food from the food stalls and eat it here. If you have a tarp, you can spread it out on the grass. There are also benches you can sit on as well. I climbed up the stairs and got a seat under a gazebo, right in front of a GORGEOUS pink sakura tree.
Highly recommend this place during cherry blossom season. I personally wouldn't plan a trip here off-season though since there's not much of a castle to see (but I'm just not a castle person in the first place...)

Takada Castle is a feudal-era castle located in Japan and features three turrets, surrounded by a moat and park, making it an ideal spot for cherry blossom viewing. This 19th century castle from the Meiji period has two observation decks on the first and second floors that offer stunning views of the surroundings. The entry fee to visit the castle is 300 yen per person while fish feeding can also be enjoyed there.
What a cute little castle! According to the brochure, this castle lacks some features common to other castles because it was constructed in a rush due to an impending attack. It's fascinating to see what they pulled off in only a limited time.

Compared to Niigata Port, there were fewer employees, and it felt lonely, probably because there were fewer passengers.
Additionally, the ships cruising the route between Naoetsu and Ogi seem to be smaller than those between Niigata and Ryotsu, and they are more likely to be canceled if the weather gets bad.

The vessel is the 2,483-ton Koganemaru, which is one size smaller than the huge car ferries that run on the Niigata-Otaru route, and as a result is susceptible to waves and winds. I've seen many people get seasick even when the waves are about 1m high, so if you're prone to motion sickness, you'll need to take motion sickness medication. 平日のせいか閑散としてました。
梅雨時のシーズンオフなのもある? 一泊が条件の特割があるみたいだけど期間限定との事。平日ガラガラな運航なら通年で特割みたいなキャンペーンうってもいいと思う。

(Translated by Google) It functions normally as a ferry terminal.
I used it before the busy season, but it wasn't that crowded, probably because of the coronavirus pandemic.
I was worried because someone said in a review that they had never seen a paid parking lot in operation, so I looked for a private parking lot in advance, but there was none nearby, so it was a do-or-die decision. I headed to the ferry terminal, but it was open as usual.
(It seems that there is a staff member only at the time of arrival and departure of the ferry...)
It's an easy-to-find location right in front of the ferry terminal.
It's 50 yen for 1 hour. Even in the summer, it seems to close at 5:30pm, so please leave your car as soon as the last boat arrives.
The people working at the counter are probably employees, but are the people cleaning Sado Kisen employees as well? Both had a pleasant response.

Kitamuki Kannon temple is a 9th-century Buddhist pilgrimage site that has been reconstructed and features a sacred tree on its forested grounds. The temple, which translates to Kannon Buddha facing north, is accessible via a short street lined with shops and restaurants. It boasts a stunning main hall and serene surroundings away from the hustle and bustle of Ueda city.
No tickets were required to enter. Free temple to look around at. I enjoyed scoping out the place.
Ms. Duchaine “The Nomad” — Google review
A beautiful local spot of a 9th century Buddhist temple. Its name is literally translated as “Kannon Buddha facing the north”.
Upon entering via the gate from the main road, you will walk through a short street lined up with stores and soba restaurants before climbing up a bit to the temple. The grounds are not big but the main hall is quite stunning.
My visit time was 40 minutes. This spot seems quite popular among domestic Japanese visitors, and I saw some come in tours.
Ha Luu — Google review
This is one of the must-visit sights in Bessho Onsen. The temple has a deep and interesting history, modest but well-maintained buildings, ancient trees, and a great view. There's no entrance fee but also no English information. It's not touristy but often full of tourists, so I personally find some other places in the surrounding countryside more impressive.
aaron meldahl — Google review
Serene, pristine, away from hustle bustle of Ueda city. Lush green environment with small ponds having colourful fishes. Good experience away from the city. There are lot of onsens (hot water springs) nearby in walkable distance.

One of our most memorable experiences, we were there in April 2016 , the food was amazing .
Anrakuji is an old Buddhist temple located in a forested area and characterized by an octagonal pagoda and a two-story bell tower. Its entrance is marked by a black gate, surrounded by lush greenery that makes the stroll towards the temple very pleasant. The three-story wooden tower boasts intricate carvings blending perfectly with the natural surroundings of Nagano. This national treasure can be visited for free, but admission to climb up to the tower costs 300 yen.
The one and only Octagonal shape pagoda can be found here, and it's the Anrakuji treasure . You will need to walk up some flight of stairs to the temple and to the pagoda, but it is worth the entrance fees of 300 yen per adult ( to see the pagoda) . Parking is free . Please park here so that you can visit the other two temples nearby .
Choo HengHeng — Google review
Loved this temple from the entrance, featuring the black gate and plenty of greenery alongside the road leading to the temple. It was breezy and cool in the shade, which made the stroll very pleasant.
National treasure with the highlight as a three-story octagonal wooden tower. Intricate and original carvings of the tower were amazing to look at.
The tower blended very well with the lush green and the blue skies of early summer typical of Nagano. I suppose this place must also look splendid in the fall with yellow and red leaves as the backdrop.
My visit time was about 45 mins. Free to enter temple grounds, 300 yen to climb up to the wooden tower.
Ha Luu — Google review

The beautiful octagonal pagoda is worth a visit alone. It’s incredibly complex and an original, too. It’s free to visit the temple and bell tower, 300 yen to walk up through the woods to the pagoda. Quite a few stairs. The staff are super friendly, too!
Kate McCauley — Google review
There is an entrance fee but worth paying to see the rare example of Song Chinese-style Zen architecture of the eight-sided pagoda nestled in the forest. There are many stairs to it, though, which also somewhat cuts down on crowds even though this is another of the must-see places in Bessho Onsen.
aaron meldahl — Google review

Went by rental car. Beautiful traditional Japanese buildings and shrines. Nice tea houses and restaurants so can spend a day here and can get lost so take your time. Lots of hills and stairs. Worth the visit.

Seki Onsen Ski Area is a compact ski resort that's famous for its deep powder snow, steep slopes, and tree runs. It's the ultimate destination for freeriders who crave an adrenaline rush on mean deep powder rides. However, this resort is not recommended for inexperienced riders due to the depth of the snow. Avalanche kits are highly recommended as well, and solo riding is not advisable.
Epic powder heaven.
Not for beginners.
Be ready to hike and self rescue.
Alex Burr — Google review
Indeed great snow here but you'll get bored quickly with only two lifts, and one (the single pizzabox) was closed the day we came... The primary lift only accesses two runs, one groomed and one ungroomed.... Seems there is opportunity for a bit of exploration for backcountry deep powder, so snowboarders seem to love it here. We spent a half-day afternoon as a warm up to full days at the bigger resorts, not a bad option if you arrive around 12:30 and only 3000 yen. There are no crowds here but you could say that about anywhere in Myoko.... Slope-side restaurant was charming.

Seki onsen ski area is privately owned by a very nice and cool family. The runs are mostly in groomed and the food is home cooked style and it is THE BEST ski area lunch I have ever had in Japan!
The onsen is also one not to be missed! The onsen is red in color and the aroma is amazingly calming!
Check them out if you love ungroomed runs!

Super small, only two lifts, one of them is a sketchy one-seater. But a lot of fun on a powder day, lots of tree runs available. So if the snow is good, check this place for a day..

Seki is the true freeriders mountain if you're into powder & I mean deep powder riding then this is the best place to be , in my 32 years of riding this little resort had the best powder I've experienced with pillows and more pillows of pow pow. not for inexperienced rider due to it's deepness , my partner almost drowned here here from too much power, avalanche kits are recommended & riding alone not really suggested. It is a small airport with few flights, but it is good the atmosphere. Toyama-KitoKito-airport. KitoKito mean fresh.

To airport by cheap way , your only choice is local bus depart from Toyama station. In contrast to hard access , there are sufficient facilities and you can buy some local souvenir with no tourist crowd.

海沿いにある風光明媚な素晴らしい駅ですね。この駅周辺の車窓からの景色も素晴らしい、特に日の出は最高に美しい。
The Himi Banya-gai shopping mall is an indoor market that offers a wide variety of seafood, eateries, and sushi. Along with these vendors, the mall also has souvenir shops where one can find some of the best omiyage in Japan. The shop owners are known for their friendly nature and passion for cooking. Outside the mall, there is a foot onsen which provides relaxation while enjoying views of the ocean and Japanese Alps (if visible).
A great place for all kinds of seafood, it’s clean and well organized. You can taste sushi or sashimi at the nearby fish market or restaurants. You can buy souvenirs. Free parking provided and great sea view. There’re a free foot hot spring and it’s great when you’ve drive for a long hour!

Had such an amazing seafood trip here! The place is like an outlet mall of all things seafood! The crabs on retail were cheap and ready to eat and did not disappoint! The surrounding area was also such a treat -bridge overlooking the sea and mountain range..awesome. We walked from Himi Stn for about 20min..and going back called for cab - they speak English yey! Only about 1200 Yen from Himi Banya-gai to Himi station! We were too stuffed to walk back & wanted to catch the scheduled train. So plan your trip here...soooo nice!

Nice souvenir shop with a variety of different foods options. It can get a bit busy but it's worth a stop if you're in the area.

It is ok as a roadside stopover but may not be worth it to be a travel destination.

Amazing fresh local seafood and delicacies. Lots of stores to choose from and souvenirs also available. If you want to experience authentic Japanese seafood at its best, this is a definite go to!

I am absolutely in love with Himi. This place offers one of the best ramen I have ever tried, the shop owner was really friendly and I can see his passion with cooking. There are souvenir shops and honestly I bought some of the best omiyage I've ever tasted here, even though I have visited Japan for more than 10 times already.
When you go outside, there is a foot onsen where you can relax and watch the ocean+Japanese Alps if the weather is right (BRING A TOWEL!!). Unfortunately we weren't able to see the Alps due to fog but I would definitely come back again!!

Hamayaki BBQ is awesome.
You should try squid and sazae here.
It would be nice to visit on sunny day so you can watch scenery from it's parking location. I visited when there is an expo there. It would be good if their store was open.

If you were to be Noto Jima, state-of-art exhibition of glass products worth you a while to pay a visit here for one afternoon. Besides, it only 5-min away from Noto Jima Aquarius...

I visited the place again for the second time and was able to see inside.
It was beautiful and we enjoyed a lot. The displays were selected from various artists and they are really interesting. You will also enjoy the art and architecture outside the museum. The entrance fee is a little expensive hope they lower the price. There is a big rest place and restaurant infront of the museum.

Very interesting glass pieces. Mostly from within Japan, some from Italy and China. 800yen entrance fee. Takes about 30 to walk through reading all description.

This is a very low level museum. It's 800 yen to enter and pictures are not allowed in most of the exhibits. Video completley banned. Very disappointing exhibits with dust everywhere. Needs major upgrades at the price they are charging.
Kevin Sarmiento — Google review
The exterior of the museum is curious architecturally, but it's downhill from there. No English translations anywhere (I know, a bit xenophobic of me to expect...) and more so, the collection it self is small and not particularly beautiful.
