How long is the drive from Chongqing to Nanjing?
The direct drive from Chongqing to Nanjing is 865 mi (1,391 km), and should have a drive time of 15 hrs 43 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Chongqing to Nanjing, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with Wuhan, as well as top places to visit like Tianzi Mountain Tea Plantation and Wu Ling Yuan Feng Jing Ming Sheng Qu, or the ever-popular Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
Wuhan, the bustling capital of Hubei province in Central China, is a city divided by the Yangtze and Han rivers. It boasts numerous lakes and parks, including the beautiful East Lake. The Hubei Provincial Museum nearby showcases artifacts from the Warring States period, such as Marquis Yi of Zeng’s coffin and bronze musical bells from his ancient tomb. Exploring Wuhan is made easy with its many biking paths and bicycle-friendly areas.

Best stops along Chongqing to Nanjing drive
The top stops along the way from Chongqing to Nanjing (with short detours) are Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yellow Crane Tower, and Wu Ling Yuan Feng Jing Ming Sheng Qu. Other popular stops include Dong Lake, Jinghu District, and Xiao Yao Jin Gong Yuan.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a must-see destination for nature lovers. The park features a breathtaking cliff-hanging walkway and glass skywalk, situated at an altitude of 1,400 meters on Tianmen mountain's side. Although the Glass Bridge is not easily accessible, it's worth the trip to experience its stunning beauty. Visitors can take a bus from the bottom of the mountain or drive there independently by car.
Absolute highlight of our trip to China. Although it's all part of the same park, the different regions of the park look different from each other in terms of the landscaping. As others have noted - the signage isn't great. The most helpful thing to keep in mind is there are two "levels" to the park. The ground floor trails, and the top floor trails. And then technically there are trails that connect the ground and top floor. I definitely recommend taking the lifts, it's not worth your precious time and energy to hike up. The main highlights are pretty easy walking, the reason you'll sweat will be because of the heat, not because of the trail difficulty. Food is a little rough - there are several McDonalds on top of the mountains! There are lots of vendors along the trails selling bottled water, snacks, etc. They won't bother you at all, and we bought from them several times. A good amount of restrooms on the trail. I liked the Yuanjiajie Scenic area, Golden Whip Stream, and Yellow Village Scenic Area. I would stay away from Tianzi Scenic area and Yangjiajie scenic area. The trails were more difficult in those sections, and the scenery wasn't as good. You'll have a great time!!

Amazing place !
Used for AVATAR's movie and we understand why.
The beauty of this place is AMAZING.
The park is so huge that you can buy a multi days pass. That I Highly recommand!
There are so many spot to see, you'll even be able to see monkeys.
In this park, you will walk a lot, like all day long just to visit part of it.
There are a lot of stairs, so prepare your legs cause you're gonna be in pain but it's worth it.
Unforgettable memories
Take water as well, it is hot & wet.

A stunning, breathtaking and awe-inspiring place. The inspiration for Pandora in the Avatar movie. An absolute must-see. The best time to see will be in early winter as the place will appear mythical and magical in the mist. The park comprised of dense forests, deep ravines, deep canyons, unusual peaks, caves, and pillar-like rock formations blanketed throughout the park. These pillar rock formations are what the park is renowned for around the world.

Very beautiful, especially when the canyon is full of mist and cloud. Make sure to wear hiking shoes since the floor is very wet and dangerous.

The avatar mountain are worth the visit. If you love nature then it's a must visit.
Remember its not very easy accessible to get to glass Bridge. You'll have to take a bus from the bottom of the mountain. If you have a car it's better.
Pros : Beauty at its best.
Cons : you have to pay for everything and it's a little pricy.

Absolutely incredible. Walking in, you pass between the stone formations towering above you. After a climb (or an expensive elevator) you get to a region of the park with views to this stunning natural phenomenon all around. This park is huge, take more than one day to explore this place. There are lodging options inside the park, even budget friendly ones.

Easy and nice hikes, no need to take cable cars or the elevator. I would recommend to spend at least three full days here to cover the whole area. It's crucial to start in the early morning to escape the tourist masses ;)
If you decided to hike instead of taking the cable cars, you are mostly alone, but the main spots are pretty crowded. You can have equally good views just a bit of the track, so there is no point in waiting in line to get a picture from the spots which are close to the cable car stations.
Orientation is easy, signs are everywhere

Quite amazing landscapes to tour around. Some scenes from the movie Avatar was shoot from here. Take the cable car to look down the breathtaking view. Put your walking shoes on, because it might take you a day to tour whole park.

Well worth a visit if you want to get away from busy cities in China! English/Australian couple touring China, we travelled to Zhangjiajie airport and got a transfer to our accommodation (Purespace) located a short walk to the Zimugang entrance to the National Park. This entrance is quieter than the main South Entrance. Tickets last 4 days from purchase, and buses take you round the park. We found that the buses work in a hop on-hop off fashion (I.e. you can’t stay on one bus all the way round). We recommend taking a photo of the Chinese spelling of the entrance / exit so that you can show park employees (very minimal English is spoken!).
We love the outdoors and hiking, and quickly learnt that you can avoid crowds of local tourists by walking deeper into the park. Our 2 day itinerary we discovered which we loved:
Day 1) From Zimugang gate, get the bus to the Bialong Elevator (don’t even bother taking it - it’s crowded and you have to pay extra!), then hop on the bus back to Golden Whip stream (the stop between Zimugang and Bialong). From here, walk along the stream until you get to a staircase on the right. This is up to Avatar mountain, a long walk but worth it! No tourists, saw lots of wildlife (including monkeys) and amazing views at the top. There are ways (buses/walking) back down but we were funnelled into the elevator which we had to pay for. It wasn’t worth it, crowded and too fast to take in scenery!
Day 2) We got to Zimugang gate at 8:45am - no tourists there! We took the bus to Golden Whip and then hopped on the bus to Ten Mile Gallery. Beautiful scenery (despite the tram running along the path for the first 1.5km!) After then, you walk up the stairs for about 2 hours until you get to a McDonalds (!) at the base of the Tianzi pavilion. We didn’t see a single person on the stairs, it was peaceful and so atmospheric. From the road at the top, we took the bus to the cable car and took that down the mountain which I highly recommend! From there we got the bus back to 10 mile gallery - Golden Whip - Zimugang.
We didn’t do the tourist spots like the Stairway to Heaven (Tianzi mountain), nor the glass bottomed bridge… and we don’t regret it!

Unforgettable experience. This is one of the top 5 national forest park in 🇨🇳. The view of the pillar mountains are magnificent, it is no comparison to any wonders you have seen from this planet. If you ever go to blue mountain in NSW 🇦🇺, it will make blue mountain looks like a dwarf, it's like comparing the 3 sisters ⛰️ to a thousand sisters ⛰️. If you have a chance, be sure to put in your 🪣 list.

Great walks and amazing scenery. Once in the Park you can hike many trails or catch the free buses to navigate the Park. Easy to spend 3 days exploring.
The tickets you buy for about 60$ is valid for 3 days.

Huge complex of mountains where you will have to travel by shuttle buses, cable car, even take a lift high as Eifel Tower :-) The mountains are breathtaking and unforgettable. Thanks to Avatar movies it gets more popular and I think that’s a good thing, otherwise I think we will maybe not have visited this place and it will be a mistake. If you are not sure to come because it’s maybe far, you definitely should come, it’s worthy to travel here. The tickets are for 4 days. We only have 1,5 day and still worthy, worthy, worthy :-)

Wow, this place is magical. The scenery is on another, if you really wanna enjoy this place I recommend not taking cable car and elevator, walk everywhere. The crowds thin out when walking deeper inside. And that's when you can really take it slow and enjoy this place. Because the main spots are way too crowded and you'll get overwhelmed by local tour groups. Also great organisation by the staff to take us to and back from the bus.

This is where Zhuge Liang lived in seclusion for ten years before leaving the mountains, and it is also where Liu Bei visited the thatched cottage three times. Stepping into Longzhong, the first thing that catches your eye is the large stone archway built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. On one side of the archway is engraved a famous line from Du Fu's "The Prime Minister of Shu": Three visits frequently make plans for the world, and two dynasties open up the hearts of veterans. On the back are engraved the five characters "Three Generations Next". In memory of Zhuge Liang, he was praised by later generations as the most outstanding figure after Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties. In the scenic area, there are also "Ten Scenic Spots in Longzhong" built by later generations because of their admiration for Zhuge Liang. If you go to Gurungzhong, it is recommended to watch "Thatched Cottage Theater". This is the first live-action drama performed in the form of thatched cottage in China, including three scenes including "Longzhong Duo", "The Song of the Ugly Wife" and "Red Cliff Ode".

Yellow Crane Tower, a reconstructed 5-story tower standing at 168 feet high, is a revered landmark in Wuhan. Originally built during the Qing dynasty as a military watchtower, the current building was erected in 1981 and has become the pride of the city. The Yellow Crane Tower is the great cultural highlight of Wuhan, and it gets better in the evening when the vast majority of the buildings on the bank of the Yangtze River gifting us with an astonishing light show experience. This tower was destroyed a bunch of times and rebuilt to the point where there is an elevator inside the tower. Nonetheless, it is very aesthetically pleasing. It's a big campus so is room to wander. This was one of the highlights of my trip to Wuhan. Such a historical place and the surrounding park reflecting its rich history.
Be warned, in the humid conditions of late summer, it can be quite an arduous trek and climbing up the tower itself with crowds of people can be challenging. But to reach the fifth floor of the tower is an achievement and the breathtaking views of the city are unforgettable.
Bonus: they sell ice cream in the shape of the tower.

A wonderful place to visit in Wuhan. The tower has been rebuilt many times. Although there is easy access by public transportation, I recommend to take a taxi which is pretty inexpensive. The ticket costs RMB 70, and gives access to the entire area that contains the tower. There is even a collection of different stones and gems in one of the building as well as different pavilions and fountains. On the top of the hill there is a big bell. The tower is equipped with an elevator for the elderly. Recommended.

Hubei Provincial Museum, established in 1953, is a large museum with an impressive collection of around 200,000 historical and cultural artifacts.
All I can say is wow! The overall layout of Hubei Provincial Museum reflects the construction model and characteristics of Chu State (a state in the Spring and Autumn Period (770BC-476BC)). It is amazing to see what kind of technology that they had even before Christ was born. The tomb of Marquis was simply impressive. How well preserved it was as well as all of the artifacts that were buried. He was the 9th emperor of the Han dynasty. There are many photos showing how they excavated the tomb and parts which were completely under water. The majority of the works lost wax technique. It is hard to imagine that they could make such detailed bronze statuary. The museum is split into three parts: the comprehensive exhibition hall, the Chu Culture Exhibition Hall and the Chime Bell Exhibition Hall. The bells were so impressive. There was a small display in a corner where you could simulate the bells tones just by pressing a key on a keyboard. Depending on where the bell was hit was a different tone.
S D — Google review
One of the most disappointing museums I’ve visited. The English descriptions were choppy and didn’t paint a comprehensive narrative of the Chu state. Wikipedia does a better job of summarizing their exhibitions. The audio guide you can rent - I DO NOT RECOMMEND. You pay 30 RMB for it and there’s only about 20 descriptions for items in the entire museum. Although the museum is free to enter, truly you don’t get anything out of the experience.

I was impressed by the park and its lake - although its in the city, area is big and green, you feel yourself relaxed, surraunded by nature, dufferent trees, sculptures, chinees temples, small boads floating in water. You can find many benches, as well as cafes and playgrounds for kids. Dont expect, that you see whole park in 1 day - for that you need to rent a bicycle and be fit :) also you may rent a boat (price is fixed for all of them and depends on the distance) to see spectacular vies from the lake side. The park has differently designed areas, for example, traditional chinees garden, modern sculpture park, west plams trees garden and many others. For me the most exciting was walking down the sidewalk, where water is at the both sides.

Not much to see where besides the super duper mining pit, unless you're an ingress agent. 😅😁😂

(Translated by Google) Iron mine located about sixty kilometers from Wuhan, converted into a national mining park. Impressive for how far it develops downwards, as can be seen from various observation points. The statue of Mao located inside the park is notable (in size). Unfortunately many paths were closed or unusable and many parts of the park definitely needed redevelopment

Tianzhu Shan is a stunning national park with mountainous terrain that resembles Chinese paintings. The hike to the top is challenging and lengthy, but the scenery along the way and at the peak is breathtaking. Although there is another higher peak beyond, some may choose not to continue due to its distance. The foggy mist at the top adds an extra layer of beauty to this picturesque location. Overall, Tianzhu Shan offers unparalleled natural beauty for those willing to take on its trails.
Extremely beautiful mountain national park area that looks just like the Chinese paintings! The hike is pretty long and strenuous and once you’re at the top it turns out there’s another six hours to get to an even higher peak which I didn’t do. The scenery at the top and all the way along the hike is pretty spectacular. I also really liked the cloudy foggy misty feeling at the top.

One notable attraction within Hefei is the Memorial Temple of Lord Bao, dedicated to a revered local figure.
Good sightseeing if you're in Hefei.

20 rmb entrance fee. Some items are listed in English signs.. But most of the highlights are in Chinese. Nice place to visit and drop by for about 30m..since this is one of the few tourist spots in hefei.
Lots of taxis outside on the main road. If you are a non Chinese speaking tourist.. Get the English version of didi. Drivers can easily drop you off here and pick you up.

(Translated by Google) Bao Xiaosu Gong Temple is located in Hefei City, Anhui Province, China. It is the tomb of Bao Zheng, an upright official of the Song Dynasty. Bao Gong's deeds of being an upright and honest official were quite famous in ancient China. They were constantly passed down and translated into the artistic level of dramas or novels. In a period of social turmoil and unclear national politics, the image of an upright official that the people longed for was one of the windows for spiritual sustenance. . The Bao Cemetery (including the graves of related family members near Qi) was robbed during the rule of the Jin people. The descendants of the Bao family collected the remains of their ancestors and buried them elsewhere. The original place was changed to a suspicious tomb. In the 1950s, due to poor conditions, The descendants moved and buried Bao Zheng's remains. In 1973, the local government presided over scientific excavation and re-clearing. During the reconstruction in 1987, some of the remains were reburied back to the current site for future generations to pay tribute to.

(Translated by Google) It turned out to be a paid scenic spot (50 yuan/person), but it was crowded. The most representative Taibai Tower has been desolate and dilapidated in just a few years. It is obviously a restored antique building in the 1950s, but it is so dilapidated that it seems to be a thousand years old.
