Farm Tomita is a large lavender farm located in Furano and is visited by millions of tourists every year. The fields are full of beautiful flowers from mid-May to early October, and the greenhouse has some plants that bloom all year round.
Visited mid-May so the fields weren’t fully filled in, but from what we saw the farm is sure to be beautiful in peak season. Free admission. They have several fields of different flowers to enjoy, an ice cream shop, as well as a souvenir shop filled with a variety of lavender goods. Definitely worth stopping and strolling through the nice flowers!

Reminds me of lavender farms back in England, except far more colourful!
If you are lucky with the weather, it’s absolutely gorgeous to visit. The rows of colourful flowers, combined with the open sky and distant mountains make it a necessary visit if you’re in Hokkaido.
There are a lot of buses bringing tourists in the summer, so be aware it can get busy, but it didn’t feel cramped when I was outside the buildings.
The ice-cream was delicious (I recommend melon and lavender), just make sure you eat it quickly. It melts very fast in the heat. The farm shops are very beautiful and well decorated, and sell all sorts, including dried flowers, perfumes, decorations and food items.
The closest all-year train station is a 20-25 minute walk away, and only 5 minutes by train from Furano. The melon farm next door is also a necessary visit!

Farm Tomita is very famouse for Lavender flowers field! the views of field is seem like paintings !
unfortunately , when we got there, the flowers were starting gone!
but, the flowers field is so huge that we take walk clean and peaceful path!
the air was so so clean and fresh and the path along the low mountain was so peaceful!
oh, the center of farm there are convenient complex shop including souvenirs shop and restaurants and so on!
when we dropped by restaurants for lunch, we were so happy because the shop sells cool drafts beer!! wow!
the tourists don't need to buy the tickets for park! especially tourists whois using own car!
but, to the tourists who is using train, i recommend to buy "packages tickets" including JR tickets & experience old train & tour of Farm Tomita
(when we tour Sapporo, JR Train sells it!)
anyway, we had a good time here!

Beautiful place to enjoy some lavender fields and fresh melon (the best I've ever had)! Lavender is in its peak in June but I went in August and there were still some growing, but also a bunch of other gorgeous flowers. Plus, the melon is the best in August. There were a lot of people there, but everyone got a chance to get their perfect instagram photos, so just take your time and don't rush. It's not a place to rush. Also, I highly recommend taking the scenic train that only runs in the summer! One of the train stops is near this farm.

Was there on 12/6/23
The lavender was in full bloom. Nice place to hang out. We had to do the touristy thing: 1) try the lavender ice cream , melon ( not sweet) but the melon puff was amazing!

Admission is free, and you can enjoy the lavender fields and various flowers.
I visited during Golden Week and wasn't expecting to see lavender, but there was lavender blooming inside the house.
You can see the cherry blossoms, and the Tokachidake mountain range and scenery are also great.
I think you can enjoy it without getting crowded even outside of the lavender blooming season.

Really touristy with buses after buses dropping off at this place. But this place is made for tourists so it has enough amenities to interest anyone. There's a big variety of shops (from dried flower, lavender to melon products) around the farm and beautiful flowers abound. There's also a lovely photography museum, factory production lines as well as various viewpoints (don't miss out on the viewing spot in the lavender factory).
The entire area is nicely maintained and a well curated space with the path amongst the trees a personal highlight for me.

We went there in the peak lavender season in July. The view and management was amazing at this place. I also loved shopping at the nearby shops for perfumes and cosmetics. The smell of lavender was enchanting.

Great experience!
Splendid view of the flowers, we tried the lavender ice cream and I can tell that is my second favorite in the world. The melon is super recommended, I’m not a big fan but this for sure tasted different… good different.

Was very crowded when I went in the afternoon. On the left of the car park were retail shops mainly focusing on melon and ice cream. That's not part of Farm Tomita.
Farm Tomita is right of the car park. Flowers fields were pretty. There were several F&B and souvenir shops across the farm. So don't join the massive crowd in the first ice cream shop at the entrance, there's plenty more inside without the crowd.

He spread the wonders of Hokkaido's lavender fields throughout the country. The flower gardens at Farm Tomita are simply amazing. It looks beautiful from any angle. In addition, you can see lavender in the greenhouse all year round, regardless of the season. There are some such sad performances. All the food and drinks are very sophisticated and delicious. The customer service is also excellent.

This place has many different plots of flowering plants in all hues and colors and was indeed a warming sight for our tired eyes. We enjoyed ourselves wandering around the different fields, having a great time taking many pics for remembrance. The tractor and motorcycle in this place are all lavender in color! There is a small cafe where we enjoyed the sweet melon (we couldn't enjoy it elsewhere as all the melon farms have already closed up for the remaining months of the year (we visited furano in 2nd week of oct) and also different versions of the lavender ice cream. Multiple shops are located all over the huge estate for you to purchase different types of lavender goods and souvenirs if you wish. Toilet facilities are readily available as well too.

Entry was free.

A must visit place in Furano. Visited at the end of June, Lavender is just beginning to bloom. Even at this stage, it's beautiful. Some types of flowers have yet to bloom so if you come in mid July it would be spectacular.
There are many souvenirs related to lavender. There is soap, perfume, dry lavender flowers, essential oil...etc. Tax free is available for foreigners.
Must try the fragrant lavender and melon Ice cream. And also the melon pan and fresh cut melon.
So come early as it gets very crowded as the day progresses.

This place is like magic. So beautiful the Lavender garden. Full of colours. All kind of colours of Lavender. Not a very large garden but good enough to view the famous Hokkaido Lavender.
The surrounding also have lots of stores selling Lavender products and Lavender made food. They also have the famous Hokkaido Melon. Parking is very big and clean. Great place to visit. Will be back

We booked a Klook tour to go here and it was the best decision ever! Even tho it was drizzling that day but we still enjoy ourselves very much.
You do not have to pay to enter, it's free then along the fields there are cafes and shops that sell a wide range of lavender related products.
The scenery is stunning really worth it to make a trip there, we tried the best selling melon bun but it's too sweet for our liking.
Best to rent a car and drive there or go on a tour like us.

Visited Farm Tomita yesterday to see the lavender fields and plants. Pretty nice fields, though be warned many tourists come here with buses so it’s quite crowded.
There’s many shops that sells lavender ice cream, lavender cream puff, mangoes, mango puff. There’s also shops selling lavender perfume and lavender items. Feel free to spend your money there

It is a humble down market place but clean and decent.
I like the free drinks (coffee, soup, soda, etc) service and the bread breakfast was simple but nice enough.

When i saw the comment on google map, i have already booked the hotel. The electricity will break down if you use 3 types of electric appliances including air-con, tv and hair dryer. the room charges ~hkd640 includ. tax but not worth. The room is on 3rd floor and the street light is just near your window. Even you can touch the street light if your arms are long enough. quite disturbing at night.

The vast flower garden of Shikisai No Oka is a top tourist attraction in Biei. The hilltop gardens are a beautiful sight all year round, with colorful blossoms in summer and winter. There is also an alpaca farm on site, making it a great place to visit if you're interested in these friendly animals.
Beautiful park with super nice staff!
Even tough it was raining a lot on the day we visited, we still enjoyed!
There is also a cute Alpaca farm that you can visit for extra 500¥! Be careful with their spit 🤣

I went and visited in the middle of December with the tour. They will ask and reserve the snowmobile for us in advance.
Single riding 1 hour charged at ¥12,000. Double riding 1 hour charged at ¥18,000.
The price are also included helmet, boots and pants but no gloves and coat so wear and dress your proper clothes or bring the thin balaclava protect your face and neck from the cold during your ride.
Local guide ride very slow and safety. All rider are ride one by one. Wonderful experience ride through the natural surroundings
It’s cheaper price if compared with other countries as Iceland or Finland that I rode the snowmobile.
For family with child, they have the area for sledding board.

Went on 12/6/23. The flowers not in full bloom yet. Nevertheless we took the tram about $20 for 3 pax. It included the alpaca and the tour using tram. The alpacas are so cute! The flowers are lovely.
I would recommend this. From Singapore

The only park that charged for entry. The biggest I visited in my trip. Offered different varieties of flowers in neat rows over few hill slopes. I thought it was over-rated.
Other smaller farms were as pretty.

Alpacas are very cute and friendly
Not many people as I went in April
Free entrance from Oct to April for the farm, to visit the Alpaca farm however you need to pay 500yen per person

Tourist trap. 500 yen parking, 500 yen entrance, 500 yen to see the alpacas. Yes, it's really beautiful on a sunny day, but I found it so artificial. For the lazy there are tractors and gasoline buggies.
I walked around the whole place and I was done in 30 mins including photos. I thought it wasn't worth the money. There are beautiful places in Biei that are completely free to take photos.
Diarmaid Lindsay — Google review
Wonderful spring/summer experience for all, family centered, can hire golf arts, tractor buggy and walk through these stunning fields of flowers. I will also reccomend trying the mouthwatering soft serve milk or lavender icecream, famous in this region. Eating this while strolling through these flower fields for a unique sensual experience. The views beyond Shikisai are exceptional to make the most beautiful photographs, a great Instagram spot for those that indulge in social media. Enjoy.

Spectacular row of flowers, great for photo taking. Parking was 500 yen but the actual entry fee was waived because we came in June, right before the peak season.

The flowers weren’t in full bloom yet when we were there. There are options to rent a buggy (if you have a driver’s license recognises in Japan) or riding a trolley pulled by a tractor. The space is fairly large, with some uphill along the way. Pay extra to feed alpacas. Helicopter also available (but pricey). The tractor ride stopped on the uphill to allow pictures overlooking the flower hills, which would have been breathtaking if all the flowers were in full bloom.
E Chong — Google review
Beautiful to see long stretches of flower fields. Flowers are seasonal so you will find sections which are totally in bloom and some sections just being planted. There is an Alpaca farm inside, do watch out for it, they do have a small ATV and also an option for a helicopter ride :) Had a great experience overall!

Came during an off peak season where entrance fee was free for all visitors
1. You could just stroll yourself around the area and it's really quite chill.
2.Will be tough for elderly to get around as it's all loose gravel and slightly steep. However for the most folks shouldn't be a problem
3. They still keep a decent amount of flowers for the visitors during off peak - not too bad

Worth dropping by, although on a good day, it could get really hot. Also it's open across all 4 seasons, so the effort that goes into maintaining this place is massive.

Colorful and picturesque blooming flower fields that stretch on top of rolling hills slopes.
The area is vast and walkable, there are options to rent self driven golf carts or join a tour.
Parking and entrance each cost 500 yen and can be paid at the machines.
There is a souvenir shop, a small coffee shop and toilets.
There is also an alpaca farm, which costs extra, next to the entrance.

I visited here because of a day tour package. You can enjoy snowbiking during winter. They will provide a safety set, including a helmet for your safety.
If you aren't a fan of snowbiking, you can go for snow sliding, and equipment rental is 200 yen. It is good for family activities.
We enjoyed our time here; it is scenic, surrounded by mountains, and you can have a photo session here as well.
Besides, there are kiosks selling baked potatoes with butter, which are a must-try food here as Hokkaido is famous for its potatoes.
We tried the regular potato, which cost 200 yen, and it tasted good.

We went at the end of September but there were still a lot of fall flowers. We were worried that there wouldn't be anything to see, so it was very impressive how they meticulously plan for flowers to bloom for as long as they can.
Highly recommended.

Truly magnificent and baffling scenery. Went on a sunny day in October. During October there's free admission. You can rent a bike right next to Biei station. You can also rent a quad bike and golf cart to travel around the fields faster.

There are also enclosures for puppies and alpaca.

Asahikawa Ramen Village is a popular ramen restaurant with locations throughout the city. The restaurants specializes in shoyu soy sauce broth and thin, wavy noodles. There's even a location inside Asahikawa Station.
This place has a collection of ramen places, each with a different speciality. We tried a traditional ramen and also one with a silky fowl base. Some places offer half bowls so you can try a few bowls at different shops.

8 ramen restaurant, pictures and prices up outside each place. It would have been good to distinguish each joint so they had their own reviews. Lots of places do half bowl ramen however prices were not far off a full bowl. The place we went into, I wouldn't recommend. The vegetable ramen had mince through it. My Asahikawa soy ramen just wasn't that great. We didn't finish our food, the cheese gyoza was really awful (mixed mince and some strange cheese, I thought it was cheese only). It was also quite expensive for the quality.

There are 8 ramen restaurants in this building complex. In order to let customers taste more than one ramen, the restaurants offer mini size (~ 3/4 or 1/2 of the normal portion) of their signature ramen. We tried 3 ramen restaurants at one go. They all at quite high quality.

Fun little ramen place but you can also get similar ones in town. A good trip if you went to the sake museum before (or after) as it’s in the same part of town. The ramen wasn’t particularly better or more unique to others you can find close to the station.

It was a nice experience and I was really full after trying 3 shops of ramen. However, I think is better to only try these two 青叶 and 梅光轩(rated as one Michelin star). Personally I don’t really like the shoyu based ramen but it is a must to try for tourist.

Too many tourists, including us. We decided to go to the one without waiting lines outside. But, the line quickly formed right after we were seated. Ramens were good, but they were too salty for my kid. I wonder if this was a common trouble to others with kids.

Went after 5pm and it is already closed. Hence we ate at one of the Ramen restaurants. Ensure you got cash as card is not accepted. Ramen was interestingly savoury and the soup base was aromatic. Also ordered Gyoza which was not fantastic just normal. This is all based on foreigner perspective

One tummy one meal. Only managed to try one Ramen shop there.
That shop is meant to be highest google review ratings based on restaurants in the village.
Abit of research indicated that Asahikawa is famous for their shoyu based broth.
Disappointingly, the ramen taste was abit underwhelming. A well known place with a name called Ramen village should have ramen with exceptionally standing out characteristics and quality. I found the ramen pretty standard.

The zoo is a popular tourist destination in Asahikawa, Hokkaido due to its large variety of animals, including polar bears and penguins.

I have been to many popular zoos across different countries and there is something very interesting about this zoo which I rated 5-star. Perhaps the entrance and the overall layout of the zoo might not seem appealing but there are animals here that are worth seeing!
Opened in 1967, the highlight of the zoo is the very adorable huge penguins. There were so many of them and it was such a great experience to be able to see them up close. There were other interesting animals in the zoo such as the seals, polar bear, the underwater hippopotamus, and many more!
I strongly recommend paying a visit to this zoo despite some not-so-good reviews about the zoo.

I entered at the same time as the opening on Saturday, so I was able to see the polar bears, seals, and penguins at a time when they were not hungry. It got crowded after 10:00. The polar bear mumbling time was 15 minutes before the start, but I thought it would be easier, but the deadline was 15 minutes before. It would have been better to line up 30 minutes before. I slipped in. Also, even from outside, it seemed like I could see Mogu Mogu Time, so there was a lot of cheering.
Souvenirs, the items sold are quite different at each store, so if you find a souvenir you like, it would be better to buy it there. Is there a difference in management? Please note that there are shops that can be used with discount coupons for souvenirs and shops that cannot be used.

Asahiyama Zoo in Hokkaido is undoubtedly a standout among zoological parks. Its reputation precedes it, celebrated for its vast expanse and unwavering commitment to cleanliness. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a plethora of well-fed animals, their care evident in their vibrant health and contentment.
Having had the pleasure of visiting twice with my family, I can attest to the zoo's ability to captivate visitors time and time again. Each visit unveils new insights and experiences, making it a truly enriching outing for all ages.
Among the myriad attractions, the penguin march and the polar bear museum stand out as crowd favorites, offering delightful spectacles and educational opportunities. However, amidst all the wonders, my heart remains with the endearing red pandas, their playful antics never failing to bring joy to my visits.
Asahiyama Zoo is not merely a place to observe animals; it is a sanctuary of learning, entertainment, and appreciation for the natural world. Its combination of impeccable facilities, diverse exhibits, and charming inhabitants make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Hokkaido.

We were at Asahiyama Zoo in December 2019, just before COVID-19 hit. It was a magical place for me. I have been to many zoo's before but this place was my favourite. All the animals were amazing, and didn't give me the feeling that they were depressed or trapped. The day we went was a bit warm for the penguins so they couldnt be out to be closer to us. We would come back here one day with our young son.

One of the best zoos I've ever visited. We (2 adults) had a great time walking around the exhibits during January winter even though it was quite cold. Most of the exhibits had an indoor area which offered a brief respite from the cold. Parking was easy and the grounds staff maintained the pathways well. We went on a Monday morning and it was quiet with no wait to buy tickets.
The zoo has some unique animals including polar bears, red pandas, snowy owl, arctic fox, snow leopard, lion cubs, wolves, reindeer, and our favourite, the Pallas' cat! We managed to see a few feeding times (signs with times at the exhibit) and without understanding Japanese they were still entertaining for us.

This was my 5th visit, but the temperature in Asahikawa was over 35 degrees, so I was really tired this time. The animals are exhausted, probably because of the heat. Maybe it's just my imagination, but I feel like the number of cages with nothing on display has increased. However, it does not change much that it is a zoo where you can see the original movement of animals. Facilities where you can eat in the park are cheap and there are many delicious meals, so we recommend eating inside the park.

Had such an amazing time exploring the Asahiyama Zoo. My wife and I decided to go on a Thursday to avoid the weekend crowds, which seemed to work out pretty well. We also ordered tickets online beforehand to avoid the hassle of the line when we arrived. We arrived by public transportation (40 min bus ride from the Asahikawa Station) and arrived 20 minutes before the zoo opened and there were already some people in line (around 20 people), so be sure to get there early. When the park opened at 9:30, some of the people were running to the different exhibits and we were confused why until we looked at the website. They have a feeding schedule for the different animals, so be sure to check that out before arriving so you can maximize your time and have an efficient route through the park. We ended up going back to some of the enclosures multiple times to see the feeding because we did not plan our route ahead of time (we didn’t mind though). In my opinion, the best feedings to check out were the penguins and the polar bears. We were able to get a spot near the front of the enclosure for the penguin feeding and got great pictures, but be sure to line up 15 mins early for the polar bear feeding, as the enclosure doesn’t have as open of a layout and people cram into the viewing area. It was amazing watching the polar bears jump off the rocks into the water to get the food. We also watched the red panda feeding which was a bit less exciting. The zoo keeper spread out apple slices throughout the enclosure and the red pandas had to work to get into some of the feeding balls to get the yummy reward. They were so adorable though, so we enjoyed that one a good bit too. Some of the enclosures really allow you to get up close to the animals without interfering with their daily activities and allow for some amazing camera angles. Overall we spent 4 hours in the zoo and we could have been there even longer. Definitely check this zoo out if you are in Hokkaido, it is worth the trip. Do note that there are a lot of tiny flies flying around in the air though and that seemed to bother a lot of people (we visited on November 2nd, might not be as many bugs during different times of the year).

It was a winter trip to the zoo, hoping to experience the Penguin walk but sadly the event was closed. But we did see the penguins up close and it goes the same for other animals.
Please be prepared as they weather gets really cold. So gloves, heatpacks, scarfs/mufflers are a must!! Lots of snow and ice on the grounds so do walk slowly and when it got too cold, we escaped into any of the animal enclosures or washrooms for some warmth from heaters.
Not all animals are out during winter but was enough to spend 2 - 3 hours just watching them and taking photos/video.
Driving there was easy as there were signs leading to the zoo with traffic ushers for the parking. Tickets were easily bought at counter. Many vending machines with hot drinks/canned soups. There was also a cafe and restaurant. Gift shop sold cute items and biscuits/snacks with pretty zoo themed packaging.
We enjoyed ourselves especially at the penguin and fierce animal enclosures. We are considering to return in spring or summer!

It is really worth to go there. The ticket is only 1000yen. And I had so many kind of animal and insects to see. Because the zoo located in Hokkaido there are some special animals which can survive in cold weather. 🦭🐻❄️🐺
Moreover what I was interested in was infos on board which was made by university students and zookeepers. Those info was really unique that only people who take face animals everyday can write and not only good things which media show but also sad things such as die.
I couldn’t see people read the boards but I recommend you to read those boards it will bring you to understand about life deeply. Half of infos were translated in English.

One of the highlights of our trip! They have a few “up close and personal” displays where you get a really clear view of the animals. Polar bear exhibit and the penguin walk were some of our favorites. There were 3 adorable lion cubs when we visited in Dec 2022 too. There’s a huge variety of Hokkaido animals too - was nice watching them during the winter. Definitely worth a special trip here.

A well rated and educational zoo that is worth a visit. It has unique animals like red panda, polar bear, wolves (though we didn’t get to see it), fox , penguins etc. The zoo made an effort to write the stories/notes about the animals in english as well.
Kids enjoyed their day in the zoo and able to see the animals up close. Able to cover it in less than half a day.

Though being not too big the zoo does provide interesting enclosures and how they display the animals for visitors. The penguin, seal & polar bear exhibits was memorable.
The foods are reasonably priced and we’re happy to see that there are numerous animals for us to see.

It was the Asahiyama Zoo after a long time after the end of Corona. I entered the zoo at night around 6:00. I was able to enter smoothly and it was still bright, so I was able to see a lot of animals and had a very cute and fun time. There are many food stalls and places to eat, so even if you are hungry, you can take a break.
It was wonderful to hear the howling of the wolves.

Nice park/ zoo with plenty of things for everyone to enjoy.
Variety of animals to see, things for the kids to enjoy, and plenty of food/ refreshment places to recharge and treat yourself to.😋
Easy getting to this place by car and parking (opposite to the zoo entrance, which is quite large) is free.
Reasonably priced to enter (sorry, I can't remember but it was reasonable)
We enjoyed our time here and it was a great day. 👍

The zoo is very well kept and maintained. They took care of the animals very well, you can see from the climbing facilities they have for the monkeys.
All signs are hand drawn and handmade. Very cute and I am entertained just from all the amusing signs they put around the zoo. The animals have shining fur and very well fed.
They certainly put their whole heart into this zoo. 💛

I've been to many zoos, and so far this is the best I've ever seen. Very well loved animals that have good enrichment, clean exhibits, and seem happy. Every animal we came across was active. The design and flow of the zoo is excellent, making it easy to navigate and reducing clusters so everyone can see. There are plenty of drink machines available in addition to the restaurants - all very reasonably priced. We spent 6 hours here and would have happily spent more were they not closing!

If I could give it a zero… I would.
Not enough room for the animals in their enclosures. Polar bears looked stressed and only had a very small piece of land to walk backwards and forwards in.
The brown bear was also in a tiny enclosure. Very sad and felt sick that I had paid to get in this jail cell for animals.
The two hippos I saw had only concrete for their land. Their water was frozen over.
The chimps were literally in a small room jail cell, looked sickening. I didn’t take photos because I felt sick at seeing this and didn’t stay long.
The baby brown bear, stressed in the smallest concrete room I’ve seen for an animal.
The giraffes were in a small outdoor enclosure shivering away as it’s snowing and I don’t think they are meant to be a snowy winter animal… (please educate me if I’m wrong).
These animals may have been in a concert jail cell because of the winter weather maybe? I hope it’s not for long as that would be an incredibly sad life for them.
Again, I didn’t take many photos because I felt terrible for being there and didn’t stay long.
But.. at least the penguins and smaller animals seemed to be doing alright.

A small zoo with the penguin walk being a major highlight. If you take the bus from JR Station, recommend taking the 930 one or earlier cause the lines are so long waiting for the bus, you might not make it to the first bus if you are aiming for the 11am parade. Buy your ticket ahead of time in the building ! The returning bus is not as frequent.
it is hard to get a view as people all start to line up for it.
The zoo has some slippery areas and coin lockers.

The zoo is very cold in the morning, especially when you wait outside and line up for the opening. Highlight of the zoo is the popular penguin walk that happens at 11:30am and 2:00pm. Fun to watch the penguins as they walk. There are vending machines and cafes inside. If you smoke, there are designated smoking areas. Can be accessed by direct bus from Asahikawa station. Tickets can be bought same day before entering, 1000 yen for adults.

My family had limited time visiting the zoo.
Arrived at around 1:30pm only had 2 hours to explore as the zoo closes at 3:30pm.
It was worth it. Love the famous penguin walk. They are just adorable.
Visiting during winter while it was snowing makes the scenery more special.
The red panda is cute as well.
Entry fee is reasonable. Adult 1000 yen. My kids 7 and 9 at the time were granted free admission.

If you're coming from a country without four seasons like me, this is the zoo that you must visit. I feel so good when visiting a zoo during winter, where everything is covered with white snow.
The penguin walking show starts at 11 am sharp, with visitors queuing and standing on both sides of the walkway while the penguins walk down the middle of the corridor. The zoo premises are small, so you can finish your visit within 20-30 minutes.
There are two restaurants in this zoo, and the shoyu ramen here is famous. The serving pace in the restaurant is fast.
Coby Khor — Google review
I liked that the zoo had those special tube's where you can observe the animals better, but I don't think the cage are appropriate for the animals. They were really small and empty. There were 5 lions who had not much in their cage and only about 100 square meter.
Many animals also were alone, at least outside, but during opening hours there also only is outside, because the animals have no shelter.
I understand that this helps visitors to see all animals, but it's still not good and sad
Sajina — Google review
My favorite zoo in the world! Penguin parade was the highlight. Standing in the freezing weather for 40 minutes was worth the effort.
Seal gliding on the tube was a close and cute encounter. However, Polar bear was not in a good mood, annoyingly walking back and forth.

The Blue Pond is a beautiful man-made pond located in the scenic province of Biei. The pond is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful blue color and peaceful atmosphere. After being chosen as the wallpaper for Apple Inc., the Blue Pond has become one of the top sights in Japan.
Rental car driving and the roads are twisty but enjoyable to drive.
Google maps helped. 👍
If you're on a tour bus or in a tour group, you'll have no problem.
Very beautiful thing to see.
It can get busy, but you'll get your opportunity to get some great pictures in.
Fyi if you're driving. You'll have to pay ¥500 (less than $5) for parking, when you're leaving.
Booth is just before you exit the parking to get back to the road.

amazing, it was real in front of my eyes (not just on the Apple wallpaper) !! there were many different angles looking into the blue pond, many different reflections of the sky too. the kind of blue is very special, not the sky blue, not the deep-sea blue, kind of turquoise blue but it glowed a bit. not sure my pictures captured the ambience.
Ernest T — Google review
A lovely place to take a relaxing stroll along the artificially created blue pond and it's tranquil surroundings. The blue water is an effect of the aluminum that has seeped into the water and reflected from the sunlight.
Recommended for a nice quick visit for some photography opportunities. There is also public toilets available a this area.
Ting Ting — Google review
Not a very huge pond but the water in the pond is stunning. I guess depending on the time of the day and whether it is sunny or cloudy, the water will give a slight greenish hue or stunning turquoise colour.
I would recommend going early in the morning to avoid tourists.
The carpark is 500Yen Which you pay when you exist. There is a toilet.
If you have time, you can drive further up the road (about 4mins) to Shirahige Waterfall.

Simply beautiful even though the pond was frozen. It was amazing to catch a glimpse of this lovely blue pond during different season, the beginning of Spring. Worth the effort to pop by.

Nice experience. When you first enter, you will not feel that the water is blue. Move more and you'll start to see more blue water.
Taxis cost 4900¥ to reach there. You can take a rental bicycle from the Biei station. If I remember correctly, the distance b/w station and blue pond is more than 21 kms and it will take more than 1 hour to reach there.

Although the area is small, it is worth the stop. The pond is beautiful to look at with a scenic view of the dams waterfall. Parking is 500¥ per vehicle though there are a few areas prior you can pull to the side and walk to the parks many walking paths. There's a small shop that is a bit pricey but holds some cute trinkets and yummy snacks.

Pretty and very blue lake but a very long drive to get there. I don't think it was worth renting a car and driving 3 hours each way from Sapporo just to see this pond. Definitely drop by if you're in the area but don't make this your destination.
They have a cafe and toilets on site. The parking is paid and they charged 500 yen per car. Just prior to the drive up to the pond there's a great rest stop with vending machines, toilets, a phone and some maps.
Also note in the afternoon at 4pm, there were many insects that would sting. Use insect repellent.

Super crowded and with just a narrow muddy path that goes both ways, one has to walk with caution despite being mesmerised by the view. And that view makes all that worthwhile.
Would highly recommend to come at least once, preferably not on a rainy day, which I guess would be rewarded with clear waters and photos with nice reflection.
Blue ice cream was surprisingly refreshing and tasty. Didn't taste weird at all!

Went on 17 April in the morning. Part of the pond has melted while path to take photo was semi-muddy and the number of visitors was reasonable. The view of the blue pond was beautiful with the surrounding ice melting

Very pretty blue pond in Biei, Hokkaido. Parking is 500 yen, but otherwise there's no charge. It can get pretty crowded as the day goes on, so I'd recommend going in the morning if possible. Absolutely recommended if you're in the area, but unless you're looking to take lots of photos it's probably not worth coming out of your way.
If you just want to stroll around and enjoy the sights, 15 minutes is probably plenty. I spent an hour here comfortably taking lots of photos from different angles and with different camera lenses. The weather was beautiful and the pond looked lovely in front of the turning colors (early October). Shop nearby has some cute, if a little pricey, themed goods.
Rachel Boatwright — Google review
I found this place 'magical' , as the colour of the pond changed from greyish to stunning blue. The presence of the withered Japanese larch trees in the waters added to its mystical surroundings. Looking great for photography! As I read, the colour of the pond looks different at different times of the day. [ Wheelchair accessible ]

Quick pond to visit. Not much to see here, other than a quick walk along the pond, finding a hole to take a photo in between all the other visitors. I think the exit queue from the parking lot took longer than our walk along the pond.

There's a public restroom and big parking lot in the vicinity.

Thought we couldn’t see much of the blueness because it was cloudy with heavy rain (We thought the blue was actually reflection from the sky).
Hence we were pleasantly surprised to see the pond pretty blue! Very nice view. Wonder if tourists can swim inside JKJK

The pond is very pretty but really off from everything. I wish there was more to do and more regular busses. I recommend going by car unless you are also fine with walking for about 45 minutes, then you can also reach the waterfall and Onsen

There are two different view and atmosphere when you visit in the daytime and at night. I prefer night time as the view on blue pond was so spectacular. It was a cool pond to see, and the color of the water (brightness of the blue) is dependent on the weather more then anything. Not much else in the area, and a 500¥ parking cost. Souvenir shop was there with some unique gifts. I would revisit to see it in winter, but nothing more.

A bit frozen over around the middle of April.
Parking is ¥500 in 2024.
Would recommend holding off visiting until it’s a bit warmer.

Very picturesque pond. The blue colour is the result of minerals present in the water interacting with sunlight.
The pond is surprisingly close to the parking lot. Go up to the left (past the ice cream stand) to reach the best photo spot immediately. Going up the walkway to the right is not worth the effort as the path is narrow and muddy and the view isn't very nice.

We drive up there to combine it with the Ningle Terra’s ( 48 mins from the pond ) . Worth the 500 yen parking to take some nice, pictures. When i was there it was freezing -12 degrees. I can imagine the pond looks nicer during the spring/summer period.

Beautiful waterfall with the same beautiful blue water as the Blue Pond down the road. You view the waterfall from a very high bridge and while the waterfall itself is lovely, I thought the surrounding view of the mountains and forests was even more beautiful. Worth stopping by for the views if you're in the area! Parking area was a little unclear.

The waterfalls is a nice scenic item to tick off the list. There not much to do there other than walk along the bridge to see the waterfalls really.
You could go to one of the onsens I guess but the main attraction there is the waterfall.
The river running below the bridge shows the cloudy blue water which is iconic to the area.

Good place to stop by if you are here for the blue pond, etc. 30 mins walk from the blue pond - or less than 5 mins drive by car.
The waterfall was lovely - not too big but strong enough and yet delicate. It also offered a nice view with snowy mountain at the back.
You cannot get close to the waterfall - you can see it from the bridge. Pretty empty in end of April, 2021 (though it was weekend). Wish I could see it from different angle too (not only from above but from the riverside, etc.).

This waterfall is a must-visit during the winter season. The frozen ice and snow covering the waterfall, coupled with its stunning never-frozen blue water, is a sight to behold. The clear sky and the beautiful Daisetsuzan mountain range in the backdrop add to the charm of the place. Although the area was initially quite crowded with several tour buses, we were fortunate enough to have the entire place to ourselves once they left.

These waterfalls are rather special as they came out from the cliffs. They made a spectacular sight when you watched them from the iron bridge. Everthough it's already spring, this place was so cold that there were still snow cover found everywhere. Making the place rather picturesque. Furthermore, the setting sun added more colours to the whole place .....it's mesmerising!

I haven't discovered much of Hokkaido yet, so was excited when I found this place. It's beautiful, with convenient parking across the street. Not too crowded on a weekday either. It was also rainy the day we went though. The bridge is sturdy but it is built upwards, so may feel weird to some while walking across it. There is also a 286 step staircase close by but it doesn't lead to a nicer view, just a parking lot. It was a nice exercise though! Overall, worth the quick stop to see a beautiful waterfall and river.

The parking area is foc but it was crowded with other tour buses and tour groups when we visited. There is a short walk after crossing the road down the car/bus park where you will arrive at a metal bridge suspended over the river below. On one side if you look downwards, you will be able to see the majestic waterfall just below with blue water cascading down to join the river as it flows underneath the bridge that you are standing on. Far away in the distance you will be able to see multiple mountains/peaks and even spot one that is smoking continuously! When we visited in 2nd week of oct in mid afternoon, the whole place was teeming with flying lady birds of all colors and sizes. Sadly, due to the sheer number of visitors, many lady birds ended squashed on the bridge. There is a toilet facilities next to the carpark but understandably as this place is heavily visited by tourists, there was a long line of people queueing to use the toilets.

It was definitely a fun experience! Went during near winter season. There are many pretty tunnels in the pavilion, which was broken into different sections for phototaking. I like how they manage to build a small place to let you see diamond dust formation as well. Furthermore, they had actually built a slide for adults & kids to play when you exited the pavilion. Overall, I love it. I would recommend anyone to try. Is a kids friendly place too!

The interior of the facility is constructed to give the impression of being entirely frozen.

We started with activity colouring some pictures before entering the exhibits. The colour vanished under heating and it returned when we got into the ice room. We received a towel which turns hard after some time when we are inside the pavilion. The -40degree room wasn't that appealing probably because we are all geared up as it was winter time when we visit. The rest area which is supposed to allow those who feel cold to get some warm don't seems to be effective. There is a free cup of hot tea for everyone after we finished our tour. Overall, place was quite small for the price but assume the maintenance cost is high. Activities were interesting.

Asahi-dake is a dormant stratovolcano that offers a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can enjoy stunning autumn foliage from the rope way while listening to informative electrical announcements, but it comes with a high cost of 30 dollars for the round trip. The cable car service may be suspended due to strong winds, so visitors should plan their trip accordingly. Accommodations near the mountain offer excellent hot springs, but food options are limited in the area.
Highly recommended Place to visit in Autumn. It's a 1.7KM hike that is supposedly suppose to only take you an hour. But if you love to take photos, give yourself at least 2 hours. If you must take photo of everything, and every angle, then set aside 3 hour to 3.5 hour minimum for the hike. Some terrains are really rocky and it's best to be in hiking attire, and have waterproof covers for your bag if it is predicted to rain. Amazing place! Really breath taking views.

Heads up though, there are a lot of bear sightings in the area recently so please bring a bear bell or bear spray.

Autumn leaves that you can see from the rope way is amazing and you can hear details by electrical announcements; This is why it costs 30bucks for the round trip. Seriously, 30bucks! This rope way stops when it’s too windy, so have some extra days if you wish to get there. Hotels around the mountains have great onsen, but better to prepare lots of foods before coming to this area.
Climbing up to the summit takes 1.5hours but it’s rocky and slippery and EXTREMELY cold. Be prepared. I was hoping to have lunch on the top but it was IMPOSSIBLE for it’s wind and coldness even in September.

this might have been my favorite hike in japan overall, even more than mt fuji, mt yotei, and miyajima. i thought i was missing out by going in september and not getting to see most of the alpine flowers, but the benefit of going in the fall when all the snow has melted (besides the fact that its significantly cheaper) is you can see the rock formations and multi-colored gravel better and it feels like walking on a different planet sometimes. it was incredibly quiet that day too. there were parts that were sheltered enough from the wind where you literally couldnt hear anything, not even an insect or bird call. ive never been anywhere outdoors that was that quiet before.
i did a day trip from sapporo and finished way early with hours of extra time before the last bus. did the nakadake/susoaidaira loop which had some stunning scenery in the first half, but i found the lower-elevation/valley portion on the way back to be the least interesting part of the hike, although its probably a lot better if the flowers are in full bloom. if i were to do it over, i would have done the same loop up to the nakadake springs (which isnt too far past the previous trail junction) and then backtracked and continued on to the kurodake side, taking the train back from there since i had a JR pass.
if you come here, you should definitely at least do the full susoaidaira loop. its well worth continuing on past asahidake as thats where a lot of the best scenery was

Well this is absolutely a must-do in the area!
After the ropeway station, you have the option of looping around the pond (takes about 40min?) or hiking up to the peak of Mt. Asahi.
There was still some snow in the first 500m but after you start ascending, it just lots of rocks (some are loose). I recommend wearing hiking shoes or rain boots since you will have a lot more grip when coming down. I didn’t have hiking poles..wish I did, would’ve made descending a lot easier.
Best part about this hike is the vastness you see....but the fog made it difficult to see. I wish I went on a clearer day.
This hike was not too difficult if you are well prepared with your gear. Be sure to check out the weather before you go.
There were quite a few older Japanese hiking by themselves...all were super prepared with hiking poles, hiking backpacks, and bear bells! yes..there are bears.

Must-visit spot in Hokkaido!
Asahidake is the highest mountain in this beautiful northern land. With the nice gondola, you can easily arrive at somewhere closed to the peak, where many splendid views could be taken by the camera. If you happen to bring some equipment for skiing or snowboarding, then just follow the trails and enjoy your snow adventure!

Asahidake is the first place in Japan to witness autumn colors and snow each year. The autumn color season attracts many visitors in mid-September. I took a cable car to a part of the pond in Asahidake and then hiked to the top of the mountain in 4 hours. Fortunately, at the summit, I had a chance to see a little fox.

Took a ropeway up to this beautiful mountain top, highest peak in Hokkaido. Several hiking routes. Due to heavy rain and strong wind in October, we manage to complete the 30mins route.
Definitely be back again to track the 1 hour route.

Came in the end of June and didn't make the top. The fog, rain and then heavy sleet made conditions unsafe. We did enjoy seeing snow for the first time in years! It was crazy to see the bottom at a sunny 70 and the top in such unclear sleet maybe snow conditions. Then back to sunny all in 1 day.
Recommend going when the snow is actually all melted.

Super lucky to still see some snow melting off Mount Asahi in June. It was a pretty easy hike, but recommended to wear proper gears especially when there’s snow. Very very beautiful and amazing landscapes.
Jamie Chua — Google review
I hiked all the way to the peak. Took me like 4 hours round trip, though I took a ton of breaks in between. It's kinda a rough hike back down, the rocks are very very slippery and I fell like 4 times. The path gets sketchy sometimes but it's manageable. The view from below was very very nice. Went in early June and there was still snow and ice. You'll need hiking boots for sure.

Absolutely stunning hike around the frozen lakes - and we went in October! Bring your sunglasses, as the glare from the snow is rather blinding. Wear water-proof shoes if you have them.

I'll never travel to Abashiri without this trip planner again
The Daisetsuzan Sōunkyō Kurodake Ropeway is a cable lift that spans a mile, providing breathtaking scenic views of Mount Kurodake. It also grants access to trails and ski slopes. Visitors should note that the only restroom available is located at the 5th station where the cable car ends. The garden connecting the cable car and chair lift stations offers an opportunity to take a leisurely stroll.
I stayed in Sounkyo for 2 days at the beginning of March 2024. I took the Mt. Kurodake cable-car around 10am - there were only 3 other people in the gondola! I was lucky that the weather was fantastic - clear, blue sky and little wind. The view from the observation platform on top of the cable-car station was amazing - 360 degree mountains as far as you could see. I was the only one on the observation deck when I arrived!
Skiers and snowboarders can take a chairlift which you can walk to from the top cable-car station - only skiers and snowboarders were allowed to take the chairlift. I saw some skiers that climbed further up Mt. Kurodake from the top of the chairlift.
I saw them coming down from the summit - you would have to hike to get that high! I also saw ski tracks off-piste. You can buy an all-day lift ticket for the cable-car and chairlift if you are a keen skier / snowboarder. There is only one on-piste run down the mountain, so I think the people that are skiing all day are advanced and are going off-piste.
If the weather is good, even if you're not a skier the view from the cable-car and observation deck is breathtaking!
Neil “CMNeil” — Google review
Nice views but if you don't ski or snowboard the price to go up and down is high. Maybe around 2500 yen return.
Alexander Moore — Google review
This is an epic little spot, there is a small 150m vertical lift at the top of the ropeway with some very epic powder stashes at the top.
But if it's untracked powder you are looking for make sure you have packed your skins and if you can, book a guide as the backcountry skiing above Kurodake is insanely epic!
Ben Wiggins — Google review
Nothing much to see in summer. The only view is at the roof top of the cable car station. The chairlift is interesting to experience but that’s about it.
M Chow — Google review
Pleasantly surprised by how long the ride was! The staff was so kind. It was raining when we went and they wiped the seats and put on covers.

The gondola can take up to 101 people , thus the wait to board doesn’t take too long .it takes about 10 min ride on the gondola.
Make sure you buy tickets before you queue .
There are 2 types of tickets ;one without the chair lift , and the other includes chair lift that brings you to 7th station .it takes about 10 min ride on chair lift .
You can then take a hike to the summit of Mt Kurodake 1984m. The climb is about 75 min for us . The trail head starts at 7th station.
View is spectacular on clear day .
Recommended if weather is good .
Spyder — Google review
Take the cable car and chair lift! the view is amazing. Take note that the only toilet available is at the 5th station (where the cable car ends). You can walk around the garden that connects the cable car station and chair lift station. At the end of the chair lift station (7th station) you can hike a little to a nearby observatory deck (easy path) or to the peak (need the correct hiking equipment). Check the weather before going because fog is common.

There are only 2 cars going up and down. Entry about JPY 2000 per person. It’s slowly going up (and down) the hill. The view is breathtaking. And the staff will play some recording that explains the surrounding area. Car is quite spacious and the ride is very enjoyable.

Very steep and long ungroomed slope.

Quick 7 min ride up from the base up to the 5th station. Cost to value ratio was poor at ¥2,400 pp return. Ride was enjoyable enough although we had missed the autumn leaves by a few weeks so most of the mountain was 80% brown so was disappointing compared to my expectations. Not much to see at the 5th station (the view down the valley wasn’t that spectacular and not many viewpoints to see out either) and the chairlift to 7th station was closed for maintenance (tried the walking trail from 5th to 7th station but was hardly a trail as it was very rocky and very muddy).

Sounkyo Gorge, situated in Eastern Hokkaido, is a breathtaking natural attraction nestled within Daisetsuzan National Park. The gorge was formed by the Ishikari River carving through the lava plateau of Mt. Daisetsu, resulting in a stunning landscape adorned with hexagonal columnar joints. The name "Sounkyo" originates from the Ainu language, signifying a river abundant with waterfalls.

The Taushubetsu River Bridge is an old rail bridge that lies submerged in the lake for most of the year due to the construction of the Nukabira Dam. However, during winters, when the lake's water level drops, it reappears and presents a mysterious object on the lake. The bridge has a rich history and offers beautiful scenery around its disused concrete structure. Sadly, it is falling apart now, and part of it may collapse in a few years.

at all, very lucky day I guess. All the lake's serface was iced so I could walk on it. 30-40min to Taushubetsu bridge by walk, which is a mysterious object on the lake. In the winter, because of lake's short water, the bridge seams to be emarged on the lake only in the winter.

Concrete arch bridge on the former National Railways Shihoro Line
1st Hokkaido Heritage, Quasi-Railway Monument
When the bridge is reflected in Lake Nukabira on a clear, windless day, it looks like a pair of glasses.
Also, because it is an arch bridge, it has another name, ``Glasses Bridge,'' and its appearance, reminiscent of the ruins of an ancient Roman aqueduct, is said to harmonize with the surrounding scenery.
It was originally a bridge built over the Taushubetsu River, a tributary of the Otofuke River, when the Japanese National Railway Shihoro Line (discontinued in 1987) opened to Tokachi-Mimata Station in 1939.
In 1955, the Nukabira Dam, an artificial dam lake for hydroelectric power generation, was built, and the area around the bridge sank into the lake, so the Shihoro Line was replaced with a new line built to avoid the lake.
Although the railroad tracks on the bridge were removed at that time, the bridge itself was left in the lake, where it remains to this day.
Lake Nukabira is an artificial lake, and the water level changes dramatically depending on the season and power generation, so there are times when the entire bridge is submerged, and other times when the water level is so low that you can see the entire bridge.
Because of its appearance, it is also called the ``phantom bridge.''
Since being submerged in the dam, it has been left to its own devices and could collapse at any time.
It looks beautiful no matter what season you visit, so if you have the chance, you should definitely go.

To be fair we only went there on the last day of the season 2nd June 2019 (its open for 3 or 4 weeks only each year), so as you can see in the photographs there are not many flowers left. So the entrance that day was free. The views of the valley are amazing and Im sure when the hill is covered in pink amd white flowers the place will make a good memory. But be prepared to deal with big crowds during the short time it lasts

Most of the other foxes were just minding their own business. Its quite interesting to note that they are quite active during winter. Keep a lookout and you will find foxes up on the trees too.

The fox is quite cute. Be aware of your luggage since they can bite quickly if it’s near them.

Stopped by as we had a long drive and wanted to stop and stretch our legs. Ticket prices are 500 yen for 1 adult. Very small area . But i like that guests are not allowed to interact with the foxes and racoon dogs.

Nice place to stop by, take a close look to lovely fox:)
Josephine Huang — Google review
Really enjoyed our time! The place has a nice open space for the fox to run around. Visitors must stay on the paths but that's ok because the fox have free range. Can't wait to visit during the spring or summer to see them run around more! It was cold today and they were resting mainly but their coats were gorgeous!!

Good place for close up encounter with the red foxes and raccoons.
The farm is not big about 300m x 100m. We seen about 20-25 foxes and 2-3 raccoons.
Manage to take some good pics and enjoy the relatively peaceful stroll among the foxes.
Do drop by if you have 30mins to spare
Chee Wan Lim — Google review
Foxes are cute but the farm itself is a bit old. Ticket is 500JPY per adult in 2023.

The place look run down from the outside, but don't be fooled. You can get up close with the fox! 2 of them were very friendly and come to the gate to greet me. Not too many people. You can take your time to take picture of and with the fox. No feeding or touching with the fox.
Albert Wong — Google review
Good experience if you are there for the first time. It was my 2nd time there, this time was the free and easy trip and didn't find it as interesting as the first time. There is no more feeding of foxes and they are more shy. However, beware if you have really little child, the fox came really close an stared at my 1 year old child and walk around her. It only go away after I carry my child in my arms. It's ok for my other child which is 6year old.

The Northern Daichi Aquarium is a small yet high-quality freshwater fish exhibit situated in the Onneyu Onsen area. Featuring simulated habitats, including a waterfall and frozen river, this aquarium offers an immersive experience for visitors. The tanks are well-maintained with flowing water to simulate the natural habitat of various fish species. Additionally, there is a small touching zone where visitors can feel some fish up close.
Love this wonderful aquarium! It's small, but the creatures and tanks are very well taken care of. I love it that many descriptions of the fish are handwritten in a cute and fun manner and that the staff are so involved with the whole aquarium! 😄 it's one of the most enjoyable aquariums I've visited and will definitely go again if I'm in Kitami.

a place with a large garden, there is a unique building in front that attracts attention but at first I thought it was the main building. but the main building is on the side with a small bridge made of wood. tickets cost 760¥ for one adult. There isn't a very large aquarium inside, but the collection of fish is arranged in a charming, clean, orderly aquarium with lighting that creates a relaxed atmosphere. What was surprising was that the exit was directly connected to the souvenir shop. many types of wooden crafts, herbal things and snacks. more things can be seen in this shop actually hahaha which I think is really funny. but don't regret going here.

A nice roadside surprise with quite a few native trout and some South American fish, too. Small tanks and a bit overpriced, but worth a 20-minute stop, more if you browse the souvenir shops and have a soft cream.

Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park is a scenic destination featuring vast fields filled with an array of vibrant seasonal flowers, including tulips of various hues. The park boasts windmills and hosts an annual Tulip Fair, making it a delightful spot to visit in the springtime. Picturesque and charming, it is recommended to plan your visit during May and arrive early in the morning for optimal views.
This was very pretty, considering we were a bit late in the season. But it’s beautiful- plan your timing of visit right in May and in the earlier morning.
The pictures speak for themselves.
Jeremy Chan — Google review
Visited in Mid-May and the tulip fields were almost fully filled out. The park is beautiful and has a large variety of tulips along with a few other flowers. They have a huge free parking lot with bathrooms and admission is ~600 yen per person. We arrived ~4pm, an hour before close, so we didn’t have enough time to check out the little store. There were several other booths that are probably open during peak season. Also the pamphlet stated there’s a section to dig up your own tulip for 100 yen, as well as costume rentals for 500 yen, but we arrived too late to enjoy all the festivities. Definitely worth stopping by!

札幌からのH.I.S.

I went on the H.I.S. bus tour from Sapporo. It was a long journey anyway. If you go from Sapporo, you can see the peak of Daisetsuzan on your right behind the greenery. Various types of tulips are planted in the spacious tulip field on the flat land. There were many different colors of tulips, but there were also flowers with petals that I had never seen before, so I not only enjoyed the many tulips, but also learned a lot. Once the flowers have finished blooming, the flowers are picked, and then the bulbs are taken out of the soil, dried, and replanted. I thought it was just planting, but it seems like it took a lot of effort. Some of the flowers have already been picked, some are about to finish blooming, and some are about to bloom, so I guess we can enjoy blooming for a long time. There were other flowers besides tulips. There was an explanation in the building opposite the entrance, and bulbs were also sold there. It seems that the bulbs are shipped in autumn.
There was a performance under the windmill, and everyone was relaxing there.

Lake Akan is a freshwater body located within the confines of an active volcano, showcasing dense forests and hot springs. The crater lake offers picturesque views, with opportunities to walk along the hot spring street and indulge in activities such as fishing and ice sports during winter. The area around Mount Io boasts stunning scenery but has a distinct smell of sulfur similar to Rotarua in New Zealand. One can also explore the Bokke mud pools by taking the walking trails through the forest.
A pretty lake where you can enjoy the lake view and walking along the hot spring street. Of course, the hot spring is totally worth it! In summer time, the sightseeing boat is available, and in winter time you may want to do fishing and ice activities.

A short trail near the lakeshore took you into the woods and a number of geothermal spots. Relax and enjoyable.

Lake Akan was a really buzzing place with a lot of snowmobiles circling around (looked like locals were competing in some sort of race). It’s pretty interesting place but you’ll have to walk around 5min to get to this sign, worth! Can’t wait to be back in summer where the sign is probably in the middle of the melted lake?

Bihoro Pass is a winding mountain pass in East Hokkaido, offering breathtaking views of Lake Kussharo. Visitors can reach the pass by car via National Highway 391 or Route 53, and enjoy free entrance and parking at the road station. The observation deck provides a picturesque spot to take in the stunning scenery, with the option to stay overnight in a car park for sunrise views.
Great spot for amazing views. There is a food court and small shop. A must place to visit. One day hope to be able to catch the sea of clouds moment.

The huge lake situated in the caldera of a stratovolcano in Japan is completely frozen over every winter. It is considered as Japan's largest caldera lake, with a small volcano visible from its center which creates the island Naka-jima best viewed from Bihoro Pass. The park can be accessed through route 102 that offers breathtaking views of Lake Kussharo, especially during sunset.
Taken during winter in feb.
Beautiful lake to visit anytime of the year. There are quite a few different wildlife here that are good to spot during dawn and evenings.
This area is very peaceful and the road that runs along the lake offers lots of scenic spots for photos.
There are many onsens in this area and some are just by the lake. Offering a super peaceful experience while you relax in the ryokan.

The Abashiri Prison Museum, a former penal institution, showcases life-size dioramas depicting prison life from the Meiji era. The museum is an impressive and solemn reminder of Hokkaido's history, providing insight into the gravity of what occurred there. However, it lacks adequate English translations. Despite this drawback, it remains a popular destination for families on rainy days as narrations are available in English and Japanese.
If you are a fan of GOLDEN KAMUY! This is place is the best! Abashiri, looks just like the anime.

It closes at 5PM but the last entry is 4PM, so I was not able to enter. I really wanted to pay to go into prison but they wouldn’t let me in unfortunately. I stood outside the prison looking in wishing I was inside. The prison souvenir shop closes at 4PM too.

The Abashiri Prison Museum is truly a rare gem in the world of museums. Before my visit, I hesitated, questioning whether I should explore a place with a history tied to human rights concerns. However, upon stepping inside, my perspective underwent a profound transformation. The museum provided a profound education on the history of Hokkaido's development and the darker aspects of its past, where prisoners were inhumanely exploited for progress.
As I delved deeper into the museum's exhibits, I was confronted with the harsh realities of prison life and the toll it took on those incarcerated within its walls. Through artifacts, photographs, and poignant displays, I gained insight into the struggles faced by prisoners and the role they unwittingly played in shaping Hokkaido's landscape.
One of the museum's most compelling features was its ability to provoke introspection and foster dialogue about issues of justice and human dignity. By confronting the uncomfortable truths of the past, the museum challenges visitors to reflect on the ethical implications of progress at any cost.
Despite my initial reservations, I left the Abashiri Prison Museum with a newfound appreciation for its educational value and the importance of confronting difficult histories. It is a place where visitors can bear witness to the injustices of the past and pledge to create a more equitable future.
If you're intrigued by the complexities of Hokkaido's history and the resilience of the human spirit, I urge you to set aside any hesitations and experience the Abashiri Prison Museum for yourself. It's a journey that promises to challenge your preconceptions and inspire meaningful reflection.

Must visit, must see. The main purpose of coming to Abashiri. Please read the history below.
History:
In April 1890, the Meiji government sent over a thousand political prisoners to the isolated Abashiri village and forced them to build roads linking it to the more populous south. Initial conditions were extremely harsh, with insufficient food and rest, and over 200 prisoners died of malnutrition, accidents and as punishment for attempting to escape. Abashiri Prison later became known for being a self-sufficient farming prison, and was cited as a model for others throughout Japan.
Most of the prison burned down in a 1909 fire, but it was reconstructed in 1912. Previously known as Abashiri Kangoku (網走監獄), it took on its current name in 1922. In 1984, the prison moved to a modern reinforced concrete complex.
In 1983, older parts of the prison were relocated to the base of Mount Tento and operate as a museum called the Abashiri Prison Museum (博物館網走監獄). It is the only prison museum in the country. As of 2016, eight of the buildings preserved at the museum are designated Important Cultural Property by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, while three are registered Tangible Cultural Property.

Haha honestly to say, in fact this museum looks huge but it's only basement has 3 things to explore, the movie that shows the drift ice for 8 mins, then some explanation for sea creatures plus self experience touching the drift ice and towel spinning at -15 degrees, since the entrance fee is not expensive, Why not stop by for little fun experience, I recommend you to take a 10% discount coupon at hotel or tourist center.

A great museum to learn about the wildlife and drift ice of the area. Many displays have English, including the professionally-produced video. There is a drift ice experience room, where they keep the temperature well below freezing and give you a damp towel which you can swing around and see what funny shape it freezes in. The small aquarium also functions as a 3D video screen that the staff can operate (you can ask them to show you if it's not busy); you can see a diver's science excursion in the sea. The free observation deck upstairs has a nice view, and the ice cream from the cafe is a light salt-caramel flavor.

For those interested in the sea angel (clione) and learning about drift ice, this museum is worth a visit. Although it's not a large museum, the exhibits are informative and engaging.
The museum offers a theatre that shows a documentary about drift ice with subtitles in different languages, including English. You can also explore several small aquariums featuring sea creatures from the Okhotsk Sea and visit an ice room where you can swing a towel and witness it freeze, which is a unique and enjoyable experience.
The observatory deck can be accessed without purchasing a ticket and you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the Okhotsk Sea, with drift ice stretching out for several kilometers. The majestic Shiretoko mountain range serves as a dramatic backdrop, completing the breathtaking scenery.
If you're a fan of salted caramel flavor, you'll love the ice cream sold on the first floor - it's absolutely delicious!
Overall, I recommend this museum to anyone who wants to learn more about drift ice and see some incredible sea creatures, particularly the cute and charming sea angel.

Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park is a stunning destination in Hokkaido during the spring and summer seasons. The park boasts blooming pink moss phlox slopes, go-kart paths, a fishing pond, bungalows and many photo spots. Admission fee of 500 yen includes free parking while there is also a bus tour available at an extra cost. Walking is recommended to explore the park's beautiful scenery including stairs and mulch trails.
Went here during May23, peak blossom. It does look like moss from far and like a carpet too. There are plenty of photo spots and some eateries selling ice creams and fast foods.
If you have problems walking, there is a mini bus service going around the park. The driver will drive very slowly so you can take pictures with ease and enjoy the view.
We didn't have enough time to explore every inch of the park because of tight schedule. Maybe next time.
Highly recommend if northern Hokkaido is part of your plan. From Sapporo will take about 4-6h. So it won't be a day trip.

If you are here in Hokkaido during mid-May, you must visit this Park as a bucket list to do. At this time the pink moss flowers are in full bloom like heavenly flowers on earth. The park also have food stores that sell convenient food and snacks only. Only wish they have a gourmet restaurant to complete a wonderful day. The rainy season at this time of the year is also problematic.
The 6-hour drive along the freeway from Sapporo does not provide opportunity for restaurant breaks.

Shibazakura, also known as moss phlox, is the representative flower of Spring in Hokkaido. Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park is one of the most well-known places for shibazakura in the whole prefecture! The ten-hectare park is painted with the most glorious pink and white colors from early May to early June. At the top of the hill is an observatory from which to take stunning photographs of the picturesque landscape. The photogenic pink torii shrine gate is also a popular spot to take pictures. Great place to visit. The Shibazakura were just started to come into full bloom. What a beautiful way to spend a couple of hours. Admission is 500 yen and parking is plentiful and free. There is a bus tour for a fee but I think walking is the best way to see it if you don't mind stairs and mulch trails. There are also go-karts which looked fun. There are many photo spots and lots of helpful staff. There isn't a lot of variety in terms of food stalls but enough to keep you satisfied if you need a snack!

Abashiri is located at 44 degrees north latitude, and the Okhotsk coast is the southernmost point where the sea freezes.
The situation is such that you can enjoy the shocking dazzle of drift ice that appears on the frigid Amur River and then turns into white land and heads south from the drift ice sightseeing icebreaker ship "Aurora", but unfortunately, the drift ice itself is almost far off the coast. It seemed like it had just flowed away.
Freshwater flowing into the Sea of Okhotsk from the Amur River, the largest river in the Far East that flows along the border between China and Russia, freezes and grows larger as it moves south.
It appears that a mysterious white figure can be seen along the coast of Okhotsk around late January.
It operates from late January to late March every year.
A variety of wild animals also appear depending on the time of year when the drift ice arrives.
You can also see the clione, the angel of the ice, as well as seals, other marine mammals, and birds standing on the ice.
